my main, big boy interest is most definitely JRWI. I would love to watch the other campaigns i don't have access to (apotheosis) but m o n e y. Anyways saying that jrwi changed my life is an understatement. It's what got me to download tumblr, its gotten me into dnd and ive finally been actually active in a fandom for the first time basically ever!!! The fandoms i was in before i didnt really post about or interact with online, but ever since discovering jrwi, i dont know, something clicked? Its like i found a fandom that was for me, and the sense of community I've gotten from it is absolutely amazing :] im so thankful that this whole thing exists!!!! I love it so much!!!!!!!

yeah, the whole not enrolling classes in uni is a mess and i try not to think about it too much rn (i am seeing a therapist and i hope that by next year i have figured out what i want to do) but i like my job, we(my team)'re actually planning to rent a house and stay there a weekend very soon to celebrate our supervisor's bday :'3

idk how id rank fob albums, its so hard when theyre soo good but i really do love so much for stardust, aside from that one i think my favs are save rock and roll and american beauty american pyscho, mania was the first album i was a fan of them when it came out so it has a special place in my heart as well

this is me writing this post for the third time 😍 but oke will do it anyways. We put a bunch of cc ideas (hair and clothes) in a discord server we have together and then work on the stuff together on call usually so each item is the way we both want me. Like for example i’ll be meshing the Ivy top while he works on texturing the ribbed version.  We also only do collabs when they happen, we didn’t plan AxA 2019 or this new set, mainly just made cc starting in May and wrapped it up in July to release in August. Then this time we started making stuff late December and got most of it done by the time I got done with my break. Having a planned collab/deadline makes stuff less stressful and the stuff usually turns out better imo

omg noooo ;n; yeah Litten is a cutie... incineroar is... well I got used to him tbh and kind of like him now? I absolutely hate scorbunny’s evolution (and most of the SWSH starters final evolution) so I think that made incineroar slightly better in my eyes. My shiny litten will be staying a kitten however :)

I really really wanted to have all my 2019 hairs updated by 2020. It was only January 2019-April 2019 that needed updated (thumbnails and display indexes). But I just lost motivation for doing it. I will focus on it next time I have a big break from school. Also planning on updating select stuff from 2018 and 2017.

this is a late as hell reply i’m sorry. I think that you have texture where the glasses texture would be. Hair texture should only be in hair section or hat section (if you don’t want it hat compatible). Here is a UV map layout that I use for making hair textures. It shouldnt have anything to do with weights

I do use reshade when I take cc previews. It adds a bit of saturation to my sims and gives them some shadows under their chin/clothes. Nothing major. Also, myself and @imvikai came up with the tropical punch palette together.

Aww Are you a native speaker? For me I think it was that struggle to enjoy the music and pay attention to the lyric translation at the same time, that made it hard to fully immerse myself in it.

hello, i hope you're having a good day!! i was wondering, do you have any tips for making amvs? like, what programmes you use, how you handle the timing, etc. thank you for all the fun edits you make!!

hi!! sorry for the delay in answering this, i just wanted to take the time to answer it thoroughly and i kept forgetting lol & thank you! i already typed this once and tumblr made it disappear so i apologize if anything i say comes out short ‘cause i’m just trying to remember all that i typed before lol

ok so ill just go through my general editing process in Vegas, i dont know any other program well enough to talk about it at length:

(disclaimer: this is just how i do it, i dont watch tutorials and my editing friends and i don’t watch each other edit often so i would assume that my way is very different from other ways you’ve probably seen! i might even do something in a very stupidly hard way, please feel free to tell me if theres an easier way to do anything lol)

1. Song: So skipping past the “choosing song and ship/character/show” theme, I’ll dive straight into CUTTING THE SONG! I’m not about that Editing The Entire Song life, and neither is most of the editing community anymore, so I cut it up into a shorter thing that I’m better equipped to edit to. I’m just using a random example but here I’ve taken this long ass song and turned it into this:

(the next step just kind of depends on my mood, or ill do both, doesnt matter)

2-A. Subclips: if im making a shorter video or a video where i’m not 100% super familiar with the footage, i will immediately start making subclips using the episodes ive already pulled into the project. if it’s a ship/character that i’ve edited before, i’ll just go to Import->Media from Project and import the subclips i made previously. either way, subclips are there! 

