i got to paint using ground cochineal insects today!

i meant to get a picture of the paints, but those four cups had lemon juice, water, baking soda, and borax added, respectively. the different pHs change the color of the cochineal powder from reddish-orange (acidic pH) to crimson (neutral pH) to beet-pink and deep purple (basic pH)

Ann Marie Brown Fudge (born April 23, 1951) in DC to Malcolm R. Brown, an administrator at the US Postal Service, and Bettye Lewis Brown, a manager at the National Security Agency.

She married Richard Fudge, Sr. (1971) an educational and training consultant. They have two sons. She received a BA in Retail Management from Simmons College and earned her MBA from Harvard University Business School.

She was the workforce specialist with the General Electric Company. he worked with General Mills Corporation in several leadership positions including marketing assistant, assistant product manager, product manager, and marketing director. She joined Kraft General Foods where she was associate director of strategic planning. She became vice president for marketing and development in the Dinners and Enhancers division at Kraft. She received the Black Achievers Award from the Harlem YMCA.

She was named by Kraft Foods president of the Maxwell House Coffee division, she became the first African American woman to head a corporate division. She was named by Fortune magazine as 30th on the 50 Most Influential Women in American Business. Adelphi University, Howard University, Marymount College, and Simmons College all awarded her an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

She was the chairman and CEO of Young and Rubicam Advertising in New York City. She became a member of the Board of Trustees at Morehouse College, as well as a Trustee with the Rockefeller Foundation.

She was a member of the Barack Obama presidential campaign’s finance committee and was named by President Obama to the 18-member National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform.

She joined the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. She served on the boards of directors of General Electric, Novartis, and Unilever. She served as chair of the US Programs Advisory Board of The Gates Foundation and as vice-chair of the Harvard Board of Overseers. She was installed in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She serves on the Advisory Board of the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture in the District of Columbia. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

MIT SHASS announces appointment of new heads for 2024-25

The MIT School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (SHASS) has announced several changes to the leadership of its academic units for the 2024-25 academic year.

“I’m confident these outstanding members of the SHASS community will provide exceptional leadership. I’m excited to see each implement their vision for the future of their unit,” says Agustin Rayo, the Kenan Sahin Dean of MIT SHASS.

Christine Walley will serve as head of the Anthropology Section. Walley is the SHASS Dean’s Distinguished Professor of Anthropology. She received a PhD in anthropology from New York University in 1999. Her first ethnography, “Rough Waters: Nature and Development in an East African Marine Park,” explored environmental conflict in rural Tanzania.

Seth Mnookin will serve as head of the Comparative Media Studies Program/Writing. Mnookin is a longtime journalist and science writer and was a 2019-20 Guggenheim Fellow. He graduated from Harvard College in 1994 with a degree in history and science, and was a 2004 Joan Shorenstein Fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. Mnookin will continue in his role as director of the Graduate Program in Science Writing.

Kieran Setiya will serve as head of the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy. Setiya is a professor of philosophy and is head of the philosophy section. He works mainly in ethics, epistemology, and the philosophy of mind. He received his PhD in philosophy from Princeton University in 2002.

In the Literature Section, associate professors Sandy Alexendre and Stephanie Frampton will serve as co-heads. Alexandre’s research spans the late 19th century to present-day Black American literature and culture. She received a PhD in English language and literature from the University of Virginia in 2006. Frampton is also co-chair of the Program in Ancient and Medieval Studies. She received a PhD from Harvard University in comparative literature in 2011.

Jay Scheib will serve as head of the Music and Theater Arts Section. Scheib is Class of 1949 Professor of Music and Theater Arts. He received an MFA in theater directing from the Columbia University School of the Arts. He is a recipient of the MIT Edgerton Award, the Richard Sherwood Award, a National Endowment for the Arts/TCG fellowship, an OBIE Award for Best Direction, and the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship.

In the Program in Science, Technology, and Society, Kate Brown will serve as head. Brown is the Thomas M. Siebel Distinguished Professor in History of Science. Her research interests illuminate the point where history, science, technology and bio-politics converge to create large-scale disasters and modernist wastelands. Brown will publish “Tiny Gardens Everywhere: A Kaleidoscopic History of the Food Sovereignty Frontier” in 2025 with W.W. Norton & Co. Brown has held fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Carnegie Foundation, the European University Institute, The Kennan Institute, Harvard’s Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies, and the U.S. Holocaust Museum. She ​​received her PhD in history from the University of Washington at Seattle.

