Hello from the Swamp Mermaids!

We are two lesbian swamp mermaids in an ldr who love each other very much and want to share our love with other sapphics through a suggestion blog!

Mod Liza (hair down in the icon) is currently studying to be an opera singer in the Midwest. She is v anxious but her lovely girlfriend helps her with it. Also, she dresses herself with a swamp aesthetic (meaning most of her clothes are shades of green, blue, and gray).

Mod Abbie (hair up in the icon) is currently teaching dance on the East Coast. She has adhd and when she is happy she wiggles a lot (this happens every time she sees or texts Mod Liza). Mod Abbie is the one who dubbed Mod Liza a swamp mermaid because she has red hair like Ariel.

Both of us are hardcore Holtzbert shippers as we both realized we are gay around the time of the new Ghosbusters movie. We met through the Holtzbert fandom by chance and we recently cosplayed as Holtz an Erin (see icon).

My Year in Writing

according to AO3

2016 was the year I finally got my act together. I actually started writing stuff I wanted people to read and putting it out there in the world for people to read it! I had written fanfic and original stuff before but since I got a tumblr and an AO3 I was inspired to write and create! Kylux was most certainly my muse for most of the year and I really got myself involved in the Star Wars fanbase here on tumblr. 

In total I wrote 9 works this year: 7 for Star Wars (Kylux) , 1 for Yuri!!! on Ice (my latest obsession), and 1 for the new Ghostbusters movie after I saw it over the summer.

Published Word Count: 48,360

I don’t think that’s too bad considering I put my first bit of fic up in May. My goal for next year will be to get over 100,000 and I don’t think I’ll have trouble reaching that goal. I refer to my published word count here because I spent all of November on a Rey x Phasma fic that I have yet to finish (it’ll go into my 2017 word count when I’m finished with it and so far it’s the longest thing I’ve ever written :) ).

I try really hard not to live and die by kudos but I really love getting that email from AO3 when someone likes something I’ve written. I don’t think I did poorly in this area and I have nothing to compare it to so I’ll leave this number alone.

I could go into comments and hits but I’m not sure how to quantify a really successful fic yet. I’m just going to link some of my most popular fics and say something about each one:

Little Talks (Ghostbusters, 2016)- This was probably my most popular fic all year. I have several theories as to why this might be the case (kylux being far more active) but I think it has to do with the lack of femslash out there for people to read. I hope to write more in the new year (maybe not for this particular pairing, Holtzbert,) and my November NaNoWriMo fic is a step in the right direction (one I’ve really loved exploring).  

A New Composition (Yuri!!! on Ice, 2016)- I wrote this towards the end of the year and I refer to it as music porn (Disclaimer- no it is not actual porn). It’s the story of how Yuri’s free skate piece came to be. I wrote it because after listening to the piece over and over again when it came up on my spotify playlist, I had far too many feelings about the piece and needed to express them somehow. Some people seemed to like it so I’m guessing it doesn’t read as though I am vomiting musical critique all over the screen. I really liked writing this. 

Kylux

I’m making this a separate section 

Terrible People - Not only was this my first published fanfic but it was also my first attempt at long fic. I stopped writing it in the middle of the summer when I realized that I really should outline something that is beginning to approach 30k words. It’s not terrible, I’m not ashamed of it, and I won’t abandon it, but no I probably won’t continue this ever. It takes the title of longest fic I wrote in 2016 (although my Reysma piece for this year already knocks it out of the water). I suppose it’s a benchmark now of where I’ve come from in writing.

Galaxy Falls - This was my second fanfic ever. I wrote it mostly because I was trying a different style of writing in the intro and because I am hopelessly in love with a good aesthetic. Side by side in a pickup truck next to the person you love in the dark flanked by the towering pine trees of the Pacific Northwest? I am so down for that. This was a strange Gravity Falls/Star Wars au that I would still love to talk about. I threw in Ahsoka Tano at the end because she’s my girl.

 In October, I participated in Huxloween and wrote 4 one shots for the event (way more than I had anticipated on the outset).

More Than Spice - Spoiler Alert: I have never had a pumpkin spice latte in my life. However, I love pumpkin pie and all the smells and tastes of fall, even if I don’t drink coffee. This fic played with the idea of smells and tastes having memories attached. I just think this one is cute.

Fireside Chats - The prompt for this one was bonfire and I wrote about the TFA gang and Kylo and Hux being forced to spend the weekend together. I really liked writing the ghost stories that Finn and Poe tell. Finn’s was obviously inspired by the actual clowns that went around just before Halloween last year. I also really liked writing the snarky but hopelessly in love Kylux. They are so awful but adorable in a way that few other relationship dynamics can hope to achieve.

Black Cats and Witches - For this fic, the prompt was transformations. I’m not sure what inspired me for this one but it was fun to write. I was stuck in a very boring Statistics class at the time so if anyone is interested in seeing some of my doodles for this fic just ask. 

The Assistant - I’ve played around with a Frankenstein au in the past (so has @senators-and-scalpels ask them about it!) and for the prompt gothic horror I decided to try my hand at a different writing style. I really love the book Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and I’m still trying to get through Dracula by Bram Stoker, so this fic was a brief attempt at drawing on that Victorian prose. 

The last fic I wrote for 2016 was for the verymerrykylux secret santa gift exchange.

Let It Snow- I got the assignment over the summer and I had no idea what to do with it for a long time. I don’t think I ever posted the wishlist for this fic so I’ll do it here : “ i really love bees!! as in... i want to be a beekeeper. and eh.. next to that, i'm a huge jack white/st. vincent/beck/etc. fan.. so if you like those musicians, do something with it! and well eh next to that.. i really love the romanticizing of everyday-things like getting up in the morning and finding out your cat has left you a dead mouse on the carpet or something... i hope that does inspire you, and otherwise: make something you love to do”. I was not sure what to do with that until about December. I wrote about overworked business man Hux being dragged to a rowdy bar and flirted with by lead singer Kylo. I think it turned out rather nicely and you can be the judge of whether or not I actually fulfilled the wishlist.

Holtzbert Headcanon #2

Growing up, Holtz’s family wasn’t the wealthiest but they made the best of the holidays. Digging the fun Christmas aesthetic, Charlie Brown Christmas trees were a thing in the Holtzmann household, tiny, fake little table trees, as were dollar store and handmade ornaments. They didn’t have much but damn it they made the best of it and everything was so damn colorful and mismatched. 

The first official Christmas the ‘busters are together, Holtz lets slip she’s always wanted to decorate one of those huge spruce trees but never got the chance growing up. “The biggest our trees got were coffee table size and were plastic...might have melted one side of it....” Despite not actively celebrating the holiday, Erin decides to surprise the engineer and the rest of her friends. 

When called downstairs the next day, Holtz skids to a stop mid-slide down the foreman’s pole, coming face to face with the top of the top of a fifteen-foot spruce. Needless to say, there is much whooping and excited hugging and maybe Erin’s blushing more than normal because of the contact or maybe it’s just the heat in the building. Hard to say, but she spends the rest of the afternoon and much of the next day helping Holtz and everyone decorate their tree, the engineer repelling from the ceiling in order to place ornaments higher up and insisting on using green tinsel and ghost ornaments, “Because we’re the Ghostbusters and our tree has a theme!”. She and Erin might have gotten into a tinsel throwing fight at some point that may or may not have devolved into glitter-bombing each other, which may or may not have led the two into stumbling under a sprig of mistletoe, panting, covered in holiday cheer, and grinning just a bit too wide.
