Loving Hands
Tumblr media
The youngest daughter of King Viserys falls seriously ill. Perhaps the loving hand of the Commander can do so much to help.
genre: a bit of angst, mostly fluff. mention of minor character death.
a/n: this was inspired by my mum who took care of me recently. I was very ill with a migraine, cramps and an uneasy stomach and she stayed by my side through it all. Made me think how ser harwin would take care of his lover! Enjoy!
word count: 4K
A violent cough escaped your lips before you could bring up your handkerchief to your mouth, it felt as if your chest was rattling shaking your whole entire body from the inside.
What once started out as a small cough and a simple cold had turned into something dreadfully worse but being as stubborn as you were, you never wanted to admit it.
However, you began to feel weaker as the days drew on, your body sore as if you had gone horse riding for days on end, skin cold even as the sun beat down upon you.
‘Are you well my lady?’
The gentle, but deep rumbling voice of your personal guard, Ser Harwin Strong, caught your attention as your cough finally eased. You waved him away with a small smile.
‘I’m fine, Commander. Just a little cough is all, it will pass,’ You barely gasped out, trying to keep your voice as steady as possible.
He came to your side, a shiver running down your spine as his eyes roamed your face. ‘I’ve heard and seen much sickness princess. If I may speak plainly, that does not sound like a normal cough.’
You scoffed but with a chuckle.
Taking a brief look around for any stragglers that wondered the gardens, you clasped the Commander’s gloved hand into yours, squeezing it as you gave him your best smile.
‘I’m perfectly alright Harwin, I promise.’
In the past few months, you and the heir to Harrenhal had become incredibly close. From childhood friends to something you couldn’t really put your finger on.
His embrace was where you felt safest in the privacy of his chambers, his hands holding you as if you were made of glass, your own mapping out the scars that decorated his skin, memories left behind of the battles he had fought.
Your titles would be forgotten and conversation would flow freely. Sometimes a kiss or two was shared but nothing more. And yet, you knew it was most definitely more than friends.
He sighed heavily before smiling down you, letting his knuckles caress your cheek, ‘I only worry for you princess. That is all.’
‘But, I think I may call for the Maester once I have a nap. I’m feeling rather tired suddenly.’
‘As you wish my lady.’
His arm was out for you before you could ready yourself to stand up, gripping his forearm as you stood to your feet, his hand settling briefly on the small of your back to make sure you were steady before letting you go ahead.
But as you made your way back towards the Red Keep, you knew something was amiss. You felt light, your sight fogged as if tears glazed your eyes. You let your head fall back and looked up through your lashes, the sky a smear of blues and clouds like a child’s painting.
And then your world began to spin.
‘H-Harwin?’
You were unconscious before your legs gave way, too far gone to feel a pair of arms wrap around you as you crumpled to the ground.
Tumblr media
Even in his condition, Viserys was fast as he limped down the corridor, Rhaenyra running ahead as the guards hurried to catch up to them.
They burst through the doors of your room, coming upon the sight of the maids bustling around the bed, a Maester standing over you as you lay in bed.
‘Y/N?!’
Rhaenyra rushed to your side, ignoring the cries of the maids and Maester to stay away as she sat close to your side. The breath left her as she took in the sight of you.
Your skin had paled from its beautiful glow to a dull grey, sweat glistening across your skin. The soft wheeze that left your lips every so often caught her attention, watching the low rise and fall of your chest. Even your hair had darkened from a beautiful white to ash.
She gripped your hand in hers, pressing a kiss to it as Viserys hobbled to your bedside, a cloth held up to his mouth. ‘What is the matter with my daughter? I want an answer now!’
‘The Princess is down with influenza my King.’ The Maester was brave enough to speak up, coming to his side. Viserys looked at him in horror.
‘How did this happen? She was perfectly healthy this morning at breakfast!’
The old man sighed. ‘Unfortunately, it is a wicked sickness that can turn fatal very quickly if not treated properly.’
‘Is there anything we can do for her now?’ Rhaenrya, who had been quietly listening to the Maester, asked, unable to tear her eyes away from her sister.
‘I have given her the necessary medicines needed to treat such a sickness your Highness. For now we watch and pray that she makes it through the night, only then will we be able to tell how severe this really is.’
She nodded before Viserys looked around the room. ‘Who found Y/N? She was in the gardens this morning when I last saw her.’
‘She was your Majesty. The Commander was the one who was with her. He who brought her here and took care of her before I arrived.’
It was only then that the King and Rhaenyra finally caught sight of the man in the corner of the room, stock still as a statue, his eyes trained on the young woman now lying in bed barely moving.
For how big he was, Harwin had moved like lighting through the Red Keep after you had collapsed, carrying your limp body in his arms and ignoring those who whispered and gasped.
Had barked orders at the maids who had been moving about your room, ordering for the Maester and for the King and Princess be notified of your current state.
He had immediately moved you to the bed, and with caution to thrown to the wind, removed the thick layers of your dress to leave you in your shift. Only when the Maester arrived had he backed off, fading into the corner of the room to observe.
The King gave a nod to the Commander, words failing him as he looked to his youngest daughter once more. Pressing the cloth firmly over his mouth, he leant down, pressing his forehead against yours.