2-B. Sheets: for ships that i know very well/have a lot of footage/im concerned about potentially repeating something, i will go to Google Sheets/Excel and take the lyrics im editing to and put them in column A, separating by pauses in the singing. then i put corresponding footage i think will go well in column B! im often not super specific because i know the beats are gonna be different than i remember, so i usually stick to referencing whole scenes instead of specifics moments. here’s an example:

3. Clip placement: Then I start placing clips down! Below is how I organize my timeline tho I know a lot of editors who put the music on top, this is just how I like it. I also keep a single muted audio layer in between for the video footage’s audio and then I’ll delete that layer when I’m done (or sometimes I don’t, it doesn’t really matter)

I think it’s good to hit the beats as much as possible, it makes for a more dynamic audio-visual experience! In general I try to make my videos so that, if I didn’t add any zooms or typography or coloring, it would still be a good amv. And don’t limit yourself to just one layer, you can have as many layers as you’d like and put clips on top of each other (cookie cutter/changing the layer to dodge or add or screen or whatever) is a good way to mix things up

when I zoom in you can see I’ve got some variety already in my transitions, I know I use that motion-blur-zoom a lot these days but I still try to mix it up and keep my brain invested

4. Typography: After all the clips have been placed (or most of the clips, ofc sometimes I’ll want to add more later) I move on to typography! I’m lazy so the first thing I’ll do it just put down unedited text where I think I’ll want it to go. It just helps me organize myself. Then I’ll pretty up the text afterwards.

Typography isn’t necessary for a good AMV, but really nice typography can really spruce things up. I’ve only very recently gotten confident in my text editing skills, and I just kept watching typography done by editors I really like until I figured out what they were doing. My recommendation is to just KEEP ADDING EFFECTS! Convolution kernel, gaussian blur, mask the text so it appears from angles that the transitions wouldn’t be able to do - of course there’s gotta be a limit for taste, but just add stuff until you like how it looks. Also changing the blending style of the text layer is good, dodge and difference are my go-tos for typography layers.

5. Transitions: I don’t go crazy with transitions, but it’s fun to mess around with them. You don’t want too many crazy/different transitions, you want them to match the mood of the song and the type of beat you’re hitting. I usually ensure that all similar beats in the song have the same transition type on them, bbbbbbut that’s cuz I’m overly obsessed with parallel structure. There’s plenty of fantastic AMVs where they just go ham and do whatever types of transitions they want to in each part of the song and they make it work just fine

(next step, once again, kind of depends on my mood lol)

6-A. Zooms: Time for zooms! I usually just use the pan/crop for zooming, but often I’ll incorporate Sapphire FX BlurMoCurves or NewBlue AutoPan, especially if I’m trying to zoom typography with the footage at the same rate. I try to keep my zooms short and slower, I mean obv it just depends on the song but yeah. There’s a lot of different ways to do zooms so I recommend experimenting and just playing around with different effects

6-B. Zooms...but different: Another way that I’ll do zooms which is definitely pretty different (but this is what I do for crossovers like 95% of the time because I am laaaaaaaaaaazy) is I’ll drag the project into a new project timeline and start editing it there. It’s similar to how After Effects works and it makes it easier to put effects overtop of multiple layers without having to pre-render anything.

So you can see I’ve just pulled in the .VEG file and popped it in the timeline! So this way I can add zooms and transitions without worrying about layers. And if I see a mistake I need to fix, I can just go back into the original .VEG file and edit it, and it’ll be edited when I come back here. So it’s much easier than pre-rendering or trying to do zooms on a lot of layers. To be clear tho, this doesn’t work well if you have a lot of fade transitions, it’s best for sharp transitions and it’s great when you’re using Sapphire FX BlurMoCurves a lot.

