joint headcanon: Melissa & Daigo’s children applicable for interactions with @sixthxchairman in their main verse spanning over the course of all Yakuza/RGG entries. While Dawn and I have discussed the kids a lot but never in a specific post, I just decided to make them lazy moodboards and note down their main characteristics (and yes, there is a reason each one of them has a plushie). Just in time for mother’s day! :)
Kazuya Dojima (JP: Dojima Kazuya ; 堂島 和也), born January 10, 2022. Adult faceclaim: Dori Sakurada (JP: Sakurada Dori ; 桜田 通).
Kazuya is the first child of the Dojima family and takes after Daigo in a way that has always stunned close friends and relatives. Always taller than average for his age, with the same deep and dark eyes that Daigo has and with long and uncontrollable hair growing up, Kazuya was a strangely calm baby and turned into a more reserved, timid adult - he enjoys his own company a lot, definitely picked up his fashion style after Daigo’s gang leader years (including the marshmallow coat) and despite the reputation of a ‘lone wolf’ during school years, he is the sweetest boy ever and also the level-headed/responsible one.
The oldest of the Dojima kids never had any trouble with grades in school and has a great affinity for music (both songwriting and playing, but not singing - that’s the girls’ thing). He was always very fascinated by Junichiro and Majima since he a young age (which led to some interesting babysitting stories), and grew to be really close to one of Melissa’s younger sisters, Rose (who shares a lot of personality traits with him). Kazuya doesn’t care for Christmas considering how close to his birthday it is (and the shortage of gifts it caused when he was younger), and he is not so secretly ashamed of all the baby pictures in Christmas-themed accessories.
True to his aesthetics, Kazuya turned out to be a huge fan of terror/suspense/slasher movies much to Daigo’s dismay, and consequently the type of young man who would rather die than have his childish fears being divulged publicly (aka the fact he couldn’t sleep without his favorite plushies, which included a snake, a red dinosaur and a swan). He is also the first person to groan and get embarrassed when his parents become infuriatingly sweet with each other in the same room with him - which is a more frequent occasion than he would have liked for it to be.
Tumblr media
Hikari Dojima (JP: Dojima Hikari ; 堂島 光), born July 27, 2024. Adult faceclaim: Mirei Kiritani (JP: Kiritani Mirei ; 桐谷 美玲).
Hikari is the Dojima princess - since a very young age, Hikari has always displayed a much more bubbly energy and was fast to learn all the right ways to draw attention from her family and friends, as well as strangers (if there was some benefit to be had in doing so). A lover of all things feminine, cute and sparkly, Hikari always adored being doted on by her grandparents and inherited Melissa’s ability to capitalize on her innocent, sweet face to pull off a lot of mischief, becoming incredibly popular by doing so (nine out of ten times, people will assume her older brother did the thing).
Similarly to Melissa, mother and daughter share a passion for a lot of hobbies, such as singing, creating elaborate costumes and going over-the-top for celebrations of any seasonal holidays. Hikari is also someone very attached to friends and frequently needs to socialize in order to feel happy and complete - a stark contrast to Kazuya’s loner nature. She was always part of the popular cliques at school, and the idea of any friends of hers crushing and/or liking her brother has always mystified Hikari.
As much as Hikari embraces the ‘princess’ label and dresses as such, she is not a fragile damsel by any means - she loves subverting expectations (just as Melissa does) by sitting through horror movies without a scream, being surprisingly at ease when needing to lie and overall having a fearless personality in the face of danger. She would probably consider a serious career in acting - after all, except for her brother, parents and a few select relatives, she’s capable of fooling almost everyone and have them doing her bidding. Her favorite plushie as a kid - a tiger - was a gift from Saejima, one of her favorite uncles in the family.

Like a Dragon Includes Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima as Final Fantasy Summons, a Pokemon Parody Sidequest, And More
December 30, 2019 9:58 AM EST
New details on Yakuza: Like a Dragon, including a new trailer and gameplay, new cast video interviews, returning characters, the dungeons, the battle arena, DLC-only Jobs.
