Voiceplay Visuals: Hide And Seek (Ding Dong!)

"Hang on, you're skipping In The Hall Of The Mountain King?" Truth be told, I've never even watched that one. I've seen the thumbnail of course, and well, my weirdness-tolerance in my brain only goes so far. Be glad you're getting a post about this video, because it took me a while to decide to watch it, and I've only seen it like 3 times max.

This was Voiceplay's Halloween video of 2022, released on the 8th of October, and features Lauren Paley, who I don't really know anything about, but apparently she's popular on Tiktok and is known as "the stairwell siren" due her typical choice of singing location. The song is originally a Vocaloid song, but Voiceplay gave it a little bit (understatement of the century) of Disney flair, or more specifically, Disneyland flair, as the video is filmed as if you were watching a performance inside the Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland, literally. This might not be one of my most-favourite videos to watch or VP songs to listen to, but I gotta admit that the visual stuff is freaking insane in this video, and I do have a fair few things to talk about with this one, so let's get into it!

(Warning: this post includes a fair bit of infodumping)

I'll get to each person individually in a minute, but first check out the set design! Like a lot of Voiceplay's videos nowadays. this was filmed at Pattycake Productions studios, and Tony Wakim was heavily involved with this one - credited with costuming, props, puppeteering, and direction, so shoutout to him! And shoutout also to Layne, the other half of Pattycake Productions, who arranged the cover and was in charge of the video concept.

I've never been to DisneyLand/World (I've never even been overseas, and there are no Disney parks in Australia), but when I was a little younger (like during mid high school?) I went through a bit of a phase of interest in Disney parks, wanting to learn stuff about them and watching shows from the parks on YouTube and stuff (if only I had been watching shows from Universal Studios in Orlando...), so I'm not entirely unfamiliar with the Haunted Mansion ride/attraction, and I currently have Disney Wiki on hand to help provide further elaboration and comparison pictures.

Alright, character time!

Let's start with Cesar in the middle, who is absolutely serving as Madame Leota, a disembodied head in a crystal ball who conducts "an otherworldly séance in an attempt to summon spirits and assist them in materializing." (And I'm not meant to be talking about the arrangement, but I would feel bad if I didn't mention that the "serpents and spiders" incantation that Cesar does before the beat kicks in is actually part of Madame Leota's incantation, not from the Hide And Seek song!) (Also fun fact: Madame Leota was originally voiced by Eleanor Audley, who also voiced both Lady Tremaine in Cinderella and Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty!)

Could you immediately tell based on just the thumbnail which one was Layne and which one was Geoff? I did actually get it right (could I really call myself a devoted Geoff stan if I didn't?), but honestly I did start to second-guess myself a little.

So in the left-hand column here, we have Layne, and my god Tony and Rick Underwood both really went off for this one. Layne is playing the Hatbox Ghost, who looks like this!

And if it weren't enough to be wondering how long Layne spent in the makeup chair for his extremely ghostly appearance (note that he's also completely clean-shaven, which is quite rare for him, but obviously necessary for the character look), then next we have Geoff, in the right-hand column, and do you see why I don't watch this video a lot? 😅 (I'm mostly joking, I'm not that shallow, but he's still practically unrecognisable!)

Geoff is playing The Caretaker (who apparently has the semi-official name of Silas Crump), who is the groundskeeper for the mansion and its adjacent cemetery, and he is terrified of the undead residents within the manor. He looks like this!

(Geoff, I know you love to call yourself "old [and boring]", but this is ridiculous 🤣)

(Not even 30 seconds into the video yet! Shoutout to anyone who actually reads this whole post!)

Next, we have Lauren, who is playing "The Bride". Apparently there were two iterations of this character in The Haunted Mansion, and I'm not sure which one Lauren is playing, or whether she's going for a mix of both, but here are pictures of the two versions:

The second iteration of The Bride (on the right) is known as Constance Hatchaway (not a typo!), and is one of the figures depicted in the Stretching Room's portraits. Apparently she had a habit of decapitating her husbands with a hatchet (hence the surname), and then stuffing their heads inside of hatboxes as trophies (lovely). According to lore, one of her husbands came into the possession of the manor now known as the Haunted Mansion, which she then inherited after her husband met the same grisly fate as all the previous ones did.