7. Overlays: After that I’ll add more typography (or if you didn’t add any earlier, you can add some here overtop of the new project file) that kind of goes on top of everything. And then I’ll add any overlays or objects or whatever else I wanna add! I’m not someone who uses a lot of backgrounds cuz I don’t have a background-creative-brain so I stick to simple overlays at the most.

8. Coloring!!! This is very sad but I only JUST learned a few weeks ago that you can add coloring/effects to your entire video with this button here, so in case anyone else hates watching tutorials as much as I do here’s where I’m talking about:

This shit would’ve made my life so much easier throughout the years lol But alas. Anyway so for coloring there are some effects that are popular for any colorings you’ll find on YT (but you can certainly just download some, Riverdale editors in particular share a lot of really great colorings but you’ll find them anywhere in the live action editing community):

Channel Blend, Color Curves, Color Blend, Color Balance, Convolution Kernel (best for live action footage or footage that isnt very crisp), Color Corrector Secondary

These are all just fun to mess with. Channel Blend in particular is something of a mystery for me, I haven’t studied it fully to understand what I’m doing so I mostly just mess with it randomly until I like what I see lol

9. Render time! First render, anyway. Usually there’ll be some random problem in the footage or something and I’ll have to either go back into the project and fix it OR if I’m feeling particularly sour (or maybe if I’ve rendered like 3-4 times already) I will just take the finished render and manually remove any errors, stretching out the good footage to cover my tracks. You’d be surprised how often I end up doing that lol

And then it’s good to post! I primarily render as .WMV but I also go for .MP4s every once in a while. If I want to upload it to Twitter I’ll do an .MP4 but it’s a new thing for me so I’m still stuck on .WMV mostly.

Anyway I hope this answered your question at least a little bit, I can go into more detail about certain parts of this if you’d like!

Is there anything to do with the video quality too? I'm new on making gifs and my gifs are never THAT clean ;~; does Tumblr messes up the quality? i download vids i use avisynth to crop them and sharpen a vid then i open in ps i use both topaz clean and denoise ( i found a pic with clean settings somewhere on tu,blr once here it is try all of them and choose whatever u like) with denoise i just click ‘light’ mode and change only the first setting on the right fuck i cant add a screenshot rn sorry,, and with smart sharpening as well choose whatever u like

after it i use my psd with coloring or make another one for a gifset and thats kinda all with coloring tho the less colors the better but as i said i never use this rule fuck it 

one thing i wanna say tho u know there is a limit rn with gifs and ive noticed that if u make them 3mb+ (they will still load from pc its ok) the quality from pc will look worse in a post and better from the app can u imagine lfdulfiub lmao so it may scare u as it scared me few times so yeah tumblr fucks up some things but whatever

Introducing the SQSN Chat Room on Discord!

Hello, SQSN participants!

As you may know, we host weekly sprints to encourage creating, talk through your work if you have any struggles or run into any blocks, and of course to have fun!

Sprints are hour-long blocks of time where the whole goal is to write, write, WRITE without getting stuck in just THINKING about writing. It’s a great way to communicate with other participants and challenge yourself and each other to stay on track throughout the Supernova process.

Want to host a sprint yourself? You can! Along with our mod-hosted sprints, we encourage any participants to host their own sprints! Tweet the time of your sprint and @ the SQSupernova account at least an hour before you’re planning it, and we will do our best to signal boost it in time.

This year we’ve decided to use discord as the platform to host sprints! We have a SQSN server set up that will be accessible 24/7, both for sprints and general support.

If you’ve used discord before and already have an account, that’s great! You may not need to read the rest of this post. Go ahead and click on this invitation link for our server, and you’re good to go!

