URBAN LEGEND: There's a guy who hides in the backseat of your car with a knife
SUBURBAN LEGEND: the guy with the knife doesn't have the specific brand and color of knife specified by the HOA

Every time one of my friends who owns a home says some shit like "I want that 12 foot skeleton but the HOA would skin me alive." I am just mesmerized by the fact they think that's reasonable.

I swear, if I ever end up in a neighborhood with an HOA, I'm just going to ignore all the rules regarding what you can and can't do with your property (safety and general house/lawn care aside) like, no Karens I'm going to keep my pentacle wind chimes, my statue of a frog playing the banjo, and my hammock up.
Oh? You're giving me a fine? Too bad, I'm not giving you money. Oh? You're suing me now? Too bad, it's literally my property, what're you going to do, tell the jury that I decorated my own property. Did you want to come inside and rearrange my furniture too?

one of my favourite stories from mistholme is the lantern from the episode "isolated" because it shows the innate horror of being part of a homeowners association.
anyways I just watched the john oliver video on homeowners associations and was reminded of it

so i should clean up the mess in my garden cause it's "trash" and doesn't fit your "aesthetic" but Jessica across the street and her gnome orgy can stay?
it's a single tire, i wanted to make it into a flower thingy, but procrastination has been fucking me, so i haven't gotten around to it
it's still better than having 20+ tiny ceramic perverts in my garden if you ask me, they stare at you i night, i swear those things can move and talk and are just avoiding taxes
but sure, i'll clean up my "trash" but if Jessica wakes up tomorrow, and all her grungy elf on the shelf knock offs suddenly exploded into geologist themed confetti, then i'm not the one you're looking for

There’s no way people genuinely think suburbs are good?? Have you ever BEEN to a suburbs based town or city? Newsflash it sucks donkey balls. Literally terrible. It’s sanitized to all hell, no room for community, self expression, or really anything for that matter. They’re actively anti-community. They go out of their way to make breeding grounds for isolated nuclear families which are only enforced by society so you have a reason not to end it all after a long 12 hour shift at your minimum wage job. Did I mention how brutally car centric American suburbs are? Jesus Christ you can’t go anywhere without a car. Not the gym, not to work, not to “downtown” (a strip mall with a giant mega chain store). Everywhere. Fucking. Place requires a car. If you don’t have one well I guess you’re FUCKED. No social life for you. Also why the fuck is the only community organization the HOA?? An organization designed by rich stuck ups to bully you into keeping house prices high and no other reason. Why is the only interference by a governing authority the one that artificially keeps house prices high? I’m not even gonna talk about all the racism that happens Im not even qualified. What shitty little antiques of the era of worshipping the American Dream

I know tumbler hates homeowners' associations and good for us, but I've started seeing posts along the lines of "why would anyone sign on to this / start this in the first place" and uhhhh guys it's racism. We talked about it in my grade school history classes, even. HOAs exist because racism.
Usually when you move into a HOA house, you are required to sign a contract that you won't sell the house to anyone unless they join the HOA. That's how they're sustained; you can't just opt out, if you want to live in certain areas it's basically impossible to find a house being sold without this requirement.
And the reason this is true is because HOAs could refuse to admit or sell to people of color. When they started being a thing in the 1900s they were openly, explicitly a tool for maintaining segregated neighborhoods and keeping people of color, especially black people, out of "nice" neighborhoods.
This is illegal now, of course, but they can still do it by proxy by maintaining "standards" of price, upkeep, community approval, etc. that favor wealth and cover up quiet discrimination.
It's just weird to me that I've seen multiple posts speculating about what mysterious motivations might possibly have led to these things. It's not complicated and you can find this information very quickly. The motivation was racism.

Game of Thrones Modern AU Idea
Had a humorous thought. An AU fiction of a GoT, but instead of the taking of the 7 Kingdoms, the families are trying to become head of the HOA.

I do not understand American HOAs, you are telling me that some dipshit/s can just tell you you can't do whatever you want with your own home and you allow that? You do not simply kill them?

God forbid someone spends an afternoon changing their sparkplugs and oil in their own driveway. Or plants their own veggies. People are mental.

There is a Home Owners Association meeting at my library today, and I’m not sure how to describe it but every person who has come in looks like they belong to an HOA. I took one look at a woman and was like “the HOA meeting is in the room across the hall”