And finally we have Eli, perhaps the most recognisable member in this one, as Alexander Nitrokoff, another figure from the Stretching Portrait Gallery. He looks like this: (and yes, this portrait basically depicts his untimely end. Rip.)

(10/10 casting choice, I must say, and outfit on point as well 👌)

OKAY, we've finally got character lore and introductions out the way, now we can actually get on with the video!

This picture is very similar to the first picture in this post, but I have more things to say about this set up!

One, I love the ghostly visual effects on Lauren, with the glowy ethereal outline of her silhouette, and the slight translucence on her dress! No clue who was responsible for visual effects/editing on this one (it doesn't say in the description, but maybe Layne?)

And 2, correct me if I'm wrong but are Geoff, Layne, and Eli all lit in different ways? Eli has a warm-coloured spotlight on him, Geoff has more of a cool-coloured spotlight on him (I think?), possibly angled different to the light on Eli as well, and as for Layne I'm honestly not sure, but he stands out in a really interesting way. I have a feeling that the lighting on him is such that it makes him look like an actual Haunted Mansion/Disney Parks ride animatronic (especially when combined with deliberate movement/acting choices in the video). Nobody is credited with lighting for this one, but I'll still place a bet on who helped with a lot of it (at the least) anyway!

Absolutely loving Cesar's makeup in this one ngl (I wonder whether he coloured his face and/or hair blue for filming this or if that was just all done via editing?)

Honestly if not for his unmistakable vocal timbre, you could easily not realize this was Geoff at all. Rick did a ridiculously good job of making him (and Layne) look completely unrecognisable! Like is Geoff wearing facial prosthetics or something? His eyebrows look fake, the eyebags look like they were done with more than just regular makeup, and even his cheeks look thinner? Man I really wanna join VP's Patreon at the behind-the-scenes tier! But alas! Money!

You can't have one of your members dress up as the Hatbox Ghost for a Haunted Mansion style video and not feature the character's main "gimmick" of his head moving from his neck to the box that he holds! And well, all things considered, Voiceplay did a pretty decent job of it! (And hey, even Disney themselves struggled with it - the character was removed from the attraction within only a few weeks of the ride's opening, and didn't actually return to the ride until 46 years later, in 2015, for the park's Diamond Anniversary Celebrations!)

Voiceplay are just showing off at this point honestly 😝 (I wonder how long this video was in production for? Seems like it would have been a big project taking at least a full month, if not longer)

Also haven't yet mentioned it but it's cool how the full group shots are shot in a way that makes it look like you're watching this from one of the ridecars (people-movers?) of the Haunted Mansion!

Oh dang I completely forgot about Cesar's/Madame Leota's crystal ball floating up in the air!

And there you have it folks! Maybe not one of my most picture-heavy posts, but quite possibly one of the most text-heavy! Now time for me to not watch this video again until October at the earliest!

Ding dong!

"Akito, go get the door."

Akito sighs in annoyance as he hears his father's voice. Begrudgingly he stands up and leaves his room, dusting off his hoodie as he goes. It was pretty late, who could be at the door at this time of night?

Akito prepares himself to put on his 'nice' persona as he opens the door, but stops immediately once he sees who's there. His heart drops into his stomach and his grip on the door tightens.

You stood in front of him, sobbing quietly and rubbing your eyes, attempting to hide your tears. You were shivering, partially from the tears and partially from the frigid night air.

Akito snaps himself out of the brief shock he felt upon seeing you so distraught and steps forward, pulling you into his arms. You wordlessly cling onto him, seeking the comfort only he can provide. He presses a kiss to the side of your head and caresses your back tenderly. It's a special type of gentleness that only you receive.

Even though the two of you are standing outside, it's the warmest you've felt all night.

Akito eventually speaks up, his voice a low murmur. "Let's go inside."

You nod feebly, allowing him to lead you inside. The moment you catch a glimpse of his room, you feel more at ease. You've been here so many times, and every time, you're treated with nothing but love and kindness. This place is infinitely more comforting to you than the place you should call "home".

Akito sits you down on his bed and tightly wraps a blanket around your shoulders, before sitting down beside you. You instinctively lean against him, causing him to hug you close to his side.