Sega published a new gameplay trailer, details, and screenshots for Yakuza: Like a Dragon, most notably revealing both Kazuma Kiryu and Majima Goro can be unlocked as Delivery Help, the game’s Final Fantasy-like summon system titled after Delivery Health. The details include information on the game’s new and returning characters, the battle arena, the DLC only Jobs, some sidequests and dungeons. Lastly, we also learned Yakuza: Like a Dragon includes a Pokemon parody sidequest with how you need to beat up 252 different types of bad guys called Sujimon to complete your Sujidex.
youtube
The trailer starts by introducing each of the seven party members in the game, Ichiban Kasuga, Kouchi Adachi, Namba, Saeko Mukouda, Joon-gi Han, Tianyou Zhao, and Eri Kamataki, along with the classic RPG roles they can fulfill depending on their various Jobs. Protagonist Ichiban Kasuga is the center of the party, and if he dies, you’ll immediately lose the battle and half of your money, as if mixing Persona and Dragon Quest together. New Jobs can be unlocked by studying and passing exams. The exams each have various themes, from sports trivia to questions related to other Sega franchises. You can also unlock certain jobs via sidequests.
It’s important to note two jobs have been confirmed to be paid DLC only. We have the male-character only Akuma job, which uses a guitar to fight and is dressed like a visual metal band member. And we have the female-only job Anego, which uses a naginata and machine guns, focusing on long-range and AOE attacks.
As we already know, the story starts in Isezaki Ijinchou in Yokohama, and Kamurocho in Tokyo will be accessible at some point. The trailer also reveals Sotenbori in Osaka will also be one of the maps in the game, for a total of three huge cities to explore.
Another element the trailer touches upon we haven’t seen much until now is how you can upgrade weapons and equipment with materials you’ll find around the cities, through sidequests or mini-games.
The last part of the trailer shows the various mini-games like darts, karaoke, girls bars, the Dragon Kart, the can-gathering minigame, and the Management Mode. The latter requires Ichiban to recruit employees, complete various deals and lead the company to become the biggest corporation in Yokohama. This mode is available pretty early in the game, and you’ll need to progress through it to unlock Eri as a party member.
Toshihiro Nagoshi mentioned a few days how besides Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima, Taiga Saejima and Daigo Dojima are also among the returning characters. The trailer and screenshots show part of their summon animation, confirming all four will be among the Delivery Help characters.
New screenshots published by Famitsu also detail the boss fight against Kiryu, Majima and Saejima. Kiryu actually uses his different fighting styles from past games. Majima and Saejima will be fought at the same time. While it wasn’t confirmed yet, it’s highly implied that managing to defeat them in battle is how you’ll unlock them as summons.
Next, Sega published official profiles and screenshots for certain important characters of the game. We first have Ryo Aoki, who was heavily implied in the previous trailer to be the true villain of the game. Ryo Aoki is the current governor of Tokyo, in the past, he was called Masato Arakawa and was like a brother to Ichiban, but he was supposed to be dead. After being elected as governor, becoming the youngest governor of Tokyo in history, he enacted the “Kamurocho 3K plan” which led to the destruction of the Tojo Clan. He’s also the founder of political party Bleach Japan and is the big favorite to be the next Prime Minister. He’s acted by Kōsuke Toriumi.
Next, we have Ogasawara Hajime, the current boss of Bleach Japan and the second founder of the party with Ryo Aoki. He’s acted by Tarusuke Shingaki.
Up next is Kume Sota, the director of the Yokohama branch of Bleach Japan. He’s a dangerous individual who’d do anything for the party and strongly supports its ideal of “bleaching the gray zone of entertainment shops”. He’s acted by Daisuke Hirakawa.
As a reminder, Bleach Japan claims many entertainment businesses in Japan are in a gray area and violate the Fueiho, the “Businesses Affecting Public Morals Regulation Act” law. This law exists in real life and regulates businesses like cabarets, host and hostess clubs, and sex industry-related businesses like soaplands.
We also have new info on the dungeons of the game, which are areas filled with dangerous people like certain homeless or sick people. These have treasure chests and a boss in their innermost part. Certain dungeons will also be unlocked with sidequests. Three more sidequests in the game were revealed, one involving an animal circus, one about searching for a black market weapons dealer, and one about a professor developing a giant automated city-cleaning robot.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon also includes a battle Arena made of 30 floors, with each floor having different rules and restrictions. No screenshots showing the Battle Arena were published yet, however.
