5 YouTube Channels Homeschool Families Simply MUST Check Out
This Week's Curated Content is All About Some Really Dope (read: Interesting, Informative, and Generally Accurate) YOUTUBE Channels that Homeschooling Families (or Classroom Teachers) Can Use to Support Their Homeschool Curriculum.
(Looking for Podcast Suggestions to Supplement Your Homeschooling or Classroom Curriculum? Say Less! Check Out This Post Filled With Educational Podcast Recommendations.)
Tumblr media
MELANATED AND WELL-EDUCATED
New and Confused Homeschool Families Start Here! Talk about user-friendly. This channel is the perfect go-to site, especially for new homeschooling families.
The presenter, Erica, is well-informed and speaks with the benefit of first hand experience. She also podcasts, blogs, and vlogs (or something like that 😃) so you can consume her content in various ways.
Tumblr media
ThisBrownTeacher's Hot Take: It's a GO for Me.
These videos are clean! The recording and formatting is so well done. And getting insight from someone who's actually DOING what you're doing ... well, well, well ... you gotta love it when a great plan comes together.
Tumblr media
CRASH COURSE
Crash Course is a YouTube channel filled with science, social science, and historical content presented in fun, usually a mix of real people and animated clips.
Agreeing that the site is witty and fast-paced, CommonSense.org and other commenters are seemingly thrown off by the word 'course' in the channels moniker. CommonSense.org gives Crash Course a rating of 3 out 5 stars, deciding that anything labeled a "course" should be interactive and offer opportunities for students to "engage" with the content - something they claim Crash Course does not necessarily do.
Tumblr media
ThisBrownTeacher's Hot Take: Check it out. 👍🏾
Sometimes a video is just that ... a video. And most homeschooling or traditional school teachers will add their own spin on information curated from the internet regardless. The content is better suited toward older learners and families should preview the content first to ensure that all topic matter is copacetic.
Tumblr media
THE HANDMADE HOMESCHOOLER
With shoutouts to the "Homeschool Haters" (facts 😉) and videos titled THINGS I WON'T DO AS A HOMESCHOOL MOM and 6 THINGS I DON'T DO AS A HOMESCHOOL MOM, you know you are about to get the real-deal-truth-ruth when it comes to homeschooling. Mandy's channel -THE HANDMADE HOMESCHOOLER- is truly an internet fav. Plus, she runs a free Facebook Group and, even though I, personally, don't rock with a whole bunch of extraneous and miscellaneous purchases and fees related to homeschooling, if you need some early guidance, this channel has curriculum and other resources for preschool and upper grades at the ready.
Tumblr media
ThisBrownTeacher's Hot Take: Yes, Please! 💯
Besides the cute, little YouTube Shorts she does, as a classroom teacher, I REALLY appreciate The Handmade Homeschooler's approach to HS prep and organization. She seems to backwards plan and Year-At-A-Glance prep like the most veteran of school teachers. Her content is interesting and informative. And definitely the place to go for real talk, organization, preparation, and subject based ideas and information.
Tumblr media
ART FOR KIDS HUB
Art for Kids Hub is a great look for all homeschooling families because:
The channel is actually created and hosted by an actual family. With kids. Doing art.
Most of the projects are easy, uncomplicated, and do not require a bunch of supplies or skills. In most cases, pencils and perhaps crayons or markers will suffice.
My boy loves this channel for all of the cool HOW TO DRAW ... videos that provide easy to understand, step-by-step techniques for drawing everything from ants to a slice of lemon pie.
Tumblr media
ThisBrownTeacher's Hot Take: For sure! For sure! 👌🏾
While some of the drawing tutorials or subject matter (Bugatti anyone?) may frustrated younger or easily frustrated children, pre-viewing and pre-selecting a drawing or two you know your homeschooler can handle is the perfect addition to your Art or Creativity curriculum. For sure!
Tumblr media
Real Life Lore
What's cool about the Real Life Lore YouTube channel is, by far, the ... LORE! Featuring titles such as What's the Deepest Hole We Can Possible Dig? This channel is chock full of subject matter based topics that are arranged in way that makes what could be somewhat dry content (digging holes ... huh?) really engaging for elementary aged homeschoolers and up. Filled with science and history/social studies heavy themes, from comprehension questions, essays, drawings, map quests, experiments, and more, your learner can successfully interact with this content in so many ways and have fun doing it.
