Thirty years Jason’s s senior, I had done well for myself first as a contractor, and then eventually in business when I opened my own construction firm and assisted some of the city's best architects. When my daughter suggested we venture to a spa to spend some “quality time” together I knew I’d have to swallow my pride to make her happy. 

Rejuvenating Waters was the premier men’s spa in the city. Catering to an elite clientele providing massages, facials, and manscaping services. When we arrived the receptionist informed us that my daughter had booked a full-day package for us including massages, mud baths, and full body salt scrubs. 

We had arrived early to make full use of the locker room’s amenities. I had brought a bathing suit with me to unwind in the whirlpool and sauna. 

“Alright here is everything you need,” the receptionist said as he handed us both white terrycloth robes, towels, and plastic slippers. “Now for hygiene purposes, we ask that you both shower thoroughly and then use all of the facilities au naturel.” 

I looked at Jason and the attendant puzzled.

We entered the bank of lockers where three dozen floor-to-ceiling oak lockers formed a horseshoe around a couple of wooden benches. Further, into the locker room, a sign noted that the wet room contained showers, a dry sauna, a steam room, and a whirlpool. Beyond that was a tranquil lounge where men stretched out on day beds sipping cucumber water and waiting to be called back to the private treatment rooms.  

Jason made quick work of choosing a locker and beginning to undress. I found an open locker two doors down and followed suit. I emptied my pockets and slowly unlaced my shoes, in no rush to embrace the inevitable awkward situation. 

Jason, on the other hand, had already relieved himself of all his clothes other than his crisp white Tom Ford briefs. For the love of God, even his underwear was preppy.

I quickly tied up my robe and was fully covered in the nick of time before two guys entered the bay of lockers and started toweling off. I slipped on the plastic sandals and was off to the showers. 

On my walk to the wet room, I noticed how short the robe was, it barely grazed my knee. Walking with a wide gait was a sure-fire way to expose the family jewels. I also noticed how poorly the slippers fit. One size fits all my big fat ass, I thought. 

Thankfully the shower stalls were private and I was able to rinse off without incident. I dried off, re-tied my robe, and ventured out of the locker room to the lounge.

Jason had found a place on the opposite wall from the locker room, meaning I had to walk around the water feature and most of the occupied beds to meet him. I took small deliberate steps, intent on not letting anything pop out of my robe. Just as I was about to make it to the daybed my oversized slipper flew off my foot. It made a pretty loud clang as it hit the stone floor so many of the men had turned to see where the noise came from.

A/N: Thank you for the reblogs and the likes on the first chapter! :) Also, this thing about the dance classes in the Navy Base is entirely my headcanon, it doesn’t exist in real life (they wouldn’t exist in the story either if Maggie’s father wasn’t a vice admiral).

Chapter 2 - La Cubanita

A smile touched Maggie Rose Miller’s lips as she looked around the club and saw people gathering on the dance floor. She was standing next to the DJ set wearing a red dress with a flowy skirt and dancing shoes, observing the forming crowd. She spotted Phoenix next to two other aviators with the call signs Payback and Fanboy. A smile touched Maggie’s lips as her friend waved to her. She had mentioned she would have this workshop in the club La Cubanita, but she wasn’t expecting Phoenix to come. Yet she was happy to see her and her colleagues there.

Besides being a romance writer, Maggie was also working as a dance instructor. It all started during her college years when she got a job as a receptionist in a dance school and fell in love with salsa so much that over the years she became an instructor. She wasn’t considering making a career out of dancing until another company bought the publishing company she was working for and they terminated her contract. As the saying goes, when a door closes, another one opens, because that was what gave Maggie the push to apply for a teacher training course. That was also the time when she finished her first novel and started sending it to publishers. And now she was a certified dance instructor, specialized in Cuban salsa, but she was also trained in ballroom dances as well. She wouldn’t be able to train competitive ballroom dancers, but it was enough in the social field. She did that training after she gave a crash course to sailors and other Navy people before the Navy Ball a few years ago after her father found out that his subordinates could not dance. It started as a single course, but then the officers found it useful and it became a regular thing. She met Phoenix on a course like this and now it felt nice to see aviators in her workshop again.

She felt a hand on her shoulder and turning around she saw her fellow instructor and long-time dance partner, Toni Álvarez, a San Diego-born Cuban guy in his mid-thirties.

