Bear in mind some are straight up Pokemon OCs not of the human variety lol

Sen Kuroki

Sen was my first ever fully constructed (for the most part) Pokemon trainer from back in the early-ish 2000s (between ‘08 and ‘14 I think?) and probably the only Pokemon OC I ever made art for. Born and raised in the Hoenn region on Mt. Pyre, she and her family run what amounts to a funeral home, medical examiner’s office, and ghost Pokemon sanctuary. The Kuroki’s have protected the hollow grounds of Mt. Pyre for generations.

A bit frigid and headstrong, Sen doesn’t have any set ambitions or goals just yet, except to wander as a trainer and occassionally throw down a few battles here and there, and discover new ghost Pokemon to study. Her team consists of a Crobat (Helsing), Gengar (Shade), Ariados (Roseus), Houndoom (Dume), Tyrogue (Stray) and Froslass (Yuki).

She has an older brother, Ren, who is an artist that works at the Lilycove Museum. The man has about as much ambition to be anything in particular as his sister.

Malak (last name pending)

Malak is a somewhat oldish concept character I had as, of all things, the source for the human fraction of Mewtwo’s DNA. Though Malak was a less than willing donar and in fact, was accidental due to the negligence of shady hospital dealing mix-ups and the assurence that Malak would not come up as an issue since he was expected to die long before Mewtwo was born. Surprise, surprise, the kid lived.

Malak is exceptionally ill with a persisting heart condition that is not curable without a full heart transplant. Due to his lack of relatives, however, and slightly obscure biology (due to birth defects, etc), it’s not likely he’ll ever get a new heart. Still, with help from his trained medical support Pokemon (think medical support animals!) he has managed to not only survive, but thrive under the care of family friends.

He is barred from Pokemon battles due to his fragile heart, which works out fine since he seems to have an aversion to battles. He does not like to see Pokemon in pain, even if they happen to enjoy the hype of battle.

His Pokemon consist of a trained Joltik that, when Malak is experiencing heart problems, will climb onto his chest and deliver even and/or rhythmic shocks; the Joltik acts in place of a pacemaker, as Malak is still too frail to undergo any sort of heart surgery.

Next, is his primary caretaker and professionally trained Gallade, of whom is a rather fussy and stoic sort that takes its job VERY seriously. Gallade has been trained to take care of most everything for Malak; from cooking and cleaning, to preparing medicine and emergency actions in case Malak suffers any sort of collapse or condition.

Malak is a rather gentle soul that loves life, but is resigned to his possible fate down the line, and has a great wish to go traveling to see the world before he dies. Sadly, due to his condition, it’s not likely to happen.

He seems to have persisiting, recurring dreams of darkness, the sound and feeling of viscous water, and a voice asking “who am I?” since he was young. He’s not sure what ti means, but he has a feeling he may find out soon.

Now onto the Pokemon OCs!

Gwyndolyn

Gwyndolyn - or Gwen - is a Gardevoir that lives in a ficional setting in the Pokemon universe (region yet decided) that I called the Hallow Wood. It’s a supposedly hidden, “mirage” forest shrouded in mist that people in nearby villages and towns warn of. “Once you set foot in the mist of the Hallow Wood, the fairy Pokemon will snatch you away,” they say. Whether this rumor is true or not remains to be seen.

There stands an old and long abandoned manor in the forest that she, her brother (Garret, a Gallade) and her fellow Pokemon live in, and where their former trainer (now deceased) used to live. She and the other inhabitants of the manor and forest have kept it from falling into disrepair, and welcome Pokemon and lost, weary strangers alike to stay and recover. One could assume that the supposed disappearences of trainers into the mist had not, in fact, disappeared, but were found by Gwen or her friends, brought to the manor to rest, and then guided out of the mist and to the other side/towards their destination. No one is certain.

The forest itself is inhabited by mostly fairy, ghost, and psychic type Pokemon, as well as an unusual diversity of other types, with the former three being the most previlant. Legends say it’s these Pokemon in particular that keep the forest shrouded in an all-consuming mist, their goal being to protect something deeply hidden in the forest. No one knows what - or who - this could be though.