Tumblr media
ThisBrownTeacher's Hot Take: For sure! Say less. ✅
Top Fuel Dragsters Visualized and Telling Time on Mars. Sheesh. Say less.

I hate hate hate functioning labels!!
For “high functioning autistics” it denies them the support and access to resources they need. So when they’re looking for accommodations to help them function they’re denied this and therefore cannot access or have limited access.
And for “low functioning” autistics it denies them the opportunity to function without any support without people hailing them as heroes and inspiration porn, therefore denies NTs to perceive them as human.
I prefer the term support needs, e.g. low support needs and high support needs (yeah I know still a label but I feel like sometimes things need labels). I generally have low support needs as there are times, when things are going right or I’m happy, that I need no support at all, but this label still gives me access to the support I need.
The reason why I love this label is I can change it to suit the occasion, as I’ll have higher support needs or lower support needs depending on where I am, who I’m with, what’s happening etc.
Thoughts?

would be nice with a cute and happy (and gay) manga with a mc being a girl with a (canon) neuropsychiatric disability
like i just went through the entire disability tag on dynasty and it’s all physical disabilities and it’s good that such representation exists but like it would be nice to have like an autistic character or one with explicit canonical ADHD or something for once

I hope the new diagnosis is helpful or gives you peace of mind /gen. Though I'm surprised they called it asperger's since that was removed from the dsm in 2013 and strictly speaking isn't a diagnosis anymore(its just ASD: Autism Spectrum Disorder).
Thank you anon!
I know the description is old, and the doctor does as well. But he is also aware that that is what it had been called, once, and I pointed out that the first hint that I might be autistic already came about when I was a kid, and then, the description was still in use, and used for ME. So I suppose he only used it for my sake, to confirm something long-coming. He informed me it is all a spectrum now, and if anything would be categorized as „highfunctional autism“ if even that

HOMESCHOOLING VERSUS TRADITIONAL SCHOOLING: Part One
Tumblr media
Homeschooling is beneficial and appropriate for many families and is a decision that should be made on an individual basis.
Yet, for whatever reason, with some in the traditional school community, the question of homeschool VERSUS traditional school continuously seems to rear its unwelcome little head.
Here, then, is where I find it appropriate to note that if you've had a successful traditional [public/private] school experience and subsequently came out of that experience not only well-rounded and well-educated but also appropriately socialized [no bullying, plenty of substantial friendships that enhanced both your life and your wellbeing], and full of not only book knowledge and suitable life skills, but also beneficial social and emotional learning - Congratulations. Now go forth and conquer because You Certainly Did That! Traditional School was (obviously) the proper educational solution for you and your family. High-Five! 🖐🏾
Only with some in the traditional school community does the question of homeschool VERSUS traditional school ever seem to rear its unwelcome little head.
But here is where you must also recognize that just as the decisions for your family are your business, so too are the decisions of families who choose to pursue educational solutions that perhaps differ from yours. In a nutshell, it should be understood, that while the choice to homeschool is someone's business it just so happens that that business is not yours.
Tumblr media
Homeschooling is regulated in every state. In some states, homeschooled families are regulated and observed far more than teachers in traditional school classrooms. (Ask me how I know). And this overused, recycled list of so-called relevant "homeschool-centric issues" are not now nor have they ever been exclusive only to homeschooling.
Appropriate Socialization?
I wonder if the boy whom nobody ever plays with agrees that all public school socialization is correct and appropriate?
Meaningful Friendships and Relationships?
Let's consider if the teenage girl who cries every night and is beginning to make unwise social decisions because she feels that she can never match up to the "cool" girls believes this to be so.
Mandatory Reporting? Overlooked Abuse?
The child who STILL gets smacked around every night, covers the bruises with a sweatshirt (that no teacher ever asks about) every day, and practically starves every weekend begs to differ.
Relevant Curriculum and Teaching?
Check the Yelp or Google listings of many traditional (particularly public) schools or sift your way through the Facebook posts filled with distressed parents and guardians uncomfortable not only with what their children are being taught but also dissatisfied with the experience level or attitudes of the teachers interacting with their children on a daily basis for proof of the fallacy inherent in this "all teachers are good teachers" misnomer.