If you haven’t used discord before, we’re going to walk you through an introduction to discord, from setting up a discord account and accessing the SQSN server to actually using the server! Click the read more to see the whole post, or view it on Google Docs HERE. 

Step 1: How to set up a discord account:

Discord is available in multiple formats. You can access it on any web browser or download it as an app on your phone. To create an account, visit this link and register as you would on any social media. The screen will look something like this:

Once you’ve created an account, you’re in! The first thing you’ll see is an option to create your own server. This is not a mandatory step. By clicking “skip,” you’ll still be able to do everything you need in order to participate on discord and in the SQSN server. (Additionally, you can create a server at any time. So don’t worry about missing out if you opt out of doing so up front!)

Make sure you verify your email! There will be a red bar at the top reminding you.

Along with the verification reminder, the next screen will have orange exclamation points. If you click on them, a brief explanation of features will appear. It tells you again about creating a server, as well as how to use the microphone and send direct messages.

If you’ve never used discord, the layout may seem intimidating, but we’re confident you’ll catch on in no time! You can access your account by clicking the settings icon by your username in the bottom left and everything you need to connect with others can be found in both the bars on the left side of the screen. The far left bar is where you can access servers, and the inner left bar contains more specific options. We’ll get into this more in the next section of this post. (If you need any more specific help, you can always click on the question mark icon in the top right to access the discord help center.)

Step 2: How to join the SQSN server:

The server is invitation only, so if you try looking for the server, your search will come up empty. The good news is that all you need is the invitation link, which can be found here! Clicking on this link will direct you to an invitation that will look something like this:

Accept the invite and click the next button that says “continue to discord.”

The next screen you’ll see will look something like this:

You should see the SQSN logo in the top left, which means you’re officially in our server! Welcome onboard! If this is the first server you’ve ever been in, you’ll see more of those handy exclamation points. Be sure to click on those! They’re very helpful.

If you’re new to discord and have no idea what you’re looking at, that’s okay! Because we’re going to tell you how to participate in the server.

Step 3: How to participate in the SQSN server:

The layout is simpler than it may appear. The bar on the far left remains the same no matter what you’re clicking on. That’s where you can access your home screen (by clicking on the discord logo at the top) and where you can access the SQSN server (by clicking on the SQSN logo). The inner bar on the left side of the screen is where you can access the channels under the SQSN server.

We have two channels. The first is the main-chat, which is exactly what it sounds like. This is a place for you to talk about anything SQSN related outside the context of sprints. The sprint-chat is where all of the sprint related discussions take place both before and after any scheduled sprints!

The middle of the screen is where the chatting is actually taking place. As with many other apps, you’ll be able to send text, emojis, gifs, and attachments. The right side of the screen is where you can see who is online.

Several other options are available to you. If you select the dropdown arrow next to “SQSN IV,” you’ll find things like notification settings. The options look like this:

Additionally, you have the option to edit your own personal account settings, direct message other users, add friends, and join other servers! But we’ll leave all of that up to you. If you do have other discord-specific questions, keep in mind that you can access the help center by clicking the question mark icon in the top right corner, and if you have any SQSN-specific questions, you can DM us on our Twitter, use our Tumblr ask box, or send us a good old fashioned email!

Hello! Same anon from before!!! Could you give a quick tutorial on how to apply those coloring things to gifs in photoshop? Also, did you download photoshop for free? If so, how? Bc I've done it a bunch of times from many youtube videos, but every time I do it and try to convert videos to frames it says something like dynamiclink not available. Sorry for all the questions. If you can't answer them all, I understand. No biggie!!!