“Are you ready?” he asked.

Maggie flashed a smile at him and nodded her head. “Let’s do this!”

Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw couldn’t care less about the salsa workshop when he arrived at La Cubanita that night. He only came to this place to unwind, to keep his thoughts off Maverick, the mission, his father. He didn’t want to go to The Hard Deck to listen to Hangman’s mocking. He knew it would lead to a fight which wouldn’t help with his chances to be part of the team to eliminate that uranium factory. Not to mention that he didn’t want to get banished from the bar either as Penny wasn’t a big fan of fistfights.

Too early, he stated in mind, realizing that the workshop was still on, but at least he had some time for a drink before hitting the dance floor. Surprisingly, he found Bob, Phoenix’s Weapon Systems Officer and roommate at the bar, sipping a glass of orange juice. Rooster wasn’t expecting him to be in a club like this, but who knew, dancing might be Bob’s secret talent.

“Phoenix and the others are in the workshop,” the WSO told him, gesturing towards the dance floor.

Rooster didn’t take long to find her, paired up with Payback, and he also noticed Fanboy with a brunette girl.

“Now let’s try it with music, okay?” he heard the instructor’s voice which drew a smile on his face as he recognized her. And he had to admit, she looked great in red.

“That’s Maggie, Phoenix’s friend,” Bob told him.

“I know who she is,” Rooster said, still smiling. Maggie the murderer.

Once the workshop ended, Maggie joined the aviators and they went to the bar together to find Bob who wasn’t on his own anymore.

“Hi Maggie,” Bob waved at her, smiling. “Do you remember Rooster?”

Seeing the mustached aviator, the dance instructor froze for a moment. Then, as she recognized him, a grin broke out on her face. Although not exactly for being happy to see him. She was, but what made her even happier was realizing that she hadn’t even thought about him in the last few days. Not a single thought. Which was remarkable, because in the past , whenever Maggie Rose Miller crossed paths with an attractive man who showed even the slightest interest in her, she tended to develop a crush on them, or sometimes worse - to fall in love with them way before anything could have happened between them.

Love was just another field for Maggie to be a disappointment in. All of her close friends were already married with children, while she felt like she couldn’t get a date to save her life, which was quite ironic for a romance writer. Had Alanis Morissette known about this, she would have put it into her song.

It took her a long time to change the ways she thought about love and romance (in real life, not in her novels), a lot of hard work to get to the point of meeting someone attractive and not imagining every possible scenarios to run into him anywhere in the city and not spending hours thinking about how much she didn’t want to overthink it. Despite she hadn’t said it out loud, she was so desperate for love, for real romance that she clinged on even the smallest sign of affection. And now she was facing the mustached piano guy in a Hawaiian shirt whom she had an interesting conversation with, but whom she didn’t even think about even though she found him attractive. Maggie felt like she was cured of a disease.

“Of course, hello!” she finally said, still smiling, still being over the moon for not thinking about him.

“Didn’t know you were a dance instructor,” the aviator said, unable not to smile back at her. Although he might have wiped it off if he knew the real reason why he was smiling that much. “I thought you were a writer.”

“The two things don’t exclude each other,” she told him.

He couldn’t argue with that. At this moment the party officially started and the DJ began to play some salsa music that called the dancers to the floor. Unexpectedly, Rooster held his hand out to Maggie.

“May I?” he asked.

“Aren’t you afraid to dance with the teacher?” she teased him.

“I like challenges.”

“Good to know that,” Maggie said with a smile, taking his hand and they headed to the dance floor.

She was curious what he would do as most Top Gun pilots thought they could dance when they were actually on the same level as one’s uncle after five shots of tequila at a wedding reception. There were exceptions, of course, but nine out of ten cocky hotshots who thought dancing workshops were derogatory, belonged to Top Gun.

Rooster, however, seemed to be one of the exceptions. Maggie didn’t know his opinions on workshops, but he definitely could dance. In fact, he was a lot better than she had expected. If it made him any nervous that she was on a more advanced level, he didn’t show it. He didn’t know all the different steps, but he could lead the ones he knew smoothly and with confidence. He’d be every girl’s dream in a beginner class, she thought with a small laugh. A good leader, with warm (and dry) hands, and on top of that, he was good looking as well. And seemed to enjoy dancing. So did Maggie. She had a smile for everyone she danced with, but a good partner could make her glow, no matter which level they were on. She still couldn’t wipe the smile off her face when Rooster led her back to the others after the song ended. She couldn’t help but notice that he was grinning like an idiot as well.

