para practicar lo que estoy aprendiendo con las materiales y para usar las materials:
leeré un capítulo del libro de texto a la semana

leeré dos cuentas a la semana
escucharé un episodio de podcast al día
Tumblr media
my spanish study plan:
i found a web page with some advice for learning languages and now i have a plan for studying spanish, lmao.
my first goal:
to write at length about my days instead of writing in a few grammatical tenses or in a few sentences i will study for 30 minutes a day (probably 9-9:30pm because university is hard ;-;)

hi :)
i just wanted to pop into your ask box to say thank you for writing interstate! (as well as precedence!). interstate is, to this day, my favorite fic, and also, it is the fic that inspired me to start writing fanfiction. i've read it like a million times- i have a pdf on my computer and an epub on my phone so i can highlight my favorite parts. (i swear i'm not crazy, just autistic lol). i could go on and on about how your writing is perfect. the characterization, the plot, the prose itself. i generally hate happy endings in fics but you managed to write one that i love. i'll never stop thinking about how you wrote the sex scene in one sentence. to be able to get across the whole essence in one simple sentence takes so much talent i could never. and the way you did the pov switch without switching povs (where norman is imagining what ethan is doing) was brilliant! (i am awful about accidentally switching povs)
i wish i could explain myself better, but i'm not as good with words as you are.
anyway, since i'm here i also have a question, and i hope it's not too vague or stupid etc. but how do you do it?? (i guess what i mean is, what books/other media inspires your writing? do you have a writing routine or a secret tip? or is it just natural talent?)
sorry for being a weirdo but your fic is my roman empire so to speak
thanks again for writing and publishing (especially in our tiny little fandom!!)
pardon how late this is, i'm not at all good at tumblr lmao. but ahhh, thank you, you're very kind! it's so great to hear that something i wrote meant so much to someone else, and it's SO great to hear that it got someone else writing their own fic! no judgment whatsoever about the hoarding of copies, my autism is the cause of many mysterious choices i make in life 😌
it's a little embarrassing in a way because i most definitely don't consider myself a creator of great literature or anything, i just work hard on my fics and take the process of writing them seriously (maybe too seriously)... but i'm going to try to answer your question/request for tips as sincerely as i can!
read. like for real, read other people's writing! i actually don't do this nearly as much as i would like to anymore and i can tell my writing is a little rustier for it. when i read other people's writing, i sometimes feel like i'm filling up an invisible "tank" that holds my ability to do words good. :') as a personal example, i have a short story anthology by vladimir nabokov that i've been slowly whittling my way through for a million years -- i loved his prose the first time i read it in middle or high school and i think it has been a big influence on my desire to look for unexpected turns of phrase and vocabulary words i didn't know before. sometimes i like to keep a list of new vocab words i encounter as i read to look up later, but usually i end up getting distracted and looking them up as i go. 😩 though this is easier than ever if you're reading digitally, i suppose! i think learning to identify the things you like in writing is really important. for me, that has a lot to do with not only finding the exact words i want to describe something, but also their cadence/musicality in a sentence. i remember very little about the poetry terms i learned in school, but i think learning about the anatomy of poems can be a really useful tool when it comes to prose also! or if nothing else, it can be fun to try experimenting with shuffling around the order of words or substituting one synonym for another to see how it changes the overall sound and feel of a sentence.
write! then tweak/rewrite. i actually hate the advice "you gotta just write" lmao... pisses me off every time because i know it's true 😭 i can dick around writing notes/meta as long as i like (and i do), but there's truly no other way to make progress like just fucking writing SOMETHING down even if you hate it and think it's bad. i used to get academic papers done in college and grad school by quickly and sloppily blasting down the basic gist of my main points like a 10 year old and then going back and revising it to sound like an adult. it's a little different with fiction because i'm writing something i already actually want to write, but it can still help to jot down the bare bones of a scene even if i don't even use it in the end. writing out dialogue can help a lot in my experience. i do feel pretty strongly that revisions are nearly always necessary -- i don't always get my fics beta'd by another person, but at minimum i have to put it down and re-read it for myself to make sure everything is flowing the way i want it to. betas really are helpful, though, because a LOT of times i'll think something makes perfect sense in my head only to find out my friend has no idea what i'm on about lmao. this can also help with things like switching povs, like you mentioned! there's nothing wrong with having a pov switch happen in your fic, mind you! it's just that ideally it's happening because you wanted it to happen instead of like, uh-oh, i need to convey some information about norman that ethan doesn't have a way of knowing. it's funny you mention the fap/fantasy scene because i think that's literally what happened when i was writing it, like... i think i was like "hmm, i want to emphasize that ethan is most definitely Into norman and this thing that's growing between them, but i've stuck with norman's pov this entire time and i don't want to put one solitary scene of ethan pov in there, if i can help it... but hey, norman's a profiler! visualizing what people do when they're alone is his whole thing!" so that was the perfect excuse to frame it that way in the end. ✨
canon review for characterization. this has less to do with the mechanics of writing, but honestly, if i had to choose, i'd much rather read a fic that totally nails the characterization than one that's perfect on a technical level. y'know that meme that's like "he would NOT fucking say that"? i do everything i can to avoid eliciting that response lfkdslf. iirc while i was writing interstate i basically always had an LP of heavy rain playing so i could observe the way the characters react in different situations, listen to their speech patterns and the types of words/language they use, and just kind of... idk, absorb the general vibe a little bit, i guess? i know i just mentioned you have to write Actual Story and not just notes to make progress, but i do also tend to have a LOT of notes about like... "okay so norman actually really likes this guy, but the reason he's holding back his feelings is because he's given so much of himself to his work and he's so used to looking at people in the abstract that he struggles to connect with them, leading him over time to decide that he can't or isn't good enough to be what ethan deserves, and what could ethan maybe say or do to help challenge that so they can move forward?" etc etc.... at the risk of being Very Autistic, i find i do a lot of if/then calculations when it comes to plotting character beats. 😅 "if these two particular lonely dudes start to form a connection one night at a bar, what then?"
have a thesis. this feels kind of ridiculously pretentious when i write it out, but it honestly really helps me a lot with staying focused: it's basically me answering wtf my point is. why do i think this fic needs to be written in the first place? it's the thing i want to accomplish, the idea i want to share with people who read it. even if i don't have a solid statement to make, there's always SOME kind of central question i'm trying to answer -- a lot of times, that question is as simple as "man, you know, i really wanna see these two bone. what has to happen for that to be possible?" for precedence i think it was basically just "hey wouldn't it be fucked up if...?" and for interstate it expanded to "hey i think these two deserve a happy ending and they deserve to share it together. what does that look like?"
so i dunno, hopefully all that is at least slightly useful and not just self-indulgent rambling, but thank you for giving me the ability to self-indulgently ramble if nothing else 😭
but above all, please do not doubt your own ability! writing is hard and sometimes sucks but it's also a lot of fun and there's not a right way to tell the story you want to tell, it just matters that you tell it. so... DO 💪