kay i hope this helps!!! im not a pro so this was prob a little off

hey! luckily, i have photoshop (cc 2018) for free with my school because of my photography class, but there are TONS of resources on tumblr!! i once downloaded ps6 from completeresources, which is my favorite blog for resources and tutorials. dynamiclink doesn’t work for me as well, so i use a program called kmplayer (also available for free download at completeresources!) that converts my videos into frames. tbh, this way takes more time, but i’ll try to explain as well as i can. i’m not completely sure if my steps are completely correct, but hey it makes good gifs lol 

so after using kmplayer, my frames are saved like this in a file

in photoshop you’ll click file > scripts > load files into stack > browse and select the frames you want to use (for this im using 32) and then it should look like this then press ok

once the layers are loaded in, click create frame animation

now, you’re gonna need all 32 (or whatever amt ur using) frames so, this is the paining part. for the first frame on the timeline, i keep all the frames visible. 

but for the rest, you match the second frame with the second layer only, third frame with the third layer, and so on. you create a new frame by clicking that button next to the trashcan on the timeline

you see how the second frame only has the second layer visible? and third frame only has the 3rd layer? do that for each new frame. notice how the timeline looks in the pic below after ive completed that (i just was to quick to screenshot it while the crop was rendering so thats why the pics are not showing).

so now we’re gonna crop. this one is set to 500 x 263

and the same is for the image size. (image > image size) and here’s my gif:

now, we’ll apply the psd. again, im using this one. you go to file > open and get the psd you wanna use

and drag it out like that so you can see all of your gif and the psd. next, you’ll drag the the folder from the layers tab onto your gif. (make sure the first layer on your gif is selected so the psd covers all frames)

and now the gif will look like this:

you may be satisfied with the color, but i’ll add adjustments. you can do that by going layer > new adjustment layer and choosing what u wanna do. but you can also go to window > adjustments and use (its the same thing) it easier there. they’re really fun to play around with! and if you ever dont like one, you know to go edit > undo or edit > step backward after ive added the adjustments i want, my gif looks like this:

a little more pink and cool than i wanted, but i did this from scratch and not from the adjusted psd i already have saved. so now, we’ll sharpen the gif. there’s probably an easier way to do this, but i sharpen each layer one by one. so you click your first layer, then go filter > sharpen > smart sharpen

that’s the settings i use. then i do the same for the second layer and so on. when you’ve done that, adjust the speed of your gif. at the far right of your timeline, click those three little lines and hit select all frames

and adjust the speed to what you’d like. i’m using 0.06

after that, we’ll save the gif! file > export > save for web

and these are my settings

and it’s done!

this as pretty roughly done.. im no pro so there might have been some weird things i’ve done lol but it works! haha i hope this helped :) if you didnt understand something or want to know more, i dont mind you coming back!

photoshop (i use CC 2017 but other versions will work fine)

a basic understanding of how to use photoshop

there’s a lot of text in this which may look daunting, but i promise it’s a simple process. i just wanted to be as in-depth as possible for those who may just be starting out in their gif-making journey!

this is a full tutorial for making the gif above, including colouring.

step one: get your video clip

okay! to start off, you’re gonna wanna get a short clip of the exact scene you want to gif. this step isn’t always necessary, especially if your video file is like 10 seconds long, but i’m usually giffing from the tmr movies so i like to trim that to just a short 5 second clip of whatever i wanna gif first!

you’re gonna wanna open up VLC media player and open your video file using CTRL + O. i’m gonna use the tdc movie! find your scene and figure out what part you want to gif - then, pause the file a couple of seconds before that and hit the little record button on the toolbar, circled in red below. then hit play, and stop the recording by hitting the circled button once more whenever you’ve gotten the frames you want.

note: if this isn’t visible for you, go up to the top and hit View>Advanced Toolbar. i’m not sure if this is already done for you when VLC is first installed cause its been a Long time for me 

after this, what you’re going to be left with is a short video file that just has the frames you want for your gif! this is a lot easier for photoshop to work with and generally helps the program run a bit faster, too. the clip should automatically be saved into your computer’s videos folder.

step two: turn video clip into frames

now that we have our clip taken care of, we want to turn that into frames! i know a lot of people use photoshop’s video timeline thing to make gifs, but i’ve never done it that way and don’t know how to so we’re gonna work with frames.

