The busy time of year is definitely here! Today, we canned tomato juice and our own version of Rotel. We dehydrated basil, parley, sage and thyme. We froze some bell peppers and some okra and pulled up our cabbages and broccoli because they just weren't thriving. It is such a nice feeling to know we've accomplished so much and are getting a little closer to filling our cabinets with homegrown veggies and fruits. #loveourlife #homegrown #eatyourveggies #gardenfood #gardenlife #canning #homesteadkitchen #tomatoes #homesteadlife #ohiogardening #smallfarmohio #ohiohomestead #GrowSomething #growyourownfood #grow #plantsmakepeoplehappy #preppingforwinter #wedidthis #thankyougrandma (at Stoutsville, Ohio) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDuNyENAmeL/?igshid=kj2urprt1f6d

Somedays the loaves of bread are fluffy and moist.. other days you pass out while late night baking and your dough rises to long and collapses. Well I'll be damned if you catch me throwing out bread dough. I worry not.. someone or something will eat this. Whether it be husband, child, or chicken. Waste not, want not 😎🍞Happy Friday y'all! • • • • • • #homemade #handmade #bread #foodie #fromscratch #peasantbread #homesteadlife #modernhomesteader #letsstartahomestead #homesteadkitchen

Harvesting the first of our beautiful apples. At this time of year I like to keep a
pot of apple purée in the fridge. It's delicious eaten hot or cold, the perfect
snack, or serve as an accompaniment to porridge, yoghurt / rice pudding. So
yummy, we all love it … 😋🍎

First to be planted in the new raised beds, some beautiful Rosemary. It gives off such a heady aroma and I love the smell that blows gently through our window … I see a roast dinner in our future. 🥰

It’s apple picking season again, and my kitchen is filled with the beautiful aroma of autumn baking. Apples and cinnamon, and buttery crumble … the smell is amazing and so delicious. We have baskets of apples to process and I’m so excited for the yummy treats ahead. It just makes winter more bearable … 😋
Do you have a favourite apple recipe … ?🍎🍏

It’s been a busy week in the garden, with new hens arriving (16 wks old) and their coop getting a complete revamp for spring. They’ve settled in well and seem to be really happy in their new home. We’re all looking forward to fresh eggs again. 😋
We’ve also been busy making some raised beds for our root veggies, a real blessing and makes life so much easier, especially with a sore back.
It’s also the last of our up cycled metal and I love that we’ve used every piece … nothing wasted. 😃
It’s been a job and a half to fill them, but we’re lucky enough to own horses, so there’s never a shortage of well rotted manure. Two nearly complete, two to go … 👍

Needing a light lunch, I popped out to the greenhouse to check on my radishes. After a quick look, I decided to pick some of them now and use the tender leaves in my salad. But I think I’ll wait for the others to develop a bit more, before harvesting the actual radish. Yummy and so versatile, I love that you can use the whole plant …
My kids love them too, as they grow so fast. You don’t have to wait to long to see results, harvest and then eat.
Time for lunch I think … 😋🌱👍

I’m really enjoying cooking on our log stove, and most days you’ll find a pot of soup bubbling away on top of it. It’s such an easy routine to fall into … get up, light the fire, prep the soup and then leave the pot to simmer until ready. Tonight we’re having chicken and vegetable, and I think I’ll make some lemon pancakes for dessert. So good, and the whole house smells amazing. It’s quickly becoming my favourite way to cook.
Top tip for stove top pancakes … use a sheet of Bake-O-Glide (not baking parchment paper) directly on the stove, instead of a frying pan. It works really well and the pancakes cook much quicker. I find that the thicker scotch pancake batter works best.
Anyway, hope you’re enjoying your weekend … take care 👋😊

Hi there … 👋 We’re spending the day planting some more trees. I know I say this every time, but it really makes me happy. This year we’ve decided to plant some cobnuts, just a little step closer to a self sufficient life and food security.
Alongside the cobnuts, we’re also popping in a weeping willow. We have a damp area on our land, so are really hoping this will help to dry it out … 🤞
If only it would stop raining, it would make this job so much easier … we’re dodging heavy downpours 🌧😅🌳