She is compassionate and exceptionally powerful, likely due to her many years of training with and without her trainer. She is able to draw the mist over the manor if she senses ill-intent from any travelers, but will let in those who may need help or she senses no bad intentions.

Garret

Garret is a Gallade that also lives in the manor with his sister, Gwyn (both share the same breeding pair of parents). He acts as the manor’s guard and will often patrol the forest around the manor looking for potential threats or lost Pokemon/trainers. He is a pateint and cunning sort, but much more suspicious and wary of others until they prove otherwise.

He is very close to his sister, and is otherwise exceptionally kind to the wild Pokemon of Hallow Wood, and in fact seems to prefer other Pokemon over people. Like his sister, he is exceptionally powerful and has kept the manor safe from ill-fated intruders, along with the help of his teammates.

Flit

Flit is a Scizor and acts as the manor’s gardener, groundskeeper, and handyman. His claws, while seemingly cumbersome, are surprisingly tactile and agile after many years of practice. He is not particularly aggressive, but the few who have met him woud describe him as stoic and with a piercing Stare of Judgement (tm).

Named for his incredible speed and precision, Flit is not the sort to trifle with, though he generally will choose to flee if given the chance. He is not particularly confrontational if a trainer tries to battle him. However, if a careless human - or even a Pokemon - steps on his carefully cultivated flowers and plants, his usual passive nature goes out the window.

Many other Pokemon live at or near the manor, but threse three are the primary caretakers (so far).

Aaaand I think that’s it! I have more Pokemon OCs that aren’t human, but if I went over them all, we’d be here all week lol

#PainKills

In March of 2016, The CDC posted guidelines for opioid prescriptions (1) that would have some of the most devastating consequences for patients with chronic pain. While the intention may have been to curb opioid overdoses, which is a tragedy in its own right, pain patients have been forgotten and left to suffer, and in some cases commit suicide after forced tapering. (2) In the three years since they were issued, the CDC has advised against the misapplication of the guidelines, (3) and the authors of the guideline admit that they have been greatly misapplied. (4) However, the guidelines have not been directly changed or removed.

The CDC Guidelines have resulted in government crackdowns that have left many pain patients without their medication and without recourse. In a recent survey, 85% of pain patients responded that the guidelines have made their pain and quality of life worse; 50% responded that they have considered suicide as a result. (5) People like to say that pain is temporary, but for many, it is not. For many, that pain is only temporary insofar as they will die one day. It should therefore come as no surprise that chronic pain leads to an increased risk of suicide. (6) Jay Lawrence of Tennessee took his own life with the support of his wife after medication was tapered. (7) He is not the only one; there is also Phillip Kuykendall of North Carolina, Allison Kimberly of Colorado, Ryan Trunzo of Massachusetts, Kevin Keller of Virginia, Mercedes McGuire of Indiana, Bob Mason of Montana, Zach Williams of Minnesota, Donald Alan Beyer of Idaho, Doug Hale of Vermont, Travis Patterson of Texas, Sherri Little of California, and Katherine Goddard of Florida all died from pain related suicides. (8)

Pain not only kills with threats of suicide, but with risk of complications and dying in preventable agony like the case of Dawn Anderson. She had the misfortune of getting her medication at a pill mill, and when it was shut down no doctor would take up her pain management (9) She begged her primary care doctor to continue prescribing the medication she desperately needed and was ignored (10) Dawn passed away on March 11, 2019 in a hospital from complex medical issues that were no doubt exacerbated by untreated pain. That's just one example of horror that pain patients face when they are abruptly tapered off their medication. Pain patients like Emily Ulrich (11) and Danny Elliott (12) have suffered through these taperings, and their quality of life has dramatically suffered. Even cancer patients, supposedly exempt from these guidelines, are suffering needlessly from reduced opioid prescriptions. (13)

It truly should be a moral outrage that people are left to suffer and often die, all based on a lie. Most people who get addicted to opioids do not do so through legal opioid prescriptions. However, in spite of the evidence of this, the stories that end up in wide circulation in media are the ones specifically selected because they fit this narrative. (14) One study has shown that medicare patients treated with opioids are at the lowest risk of addiction. (15) Furthermore, another study showed it is friends and family that are more often the gateway to addiction as opposed to doctors. (15) This doesn’t mean the risk of addiction is not an important issue, but one’s own risk of addiction is a lot more complicated than the story that has been continuously fed through the media and should be decided between a doctor and their patient, not the CDC or the government.