“How’s the murder going?” the aviator asked when he sat down next to her sometime later.

“Not very good, because you’re still here,” she joked after taking a sip of her drink.

“You’re the one keeping me alive,” he pointed it out, “as you’re the murderer.”

“Only because you dance,” she said. “And you do it pretty well. And you’re a Top Gun pilot. Is there anything you can’t do?”

“Well, I’m a terrible cook,” he told her while eating a handful of peanuts from the bowl in front of them. “And I hope you’ll never be in my team in Pictionary.”

A smile touched Maggie’s lips and she found herself wondering if he was just being modest (which wasn’t like a prototypical Top Gun pilot at all) or if he was indeed bad at drawing.

“You cannot be much worse than me,” she said. “I even struggle with stick figures. I’m a disappointment in Pictionary.”

“Is this why they call you ‘Letdown’?” he wondered.

Maggie had to take a sip of her virgin mojito to swallow the self-deprecating jokes that were about to leave her mouth once Rooster mentioned her call sign.

“No-one really calls me like this,” she admitted, “as it’s not an actual call sign.”

It was given to her by one of the aviators in the first group she had ever taught to dance. His name was James Preston with the call sign “Bel Ami”. He told her it was not possible that she was the only one in the room without a call sign and the rest of the group joined him in convincing her to get one. He asked him what was her most defining quality and she said “Disappointment” without thinking which made the whole group go quiet as they weren't expecting such an answer. She tried to brush that off with a joke that it would be too long when James came up with “Letdown” as a synonym and she gladly accepted it. Of course, she had a huge crush on him. She could still recall his smile, but instead of that warm and fuzzy feeling it once gave her, now she only felt a wave of embarrassment. Perhaps it was time to choose a new call sign for herself, even though that would be against the rules, but she wasn’t a pilot, was she?

“But do you know what never disappoints?” she asked, changing the topic, chasing the memory of James “Bel Ami” Preston out of her mind.

“What?” he asked as he shoved another handful of peanuts in his mouth.

“Poison. There are many different kinds and they are not very easy to find. You can put it into someone’s food and they wouldn’t even notice it,” she told him with a mysterious smile then she slowly shifted her gaze to the bowl which made Rooster choke on his peanuts.

For a moment he thought she was serious (he even spat some peanuts out) but then she burst out laughing.

“I’m so sorry, I just had to do this,” she apologized while still shaking with laughter. “I was just joking, I wouldn’t actually poison you. God, you should have seen your face!”

Rooster tried to look cross with her as he was sweeping the salt and the peanuts off his jeans, but he failed as a grin broke out on his face, followed by a chuckle that turned into laughter.

“Fair enough, I was asking for it,” he said, as it was him who started talking about murder and then the peanuts… he had to admit, he would have done the same in a reverse situation. “But for this you have to teach me a new step,” he told her. “Right now.”

“You deserve it,” Maggie said, getting up from her chair, still laughing.

A few hours later, when they walked out of the club, Rooster offered Maggie a ride home.

“I would love to take it, thank you, but I don’t want to walk back to my car tomorrow,” she smiled, gesturing towards a small turquoise Honda in the parking lot. “Maybe next time. Goodnight, Rooster,” she said then headed to her car.

“How can I know there will be a next time?” he asked.

Maggie’s smile grew wider as she turned back around. Digging into her bag she pulled out a flyer of the dance school with the list of the classes held on the Navy Base. She folded it in four then walked to him and put it in his shirt’s pocket.

“There,” she said. “Now you’ll know where to find me.”

Then she went back to her car, making an effort not to look back. She knew it would be extremely hard not to overanalyze everything that had been said and done that night or not to imagine every possible scenario of where this could go, but Rooster wasn’t the only one who liked challenges.

