Homosassa
Tumblr media
Nestled in heavy forest between US 19 and the Gulf of Mexico is a magical area of Citrus County: Old Homosassa. Watered by several spring fed rivers, Citrus County residents enjoy the area's great natural beauty, small town charm and myriad of outdoor activities. Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins boiling vats and smokestack at the Yulee Sugar Mill State Park in Homosassa by Barrett Hardy. Homosassa is the home of the Yulee Sugar Mill State Park, Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park, Monkey Island, and Old Homosassa. A delightful fishing village, Homosassa has been considered a sports lover's paradise since the early 1900s. It was a destination for wealthy and prominent Americans such as Grover Cleveland, Thomas Edison, John Jacob Astor and Winslow Homer. General resorts, B & Bs and RV parks make Old Homosassa a fun and easy weekend getaway for NatureCoasters™. Not only are the land and sea beautiful and bountiful, but the people are also friendly and accomodating. There is great food, from pressed Cubans to fresh locally caught seafood, all-you-can-eat crab and Cajun delights at reasonable prices. Several talented artists reside here, creating and selling their wares in quaint "cracker" homes converted to gift shops,  studios and resort lobbies. Alicia Lowe is a local artist who crafts nature-based items for sale in Old Homosassa. Image by Diane Bedard Potters, glass artists, copper sculptors, painters, and carvers seem to be drawn to this natural area with its abundance of native flora and fauna. From the last part of June to the last partof September each year, you can go "scalloping" with a charter and hunt for these tasty morsels with a snorkel mask and a bag for your bounty. The healthy seagrass beds of this area provide a home to Bay Scallops, a simple, delectable, aquatic bivalve. (See our feature article on Scalloping here!) Jump in and get Scalloping NatureCoasters! You're gonna LOVE it! Image courtesy of Florida Fish and Wildlife. Fishing is plentiful on the Homosassa River, as are manatee sightings, kayaks,  pontoons, and airboat rides. Captain William Toney is a fourth-generation Homosassa fishing guide. He provides our weekly Homosassa Inshore Fishing Report. Image courtesy of Captain William Toney. Several big fishing tournaments are held in Homosassa throughout the year! There is often live music on the weekends at several Old Homsassa locations, including MacRae's Shed, the Florida Cracker Monkey Bar, and Crump's Landing. Sarasota Slim Band playing at The Shed on the Homosassa River. Image by Diane Bedard Oh, and did I forget to mention the Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park? For a small admission ($13) you will be treated to a boat ride down the river (canceled during COVID-19 precautions - check with the Park for current information), see manatees and a vortex of thousands of native Florida fish, bobcats, panthers, alligators, snakes, river otters and birds, birds, birds - including American Bald Eagles. The whole community seems to volunteer at the Wildlfie Park, which adds to the warm feeling I get every time I visit. You will too. Homosassa's community is a joy to visit, so plan to take a little trip off the beaten path of US 19 and enjoy this thriving enclave today. Read the full article

Rhubarb and Poetry
As rhubarb season is underway in my garden and many gardens in the Northern Hemisphere, I went in search of poems about rhubarb. I didn’t expect the homely vegetable would have so many poems extolling its virtues.
The source for most of the poems was a contest sponsored by The Merry Dairy, an ice cream shop in Ottawa, Ontario. For last year’s Be A Rhubarb Bard Poetry Contest, over 80 poems were submitted. If you’ve a fondness for rhubarb and/or poetry, you can read them all at The Merry Dairy. I’ve culled my favorites and included below. (They are without the poets’ names on the website).
And BTW, at this time of year, you’ll likely find Roasted Rhubarb and Strawberry-Rhubarb ice cream among the offerings at The Merry Dairy.