There is also a general misunderstanding of drug dependency and calling it addiction. When in truth, many people become dependent without developing an addiction.(17) In spite of this, patients with a developed dependency continue to be dangerously cut off and some will inevitably turn to illegal opioids.(18) Addicts will continue to be inadequately treated, opioid prescribers needlessly scapegoated, (19) all while overdoses from illicit drugs are still growing at an exponential rate. (20)

Despite all attempts to curb the opioid crisis through the reduction of legal prescriptions, fentanyl deaths have been doubling every year (21). Pill mills have been shut down, legal prescriptions are down, and yet somehow the overdoses continue to rise. (22) All of this comes at a cost, as pain patients are consistently stigmatized by healthcare workers as pill seekers. (23)

Addiction is a terrible affliction, and one that is not well understood. However, restriction does not treat addiction, and instead is creating a new set of victims: the pain patients forcibly tapered or completely cut off from their medication. This is unacceptable. Compassion and fact-based medicine should be the core of how we treat addiction, not restriction that ultimately ends up hurting both addicts and pain patients. It is time to admit that we, as a society, have made a mistake. It’s time to admit there’s a lot we don’t know about addiction and how it really works. And lastly, it’s time to ask ourselves if causing the needless suffering and death of thousands of pain patients is an acceptable way to try to combat the problem of addiction and overdose. How many people have to suffer in unnecessary pain? How many more overdoses and suicides need to happen before we can acknowledge that this is not working?

In our desire to battle addiction, we must not forget pain patients. We need to start listening more to those of us who have been screaming for so long about our pain. I am a pain patient who was suddenly cut off from opioids when the guidelines were released, and I am outraged! I had to fight tooth and nail to get my medicine back, and even still I face stigma. I have reliably taken opioids many times over the years without any abuse and yet I’m treated as if addiction is inevitable. I also come from a family of addicts and have lost people I love to addiction. I understand that pain, and it’s why I resent these restrictions that are little more than security theater. Pain patients are either losing their quality of life, or their life entirely, because #PainKills. We have the means to relieve people of their pain but choose to withhold it because in truth, addiction disgusts us and we’d rather restrict access than face the issue head on.

I encourage my fellow pain patients to tell their stories using #PainKills and for allies to help boost our voices, maybe post one of the many articles I have cited. Either way, we need to get our stories told. We need people to understand that opioids are a useful medication, that pain relief is a worthwhile goal, and that not all pain conditions are curable. We need to stop stigmatizing pain relief and start treating it as a basic human right. We must keep the conversation of prescriptions between us and our doctors! We cannot continue to tolerate the government going after doctors for treating people in unimaginable pain.

We have seen how #PainKills by taking the lives of those unable to see another way out, and how #PainKills our ability to have a meaningful life without sufficient pain medication. We cannot afford to go unheard anymore.

That Makes Us Two: Chapter 4: Sleep

Finally, they had some proper rest. After the previous day, Shadow and Amy needed a few hours of sleep.

Especially Shadow

Strangely, and as to her conclusion, Amy didn't feel tired on the least and this was only because she was in Shadow's body.

Being the Ultimate Life Form, Shadow's body didn't need sleep to function properly. However, just for the pleasure of it, his body would oblige and get a nap.

For the first in his life, as inside being Amy's body, Shadow was utterly exhausted. He had to admit, that it was nice, to feel this normal.

Just normal.

It was day time when had arrived at their next destination. This time, Shadow knew where they were going and guided Amy through the whole flight time. Once they landed on land, and settle in their tents, Shadow had told Amy one thing only before drifting into sleep.

"Do not...I repeat...Do NOT touch anything...wait for me to wake up."Amy nodded as she was more fascinated by the place than worried by Shadow's words.

