OKAY people this got WAY out of hand and i wrote 7 pages of an entire au plotline so uh. sorry everybody but it’s gonna be split into at least a couple different postswe’ll call this CHAPTER 1: (chapter 2 can be found HERE)I roleplay on MMORPGs so you’re gonna have to deal with my self indulgent online roleplaying AU. There will be klance but I have to SET THE STAGE first so bear with me. basically this is just multiplayer online video game roleplaying garbage. on that note, enjoy.

hunk and pidge were the first ones to discover the video game “Voltron.” they dicked around on it just to test out the game controls and perhaps get coding ideas for a game they are trying to create, but they ended up kinda enjoying it. the gameplay has its issues but is overall pretty fluid.

hunk plays a rogue. he has to turn the game volume down sometimes because of the gross gorey noises the game makes when he stabs people. he probably would have rerolled as a different class just to escape the gruesome sound effects, but he really likes being able to enter stealth. he says it makes him feel “safe”

pidge plays a mage. hunk is under the impression that it’s because she wants to play a class with high intelligence points, and pidge doesn’t correct him. but really she just likes the idea of turning her enemies into frogs

shiro is hanging out with matt one day and ends up watching pidge play. he wants to be Hip and Cool so he decides to create a trial account and see if he likes it. turns out, he’s TERRIBLE at the actual gameplay (his computer reflexes are Bad and he keeps dying to basic mechanics on literally every boss fight. matt downloads the game and creates a priest out of pity just to help keep shiro alive while he levels)

“you’re the one who has died seven times now to haxus. literally all you have to do is not stand in the fire. you’re a FULLY ARMORED PALADIN TANK how are you dying so quic—wait a minute. shiro. shiro why are you still wearing your level 1 starting gear.”

however, he finds out that the server they’re playing on has a roleplaying community! he figures he doesnt need swift reflexes to roleplay, so he starts dipping his toe into RP and discovers he really likes it. he enjoys writing stories about his heroic character, and enjoys combining those stories with the stories of other people he meets in the game. it’s like collaborative fantasy fiction writing, and it quickly becomes a passion of his

pidge and matt tease him endlessly for it. hunk is an angel and is very supportive of shiro’s new hobby. he is the only one who will listen to shiro gush about his character. unfortunately when shiro designed the character, he did not have a good grasp on roleplay, so the character is goofy looking and has an overly dramatic backstory involving dragons and a lost royal bloodline. hunk kindly chooses not to comment on it, and instead helps him develop new ideas and plots for his character’s adventures

eventually shiro manages to convince hunk to give RP a try. hunk is very careful and does a lot of research on the Voltron universe lore. he reads all the fanmade wiki pages, roleplaying guides on the game forums, etc., until he feels confident he can create a good character. he does (and eventually goes on to be a popular community figure who hosts huge server events and is friends with literally everyone, but that is several months down the line), and he and shiro begin their roleplaying adventures together

hunk gets Really Into It. fast. like faster than shiro. and he takes it SERIOUSLY; he is a total lore nerd & WILL tell you (in a very gentle, caring tone) if your character’s story/actions do not comply with the game’s established lore

“your character’s outfit is so cool! btw tho, I noticed you mentioned your character was born in the castle of lions—just wanted to let you know, it was actually only rediscovered and unlocked about 10 years ago in the game’s timeline, so it wouldn’t really make work for your character to be born there, since they’re 27 D: but if you want I can help you come up with a different birthplace :)”

keith, lance, and allura had thus far managed to resist the voltron bug. they just aren’t into mmorpg stuff, they insist. single-player games, sure, but open-world multi-player? sounds weird

lance falls first. Hunk hits him with the puppy dog eyes and its all over for him

he creates the most ridiculously beautiful character he can

“i dont care about whether my guy is a freaking dps or not, hunk, i need him to have an ass like a kardashian. WHERE IS THE BUTT SLIDER HUNK. i have a NICE ASS and i want it IMMORTALIZED IN PIXEL FORM”

he does, in fact, end up picking dps. hunk shows him the archer class and he lights up like a christmas tree

allura falls next. her and lance’s weekly “self-care spa sessions” turn into lance rambling about all the wacky stuff he and hunk and shiro got up to that week, and she eventually cracks under the pressure because she Hates when there’s a new fad and she doesn’t understand it