Early Riser Rhubarb, the first to rise this droughtful spring, struggles up through drowsing ground weeks before annuals even learn their names. Driven out of formal gardens, its red periscopes live rough in lanes, spread to vacant lots, occupy sketchy alleys. Rhubarb’s a thriver, her scalloped skirts flap wider than a road, surpass neighbour weeds. Desperate to be noticed, she pays her way in leafage. The odd gardener relents, chews and spits a stalk or two, chops and cubes, sugars sauce. There are never any takers. Rhubarb the Artefact, housed in Gem jars, waits in cellars, labels pasted on in a ghost aunt’s hand, the day, the month, the year of preservation.
A few rhubarb haiku Spring’s first offering Stocky, leafy, red and green Tart, delicious treat! Paper cups of sugar Ragged red stalks, sweet and tart Laughter of children Oh, ruby stalks! Under-appreciated; tart. Rhubarb: heart of spring.
Grandmother rhubarb Spreads ruby arms to hug clouds While the worms cuddle dirt.
A final thought on rhubarb I loved rhubarb, that hardy, underappreciated garden survivor that leafed out just as the worst of winter melted away. Not everyone was a fan, especially of the bitter, mushy, overcooked version. Yet sometimes a little bitterness could bring out the best in other flavors. Bitter rhubarb made sunny-day strawberry face the realities of life—and taste all the better for it. Judith Fertig

Any ship you want
Thank you anon!
Hmm I'm not really sure what to write about,, I remember being asked a while ago about SB ships and I did gave my answer but I don't really agree with it anymore plus I feel like I worded it wrong. I guess I'm breaking the rules for it not being a headcanon tho if you're okay with that.
I am avoiding finishing my essay for this so I better make it good.
One thing interesting about the SB fandom was watching the rise and fall of ships. I remember when Spandy was number 1 and right behind was Patbob. Now Squidbob is number 1 with Spandy being almost a dying ship. Patbob has been gaining traction recently but I haven't seen nearly as much compared to Squidbob. It's fun seeing it rise up tho.
I've said before I never really had a strong spongebob ship like if one was suggested to me I'm usually like "oh that sounds cool 👀" but never really following anything. I usually headcanon SB as aroace for as loooong as I can remember and this is excluding anything writers or Hillenburg said.
But also there is the fact that SB is a very shippable character and I can see why Squidbob especially has a large following. Like it's literally in the source material when you think about it. Stephen wanted Spongebob to be like an undersea Jerry Lewis and took ideas from Stan Laurel in particular.
Both of them in comedic duos that essentially had the grumpy straight man and goofy manchild character (Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin, Stanley Laurel and Oliver Hardy) which is what Spongebob and Squidward's sort of dynamic is.
I can't speak on how Jerry Lewis' character was like cuz I hate the actor who plays him but I might eventually see it for spongebob reference later on but I have watched some Laurel and Hardy stuff for spongebob reference.
Aaaand well, they did stuff- like ditching their wives to hang out with each other, marrying basically the genderbent versions of themselves and occasionally sleeping together, having the dynamic of an old married couple, there was one movie like the episode rockabye bivalve except instead of a scallop they raise an orphaned child together? Imagine if rockabye bivalve was spongebob and Squidward instead of spongebob and Patrick. That's the energy.
I've heard people shipping Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis together (the characters not the literal actors) because of their dynamic but I have to wait and see to compare it to Squidbob.
So like even outside of the show hints that some of the Squidbob stuff could be intentional and not just gags👀
The episode pizza delivery was actually one of the oldest spongebob concepts to become an episode. Really it's said to be the first episode to be written which sets up Spongebob and Squidward's dynamic perfectly. And we know for sure it was probably the first episode to be written because he wears his work hat through the entire episode which was actually somethinf planned for the show that spongebob would love his job so much that he'd never take off his hat.
I'm getting off topic but it's an idea from the very beginning of the series that there is something more to them and the episode that was first written is literally about them both and their struggle to deliver a pizza and the really nice part of squidward to show that he does care for sponge and sponge loves hanging out and doing things with him.