open up photoshop, and go to File>Import>Video frames to layers... and select your video. this little window will pop up:

you can either import the entire clip to frames, or you can use the little arrows (circled in red) to trim it even more. usually i do this just so i’m not making photoshop create frames i’m not going to use. the more frames you have, the longer it will take!

then hit OK, and photoshop will make a new file for you with all your frames, and layers corresponding to each frame. right now your workspace should look something like this:

step three: resizing 

from here, we’re going to take all our frames and copy them into a new file with the correct size for tumblr. it’s important to copy them into a brand new file, because resizing the one photoshop made for us (in the dimensions of the original video file) will just make the frames gross and blurry. 

to do that, just go to File>New or hit CTRL + N. This’ll open up a big menu with a bunch of different crap happening but this part is what really matters to us:

this may look different depending on what version of photoshop you have, but what’s important to us is the width, height, resolution, and colour mode.

width and height: i know tumblr changed their dimensions like two years ago but i immediately downloaded an extension to show everything in the old dimensions cause i like them better, so that’s what i use (500px width). so if i’m doing a wide gifset, i usually do 500px width and 225px height, but it’s completely up to you. just remember that the more pixels you have, the larger the file size will be!

resolution: for web use, 72 px/inch is perfect. the only time you really need to change it is if you’re printing something, then you’d want 300px/inch. but that doesn’t concern us, so we’ll move on.

colour mode: this one is important! most of the time, RGB colour/8bit will be the default setting, but i always like to check to make sure because sometimes it’ll go screwy and end up in grayscale, and then you lose your colours and it’s really annoying. if you ever have to change this midway through a gif, you can go to Image>Mode to change it back.

okay, so once that’s all done, click OK and you’ll have your new file! now, we have to copy the frames over.

so, we’re gonna go back to our file with the frames and click the little icon with three horizontal lines that’s right above your frames on the right side, circled in red. this’ll open up a little menu, where you’re gonna hit Select all frames and then Copy frames.

after that’s done, you’re gonna want to go to your new file you just created (with the tumblr dimensions) and hit Create frame animation down in your timeline. If you can’t see the timeline, go up to the top right corner and make sure you’re in the Motion setting for workspace.

once your timeline looks like this, you’re set to go:

now you’re gonna click that same three horizontal lines icon, and select Paste frames. you’ll get a popup that looks like this, and you’re gonna select Paste over selection.

and now your frames (and the corresponding layers) are copied into your new file!! very exciting!! but we have to resize them. so, you’re gonna go into your layers panel and select all of them (you can do this by clicking the bottom one, scrolling up to the top and clicking the top one while holding the SHIFT key). since you just pasted them, all of your frames in the timeline should be selected so we don’t have to worry about that.

with everything selected, you’re gonna hit CTRL + T and then drag the corner of the frame while holding the SHIFT key (to keep ratios in tact), until your frames are the right size. at this point you’re also gonna wanna maneuver them around so they’re actually in the frame of your file. it may be helpful at this point to zoom out (using CTRL + -) so you can see everything that’s going on on your canvas.

note that in both of these screenshots, ALL my frames and ALL my layers are still selected. this ensures that every single frame will be resized and moved at the same time, so everything is consistent.

hit the little checkmark up in the toolbar or the ENTER key, and you’re set!!

also, just a tip from personal experience - don’t resize your frames so small that the edge of the shot is right on the edge of the file, cause once you sharpen, you’ll get an annoying white line. 

step four: looping, frame delay, and sharpening

you’re almost there! the hard part is over. you’re doing great, my friend.

so in order to make your gif loop over and over again like you’d expect a gif to, you have to set the looping to Forever. this can be found in the bottom left of your timeline, circled in red.

if you ever post a gif on tumblr and it goes once and then freezes, the first thing to check in photoshop is if you’ve missed this step or not!! often times, this is your fix.

