Blog Post 8 week 11
How has social media changed how information on protests is spread throughout the world?
With technology becoming more advanced and many countries having access to social media, it has become one of many platforms that help spread the word regarding movements and protests that are being ignored. For example, as mentioned in Fuchs' reading, they talk about how the Occupy Movement and the Arab Spring have changed how social change and political activism can be easier and more accessible. (Fuchs) Both of these movements helped show how citizens used different social media platforms, such as Facebook, to organize their protests and use the platform to spread awareness of what they are protesting against. This brings out citizen journalists, nonprofessional journalists, or bloggers who spread the word of protest through websites, blogs, or social media. These journalists don't hold back with information; they post about what is happening, not just how big the crowds are.
How is hacktivism related to cyberwar?
Hacktivism is defined as politically influenced actions presented by people who want to express their disapproval or advocate for a cause. In some cases, hacktivism can be taken too far. Cyberwar is a sustained engagement that can be an example of espionage or sabotage.(Vegh 67-92) When hacktivism escalates to a state-level engagement and is part of a sustained conflict, it can fall under the category of cyber war. Basically when hacktivism goes way to far it can lead it to being deemed s cyberwar.
How is social media important when it comes to testimonies?
The using of social media has made a great impact when it comes to speaking about personal experiences. In Lee’s reading she talks about how people would use platforms such as Twitter to talk about their personal experience when it comes to movements such as hashtags like #HandsUpDontShoot. (Lee) This hashtag was used to challenge narratives of police violence bringing to the attention of others experience when it came to how people felt racially profieled by police. In a way they broke the barrier since many voices go unheard when it comes to these situations there experiences are ignored but with the use of social media they are able to spread their voices and bring together others who have gone through the same thing.
How did the #NoDAPL movement change from the help of social media?
During the year 2016 the #NoDAPL movement gained a lot of visibility from the help of the Water Protectors who camped outside Cannonball, North Dakota in protest of the pipelines that would cross from North Dakota to Illinois passing through lands of two different native tribes and damage their water supply. With the creation of the hashtag it helped spread out word and information about what was going on with the movement. It had a live stream going on to show others who could not be there see what was going on in person as mentioned in Deschine Parkhurst’s article (Deschine Parkhurst) It helped with showing what they were doing and showed everything while news outlets would put out what they wanted to show like how big the crowds were and not asking why they were protesting against the DAPL.

#Ferguson
"The increased use and availability of these technologies has provided marginalized and racialized populations with new tools for documenting incidents of state-sanctioned violence and contesting media representations of racialized bodies and marginalized communities."
"It is surely not coincidental that the groups most likely to experience police brutality, to have their protests disparaged as acts of “rioting” or “looting,” and to be misrepresented in the media are precisely those turning to digital activism at the highest rates."
"The use of hashtags such as #HandsUpDontShoot, #IfTheyGunnedMeDown, and #NoAngel speak to the long history of inaccurate and unfair portrayal of African Americans within mainstream media and to the systematic profiling and victim blaming suffered by racializied bodies."
Bonilla, Yarimar, and Jonathan Rosa. 2015. “#Ferguson: Digital Protest, Hashtag Ethnography, and the Racial Politics of Social Media in the United States.” American Ethnologist 42 (1): 4–17. https://doi.org/10.1111/amet.12112.

BLACK LIVES MATTER Hello everyone. I’ve been processing my thoughts for the pat few days. afraid to create my own post on the topic because, it could make people upset. But I shouldn’t be afraid to speak up about something that matters! It’s insane how our country has turned and shown its true colors. My prayers go to the protesters who are standing up for the voiceless. May they stay safe. Everytime I see a new tweet about them getting gassed or shot my stomach churns. They’re just innocent people trying to protest. It’s not fair. Racism has never left thus country. I’ve grown up in a semi racist house and around many racist friends. I’ve let crude remarks slide too many times when I was younger because, I was afraid to speak up for myself and others. I don’t want to do that anymore. younger me didn’t understand until I was a little older and started learning more about the US history, wrote my final English paper on Racism in America. It sickened me all the years of high school learning about oppression and racism and how not much has changed since. At this moment I really want to block all of my friends on instagram who haven’t said a word because, I know a lot of my friend’s views and I disagree with them. But I haven’t blocked or unfollowed any of them in hopes they see what me and others post so they can educate themselves and help the movement. This movement isn’t new. It’s growing across our nation… I wasn’t sure about posting at all then I remembered that I have nearly 3,000 followers on this blog and maybe someone will read this. Maybe it will move people to help because, we cannot continue to sit in silence while black people continue to be oppressed.. (if no one reads this it’s okay… I really just needed to rant..) I, myself have been finding ways to help & educate myself and I hope you all will too. If i can I’ll post a link that has links to ways to help and more information. Please sign the petitions if you can.. Dear black brothers and sisters, I hear you. I want to fight with you. This is not a time to be silent. No matter what race you are you are welcome to this blog. no matter your gender, sexuality, religion, and preference. You are welcome. Rest in power George Floyd.

