Been hyperfixating on DC stuff for a while. More than anything else you'll find Bats and Birds (mostly Sladick), and cute little speedsters (mostly Eobarry). The Eobarry pit is at this point deep enough I don't see the sun nor I can feel its warmth on my skin anymore. Also, I love being gross to Dick especially but no one is safe from me.

Evil characters and grey characters are my special little meow meows. I support their (gay) rights and wrongs. No, I don't think they should be held accountable for their actions, they're not real.

I mostly write smut, whump and/or shippy content. I really like dark stuff & I'm a kinky bastard. Writing gen fics and pure fluff isn't my thing.

I am comfortable with any type of ask. Go ahead and send me that WIP you're writing for some advice or just to share, or prompt me because you want to see your blorbo being tossed around in that specific way. shadowgast wip rec list part 4

It's been a while since I've done a rec list of work-in-progress shadowgast fics, so here's a curated selection from my Subscriptions page (under a cut because there's a lot of 'em).

All of these works, listed in no particular order, are wips that have been updated recently or semi-recently, and have the only common denominator of being liked by yours truly. Feel free to reblog and add your recs (or better yet, make a rec list of your own! They're fun and make the day of everyone involved).

It goes without saying that these works are active wips at the moment of posting this list. Past lists may contain works that have been completed or abandoned since.

Lastly, a shoutout to @aeor-is-for-reccing and their weekly rec lists, which inspired me to put together a new one ♥ check them out for more recs!

zwiefacher (15/20 chapters, E, warnings: CNTW & Rape/Noncon) by VillainIHaveDoneThyMother/@villainihavedonethymotheronao3 - this fic juggles so many plates (t4t shadowgast, memory loss, extreme trauma, kidnapping, gaslighting, even more trauma, systemic racism, and lots of other fun things I'm forgetting) and does it incredibly well. Not a light reading, but if you want something substantial to sink your teeth in, I can't recommend this enough.

You Be You, And I’ll Be Busy (3/10 chapters, T, warnings: CNTW) by theprophetlemonade/@the-prophet-lemonade - top notch characterisation of both of them (but I'm especially in love with Essek's). The sexual, romantic and just plain tension are well executed, and while all the fics listed here are outstanding for their style and prose, this one is truly no exception.

Unfinished (5/? chapters, E, warnings: CNTW) by road_rhythm/@road-rhythm - read this with a notebook, some red string and a cork board. Roadie is so good at taking a premise and building a life-like, in-depth story around (under, over, beside, inside) it; both the prose and the content are sharp and unforgiving. And I know we're here for shadowgast, but this fic's Beau is the best.

Love Letters to Toss Into the Fire (10/? chapters, T, no warnings) by Anonymous - props to this fic not only for the excellent premise (Caleb and Essek secretly write letters to each other) but for keeping it up for so long while always making it interesting. The ciphers, spells, devices and tricks they use to send each other letters are always different, interesting and believable, and the relationship between the wizards grows in a delicate, emotional way.

The Chosen AU (18/? chapters, E, warnings: CNTW) by Anonymous - not a purely shadowgast fic since it starts as Verin/Essek, as in sibling incest, with Caleb joining their relationship later, so if that's not for you be warned (but honestly the relationship between the Thelyss brothers is wholesome and well-handled, so if you're on the fence because of that, you should definitely give this fic a try). When this fic goes dark, it goes dark; when it's lighthearted, it's deeply funny and sweet. Come for the blorbos, stay for the lovely OCs, the engaging subplots, the fleshed-out world-building, the very effective non-linear narrative and just an all-around riveting story that kept me glued to my kindle for a whole weekend as I was catching up with it.

all this, heaven never could describe (10/28 chapters, M, no warnings) by kaeda/@the-kaedageist - a sequel to the delightful More Things in Heaven and Earth, which you should definitely read (to understand this fic but also because, as I said, it's a joy to read), it follows the adventures of Alternate!Bren and Essek as they try to put their own version of the Mighty Nein together. The shadowgast dynamic in this one is juicy and fun and unlike anything you've ever read: they're competitive, they sleep together, they annoy each other, they're so obviously in love.

if you must live, darling one (3/11 chapters, M, no warnings) by essektheylyss (midnightindigo)/@essektheylyss - Megs is one of the (many!) writers in this fandom who are really good at conveying demisexual feelings in a way that's believable both for Essek's character and the demi audience, at least in my experience. This fic is very interesting in that regard.