‘Oh my darling girl, my sweet little one …’
Tears immediately filled Rhaenyra’s eyes as a mere whimper left your lips, gripping her father’s hand where it rested over yours.
After their mother had passed, the two sisters made it their duty to remain close with their father, making the most of every day as his own sickness worsened.
Losing mother was the greatest heartbreak, Rhaenyra knew if her father lost you too, it would surely be the death of him, and her too.
The Maester shepherded everyone out of the room, looking towards the Commander who remained. He placed a hand on his shoulder, ‘Come now Ser Harwin. All we can do for now is let her rest and pray she makes it through the night.’
With a small push to his back, Harwin was led out of the room, his eyes remaining on you surrounded by your family, even as the door shut.
Tumblr media
The light had long faded from the skies as Harwin found himself pacing his room. It had been a few days since you had fainted in his arms, and still no word came with any improvements.
He tried to distract himself; tried training, reading a book, visiting the garrison.
Yet all he could think of was you, laying in your bed and barely breathing.
It brought memories of his own mother to mind, how as a young boy had stood in the doorway of his parents room.
He had watched as his father tearfully whispered sweet words of goodbyes to his mother who lay cradled in his arms, her breath rattling and then fading into silence.
Harwin couldn’t bare to watch another woman he loved so dearly perish the same way.
First he visited the kitchens brightly lit by the torches alight, the fire dancing across the walls. The cooks and kitchen maids giving him a smile before returning to their duties.
The head cook, Mrs Crooke, who had been in the midst of mixing a bowl of some sort of sauce, cheered at the sight of him, ambandoning her tools to embrace him heartily.
‘My dear laddy look at you! Commander of the City Watch visiting little old me.’ She cried, cupping his cheek with a large grin.
Harwin smiled, placing his hand over the woman’s. ‘Its good to see you again Mrs Crooke but I must ask you a favour. The Princess Y/N is incapacitated at the moment.’
Her hand fell to her heart, nodding, ‘Aye, we’ve heard she’s been taken ill the poor Lass.’
‘Well, that’s exactly why I’ve come to you.’
She raised her eyebrow in question and he continued, ‘I was wondering perhaps your broth would be able to help. I know she wouldn’t be able to eat anything heavy she wouldn’t be able to keep it down, so something light may at least keep her well for the time being.’
The old woman couldn’t help but smile, taking in the mistiness of the Commander’s eyes and worry written in his expression. She took his hand in hers. ‘You care for her don’t you lad?’
Harwin wanted to deny it.
If anyone found out it would be seen as incredibly out of line, even treasonous. He didn’t care what happened to him, he just didn’t want to see Y/N hurt or unhappy. And yet, in that moment, he couldn’t help but nod.
Mrs Crooke nodded, immediately turning to the other kitchen maids with a clap of her hands.
‘Take over here ladies, a special order is needed for the Princess Y/N!’
Tumblr media
Harwin made his way to Y/N’s chambers, armour now removed, carefully holding a marble bowl of cold water, a cloth thrown over his arm. The guard that stood at your chambers briefly looked at him, Harwin recognising him as one of his own men, he nodded to him.
‘I’m here to attend to the Princess.’
For a moment the guard hesitated, and fear brewed within the Commander’s belly.
He trusted his men, however he knew that no matter how loyal a man could be to his duty, a price could always overturn it. There were spies and traitors working for the corrupt within Kings Landing, they easily could spin this mere event into something far worse.
However, the fear ebbed away as soon as the guard nodded to him, opening the door for him.
Harwin quickly made his way over to the bedside, placing the bowl down. His glanced nervously over to you.
Sweat drenched your shift, hair matted against your face. The rasp in your lungs had worsened, and it made his heart clench as you gasped for air, groaning deliriously.
‘Oh my love,’ He whispered, pushing your hair away from your face, pressing his palm to your cheek. Your eyes briefly flickered towards him, sighing before falling quiet once more.
Harwin couldn’t help but press his lips to your temple in comfort, heart clenching at the warmth that prickled beneath his lips.
Quickly he picked up the cloth he had brought, folding it before dipping it into the water, letting it soak for a moment before bringing it to your skin. A whimper left your lips but he pressed on, wiping away any trace of sweat that he could see.
Leave the cloth to rest on your head, he reached into the pouch on his belt pulling out a small vial of oil. Pouring a generous amount into the centre of his palm, rubbing his hands together, eyes never leaving your face as you rested.
Harwin leant over you letting his hands rest against your neck, unable to hold back his smile as you keened beneath his touch. He began to massage around your jaw, your neck and just above your collarbones.
His hands wondered down your arms to your hands, taking one in his grasp and letting his thumb follow the lines that were etched into your palm before taking the other and doing the same.
‘Ser Harwin!’ He turned to find one of the young maids at the door, ‘i’m sorry I didn’t think anyone would be here Commander! I just came to check in on the Princess.’
He gave her a nod in greeting, standing to his feet.
‘At ease Maisley, it’s okay. I’m seeing to that the Princess is well looked after. Her fever has gone down considerably since I arrived. I would suggest helping her change into a new shift, she may grow uncomfortable when she awakens.’