Recommendation of the month:

So Long, See You Tomorrow is only available in film festivals I think? So I had to watch it on a bootleg site but it's worth it, especially for people who like this sort of movie where young men are friends and also possibly boyfriends but are separated for reasons and then the story takes place a decade or two later a la His (2020), Your Name Engraved Herein, Life: Love On The Line, etc. This one has a fun parallel universes thing to it though but it's still got the slow, slice-of-life vibe to it rather than any hard sci-fi

Overall Impression: It's a good one! High quality with good acting and interesting storylines that are unique in BL. It didn't hit me as hard as it seemed to hit some other people though and I'm not thinking about it much at all since finishing. I think Jim/Wen's relationship was one of the weakest aspects of the show to me because I didn't care nor did I really feel anything. I loved Heart and Li Ming, I enjoyed getting to see Jim grow and also how his relationship with Li Ming changed, I liked getting to see Wen and Alan's flashbacks and to present tense relationship, I like Gaipa showing up once in a while to be bright, I thought Gaipa and Leng's interactions were funny, I loved Li Ming as a character so much, I wished to be him so badly.

Overall Impression: The main female lead was whatever, wish she was just good at something. Whether it be fighting demons, fighting back via kindness and empathy, or actual power due to her status/wealth/connections. She's not the worst ever because she can still stand up for herself and she has personality but I mourn that they've written her like this. Van is just fucking boring and I don't care. My beloved Johan <3333 I liked his charming, cocky, beautiful character who was so intrigued by everything going on as if he really was 20 and curious about everything but also I liked his apprehension when it came down to it. The storyline with his brother was so T.T Also curious to see the evil brother half-demon Guntan and his sidekick niece Yeom-ji. They're both pretty cool compared to our 2 main characters. I wish the show flowed better in terms of the sequence of scenes and pacing and the main characters were more intriguing.

Overall Impression: Literally how was it worse than part 1? Especially when we focused more on Guntan and Yeom-ji than fuckass Miho and Van? Maybe because of less focus on Johan (I wanna know his backstoryyyyyy) and also just incomprehensible writing/plot direction. Yeomji and Johan my beloveds + Guntan being cool were the highlights. Hated the dumbass cliffhanger ending. such a forgettable show.

Overall Impression: Good but not great. I liked the first quarter and last quarter most because there was more action whereas the middle half was slower and was more people-based. There were different characters who had distinct personalities/circumstances and I like the fucked-in-the-head neighbours trope but most of the side characters were pretty one-dimensional. I wish we got to see some actual proper satisfying murder. The romance was barely there but it was still cute. I liked how comfortable they were with each other and I liked the platonic/non-romantic moments as well.

Overall Impression: This was pretty fun overall since I haven't watched much Irish television nor do I know many Irish people, so it was fun to get to peek into the culture and vibe of the 1990s Ireland through this. Also, the girls are all so different and also terrible in many ways; I do love it when characters are people I'd hate it real life and I don't think I'd be able to stand any of these people (maybe Clare, maybe James), so it's fun to see them go around wreaking havoc.

Overall Impression: It's sad that I've watched worse kBLs but since I had some expectations while going into this, it's more disappointing. I don’t really care for boss/employee romances in general and i think the fact that it’s positioned as wholesome/cute here so far isn’t working for me. if you’re gonna have the boss kiss the intern out of the blue while said intern is drunk, it needs to be framed in more of a rancid way for it to still be fun; dabble more with the weird power dynamics and lean into the bad vibes lol

Overall Impression: I really liked the first 5 episodes when there was so much contempt but Taehyun couldn't stop himself from terrorizing or goading Da Yeol and Da Yeol couldn't stop noticing how beautiful Taehyun was, and then the friendship that bloomed in that but still with an edge. I didn't quite get the reason for separation in episode 6 and think the last episode was cutesy but out-of-character sort of. Still, overall a pretty good one; reminds me of a mix of Blueming and Utsukushii Kare. I was giddy so many times while watching this, especially the first half and was clutching my head and curling my toes despite it not being romantic, just full of tension.

Overall Impression: No matter what I think about the story/character/acting in these types of movies like this, along with His (2020), Life: Love On The Line, Your Name Engraved Herein, they make me feel a certain way. Even if I don't cry, some parts make have slightly glassy eyes and my chest constricts with the emotions. These feel human in a specific way and I can't take it always, but these drawn-out, slice-of-life movies where young men are separated and then reunite to be friends/lovers decades later is so good. Also I thought it was funny that I kept waiting for the parallel universes to come into it without realizing when we'd slipped into a different universe lol Also, this whole movie we got to see how Kang Hyun affected Dongjoon but Dongjoon affected Kang Hyun enough for him to write about parallel universes in his novel

1. What are your fave fanfic tropes/ao3 tags and why? guilty pleasure or otherwise.

Oh, like you, Anon, I too worship at the Altar of Angst.

