👨‍🚒❤️‍🔥🚒🔥911
“Wait.” Eddie dug his boots into the sidewalk. “Wait, Buck. Baby, wait.”
“Eddie, there’s a dent in your helmet the size of a softball! You need to get checked out!” Buck all but yelled.
“I… I will, but… Wa-Wait…” Eddie shrugged Buck off, tossed his gloves on the ground, and started fishing through his pockets. He took out a small box and grasped it tight in trembling hands. His knees shook as he tried to kneel in front of his boyfriend and Bobby knelt down to support him, hands on Diaz’s shoulders.
“Eds?” Buck squeaked. The ladder truck lights flashed across his soot-blushed face and the 133’s hoses attacked the burning warehouse behind him.
“H-Hen, help me,” Eddie begged. Reading his mind, Hen gently removed his helmet and turnout jacket, then smoothed his sweat-soaked hair flat. Chim stepped back away from the scene and aimed his phone, filming everything.
Blood dripped from Eddie’s left ear when he opened the box and held it up to Buck. The spinning red and white lights on the ambulance reflected off the simple gold band. Buck’s wide, wet eyes stared at the ring like it was the most beautiful object he’d ever seen.
“Buck,” Eddie began—
—and then he threw up.

!: that classic collapse into someone’s waiting arms?
one more step.
eddie reaches out, feeling around for the wall beside him, and repeats the words over and over in his head.
just one more step.
he takes short, shallow breaths, trying to minimise the amount of smoke, but every inhale scrapes like blades down the back of his throat.
one more step, diaz.
he needs air. he needs oxygen, needs to take a deep breath. he’d given his helmet and oxygen mask to a young woman near-delirious from oxygen deprivation, sent her on her way and then stayed behind to make sure the house is empty.
it’s clear, but now he needs to get out of this house.
one more step.
the sound of the fire around him is changing, crackling wild like the live thing it is. the house is going to flash over any minute, and there’ll be no coming back from that.
there’s no way bobby’s letting anyone come back into this house to look for him, not if he doesn’t radio for help and maybe not even then. it’s too close to a complete inferno, too close to the point where nobody who walks in is going to walk out again.
eddie can imagine the pain on his captain’s face as he says it, but bobby would know where to draw the line.
just one more step.
he considers reaching for his radio, but it’s so far away. his hand feels heavy just dangling by his side, and it seems nonsensical to stop moving just to call it in.
he’ll make it outside. all he has to do is make it outside, and someone will see him. someone will get him help.
he rounds a corner, and he’s in the final stretch, now. the flames leap and roar behind him, licking at the heels of his heavy, fireproof boots, but he just keeps putting one foot in front of the other.
one more step.
every breath feels like needles in his lungs. every step is heavy, so heavy, like he’s trudging through treacle instead of down a once-ornamental entrance hall.
the door at the end of the hallway is open, torn halfway off its hinges when they first made entry. he can see scraps of blue sky beyond, the movement of people; through the crackling roar of the flames, the occasional shout can be heard.
sweat drips down his temples, trailing down his neck into the collar of his jacket. his damp hair is flopping into his face, damn near getting in his eyes, but just the thought of lifting his hand that high makes him want to cry.
so he just takes another step, and then another.
finally, after what seems like an eternity but can’t be more than ten minutes since he gave the young woman his mask and sent her out, he stumbles through the doorway and into the open air. the toe of his boot catches on the threshold and he pitches forward, halfheartedly trying to brace to hit the ground—
but the impact never comes. arms come up to meet him, and he knows without looking that it’s buck. strong, steady buck, always there to hold him up when he needs it.
“is—” he tries to ask, but the words won’t quite come. his tongue feels strange in his mouth and everything is dry, so dry, and it’s like the words get stuck before they ever make it out.
“everyone’s out,” buck murmurs, wrapping one arm around eddie’s waist. “you were the last one. everyone’s fine.”
“good,” eddie manages to get out, then lurches against buck, all remaining strength flowing out of him. buck calls out to someone for a gurney, and eddie lets his eyes flutter closed and leans against him, not even trying to stand up.
he doesn’t need to, not anymore. he’s done his part, and now buck’s got him.
everything will be okay.