On this issue then, it is important that we all, on both sides, are explicitly clear. When it comes to the education of children, this isn't some type of cage match. It's a personal decision, individualistic to each family and the child they are tasked to raise and protect.
And as it relates to the question of homeschool or traditional school then, I'd advise that those with alternative opinions (on either side) quit attempting to argue the issue with each other and, instead, go argue this topic with their therapist or their mother. Respectfully.

Red Flag Words when discussing Autism
A quick (probably not comprehensive) list of words that raise red flags when people use them while discussing Autism. These aren't quite dog whistles because they're often not used knowing the full implications or with mal intent. But I think it's still important to talk about them.
Cure: There is not and never will be a cure for Autism. Autism is a neurotype, meaning it's just the way some people's brains are. No amount of research will change that. Modern day "cure" research goes towards prenatal detection of Autism. Simply put, it's eugenics.
Highfunctioning/Lowfunctioning: Autism is a spectrum and not a scale. The functioning labels only serve to separate Autistics into categories based on how useful their traits are for neurotypical society. It's a system literally developed by a man named Hans Asperger who worked with Nazis. At the time, Autistics who were deemed low functioning were murdered. To this day "low functioning" Autistics are afforded fewer human rights than "high functioning" Autistics. The 'support needs' labels are more helpful and less harmful, but in general Autistics' needs should be assessed and provided for on an individual level. Any attempt at categorization will lead to needs not being met and division in the community.
Asperger's/Asperger's Syndrome: This is an outdated diagnosis for "high functioning" Autistics. It has all the same problems as above but with the addition of being named after a man who murdered Autistics. All around Bad.
Same Food: another outdated term. This one isn't terrible and honestly I myself only discovered the alternative 'Safe Food' (i'm an old Autistic ok, sue me). the term 'Safe Food' normalizes Autistic behaviors, because it shows it's about the food being something safe for us to lean on rather than just a "weird" habit.
Idiot Savant: both a term an outdated trope. I myself use the term idiot savant to refer to the trope because I don't want to soften media that is putting forth harmful, stereotypical, representation. When referring to actual people, however, the term 'Savant Syndrome' should be used instead for obvious reasons.
Starchild: This one is a big red flag. Not everyone who uses it knows its relation to white supremacy but it's the beginning of a pipeline so tread carefully. In general any reference to Autistic people being superior to other neurotypes (that's not a joke) is a red flag. Sometimes it's out of frustration but it's also part of an alt-right movement.
Differently Abled/Super powers/etc: Patronizing as all hell. Autistic people are no more or less capable than other neurotypes. Just treat as normal people, because we are.
Puzzle Piece and Autism Speaks: Autism Speaks is an Autism hate group. They spread negative propaganda about people with Autism and have worked with people who have talked on camera about killing their Autistic children. They also take donations under false pretenses, with pretty much none of it going to actually help Autistics and their families. The puzzle piece is the symbol of Autism Speaks which is bad enough on its own but it also symbolizes the "missing piece" which implies Autistics are incomplete.

Additional disorders and conditions with Autism
Hello Folks,
there I am with a new post about the Autism-Spectrum-Disorder. This time with a special post including experiences by other  too.
Today I’ll talk with you about the several different diseases people with the Autism-Spectrum-Disorder have to deal with in addition. And as in every other post of me this post is all about each single person who told me about these things. Not every autistic person got the same following additonal diseases, yet there are many of them having the same disease in common. I’m not talking about one or two people having disorders etc. besides their Autism. I am talking about srsly at least 10 people who told me and confirmed that they suffer because of following conditions too. And after talking with these people about it for a longer time I figured out that autistic people usually suffer of other diseases because of their, in general, special condition. Let’s start the topic so that you know what I mean.
1st Depressions: Autistic people often suffer because of depressions. It is a disease which appears srsly often, not only with autistic people but also with people without an Autism diagnosis.