As Shadow went to sleep, Amy waited outside. Looking around the Island she noticed blue and hot pink trees, something that she had never seen before. Plants and flowers that weren't written on the books she had read before; animals and insects that that were alienated yet cosmically beautiful.

No wonder why this place was called "Dream Island"

Shadow said to not touch anything, but he didn't say she couldn't go exploring, right?

Is everything went alright, she didn't have to see an angry Shadow today.

Amy walked slowly as to not wake up Shadow. She made sure that she was far away from the camp before she began running.

She ran as fast as she could getting the adrenaline through her body. The feeling was amazing, the feeling of being able to go where-ever you wanted, whenever you wanted...that feeling of power, of being on top of the world...

She appreciated it, but it wasn't for her.

She liked taking her time. Appreciating each fragment in life, all living things, small or big. She liked going slow and steady, enjoying each moment, savoring it slowly.

She had now realized how different she was from Sonic.

and she wonders if Shadow felt the same.

She walked some more and as clumsy as she is, she stumbles upon a large and thick tree root. She laid on her tummy for a while thinking how lucky she was that she was in Shadow's body. She felt fine and was ready to stand up, but as soon as she held her head up she noticed a large mushroom in front of her...and the mushroom had eyes, a mouth, and small hands and feet.

"Oro"

"AAAAHHHHHHH!"

Her loud scream was heard all the way to the camp.

"I told her to not touch anything", Shadow mumbled as he woke up from his slumber. He quickly stood up and got out of his tent. He looked around the area but didn't find Amy anywhere near the camp. Shadow then, ran towards the scream.

Amy stumble as she felt sleep take over her. She could hear a river nearby and decided to go there to clean herself up a bit before she went back to the camp. The giant Mushroom had thrown at her face some kind of yellow powder, kinda like pollen. It covered all of her body and she was beginning to feel itchy about it...and sleepy too for some reason.

She had finally made it to the river and washed her face with the cold water, hoping that maybe, that way her sleepiness could go away.

She looked at her reflection on the water.

Well, more like Shadow's reflection.

Dammit...he is attractive.

She thought as she appreciated Shadow's features more. He had beautiful red-colored eyes, his face was delicate where it needed to be but strong at the same time. Perfect teeth, and if he tried a little bit more; the perfect smile. It wasn't only his face, but his body as well. Slender and fit, not too bulky, just perfect. Every aspect of his physic was well balanced and-

WHY AM I THINKING ABOUT HIM?!

She already had a boyfriend, a secret one on the least, Sonic. There was no one but him in her heart. Now and forever.

She loved him very dearly since they were kids and now they were finally together. She loved him and he loved her.

Right?

Amy laid down on the grass as she drifted on her thoughts, looking at the blue wide sky.

Sonic...

Shad-

Shadow swore that she was going to give a piece of his mind to the pink one once he finds her. He kept looking all over the place, and even went back to the camp several times.

Didn't she know how annoying it was to walk?

And the pain it was to run?

As the Ultimate Life Form, if Shadow wanted to go somewhere, he just ran. Front and back without getting tired. Now he had to worry about keeping a constant breathing pattern if he didn't want to get tired too fast.

It was just so annoying being a normal Mobian.

After walking some more, he had finally found her.

Sleeping.

Now she's really going to get it.

Making him worried and panic, he was really about to start screaming her name and she dared to be asleep?

Not like he cared enough about her to do that, no, this girl was as worth as trash to him. Yeah, she didn't matter at all, but that wasn't the case right now,

Who in the world did this girl think she was?

Shadow decided to have good use of the River. He was going to wake up Amy in the worst way. He mustered up all of the strength and rolled her to the river.

Wow, I am heavy. I should work out more.

He thought as he successfully placed Amy on the river with aloud 'Splash!'

He waited for her to start screaming at him, angry and irritated.

He waited a few seconds.

And a few more

"SH*T!"

Shadow jumped to the river and as he tried to pick up Amy, he struggled way too much. Her whole body was wet and the water and its current made it difficult for him to raise her.

He got desperate, this was supposed to be a stupid prank. This wasn't supposed to escalate so drastically.

Why in the world she hasn't woken up?"