It took forever (and one thorough rewrite) for me to get this to a place I didn't hate. The poll results really helped, so thank you to everyone who voted in that. Anyway, I felt bad about how long it's been, so have almost 500 words.
@steadfastsaturnsrings @coatedpanda16
Eddie is a shit guide. He’s not able to perform any of the skills his test results say should be easy for him. He struggles with the most basic of guide skills, and has only successfully linked with one sentinel on purpose. Yes, Eddie is a shit guide, and that’s exactly why he tries this.
Using training long abandoned, Eddie stretches out his mental awarness and pushes one thought onto the frayed mess that is the feral sentinel’s psyche:
Stop.
The sentinel freezes, his mind growing confused. (In in defense, a guide really shouldn’t be able to do this.)
Stop.
A new panic wells up in his head. These thoughts are not his thoughts. Why isn’t his body moving?! (There’s nowhere to hide in the bone cavity of your own skull.)
Stop.
The sentinel drops to the ground boneless and unresisting. (Eddie thought it would take more effort.)
“...Ouch.”
Eddie snaps his head away from the form of the felled sentinel, and rushes over to where Buck is struggling to sit up. Upon closer examination it’s obvious that Buck must have hit his head during the landing.
“You just can’t help yourself, can you?” With hands much more careful than tone would suggest, Eddie runs gentle fingers through Buck’s hair, assessing the bumps and lumps that he finds, helmet only able to help so much. Buck winces, but doesn’t try to pull away or stop him. Determining that the injuries are mostly superficial, Eddie helps Buck to his feet.
Buck, looking for all the world like a kicked dog, has the audacity to pout. Eddie’s eyes narrow. “Bobby would have been fine. It would take a lot more than one feral C rank to hurt him. You, specifically, know this.” The pout only grows. “Don’t look at me like that, you could have been seriously hurt. Hell,” he gestures pointedly in the direction of the felled sentinel, “You almost where!”
Buck follows Eddie’s angry hands and seems to become aware of the other sentinel for the first time since his fall. Eddie watches as Buck furrows his brow in obvious confusion. Just as Eddie starts to wonder if he was wrong about the head injuries just being bumps and lumps, Buck speaks:
“Eddie,” He starts slow, like he’s not quite sure how to finish. “How did you get him down so fast?”The questions draws Eddie up short, because Buck asked a great question, how had he knocked a feral sentinel out so fast. He knew what he was trying would have worked for someone like Bobby (well trained S tier guide forever bonded with the S tier sentinel), but even then, it would have taken a minute or two to render the feral sentinel unconscious. So how had he, Edmundo Diaz, very terrible no good guide™ , manage it on his first try in seconds.

February recs
Trying something new this month! I've got five top recs below (most of which are quite long, sorry not sorry), but in an attempt to keep my Pinboard more contemporary I've put all of my January bookmarks up at this tag if you're looking for more to read.
Tumblr media
Below are recs for: 9-1-1, The Untamed, Game of Thrones, and The Hobbit. And at Pinboard are more recs for 9-1-1, The Untamed, & The Hobbit, plus Batman, Goblin Emperor, KJ Charles, and Star Wars!
Hot Ghost Problems by ebjameston (9-1-1, Buck/Eddie)
The ghost would prefer to go by Buck, if Eddie wouldn’t mind. Eddie is the newest firefighter at the 118. Buck is the ghost haunting the 118. Unfortunately for both of them, Eddie's also a witch and needs to put Buck's spirit to rest, because that's what witches do. Turns out, Buck's spirit? Super not interested in being put to rest. Very interested, however, in flirting with Firefighter Diaz, who is just trying to survive his candidate year. (Also turns out, Buck? Super not dead.)
I adore this trope, but this one's got great worldbuilding around the magic, and the author is skilled at combining drama and humor. So you've got the emotions and pining but also Eddie's sisters roasting him via group chat, and so on.