What’s a Netgalley, anyways??!!
I’ve been getting hit with a lot of asks and DMs regarding Netgalley, how it works, and why it’s useful for witches, diviners and mages.
Instead of responding to them all individually, I’m just making this one post to clarify the situation and hopefully give folks tips for getting started on that site!
Tumblr media
What the heck is Netgalley?
In publishing, “galley” is simply another term for an uncorrected proof or advance reader copy of a book. Distributed prior to the books general release, galleys allow authors to receive early feedback and reviews on their work.
Netgalley launched in 2008 as a way of providing digital galleys to reviewers. The site offers 100% digital copies, with a choice between EPUB, Kindle, and PDF formats. Reviews are submitted directly to the publisher via Netgalley, and can be shared on social media.
Wait! You mean they send you free books?!
Yes, they do!
These aren’t physical copies - they’re digital, and are best read on a tablet or eReader. If you dislike reading digital material, this site may not be for you. If, like me, most of your library is digital anyways, you’ll likely find a lot of awesome additions through Netgalley.
Once you’re registered, you can browse their list of publishers, categories, genres and authors. Most books available on Netgalley are either new releases or yet-to-be-released, and titles are periodically added/removed over time.
When you find a book you’d like to read, you can request it from the publisher. The publisher will then look at your Netgalley profile.
If they think you’re a good fit to review the title, you’ll receive the galley copy of the book, and can download it in either Kindle, EPUB, or PDF format directly from Netgalley.
You must write short reviews (I try for at least 500 words each) about each of them. You’ll rate each book with one to five stars, and your long-form review will be submitted to the publisher alongside that.
You’ll also want to post the review to your social media, be it Tumblr, Goodreads, or another platform. Publishers offer galley copies partially as a way of generating buzz about upcoming titles, so it only makes sense that readers would post the reviews publicly.
While Goodreads, Tumblr, and other platforms are perfect for posting reviews of unreleased books, you cannot post a review to Amazon until the book is actually published.
If the book you’re reviewing isn’t yet released, you’ll be prompted to return to the review page and share your review on Amazon once the book comes out. This is a very easy process directly through the Netgalley interface.
What are the requirements?
Well now, I’m not entirely sure. You must, of course, be active and public on a social media platform. This might be Tumblr, Goodreads, Facebook, Linkedin, or even YouTube.
Basically, you need a social media presence where you’ll share your reviews, in addition to submitting them through Netgalley proper.
Different publishers have different requirements and things they look for in a reviewer. This article gives some tips for making your NetGalley profile enticing to publishers.
A lot of people have asked me if Netgalley, or specific publishers, have a minimum amount of followers required for them to send books.  The truth is, I have no way of knowing, and if such a policy exists, it’s not publicly stated.
I will say that when I started on Netgalley in 2017, I received books almost right away after requesting them. As a rule I never mention how many followers I have on this blog, so I can’t be sure if that was a factor in my receiving the books.
Regardless of your stats, there’s no harm in trying out Netgalley, though. And? I doubt they’re as finicky as you might imagine!
What happens if I can’t write the review?
While publishers vary in terms of their requirements for when reviews are completed, most expect a review within three months. But, what do you do if you can’t finish?
Don’t fret!
This happened to me once, too. I received a copy of an herbal anthology, but my Kindle PaperWhite ruined the formatting on it, and I wasn’t able to actually read all of it. I simply clicked the “Will Not Give Feedback” option for the two books that had been in my queue.
If you do this, you can always come back and review the book later, but keep in mind that you do need to submit the reason for not giving feedback. Thus far, Netgalley seems pretty understanding.
What does Netgalley offer, esoterically-speaking?
Netgalley works with several esoteric publishers to bring readers review copies of their books. These include
Llewellyn Worldwide
Sounds True Publishing
Watkins
Those are my three favorites on the site, anyways. There are other occult publishers there, as well as books about religion and spirituality from a variety of perspectives. You can browse their Religion and Spirituality category here.
Since starting in 2017, I’ve reviewed sixteen free books from Netgalley. You can see links to those reviews here on my books page, as well as other book recommendations.
I’ve had quite a positive experience with Netgalley. I highly recommend it to any other bloggers, regardless of what sort of books you’re seeking!

Happy reading!

Hi so I 've fallen into a hole of wanting to get cosey and read for hours, but feeling like nothing is peaking my interest. Would you be able to recommend some multichapter fics (around 6-12) or oneshots that are really immersive from the get go. Something interesting, fun and unique. Basically please can you help a bored gal out of her fic finding rut 😔 xxx
Number of chapters isn’t a good measure because the length of each one varies enormously, depending upon the author. If you go to our Klaine Misc. Finder, you will see tags covering different word count lengths. Here are a few fics around 40k words. If these don’t interest you, come back and tell us what your favorite tropes are and what sort of rating you like to read. - HKVoyage

This is a story of sex, love and the hard choices we make to balance happiness and success.