Kintsugi (15/? chapters, M, warnings: Major Character Death) by Chekhov/@thechekhov - first of all, the major character death is temporary and integral to the foundational concept of the fic, which is brilliant; yes, there is a lot of heartache in this one, but the payoff is entirely worth it. You'll find Chekhov's trademark brilliant, clever, polished style in a story that doesn't pull any punches and will make you cry and crave for more after each update.

the fugitive's version of shelter (5/6 chapters, E, no warnings) by hanap/@callingvoicemail - the latest instalment in the here is a world where you love your executioner series, which is partly a retelling of the second half of campaign 2, partly set post-canon, with the variable of Essek being pregnant with Ludinus' child. The whole series is recommended, as well as necessary reading to appreciate this one; it's an original take on a will-they/won't-they dynamic that makes for some deliciously complicated shadowgast.

Hold Me Close, Cut Me Deep (1/4 chapters, M, no warnings) by CatgirlTheCrazy/@catgirlthecrazy - this fic is effectively summarised as "Essek has his own light 'em up, pretty moment." Do I need to say anything else?

presque vu (13/?, T, no warnings) by element78 - (also known as the fic that kept me sane while I was in work hell last summer) Caleb suffers from memory loss for mysterious reasons and doesn't remember being friends with the Nein or being in a relationship with Essek; the fic starts with an amnesiac Bren waking up and then proceeds with a slow, painstaking rebuilding of trust and relationships. The memory loss plot device coupled with Bren/Caleb's pov is great for narrative irony, the shadowgast dynamic is heart-rending, and everyone cares about each other so much (well, maybe not Kingsley, but he has his reasons).

The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings (8/?, M, warnings: CNTW) by Sethrial/@rockshitty - I always love a good modern AU, and this is an excellent one with a supernatural twist. Seth is really good at including heavy plot points with the right dose of dark humour, and at writing realistic banter (the chats between Caleb's colleagues are a highlight). Being the demon that haunts night-shift worker Caleb, Molly features heavily in this fic, and he's an obnoxious, mephistophelian delight.

jokes aside I love him so much. absolutely insane little madlad. Every night I go to sleep thinking that someday I'll write this HUGE essay about his entire character development. How he went from "I'll skewer you along with that box" to "these are the corpses of the buddies I ate my meals with". From "why does that old hag even cares about us?" to "we're like brothers."

There's SO much to say about him. I know I'm biased but to me, he has the most, nay, the best character development I've ever seen. Of course that's easy to do when you start from such low standards, but STILL. He had a good heart all along, but he didn't know what to do with it. He found the right people, evolved in the right directions... and it's SO fun to imagine scenarios where chance didn't smile at him that way :)

He's my blorbo of all time and he brings me so much joy on a daily basis. It's not easy being an adult with a brain set up like mine but to think of this little boar in various scenarios... it's what gets me up in the morning. It's why I look forward to going home every day.

I travelled across the world and climbed a mountain in a thunderstorm for HIM. And he deserved every single minute of it. He's the King of the Mountain ♥ ]]

Why do you write OCs, and what is your process of creating/developing them like?

Any fandom, because it’s probably not fandom-specific.

Why do you write OCs?

There are two reasons.

The first is the most obvious reason: I want to write fan fiction with romance in it but none of the "official" ships works for me, so I create an OC to pair them with the character I like, most of the time the protagonist though I sometimes do it for secondary characters as well.

The other reason is that I love creating characters. I came to fanfiction very late in my life, for years I only wrote original stories, though I must say I rarely finished them, *facepalms*. I love writing fanfiction, but whenever I tried to work with an "official ship" I found myself frustrated because I didn't feel free to characterize them the way I wanted, since as you know, I respect the canon material I inspire myself from. For a year I threw a attempt at Reylo fanfiction but I quickly realised that like... 90% of the Reylo writers I think, I had to not only write AUs (NOT coffee shops AUs or other overused tropes like that) because canon sucks, but also completely change the personality of both characters for my romance to work. I ended up taking off all my Reylo fics from AO3 because if I want to play dolls, I'd rather play dolls with my own characters. Maybe one day I'll go back to these fics, change the names of the characters and publish them ;)

What is your process of creating/developing them like?