Batting a Buck & Change by Daisies_and_Briars (9-1-1, Buck/Eddie)
“Do you remember that shift where Buck was off and Hen was on mandatory relaxation, and they both got drunk in Hen’s kitchen in the middle of the afternoon while we had to resuscitate a canine?” Eddie nods vigorously. “Oh, Hoover. I remember Hoover.” “Why have we never been drunk during a dog resuscitation, Eddie? Have you thought about that?” “Well now I am.” “We should call them and let them know that we can have fun on Dads’ Night Out.” Nothing could go wrong. OR: Eddie and Chim embark on a “Dad’s night out” to watch baseball at a sports bar, and after a few too many, Eddie accidentally lets his feelings for Buck slip.
I am weak for shenanigans and Chimney's keeping-secrets fail - one of his panicked attempts to escape a conversation in this is HYSTERICAL, you'll know the one - and this fic has a top-tier assortment of both, plus a lovely Eddie-Chim friendship/baseball buddies/mutual dad admiration society.
The Pack Survives by astolat (GoT, Robb/everybody)
There is a land of the living and a land of the dead and the bridge is love, the only survival. —Thornton Wilder
Sprawling AU where the South makes peace and Robb lives - but ends up having to deal with internal rebellion, polyamory negotiation, dragons, and of course, a terrifying army of the dead. Features Robb growing up and making fewer and better mistakes in addition to his usual tactical genius, plus a fantastically sharp Sansa.
Thicker Than Water by athena_crikey (The Untamed, Wangxian)
The Lans were one of the founding families of the Vancouver Guild; part of their legacy is to maintain their place in it for the benefit of all. Cultivation is important, essential, serious. In the distance, something squeaks. A disaster, is Lan Zhan’s first impression as the bike squeals to a halt on the far side of Song Lan’s car. The man riding it – and he’s tall, and lanky, and sure-footed – hops off and locks it to the car’s back door. The back door of a police vehicle. He pulls his helmet off to reveal long, sweat-soaked hair with a shaggy undercut, bright grey eyes, and a smile that launches like an arrow straight through Lan Zhan’s chest. No, he thinks, watching this trainwreck of a man shimmy between the narrow space dividing Song Lan’s back bumper and the next car’s hood like he’s doing some kind of dance step. Absolutely not.
Excellent modern-with-cultivation AU with a gorgeously written Lan Zhan POV - both in terms of the prose and his deep-seated trauma that bubbles up along the way.
A Passion For Mushrooms by Chrononautical (The Hobbit, Bilbo/Thorin)
There are many trials for a hobbit attempting to make a life among dwarves. A hobbit wants a garden. A hobbit wants to eat regular meals. A hobbit wants friends, good books, and comfortable chairs. Bilbo does his best to carve out a little hobbit life for himself in the mountain. If only there were not one final obstacle. For a hobbit heart wants love, and among dwarves that is a sticky subject.
AKA the one with the mushroom mine, more feelings about guilds than I ever imagined having, and some epic cultural misunderstandings (both romantic and otherwise). I'm very much showing up to this widely recced story 6 years late with Starbucks, but it's got fantastic worldbuilding, humor, and romance.
Enjoy the reads! I always like it when people tell me which ones they liked so feel free 😘

rewatching eddie begins (episode of all time eddie diaz i would break the world for you) and the first times i watched it i was so caught up in the emotions of eddie's drowning flashbacks of his relationship with his son that i never fucking noticed how prominently buck features in those flashbacks
like the scene is Not About Buddie and i'm not trying to say it is but. it's all about eddie fighting to come back to his family (to christopher specifically)
we get twenty-five flashbacks in eddie's ~to die or not to die~ moments:
and we see
the first scene is buck "whoa, you got a kid?" which is the introduction of christopher diaz via evan buckley
eddie's ceremony after his probie year (buck is in the background looking proud as fuck as chris passes eddie his helmet but everyone was there that day so i won't count it) (but buck Is There)
several clips from the day chris rode along with them (which was arranged by buck via bobby and the chief)
we get eddie's dialogue about missing the camaraderie of the army speech over the shot of buck and eddie hugging at buck's surprise cleared-for-duty party (the one with the waist grab we all know the one)
then we get a 118 group hug (buck is there but it's a group thing so i won't count it)
then bobby hugging eddie after shannon's death in the hospital (pause for me to openly sob) (carry on)