While I'm paying my respects at said altar, throw me some hurt/comfort; a meaty slow burn; time-honoured 'enemies to lovers'; great humour; bromance; intimate m/m slashy goodness with some raw yang energy and I'm all but singing Hozier's "Take me to Church."

As for why? Well, combine all those things together and for me it creates a rich and dynamic experience I can really sink my teeth into. Sure, PWP can be fun, a quick-hit pick-me-up...but it often leaves me jonesing for the stronger stuff. Because I do love layered intimacy in the fics I read, especially with the m/m slash pairings. The edge of vulnerability that never loses its capacity to turn, like a blade, from smooth steel to the razor’s edge...then back again...

I especially gravitate towards such a dynamic when reading my m/m pairings. And you'll probably notice most of these pairings (90%) are with warrior/soldier archetypes.

They are my sweet remedial poison.

As for the altar, there's something about the angst that nourishes me. And ruins me. I'm pretty sure there's some eloquent quote about that delicious interplay and the feeling it evokes. Don't get me wrong, I hate when things slide into emo-depresso mode. There's a difference between depth and darkness. I like the deep. Doesn't always have to be dark.

2. Do you have any sort of process when it comes to developing a character, or getting into the characters head? What does that look like?

It looks like headphones on, eyes closed (or vacant stare, ha, either works as I zone out)....and total immersion into the character. Obviously this varies depending on whether I am tackling an OC or whether I'm writing fanfic. The former is a hell of a lot more immersive for me. The latter involves getting into their established trivia/meat and digging under their skin. OCs require a whole different level of madness from me. I love what they bring out in each other

I love what they challenge in each other

I ache for the tragedy and secrets surrounding them

I adore the loyalty they exhibit; Merlin's devotion and Arthur's protectiveness...it belies the arrogant neglectful way Arthur behaves and hits on his deeper nature, beneath the princely surface

I love Merlin's depth of feeling in all things (seriously, this actor draws me in with his capacity to convey emotion without a damn word) and how his sensitivity does not in any way diminish his strength -- the secrets he has to keep from Arthur are heart-rending at times

I love how hard Arthur clings to his pride and arrogance whilst his vulnerability often betrays him; in his eyes, his sudden rough humour, or in his unconscious actions.

Their banter is good fun; especially the re-direct when things get too intimate or familiar, namely for Arthur.

I love their integrity as people and how that integrity causes them to infuriate one another yet also how it cements them closer together

...I'm sure there are more reasons. I'm not yet finished with the series...so there will undoubtedly be more.

Look at that gushy list. You can tell I'm swimming in the feels of these two at the moment.

"Mockingjay", Chapter 7

Part 1: The Ashes

Chapter 7: The group lands in District 8. They bring Katniss to a make-shift hospital and she's afraid to go in. We meet certified bad bitch Commander Paylor, who Katniss seems to want to impress. She is surprised when the injured are happy to see her. It's like when actors who play superheroes visit sick kids in the hospital. Afterward, Boggs gets word of incoming bombers. He shields Katniss with his body. Haymitch tells her she can't be spotted and needs to reach a bunker. When Katniss realizes they are targeting the hospital, she attempts to join the forces firing back. She finds Paylor, who is amused Katniss has escaped Boggs, and Paylor describes how to shoot the hoverplanes down. After hitting the wrong hoverplane the first time, Katniss fires an explosive arrow (thanks, Beetee!) and gets a direct hit the second run. The hospital was hit and Katniss gives her line to camera.

-- Boggs seems to know Paylor. They have probably interacted before. It makes me wish he were in charge of District 13 instead of Coin. But it's also interesting that the three major military commanders we meet are Paylor, Lyme and Coin (though Coin doesn't appear to be a soldier herself I think she is in charge of D13's soldiers the way the American President is "Commander-in-Chief"). All women. I don't think it would be that way if our current North America went to war.

-- It might also be worth noting that Boggs, Lyme and Paylor are all portrayed positively. The soldiers are good. It's the politicians (Snow and Coin) that are war criminals, for the most part. That might be overly simplistic but considering Collins' dad was in Vietnam, I see where she is coming from.

