guess what's been keeping me company the last couple weeks!! listen i went into neverafter for the body horror but mister lee mulligan really is just giving gift after gift to the wlw out there huh. hello ma'am i just want you to know i would kill & die for you but am also genuinely hoping you work things out with your frog husband, the guy has really grown on me and he's taken some big leaps forward lately yknow

apologies to anybody who knows things about armor! i have done some research largely by use of the Met's online collection and have generally tried to make it look like something that actually exists, but some choices are for stylin and some are basically entirely dictated by composition & constraints of the printing process. i did also have a sketch version including pauldrons etc., but i wasn't going to ditch the helmet and without most of her hair or the sleeves or the green of her nails there would be very little else of her current portrait design to cling to anymore.

i'll admit also there is 0% temporal consistency with the style of lineart, the type face, and the little frog guy but. the frog guy. he's so funny and he's the only frog i've got. i love him. gerard im rooting for you, do not fuck this up!!

Process: letterpress

Here are two examples of chases. That is what I use in order to print the text for my poetry book. First I write the words, starting from the last line and building my way up. I write from right to left with the letters appearing in reverse, but spelling in the normal order. Once the sentence is written, I might tweak the spaces a bit to create rhythm within the poem. Once everything is ready, I place the textblock in the chase and lock it in place. I make sure no letter is trying to escape, and I do my registration sheet so I can print. At first, I do a blind embossing on newsprint, to check spelling and if the shape of the poem looks ok. When everything is ready to print, I ink the chase and I can print my folios.

I was SO happy to get this project inquiry in my inbox a couple weeks ago :D Atomic Frontier is making short science documentaries on YouTube and asked if I could put together a small printing project that put the channel name in handset type, with every letter a different face—I said yes of COURSE this a typography crime I will aid & abet, thank you. I do not know when the final video concerning typography will be finished but my personal favorite currently available is Why typing sucks now for perhaps obvious reasons and you should check it out to scratch that language & science itch In order: Caslon swash; Trafton; Gravure; Garamond small caps; Nubian; Bernhard Fashion; Tudor Black; Melior; Reporter; Bodoni book italic; News Gothic condensed; Albertus; Della Robbia (original); Bernhard Tango. (I tried but could not find a place in the visual rhythm for the coolest raddest Wilhelm Klingspor Schrift :( but I believe it will make an appearance in the final video)

learn about our wonderful type studio with Oscar!

collectively we chose a song (No Wind Resistance! by Kinneret). each student got a lyric starting from the beginning. we got to explore a whole range of fonts and sizes (36-96 size) of lead letters, some chose wood which was pretty neat.

the biggest struggle was making sure you use the same font, otherwise you’ll need to work around the spacers or, like Mike and I, have start all over again (totally my fault). once we got it all on the press, with this beautiful range of purple, we were good to go. sike, we were not. how we had our letters face the wrong way so much i dont even know, but with patience we got some cool prints.

some students took it upon themselves to make other type prints. it was just a lovely collaborative time and id like to say we learned a lot.
