Hello! In my current WIP, a group of scientists has invented a way to bring ancient plants back from extinction. Which extinct plants would be particularly interesting to see? And, as a follow-up, I’d be immensely thankful if you could suggest any reliable sources for me to use in the future regarding this! Thank you in advance, this blog is lovely!

Hey there Nonny,

We aren’t qualified to judge from ascientific standpoint. However, there are several things that would be interestingto see your character bring back something from extinction. Likeplants with medicinal uses in one way or another, or is justsurprisingly resilient in some way, that would definitely turn someheads and raise several eyebrows. Other than that, anything, and Imean anything, that’s just sort of weird and funky looking. I’dsay we florists have a penchant for any plant that just looks cool inthat way. I mean we did look at those giant Heleconias and decided wecould make arrangements with them. (Or maybe someone very rich decided that. Or both, I’m not certain on the specifics here but one ofthose has got to be true.)

Ifall the above fails you can always look for something that would bespecifically interesting for your story, a well-placed bit of oddinformation can be absolutely intriguing for your readers.

Thatall being said there is one thing we do have to talk about when itcomes to extinct plants, which is that all things considered theywould have to be classified as invasive species most likely. Meansthat ecologically speaking your character should probably opt for morerecently extinct plants or have a solid containment plan. Here’sa link to our invasive species tag.