She nodded, hurrying around the room. Even when she brought over the partition to obscure the bed from sight, Harwin turned his back to it, not wanting to make either of the ladies uncomfortable.
When a cough disrupted the silence, he looked up at the sight of one of the kitchen hands carrying a tray in the doorway.
‘The broth you requested Commander,’ The young boy announced, nodding to the black pot that sat beside the bowl of steaming broth, ‘Mrs Crooke also thought it best to also give some mint ginger tea, said it would help get her back to health in no time.’
‘Thank you, and give my thanks to Mrs Crooke once more. Let her know I will visit as soon as the moment arises,’ He said as he took it with a smile, the boy bowed to him before making his way out of the room.
Harwin placed the tray down on the bedside table once Maisley began to move the partition away to reveal you adorning a new shift, replacing the old one which she held in her grasp. She turned to the Commander.
‘Will that be all Ser Harwin? Anything else you may need?’
He smiled towards her. ‘Not at the moment thank you Maisley, go get some rest.’
The young maid bowed to him before also taking her leave, shutting the door firmly behind her.
‘Harwin?’
Whipping around, he found you staring up at him sluggishly, eyes barely open, a hand reaching out to him.
‘I’m here my love, I’m right here,’ He caressed your cheek, eyes softening as you even in your sickened state, leant into his touch.
You smiled up at him, but it faded as you took in your shift, the heaviness of your chest evident, glancing around to recognise your own chambers.
‘What happened? I-I remember us in the gardens and—’
‘It’s okay Y/N, you're safe.’ He hushed you, turning your face towards his, keeping his hand on your neck to keep you steady. ‘You were ill and fainted, I brought you to your room and the Maester took a look at you.’
Slowly the panic eased from your body, leaning back into the warmth of your bed, watching as Harwin picked up the steaming bowl from your bedside table.
‘You must eat, you need to keep your strength up.’
‘I’m not hungry Harwin, I’m just so sleepy …’
‘How about you eat just a little, then you can get some more rest? For my sake?’
You chuckled quietly at his child-like request, carefully trying to sit up. Harwin was quick to assist, a brief squeak leaving you as his arm wrapped around your waist, pulling you up to lean against the headboard and adjusting the pillow to accomodate you.
When you reached for the spoon, he was quick to pull away with a shake of his head and wearing a smirk, bringing the warm spoon to your lips.
‘I may be sick, Harwin, but I am not lame,’ You croaked only for your words to splutter as you coughed roughly, feeling his hand rub soothingly across your back.
When the coughing lessened, and your wheezing quietened, Harwin gently said as he brushed your hair back, ‘That may be so, but let me take care of you my love.’
Too tired to resist, you allowed him to feed a few spoons of broth. Even with your mouth feeling dry and tastebuds dulled, you enjoyed the rich chicken, rosemary and thyme that broke through; munching quietly on some of the carrots, potatoes and onion as he watched attentively.
Soon enough the bowl was empty, and Harwin was setting it aside before easing you back against the bed, your eyes now drooping sleepily. As he pulled back, your hand shot to his, gripping his fingertips weakly.
‘Please don’t go Harwin …’ You gasped, ‘I-I don’t want to be alone.’
Harwin’s heart broke, bending so he was looking into your eyes. ‘I’ll be only a moment darling, I just want to stoke the fire.’
‘Hmm, it is cold ...’ You whimpered. Harwin’s brow furrowed quickly placing the back of his hands against your forehead only to curse. Your fever had returned, and worse it seemed.
Quickly, he rushed around the room. Tossing a few new logs and kindling into the grand fireplace, he stoked at the flames until it was roaring and heat swarmed the room.
Returning to kneel at your side, he grabbed the soaking cloth once more, gently dabbing it across your face. A trembling cry left your lips, a tear slipping down your cheek.
‘Please don’t leave me ...’
‘I’ll be here beloved,’ He whispered shakily against your cheek where he laid a soft kiss, running his fingertips through your hair. ‘I’m not going anywhere.’
Leaning his forehead against yours, he silently prayed, asking the seven—or whatever force was present—to stay their hand and leave you be. He wouldn’t allow them to take you so easily.
Tumblr media
The next morning after yet another restless night of anxious thoughts, Rhaenyra accompanied her father towards her sisters room like she had for the last few days.
When she had tried to get closer to aid Y/N where she could, the Maesters and maids held her back, not wanting the heir to the throne to avoid potentially catching the sickness.
It had angered her that she could not help her sister, instead ordering those who were present to do all they could for her. She could only hope that her sister had made improvement.
When the door to your chambers opened, a gasp left Rhaenyra’s lips, but this time out of shocked delight.
You were now sitting up in bed with your hair tied back sipping at what she presumed to be tea, revealing the colour that had returned to your cheeks, wearing a smile at the sight of your father and sister.
Just like days previous, Rhaenyra ran to her sister ignoring the cries of the maids and Maesters, jumping across the bed to pull you into a fierce, tight hug. You couldn’t help but chuckle, leaning your cheek against her head.
‘Sister you are fool to let yourself get ill so easily!’ Your sister cried, shaking you as if to bring clarity to your mind.
Smiling, you pulled away to look at her, only to sigh at the tears evident in her eyes. You pressed your hands to her cheeks. ‘I am sorry I worried you Nyra. You know how stubborn I can get in my own ways.’