Finally, Shadow felt Amy's body being lifted by an unknown force. He was too concentrated on getting out of the water himself that he hadn't noticed that a local Villager had come to help him.

Shadow finally got out of the water and sighed in relief to see that Amy was breathing.

"Seems like I got here at the right time." The villager said as he looked at Shadow.

"Yes...Yes, you did."

Shadow well knew Dream Village, a few years back, he had lived within the community. Everyone knew him, and so, the whole village showed concern when the body of Shadow the hedgehog was brought up to the Queen of the Village. Of course, no one knew that the one inside Shadow's body was Amy.

The doors of the castle open as he recognizes an old friend running towards them.

"What happened? What did you do to him?" The Queen asked Shadow angrily, unaware that she was, in fact, talking to Shadow himself.

"There's a lot of things I have to tell you, Elena."

"So, you switched bodies with the pink one? She is trapped in your body and you are trapped in hers?", Elena asked Shadow. They were both on a bedroom, watching Amy sleep. Shadow in one corner of the room, arms crossed; he placed his right foot on the wall to be more comfortable. Elena the fox, Queen of Dream Village, delicately sat on a chair next to the black hedgehog's body.

"Yes, and now for some reason, she can't wake up."

"Doctors have told me she must have scared a Yume Mushroom, making it release a powder that makes you sleep."

"Is it curable?"

"Yes"

"Well, will you tell me what's the cure?"

"First answer me something" Elena stood up from her chair and walked across the room towards Shadow. "Why did you come back?"

"To get our bodies back, we need to find the broken pieces and put them back together to form the Purple Gem...and we know one of the pieces is here," Shadow said as he looked at the red fox on the eyes.

"So...you didn't come back for me?", She questioned.

"If I had come because of you, believe me, I wouldn't show up in this body." Shadow tried to move away but Elena had grabbed him by the arm, making him look to her blue gaze.

"I don't care in what body you are..." Elena took a few seconds to get closer to his face. " You could stay like this and be with me...you know that I never cared if its a boy or a girl, it's you who I like...and your friend's body is not bad. Actually, is pretty above average, a very beautiful hedgehog indeed."

"I am honored your majesty, but", Shadow was finally able to break free from her grasp. He walked towards Amy's bed. " I don't feel comfortable in this body, I would very much like my body back...so, could you please tell me how to wake up Amy and give me the broken fragment of the Purple Gem?"

"Being on the wrong body...is something I had to live with since I was small, so I know what you must feel like...Fine, I'll give you the piece of the broken Purple Gem but under one condition..." Elena had changed her go flirty attitude to a more serious one. "Once you put the Purple Gem back together and have returned to your body, bring me the Purple Gem...there's something I must do with it."

"Yes, my Queen."

Shadow didn't bow but smiled at his old friend. Shadow had to confess that she was probably the only person who had his respect. She had helped him localize all the Chaos Emerald before without asking a single question, she had confided in him and him in her. They had a long history together that it would be too long to describe in a single paper.

Elena smiled back. "Well, the only way to wake up your friend is...with a kiss."

"I didn't you as one to joke around," Shadow said.

"That's because I don't make jokes." Elena simply said. She knew she had lost the battle as soon as she Shadow's worried face. Shadow could have been a great friend to her, but not even once in their years of friendship had Shadow showed such emotion towards her or anyone.

The pink one must be changing him and for the better.

"...Fine." Shadow didn't want to think too much about it. It was just a kiss, just lips against lips...nothing more. No feelings were needed.

So then, why was his heart beating so fast?

For Chaos' sake, it was just the pink brat, why was he getting so nervous for?

Come on Shadow, just do it!

He was slowly getting closer and closer to her face, he closed his eyes as soon as he felt her breathing coming out of her nose. Any minute now, their lips would touch...just right now.

"PERVERT!"

Shadow felt Amy's hammer hit against his head, making him fall to the floor.

"WHAT THE HECK ROSE, I WAS TRYING TO WAKE YOU UP!", Shadow said as he quickly stood up from the floor, facing her.

"YOU WERE GOING TO KISS ME WHILE I WAS ASLEEP!" Amy said screaming at him, rapidly standing from her bed.