In the Program in Women’s and Gender Studies, Sana Aiyar will serve as interim head. Aiyar is an associate professor of history, and is a historian of modern South Asia. She received her PhD from Harvard University in 2009 and held an Andrew Mellon postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in 2009-10.

Charles Harris Wesley (December 2, 1891 – August 16, 1987) was a historian, educator, minister, and author. He published more than 15 books on African-American history and political science, taught for decades at Howard University, served as president of Wilberforce University, and founding president of Central State University. He was born in Louisville, the only child of Matilda and Charles Snowden Wesley. He graduated from Fisk University. He earned a MA from Yale University. He became the fourth African American to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard University. He became an ordained minister of the AME church. He served as the Dean of the Liberal Arts and the Graduate School at Howard University. He won a Guggenheim Fellowship that enabled him to travel to London, where he was present with Harold Moody at the founding of the League of Coloured Peoples he was inspired in part by the NAACP, of which he was a member. He became the Director of Research and Publications for the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. He was Executive Director, becoming Executive Director Emeritus'. He became Director of the Afro-American Historical and Cultural Museum in Philadelphia. He was a life member of the American Historical Association. He was active in African-American fraternal organizations, both during and after college. He was elected as the 14th and a five-term General President, and National Historian for seven decades of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He wrote The History of Alpha Phi Alpha, updating its many new editions. He was an archon of Sigma Pi Phi. He was a Prince Hall Freemason, a Sovereign Grand Inspector General (33rd Degree) of the United Supreme Council, and a member of the Odd Fellows, Elks, and many other fraternal organizations. What team spirit do you think Massachusetts would have?

Massachusetts’s State Spirit is cranberry in color and it takes the form of an American Revolutionary War soldier. It’s an adult in body, but only about a little more than half in size. It just floats along behind him. [#C41E3A] (credit to @not-the-apple-pie-please for the form idea)

Its form is a metaphor for how Massachusetts’s colonial history is still a major part of the state’s culture, especially with the Revolutionary War and the events leading up to it. 

The soldier’s appearance is smoky and wispy so you can't make out too many details. However, the silhouette and layers of the uniform and the tricorn hat as well as things like the crossed sash in front can still be seen. The soldier has two blank glowing eyes of a lighter shade.

The soldier doesn’t really react or respond to anything and tends to just loom behind Mass and stare at him. Mass has tried talking to it before, but now just tries ignoring it the best he can.

When his emotions become more intensely negative, Massachusetts's Spirit grows larger and monster-like in appearance.

The only time when the soldier will divert its attention from Mass is when he's wary or angry at something, in which case its attention will be focused on whatever is making him wary or angry.

Mass is one of the few states that can see Team Spirit. However, he doesn’t really give it any sort of special attention since he just sees it as another part of someone’s appearance.

I have his fake human name as Matthew Allen. MA are his initials.

Matt is very close to Mass as a name, and it fits Massachusetts as a biblical name. 

Allen is Celtic in origin and can mean “little rock,” “harmony,” or even “handsome.”

Massachusetts popped into existence between 1620 and 1630, from when the pilgrims landed in Plymouth to the establishment of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

While Connecticut and Massachusetts both had witch trials, Massachusetts was actually a victim of the Salem witch trials.

Mass also has a beefy PC setup, though not to the extent of California’s. However, Mass will sweet-talk California into buying him expensive and powerful parts, and it usually works.

In canon, he’s good at hacking due to MIT, seeing as he was confident enough in his skills to hack into a government database. Mass is additionally very knowledgeable about computer science and electrical engineering. He’s one of the better, though more unwilling, sources of free tech support for the house.

Mass is pretty intelligent due to Harvard and can be very persuasive with his silver tongue if he really wants something out of someone.

He really only does this if he wants to be subtle about it, since he already has a reputation as a brusque and grumpy person who has a penchant for fighting rather than talking.

The former colonies know how manipulative Mass can really get since they’ve been around each other for centuries.

When some of his fellow northeast states criticize how shady Mass can be, he frequently deflects by saying that Cambridge and Harvard are wayyy worse than him.

Mass can say the name of Lake Char­gogg­a­gogg­man­chaugg­a­gogg­chau­bun­a­gung­a­maugg (AKA Webster Lake) and has never said it wrong before. Sometimes he’ll just randomly throw it into conversation when he wants to be annoying.

He’s already donated most of his belongings from the Revolutionary War to museums, but one specific trophy he kept is a saber that he captured off a British officer during the Battle of Bunker Hill.
