I mean…we're having quite a few of those so the moniker needed to change. It also helps this is mostly a regular episode of Hey Arnold!…albeit an outstanding one of full length. Probably the most significant quality of the series is how masterfully it balanced the more surreal and cartoony elements with the more grounded problems and storylines of the cast. Unlike many other cartoons of the time, even including adult animation, it managed to make a relatable sense of belivability to many of it's more outlandish characters, which established it as an interesting cartoon proponent of magic realism.
That said, the Christmas special is fairly devoid of the more fantastic elements and it paints a heartwarming tale in the back of a haunting reality of America. The very fact this episode alluded to to the Vietnam war(albeit not by name) and the separation of families due to the armed conflict is a tasteful exploration of heavy subjects through the eyes of urban children, something the show is an expert at. Mr. Hyunh's backstory, while told in a very abridged fashion to fit the show's run time, is a fairly tragic setup that no doubt mirrors at least some of the realities of Vietnamese immigrants from the postwar. His plight hits straight to the heart, you just want to give the poor man a hug. And Arnold being the wholesome kid he is can't help but want to give him a Christmas miracle: to reunite him with his daughter.
The really beautiful thing about this is how simple in execution it all is. You don't need to make a Christmas special to be bombastic or overly colorful to make it mean something. In fact, it's the altruistic act of giving away which allows the characters to make that miracle happen, not divine intervention but the goodwill of people. In plural, because Helga's more comedic sideplot ends up intertwining in a meaningful way as she's the one to save the day. This series really had something special.
Vik's parents: *mildly concerned that their son is dating a killer android ONLY BECAUSE they just found out he was built the year they were born and that's weird to think about*
Vik, realizing he regularly gets his guts rearranged by a robot built before The Moon Landing:
Christmas is here and Arnold and Mai has a very big mission, give to old mother her lost daughter, while Helga trying to meet Miriam... is this gonna be a big disaster?
La Navidad está aquí y Arnold y Mai tienen una misión muy grande, darle a la anciana a su hija perdida, mientras Helga intenta conocer a Miriam... ¿Será esto un gran desastre?