The two of you are quiet momentarily. The only sounds to be heard are the rustling of leaves outside, movement elsewhere within Akito's home, and your quiet, shaky breaths.

Before Akito can say anything, you speak up.

"S-Sorry for, uh, popping up out of n-nowhere," you mutter. "They... I-I mean, I didn't want to, well. Be there. Anymore."

You screw your eyes shut and rub your face, letting out a sigh that sends a shudder through your whole body. When you had rushed out of your home, you hadn't even thought about where you were going. You were just running, and running, and running...

...until you ended up on Akito's doorstep.

Akito snaps you out of your thoughts by resting his cheek on the top of your head. "Don't apologise, seriously. You can always come to me. Especially in a time like this."

He rubs your back. "Do you wanna stay here? While everything's, y'know, calming down."

You lift your head to look at him, which causes him to frown slightly. It's the first time he's seen your face properly tonight. He hates seeing you like this.

"Is... Is that okay?" You ask softly. "I mean, what if your parents aren't find with it?"

He shrugs. "Don't worry about it. My mom likes you, she wouldn't say no to you."

That made you feel a little better, at least. You crack a tiny smile and hide your face in Akito's shoulder again.

"Thanks," you murmur. "Can we stay here, please? For a little while?"

Akito kisses the top of your head. "Of course. I'll always be by your side, 'kay?"

"...Thank you."

It’s also based on a fic I briefly saw where the reader is running through a hospital while Wanda’s chasing them. I forgot who the author is.

“Ding dong I know you can hear me Open up the door I only wanna play a little...”

You’re running on pure adrenaline and fear in this labyrinth that your stalker’s set up. Why did you agree to this?! It was as though something had possessed you, made you believe you could beat her, when you two made the deal.

“Make it out of this labyrinth before I find and trap you, and I’ll let you go.....fail, and you’re mine for all eternity....deal?”

“.....Deal.”

What a tangled web you’ve woven for yourself....

Of course you have some chance, but is it remotely close to possible?

“Only one way to find out....” you pant.

“Ding dong You can't keep me waiting It's already too late For you to try and run away”

You narrowly dodge a spider web trap, scarlet threaded within the sticky silk. You have no clue where she is, but you fear she could pop out at any moment, giving you no chance to run anymore. But screw it, this is your freedom at stake. You’re not going down without at least trying. 

She wasn’t always like this; she was sweet and adoring, affectionate and doting. But her obsession with you brought her out more and more....until she’s practically taken over.

“I see you through the window Our eyes are locked together I can sense your horror Though I'd like to see it closer.”

Your ankle hits against a beam that shot out from the wall and you trip onto the labyrinth floor. The pain reverberates against your jaw, but you bite down on your tongue to keep yourself from crying out. You refuse to give her even the smallest hint of your location.

“Ding dong Here I come to find you Hurry up and run Let's play a little game and have fun.”

Your ankle throbs with searing pain, but you’re not giving up. With trembling arms, you push yourself back up as the beam retracts and continue on. The adrenaline actually mitigates the pain a bit, so you feel some strength. But every single sound is louder than normal.

“One over the other, I guess,” you pant.

“Ding dong Where is it you've gone to? Do you think you've won? Our game of hide and seek has just begun.”

Whoosh!

A blast of scarlet narrowly grazes your shoulder and the adrenaline pumps up big-time; she’s hot on your trail. You pick up the pace, hoping to find a way to throw her off. 

“There’s always a chance....there’s always a chance....”

But are you only deluding yourself?

“I hear your footsteps Thumping loudly through the hallways I can hear your sharp breaths You're not very good at hiding.”

You duck down to avoid another wall beam, this one at neck height. Though she’s promised that it’s not a deadly labyrinth, it sure as hell feels like one. Maybe there’s somewhere you can hide until she passes? No, she’d probably find you. You decide to store that as a last resort option.

“Just wait, you can't hide from me (I'm coming).”

You leap over another scarlet web. 

“Just wait, you can't hide from me (I'm coming).”

You slide underneath a closing vertical door.

“Just wait, you can't hide from me (I'm coming).”

You only just miss the puddle of pitch, colored scarlet of course, her signature color; you might even say it’s her calling card.