Rhaenyra couldn’t help but shake with quiet laughter before pressing her lips to your forehead, letting your head rest on her shoulder.
At the sound of a familiar cane striking against stone, you looked up to see your father at your side, tears streaming down his face.
‘Oh father!’
Pulling away once more from your sister, you embraced your father, tears of your own springing to your eyes as his hand came up to run through your hair, also pressing a kiss to your forehead.
‘My dear sweet girl,’ He whispered to you, ‘thank the gods that you are okay!’
‘There is someone you should thank though father.’
When your father pulled away in confusion, you nodded with a smile towards the man that once more stood in the far corner,  hands clasped in front of him as he observed the room.
‘The Commander nursed me back to health. Had broth made and brought to me, eased my fever, and watched over me during the night.’
Harwin gave a nod to you, deep shadows sat beneath his eyes, tiredness straining at his limbs, but he would do it all over again just to see the way you smiled at him.
‘Ser Harwin,’ Viserys limps towards the Commander, leaning heavily on his cane as his hand came down on the man’s shoulder, ‘Thank you my boy. I will forever be in your debt for taking such care of my daughter.’
Harwin smiled briefly, bowing to the King. ‘Not at all your majesty, I only do what is best to keep the Princess safe as it is my duty. I’ve dealt with a lot of sickness in my life, I did not want to see her go through the same suffering that I’ve seen others go through. I must say, the Princess has an enduring spirit, she fought hard.’
You ducked your head with a shy smile, feeling a sudden nudge to look up at Rhaenyra who raised her eyebrow with a small smirk and you couldn’t help but giggle, hiding your face against her shoulder.
It was a day later you found yourself fully recovered, out of bed and dressed in a stunning blue dress, you left the confines of your room.
After some business had been attended to, you rushed out of your father’s room with excitement. Harwin stood in the corridor, his head turning towards you as you rushed towards him.
‘Ser Harwin, it is good to see you on such a beautiful day.’
‘Princess,’ He bowed his head in greeting to you with a smile, ‘I’m happy to see you doing so well.’
Quickly looking around, you took his hand, pulling him along with you. At first he was hesitant, looking around once more before following you into a small alcove, dimly lit by the sunshine that fell through from the corridor.
You turned to him, nervously picking at your nails as you glance up at him. ‘I wanted to thank you for taking care of me Harwin.’
‘Princess—‘ At your raised eyebrow, he corrected himself, ‘Y/N you do not need to thank me.’
‘But I do, because I know you didn’t need to take care of me the way you did. I need to know ... why you did it.’
For a moment he stared at you silently before sighing. Stepping forward slowly he removed his gloves tucking them into his belt, taking your hand into his.
‘Seeing you in that bed brought back memories I never want to see again. My mother s-she,’ He closed his eyes briefly before looking down at you, ‘She died of influenza. I watched her leave us in the arms of my father, the one woman able to ease his heart gone in a matter of days. And I couldn’t let you go.’
You felt his thumb trace the lines of your palm, but your eyes did not stray from his, your hand immediately reaching for his cheek to wipe away the tears that fell.
Leaning into your touch, he tipped your chin up as he brought his forehead to yours. ‘I couldn’t lose the woman I love to that, not again. You are the one thing that gives me meaning and purpose. Upon my vow, I will do everything in my power to ensure you are safe and loved.’
A small gasp left your lips after hearing his words, his breath batting against your skin. Without hesitating, you pressed a gentle kiss to his lips, your hand still resting against his cheek.
Sighing against your lips, Harwin’s hand fell from your chin to rest against your waist pulling you even closer. When you parted, his nuzzled his nose against yours affectionately making you laugh.
‘Oh how I missed that sound.’
You smiled sweetly up at him, pushing away the wild curls that obscured his beautiful eyes from your sight.
‘I went to see my father today, told him of my desire to marry you,’ You whispered against his lips, smiling as he pulled away in shock, ‘I must warn you, Rhaenyra also has put in a good word for you to him. She believes you’ve already proved yourself enough.’
Harwin felt as if he was in a dream, the blood thumping in his veins fuelled by the happiness that wrapped around his heart.
‘Have I ever told you how I love you?’
You laughed, gripping his hand between you. ‘You showed with your actions, they spoke so loudly and showed me how incredible of a man you are. One that I would like to have as my husband.’
Harwin smiled widely, letting his head fall to your neck. You couldn’t help but giggle as his nose brushed your skin, lips pressing against below your collarbone where he felt the pulse of your heartbeat.
A loud squeal left your lips as his arms wrapped around your waist and lifted you off your feet, spinning you around laughing heartily.
As history came to pass, people would know how Harwin Strong’s greatest honour was the love he held for his wife, Princess Y/N Targaryen and their children. And from that day onward, as he had vowed, Harwin protected, loved and ensured your happiness for the rest of your days.

Let’s talk about how Harwin Strong could’ve been like every other knight/man/a certain prince at the wedding feast and left Rhaenyra to be dangerously hurt by the mob but instead choose to punch through it and saved his princess. This is Harwin Strong, he’s the man who is her CHAMPION and the one she found SOLACE in during years of torment at court.