Autistic people (A-typical, Aspergers, Kanners, Highfunctional etc.) often become depressive because of their “different being” and “odd behavior” which seems strange to other people and makes Autists feel incredibly bad and lonely. Especially at school, in childhood or as a teenager, people who hardly know a thing about Autism find autistic people odd and do hesitate to get to know them as well as people with Autism got issues with even getting in contact with their class-mates, even tho they’re the same age. All I personally learned is that children and teenagers can be rude sometimes. These young people are seeking for a group to belong to, for friendships and contacts or a membership in a certain group so that children or teenagers (without knowing the consequences for their behavior) tend to bully people who seem different than others. This is unfortunately because the influence of other kids at school seems stronger sometimes than the own social moral. So people who are different, like autistic people, often get bullied or at least  by their class-mates which causes Depressions pretty easily. I am one of these bully victims too. So I know that this is the sad truth.
2nd Borderline: By watching people with autism you can probably tell that having autism, having this different kind of view about life, is kinda similar to a borderline disorder. Autistic people tend to get a so-called ‘melt-down’ (an extrem kind of overload and mental break down) which makes them often hurt themselves (self-harm). Hitting and biting themselves is for example what happens the most when these people are having a mental break down. Also most autistic people do only have either a black or white “sight”, things are either very bad or very good. There is hardly something in between. In addition people with autism are getting angry and stressed much more often than other people, which is also one of the symptomes for Borderline. Talking to other affected these people also confirmed to have a borderline diagnosis in addition because their behavior and symptomes do not always appear with Aspergers (o.e.). Yet many of them do have it: Asking in a post in a facebookgroup I had about 30 replies, 10 of them told about their borderline disorder. I’ve probably got it too but I have no official diagnosis.
3rd Mutism: Probably you’ve heard about it. It is a condition which makes people mute. They do not talk to anybody and sometimes they don’t talk at all. In some cases these people talk to only special people with a special meaning in their lifes but most of the time people with Mutism suffer from not being able to talk at all. That doesn’t mean that they are literally mute. These people just can’t say a thing and struggle with letting a single sound out, even tho they know they could and even tho they’d really like to.
4th Marfan Syndrome: “a genetic disorder that affects the connective tissue.[1] Those with the condition tend to be tall and thin, with long arms, legs, fingers, and toes.[1] They also typically have overly-flexible joints and scoliosis.[1] The most serious complications involve the heart and aorta, with an increased risk of mitral valve prolapse and aortic aneurysm.[1][5] The lungs, eyes, bones, and the covering of the spinal cord are also commonly affected.[1] The severity of the symptoms of MFS is variable.[1] “ (source: Wikipedia) I needed to copy and paste the definition of this disorder because I have NEVER EVER heard of it before!
5th Irritable bowel syndrome: A widespread condition involving recurrent abdominal pain and diarrhea or constipation, often associated with stress, depression, anxiety, or previous intestinal infection. As I have already told you on the top autistic people tend to depressions and anxiety. In other posts I also told you that these people tend to get stressed pretty easily and also often which is the reason why those people suffer of horrbile pain in their stomach. I have also read in the internet that medicals once examined feces by different people who suffered from these issues and many of these people had an Autism diagnosis. Also I do often suffer of horrible pain and long sit ins on the toilet, really often in combination with hard sweating and feeling sick most of the time. I have thought that I might have an intolerance to lactose or else for a quite long time... until I had days without any kind of stress and I had no sort of pain during these moments of peace.
6th High sensitivity: As I have already mentioned people with Autism are mostly high sensitive. They smell, hear and feel things much more extreme than other people which is why they often need sun glasses ot noise-canceling-headphones to survive and make the day. Not every autistic person is that sensitive tho. Some are even good at dealing with these stimulations. Yet it is a disorder or disease most of these people suffer from.
7th Giftedness: You might think “Wait a minute, what is so bad in being gifted and super smart?” Well, a lot. Have you ever felt so unchallenged that it almost makes you depressive? Have you ever made experiences with people who are jealous on your gift and hating you for only that so that they tend to bully you? Have you ever felt upset and also depressive because you know what exactly is going wrong in the world while other people hardly think of it and focus on other things you can’t focus on because they literally bore you to hell? Have you ever had problems with finding a perfect job because even the most interesting and difficult job seems to easy for you? And have you ever felt lonely not (only) because you are different but also because there are hardly people you could talk with about tricky things and every normal conversation freaks you out because you find it dumb?
Those are conditions I know and heard of, there are much more for sure. Idk what you think but I think it is incredible to see what kind of conditions other conditions can bring. Maybe you recognize yourselves in this, if so: Let me know, as always!