“and then this guy came up to us and started roleplaying with us in ALL LOWER CASE and shiro and i wanted to d i e but hunk was all ‘nooo he’s just a newbie in need of some pointers’ and then spent the next TWENTY FREAKING MINUTES giving this guy tips and tricks about grammar and punctuation–”

within 2 days she has gotten almost halfway through leveling her new druid healer because she is Determined damn it

coran, allura’s uncle, also begins playing shortly thereafter. allura never says why exactly, but it does seem to be a direct result of her influence somehow. he plays a gunslinger class because he’s “always wanted to be a ‘rooting & tooting cowboy,’ as you call it!”

for whatever reason, he is Very Good at the game, like freakishly skilled. everyone is kind of afraid to question it so they just accept it and move on

he and pidge are really the only ones who are focusing on the actual game content anymore, so they start doing high-level raids together and then begin to gain something of a reputation as a terrifying duo in player-versus-player combat.

keith is resilient. he is a notoriously stubborn boy and no amount of puppy dog eyes from hunk or persuasive lectures from shiro will convince him to step outside his comfort zone

but lance, well. lance knows exactly how to get keith to do what he wants

keith takes SO LONG that eventually lance has to leave for dance lessons and when he gets back keith is only JUST finishing up

turns out he took so long because he wanted to use every resource available in the game to make the character look like a carbon copy of himself. the end result would have been impressive if it wasn’t so eerily accurate

Aki and Destiny are actually my fiance's OCs, in the same giant universe as Ace! For every OC you see of mine, there's very likely an OC of his that compliments them, pf. His blog is @setokinss ! I'm unsure if he's ever posted a picture of Aki before, but I believe there's images of Destiny, and there's quite a few of Seto, his main OC! Seto is basically...the cyborg God of our universes, to put it very VERY very simply. There's a lot to him!

As for Aki, theres a lot to unpack there as well! My fiance will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Aki was kidnapped when he was young after his parents were murdered, and taken in by a woman named Erica! She heavily groomed him for years until he killed her when he was on the verge of death! He basically pleaded with God to help him, give him something, anything, and boy well! He got something! He actually has a parasite in the same vein as Ace's, though if you were to compare the two, it's most like they're two different species. Aki's parasite makes him immortal, and slowly takes over his entire body, basically turning his insides into black tar lol. If a limb is cut off, the parasite will reach out and pull things from any source it can to slap it back onto aki's body! Only flesh ofc. Again my fiance will correct me if I'm wrong,,,

And Destiny! He's a part of my fiance's original story with Seto! It's very long and convoluted on it's own but its...so, so good. He once summarized it all to me in the span of 2 hours and I cried, lol. Destiny is....hm! He used to be a police officer! Unwillingly, but C; he was very!!! Bloodthirsty.... but hes also very bubbly and cute NOW, in THIS world! We have a whole thing with worlds and that would take a whole post to explain, too. But long story short, hes in a NEW world because his collapsed and doesnt exist anymore, and hes here thanks to Seto. Hes also basically a copy of the real Destiny. He's currently Ace's boyfriend! When he showed up Ace HATED him. He wanted to fight him. And then...u know, they fell in love, lol. Ace realized that he can like someone other than Aki, and he eventually apologized to Aki and took responsibility for everything thanks to Destiny and some others. AH my fiance could explain Destiny so much better than I am, lol. But from my perspective, Destiny is pure-hearted and just wants to do what's right! Which is why he's been tricked and taken advantage of by so many of our world's antagonists :( Currently in the story he's an antagonist, and Ace and Seto are trying to bring him back home while everyone else agrees they should just kill him, lol. It's hard to write because I love him so much :( !!!

And anything else about Ace? Hmm. His full name is Trace Dalca, but he will never tell you that. He really does like knives! He has a collection. He DESPISES my OC Robbie, and also Dmitri to an extent as he's the one that tortured him. He dropped out of school as a freshman to join a cult, and he was pretty much a delinquent before that, so. He has no reading comprehension, and he's kind of an idiot, lol. Now that he's older, he has a little ponytail! He also wears his brother kai's sweater, but finally recovers enough to wear other things later in life. He doesnt like being touched by anyone at all, other than Destiny, and even that took a while. He recently became close with Zero, Seto's father (kind of...seto is a robot based off of Zero's actual biological son, Seto!), and Zero has become a father figure to Ace.