We also learned Yakuza: Like a Dragon has a Pokemon-parodying sidequest, called Sujimon. Early in the game, Ichiban and friends will meet Doctor Sujimon, who is developing a mobile app encyclopedia to gather info on various dangerous people, the Sujimon. There are 252 different Sujimon in the game, and Kasuga gotta fight them all to complete his Sujidex. The first time we meet with Doctor Sujimon, we’ll also be asked to fight a green Sujimon, a red Sujimon, and a blue Sujimon, to test out the Sujimon app.
youtube
Sega also published a video interview with Nobuhiko Okamoto, the seiyuu of party member Tianyou Zhao. When Nobuhiko Okamoto was contacted for the role, he was pretty shocked to see he’s voicing a Chinese mafia boss, as it’s pretty different than all roles he did in the past. Tianyou is the kind of character who’s pretty calm but can suddenly start going really crazy. He’s also using various Chinese martial arts so Okamoto was pretty happy to voice a character who’s pretty much a Kungfu movie protagonist.
youtube
A video interview with Eri Kamataki was also published. Eri Kamataki won the actress audition for Yakuza: Like a Dragon, she acts herself in the game and also handled the motion capture for Saeko. In the interview, she mentions she was quite nervous during the audition and was really surprised when she ended up winning. She mentioned her version in the game has a slightly cuter personality than how she is in real life. In-game, she’s the boss of a company, but she’s too nice for the role and ends up getting deceived by bad guys. That’s when Kasuga helps her and they try to save the company together, triggering the game’s Management Mode. Yakuza: Like a Dragon was also Eri Kamataki’s first time voicing battle scenes, and she ended up redoing certain lines many times, but she had a lot of fun recording and acting for the game.
It’s important to note the finalists of the actress audition, Iroha Yanagi, Sumire Sawa, Manae Miyakoshi, and Ririka, will also appear in-game as NPC characters in sidequests.
Lastly, Sega published two gameplay videos. The videos feature Game Director Horii and Producer Masayoshi Yokoyama playing the game, with comments from some of the game’s cast:  Kazuhiro Nakaya/Ichiban, Yuichi Nakamura/Joon-gi, Eri Kamataki, and Iroha Yanagi. At the end of the second video, Kazuhiro Nakaya/Ichiban and Yuichi Nakamura/Joon-gi also try out the in-game quiz. Nakamura does the Sega related quiz and it includes questions such as “In Sakura Taisen, what is the name of the squad Sakura Shinguji is part of?”. It’s pretty fun to watch if you’re a seiyuu fan. You can find both videos below.
You can catch the latest live gameplay here. You can also check out our playthrough of the demo and how I explained rather than the RPG change, the overall wacky feel of the battles is what might alienate old fans of the franchise.
PS4 exclusive Yakuza: Like a Dragon is titled Ryu Ga Gotoku 7 Hikari to Yami no Yukue in Japan and will launch there on January 16. The game will come west later in 2020.

fatal flaws  :
EMMA  ―  she gets too much going on at once and has difficulty balancing it all. most of the time, this comes as a result of taking on more commitments than she can handle. she loves helping others. because of this, she says ‘ yes ’ to fulfilling their wishes before considering what is already on her plate.
MADE  ―  perfectionism. if something isn’t exactly how she wants it, she’ll spend hours trying to correct it. the standards she imposes on her personal life and work are therefore demanding ( or downright impossible ). it’s important to remind her that she’s only human, and there’s a limit to what she can control.
NIRAN  ―  biting first. even though his family has helped him unlearn a good deal of the very unhealthy coping mechanisms he gained from his traumatic childhood, he still believes that the world is a wild and terrible place at heart. dog eat dog and all that. thusly, he refuses to trust people outside of his family circle and snaps easily at new faces.
HIKARI  ―  temper. it’s no stretch to say that she inherited her father’s anger, and she does not respond well to being refused something without sufficient reason. though she can usually keep this private, it does occasionally spill over to the public eye in terms of excessive pride ; pouting ; or rolling her eyes.
KAZUYA  ―  self - isolation. solitude is healthy. locking yourself away for months to escape social pressure is not. he struggles greatly with balancing a very introverted personality and demanding life. when he tips toward the extreme, he will immediately abscond to somewhere quiet with books and talk as little as possible.

