Addressing Problems vs. Name Calling
There are a lot of people on the internet trying to persuade other people to listen to their opinions by calling other people names—racist, transfobic, homofobic, sexist, to name a few—but is doing this really helping anyone? To be fair, a lot of these people being called those names are, in fact, racist/transfobic/homofobic/sexist/etc., but is calling them that really going to help them change their world view? The expected result might be that the person will crumble once they realize that they’re a nasty racist/transfob/homofob/sexist/etc., but usually when attacked with hostile language they’re more likely to get defensive, dig their heels in, and start arguing about the labels while the important parts of what was said go ignored. Even in the “best case scenario” where they do listen, hate-labels tend to have the effect of shutting down any potential discussion of the topic in the future. Often a person won’t say what they once thought for fear of being called nasty names. They might even spend nights crying in their room because someone told them they’re a bad person, instead of feeling empowered to be better. Labels stick to people, even after they’ve expired, and it’s hard for a person not to feel defined or boxed in by what others say about them.
This isn't definite, of course—some people really do step up in the face of being called out for their bigotry, and those people are certainly worthy of respect--but isn’t there a better way to address problems than resorting to juvenile name calling and click-bait buzz words? Back when I was in English class in Highschool learning how to write argumentative essays, my teacher made a point of telling us to avoid using pronouns such as I or You as much as possible. Why? Because the minute the word “I” is used, it makes an argument just the author’s opinion rather than fact, making it impersonal and unimportant. When “you” is used in an argument, it makes it personal to the person on the other end of the essay. Suddenly it’s no longer an intellectual experiment—now it’s about “you”, and when everything is about “you”, whatever argument the author is presenting becomes a much bigger pill to swallow.
Instead of making an argument for why someone is racist, what if we simply wrote an argument about why people of all races should be treated with respect? What if instead of stating that people are transfobic, we helped people understand why people transition and what sort of struggles they face? What if instead of calling someone homofobic, we told them why same-sex marriages and partnerships are important? What if instead of calling someone sexist, we talked about the strengths of women and their irreplaceable contributions to the world? What if we started lifting instead of tearing down, and instead of laughing at the people in the figurative ditch we got down there and helped them climb out?
I know a lot of people who weren’t homofobic/racist/sexist/transfobic growing up—they just had questions. They asked those questions, with genuine curiosity, and then were told that because they had those questions they were bad people. Almost no one bothered to answer them, or explain to them why their views were incomplete. Instead they shot them down, told them not to have questions, and pretty soon those people I knew started becoming all those things everyone told them they were. It’s normal to have questions, and it’s good to look for answers. Not one person on this earth knows all the answers. None of us are perfect—we’re all just trying to make sense of what’s in front of us. Don’t be the person who stands on a mountain scaled by asking questions only to throw rocks down at others who are trying to make the same climb. Just because they aren’t at the summit yet doesn’t mean they aren’t trying. It’s impossible to know what a person is going through at any given time, or why they think the way they do. Especially when there’s a barrier of a screen and some imperfect walls of text preventing us from seeing the whole picture. Just be kind, be generous, and assume the best of people. Most people want to be right, so just try to help them get there. It will make the world a better place.

re: gatekeeping
i've seen this argument come up again and again across multiple blogs and i feel like it's doing such a disservice to the creative community of this fandom and is worth speaking about (especially considering that some people expressed their reluctance to create in response to the recent events)
and i just wanted to say that YES. no one owns specific scenes. YES. people are allowed to gif the same characters. hell, as far as i've seen this community is incredibly creative and generous, sharing their mods and reshade presets and scenic locations.
to me PERSONALLY, the line is crossed when there's no transparency. when it's a repeated behavior. when there's no respect or regard to your fellow creators or their wishes.
i want to be very clear that this was all brought up in regards to a VERY specific case. a very nuanced case with a lot of context and i don't think it should be used to view the community as a whole.
outside of it and on the bigger scale, this community is full of incredibly skilled and creative individuals. helpful individuals. ones that WANT to inspire and encourage others to create. that share and help and give tips. that support each other. that put a new, exciting spin on 'the same old' game with its limited scenes.
and while, surely, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, i feel like there have been some really thick brushstrokes applied when talking about the bg3 fandom creatives as a whole. and it just doesn't sit right with me.

shelby speaking out about their abuse is hopefully the starting point for the mc streaming community to start being more critical of their creators! yes it's okay to like a streamer and want to support them, but please be wary of how attached you are to these people! why was it that even when other creators were speaking out and had evidence, people were still being like "well, consider..."
we need to be better as a community. at the end of the day, these creators will have no idea what you said, but your mutuals and irl friends will be seeing the creators you support, and what you are willing to turn a blind eye to.
to create a safer and more respectful community, we must hold one another accountable for our actions, even if it is a big streamer, or someone you really look up to.

