Hardoutkiwi - a passion for fashion and Maori art

Hardout Kiwi Fashion is 100% owned and operated by kiwi husband and wife team Simon & Judy.

When I was a child, I saw my parents using manual sewing machines to make embroideries for bed covers and pillowcases, it was absolutely fascinating. Back then, the handcrafted and manual sewing machine embroidery products were actually luxury items, they were sold as wedding gifts or for some special event.

My dad was a brilliant artist, from Chinese calligraphy, scenic drawing to traditional patterns, he was able to transform them from paper to fabric.

The business was a great success until the computerized embroidery machine was introduced in the early 90’s.

16 years ago, I asked myself, what would I do if I didn't have to work for money.

My answer was to be a fashion designer. I believed that my passion for fashion and traditional cultural art will help me fulfil my dream and is also the path that my parents led me to.

In the last few years, I have been working and collaborating with Māori designers and artists.

Here are a few of our designs to share with you

Studio IV: ‘WHY’ did we interview her? Did we respect her boundaries?

(She says; “my silence is golden”).

Little something about her:

[She had described herself as a very complicated girl. She is studying Bachelor of Architectural (BAS)  at Auckland University and she finds it to be very deceptive. In other words, she finds it illusive. She enjoys what she does because she feels as if she is able to model a structure with detailed interior and exterior with very deep explanation. She is from a fine arts background, but her interest was more towards architectural because she had been to a construction site earlier, 2-3 years back and she received ‘hardout textures’_she says; from the sounds of hammering and other loud sounds. She’s not able to explain her colour palettes because it isn’t weird or crazy for her. Her colours are mostly mixed around either if the colours are pretty or not but if she hears ugly sounds or tastes something disgusting, she would experience the brightest pink with the lightest green.] – This condition makes her a very intelligent and a creative person. It helps her work around her projects or in her everyday life very smoothly. She is experiencing Chromesthesia. This is also known as sound-to-colour synaesthesia. Thus, how she models her sounds with colours.

Most will cringe, most will be curious, and most will not care. I cared because I want to reveal her consciousness. This project holds an interesting point because this is simply developed from the idea of us humans experiencing 5 main senses to transforming the idea into a digital/electronic format for the focused curiosity and for visual satisfaction for personal educational complex. This is beneficial in tuition towards mental, physical and emotional, human behaviours in general.