As for other spongebob ships, I like SandyxKaren and planktonxmr. Krabs. But I also like karenxplankton?? Like I just want karen to be happyy and those little bits of hope when plankton is romantic towards her is nice because it makes her happy. But then plankton ruins it with obsessing over the formula and her and sandy really have something going. She's really happy whenever sandy is around which is so pleasing?? I just want her to be happy. And sandy does a better job at keeping Karen happy. So sorry plank, Squirrel took yo girl.
As for krabsxplankton. There's just a lot to dig around with that ship. First of all enemies to lovers. Second they got good chemistry and episodes where they show their softer side and bond are too cute.
Also while Squidbob is the biggest ship, I like the idea of Squilliamxsquidward. I just want a sad past fic of where Squidward's rivalry is also paired with attraction to Squilliam and he gets his heart broken by him. Man I miss Squilliam in the show. Where did he go? I haven't seen his character in so long. Him and Squilliam better have something going😩

Finding Home Gavin Reed x Reader
Chapter 11
Masterlist
The week went by slowly. I met up with my dad and Connor for dinner a couple times, but I mainly sat in my office grinding out my lesson plans. Nines stopped visiting during lunch and I hadn’t heard from Gavin either. Connor had messaged me a few times to ask to hang out and I felt bad blowing him off, but I just wasn’t in the mood.
I was sitting at my desk with my feet up scrolling through social media. It was Friday and I’d been killing myself getting everything done for my class. I still had a week left before class started and I desperately needed the distraction. My work phone started ringing.
“Hello, this is Dr. (L/n). How can I help you?”
“Hello, (Y/n). This is Nines.”
“Oh! Hi Nines, what can I do for you?”
“I was wondering if you had plans for dinner tonight. I haven’t been able to get away for lunch, but I wanted to continue our conversations.”
“Sure, where should I meet you?”
“Wine & Bread, in about an hour?”
“Sounds good. See you then.” I hung up the phone. I looked up the menu. This place looked fairly fancy. Had Nines asked me on a date? I sighed and closed the menu. I leaned my head back and decided to text Tina.
 How’s work been?
Ask what you really wanna ask (Y/n) lol
I think Nines just asked me out and I’m very confused lol
Eh, he probably just didn’t understand the context. I wouldn’t worry about it.
Oh hey! Before I forget I have something important to ask you…
 Oh no I’m nervous, Tina
Well, I told you before you moved back that me and Valerie are getting married in October…I was hoping you’d be my maid of honor…I know it’s a little close to the wedding to ask, but I wanted to make sure you were moving back for real before asking.
Tina! Of course! I’m so touched you’d even ask me! You’re gonna make me cry!
Yay!!! Are you busy on Sunday??? I was gonna go try on suits by myself, but it’ll be more fun if you came!!
I’d love to! Text me the deets and I’ll be there!
Wait! Tina! What do I do about tonight?!?!
Go and have fun! Nines and Connor both get paid and don’t have to eat so take advantage of the free expensive food!
Wow, you should quit being a police officer and become a philosopher
Hardy har har, (Y/n). I’ve got to run, but I’ll see you Sunday! (Text me what happens tonight!)
See ya! (Depends on how horrible it goes!)
I smiled and stood up and stretched. There was still a decent chunk of time before I would need to leave for the restaurant. I decided to move some of my decorations around, mainly focusing on the mess that was my bookshelf. I had made the decision to hang up my degrees on the wall across from the door, so it would be the first thing people would see. It made me feel a bit like an asshole, but after what happened at the precinct, I wanted to prove to anyone who walked into my office that I did know what I was talking about.
Again, my office phone went off.
“Hello, this is Dr. (L/n).” I answered, sitting on my desk instead of my chair.
“Well, Dr. (L/n), tell me why I had to learn from someone else that you had moved back to Detroit.” I laughed.
“Hello to you too, Elijah! I’ve been busy trying to get my class ready. I was going to reach out eventually.”
“For your research, of course.” He said with a chuckle.
“Oh, come on, don’t be like that! Obviously, I was going to take advantage of the fact you have your own pool!” I giggled.