I hate how hard you have to defend a character’s queerness if it isn’t outright stated. Like this character can be gay in everything but word and people will still deny it

seriously, though. i work in higher education, and part of my job is students sending me transcripts. you'd think the ones who have the least idea how to actually do that would be the older ones, and while sure, they definitely struggle with it, i see it most with the younger students. the teens to early 20s crowd.
very, astonishingly often, they don't know how to work with .pdf documents. i get garbage phone screenshots, sometimes inserted into an excel or word file for who knows what reason, but most often it's just a raw .jpg or other image file.
they definitely either don't know how to use a scanner, don't have access to one, or don't even know where they might go for that (staples and other office supply stores sometimes still have these services, but public libraries always have your back, kids.) so when they have a paper transcript and need to send me a copy electronically, it's just terrible photos at bad angles full of thumbs and text-obscuring shadows.
mind bogglingly frequently, i get cell phone photos of computer screens. they don't know how to take a screenshot on a computer. they don't know the function of the Print Screen button on the keyboard. they don't know how to right click a web page, hit "print", and choose "save as PDF" to produce a full and unbroken capture of the entirety of a webpage.
sometimes they'll just copy the text of a transcript and paste it right into the message of an email. that's if they figure out the difference between the body text portion of the email and the subject line, because quite frankly they often don't.
these are people who in most cases have done at least some college work already, but they have absolutely no clue how to utilize the attachment function in an email, and for some reason they don't consider they could google very quickly for instructions or even videos.
i am not taking a shit on gen z/gen alpha here, i'm really not.
what i am is aghast that they've been so massively failed on so many levels. the education system assumed they were "native" to technology and needed to be taught nothing. their parents assumed the same, or assumed the schools would teach them, or don't know how themselves and are too intimidated to figure it out and teach their kids these skills at home.
they spend hours a day on instagram and tiktok and youtube and etc, so they surely know (this is ridiculous to assume!!!) how to draft a formal email and format the text and what part goes where and what all those damn little symbols means, right? SURELY they're already familiar with every file type under the sun and know how to make use of whatever's salient in a pinch, right???
THEY MUST CERTAINLY know, innately, as one knows how to inhale, how to type in business formatting and formal communication style, how to present themselves in a way that gets them taken seriously by formal institutions, how to appear and be competent in basic/standard digital skills. SURELY. Of course. RIGHT!!!!
it's MADDENING, it's insane, and it's frustrating from the receiving end, but even more frustrating knowing they're stumbling blind out there in the digital spaces of grown-up matters, being dismissed, being considered less intelligent, being talked down to, because every adult and system responsible for them just
ASSUMED they should "just know" or "just figure out" these important things no one ever bothered to teach them, or half the time even introduce the concepts of before asking them to do it, on the spot, with high educational or professional stakes.
kids shouldn't have to supplement their own education like this and get sneered and scoffed at if they don't.

What’s fascinating about this to me is that that’s not my experience at all. I actually found out about this community IRL. There was a new girl at my middle school and we were in an art class together. I barely knew her and at some point she straight up asked “Do you like g/t??”
And I was like “What is that?”
And then she showed me some 2013(?) art by Bonkalore on deviantart- and to this day I don’t know or remember how this girl clocked me as a size fetishist. I was 14 years old and mortified, like, “You TELL PEOPLE about this??????”
I’m so glad she did. Being up-front about your weirdness is a vulnerable way to live and I wouldn’t live any other way now. I don’t post about my day job a lot on here, but I work in the film industry and my stories usually are imbued with g/t elements - and most audiences really don’t pick up on it! It’s very much a “if you know, you know” type situation. If Tarantino can display his foot fetish in the films he directs, what’s wrong with me directing films with size fetish elements?
You feel me?
Anyway, getting off my soapbox now. What I’m saying is: Go forth and be weird!!!!
I just realized if I ever happened to meet somebody irl who told me they’re in the G/t community there would be a high chance they know me online