If I create them with the purpose of pairing them with a canon character, I think of a personality that could work with the character in question. Then I take much time thinking of a backstory, and of a reason why they come in the canon character's life. They have their own personality, struggles, desires and needs. They can't just pop up out of nowhere with no history of their own for the sole sake of making the canon character happy. Actually, most of the time they rather tend to complicate the character's life at first :p My favorite characters always being complex and broody characters with complicated lives, my reasoning will be like... "What can I do to mess them up even more and push them towards the edges of their sanity?" :D

All my main OCs are female characters. Again two reasons: I love writing women, much more than writing men, and I think there are already too many male characters who take the spotlight at the expense of female characters who are generally relegated to the background. So far the canon characters who inspired me to write them happened to be male so my romances are all m/f, but I don't desperate for the muse to inspire me a f/f romance involving a female blorbo ;) Of course I do it only if I think the canon character is straight or bi in the canon material: I still have in mind to respect the canon material so I'll never force a m/f relationship on a character who I see as gay in canon.

I can write male OCs but they will always be secondary characters; since my main OCs has a past and a life that doesn't involve the canon character, it would be way too weird for them not to have any friends or family. I don't spend as much as time on these OCs as I do on my main, but I still regularly remind myself that they need to be a bit fleshed out as well. Sometimes I also write secondary OCs to pair them with secondary canon characters; that's what I did recently I wrote a male OC to pair him with Mycroft, Sherlock's sibling.

I think it's also worth adding that like you, I'm one of this minority who doesn't say "fuck canon" when I create a story, but on the contrary I want it to be canon compliant. That's the real fun I find in writing fanfiction: find ways for my fic AND my OCs to work in the limits of the canon material. It means that if the main canon character dies in the canon material, he won't miraculously live in my fic lol If he ends up single at 60 in the canon books, obviously my romance will have a tragic or at best bittersweet ending. Happy endings aren't derogatory as far as I'm concerned ;)

One last thing: regarding their appearance, I tend to look for a real life model for my OCs. It helps me a lot to flesh them out in my mind.

I have a bit of a weird question for you, if you put your favorite characters and which characters you find the easiest to write in a Venn diagram how much overlap would there be? As in, do you find characters you particularly like easier to write for or are there characters you like that you don’t have an easy time with/characters you don’t like that are super easy to write? Sorry that this is out of nowhere you just write for a lot of people and I was curious how it worked for you❤️

Hmmm... that's a good question and you have me thinking about it now.

There's certainly some overlap. You're probably not going to get me to put energy into a character I don't like to write, say, a multi-chapter fic.

but I do like a lot of characters I would also not write for on my own as well.

I like Jinbei, Franky, Robin, Nami, Vivi, and Luffy - but as I generally write smut or romance, I wouldn't be able to easily write any of them. I *like* the characters, but my headcanons for them are not spicy from an x reader or x OC vibe. Writing them at someone else's behest (like for the current birthday event) isn't impossible, but it certainly take a light-bulb moment for me to get into it. (I have enjoyed stories with them as the prime blorbo though.)

Now, on the other side of that - prompt me with Eustass Kid, Law, Ace, Marco, Sabo, Sir Crocodile, or Doffy - in no particular order - I could riff head canons and drabbles and long fics and everything in between with Little to No Effort.

Those characters *consume* me.

Close to that level are Killer, Zoro, Smoker, Sanji, and Katakuri.

I'm kind of an outlier in that words often come to me quite easily - I don't track my counts every day, but last Nanowrimo I wrote something like 97k - scrapped 46k of it at the end of the month too cause I didn't like it XD In December I wrote Some Direction start to finish, and that's... 58k words.

May I barely wrote a drop, comparatively, and some of it was editing, but some of it was also that work gets busy around then too.

Ah, but I'm getting off-track.

I have to say, liking a character can make it easier to write them. It's certainly less effort to find their voice, mannerisms, or decide on what they'd do, when you're smitten with them enough in the first place to daydream about it even when you're not writing.