"Oh, I forgot to tell you, Shadow..." Elena had an evil smile on her face. "Before entering the room, I had sent a knight to kiss Amy and she woke up...that still doesn't explain why she was asleep when we entered."

#BlackHistoryMonth: Disability History is Black History is American History

Each year in February, America reflects on milestones and achievements in the Black community, as well as its role in shaping American history. Often left out of this discussion is the integral role that disability, healthcare, and the treatment of black bodies played in shaping Black history and American history as a whole. So please enjoy a timeline of #DisabledBlackHistory that shows some of the most well-known Black historical events-- and the influence of disabled POC and black bodies on those events.

1619-1808:

Slaves are legally transported from Africa to the Americas through the Middle Passage, the route slaves traders took across the Atlantic Ocean via slave ships. Captives were housed in tightly confined, unsanitary compartments in the ship, at times stacked onto each other. Physical and medical neglect and abuse were the norm, and as a rule captives were forced to release bodily fluids where they were seated, leading to the spread of infectious diseases. An estimated 15% of captives did not survive the journey, with a total of up to 2 million deaths as a result of the Middle Passage until the importing of slaves was outlawed in the US in 1808.

1600’s-1800’s:

“The Dozens” is a well-known, rich tradition within the African American community in which participants playfully (or not so much) drag not only each other, but often their moms with a series of incisive, targeted jokes. Less well known about the tradition is its roots during slavery, as it was often used by slaves to judge and devalue other slaves on the basis of their flaws-- frequently of their apparent disabilities. According to Krip Hop Nation, “The name itself [“The Dozens”] refers to the sale of slaves who had been overworked, were disabled, or beaten-down – their physical (and often mental) conditions affected their value and they were sold by the dozen, which was considered by slaves, the lowest position within the community.” The game was played as an “outlet of aggression” for slaves who could not yet fight or prevent their oppression or the discarding of slaves on an ableist basis, but could instead encourage each other to develop a thick skin emotionally in the meantime.

Mid-1600’s:

Colonies develop “Slaves Codes” that, for the first time, codify that slavery will happen on the basis of skin color alone. Previously, indentured servants and slaves were of every race. Once Slave Codes limited slavery solely to African Americans, physicians and academics became instrumental in the medicalization of slavery and pathologization of blackness to justify continuing slavery.

Late-1700’s:

Physician Benjamin Rush, signer of the Declaration of Independence and Surgeon General of the Continental Army during the American Revolution, theorizes a disease known as “negritude”, which he considered a form of congenital leprosy, to explain dark skin tones, which could be treated with aggressive rubbing of the skin.

Mid-1800’s:

Physician Samuel Cartwright theorizes diseases to explain disobedient or rebellious slaves. “Drapetomania” is a curable mental illness in which slaves develop the desire to run away from their masters and obtain freedom, which is treated by keeping slaves “well-fed and clothed” and “not overworked”. “Dysaethesia Aethiopica”, or “rascality” in layman’s terms, is another mental illness marked by a “difficult [...] mind and sensibility” that are “apt to do much mischief” and “slight their work” whose root cause is “negro liberty”, which is curable via whippings and abuse.

Early-to-Mid-1800’s:

Slavery ends in the North, and continues in the South, sparking the Abolitionist Movement. The Underground Railroad, a network of safe houses owned by freed African Americans and White allies from the South leading into the Northern US and Canada, is established to allow slaves to escape often by foot. The most well-known “conductor” of the Railroad was Harriet Tubman, an escaped slave woman who developed a traumatic brain injury and consequently epilepsy and narcolepsy while enslaved and eventually facilitated the freedom of more than 70 slaves.

Mid-1800’s:

While growing medical literature distinguishes blackness as a syndrome and Black people as a separate species, physicians simultaneously primarily use slaves for experimentation of new procedures and treatments to generalize for use in mainstream white populations. J. Marion Sims, known as the father of modern gynecology, created the speculum and a procedure to repair post-childbirth vaginal fistulas by buying and experimenting on slaves. Despite being available in 1845, Sims did not use anesthesia on his black female subjects because Black people were believed to experience less pain from injury. This has long been debunked.