i’ve seen a lot of posts talking about nimona’s queer messages which is great! but ive not seen as many posts talking analyzing how both ballister and ambrosius were changed to be asian, which is a shame because i genuinely think its one of the most important parts of the film! a huge part of it is a deconstruction of the model minority myth and respectability politics, both of which are big issues in the asian american community. both of them represent each side of the spectrum, with ambrosius expected to be superhuman with very little support and ballister being seen as less than human, no matter how hard he tries- a monster.
ambrosius (who is now east asian, like his voice actor eugene lee yang, who is korean with chinese and japanese ancestry), despite being in a seemingly powerful position as head of the knights and a descendant of gloreth, he isn’t really given the kind of support that this position needs- he’s constantly undermined and belittled by todd, the face of the other knights, and when asked about his emotional state by the director, represses his emotions rather than talk to her about his true feelings. this is very similar to how asian american students in schools aren’t given the support they need academically by teachers and administration, as the model minority myth leads to them being perceived as more intelligent and competent than their fellow students and therefore not needing support. he’s also held to a higher standard than any of the other knights, being immediately placed into a position of power despite just being knighted, again a reflection of the model minority myth, since asian americans are held to higher standards unfairly. despite being technically better off than ballister, he has no support, no friends, no way to seek help for his problems, and, just like ballister, is immediately thrown away the moment the director thinks he’s served his use.
ballister is now pakistani, like his voice actor riz ahmed (no, not like pedro pascal. where did this come from lol), and i’d go as far as to say that he is also, if not explicitly muslim, heavily muslim coded as well. he’s framed as a terrorist by the white, christian institution, and from then on, it doesn’t matter how good he tries to be- everyone else sees him as a monster. he’s also from a lower socioeconomic class than ambrosius and the rest of the knights- while this is initially used to frame him as a success story, after he’s framed, it’s used to cast suspicion on him. almost immediately he’s othered, with posters casting him as a foreign invader sent to destabilize the city, much in the same way that muslim immigrants are seen in real life. even when he tries to be peaceful and good, it’s always twisted so that he’s the monster of the story. while ambrosius is held to too high of a standard, ballister will never be enough for the institution to accept.
which is why both of their arcs culminate in them breaking out of the system, learning to accept what they’d been taught was monstrous, and leaving behind respectability. it’s a genuinely great commentary, and i can definitely see why riz ahmed and eugene lee yang were chosen for this, as they’ve both done activist work for their communities.

gojo likes to tell everyone he’s a man of refined taste—wine, whiskey, the occasional fruity cocktail if he’s feeling fun. but beer? beer is where he draws the line. it tastes like piss, he says, and with the confidence of a man who’s actually done a side-by-side comparison. if you hand him a beer, he’ll take one whiff, gag dramatically, and proclaim that his standards are higher than this pedestrian swill.
nanami, on the other hand, has a history with beer. a dark, haunting history, the kind that leaves a man waking up in a random dorm bathroom with marker scribbles all over his face and no recollection of how he got there. he leaves beer in the past, along with his reckless university days. nowadays, if you so much as mention beer around him, he’ll sigh deeply, adjust his tie, and mutter something about how he's an adult with responsibilities now. no, he will not shotgun a beer with you. no, he will not “just take a sip.” he knows where that road leads, and he refuses to walk it again.
toji doesn’t drink beer either, but for entirely different reasons. it's not that he dislikes the taste—it's that he sees dollar signs instead. turns out, there’s a niche art community that loves decorating beer cans and selling them at exhibitions, and toji, ever the entrepreneur, has made a lucrative side hustle out of collecting them and selling them off. he doesn’t drink the beer inside, though. he finds the smell repulsive, the mere thought of it enough to make his stomach turn. but if some rich art kid wants to buy a can he found on the street for triple the price? that’s just good business.
geto likes to act like he’s above beer. too classy. too refined. too elegant to be seen drinking from a can like some common fool. but the moment someone offers it to him—especially in a fancy glass—he’ll take it. because if he’s drinking it out of an expensive glass, it’s not really beer anymore, it’s an experience. he swirls it like it's wine, sniffs it like he's judging its aroma, and takes slow, measured sips like he's contemplating the meaning of life. it’s all about appearances, after all.
choso is still figuring out alcohol. he’s trying his best, okay? beer is the only thing he can kind of handle because it doesn't hit him like a freight train immediately. but then it does. he always starts out okay, sipping cautiously, nodding along like he understands the appeal. then, somewhere along the line, his eyes glaze over, he starts slurring his words, and suddenly he’s lying on the couch, mumbling about the stars and how they’re actually just really old ghosts watching us.
sukuna takes offense to the very existence of beer. you handed him a can of beer once at your birthday party, and he looked at you like you’d personally spat in his face. then he turned to the unfortunate soul who had dared to offer it to him and, in a voice dripping with malice, said, “i should piss in this and hand it back to you. see if you can tell the difference.” the guy practically evaporated on the spot. nobody has ever offered sukuna beer since.

