BOY DO I

Let's get myself CANCELLED.

This has been waiting ages (pretty sure I know from WHOM so thanks for your patience.)

So I have several plotlines I follow with these two, but here's my favorite...

Husk and Mordecai knew each other back in Las Vegas during the early 1930's, when Husk was Oskar Freedman. He was 27 years old when Mordecai was 32.

Mordecai had left Mississippi after finally finding Atlas' killer and moving on. He leaves it all behind to try and start a family (and this little queer has a plan: find a widow from the first dam collapse and take the place of her husband. He wants a big family).

Both end up working in a speakeasy together, Oskar a new bartender and Mordecai a bookkeeper. Oskar was a very young father (I mean YOUNG. LIKE...ah...13?) and with the same woman his whole adulthood.

And while Mordecai is still on the hunt for a woman, that doesn't mean he cannot -indulge-. He falls for Oskar, mostly when one night after the bar closes, Mordecai comes to bother Oskar and notices his saxophone case. Oskar tells him he keeps it with him so his wife doesn't sell it (things are tight right now), but he's self taught and doesn't have many ideas where to play it. He'd like to play at the speakeasy, but he needs money as the bartender.

Mordecai urges him to play and is smitten.

From then on, they start a secret relationship.

They do a lot together, from romance to kink to (smut redacted). They hunt, they spend time together quietly, Oskar plays jazz for him...Mordecai encourages Osk to get into a band. Eventually Oskar's wife finds out about the affair and leaves him.

Mordecai offers Oskar his own father's ring.

They're together for 4 years until a separate incident involving Rocky Rickaby, a wanted poster, Mordecai's mentee (a young lady training to be a bounty hunter. He sees her like a daughter...) but that's all for another time (an eventual fanfiction).

Mordecai is shot to death in the street by Rocky, and is thusly thrust into Hell.

Husk/Oskar continues to live a full life after this for another 40 years.

Oskar dies in his 70's with his third wife. He still plays his sax, still wears that ring around his neck-sometimes he puts it on his saxophone's mouthpiece to feel Mordecai's touch against his lips.

But in his old age, Oskar forgets. He forgets a large part of his life. Sometimes he forgets where he is. Sometimes he forgets *who* he is.

He dies of a heart attack, and ends up in Hell.

Mordecai remembers the world so differently than how he lived it. To him, everyone was a cat before they died. He thinks he's always been a tuxedo cat. If you ask him hard questions about things like segregation, his mind shorts out and he'll change the subject. (We also don't talk about his undiagnosed DID, not at this point in time).

In Hell, he's done so well. Mordecai works as the top accountant for VoxTek, and he's still hopeful to start a family. Every so often, he goes out looking for...

...Oskar. Who now calls himself Husk! The quick-witted man of a cat now owns a casino! Husk had only been in Hell for a few years before becoming a prolific Overlord!

Mordecai seeks him out. Husk looks different... somehow? Maybe it's his beautiful red wings. (They make sense. Husk always said he felt like he was flying when he played his saxophone.) Mordecai runs to him, scooping Husk into his arms and kissing him passionately.

(Mordecai loves romantic books and films, but he'd never admit it).

Mordecai pulls away from Husk, touching his face and holding him close... there's even his father's ring perfectly hanging in a chain around his neck.

Mordecai wants to tell Husk how long he's waited...

And Husk laughs awkwardly, boisterously:

"That's one Hell of an introduction!"

Mordecai is shattered, but he'd never say a word.

Instead, he sets Husk down and looks at him fiercely...and at that moment, Mordecai is determined to win Husk's heart again.

And again.

And again.

On the days where Husk gets lost and doesn't know his own name, it breaks Mordecai.

But Husk always seems excited to see him.

He doesn't always know his name, but Husk gives Mordecai soft hellos and sweet greetings.

"I sent over this new drink we have: a long island iced tea"

"I've never seen a shark decimate a poker table like you"

"you're the most beautiful man in my casino"

And each time, Mordecai falls into him, again and again.

Until one day, the casino is closed.

And Mordecai hears on the street that the Radio Demon claimed another Overlord.

He thinks Husk must be *gone*

Until he sees Husk at Alastor's side, years later...gold ring around his neck, and his head craned back to speak to Alastor.

And Mordecai makes it his mission once again