Are your protest rides leading to the changes you want to see? Are they leading to dialogues to educate? Are they leading to policy changes? Are they expanding mobility justice movements? Are they making “taking space” more safe for Black folks? Are there resources needed? Are they centering Black leadership? . We’d like to hear some feedback from folks on what they are seeing or tips to help others in the community. Leave your questions and comments below. We’d like to center BIPOC voices here so y’all with light skin privilege can learn how to be accomplices during these events. Thanks for respecting this space. . 📸@jakedietrich . #blacklivesmatter #nojusticenopeace #liberation #nomorecopskilling #handsupdontshoot #nycprotests #bluelivesmurder #freedomisnow #unitedwestand #stopracism #racistpolice #bicyclists #protest #evenslamourphotography #marching4justice #blacklivesmatter #sayhername #breonnataylor #streetridersnyc #thisiswhatcommunitylookslike #ourstreets #whostreetsourstreets https://www.instagram.com/p/CDSHc4FlIiO/?utm_medium=tumblr

IMPORTANT UPDATE
THE POLICE ISOLATED A COORGANIZER AND FORCED US TO CHANGE OUR ROUTE AT THE VERY LAST MINUTE *THE DAY BEFORE OUR PROTEST*
THIS IS AN ACT TO SILENCE OUR VOICES AND MAKE OUR DEMONSTRATION CONSIDERABLY LESS NOTICABLE, VOCABLE, AND ORGANIZED
PLEASE HELP ME PROVE THEM WRONG AND SHARE THE UPDATED ROUTE
EVEN IF YOU DO NOT LIVE IN ILLINOIS OR THE US, PLEASE SIGNAL BOOST THIS

Last night I was a part of a historical event in my city. We made our voices heard in opposition of police brutality, justice for George Floyd, and justice for all black lives.
We walked for hours, roughly 15 miles. All over the city. We shut down streets and made the police literally back down.
The group forced them to drive backwards from 23rd and Penn. Drove backwards all the way down Penn to get out of our way.
We walked and made our voices heard, all the way to the downtown police station. This. This is where it gets insane. Immediately, a handful of people begin destroying police cars...as they stand in a line..in full tactical gear, and watched. They made announcements that they would not hurt anyone unless you touched an officer. Which was a lie, because they unleashed teargas and rubber bullets last night.
I was in the first round of teargas; It was hell. 10/10 do not recommend.
Preferred over the rubber bullets 100%, no question. We made it away from that area before it escalated to that.
We left and walked towards our car and saw the frustration in everyone's red, blotchy faces. Everyone was recovering from being hit with teargas. Your skin is on fire, you can't see, it hurts to breathe and every open hole on your face is leaking snot or tears. It's an awful experience. It's surreal, and anger inducing to hear the cries of hundreds, being affected by it. Even reporters were hit with it.
Yes. People were angry and could not hold it in anymore. Vandalism occurred. Looting happened. We did not take part. Spectator's in such a thing I have never seen before. Such passion and anger to be heard, and for a change.
I inadvertently was taking a Snapchat when we caught the first store looting on film. It was a Family Dollar on Park Place and Classen in OKC. We then watched a Walgreens get broken into, looted, and then taken over by police/state troopers/National Guard swarm the parking lot and take stance.

It was uneventful and peaceful until 2am when we left. We saw the *old Vinyl record store get damaged, a lot of graffiti (and street racing for some super entertaining reason). Met many passionate individuals and felt pride for taking a stand. It was a night, I will never forget.
I will keep making my voice heard and be an ally for this movement. This isn't over.
*this location was actually the first big vandalism act. Windows were busted out. People in the group were mad and a fight almost broke out because a man accused a female of breaking the window and he tried to swing on her. It was intense.
