Who are Help for Heroes?

Help for Heroes is a charity that is fully committed to providing lifelong support to those who have been wounded during their service for our country. They believe that those who put their lives second to ours deserve a second chance at living. They aim to look beyond injury and illness and aid in the regain of purpose by helping veterans and their families reach their full potential and start living their lives.  Help for Heroes have been able to help over 22,000 people but the demand for their support is increasing with nearly 2,500 men and women leaving the military due to injury or illness every year. Just because the armed forces are not currently engaging in major conflict, does not mean that the demand for their services is decreasing as the effects of service come to the surface months to even years after leaving the military.

 Let’s not forget that not all injuries and illnesses are able to be seen; many rely on the hidden wound service that Help for Heroes provides as it not only supports veterans with mental health issues such as anxiety, anger or alcohol use, but also their families too. Help for Heroes also makes sure that any veteran that seeks help from other sources, such as the NHS, is provided with the help they need and deserve by working closely with mental health organisations. 

There is still so much that is unknown about the trauma many veterans face, but Help for Heroes helps facilitate research programmes that aid us in understanding these complex illnesses. This will not only help those who suffer from trauma but may also prevent trauma being significantly developed by those who are still currently serving. As you can see, the work that Help for Heroes does is crucial for our heroes, and without them the treatment that our heroes deserve would not be possible.

Our Heroes Need Your Help!

Help for Heroes offers life-changing recovery services for those who risked their lives for ours. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Help for Heroes are facing devastating financial troubles, putting the charity into crisis. Nearly all of income raised in support of our veterans and their families is raised during face-to-face fundraising events, normally put on by the public. The global pandemic has meant that none of these events have been able to go ahead, resulting in a significant amount of loss income, with a further amount of loss anticipated in the up-and-coming year. However, Help for Heroes are dedicated to fulfilling their promise of providing lifelong support to those who have suffered life-changing injuries or illnesses throughout the pandemic. They remain completely committed to changing the lives of those who need their help for as long as they need it. Due to new restriction, they have worked extremely hard to adapt and have put in new measures to provide their services but continue to keep everyone safe, for example, virtual support from digital services. Although Help for Heroes have witnessed donations decrease in the last few months the demand for their support has increased dramatically with a 33% increase of new veterans needing support with their mental health. As you can see Help for Heroes are under an immense about pressure, with demand for their service increasing but funding that they rely on so heavily on decreasing.  

So, what can we do to help? Well, the obvious is to donate, but that will only create a temporary fix. The word needs to get out about the struggles Help for Heroes are facing and how much of a necessity their services really are. We must share this information to anyone and everyone on social media and we must find creative ways to fundraise money for our heroes to continue to get the help they deserve.
