I’ve been bullied, knocked down, made to feel less than. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ So seeing the whole “come to us, we will make you beautiful and happy” being shouted at me by someone with washboard abs is NOT helpful. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 🚨 I AM NOT THAT FITNESS COACH. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I strive to make fitness as inclusive as I can. I was raised by a black man who is lucky to be alive today. ⁣ ⁣ This statement is very true. For those of you who know me & my father’s history, you know about how he’s been treated by cops in the past AND how he has treated them. ⁣ ⁣ It’s honestly TRULY a miracle that my dad is still standing. And the fact that I have to even type this is devastating. ⁣ ⁣ My dad was raised by a black cop, my grandfather (in slide 2). My Poppy was the first black police officer in New Jersey. MY GRANDFATHER WAS THE FIRST BLACK POLICE OFFICER IN NEW JERSEY ... let that sink in. ⁣ ⁣ Having been raised by a cop, my dad had a certain unwarranted ego about himself. He could get away with a lot more than your average biracial boy. ⁣ ⁣ But then he moved to Ohio. The ego was still there without the authority to back it up. And let’s just say that things never ended pretty. ⁣ ⁣ And that’s how I grew up. This juxtaposition that cops are both helpful and protective but can also be scary and harmful. ⁣ ⁣ It’s been like this my whole life. And it’s given me a complicated relationship with authority (both from cops and my from dad). ⁣ ⁣ So this Father’s Day feels a little different. A Juneteenth Celebration and Education by ⁣ @iamgiagraham: ⁣ ⁣ “Happy Juneteenth friends! In case you aren't aware, June 19th marks the actual day enslaved people in America were freed.⁣ ⁣ Although Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in January of 1863, there was resistance in Texas and slavery continued there for another 2.5 years, like nothing ever happened. On June 19th, 1865 a Union General arrived in Texas with enough troops to overpower the resistance and the remaining enslaved were finally freed. June 19th became an annual day of jubilant celebration and the name "Juneteenth" was coined.⁣ ⁣ Over the years, the importance of Juneteenth became stifled for many reasons, including the miseducation shared in classrooms which only cited Lincoln's 1863 proclamation as the formal end of slavery. Thankfully, there has been a resurgence of Juneteenth celebrations in recent history but it's still not widely known (granted, I didn't grow up in the US but I never learned about it in college and didn't hear the term until well into adulthood).⁣ ⁣ In 1980, Juneteenth became an official state holiday in Texas. How to have the confidence of She-Hulk 💪🏼⁣ ⁣ So, in my Geeknasium community I just did a training on how to have more confidence. But one thing from that training that keeps coming up is HOW. TO. TRUST. YOURSELF. ⁣ ⁣ A huge part in having confidence is trusting yourself and your abilities. One way I personally struggle with trusting myself is with decision making.⁣ ⁣ I’ve told myself my whole life that I’m “bad at making decisions.” I’m a Libra, so it’s part of our personality to “weigh all options” but my lack of trust in myself has led me down a path of people pleasing and NOT being my truest self. ⁣ ⁣ So many of us have stories inside our heads that we tell ourselves... and those stories ARE NOT TRUE. ⁣ ⁣ I was only BAD at making decisions because I TOLD myself I was bad at making decisions. ⁣ ⁣ So now, whenever a big decision comes up, I give myself a deadline to decide. If it’s something HUGE, the deadline is longer, if it’s something small like “what do I want for dinner, I make the decision right then and there and don’t let myself think on it at all. ⁣ ⁣ You have to DECIDE to be DECISIVE. ⁣ ⁣ What’s something you’ve been telling yourself that might not be true? Think of something you can do today that will help you combat that story in your head. How can you grow trust and confidence in yourself today and every day? ⁣ ⁣ This is something we work on in the Geeknasium Membership!