Her best and healthiest ship, argue with the wall.

Rhaenyra loves everything about him. His deep voice, his velvety tone - everything about him seemed to be made exactly to her liking, with Harwin, everything was pure and true - nothing like the carnal desire she had over her uncle. Her days thinking about him - weren't spent with her fingers down her cunt, unlike those with Daemon.
"How is the babe?" he asked, reaching down to press his palms on her swollen belly. A smile paints her lips - believing that fatherhood suited him well. "The babe is well," she replied - placing both of her hands down her tummy.
The mere thought of his seed inside her belly made her swell with joy. The thought that they were made for each other - it settled wonderfully with her system. "- and his mother?" he inquired - eyes meeting those of his lover. "She is well, now that you are here." she smiled, pressing a soft kiss on his lips.
His hands reach for hers - entwining their fingers together.
"How are the gold cloaks?" she asked, leading them both into the warmth of the bed. Harwin's face dropped to the floor. "As usual - they still speak of your uncle," he huffed - a little disappointed with the lack of respect that his men held for him.
Rhaenyra's face softened, staring at his dejected face.
"They will soften in time, I know that you'll do a better job than my uncle." she encouraged while pouring herself a glass of water. "I feel as if I share everything with your uncle," he complained, staring deep into her lavender hues.
There were nights that they spent together talking about love - before they were together. The first name that spilled out of Rhaenyra's tongue was those of Daemon. That she fancied him as a child, but he never reciprocated those feelings. Her hands snake towards his chest - wrapping her arms around his waist.
"I am yours, Harwin." she breathed in his scent of sandalwood and oranges. She belonged to the man inside the commander.
Tumblr media
She would never forget Alicent's sour face once she saw Joffrey. "He looks just like Princess Rhaenys," she mumbled bitterly, eyes darting back and forth between Rhaenyra and her sworn sword.
"He has Laenor's nose," Viserys commented, holding his grandson close to his chest. The child in front of them was void of any Targaryen features - but she knew that her Lucerys was a dragon.
"The birth was swift, and he came without a fuss." Rhaenyra smiled, peeking through her father's shoulder to gaze upon the visage of her second-born. The child was filled with sweetness, round cheeks and a bright smile - like her sister. "I am glad," Viserys smiled.
Rhaenyra's smile deepened, pulling Laenor closer to her body.
With both of the men beside her, there was nothing she couldn't do. She could move mountains, and drain entire rivers.
All because of them.
Her boys. The very reason for her existence.
Tumblr media
When the news of Harwin's death came to her - the entire facade broke down. The love of her life was murdered and swallowed by fire. "Mother," Jacaerys finds his place beside her, grabbing her forearm as she collapses on the floor. "It cannot be," she cried, feeling the air run out of her lungs.
Harwin was her joy - the sun of her life.
"He was burned, my lady." her handmaiden announced, keeping her eyes on the floor - in respect of her lady's grief. "Burned by whom?" she interrogated - feeling all of the anger in the world crash down on her. She would kill for him - die for him.
But right now, she needed to live for him.
"There are rumors, my princess - but none of them have been proven true." the handmaiden replied, lips pursed into a thin line.
The tears kept flowing out of Rhaenyra's eyes.
There was a time before him, a time during him - but she couldn't believe that there would be anything after him.
"I don't understand." she mumbled, knees sunken on the floor.
How could she take on the world without her sun?
Without the only man that made everything possible?

Will forever be envious of Rhaenyra being with Harwin. I think we can all agree that the Dom in bed wasn't her. Sir DID NOT hesitate to pull her over his shoulder as if she were nothing but a bag. Took charge faster than anyone in the room. Hottest shit I've ever seen. He was rough, I just know he was. She must've had the time of her life.
Excuse my perverted lusting lol

Ever since the confession in the garden you had been severely on edge.
You snapped at anyone even for the smallest of things, many long nights lying awake with endless thoughts and most importantly kept as much distance away from Ser Harwin which was nearly impossible.
As painful as it had been watching the princess walk away that morning, Harwin also kept his distance, not wanting to overwhelm you. From what he could tell, you had experienced very little love, and have been convinced in some wicked concoction that you did not deserve it. He knew he would have to try to take this slow.
A couple of weeks later when Viserys suddenly called upon you to join him in the small council chamber and you couldn’t be happier.
It had been so long since you had sat alongside your father in when council was in session. Or perhaps he had wanted to have a word with you? Share the gossip of the court. Or maybe he just wanted to spend time with you?
In any case, you rushed excitedly down the corridor with a large smile, Harwin following behind at a distance.
Making your way inside the council chambers, your smile fell at the sight of the Queen sitting close at your father’s side.
Alicent had been a friend to both you and Rhaenyra, however when her marriage to your father had been announced, it had been a great betrayal, even for you.
You had stayed up all night comforting your sister, her tears had stained your nightgown as she wept against your shoulder before she had fallen into a restless sleep.
Now it had become hard to swallow the idea of the young girl replacing the spot of your loving, kind and yet fierce mother. In your mind, she could never be replaced.
‘Ah! There is my dearest daughter!’
Your father’s cry brought you out of your thoughts. You couldn’t help but beam at the large smile on his face as he beckoned you over.