buck and eddie laughing and fist-bumping in the engine
the buckley-diaz video game scene after the you wanna go for the title conversation
shot from that one house party thing at the diaz house where buck and chris are on the couch and eddie is watching them from the dining room (everyone else in the shot is a rando extra or albert)
eddie tousling chris's hair while buck kneels in front of chris (can't remember what scene this is don't come for me)
the birds-eye shot of shannon on the street
eddie in the ambulance when they intubate her/she loses consciousness
eddie approaching her in the hospital after they called time of death (once again pause while i sob) (okay carry on)
eddie comforting chris "we've still got each other"/"we've gonna be oh-kay" scene
eddie piggy-backing chris after the earthquake (buck drove him there but whatever doesn't count)
chris's wolverine halloween costume scene
eddie and chris in the engine on the ride-along day
pictures with santa scene where eddie is filming and buck is looking over his shoulder
eddie and chris doing their morning workouts
eddie and chris doing their lil getting ready in the bathroom in matching towels (pause while i gently weep because their relationship is so important to me) (okay continue)
chris sliding down the fire pole where eddie and buck catch him
chris walking away from eddie into school and eddie watching him go
the skateboarding rig where eddie and buck push/run with christopher down the sidewalk
eddie reading to chris in bed
shannon telling eddie (eddie pov camera) that christopher needs him
again this is not a buddie montage i'm not trying to imply it's a buddie montage all i am saying is that evan buckley has been a part of eddie diaz's family for a long fucking time and when eddie is half-drowned dozens of feet from the surface and his life, his family, flashes before his eyes, nine out of twenty-five moments directly involve evan buckley (the only person more frequently featured is christopher and the only people more prominently/significantly featured are chris and shannon)
ANYWAY

WIP Wednesday
Thanks for the tags @lostinabuddiehaze @swiftiediaz 🥰
Finally have something to share, so enjoy a snippet from my baseball au 😌
Adjusting his helmet, he takes a deep breath and focuses on the ground beneath his feet where he stands in the batter box. The cheers of the crowd become background noise and his nerves settle, replaced with a calmness that only comes over him when he grips his bat firmly in his hands, lifting his gaze to look at the pitcher.
Buck’s blood runs cold.
Sixty feet away from him, standing on the pitcher mound is Eddie fucking Diaz. Eddie Diaz, who was quick to rise to fame when he joined the Angels last season, seemingly coming out of nowhere. Known for his strong arm and tricky curve balls, he’s one of the few pitchers who can cause Buck to strike out. Not only that, but the guy is also so passive aggressive after the game, always seeking Buck out when the players from both teams are mingling and asking him how he’s doing, as if he didn’t just throw three balls that Buck couldn’t hit right. It’s infuriating.
Even from sixty feet away, those dark brown eyes catch Buck’s gaze and hold him there. A smile tugs at Eddie’s lips, making Buck’s stomach flip. It makes Buck even more mad – he doesn’t get nervous in the batting box; his stomach shouldn’t be flipping before the ball has even been thrown. But he can’t help it, watching Eddie stand atop the mound like some sort of Greek god, looking so good in those baseball pants that hug his ass, soft brown hair poking out beneath his baseball cap, almost the same red as Buck’s helmet. Buck squeezes his bat and adjusts his stance, hoping it will settle the nerves that have sparked under his skin as he watches Eddie raise both hands in front of him, a glove in one and the ball in the other. Eddie holds Buck’s gaze as he winds his throwing arm back, takes a dramatic step forward, and releases the ball.
Tagging @rogerzsteven @spotsandsocks @prettyboybuckley @monsterrae1 @dickley-buddie @eddiediazisascorpio @ajunerose and anyone else who has something to share 💕

wip wednesday
I was tagged by @capseycartwright @hattalove @loveyourownsmiilee & @pettyeddiediaz
I’ve been struggling to find time/energy to write so I have written very little new stuff in the past week, but here’s a little more of roommates fic:
“Buck! Eddie!” Bobby waves them over as they’re packing up their equipment. He’s talking with one of the cops, a tall Black man who Buck can’t help but notice is very attractive. “This is Officer Daniels. He’s got a few questions about the crash. Office Daniels, this is Eddie Diaz and Evan Buckley with the 118.”