“Hmm of course. Are you busy tonight? I was wondering if we could catch up.”
“I am, sorry. I have a…” What do I even call what was going to happen tonight? “meeting tonight with one of dad’s colleagues. Are you busy tomorrow?”
“Tomorrow, works. Come by around 1? I can send you my address.”
“That sounds great, see you then Elijah!” I hung up the phone and laughed to myself. Elijah had always been a huge flirt. We had met while I was in grad school, I had been too tenacious in trying to find information for my research thesis at Cyberlife. I had caught his attention, apparently in more ways than one, as I had turned him down a couple times, citing the ethical restrictions on our relationship because of my research. But I wasn’t in grad school anmore. Smiling, I finished working on my office and headed to the restaurant.
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.” I heard as the hostess led me to a table. Instead of Nines waiting on me, it was Gavin. The hostess looked back at me and I gave her a shaky smile as I sat across from him.
“Where’s Nines?” I asked him, looking around, not wanting to cause a scene.
“I could ask you the same thing, pipsqueak. I’m going to call him.” Gavin grumbled. I nodded. I looked down at the menu, realizing we probably weren’t going to eat here. I dug through my bag looking for a ten-dollar bill I could give the waitress for taking one of her tables. “Nines what did you do?” I couldn’t hear Nines through the phone, but Gavin looked pissed. “I have not been moping! Whatever, don’t do this again.” He hung up and sighed. “Him and Connor planned this. Said they were both sick of us moping around.” He pitched his voice up, mocking his android partner, and air quoting ‘moping around.’
“What! I haven’t been moping!” Connor didn’t seem like the meddling type, and he knows I’m still pissed at Gavin.
“Yeah, neither have I.” I sighed, setting the money on the table and getting up. “Sorry for wasting both of our time.”
“Wait! I mean…” He looked down at his empty place setting. “We’re already here and I’m starving.” He glanced up at me. I nodded curtly and sat back down. He picked up the money and handed it back to me. I took it back and put it in my purse. If I wanted to get through this night in one piece, I knew I was going to have to swallow my pride and apologize to Gavin first.
“Hey, Detective Reed…I’m sorry for last week. I shouldn’t have yelled at you like that.”
“What happened to ‘Gavin,’ pipsqueak?” He asked with a smirk.
“I…I just figured you were angry with me still so being more formal would be better.” I started flipping through the menu, noting how expensive everything seemed to be. “Wow, this place is so fancy. Why were you meeting Nines here?”
“He told me one of our suspects was going to be here and it would be easier to listen in on them in the restaurant instead of outside with mics. How did he trick you, miss professor?”
“He told me he wanted to have another conversation about sociology.” Gavin laughed loudly.
“And you didn’t think anything strange about meeting an android at a restaurant?” My face immediately felt like it was on fire.
“Look, it’s been a long week. I just figured…” I started laughing, which seemed to startle Gavin. “I don’t know what I was thinking! I even told Tina how weird it seemed. Oh my god, I can’t believe I thought he’d asked me on a date.”
Before Gavin could comment, the waitress returned with a bottle of prosecco.
"Here’s the bottle requested when you made your reservation, sir.” She informed Gavin, neither of us bothered to correct her while she poured each of us a glass and then nestled the bottle into the ice bucket on the side of the table. We gave her our orders, I wanted the pan seared scallops and asparagus, Gavin was a little more simple - a ribeye steak medium rare with garlic rosemary mashed potatoes.
“Wait, did you want to go on a date with the Tin Can?” Gavin raised his eyebrows as he took a drink of the prosecco and made a sour face.
“No, I was just really confused! I haven’t seen him in like a week.”
“Yes, you have. He’s been going to your office like every day.”
“Ah no, he hasn’t. I think I would know if he had been in my office.” Gavin covered his face with his hands and groaned, before he dragged them down he rested his elbows on the table, staring down at his hands as he brought them together.
“Him and Connor must have been planning this for a while.” An awkward silence fell over both of us.