Mid 1800’s-Early 1900’s:

Traveling vaudeville and circus acts are the leading form of entertainment in the US. Many vaudeville acts prominently feature minstrelsy or “blackface”, the act of White (and eventually some Black) actors painting their skin to take on a caricatured, deliberately mocking impression of African Americans. The first popular blackface act was “Jumping Jim Crow” in the 1820’s, said to be inspired by the dance of a physically disabled slave by the same name. Travelling circus acts prominently feature “freakshows” featuring performers displaying their rare conditions and disabilities, including dwarfism, albinism, and other conditions. African Americans were frequently used in these acts. Sarah Baartman, known as the “Hottentot Venus” was put on display due to having an exaggeratedly large bottom due to a condition called steatopygia.

1861-1865:

The Civil War is fought, and won by the North following the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, which eventually led to the freedom of slaves starting on June 19th, 1865 (otherwise celebrated as Juneteenth). Black soldiers were an integral part of the Union’s victory, with more than 15 soldier earning a Medal of Honor after the war. Those who fought in the war are also the first African Americans to receive federal disability pensions for veterans.

Late 1800’s:

Following the abolishment of the 13th Amendment and of slavery, all Southern States eventually passed “Black Codes” and “Jim Crow Laws” to segregate and restrict the rights of former slaves and their descendants during Reconstruction. This leads to segregations of most major institutions and facilities, including hospitals, schools, and facilities for people with disabilities. Black physicians build their careers during this time via segregated hospitals, nursing and medical schools, medical journals and-- in response to the whites-only American Medical Association at the time-- establishing the National Medical Association specifically for African Americans.

1880’s-1920’s:

Booker T. Washington establishes the Tuskegee institute, which initially teaches nursing and eventually established the first Veterans Hospital for African Americans. He also founded “National Negro Health Week” in the 1920’s to spotlight unaddressed health disparities in the African American community. It spotlights diseases prevalent in the Black community, particularly syphilis and tuberculosis. At the time, African Americans are believed to be predisposed to these diseases due to genetics. Germ Theory later emerges in the 1930’s that reveals that both diseases are infectious. Their prevalence in Black communities is later explained by segregation and poverty concentrating and restricting African Americans to living under unsanitary conditions in low-income communities.

Early 1900’s:

The field of “Eugenics” is created and mainstreamed in the United States via the American Eugenics Society. The eugenics movement, which originally promoted selective breeding for exceptionally positive traits in affluent communities, eventually focused on eliminating negative traits across society. Eugenicists lobbied for legislation in many states to forcibly sterilize groups with high rates of “undesirable” traits, primarily in poor, disabled, and minority communities. The US Supreme Court upheld the practice in the case Buck vs. Bell in 1927. This resulted in the forced sterilization of over 64,000 people (a low estimate) in the United States alone. The rise of the Nazi movement in Germany and the Holocaust eventually led the movement to lose power by the 1940s, but the practice of involuntary sterilization continued until the mid-1970s, and laws are not codified explicitly banning it until as late as the 2000s.

1930’s-1940’s:

Hitler assumes power, begins the Third Reich, and eventually begins the Holocaust by segregating, interning, and engaging in genocide of Jewish people, other ethnic minorities, and disabled people across Germany and Western Europe, triggering World War II. Hitler cites American eugenics and sterilization laws as his inspiration for ethnic cleansing and segregation. Over 100,000 African Americans fight in World War II, under segregated conditions. The victory of the US in World War II is thought to be one of the catalysts of the Civil Rights movement and ending of segregation in the US.

Mid 1930-1970’s:

The “Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male”, also known as the Tuskegee Experiments, is initiated by the United States Public Health Service in the 1930s. Contrary to the popular misconception, the study did not infect any African American participants with syphilis. However, a small, predominantly African American community in Alabama was targeted for its high rate of syphilis infections before treatment existed. The goal of the study was to gain an understanding of the long-term effects of syphilis and to discover a potential treatment. Very early into the study, penicillin was discovered as a treatment for syphilis and other bacterial infections and mainstreamed quickly into medical practice around the country. Up to 600 Black participants in the study, however, were left untreated for syphilis during the course of the decades-long study. Many participants were never offered treatment, not formally diagnosed with syphilis but told they had “bad blood”, enticed into continuing treatment in the participating hospital with free healthcare, and given placebos and experimental treatments in place of penicillin. The study was later stopped and abandoned due to these unethical practices, and revealed to the public in the 1970’s with led to lawsuits and congressional hearings. A number of medical studies followed a similar practice of withholding treatment during this era, which disproportionately targeted Black civilians and prisoners in the US.