‘Good morning father,’ You pressed a kiss to his cheek, giving a brief nod towards the young girl who sat beside him, ‘Your majesty.’
‘You must be wondering why I summoned you here today!’
‘Well, I was hoping it would be a simple gathering between a father and daughter but this seems a little more serious to what I had in mind.’
Alicent’s dazzling smile briefly faltered but Viserys paid no mind to your quip.
‘Since Rhaenyra is off looking for a suitable husband I’ve been thinking it’s time for you to do the same! You may not be heir to the throne but you are still my eldest.’
With all the attention Rhaenyra had been getting, you had hoped that the idea of marriage for you would be put off for at least a couple of months.
You chanced a glance towards Ser Harwin in the corner of the room whose expression had darkened, pain evident in his eyes. And you couldn’t help but feel the same.
‘But wouldn’t that clash with Rhaenyra’s betrothal? I wouldn’t want to ruin the celebrations for her,’ You said sheepishly.
Viserys roared with laughter. ‘Many betrothals are set long before a marriage date my dear! No need to act so modest!’
You couldn’t help but close your eyes, breathing in deeply as he poured himself some wine into the goblet sitting before him.
‘I have a proposition for you—well it was actually Alicent’s idea!’ He took a big gulp of wine, smacking his lips, ‘And I have to agree that it is indeed a very good match!’
‘Oh? And who might it be I wonder?’
‘Jaison Lannister.’
You couldn’t help but chuckle. You, Rhaenyra and your father had always laughed at the man, his pig headed words and cowardice. However, your laughter died at the seriousness on your father’s face.
‘Wait father you are not serious are you?’
‘The man may be dense Y/N, but he has status, power, everything a King looks for in a husband for his eldest daughter. Perhaps you can soften him when you are wed.’
It took you a moment to let the words sink in, but your head shot up immediately, anger now burning in your belly. This was not a proposition, this was an arranged marriage.
You got to your feet, hands balled into fists as you glared down your father.
‘Do I not get a say a in the matter?!’
‘The alliance between the Lannister’s and Targaryen’s will be strengthened tenfold,’ Alicent perked up and you had to restrain yourself from rolling your eyes, ‘It will ensure that was have such a house at our back instead of being our enemy, not to mention a worthy bloodline to have worthy heirs.’
‘That pig sees women as merely an object! He’d rather have them be silent and ripe for impregnating at his wish, and I’d rather burn by dragon fire than marry him!’ You seethed towards the Queen before beginning to pace the length of the room, shaking your head.
Turning back to the table you looked directly at your father. ‘Is this because I didn’t want to be the heir?’
Viserys looked up, puzzled. ‘What?’
‘Are you punishing me because I did not want to be heir to the iron throne? Or is it because your new wife has been whispering in your ear wanting me to be unhappy—’
‘Y/N! Enough of this!’
You tried to hold back the trembling of your lip, staring up at your father tearfully with a shake of your head.
‘Mother wouldn’t have ever allowed you to do this—’
‘I will not hear of it!’
‘Can you not see how much you’re hurting us? Poor Rhaenyra would bend backwards to see you happy and yet you barely pay her any attention whatsoever! When was the last time you even had the chance to spend with us?! One of these days, you’ll realise it … and by then it’ll be far too late—’
‘I said enough!’ Viserys roared, slamming his fist against the table, making not only you, but Alicent jump, the jug of wine toppling and spilling across the table; like fresh blood pouring from an open wound. It was almost poetic.
He stood to his feet, coming to your side to glare down at you.
‘You will meet Jaison Lannister in a week’s time and I will hear nothing more of it.’
You looked between your father to a scowling Alicent, scoffing and turning on your heel, stomping out of the room. You refused to let either of them see your tears fall.
Servants and other members of court hurriedly moved out of your way, not wanting to endure the wrath of the dragon as you thundered down the corridor.

You threw open the door to your quarters with a ‘bang,’ nails digging crescents deep into your palms as you paced in front of the roaring fireplace.
You discreetly heard the door shutting quietly even as the blood pumped loudly in your ears, merely glancing to see Harwin, cape sweeping around him as he turned to you.
He watched you quietly, dress dragging across the ground as you paced, heels clicking against the marble floors until his eyes raised to your face; the unbridled anger that had made the Targaryens ferocious and frightening.
And yet there was a glint to your eye, a hurt he was familiar with.
‘Are you okay Princess?’
‘What do you think? You must be enjoying this, watching me be humiliated,’ You hissed, refusing to look at him.
‘Who said that I was?’ He questioned, ‘Certainly not I your Highness.’
You ignored him. Harwin sighed, stepping forward. Anyone would call him brazen maybe even crazy for trying to reach out to the Princess in her fiery state, but what’s getting burnt to ease her mind.
‘Is it really that difficult to understand my affection for you?’
His very words made you halt mid step, the anger that had been bubbling deep within your heart rearing its ugly head within.
You wheeled around, yelling furiously, ‘Yes! It is Harwin! It is hard to understand when I’m used for nothing but the needs of others! For hundreds of Lords and princes travelling from across the land to apparently gain my favour only to use me to get to my sister and dispose of me when they have become bored.’