“Just wait, you can't hide from me.”

You feel as though you’ve lost all sense of direction, that you’re just running on autopilot. But if it gets you out, you’re not gonna complain.

“Knock knock I am at your door now I am coming in No need for me to ask permission.”

All of a sudden, you feel a breeze to your left; the breeze of the outside world! You’re so close to freedom, freedom from this delusional witch, freedom from being stalked constantly, freedom from her mind games.

“Knock knock I'm inside your room now Where is it you've hid? Our game of hide and seek's about to end.”

You sense her getting closer. Now’s your chance to make a break for it! You dash to your left, your strength pouring in in spades and you practically tearing up in relief. 

“I'm coming closer Looking underneath your bed but”

The breeze is getting stronger. You’re so close, you can almost taste it! Turning the corner, you see the forest in the night and the breeze is now devouring you. And you are more than willing to let it.

“I’ve done it....I’m free....I’m free!”

“You're not there, I wonder Could you be inside the closet?“

BANG!

Your face smacks against something hard and you stumble backwards. You lean against the wall to regain your balance. The breeze has stopped. Stunned you reach out and feel in front of you....it’s a wall.

You were tricked.

“Oh my beloved (y/n)....”

You can feel her voice on your neck.

“Ding dong I have found you.”

You whirl around in horror to spy the one you’ve been so desperate to escape, the one you used to love so dearly, who became someone else; someone obsessive and possessive of those she adores.

The Scarlet Witch.

“Ding dong You were hiding here Now you're it.”

She backs you against the wall, smiling in a twisted loving way.

“Your innocence is so endearing to me....”

“Y-you tricked me...” you stammer out, trembling.

“I’m sorry, (y/n),” she tells you. “But I can’t bear to let you go.”

“Ding dong Finally found you, dear Now you're it.”

She reaches out a hand and gently strokes the side of your face, treating you as though you’re a precious doll made of fragile porcelain. And you might as well be to her. 

“You have no idea as to how much I adore you, how much I love you, how much I worship you; you are the light that keeps me from slipping deep into the darkness, from letting the evil inside of me take over. If I let you go.....if I let you go....no, I don’t even want to imagine it.”

“Ding dong Looks like I have won Now you're it.”

You feel your eyes well up with tears before they pour on your face. Her smile drops and she reaches out, wiping them away softly. 

“Please don’t cry, my little dove....” she whispers. “It hurts me immensely to see tears on that pretty face of yours. I promise I will treat you like the delicate and precious flower you are. My delicate and precious flower. I’ll protect you from anyone and anything that tries to hurt you or take you from me.”

“Ding dong Pay the consequence.”

You see a red glow from her hands, and you know what’s coming.

“It’s time to sleep, my beloved only.....”

She blows on her hand and the wisp snakes into your ear, dancing around your mind, completely opening it to her words. Eyes fluttering, you drop into her arms. She picks you up bridal style before whispering into your ear.

“Tomorrow begins a life of devotion and adoration for us both....you’ll feel affection for me just as deeply as I feel for you, my little dove....now and forever...”

As those words sink into your mind, she gives you a gentle kiss on your head, as if to seal them within. As your eyes flutter shut, a sweet smile appears on your face as love for the Scarlet Witch blossoms like a vibrant rose.

Your fate is sealed for all of eternity.

“Ding dong Looks like I have won Now you're it Ding dong Pay the consequence.”

Voiceplay Visuals: Valhalla Calling

This could be a bit of a long one (though still probably not as long as my post for Hide And Seek/Ding Dong)

Valhalla Calling was released on the 8th of April, 2023, and is kinda-sorta a sister video to My Mother Told Me. But Voiceplay didn't restrict themselves to just standing in front of greenscreen backgrounds this time, no no no! They worked together with some production studios/group called Vū, and usually I give credit shoutouts as I go through the video, but I think it might just be easier this time if I show you the credits in the description instead:

Yeah, this one was massive. (And wow Eli did a lot for this one! Shoutout to Eli!)

Voiceplay didn't see a return of Jose Rosario Jr for this one, but we got J None back for it! Woooo! So anyway, let's get into this!

I will get to everyone individually, but check out the set! I like the shields in the background.