Eddie pulls his helmet off and holds hand out to shake. Officer Daniels does, and Buck doesn’t miss the way his gaze flicks over Eddie appreciatively. Buck can’t really blame him—with his hair all mussed from the helmet, his face flushed with exertion and those neon suspenders emphasizing the breadth of his chest, Eddie looks—well, he looks good.
He always looks good, it’s just that Buck has been noticing it in a way he hasn’t since Eddie’s first few weeks at the 118.
He obviously knows Eddie’s attractive. He’s known that since the second he saw him, all glistening abs and bright, disarming smile. But he’s always looked at him the way you admire a beautiful painting in a museum. It stuns you, awes you, sets your heart racing, but you’re not supposed to touch the painting. You don’t expect to take it home with you.

I think "Firefighter Eddie Diaz in turnouts with helmet hair" deserves to get fucked raw by his husband, too. (Not trying to discount the important emotional work being done, but I think it would do him a lot of good too.)
It's coming, anon. I mean, obviously they're not going to show explicit sex on a network drama, but the release (both emotional and physical) he's going to get from having sex with Buck for the first time? Sobbing in a corner. It's going to be amazing. I want a million fics of their first time when Buddie goes canon

carried to safety
prompt: carried to safety (alt no.12)
whumpee: eddie diaz
fandom: 911
hi! this fic is pre-buddie and other than that i have no notes. hope you enjoy!
Buck sees the danger a split second before Eddie does, for the simple reason that Eddie’s pretty much directly underneath it while Buck’s on the other side of the room.
The ceiling is cracking. It’s going to collapse.
“Get down!” Buck shouts.
He and Eddie both hit the deck. A second later, there’s a crack and a crash and the ceiling is coming down on top of them.
Buck lies immobile for several seconds, until he’s sure nothing more is going to fall. He gets up carefully, various small pieces of debris sliding off of his back as he stands.
Once he’s back on his feet, he’s immediately moving towards Eddie. It’s dusty and hazy and he can’t see super well, so he calls out to his partner as he makes his way across the room.
“Eddie!”
There’s no response. He tries again, shouting as loud as he can.
“Eddie!”
Nothing.
He almost trips over a chunk of plaster, and then just like that he sees Eddie. Or part of him, anyway.
Eddie’s legs and head are visible, sticking out from underneath an even bigger chunk of plaster that’s lying atop his back. Buck feels his heart start pounding out of his chest.
“Eddie!”
He drops to his knees beside his partner and feels his neck frantically. He gets a little lightheaded with relief when he finds a pulse. Eddie’s just unconscious, that’s all.
The building makes an ominous sound. Buck looks up at the massive hole in the ceiling and hopes that nothing else is going to collapse before they get out of here.
He shoves the hunk of plaster off of Eddie like it weighs nothing and doesn’t even bother trying to wake him up. He just grabs Eddie in a fireman’s carry and starts getting them the hell out of there.
It’s slower going than he’d like. He can’t see very well and the floor is littered with obstacles and the ominous sounds are coming more and more frequently. But he knows where the door is, knows they’re not too far from safety.
After maybe thirty seconds of strenuous walking, he pushes through the door and out into the blinding sunlight as another part of the building crashes down behind him. He breaks into a slightly lopsided run with Eddie still thrown over his shoulder and puts as much distance as possible between them and the actively collapsing structure.
They’ve come out of the building on the opposite side from where the 118 is set up, but now that they’re out of the way of the most imminent danger, Buck can’t wait any longer. He needs to make sure Eddie is okay now.
He carefully lowers Eddie to the ground and pulls off his helmet. Eddie’s eyes are closed and there’s a bruise forming on his forehead. His skin is dusty. Despite the helmet there are chunks of plaster in his hair.
Buck taps him on the cheek. Nothing happens. He taps a little harder.
Eddie’s eyes open suddenly and then he’s sitting up, far too quickly. Buck grabs him by the shoulders before he collapses back to the ground. He starts coughing. Buck gently guides his head forwards and puts a hand on his back.
“What happened?” Eddie asks, in between coughs.
“The ceiling caved in on us.”
“...My head hurts.”