Boggs hustles us off the road toward a row of warehouses as a second hovercraft comes in for a landing. This one brings crates of medical supplies and a crew of six medics...

Six medics doesn't seem like a lot given how large the facility is described, but I guess they all die anyway...

For an instant the world recedes and there is just his flushed face, his pulse visible at his temple, his lips slightly parted as he tries to catch his breath.

This made me think of "bomb time" in TBOSAS and Jessup protecting Lysistrata.

As I hurry toward the ladders at the far end of the warehouse, the sight of Messalla and one of the insects emerging from behind an air duct surprises me. I thought they'd still be hunkered down in the alley.

Do we know which "insect" this is? For some reason I want it to be Pollux.

I remember all those years in the woods, listening to Gale rant against the Capitol. Me, not paying close attention. Wondering why he even bothered to dissect its motives. Why thinking like our enemy would ever matter. Clearly, it could have mattered today. When Gale questioned the existence of the hospital, he was not thinking of disease, but this. Because he never underestimates the cruelty of those we face.

I think this is another important thing to remember about Gale. He understands the Capitol. He can think like Snow would the same way he can think like prey when he sets his snares. And this is a useful skill to have during a war with the Capitol. But it also seems like a curse to know these things when the war is over. You know?

long time, no see

happy 2024! the website layout on here has changed so dramatically that i can barely recognize it. i hate to admit that it took me a couple of minutes to find my followers...

anyways, hey! it's been a while. i jumped ship off of here... god... who knows how long that was? i genuinely feel like it was a permanent move circa 2015. but that's not what im here to talk about.

after the loss of twitter circles, i've struggled finding a place to put my thoughts. don't worry, this blog definitely won't be it but i thought it would be fun to put a little reflection on here as my final post (probably forever?) on this funny blogging website that i decided to use back in 2009 (I'm pretty sure my archives go that far back.... which is certainly something i cherish to see how much I've changed)

so many of you either have known me as eddie, edward, mukuro, bajime, hajime..... lord knows this list goes on. im eddie! or if you want to use my online user, i go by haunter now. a lot has changed since i stopped using this platform regularly! i think i hard quit tumblr maybe around 2016? you can see on my profile that i came back and reblogged some things, but i think it was around the time of my twitter bot's birth (@nintendoqt) when i really stopped using it permanently.

i'm writing this as a reflection of where i've been and where i came from when i first started using this funny website. im officially a couple of months away from graduating college with a bachelors in computer science! that means I'll be a real deal certified software engineer this coming may.

but don't you worry! i got some real time experience as a software engineer last year, right before my senior year began. i worked as a software engineer for the military/government! yeah, that's right... tumblr user Panchams was a military scientist (intern, but it counts). crazy right? and in just a couple of months i'll be hitting the biggest milestone of my life so far which is college graduation.

back when i began this blog, it was towards the end of 2009 and my myspace girlfriend at the time karina recommended i join because the community from our beloved myspace was jumping ship. i jumped in and well, the rest is history.

2009 eddie was a fidgity, undiagnosed autistic relentless kid. it's kind of crazy looking back on that era because i'm so proud of kid me going out of my way to socialize by going to conventions at every possible event he could go to. i would even wear cosplay and force myself out of my comfort zone to talk and take pictures with complete strangers.

to summarize my academic journey to save some space here, i really sucked at math. my math classes were so horrible, i actually got placed senior year in high school in the lowest math possible for seniors (something like college math help course or something, while the other kids were doing calc 1 or 2). but look at me now, baby! i went from pre-algebra all the way to calculus 2 in college, as well as discrete mathematics (possibly the hardest math class anyone outside of a math degree could ever take). i passed them all! it wasn't easy. i failed calculus 1 on my first try. my community college professor even told our entire class in a very vague way that we should commit suicide via bullet if we didn't pass it cuz we would never pass if we couldn't pass his class lol.

caught myself yapping there for a second. anyways, i really just wanted to say that i was a fidgety autistic child with such huge dreams and wonders. you can see throughout my entire blog's lifecycle that i've felt a special connection to characters like pokemon's red, sasuke from naruto, mukuro from katekyo, cloud from final fantasy 7 et etc.... you get it!