J None! The man, the myth, the legend.

J has got the same kind of rune/symbol on his forehead as he did in My Mother Told Me (I'm using the video thumbnail for MMTM for comparison purposes), but brighter white on his cheeks, and of course a fresh new haircut. His shirt(?)/top is the same as well I believe, but the fur is different to that of his original costume.

Cesar of course didn't join Voiceplay till sometime after My Mother Told Me (fun fact: Valhalla Calling was release just a couple weeks shy of when My Mother Told Me was released, two years' prior), so nothing to compare against, but I love his makeup here!

Appreciation for the visual effects/design!

Geoff has swapped out the grey fur over one shoulder for a brown fur cloak/cape thing, and ditched the purple-ish lipstick he was wearing in My Mother Told Me as well, making him look a bit less terrifying 😝 (also, his hair in this one has a bit more fluff/volume to it (love that for him <3)). He does however have the same/similar tattoo designs on his face that he had in My Mother Told Me.

(Also I know I'm meant to be sticking to just the visuals, but you can't just expect me to talk about Valhalla Calling without talking about the B0 subharmonic that Geoff holds for 15 seconds!!!)

Layne seems to be wearing almost exactly the same (if not the exact same) outfit as he did in My Mother Told Me (see the first screencap above), and the same kind of face designs as well

Eli still has tattoo designs on his head like in My Mother Told Me (though whether they're the same or not I'm not sure), but the makeup around his eyes is darker, and of course, he now has a full beard and mustache! (Very impressive, might I add)

(For someone who is ridiculously modest when talking about himself ("baritone with a bass range" I mean REALLY), Geoff sure knows how to look incredibly smug in videos when he wants to be 😅😂)

Actually scratch what I said about nothing to compare Cesar's outfit against - the cloak he's wearing is the same one (or at least very very similar to) the one that Jose wore in My Mother Told Me!

Also shoutout to Cesar for being able to do literally anything when it comes to characters, acting, and performances! Multifaceted is an understatement honestly (and yes I will be talking about Creep, eventually)

Layne is basically the only one that stuck with basically his whole original outfit. J kept parts of his and still stuck close to the original concept (with the fur and stuff), Eli definitely got an outfit upgrade (though his tunic/shirt is a pretty similar green colour to what he was wearing in MMTM, and Geoff just basically went with a brand new look (Good For Him). He's still got one arm uncovered/exposed like in MMTM, but it's the right arm this time, not the left! (And J none has more of his arms exposed than he originally did!)

Everyone of course gave this performance 110%, and J None absolutely killed it with his original rap solo (hey, it was a visual performance too!), but also look at Geoff, looking like some sort of powerful and intimidating sorcerer while delivering another B0 subharmonic held note!

Also whoops I think I just spotted a minor editing/continuity mistake. See Cesar in the background in the above shot here? With the hood off? Well this is the next frame:

Cesar with the hood still on. I shan't hold it against them (editing this must have been a nightmare, at least partially), but I am here to talk about visuals, and so if I see something of note, then I will mention it!

A very small and very blink-and-you-miss-it eyebrow quirk/raise from Geoff (y'know, just to kill us further 😆)

The original creator of the song, Miracle Of Sound, commented on this video, saying "Well done, lads. Definitely one of the more creative covers I've heard! I rate it ten raised alehorns out of ten." And the video currently sits at 4.2 million views on YouTube, which is pretty dang impressive considering the video isn't even a year old yet (UPDATE: as of the 20th of March, it's now at 4.6 million! Goddamn!)

Incredible video, incredible arrangement, incredible vocals, it's honestly peak Voiceplay (but not Voiceplay at it's peak! They don't have one!). I have a good handful of videos to keep going through, so stay tuned!

These guys love Halloween and all things spoopy, so it's no surprise that this tune made it into their repertoire.

Trivia:

It's no wonder the boys were tired when they recorded this. Not only had they just finished a show, but they were 7 weeks into an 11-week nationwide tour.

VoicePlay did a full studio production video for this song four years later, compelete with Singing Busts prosthetic makeup.

More recently, they have portrayed different characters from The Haunted Mansion in the video for their cover of Hide and Seek (Ding Dong!).