next, we’re gonna set the frame delay. this determines how fast or slow the gif runs. for me, one of the biggest markers of gifmakers not knowing what they’re doing is when their gif runs so fast it hurts your eyes. everyone has their own preference for frame delay (and it often depends on your souce video, too) but i generally like to stick between 0.08 seconds and 0.13 seconds. 

to change your frame delay, select all your frames and then click on the little arrow beside the 0.04. this’ll bring up a menu of options - hit other, and you can enter your own value here. 

i picked 0.09 seconds. now, our gif is ready to be sharpened!

this part is a little bit tricky and can be REALLY time consuming (especially if you have a lot of frames), but with some practice, it can be really easy.

when you’re working with frames in photoshop, you have to sharpen every frame individually. once i played with the sharpening settings enough, i figured out a general setting that i liked to apply to all my gifs, and then i made an action. actions in photoshops are basically just folders containing a sequence of steps, and you can use actions to have those steps automated. when it comes to sharpening, it turns a ten minute job into a 30-second job.

this is what my action looks like:

first, it takes all my frames and turns them into layers named “Frame 1″, “Frame 2″, and so on... then, it selects the first layer, and then selects the first frame, and sharpens that layer for that frame. then it does this again, and again, and again, until it’s out of frames. 

my favourite ps blog, @yeahps, has a lot of actions here, but i encourage you to try and figure out your own! you can play around with the Filter>Sharpen>Smart sharpen settings on a single frame until you like the results, and then apply that one to all your frames! just make sure that when you’re sharpening a frame, you select both the frame and the corresponding layer or else it won’t work.

so you can see it does make a big difference! once we’re done with that, it’s time to colour our gif!

step five: colouring

colouring is my favourite part of gif-making because you really can do whatever the hell you want here. photoshop has a lot of really cool adjustment layers, and you should play around with them all to see which ones you like best!! my favourite ones are circled here:

from L to R top to bottom, they are: levels, curves, vibrance, and selective colour. selective colour is my all-time fav cause it’s really good for changing the colours in a scene - like when the glade grass is too yellow and not enough green, or when the gladers faces are too orange at the bonfire. 

if i’m not doing anything too extravagant, i have a basic process i use for colouring my gifs that i’’ll show you guys now.

first, i always do curves. you can use curves in a couple different ways, but i usually stick with the RGB setting. i always do my first curves layer like this, to bring up the brightness of the whole gif:

and that gives me this:

next, i go for levels. this i use to make the gif even brighter, but also to darken the shadows. usually my settings will look something like this:

which makes our gif look like this!

then, i do selective colour. i like this one because you can change the settings for every individual colour in your gif, which can give some pretty cool results. usually i make the blacks blacker, and the skin a little less red/yellow if the lighting is weird. i really suggest playing around with this one as much as you can!! with some selective colour adjustments, this is what our gif looks like now:

i really like green so i decided to make the gif have more green undertones! i also made the blacks more black, so the dark parts are a little more bold.

as a final kind of thing, i’ll add a vibrance/saturation layer if i want the gif to be more colourful - but be careful with this one, cause it can really raise the file size of the gif. right now, tumblr’s file size limit is 3MB. for 500px gifs, i can usually get away with about 35 frames before it gets too big.

i also like to add another curves/levels layer, cause i find that tumblr makes your gifs a bit dimmer than they are in photoshop. with that, this is what my final gif looks like:

woohoo! and it’s only 1.669MB, well under tumblr’s limit. now, the last thing we have to do is SAVE it!

step six: saving

to save your gif, hit CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + S. i know, it’s a lot. your fingers get used to it. that’ll bring up a window that looks like this, with a whole bunch of crap you can adjust:

these are all my settings that i normally use. i’m sure there’s someone out there that has an optimized version of it, but this has always worked for me! the main things you’re gonna wanna doublecheck are what i’ve circled in red: bottom left corner tells you the file size (which needs to be under 3MB - if you need to cut this down, i’d shave your width/height or delete some frames), the number of colours at top right (should be 256, but you can put less if you want a smaller file), image size (aka width and height), and looping options, which should be set to forever!

once that’s all squared away, you’re gonna hit save and name your file however you like. then, you’re done!!! you did i!!!!

before i finish this very long tutorial, there are a couple other resources/things i want to share re: gifmaking.