Angry tears streaked down your face but you wiped them away immediately, almost growling to yourself at the showing of weakness.
Harwin’s face was unchanged, but on the inside it pained him immensely to see how much you had suffered at the hands of the court.
You couldn’t help my but chuckle sadly to yourself shaking your head.
‘And now I’m being sold off like a horse to the highest bidder knowing its new master will be a nightmare to live with. All I want is t-to be allowed to be happy! To choose my own path and love whoever I wish to but every time I try something gets in the way! Honestly I’d rather be happier alone than go through this—’
‘Then why did you ask me to go out with you that morning?’
You stuttered at Harwin’s question as he stepped towards you.
‘Why Y/N?’ He firmly asked yet again when you said nothing. You groaned, throwing your hands up.
‘Because I wanted a walk! Maybe I wanted some company while I got some fresh air—what difference does it make?!’
‘You know that wasn’t just it Y/N. I know you feel the same as I do for you and yet for some reason you’re fighting it.’
You tilted your head in defiance, standing tall and your stare unwavering up towards the Commander’s hazel eyes.
‘Watch your tone Ser Harwin. You will remember your place and address me as Princess! And since you're so keen to understand, I know my own mind better than you do.’
As the words left you, you knew they were childish. Your mother would’ve been disappointed, having always warned you never to say things when your temper unfurled. You had always disdained when people referred to your title and yet here you were ordering it out of spite.
However it had not invoked the reaction you had expected.
Harwin smiled, stooping down so he was directly looking you in the eye, causing you to cautiously lean back.
His hand came up to caresses your cheek and your eyes fluttered at the heat of his touch, tingling against your skin.
‘If you’re trying to scare me away, you should know that you can’t,’ He whispered, his voice deep, ‘I’m going to make this as hard and as horrible as I can for you.’
You whacked his hand out of the way, barely taking in the frown that crossed over his features. ‘You're being extremely unfair Harwin!’
‘How so?’ He tilted his head, the corner of his lips still lifted in a smirk.
‘Do you really think this is easy for me?! That I want to be like this! I know you think I’m trying to be difficult but I most certainly am not!’
The teasing smirk faded, Harwin straightening up as he stared down at you.
‘I’ve want to tell you for so long,’ Your eyes strayed from him, staring at the embroidered gold cloak over his shoulder, ‘that I—I lo—’
Your throat closed up, a painful lump rising as you tried to say what you felt, staring into his eyes as he waited with bated breath. But you shook your head, averting your eyes quickly to wipe away the tears that had fallen.
As you went to walk away, Harwin gripped your shoulder turning you to face him, keeping his hands there. Not to cause harm but to keep you in place.
‘You don't think it’s hard for me as well? My affections for you could be seen as treason against the crown and the vow I’ve made as Commander of the city watch. I could be hanged or fed to one of your families dragons if your father so wishes. That day in the garden I-I tried to remain silent but I knew I would live a life of regret if I did not at least let my feelings for you be known.’
Carefully, his hand came up to your cheek, swiping away the remnants of your tears, smiling as you leant into his brief but warm touch.
‘I tried everything possible to keep you from mind and yet you are all I can think about even when I'm in your presence. Trying to forget your scent.’
Harwin couldn’t help but lean down allowing his nose to drag against the curve of your neck, a sharp sigh leaving your lips as he breathed in the perfume you had brushed against your skin that morning.
‘Jasmine and honeysuckle, that sweet decadence, I’m reminded only of you ever time it passes over me.’
He pulled back to look into your eyes, his own darkened as he growled.
‘To imagine you pressed against me and conjure the most improper ways I wish to ravish you.’ His lips were warm against your ear, his large hands gripping your waist to the point of pain, but welcoming that only made your skin tingle. ‘How I’d happily get on my knees for you Princess, treat you better than that coward Lannister could ever even if he tried.’
‘Harwin—’ You whispered, desperateness twinged at your voice. Gasping as he pulled your body flush to his your hands pressed against the cold armour on his chest, his own travelling down the sleeves of your gown before entangling your fingers together with a squeeze.
‘You are one of the kindest soul in a depraved place like this and have been hurt far too many times. All I ever wanted was to show you what you truly deserved Y/N. And I hope you will allow me that honour.’
Desire had you delirious, eyes hooded as you stared up at Harwin, silently nodding, nose brushing against his.
With his hand bracing the back of your neck he pressed his lips to yours swallowing your gasp, gripping your cheek and pulling you up to him, so much you were balancing on the tips of your toes.
Harwin’s arm was wrapped around your waist pulling you in close, his hand gripping your jaw, heat seeping into your skin. Your hands glided across his armour before resting against the nape of his neck, nails embedding into his skin, groaning as his beard scrapped deliciously against your skin.
‘Y/N! Sister! I have-Oh Gods!’
You ripped yourself away from Harwin, fear seeping into your skin at the sight of your sister standing within the threshold of your room.
Rhaenyra was adorned in a red and black gown embroidered with gold, hair tied back in braids, letting her face shine in the sunlight. Truly the realm’s delight. However the shock in her expression as her eyes drifted between you and Harwin had you barely noticing.
The pleasurable heat that had coursed throughout your body turned unpleasant, unwanted as you stared into her eyes. You looked anywhere but towards the Commander who cleared his throat.