7th Ruler in Houses 💞
1st House
There may be hesitation to act in some of your endeavors. Perhaps you are too dependent on the opinions of others. You form relationships easily and in a straightforward way, but your close friends, partners or spouse may have very strong influence on your personality and actions. Your spouse may be a person whom you have known since childhood, and you are very close.
2nd House
You are attracted to people who are knowledgeable and intelligent, and you may gain considerably from such an association. You may have the tendency to procrastinate. Marriage might be a source or give opportunities for successful financial ventures, or your spouse may simply be quite wealthy. The area of finances could still prove a challenge in your marriage, and there is a chance of more than one marriage.
3rd House
You may seek out partnerships in people who are very enterprising and have a good initiative. The individuals of the opposite sex that you get attracted to have this quality too, they may be very skillful, crafty and possess artistic abilities. Although they may present opportunities for higher learning and understanding there is a good chance of a difficulty in marriage, as well as difficulty in getting children.
4th House
You are likely to be attracted to people who give you comfort and security. You like truthful interactions, and you are loyal to your friends and relatives, cherishing good moral values and religious standards. Your spouse might be quite independent and career oriented.
5th House
You are quite romantic and you will seek a partner who is honorable, knowledgeable and well respected. With your marriage many opportunities will open up for you. Your children will be successful and enterprising, but you might find it hard to penetrate into the heart of you spouse's family.
6th House
People with problems, mental, physical or both, hold a certain attraction to you. This is one of the things you, either consciously or unknowingly, look for in others. Therefore, you might be quite concerned with solving other people's problems. The spouse you'll eventually attract might add an additional layer of complexity in your life and there might be a great deal of confusion in your communication. If both of you would take the attitude of a self-less service towards each other things might develop more positively.
7th House
You put great deal of emphasis of relationships in your life. In marriage you would like your spouse to be as devoted to you as you are to him/her. Your spouse is likely to be very wholesome, healthy and powerful. Your marriage is likely to be a happy one.
8th House
There may be a tendency in you for keeping your relationships a secret or you may seek out partners in secretive places, or where secrecy is in the air. Relationships may constantly need to go through a number of challenges obstacles and transformations. Therefore, a loss of a partner, by death or divorce is quite possible. However, the compensations for the loss might be good.
9th House
You seek out and are attracted to knowledgeable, scholarly and virtuous people. Relationships will always be a great source of experience and knowledge in your life and your will meet a wide range of people. Your spouse is likely to be highly educated and enterprising.
10th House:
You have affinity towards powerful and career oriented individuals. It is quite likely that you meet your spouse in a workplace and the marriage could be quite oriented around work, status, success and reputation. Your spouse could be a great help in enhancing your career. You are likely to get close to your spouse's family.
11th House
You like open and optimistic people that open up to you the world of possibilities and opportunities. Therefore, you are likely to gain well financially from your partnerships. You like playful romantic adventures, and your marriage will be a happy one.
12th House
You may seek out and get attracted to persons who are unusual in some way or come from a place very different from yours. There is quite possible that you will experience a loss in relationship, perhaps due to confusion or dullness of some sort, or because your world was so alien to the spouse, and vice versa. The lesson here might be selfless and sincere service in the relationship.