11 is a direct result of the 10th doctor trying not to regenerate. when he’s about to sacrifice himself for wilf, he briefly lets himself be weak, lamenting that he has to die to save one insignificant human life. but it doesn’t matter, because he's already made his choice. where he stands is where he falls. that’s the only thing that matters. the heart of the doctor’s character is that he always does the the kind thing, the decent thing. 11 "has a shard of ice in his heart”. he’s the man who forgets, who puts up the most walls. he hides from things that hurt. he spends too much time traveling alone. if 10 was an open wound, 11 is the scab.

which would have been super interesting if the the show ever did anything with it, but in the end what we got is a callous smartass who fucks around for 3 seasons being too Unknowable and Ambiguous for character development. he’s never really challenged because he always has all the cards (or at the very least has one plan that the audience doesnt know about until the end) and he often does shitty uncharacteristic things like leave a guy for dead on a spaceship targeted by missiles. in comparison, when the 9th or 10th doctor did something like that, they would face immediate repercussions and learn something within that episode. all the writers really do with 11 is continue to point out him being an asshole from time to time without ever letting it develop into something resembling an interesting or likable character trait.

you can hear the difference in the way he treats people. you never hear him say “i’m sorry” anymore, in that way that 9 and 10 used to. you know? 10 especially always stopped to reassure people when they were going through something scary. we really only get to see that side of 11 when he’s talking to his close friends (or to children). the whole point of the show used to be that everyone was important.

i mean i’ve watched the last season of capaldi’s run already so i know it eventually sort of gets back on track but like... that scene where 11 orders the genocide of the silence without even blinking an eye? it’s framed as a victory, and never even brought up again. and it just feels so... viscerally wrong. it’s about as far away from the show’s original themes as you can get.

and another example of this change can be seen in two scenes -- both in which the doctor is essentially talking about who he is in relation to the rest of the universe. the first one is from the end of time part 2, when wilf tells the doctor that humans “must look like ants” in comparison to him, and the doctor says, without hesitation, “i think you look like giants.” because of course he would. he lives to serve humanity, he always has -- at the beginning of 9′s run, that was motivated by his guilt over the time war, but now his genuine love and respect for the people he’s met in his travels has started to edge that out as a motivation. he’s humble, and he’s grateful. this simple exchange is a great snippet of that character development. 

and then, there’s a similar conversation the doctor has with clara in season 7. she tells him that everyone who he meets must seem like ghosts to him. and in response to that, he says, “you’re not that. you are the only mystery worth solving.” this is response is a lot more impersonal, and there’s also kind of a coy implication that he’s the only one who can solve that mystery. the 11th doctor doesn’t just distance himself, he places himself above humanity. this happens in the same episode where he encounters a ghost/time traveler that’s screaming “help me” constantly and he complains about her not being a FUN adventure. again, this is utterly wrong. it’s wrong because his aloofness is not challenged. because it’s not challenged, it’s not interesting or even that entertaining.

so, the doctor’s whole thing is that they aspire to kindness above all else, because they’re an immortal time traveler and therefore have more responsibility to do so than anyone else, and isn’t always capable of upholding it but is proud to try anyway. and in the end they need to rely on people like everybody else, and that’s the driving force of the show, it really isn’t an idea that gets stale, even after who knows how many seasons. that wasn’t what needed to be fixed or subverted about the show, just, polished? occasionally? like just change up the adventures and give the doctor some new morality problems to tackle once in a while? like! i’m sorry but if there was one show that didn’t need to try to be edgy to be entertaining it was doctor who ffs.

tldr; making the doctor bitter and closed-off might have been a good short term thing to explore, for maybe half a season at most, but they didn’t even. explore it?? it’s just permanently an undercurrent of his character that’s just poked at occasionally? and that’s why the his run of the show feels so soulless compared to earlier episodes.