hikari dojima was born during one of the fiercest summer thunderstorms that kamurocho had seen in recent memory ( or, so her father said, but his statement was given credibility by him having lived in the district his entire life ). the dojimas arrived at the hospital early in melissa’s labor in light of the brewing weather. both parents commented often on the bright streaks of lightning past the window. as melissa's condition and the storm outside progressed seemingly in step with each other, daigo couldn’t help but imagine that the fantastic weather was somehow tied to the arrival of their daughter. he wondered if she would be as wild and strong as that sudden storm ; when hikari took her first steps later and chaos descended on the dojima household as a result, the ex - yakuza would be proven correct.
due to minor complications with hikari’s birth, both mother and baby were kept under observation for days after. it rained until the morning that the dojimas were due to take their daughter home, at which point the sun finally appeared. daigo grinned at that as he placed their new baby girl in her seat next to his wife in the back of their car.

having a baby was not in hikari’s goals. she was newly engaged and in the middle of planning her wedding to tianyu. her training as an speech language pathologist ( for children and young adults ) was barely off of the ground : she had three years of her undergraduate degree under her belt and was barely a senior starting her fourth year. what little free time hikari enjoyed outside of work and school was split between her love and her paternal grandmother, who was starting to have major difficulties with her health. hikari had scarcely turned 21 when she discovered that she was 2 months pregnant with her first child.
this news caused a major upset in her life. children were always something she considered but never wanted until she was at least 30. in many ways, she hoped to imitate her mother and have children later. she and tianyu had discussed the matter at length several times, and they were happy as they were.
tianyu took the discovery in stride. in the face of hikari’s anxieties, he promised to stay home with the baby while she pursued her schooling and career. his string of odd jobs was flexible, and he could always work on cars again once their child was older. it was most important for him that hikari chase the dream she was already so invested in. several long talks with melissa helped soothe hikari, as well. melissa offered to babysit when tianyu needed breaks and quickly became hikari’s greatest source of comfort regarding her sudden surprise. melissa knew the couple would make excellent parents, and, frankly, there wasn’t a challenge out there that hikari dojima couldn’t beat if she put her mind to it. ( much the same sentiment daigo often fondly said regarding his wife. )
hikari decided to try a number of creative means to inform her father that she was pregnant. unfortunately, she failed to account for the one aspect of daigo that melissa knew well to accommodate : daigo was a very intelligent but lovably dense ( truthfully literal ) man. he seemed to miss every pointed question, subtle hint, or set up planned by his daughter to let him know he would be a grandfather soon. after watching hikari struggle for two weeks with every trick she could find online, melissa finally intervened. she sat daigo down, took his hands, and told him directly. hikari was flabbergasted, though she had to laugh at her mother’s quiet “I told you, sweetheart.”
hikari and tianyu were married later in hikari’s pregnancy. it wasn’t quite the day she had initially expected, but she loved every moment regardless. In some ways, that they would welcome their baby ( who remained nameless and was referred to as “the surprise” ) so soon after made it all the sweeter for her. tianyu ultimately took the dojima name in place of his given surname with his mother’s acceptance. he could have cared less that it was against tradition. the dojima name was a proud one with an important history, and he hated to see hikari lose it over what he saw as outdated beliefs.
there were questions as to why the couple didn’t postpone their wedding to lift that burden from their shoulders. tianyu left the choice to hikari. her reasoning was rather straightforward : she wanted her paternal grandmother to be there. hikari was concerned that waiting too long would mean yayoi dojima wouldn’t see her get married. as the future dojima matriarch ( a duty that she lovingly took to heart, as her mother had before her ), it was too significant to hikari to have all generations gathered there. tianyu respected her wishes and carried along with the endeavor.
hikari and tianyu’s baby was a girl. at the hospital, hikari requested that they call her yayoi after her grandmother. melissa was present for hikari’s labor ; when daigo arrived following the birth to check on his daughter and new granddaughter, hikari and tianyu requested permission from him to use yayoi’s name together. melissa, who was warned before her husband arrived, helped to dry daigo’s face once he choked out his approval. her eyes were still shimmering with her own tears, which had scarcely stopped falling as daigo walked in. the family had lost the legendary dojima matriarch in the brief window between hikari’s wedding and what would have been the birth of yayoi’s first great - grandchild, and the hole caused by the absence of such a pillar as yayoi’s name prompted hikari’s idea. she hoped that in giving her daughter the name yayoi, the baby would grow up as determined and cunning as her grandmother.