In College You Know Who You Are by honorarymaraudr
This was written as a response to a prompt on the kink meme: “Kurt goes to college in NYC while Finn goes to college at OSU. Once in a while he goes back to Ohio and visits Finn on campus, where he meets Blaine during a party. The two hit it off immediately but are not looking for a relationship for whatever reason but both have needs, so they settle for a one night stand. Kurt keeps running into Blaine every time he comes back to Ohio (either intentionally or not ;)) and they quickly become friends with benefits. They also have phone/Skype sex and eventually hang out more together outside of the bedroom whenever Kurt is in town, until they realize they might want their relationship to be more than just physical. :)”

The Wonderful World of Origami
This is your portal to the wonderful world of origami. I’m really crazy with origami and even though I didn’t go beyond to become a master of it, I’m still crazy about it. I want to propagate this wonderful art with people everywhere.  And I want to see this values grow and live on for all generations to come.  That is what’s going in my mind why I decided to make a book about it. I would like to make it a vessel, a vessel to propagate and share these enchanting art to my fellow origami devotee  — may they be past, present and future.
How, why, what drove me to come up with this? Easy, I sympathize with many origami artists who tend to forget the folds of even the mundane origami models. I for one is among the many. It doesn't matter how many times I have folded a model, after a few months or so, to my frustration, I very much forget a step or two. I know how infuriating this can be. Imagine that you badly needed to make a simple paper cup, which you have done many times in the past, and just when you needed it... you forgot one teeny-weeny step! It’s so exasperating, I know you’d want to kick yourself for forgetting. Sometimes this is one of the reasons why some of us shy away from origami. You feel irritated because you missed just one, single, solitary fold to complete a model. And you feel frustrated to look for the diagram amidst all your references. And you say to yourself, “Ahhhh! Just forget it!” And just like that, you begin to avoid and even begin to dislike origami.
This is the main reason for this wonderful world of origami book. This is your handy, phone-a-friend, lifeline (hehehe!) final answer to your origami woes. This handy book will make you love origami all over again. Whether you’re a newbie or an enthusiast, this book is for you. There are over 40 origami diagrams featured here and I hope it’s more than enough to satisfy your craving. Whoops, just a minute! If you’re expecting glamorous and hard to make models (like the kawasaki rose or the bladed samurai), I’m sorry this is not for you and you won’t find anything like it here. What you can find here are the simple and basic folds that can easily be done in minutes or even in seconds. Simple origami that can bring smiles to everybody. Folds that can bring happiness to a room and practical models that can be useful on many occasions. Paper cups to hold drinks (and treats), game hats to use in kiddie parties or even a box to put your things in order.
Taking advantage of this wonderful world of origami book, you can easily find those diagrams fast. Unlike printed books (or even PDF, fixed epub, flip-page) where it’s frustrating to find a certain diagram, it’s very easy here. You only need to swipe, swipe, swipe the screen and all is good. And because all the images here are “fit to screen”, you dont need to zoom in and out (while squinting your eyes) trying to get a good view of the diagram. Oh, and the diagrams? They are as clear as the daylight! As I have mentioned earlier, you only need to swipe, swipe, swipe! With its built-in table of contents, you can instantly look and click on your preferred model and instantly be transported to it. Be free of stress!
Since this is a reflowable epub, this is specially crafted to use with mobile phones. Why? It’s because mobile phones are the handiest gadget you always carry around. Hence, this ebook is practically in the palm of your hands whenever and wherever you need it. Computers, laptop and tablets are cumbersome to carry around but your mobile phones are practically a part of you. So be confident, you’ve got your lifeline in the palm of your hands.
Worried you can’t open it? Don’t fret, this epub is like a swiss knife, you can also open this ebook using your computer, tablet or notebook. Too good to be true? Nope, it’s just the way it is!

