A Wood-engraved Feathursday

MORE CHICKENS!!

One can never have enough chickens. Today's flock is from a wood engraving by Kentucky potter and engraver Gwen Heffner (1952-2021) entitled Three French Hens from the catalog of the Fourth Triennial Exhibition 2020-2022 of the American American wood engravers society, the Wood Engravers’ Network (WEN). We love how Heffner captures the goofy, maniacal look that chickens often have.

Gwen Heffner received her BA degree in printmaking and ceramics from Luther College in Iowa and her graduate degree in ceramics from the University of Louisville, and she maintained a pottery outside Irvine, Kentucky. Heffner worked as an artist for school systems in her state and had long associations with the Contemporary Artifacts Gallery and the Kentucky Artisan Center, both in Berea, Kentucky. Unfortunately, Heffner passed away before this catalog was printed. We are pleased to share her print with you.

Maitake and deer jawbone

Fungi February: The hen-of-the-woods is also known as the maitake at fancy restaurants. It is a perennial, so once established it can produce mushrooms in the same location for years. The polysaccharides contained in the mushroom have potential medicinal value, but more research is needed.

Disclaimer: Don’t rely on pictures of cute mushrooms with eyes to accurately identify edible mushrooms. At best the wrong one will taste bad, at worst it’ll be deadly!

When I first found this mushroom last year, it was already well past its prime. So happy I got to it in time this year, even with the broken body 🙌

The Wood Duck is sexually dimorphic, meaning the females look different from the males. Females have a greyish brown head with a white eye ring, a dark brown chest with light brown streaks, and a dark bill. Wood ducks nest in tree cavities and have sharp claws that allow them to perch on branches.

The Bufflehead is sexually dimorphic, meaning the females look different from the males. The female has a dark greyish brown head with a white oval-shaped patch behind and below the eye. They typically nest in holes created by woodpeckers. The Bufflehead is an incredibly small species of duck, with an average length of 34 centimetres or 13.5 inches.