i think my life could've easily been one of complacency and laziness. after all, i am the only one in my immediate family to have attended college or even be in STEM whatsoever. my father was a horse trainer and my mom did random odd jobs/cleaning jobs as a kid. i could've easily been stuck forever in poverty and never aspired to do anything with my life. outlets like tumblr, gaia, twitter, youtube, the list goes on but these shaped me in ways that i am beyond thankful for.

as well as pokemon and the other games i mentioned, they gave me a lifeline. those characters i hooked onto as a kid which basically shaped how my personality is... i genuinely wouldn't have it any other way.

what is blud yapping about!!!! i end this weird ramble yapping session to update where my life is and where im headed. I've mentioned graduation (LETS FUCKING GOOO!) but i am beyond excited to be a big boy software engineer (no intern in the title!)

i'm pining for the bay area after graduation. i know, i sound like a lunatic going straight to san francisco as a new grad but.... you only live once! how cliche right, a new software dev moving to san francisco... the story writes itself.

don't worry, i have backup plans! if i can't make enough I'll be sure to live amongst the cows in arkansas (maybe oregon?! who knows.) big things are coming into my life, an entire chapter of my life finishing (the college years? academy saga?) and i'm just happy that i kept pushing. i'm glad i kept trucking on and will have some form of a tangible life that i will create with my own two hands.

happy new years! i don't think anyone will read this but... thank you! thanks tumblr for everything. maybe one day I'll go through and read my #priv or whatever i used to signify as my private posts here eventually. that day won't be today, but maybe when im in my SF apartment?!

****THE RAP PUNDIT'S PICKS: 150 Songs From 2023****

This year, it's just 150 songs that I love for different reasons (okay, well maybe 150 and a bunch of honorable mentions, but who's counting).

The genre is far too deep, far too diversified, and far too subjective to get into arguments about what's the definitive “best” 10, 50, 100, etc., now it's all about just sharing the music that we love, and hoping we don't forget too many of our personal favorites along the way.

I just tried to stick to two rules:

only one song per project, and unless multiple projects were released along with different collaborators, no solo artist could have songs included from multiple different albums that dropped this year

feature work does NOT count towards the above at all (hell I could have put 20 songs on here with multiple feature verses from the likes of Rome Streetz, Benny, Semiratruth, billy woods, Babytron, Certified Trapper, Earl and Lungs and called it pretty perfect)

As always, I hope you find at least one song on this list that you previously skipped over, but now realize that you love. Also, please feel free to send me some picks that I didn't mention anywhere on here, I would love to hear more takes from other fans and writers (especially from folks who I frequently connect with on Twitter). 1. "27 Braids" - Earl Sweatshirt

The sound I wanted, from the album we have been waiting for. To me, this is the epitome of what I want to hear from Earl and The Alchemist. Alc's dusty loops backing Earl's stream of consciousness, his verse feeling like it rose from closing his eyes, leaving his pen hand on a notepad and just letting it flow. Voir Dire might not be for everyone, but for fans of both artists, it yielded some unforgettable moments of connection between the two underground icons. "27 Braids" is the audio version of a brief, marijuana-laced jolt of reflection that hits you somewhere between 2:30 and 4:30 a.m. during a woozy Saturday night trip home on the L Train...so perhaps it's just a personal favorite from 2023 because I miss those nights in NYC? Or, maybe I'm just grateful that there's music that perfectly sums up that feeling, since I'm too far removed from that scene to live it again. Whatever it is, I dig it.

2. "The Flexible Unreliability Of Time And Memory" - Armand Hammer

This album felt to me like "a moment" album. The vision that clearly went into crafting the sound of this album, will continue to resonate with every listen. The best word I would use to describe We Buy Diabetic Test Strips is layered. Every verse, every background vocal, every crudely clipped sound effect, every instrument, every Producer involved...all went into the same stew, forming a unified experience of an album that feels unlike anything I've heard since the confident, rebellious sensibilities of Cannibal Ox's The Cold Vein. billy woods and ELUCID are in peak form throughout the project, but I finally decided on this song off the strength of billy's verse paired with Child Actor's otherworldly production.

3. "fukumean" - Gunna

While Young Thug and YSL records were swallowed up by legal trouble this year, it would seem that an album drop from Thugga protege Gunna would have consisted mostly of some hastily thrown together tracks from the vaults in order to simultaneously capitalize on the negative publicity, as well as a strategic counter to the controversy that surrounded Gunna during the rollout of this album. Think again. A Gift & A Curse is stacked with catchy hooks, standout beats, and singles with high replay value, making it easily one of the strongest mainstream rap albums of the year. If you disagree, please let me know exactly when you stopped hearing this song everywhere.