The one-sentence summary
Successful leaders will take on risk, change and ambiguity.
WHAT THE BOOK SAYS
This book contains all the important stuff about leading well: motivating people, building networks, selling ideas, influencing people, giving feedback, evaluating people, and learning to be lucky
It takes you through the foundations, practice and mastering of leadership, and makes the point that leaders aren’t necessarily at the top of organisations
The main qualities fall into focusing on people, being positive, and being professional (that means having loyalty, honesty, reliability, solutions, and energy)
Leading from the middle involves finding your way through the matrix. Those who fall by the way are:
the expert (technically competent, but that’s all) cave dweller (territorial) politician (political) boy scout (naïve) autocrat (acts as though they already are a leader)
WHAT’S GOOD ABOUT IT
A survey of 1,000 leaders reveals the qualities they look for in emerging leaders:
adaptability, self-confidence, proactivity, reliability, and ambition
Luck is normally down to practice, persistence, and perspective
There are good quotes to be had here:
“ Many sins are forgivable, but disloyalty is not one of them.”
Tumblr media
“An organisation full of Ghengis Khan wannabes is unlikely to be a happy place.”
Tumblr media
“It is possible to learn leadership. If you know how to, you are well on the way to success.”
“The successful leader will take on risk, change and ambiguity.”
There is an interesting checklist of what people want from a good boss:
Shows an interest in my career
I trust them – they are honest with me
I know where we are going and how to get there
I am doing a worthwhile job
I am recognized for my contribution
WHAT YOU HAVE TO WATCH
Not much. This is a well-organised and thoughtful book on leadership
MORE DETAIL
A survey of 1,000 leaders reveals the qualities great leaders need: 3 Ps leading to a fourth:
·People focus
·Positivity
·Professionalism…leading to Performance.
He distinguishes between emerging leaders, leading from the middle, and those at the top.
Leadership foundations
Find the right boss; always deliver; no surprises; ditch the excuses; adapt your style; have an alternative; learn; do what is right; size the prize; understand costs and risks of decisions; follow strategy and values; build consensus; flip a coin – don’t hide, decide; motivate; set direction; communicate; fight the right battles
Towards leadership mastery
Start at the end; take responsibility; raise the bar; drive to action; act the part; keep on learning; set expectations; have a plan; shape your team; set your style; protect your territory; deliver results; craft an agenda
Ineffective leadership behaviours
Ego; no emotional quotient; focus solely on expertise; naïve about networks; hires weak clones; threatened by talent; poor delegation; problem focused; can’t do approach; retreats into comfort zone; political; keen on status.
I’ve been tasked with ‘learning to lead’ for the remaining weeks of this term, inamongst the other things I’m doing. To that end, I’m reading a range of books and articles, watching videos and generally trying to learn from the experts. 🙂
Looking on Amazon, there were lots of 5-star reviews for a book by Jo Owen entitled How to Lead: what you actually need to do to manage, lead and succeed. I’ve just finished the first chapter entitled ‘Focusing on People’ and it has lots of good ideas and advice crammed into it.
Here’s my notes and reflections on what I’ve read:
Leaders are made, not born
Owen says three principles underpin his book:
Everyone can lead
You can load the dice in your favour (but there’s no magic recipe)
You can learn to be a leader
Leadership is not about the position you are in but about the way you behave. Leaders need followers, otherwise they are not leaders! There is no particular intelligence requirement for leadership, but instead some core behaviours:
ability to motivate others
vision
honesty & integrity
decisiveness
ability to handly crises
‘Performance’ is not mentioned in the above, but naturally flows from them.
You don’t need to know it all
Some leaders suffer from ‘altitude sickness’ in that they can’t cope at a higher level when they’ve been successful further down the hierarchy. Sometimes this is due to a perception that you need to ‘have all the skills’ immediately. Instead, good leaders radiate self-confidence and build on their strengths whilst realising that learning is a lifelong process.
Despite being an author and consultant himself, Owen says that people learn from lived experience, not primarily from books, manuals and conferences. That being said, these can help you understand your experiences and build upon them.
Focusing on people
Good leaders focus on other people, not themselves. There are three major elements to this:
Decentring – knowing yourself and how you affect others
Influencing people – selling ideas to them
Managing upwards – influencing the boss
In order to deal with other people you need to know what makes them tick. Owen suggests trying to ascertain their Myers-Briggs personality type. Regular readers will remember that I wrote about such tests back in a post entitled “You can tell a lot about someone from what they’re like.” You don’t have to use the Myers-Briggs indicators – you can use your own such as ‘big picture’ vs. ‘detail’. Understanding what makes your colleagues, and especially your boss, tick helps you press the right buttons.
Selling ideas
Tumblr media
In order to influence others, you need to focus on the third of three levels that are naturally used when you try and sell an idea or object to someone:
Features – the innate characteristics of the idea or object
Benefits – the features people want from the idea or object
Hopes & dreams – what can be achieved through the idea or object
By tapping into peoples’ hopes and dreams you can motivate and inspire them to action. Owen recommends reading Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People, if you haven’t already. I listened to it as an audiobook a while back, but will be purchasing the book soon!
What makes people tick
Owen, rather pessimistically, asserts that fear, greed and idleness makes people tick. These can be seen as ‘influencing levers’. He gives some advice as to how you use these levers:
How To Lead Jo Owen Ebook Reader
Fear – ‘de-risk’ ideas by, for example, running pilot projects.
Greed – be clear r.e. the WIFM? (What’s In It For Me?) factor. This has as much to do with recognition and status as money.
Idleness – find a way in which the idea supports the other person’ agenda. This will motivate them to action.
Owen gives some great advice taken from the world of sales. At the end of the meeting, give the person or group of people to whom you are pitching a choice between two positive ideas. It takes effort to reject the idea completely, so people will usually choose one of your two option, leading to success on your part!
The unforgivable sin
After interviewing 700 leaders, Owen came up with a list of the following traits that they are looking for in emergent leaders:
adaptability
self-confidence
proactivity
reliability
ambition
How To Lead Jo Owen Ebook Cover
Most mistakes are rectifiable and forgivable, but the one unforgivable sin for them is disloyalty. As one put it, ‘Don’t outshine me, don’t outsmart me and don’t outflank me.’ Wise words indeed. :-p
Influencing the boss
Although you are not usually in control of who is your boss, you can still influence your relationship with them. Influencing your boss, says Owen, has three elements:
How To Lead Jo Owen Ebook Free
Finding the right boss (find a sponsor more senior to your immediate boss and make yourself useful to them)
Delivering the right results (a matter of style and substance – use the ‘style compass’ on your boss and what your ‘must-win’ battles are)
Having the right behaviours (you have to adapt to your bosses’ style as they won’t adapt to yours. Make sure they know what you’re good at, what your capacity is, and what your progress is)
Conclusion
How To Lead Jo Owen Ebooks
I enjoyed the first chapter of How to Lead– it was general enough to be applicable without being vague, and opened my eyes to strategies that could work well in my new position. 😀

Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr. In his twisty, gritty, profoundly moving New York Times bestselling-debut--also called 'mandatory reading' and selected as an Editors' Choice by the New York Times--Adam Silvera brings to life a charged, dangerous near-future summer in the Bronx. This special 5th Anniversary Edition features an introduction by Angie Thomas, New York Times bestselling author of The Hate You Give; a brand-new epilogue by Adam, and more. In the months after his father's suicide, it's been tough for sixteen-year-old Aaron Soto to find happiness again--but he's still gunning for it. With the support of his girlfriend Genevieve and his overworked mom, he's slowly remembering what that might feel like. But grief and the smile-shaped scar on his wrist prevent him from forgetting completely. When Genevieve leaves for a couple of weeks, Aaron spends all his time hanging out with this new guy, Thomas. Aaron's crew notices, and they're not exactly thrilled. But Aaron can't deny the happiness Thomas brings or how Thomas makes him feel safe from himself, despite the tensions their friendship is stirring with his girlfriend and friends. Since Aaron can't stay away from Thomas or turn off his newfound feelings for him, he considers turning to the Leteo Institute's revolutionary memory-alteration procedure to straighten himself out, even if it means forgetting who he truly is. Why does happiness have to be so hard?