‘Princess Rhaenyra—’
‘Nyra—’
You were both cut off by her as she raised her hand. Even for such a young woman, she held more authority than most lords in Westeros.
‘Ser Harwin please leave us.’
‘Princess please if I could just—’
She gave him a firm look, raising an eyebrow. ‘I wish to speak to my sister alone. That is an order Commander.’
You wanted to grab him, cling to him, stop him from leaving but the fear that sprouted within your belly kept you rooted to the floor.
He cast a glance towards you, your eyes meeting his, gaze filled with worry and guilt. With a heavy sigh, he gave you a nod before leaving your side.
A sudden sob escaped you, your hand quickly covering your trembling lips. Immediately he halted, hesitating where he gripped the golden handle painfully. However with one more intense glare from Rhaenyra, the door was shut.
The quick clicking of heels echoed through your room as she came to your side, wrapping her arms around you.
‘Y/N what in seven hells has happened in my absence?! I leave you quiet as a mouse only to return to find you in the arms of the Commander!’
As the tears continued to plummet, she lead you to the couch to sit before the fireplace, briefly hearing her coo ‘oh sister’ as she let her hand run over the top of your head in comfort.
‘Y/N I am here, speak to me!’ Rhaenyra pleaded.
A few minutes go by before you finally catch your breath, opening your eyes to find her squeezing your hands, almost as a reminder that she was present with you in this moment.
‘S-Ser Harwin he-he told me he cares for me. N-No more than that ... that he wants me as his wife.’
Her expression darkened. ‘Don’t tell me he forced himself upon you? I swear I will cut his cock off myself and feed it to Syrax—’
‘No! No!’ You gasped, grabbing Rhaenyra as she stood to her feet in a fury, sitting her back down beside you, ‘None of that at all! He has been nothing but  gentle, and patient and kind to me, even when I haven’t deserved it.’
‘Then do you not share his affections?’
‘But Nyra I do—I do, I-I love him. I’ve loved him for as long as I can remember! But I was scared, so scared of being abandoned I hurt him!’ You said tearfully, shaking your head with a wet chuckle. ‘I’ve been so foolish! I don’t know why I turned him down! I’ve been alone for so long I thought his words were nothing but a ruse.’
Rhaenyra’s head tilted in curiosity, ‘What do you mean Y/N?’
You sighed, taking her hand into your own.  ‘With you now heir to the Iron Throne you were busy with your duties, we’ve barely been able to even see one another since father declared you! I was afraid that you had forgotten about me.’
For a moment, Rhaenyra’s expression is blank, taking in your words carefully, eyes dancing across your features before shaking her head frantically.
‘Oh my dearest sister,’ She sighs, her own tears wetting her eyelashes as her hand came up to clasp your cheek, ‘It was never my intention to make you feel that way. These duties have been nothing but taxing and a hassle.’
You nod, going to respond sheepishly before she states, ‘And don’t think I don’t know about the men who have come to me after meeting with you.’
‘Nyra-’
‘You should know I have dealt with them accordingly.’
Your eyes widen in horror before she bursts into laughter. ‘I banished them! Not to worry I wouldn’t be that cruel now!’
A very grateful sigh leaves you as you smile, shaking your head towards your sister. you can’t help but take her in; her beautiful smile, eyes crinkled in delight. ‘Seven Hells, I sometimes forget that you are younger than me Nyra.’
‘Even so! You must heed my words as your Queen!’ Rhaenyra says with a smirk. She gets to her feet, hands on her hips, ‘If you do indeed love Ser Harwin Strong you must tell him, or live the rest of your days in regret!’
‘Thats the thing, father has arranged for me to be married. I am to meet with my betrothed in the week ahead.’
Her smile fell, watching as her shoulders slacking and the joy in her body seeping away.
‘What? To who?!’
‘Jaison Lannister.’ You briefly smiled as she gag, shaking her head, continuing, ‘At the recommendation of her majesty Alicent.’
At this Rhaenyra’s eyes darkened with anger once more; but she quickly calmed herself sitting at your side and clasping your hands. ‘I will see to Alicent you can be sure of that. But you must tell father of your feelings sister, it is only right, and then go to Harwin and tell him of your true feelings’
You wanted to fight her words but you knew she was right. First you would see to your father, and then you would go to the man that set your heart alight.

I feel like Harwin would say something like: “I’ll die protecting you, and i’ll live loving you.” To Rheanyra.

do you like amy other hotd ships other then lucemond?
So many! 😍 But I don't have much time to read unfortunately.
I'm entering my Harwin/Rhaenyra shipper phase because I just love love love them as parents together. I enjoyed writing them in The Key to Your Heart, so I might do it again. And Daddy Harwin could, er, have my hand in marriage anytime. 😅
I also like Jace/Aegon and Jace/Cregan and Jace/Baela. (Oops, looks like Jace is the family bike in my mind.) Give me all the doting Jace content.
I like Daemon’s character too, so Daemyra also works for me. I do prefer Harwin/Rhaenyra at the moment though.
I think I might enjoy some tragic, angsty Helaemond too.
I wish I had someone for Alicent because she is hot af but I just prefer Rhaenyra with others.