“Is the prosecco good?” I took a sip and immediately started coughing. Gavin started laughing.
“It’s shit.” He waved over the waitress. “Can we get a couple glasses of Jameson on the rocks?” She nodded and walked away. Gavin sighed and looked away from me, he ran his hand through his hair nervously. “Hey, I also owe you an apology for being all pissy in that meeting.” I shrugged my shoulders.
“I would’ve gone with ‘asshole,’ but pissy works too.” We both chuckle.
“Your laugh is cute.” Gavin said softly, making me blush and look down nervously. The waitress dropped off the two glasses of Jameson and our food. “Well, here’s to nosey androids.” He held up his glass.
“To nosey androids.” I raised my glass with him.
Dinner went surprisingly well, Gavin could be funny when he wasn’t making fun of androids. He also insisted on paying for dinner and driving me home. We started walking to his car which was parked a block away. He lit a cigarette while we were walking.
“You know, smoking kills.” I said bumping my shoulder into his arm.
“Did you get your PhD just so you could tell badass detectives what they should and shouldn’t do?” He joked, but he flicked the cigarette away.
“My dad didn’t tell you? That’s literally the only reason. I’m just here to order you all around.” He stared straight faced at me for a moment, before he loosed a loud 'Ha!' his eyes crinkling around a toothy grin that lit up his whole face. He looked really handsome when he wasn’t scowling or being rude. “Hey, I had fun tonight. Even if it was a trap.”
“Yeah I had fun too, pipsqueak.” We both got in his jeep. He started the car but stayed parked.
“Oh! Here’s my address, I forgot you haven’t been there, yet.”
“Do you want to come over and see the cats again?” I smiled and looked at my phone, it was getting pretty late.
“I’d love to, but I have plans tomorrow and I have some work I need to get done beforehand.” He nodded and started backing up.
“What are you doing tomorrow that’s more important than hanging out with the best detective in Detroit and his three awesome cats?” I laughed as he drove.
“First off, I’m pretty sure Connor could give you a run for your money. One of my contacts from my grad school research lives just outside Detroit and he invited me over to catch up. He would flirt with me more than he’d give me actual information I could use. He’s ridiculous.” I said while laughing. Gavin’s lips were in a tight line.
“Who is it? Or is that like some ethics thing?”
“He’s not active in my research anymore, so I think it’s fine to talk about it. It’s Elijah Kamski, the old CEO of Cyberlife.” I looked over at Gavin with a smile, which quickly faded. Just like last Friday, he was clenching his jaw and he was gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles were turning white.
“That’s crazy.” He said through his teeth. Fuck, this is just like back in my office. He does have some kind of problem with either Cyberlife or Eli.
“Yeah…I never took him seriously. Eli’s…ridiculous.”
“Eli.”
“Yeah, that’s his name Elijah Kamski. Eli is short for Elijah.” I said jokingly. Gavin didn’t respond. I kept glancing at him and back at the road. We were only a few minutes away from my apartment, if I didn’t fix this soon, it would be another bad interaction between us. I wanted to fix this because I wanted to stay friends with Nines and Tina thinks there could be something between us. Gavin looked really handsome tonight and was actually pretty nice up until now. “Gavin, I- “
“You should take him up on it. You two probably have a lot in common. Both of you just love androids.” He snapped, pulling into the parking lot.
“I don’t like him like that.” I said softly as he pulled into a spot. “Gavin, I don’t know what I keep doing wrong and I’m going to keep making the same mistakes if you don’t talk to me.”
“Why don’t you ask Eli in between him trying to impress you?” He glared at me.
“Fine Gavin. Maybe I will.” I stepped out of his car. “Gavin, I had fun tonight, before this mess. I wish you weren’t holding something that I don’t even understand against me. Yeah, I think androids deserve equal rights, but you keep acting like you like me and I think I like you too.” I took a deep breath. “But I can’t be with someone who won’t talk to me and won’t tell me what’s going on. So, I guess if you ever get over whatever this is, you know where to find me.” I slammed the car door and hurried towards the lobby, willing myself to not cry until I was in my apartment.