#1 New York Times bestseller · Seven starred reviews · Boston Globe-Horn Book Award Honor Book “For all the struggle in this book, Thomas rarely misses a step as a writer. Thomas continues to hold up that mirror with grace and confidence. We are lucky to have her, and lucky to know a girl like Bri.”—The New York Times Book Review This digital edition contains a letter from the author, deleted scenes, a picture of the author as a teen rapper, an annotated playlist, Angie’s top 5 MCs, an annotated rap, illustrated quotes from the book, and an excerpt from Angie’s next novel, Concrete Rose. Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least win her first battle. As the daughter of an underground hip hop legend who died right before he hit big, Bri’s got massive shoes to fill. But it’s hard to get your come up when you’re labeled a hoodlum at school, and your fridge at home is empty after your mom loses her job. So Bri pours her anger and frustration into her first song, which goes viral . . . for all the wrong reasons. Bri soon finds herself at the center of a controversy, portrayed by the media as more menace than MC. But with an eviction notice staring her family down, Bri doesn’t just want to make it—she has to. Even if it means becoming the very thing the public has made her out to be. Insightful, unflinching, and full of heart, On the Come Up is an ode to hip hop from one of the most influential literary voices of a generation. It is the story of fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are stacked against you; and about how, especially for young black people, freedom of speech isn’t always free.

Our quiz questions have been written by a VERY experienced Pub Quiz Master. The Quiz Master has been writing Pub Quiz Questions for twenty years and knows the game VERY well, nothing gets past him. Having lived in the United Kingdom, Canada and Germany he is well-travelled and well-read, boasting a natural love for information and trivia.

I am very happy with the quiz pack…
… and I had no problems downloading despite being on a Mac computer. The price is more than reasonable for so many good questions. All in all I am very impressed with your service, wish I had discovered the site before, I just found it by pure accident on Google. Many thanks.
June Fraser, UK
Wow! What can I say!!! Your questions are a breath of fresh air.
I have searched for years to find decent questions for my weekly pub quiz and finally I have found quiz questions that not only meet the level of my quiz players, but also entertain them and bring them back for more … and there’s so many to choose from. Thanks again
Peter Martens, UK
Top Quality Quiz Questions
I have bought lots of questions from other websites similar to yours but I have never found such a consistently good set, until I found this one that is. Thank you for taking the time and effort to share your knowledge. For that price I expected low quality, easy questions but your quiz pack has really blown me away.
Joel Gottlieb, United States
Great questions, that’s for sure.
I bought your quiz pack when you only had 1000 questions and was pretty pleased with the product. Now I check back and see that I can download the updated pack with 1700 of the critters! Thanks for your great service, highly recommended, I will be back, let me know when you have another pack for sale!
Paul Bartos, United States
My Quiz Teams love the questions.
Having ummed-and-arred over whether or not to buy your first quiz pack, I finally decided to take the plunge. I run a pub quiz in Melbourne every Monday night. Prior to buying your product we managed to half-fill the pub, now the pub is packed week after week, all regular players. Anyway, I have since bought your second quiz pack too. Witty questions, pitched at just the right level for my regulars. Cheers Guys, great job!
Mike Parsons, Australia
 OUR QUESTIONS
Not too easy – not too hard AND very well researched:
Most of the questions can be solved by a mixed-ability quiz team, given time and the right thought process. None of them are straight-forward, but who wants to be given straight-forward questions to solve?
Written in English – but not just for Brits or just for Americans:
We’ve written our questions specifically with a worldwide audience in mind.  You won’t find questions about British soap operas that an American could not answer in the same way as you won’t find questions about American football, that only Americans could answer.
Our customer base includes many happy buyers from North America, the UK and Mainland Europe, Australia, India, Thailand and basically anywhere in the world where a quiz can be presented in English.

Translation: I Want to Eat Your Pancreas by Yoru Sumino (Chapter 9)
Tumblr media
Synopsis
One day, I - a high schooler - found a paperback in the hospital. The “Disease Coexistence Journal” was its title. It was a diary that my classmate, Sakura Yamauchi, had written in secret. Inside, it was written that due to her pancreatic disease, her days were numbered. And thus, I coincidentally went from Just-a-Classmate to a Secret-Knowing-Classmate. It was as if I were being drawn to her, who was my polar opposite. However, the world presented the girl that was already suffering from an illness with an equally cruel reality…