4. "Mussel Beach" - MIKE feat. El Cousteau & Niontay

For an artist that presents himself as relatively chill, MIKE proved once and for all that he actually has no chill, because he dropped two of the year's best albums within a month of each other, and preceded to make most MCs out there sound mid by comparison. Burning Desire is an album where so many of his skills as a MC and a Producer really gel, and after a few listens I think it becomes increasingly clear how impactful of an artist he has been to a whole generation of MC's that are making waves right now.

5. "Baby Steps" - billy woods & Kenny Segal feat. ELUCID & Benjamin Booker

One of the strongest songs on one of the strongest albums of 2023. billy woods is simply not playing fair right now, the quality of his writing paired with his ubiquitous presence in the underground rap scene, simply doesn't make sense from a quantity AND quality standpoint. His chemistry with Kenny Segal is superb, and "Baby Steps" is another perfect example of how they kept rewind buttons busy this year.

6. "Johnny Dang" - That Mexican OT feat. Paul Wall & Drodi

The first of two Texan MC's that I *never* would have guessed would be here at the start of 2023. That Mexican OT oozes charisma, and he absolutely slays the hook on "Johnny Dang". The whole Lonestar Luchador tape is a banger, but as far as noise-making rap singles go, not many come close to the replay value of this head nodder.

7. "GOMD" - Veeze

I probably could have selected almost any song off Ganger. And I almost did - I narrowed the options down to six different Veeze tracks, but ultimately went with this firecracker of a single because to me, it screamed breakout record. There were a lot of great records that dropped in 2023, but not many artists kept fans waiting for years only to exceed all expectations. Veeze had himself a helluva year.

8. "Southside Story" - Hoodlum

This cut successfully stayed in my head for pretty much the entire year. Hailing from the Southside of San Antonio, Hoodlum shares something in common with many of my favorite MC's right now: a unique voice repping for an area that has yet to receive it's flowers. While San Antonio might not have the same deep well of rap stars that Flint, Milwaukee, and Buffalo became known for in recent years, it's clear to me that Hoodlum has "it", so I am looking forward to seeing what 2024 has in store for this prolific young Texan veteran.

9. "Play Dis!" - Maxo feat. ZelooperZ

Maxo had a prolific 2023, but it was his second project release of the year that colored outside the lines just a little bit more than it's predecessor, with great results. This collaboration with ZelooperZ wasn't just a standout off of Debbie's Son, it was one of the strongest songs of the year.

10. "OPEN LETTER" - dp0mmy feat. K9shmere

Of any talented artist in my top 10, dp0mmy is probably the name that remains the most under the radar - but I doubt that it will stay that way for much longer. I strongly urge everyone to check out this young Producer's catalogue to not only hear his own sensational work, but the work from some of the most talented underground artists bubbling up front the Atlanta area right now.

A new fic (because I've got no notable self-restraint)

Okay, it's new-ish. Truth is, I was planning on writing it about this time last year for a Dabi-themed exchange and because I had my work life implode on my for hellish months, I ended up dropping every event I was in at the time. I mostly used exchanges as excuses to force myself to write fics I wanted to write anyway, so it wasn't a particularly big sacrifice on my side.

But then the DabiShou zine I'm going to be a guest in put up a DabiShou Kinktober list.

Now, to be clear, I work retail-adjacent and October is just a really bad output month for me because it's the run-up to holiday where everyone hits the damn panic button, and I usually come home exhausted. November is much less stressful and insane (on the whole). Chances are really good that unless I somehow get some crazy early motivation to work on a -Tober list so that I'm only posting instead of writing over October, I'm not going to do a lot of October new writing.

This one may be up for debate this month as I may be stress writing this time.

That said, the damn DabiShou Kintober List had "Secret Marriage" as today's prompt.

I am a certified sucker for arranged marriage/marriage of convenience-type plots

I have had this fic sitting in my drafts for over a year now (I've only got about 13k written, and I expect it to be close to 50k), but I've commissioned art for it, and dammit I want that fic to get finished.

Now I have an excuse to post it. It's not a good excuse, but it is an excuse.