1950′s:

A number of advances in the medical field and science emerge starting in the post-World War era, among them the discovery of the Polio Vaccine in the 1950′s, advances in cancer treatment, and by the end of the 20th century the study of the human genome. A little-known fact about each of these discoveries is that they are in part thanks to a black woman named Henrietta Lacks. Lacks died in 1951 of a rare form of cancer that produced the first known “immortal cells” that would reproduce outside of the human body indefinitely. Her cancerous tissue, now known as “HeLa cells”, have since been used by researchers to develop treatments and cures of many diseases. Her contribution to medicine is controversial, however, because her tissue was taken without her consent and her family initially was neither made aware of, nor as of today compensated for, the medical discoveries her tissue facilitated.

1950’s-1970’s:

The Supreme Court case Brown vs. Board of Education finds “separate, but equal” segregated facilities unconstitutional and inherently unequal, which slowly leads to the integration of schools, hospitals, and other public facilities. This win eventually sparks the Civil Rights Movement and victories such as the Voting Rights Act and Civil Rights Act in the 1960’s. Among prominent leaders in the movement is Fannie Lou Hamer, who helped organize the Freedom Summer in Mississippi to register Black residents to vote. Fannie Lou Hamer is a survivor of an involuntary hysterectomy, which occurred without her knowledge during a procedure for chronic kidney disease and was a result of forced sterilization laws that targeted Black women and were popular in the South. Another prominent group was the Black Panther Party who, while advocating for Black power, also provided for local Black communities with free healthcare clinics and food pantries. Bradley Lomax, a Black Panther with Multiple Sclerosis, helped to organize the occupation of regional offices of the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) for disability rights, knowns are the “504 Sit-ins” that led to the addition of Section 504 of the American Rehabilitation Act of 1973, a precursor to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

1980’s:

The HIV/AIDS epidemic begins in the early 1980s. It’s first clinically observed in gay communities and receives the name “gay-related immune deficiency” (GRID) until it’s observed in non-LGBTQ communities and receives the name AIDS in 1982. The disease eventually gets the reputation of affecting “the 4-H Club”-- primarily attacking 1) heroine and intravenous (IV/needle) drug users, 2) hemophiliacs and chronically ill patients who give and receive blood in medical settings, 3) homosexuals and the LGBTQ community, and 4) Haitians and poor Black communities in the US and, eventually, globally. The United States government was slow to fund research for AIDS through much of the 1980’s, and one of the Reagan Administration’s first references to the disease was to propose a travel ban on immigrants and tourists with the disease in 1987. While treatment and prevention methods eventually cut infection and mortality rates for HIV, both cisgender and transgender women of color are disproportionately infected and die from AIDS.

1990′s:

Disability rights advocacy leads to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The ADA ensures the right to “reasonable accommodation” for people with disabilities in public spaces in the US. The ADA is the basis on which Olmstead vs. L.C. and E.W. is decided, which allows people with disabilities to be able to live in their communities rather than be put in nursing homes and other institutions. One of the plaintiffs in the case is Louis Curtis (L.C.), a black woman with a developmental disability.

2010’s:

A series of highly publicized, viral extra-judicial killings of unarmed African Americans by police and white civilians in the news and social media sparks the beginning of the Black Lives Matter movement, which advocates accountability for police brutality and discriminatory treatment of Black people by American institutions. Several of the most high-profile victims of the BLM movement, such as Eric Garner, Keith Lamont Scott, Freddie Gray, Sandra Bland, Deborah Banner, and Laquan McDonald had some form of disability, medical or mental condition. Disabled and deaf people are disproportionately targeted by police brutality due to police hyper-reliance on “compliance” by those facing arrest.