I cried. And cried, and cried.
And finally.
When I stopped crying - not intentionally, but because I had no tears left in me - her mom was still seated before me, waiting.
I raised my head, and her mom held out a pale blue handkerchief. Timidly, I received the handkerchief, and still out of breath, I wiped away my tears.
“You can keep it. That’s Sakura’s handkerchief. If you held on to it, I’m sure that girl would be happy too.”
“…………Thank you ……Very much.”
I honestly expressed my gratitude, wiped my eyes and nose and mouth, and stowed the handkerchief in a pocket on my uniform.
I once more assumed the proper posture on the tatami. My eyes were now as red as those of her mom.
“Please excuse me…… For losing my composure……”
Her mom promptly shook her head.
“It’s alright, it’s only normal for children to cry. That girl also used to cry quite a lot. Because she’s always been a crybaby. But you know, around the time she met you, and began writing about the time she spent with you, that girl stopped crying. Not completely though. But still, thank you. Thanks to you, the time she got to live became precious to her.”
I held back the tears that threatened to flow again, and I shook my head.
“The one that received her precious time was me.”
“…………If that’s the case, you should come have a meal with our family sometime. That girl didn’t tell us about anything involving you after all.”
Facing her mom’s sorrowful smile, I wavered once more.
Giving in to my wavering self, I spoke to her mom a little about the memories that I’d shared with the girl. The things that hadn’t been written down in her diary - of course, our game of Truth or Dare, and how we slept on a bed together - I left out. Her mom gave me her undivided attention, nodding countlessly.
Talking about my memories of her made it feel as if my heart was getting lighter, little by little.
The happiness and sorrow that were precious to me remained as they were, but it felt like I was casting off unnecessary weight.
That was why I thought that it was for my sake that her mom was listening to me.
At the end of my story, I made a request to her mom.
“Could I someday come offer my prayers again?”
“Yes, of course. When that time comes, please come and meet my husband and son too. That’s right, together with Kyouko-chan…… Though it looks like you two don’t really get along.”
Exactly like the girl, her mom giggled.
“That appears to be the case, huh. Various things happened, and I came to be hated.”
“It’s not like I’m forcing it, but if possible, Kyouko-chan and you should come join our family for a meal someday. It’s out of gratitude too, but being able to get along too with the two people Sakura treasured would make Auntie happy.”
“That probably depends more on what she thinks than I do, but I’ll keep that in mind.”
After that, we exchanged a few words, and after I promised to come visit on a later date, I stood up. At her firm insistence, I was made to bring the ‘Disease Coexistence Journal’ home. The ten thousand yen my mother had made me bring had been declined.
Her mom saw me out to the entrance. I put on my shoes, said my thanks once more, and just when I put my hand on the door knob, I was called out to.
“That’s right, what was your first name?”
In response to her casual question, I properly turned around, and answered.
“It’s Haruki. My name is Haruki Shiga.”
“Ah, wasn’t there a novelist with that name?”
Once my surprise faded, I felt a smile creep across my mouth.
“Yes, though I don’t know which you may be referring to.”
I once again said my thanks, bade my farewell, and left the front door of the Yamauchi house.
The rain had stopped.
After dinner, I confined myself to my room, and while reading the ‘Disease Coexistence Journal’ once more, I began to think. For a third time, I ended up crying in the midst of reading, but I continued to think still.
What should I do from now on? I thought about what I could do for her sake, for her family’s sake, and for my own sake.
I, who had received the ‘Disease Coexistence Journal’, thought about what I was able to do.
After much thought, I made my decision a little past 9 PM, and began taking action.
I retrieved a printout that I had left in my desk drawer, and took out my cellphone.
Looking at the printout, I dialled a number I’d never thought I would use in my life.
That night, I dreamt that I was talking with her, and I cried again.
I arrived at the designated café after noon.
Since I had arrived a little earlier than the appointed time, the other party had yet to show. I asked for an iced coffee and sat down on a vacant chair by the window.
I was able to come to the designated café without any hesitation. It was probably a coincidence, but it was the same place I had waited for her on that day, the day she died.
No, it might not have been a coincidence. I reconsidered while drinking my iced coffee. Surely, she must have been a regular here.
Just like on that day, I looked outside. Just like on that day, people holding onto different lives were passing by.
But unlike that day, the person I was supposed to meet properly arrived on time. I was glad. I was relieved. Besides the trauma from that time, I was also worried that I could have been stood up.
Wordlessly, Kyouko-san sat down on the chair at the other end, and at once glared at me with eyes that had become bright red.
“So I’ve come…… But………… What?”
I refused to be intimidated. Forcibly hardening my trembling heart, I met her gaze, and began opening my mouth.
However, I was cut off by Kyouko-san.
“Sakura’s funeral………… You…… Didn’t go.”
“…………”
“…………Why?”
“That’s…………”
Just as I found myself unable to answer, a loud sound reverberated throughout the store, and time within it stopped momentarily. It was the sound of Kyouko-san striking the table with her fist.
“…………Sorry……”
Just as time began moving inside the store, Kyouko-san lowered her eyes, and said so in a soft voice.
Once again, I opened my mouth to speak.
“Thank you for coming. This, must be the first time we’re properly speaking to each other.”
“…………”
“I have a matter to speak to you about, Kyouko-san, so I had you come here but, first, I wonder where I should start.”
“Just get to the point.”
“…………That’s right, sorry. I have something I want Kyouko-san to see.”
“…………”
Of course, the matter was about the girl. She alone was the only point of contact between me and Kyouko-san. After troubling over it yesterday, I had decided to speak with Kyouko-san.
Before I arrived, I had been thinking about how to broach the subject with Kyouko-san - whether to start with the relationship between me and the girl, or about the illness. In the end, I decided to simply let Kyouko-san see the truth first.
I took the ‘Disease Coexistence Journal’ out from my bag, and placed it on the table.
“This is, the ‘Disease Coexistence Journal’.”
“…………Disease coexistence?”
I removed the dust jacket wrapped around the book, and showed it to her.
Right away, Kyouko-san’s eyes, her eyes that were hollow somewhere, opened wide. I thought that it was to be expected of her. I thought that it was enviable too.
“…………That’s……Sakura’s handwriting.”
“It is.”
With a distinct movement, I nodded.
“This was her book. As part of her will, I received it.”
“……Her will…………”
The matter I was about to speak of made both my heart and words excruciatingly heavy. But, I couldn’t let that stop me.
“The things written inside, are all real. They are neither part of her mischief, nor mine. This is, something like a diary she had written, and in its last pages, is a will addressed to Kyouko-san and me, among others.”
“……What…………are you saying?”
“She, was ill.”
“…………You’re, lying, I’ve never heard of anything like that.”
“She didn’t tell you.”
“…………And just why would you know something that even I don’t?”
That was what I had thought too. But I knew the reason for that now.
“She didn’t tell anyone other than me. She, had gotten wrapped up in an incident and passed away, but even if she hadn’t met with an incident, the truth is––”
My words were cut off once more before I could finish. In their stead, a high-pitched sound pierced into my ear, and pain soon began to seep into my left cheek. Since I didn’t have any experience, it took a while for me to realise that the pain had come from the violent act of a slap.
With eyes that looked as if they were about to cry, Kyouko-san spoke like she were pleading.
“Just stop…………”
“I won’t stop. I have to tell Kyouko-san. She even wrote inside this book. That she treasured Kyouko-san the most. That’s why I want you to listen. She, was ill. Even if she hadn’t met with that incident, it had been determined that she would die after half a year. It’s not a lie.”
Kyouko-san weakly shook her head.
I held the ‘Disease Coexistence Journal’ out to Kyouko-san.
“Read it. That girl loved mischief, but, she absolutely wouldn’t make any jokes that would hurt you.”
Beyond that, I decided not to say anything more.
My worry that, just perhaps, she wouldn’t even read it, promptly dissolved when Kyouko-san reached her hand out after a short while.
Cautiously, Kyouko-san grabbed hold of the ‘Disease Coexistence Journal’ and opened its pages.
“It really is, Sakura’s handwriting……”
“This is genuinely, something that she wrote.”
Kyouko-san, with her eyebrows still knitted, began slowly reading from the very first page. I, focused on waiting.
I had heard from the girl that had died. Kyouko-san too wasn’t the type of person to ordinarily read words in a printed format. So it took some time for Kyouko-san to progress through the ‘Disease Coexistence Journal’. Of course, her speed of reading the book wasn’t the only factor influencing how much time was passing.
At first, with a look that said she couldn’t bring herself to believe it, Kyouko-san re-read the pages countless, countless times. “It’s a lie, it’s a lie,” she even recited. Following which, her heart probably connected with the girl’s somewhere. As if a switch had been flipped, she started to cry, and her speed of reading gradually grew even slower.
I didn’t start to feel impatient at all. Especially when Kyouko-san began to cry, I felt relieved that she had come to accept it. Because if she hadn’t accepted it, my being here today would have lost its meaning. Both conveying the girl’s will, as well as one other purpose.
Midway, I ordered my second glass of coffee. After some thought, I got a glass of orange juice for Kyouko-san too. Without saying anything, Kyouko-san drank just a sip.
While waiting, I didn’t think about the girl. Rather, I was thinking about what I could do with what I had received from her. It was a difficult task for me who had persisted with self-absorption till now. I continued thinking, and time passed right by.
By the time I realised it, the day was turning into night. In the end, I couldn’t think of anything concrete beyond what I had thought of yesterday. Things that people could normally do were difficult to me.
I looked at Kyouko-san; her face was sticky with tears and the pile of soggy tissues on the table had grown ever larger. Her fingers were sandwiched around right in the middle of the book, and she was about to close the book. I did the same thing the girl’s mom had done yesterday. “There’s, still more further ahead.”
Though Kyouko-san already looked like she was tired from crying, once she read the portion consisting of the girl’s will, this time she closed the book completely, and as if she weren’t aware of the other people around her, she started bawling loudly. I, watched over Kyouko-san. Just like the girl’s mom did for me yesterday, the entire time. Kyouko-san cried her name, countless, countless times. “Sakura, Sakura,” she continued to cry.
Kyouko-san continued to cry for even longer than I did yesterday, and when I looked at her, her eyes - still overflowing with tears - turned towards me. It was the same as always, a gaze like she couldn’t stand the very sight of me.
“…………Why…………”
Kyouko-san spoke with a voice that rattled in hoarseness.
“Why………… Didn’t she…… Tell me……”
“……That’s, because she-”
“It’s not Sakura! It’s you!”
Towards that angry voice that I hadn’t even anticipated, I lost the words I had wanted to respond with. With a gaze like she wanted to stab me to death, and had become all miry, Kyouko-san let loose her words.
“If she, if she had told me…… I would’ve spent so much………… So much, so much more time with her. I would’ve quit my club too, I would’ve even quit school! And be together, with Sakura……”
It was, about this, huh.
“…………I won’t forgive you. No matter how much Sakura liked you, treasured you, needed you - I, won’t forgive you.”
She, lowered her face again, and her tears began to fall onto the floor. Just a little, really just a little, I - the same me I was up till now - ended up thinking that even so, I wouldn’t mind. That even if I was hated, I wouldn’t mind. But I shook my head. No good. That’d be no good.
I began speaking to Kyouko-san, whose mind had been made up and whose head was hanging low.
“I’m sorry, but………… Even little by little is fine so, I’d like you to forgive me.”
Kyouko-san didn’t say anything. I pushed aside my nervousness, and somehow re-opened my mouth.
“And then………… If you don’t mind…… Someday…………………… I’d like-”
Kyouko-san, wasn’t looking at me.
“I’d like for you to be my friend.”
Because I used words that I had not once used in my life, both my throat and heart tensed up. I desperately worked to maintain my breathing. Because my own matters had left me desperate, I couldn’t afford to do something like make a guess at Kyouko-san’s mental state.
“…………”
“It’s not just because of her will. This is something I myself am choosing to do. I’d like to get along, with Kyouko-san. I want, us to get along.”
“…………”
“Is it, no good……”
I didn’t know any other means of asking beyond this. And so I turned quiet. Silence fell into the space between the two of us.
I had never been this nervous about someone’s answer before. With an extreme mental state in addition to such self-centeredness, I waited for a response from Kyouko-san, and after a while, still facing downwards, she shook her head several times, stood up for the first time in a few hours, and left without a glance in my direction.
Looking at Kyouko-san’s back, this time it was my turn to hang my head low.
So it was…… No good huh……
I thought that this was probably the price I had to pay. The price for not acknowledging people up till now.
“This is, difficult.”
I whispered so, alone. But I think I was actually saying it to that girl.
I placed the ‘Disease Coexistence Journal’ that had been left behind into my bag, and after clearing the mountain of trash the two of us had created, I once again headed outside where it had turned completely dark.
Just what should I do from now on? It felt like I had been trapped in a maze with no way out. If I were to look up, I could still see the sky. But even though I knew there was an exit, I couldn’t find it.
“What a troublesome problem,” I thought. Everyone who solved such problems on a daily basis was amazing.
I got on my bicycle, and starting riding home.
Summer vacation was about to end soon.
It seemed like it would be impossible to complete my homework before summer vacation came to an end.