“I know, buddy. Let’s get you to Hen and Chim so they can check that out, okay?”
Eddie nods slowly. Buck cautiously removes his hands from Eddie’s body - he stays sitting up on his own, which is good - and stands. He then sticks his hands out for Eddie to grab and pulls him to his feet.
Eddie sways forwards into him. Buck catches him and holds him up. Eddie buries his face against Buck’s collarbone.
“‘M dizzy.”
“Think you can walk?”
Eddie shrugs. Buck takes this to mean no.
“Let me know if this makes anything worse,” he says, and before Eddie can say anything, Buck’s picking him up in a bridal carry - slightly more comfortable for his now-conscious partner than the fireman’s carry, though less practical.
“Hey,” Eddie protests halfheartedly.
“Yeah?”
Eddie pauses for a second. “Never mind.” He again leans his head against Buck as Buck starts walking towards the other side of the building.
He goes as fast as he can, sure that by now the rest of the team is getting worried. He should’ve radioed them first, he thinks, though a quick glance down at himself tells him he wouldn’t have been able to do this even if he’d wanted to - his radio is gone. He picks up the pace a little bit more.
It doesn’t take him too long to round the building - or rather, what’s left of it. He catches sight of Hen at the same time that she catches sight of him. She waves her arms. Eddie waves a hand back.
“What happened?” she’s asking, as soon as they’re within speaking range. “Cap, I’ve got them,” she adds, speaking into her radio.
“Ceiling collapsed. Eddie took the brunt of it. He says he’s pretty dizzy.”
“Let me look at him.”
Buck nods. He deposits Eddie onto the back bumper of the ambulance and then stands over Hen as she examines him, being careful to stay out of her way while still observing everything.
“Hey, Buck, how ‘bout you let me look you over, too? I know you have a hard head, but a building did just fall on you.” This is Chim, appearing over Buck’s shoulder seemingly from out of nowhere.
“Nothing even hit my head,” Buck says, waving him off. “I’m fine, honestly.”
Chim raises his eyebrows. Buck looks at him pleadingly. “I swear, if I was hurt, I’d tell you.”
Chim sighs but relents. “Okay, Buck. I trust you. Don’t make me regret it.”
“I won’t.”
Buck turns his full attention back to Hen and Eddie. Hen is shining a flashlight into Eddie’s eyes. Eddie is squinting and clearly trying very hard not to look away.
“Buck.”
Bobby’s voice behind him is sharp. Buck turns around.
“Yeah, Cap?”
“Why didn’t you answer your radio?”
Buck gestures to where the missing piece of equipment should be. “Think it got knocked off during the collapse. I never heard anything.”
“And Eddie?”
He hadn’t heard Eddie’s radio inside, either. “I guess the same thing. I’m sorry, Cap, really, I didn’t -”
Bobby shakes his head, cutting Buck off. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine. Eddie got hit in the head, I think, and pinned down by a chunk of plaster. He was unconscious for a minute there, but he’s not now. Obviously.” Buck realizes belatedly that Bobby is clearly fully aware of Eddie’s consciousness, considering the fact that he’s facing Eddie’s direction.
Bobby nods anyway. “Let Eddie know I want to talk to him after Hen clears him.”
“Will do, Cap.”
Bobby walks away, and Buck turns back towards the ambulance just as Hen steps away from Eddie.
“He’s got a mild concussion and some pretty nasty bruises. You sure you don’t want Chim to check you over?”
“I’m good,” Buck insists once more. “He’s fine, then?”
“Yes, Buck,” Eddie interrupts. “Still kinda dizzy and definitely sore, but I’m fine.”
Buck turns to Hen for confirmation. She nods, then looks at him in a way he thinks is supposed to be significant, though he has no idea in what way. She walks off to the side of the ambulance to join Chim, and then they’re alone.
Buck sits down next to Eddie and exhales for what feels like the first time. “You promise you’re okay?”
Eddie leans his head on Buck’s shoulder. He’s never been this touchy before, Buck realizes. It makes something flutter in his chest. He tries to ignore it (he’s not very successful).
“I promise.”
thanks for reading! i hope you liked it but also i apologize if anything is a bit wonky, i am rlly tired lol. have a good night!