When I get stuck on a character I don't know well - Shiryu recently - I had to kind of Get Into It. For me that was digging up art, official or otherwise, and rolling a couple episodes of anime with him in it and just feeling for a vibe.

I connected THAT vibe to a character I already knew well, tweaked the nuances and differences and then wrote the drabble.

But I wouldn't write 60k+ words for Shiryu like I have for Eustass, and honestly, not even if someone paid me. That's just too much of a slog for me personally.

I don't think there's any One Piece character I wouldn't *try* to write, they're all fun in their own odd ways, but there's certainly some that are easier than others.

Hi there, thank you for your ask :) I don't do commissions, but i'm very flattered anyone would consider that! I have been fulfilling some friends requests which is why there's been a bunch of not my Shepard, not my beloved drell stuff out in the past few weeks. I still have several to go so I've also put a cap on requests for now. I may open up some in the future after a break, this time for tumblr peeps, but it will be a ways off. Still kinda blows my mind that people ask this to be honest. I only started drawing last year and I just consider my stuff to be fun, daft little doodles of blorbos, screenshot drawovers and simple poses I make for myself because brain go brrr. And allow me to get philisophical and political for a moment while I hijack this ask with a general commission PSA- I've decided to never do commissions for 2 main reasons: 1) I enjoy this as a hobby and don't want to risk losing that joy with the pressure and constraints of monetising it 2) I'm disabled and would jeopordise my benefits if I monetised it. Doing any level of "work", even say one drawing a month paid, can be used as evidence you are capable of work and don't qualify anymore. Plus I can't really do schedules- sometimes the spoons allow, sometimes they do not. Which probably feeds some of the motivation of 1, though I do genuinely just want to enjoy this without pressures regardless. Long answer there, oops! Have a wonderful day, you've made my morning! Liifa - SNAKES !!! SNAKES SNAKES SNAKES !!! He LOVES reptiles, his favorite snake is the King Cobra, i NEED to get him the snake skyscale so so so bad !!! If this man EVER got a tattoo it'd be of a snake! he loves them so much! But also for vibes :) and symbolism!!!

Snakes have been associated with some of the oldest rituals known to mankind and represent dual expression of good and evil.

Liifa has always had this vibe of constantly balancing opposite energies: He's devout to Kormir and her teachings, and yet is bonded to the Binding, a book of Abaddon's. They have similarities in knowledge and secrets, but opposing energies in terms of intent! I also love seeing snakes on The World tarot cards, due to things like ouroboros and their symbolism involving shedding old skins and growing into a new one!! He's a very adaptive little man and i love him with all of my heart <3 <3 <3

Eliana - Dragonflies! her gun is even named Dragonfly in game :3 that's why im using this banner version kfjdhfkjd

Dragonflies symbolize maturity, growth, looking for deeper meanings, and living in the moment.

In a lot of cultures, they're also seen as good luck! :D the fun part is that while Liifa overtly adores snakes, Eliana's indifferent about dragonflies! Yet she gets associated with them a lot!! While trapped in Gandara, Aurene sends her a vision via a starry dragonfly landing at her window - and again! her gun!! is named Dragonfly!! I also love love love to think that she either has or gains dragonfly wings eventually, maybe when she gets connected to Aurene officially even, so they're things she can hide if she wants! but yes !!! Dragonflies !!!

Khozzak - White rabbit!! they symbolize good luck very often, and i think its funny given how many near-death experiences he's gotten out of!!!

White rabbits are symbols of love, tenderness, and inner power. In general, rabbits are considered lucky animals, but white rabbits are symbols of good luck and impending opportunity.

Vesnia - BEAR CAT MODE !!!

Bjiattu - OCTOPI !!!

The blue-ringed octopus is a symbol of transformation, resilience and power. It has been around for millions of years, adapting to its environment and thriving despite its small size.

i'm mostly just looking for a satisfying ending for my PCs, weather good or bad.

for the PCs i currently have in play, I want Ale to have a happy ending out of all of them. They've been through the most shit at this point and deserve a break. just being able to chill out on an island with their boy toy and a fruity cocktail would be nice.