Table Of Contents
The book is split into 11 chapters. We’ll start by exploring the psychology of decision making and how to measure conversion. Then we’ll build a user-centric sales funnel and address user concerns effectively. Finally, we’ll explore how to encourage users to act without alienating them.
1. Avoid the Dangers of Persuasion
+
Paul begins your journey with a rock-solid business case you can take to management or clients to avoid the more manipulative techniques you see online.
You will learn:
How online choice has empowered the consumer.
The hidden marketing agency costs of manipulation.
The dangers of buyers remorse.
2. Measure Conversion Effectively
+
You cannot improve what you are not measuring. That is why, in Paul’s second chapter, he explores how to measure your conversion rate effectively. Only then can you start to improve it.
You will learn:
The dangers of having no metrics or bad ones.
How to establish your key performance indicators.
What to track and how to track it.
3. Get to Know Your Users
+
If you want to persuade people to act, you need to understand how they think and what they want. To do that you need to carry out at least some user research. In this chapter, Paul introduces you to easy to use techniques that will get the job done with the minimum of investment.
You will learn:
What exactly you need to understand about your audience.
How to consolidate all you know about your users.
How to carry out lightweight user research.
4. Build a User-Centric Sales Funnel
+
The decision to act doesn’t take place in isolation and is part of the broader user journey. In this chapter, Paul explains how to understand that journey and build a sales funnel that supports the user’s experience, rather than seeking to interrupt it.
You will learn:
What a sales funnel is and how it helps.
How to map your customer’s journey.
How to build a sales funnel around the user’s journey.
5. Address Objections and Reduce Risks
+
This chapter explores one of the most important aspects of encouraging users to act — addressing their concerns. We’ll see how to identify user’s objections and then overcome them, so reducing the risk of taking action in the minds of users.
You will learn:
How to identify the concerns your audience has about taking action.
How to address common concerns.
A process for handling any objection users might have.
6. Establish Trust and Overcome Scepticism