@yeahps is my all time FAV ps blog, i learned so much about photoshop just by doing their tutorials. they also have a lot of really good resources! definitely check them out if you want to learn more about ps.

i also have some more ps related tutorials, which are here. in particular i want to mention the one i have on colouring darker scenes, because i know that tmr has a lot of REALLY shittily lit/coloured scenes.

while we’re talking about colouring, make sure you are aware of whitewashing! everyone has their own style of colouring and most of the time it’s 100% not intentional, but it can be really easy to accidentally whitewash poc when you’re making bright gifs. this is not cool, and you should always try your best to be aware of how you’re colouring! there are lots of tutorials out there on how to specifically avoid this

keep in mind that this is just one way to make gifs! pretty much all of my gif-making friends do it differently than me, and that’s super cool! if this tutorial doesn’t quite work for you, there’s definitely one that will.

as you can probably tell from this tutorial, MAKING GIFS TAKES A LOT OF WORK!! and that’s just One Gif. we didn’t even talk about transitions, text, au gifsets, or like, Multiple Gifs. us gifmakers take a lot of time to put some pretty damn cool content out there, and it feels REALLY shitty when people take those and repost them as their own. so, dont repost gifs. if you like someone’s work, reblog it. you know those posts with big compilations of gifs? yeah, that’s stealing. so is taking someone’s gifs for your imagine posts. if you want to use someone’s gif, ask them! and if you see a gifset you think is stolen, speak up!

What tips do you have for someone who created a tumblr of gifs not long ago?

hello love~ what kinda of tips are you looking for? to gain more followers or to produce better gifs?

if you’re looking to gain more followers or just attention to your creations on a whole then i would highly suggest joining some related networks! if you don’t know what a network is, basically its a blog where you can apply to be a member and according to the rules of the network you’ll be admitted into the member list and there’s a specific tag that you’ll use to tag your stuff and the blog will reblog it! another thing is using as much related tags as you can? ive seen that tumblr only tracks the first 5 tags BUT I MEAN it wont hurt to add more than 5 tags LMAO im pretty sure ive searched a tag and saw posts that had that specific tag as their like 7th tag or something. but with that said, don’t... spam tags? for example, i notice that a lot of people tend to use the ‘nct scenario tag’ to tag stuff that isn’t a scenario... and thats kinda annoying to people who are looking for something in that tag. so if your post doesn’t fall under the tag, don’t use it lmao. uhmmm thats about it i can say? you can also self reblog because not everyone who follows you live in the same time zone as you! so if you post something in the morning for you, it can be night for some people and they’ll end up missing the post so self reblogging can give them a chance to see!!

if you’re looking for tips on how to make better gifs, there are a few things i personally do to make my gifs look better. not that im a pro at giffing or my gifs are like super duper pretty but they’re much nicer than they were when i first started giffing LMAOthe first thing is, always try to use the most HD videos you can find! .ts files are the best videos to use because they’re super HD so try to find those first! (you can find them by searching ‘video title + .ts’ on twitter). another thing is, i use avisynth!!! here’s a link with where to download, how to download and how to use it! i also use topaz (id link it but im honestly too tired to go look for a link but im pretty sure you can search ‘topaz download’ and find the website and download it from there! i use clean and SOMETIMES denoise). and colouring! play around with the colouring of the gifs or watch some videos on how other people make gifs and take up little bits from each video and apply it to your gifs and play around with that as well to make something you like!!i hope this helps anon~