kazuya, much like his father before him, was an easy baby to care for. he didn’t cry often and generally seemed to have a sweet disposition. his demeanor was quiet even from the beginning. kazuya was as content in his crib as his parents’ arms ( though he had a clear preference for melissa to hold him over daigo quickly as an infant ).
hikari, in contrast, was a very difficult baby. she constantly required some form of soothing and loathed being put down. it was common for either melissa or daigo to lounge with her asleep on their chest in order to comfort her. hikari never liked being returned to her proper bed ; she much preferred to be with either of her parents. as she grew older, she became better about this. however, she still frequently curled up against her father’s torso in her pajamas to nap. melissa has several photographs of the two together like this, though she has a fondness for those from the week when hikari refused to take off her cotton candy unicorn costume at the age of 3. the contrast between the large, bare - chested slumbering ex - yakuza and the fuzzy, pastel - themed little girl in his grasp made for charming pictures.

Like a Dragon Includes a Dragon Quest Puff Puff Parody
January 7, 2020 8:47 AM EST
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio revealed new details on Yakuza: Like a Dragon through Famitsu, most notably that Masaru Watase from Yakuza 5 is back.
This week’s issue of Famitsu magazine includes a feature on Yakuza: Like a Dragon, seeing the PS4 exclusive will be out next week in Japan. The feature includes new comments from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio who most notably revealed the game parodies Dragon Quest‘s Puff Puff Girls. By paying 50,000 Yen to a “Nigi Nigi Girl”, protagonist Ichiban can become “happy”.
Puff Puff is basically the act of stuffing one’s face into the chest of a woman, and it appears in many Dragon Quest games. Obviously, you don’t see anything and it’s only implied. Initially, Puff Puff described the sound effect associated with that act and was made popular by Akira Toriyama in Dragon Ball, as Kame Sennin often mentions it.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon parodies many JRPGs elements, so this reveal is far from surprising, especially considering the Yakuza series already did way more than that with things like its adult video actresses webchat minigame. Puff Puff is typically the kind of element that shows Dragon Quest is an actual religion in Japan, as it never gets censored or changed despite the games being rated Cero A. Cases like Masahiro Sakurai explaining how Super Smash Bros. Ultimate being rated Cero A prevented it from including SNK’s Mai Shiranui shows how Dragon Quest is exempt from these rules.
The Famitsu feature and staff comments also reveal Masaru Watase from Yakuza 5 is one of the returning characters in Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and that both him and Daigo Dojima, which we already saw ingame, will play a role in the main story. We also learned that the Dragon Kart mini-game includes a course set in Kamurocho and that the game has yakuza coat of arms to collect, for an even longer lifespan.
Lastly, we have, thanks to the usual leaks, some comments on Yakuza: Like a Dragon from the Famitsu review staff, who mentioned in a nutshell that the game feels both like a classic JRPG and a classic Yakuza game. According to the reviewers, the game’s main story is 30 hours long, and it takes over 100 hours to fully clear everything. Yakuza: Like a Dragon got a 9/9/10/10(38/40) in Famitsu. In my opinion, though, you should never give importance to Famitsu’s notes because of how illogical they are, coupled with possible conflicts of interests, as lastly seen with Death Stranding.
Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio also published new screenshots for Yakuza: Like a Dragon, showing some of the new and returning characters in action. Profiles for Kazuma Kiryu, Goro Majima, and Taiga Saejima were also published. Kiryu’s profile mentions he was reported dead in 2016. The profiles for  Goro and Taiga mention no one knows what happened to them since when Ryo Aoki’s “Kamurocho 3K plan” happened, and how they are friendly enough to call each other brothers.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon also includes a Pokemon parody named Sujimon, tons of different Jobs including DLC-only ones, and Final Fantasy-like summons. You can check all that out in our previous coverage, which includes the latest trailer. You can also check out our playthrough of the demo.
PS4 exclusive Yakuza: Like a Dragon is titled Ryu Ga Gotoku 7 Hikari to Yami no Yukue in Japan and will launch there on January 16. The game will come west later in 2020.