People will not hand over money or personal information if they do not trust you. To make matters worse users have learned to be sceptical online. In this chapter, you will learn how to build a connection with your audience and help them learn to trust you.
You will learn:
Why trust is essential for improving conversion.
How to build trust through openness and empathy.
The role of social proof and connecting consumers in building trust.
7. Defeat Cognitive Overload
+
In this chapter, you will discover how to reach an audience that is distracted and time-poor. You will learn the importance of not making users think and learn valuable techniques for making acting with you an effortless experience.
You will learn:
What cognitive load is and why it is so dangerous for your conversion rate.
Methods for reducing the cognitive load of your websites.
Techniques for keeping any interface simple.
8. Overcoming the Problem With Perception
+
Are your users taking away the right message from your website? Do they understand what you offer or that it is relevant to them? It is easy to leave a website without acting because you had the wrong impression. This chapter shows you how to address this genuine danger.
You will learn:
How to position our products and services in a positive light.
The role that mental models play in conversion.
Techniques for ensuring your content reflects the user’s mindset.
9. Never Stop Testing and Iterating
+

You will learn:
Techniques for ensuring you are working on the right projects to improve conversion.
Ways to test how compelling a design concept is.
How to integrate testing into every aspect of your development cycle.
10. Address the Whole Experience
+
While marketers and UX designers have an enormous impact on conversion, they are only a part of the story. That is why in this chapter, we explore how to address the whole user experience and start encouraging colleagues to help improve the conversion rate too.
You will learn:
The role of your developer in improving your conversion rate.
How to use other digital channels to improve your website conversion rate.
How broader organisational changes can help boost revenue and online leads.
11. Where to Go From Here
+
With a book packed with advice, it can be overwhelming. The book concludes with some practical next steps that you can take, wherever you are on your journey to improve conversion.
You will learn:
Quick wins that can get you started today.
Budget testing techniques you can implement immediately.
A more ambitious and ongoing approach to optimisation.
“This is a great book on how to practically, and ethically, optimise website conversion rates. Before, I was roughly aware of what CRO was, but now I feel confident to start implementing these techniques in projects. As you would expect, Paul explains all of the concepts in an easy-to-follow and friendly manner.”
— Dave Smyth, Agency Owner
“I picked up a super simple testing idea, and saw a 42% lift in conversion rate. It was surprising to me, so I ran it again to significance with the same result. That equates to about 2.5 million USD/year in revenue at no additional cost. So I’d say I got my money’s worth!”
— Brandon Austin Kinney, Director of Lead Generation

Community Matters
With Click!, we’ve tried to create a very focused handbook with pragmatic solutions to help everyone create a better digital product that doesn’t get abandoned due to the sheer number of pop-ups, install prompt and newsletter box overlays.
There is quite a bit of work to do on the web, but our hope is that with this book, you will be equipped with enough techniques to increase conversion and the number of happy customers.
Producing a book takes quite a bit of time, and we couldn’t pull it off without the support of our wonderful community. A huge shout-out to Smashing Members for their ongoing support in our adventures. As a result, the eBook is and always will be free for Smashing Members. Plus, Members get a friendly discount when purchasing their printed copy.
Stay smashing, and thank you for your ongoing support, everyone!