It was a trick. Nines and Connor set me and Gavin up. Wasn’t good. I’ll see you Sunday.
I texted Tina on the way up to my apartment. I fumbled with my keys for a moment, before pushing the door open, kicking it shut with my foot and immediately plopping onto the couch. I absentmindedly brought my hand to mouth and bit my nails and worried at the skin around them, an anxious tic, while I tried to think up a firm but appreciative text to send to Connor.
Connor, I appreciate you trying to help Gavin with me. It’s not going to work, and I really need you and Nines to stop pushing us together. I’m not mad I promise, but tonight didn’t end well.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm down. I looked back at my phone and bit my lip. I wanted to call someone, anyone to talk to. Tina was probably busy, and Connor wouldn’t really understand. I also didn’t want my dad to get mad at Connor or Gavin. I leaned back on my couch but sat back up as my phone vibrated. For a second, my heart believed it may be Gavin explaining or apologizing, but it was just Connor.
I’m sorry. It won’t happen again. Do you want to come over?
Maybe some other time. I think I’m just going to go to bed.
I stood up and walked to my bedroom. Throwing my phone onto my pillow I got ready to take a shower. Today just needed to be over.

Do you use a trellis in gardening at all? If so what materials do you use to build one?
I use multiple types of trellises in my own garden. I live in a very sunny, very hot environment that’s very windy (so I can’t use shade cloth) so I have a trellis wall for peas and climbing beans that’s made with 8 foot tall 4x4s (dug down two feet) and 10 foot long dowels. I bought 6000 feet of gardening twine off ebay and I made a trellis that runs up and down every 4 inches along the whole length, with the bottom being 2.5 feet away from the bottom of the posts. So from the side it looks like a triangle. The angle these trellises are set up means that morning sun enters beneath the trellis, then as the sun goes about its day and sets, the beans and peas provide shade for the broccoli, cauliflower, and bok choy I grow beneath them. Because there is so much sun and heat where I live, without the shade, the brassica veggies flower too soon, so the shade helps keep them from doing so as quickly. Beans and peas climb these in the spring and early summer when it’s still marginally cool (only in the 70s-80s during the high). When the peas and beans begin producing, I can begin harvesting- underneath there are 3 little walkways between plants where I can get to the plants. In addition, the two trellises are parallel to each other. On the trellis towards the east I have peas and on the trellis towards the west I have beans. Beans take the sun better in my experience than do peas here, so the bean trellis provides a little bit of shade from about 4 oclock on for the peas.  I also use more traditional vertical trellises (can be bought at like home depot - made of 1/2 to 3/4 inch metal) for tomatillos and decorative tiny pumpkins. The weight of these fruits means they need something stronger to support the plant than just string. I use gardening twine to train vines/branches to the trellis. I also have never tried it but some summer squashes (scallop, desi, lemon, cucumber) are small enough they might be good to try on a metal trellis. Additionally, Jenny melons (or any melon under 2 pounds) can be trellises as long as you support the melon, usually with a sling of some sort. For tomatoes, I have t-posts I put at the ends of all rows and I run gardening twine back and forth between the posts, raising up about 6 inches every time. I use this rather than traditional tomato cages because I can get more tomato plants in a row AND more rows in a bed. I plant my tomatoes every 12 inches on drip tape and do three rows together between paths (the middle row is offset 6 inches from the first and third rows). This string method allows you to almost espalier the tomatoes as well as encourage vertical growth (by weaving them between the strings) rather than bushy growth. This makes it easier to harvest tomatoes as well because they’re easier to see.  I plan to put in hardy kiwis this fall and those will be trellised up a fence. My dad has three table grape vines on a trellis but we kind of let those go wild and the trellis is really too tall. It’s based on an umbrella pruning system but we don’t do that.  Does that answer you question?