Madea i am okay with her ending either being bad or good, like I'm hoping she has a good ending but her bad ending would be her becoming an antagonist which would be very fun for me and the rest of the party.

Rossien... oh Rossein, he's probably destined to have the worst ending <3 He's a hubris wizard in an Eldrich horror campaign. The first time he was exposed to the horrors, he was specifically instructed to look away and did not <3. he also has the soft goal of ascending to godhood, but his short-term goals and hard goals of finding his family take president. I'm sure nothing horrible will happen to him.

Yes, it's a stereotype that the bulkier/taller person in the relationship is the top, that the most cutesy dressed girl of the two is the bottom, that the man with long hair and nail polish is gay. And it's also way more common for the cute little twink to be trans instead of the tank shaped burly dude.

We all know this is not how it works in real life. We know, every sane, non-terminally online person knows. Real life ≠ Fiction. Do whatever the fuck you want, whatever makes you happy, whatever makes you horny - as long as you don't start gatekeeping shit in real life situation and start setting weird ass rules based on nothing (example; to be a bottom you need to be a twink), you're good.

You don't need any rationalization or justification, just do what you like. You don't need to fulfill a moral standard, a realism parameter or a representation quota, you're drawing fanart and writing fanfictions, just keep going wild with your blorbos as you always did.

If that post was useful to get you out of your comfort zone and try to write/draw (or even just picture) more characters as trans - then good! Go wild! Everyone can be trans and/or intersex and/or any sexuality you want, they can have any body type, and personality and any canon history, it doesn't matter! What made you ship it?

I mean, I watched the Yi City arc and there it was? The XueXiao side of it had me ugly-snot-crying like a baby and I drew my first piece of fanart a few days later. And then, like, another week later I was like "Actually, you know what, adding Song Lan back into this mess makes it even better" and yeah.

That was 300k and lots of art ago. 🥲

What I like about the songxue angle of the ship specifically is the hurt, the mutual hate and blame for their shared loss, and how all those complicated feelings translate to a deeply unwanted understanding. In a world that forgot and moved on without the Bright Moon and Gentle Breeze long ago, who else will understand the tragedy, the unbearable the grief of his death? Song Lan and Xue Yang are bound together from their very first meeting - as enemies who ruined each others' lives, as master and slave, as broken companions in a deserted ghost city for endless long lonely years - and that bond is cause for both bitterness and an odd unspoken comfort. Whatever else the other is... he's there.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

The yummy emotions of all that trauma, and how their different personalities will both contrast and reflect each other! At their worst, they can hurt each other like no other by stabbing right at the very most vulnerable spots. At their best, they can bring unexpected qualities out in each other; Song Lan's steadiness offering Xue Yang a sense of stability and security he'd never ever admit to wanting but yearns for all the same, Xiao Xingchen tempering Song Lan's black and white and rather judgmental nature with mercy. Xue Yang's irreverence and humour bringing out something more relaxed and, dare I say it, fun in Song Lan that he wasn't even aware he'd been missing, and allowing Xiao Xingchen the selfishness of simply being human, loved for simply being human. And Xiao Xingchen offering the other two a bright light, his love and his stubborn belief that maybe the world could be something better - even if they have to build that world themselves, no matter the blood, sweat and tears it will take.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I have realized the SXX fandom is divided into groups with some very different takes on the characters (mentally I refer to them as the twitter crowd and the tumblr crowd) and I personally just don't vibe a whole lot with the former..?

In some cliques, there's a great fondness for mean dom Xiao Xingchen, or just Xiao Xingchen as a diva/sadist in general, and I just... really don't vibe with that take on his character. I'm glad others are having fun with the stuff they write and draw! It's just very much not for me. So I presume those fans would feel similarly about my interpretations of the characters. Don't know how much of an unpopular opinion that is, but there's certainly a difference of opinion, so I'm happy for those people to do their stuff over there, and I'll just sit over here and smoosh the blorbos together my preferred way, and we can all be happy out of each others' way. ♥

If you take a step back and look at the MDZS/Untamed fandom in general, I guess the unpopular opinion would be the Problematic shipping of these characters in the first place. The problematic, messy elements of it of course being exactly what makes it good. 😊
