I actually didn't, because I make my aura from scratch every time I do a grimdark sprite. In my mind, the aura wraps around the character, clothes included, and not just behind them. Still, I made one for you!

As with all my guides, these rules are not universal or set in stone, this is just how I go about it. Also, if you don't want to do all of these, you can always do the steps up to step three and just take the tentacles from the base and paste it in.

step one: draw your freak

step two: divide features meant to move into frames (i usually make seperate layers for each)

step three: save each frame as a separate pngs

step four: when you have the desired pngs, go to ​​​​​​Animated GIF Maker - Make GIFs from Images or Videos and import them using the "upload images" icon (I recommend doing this on pc cuz the mobile version makes it harder to readjust the order of images)

step five: rearrange the frames as necessary using the preview screen as a guide and adjust time/size to your liking

step six: download your gif!

okay so this isn't a request and i'm sorry for the botherations if this isn't allowed but how do you mimic the homestuck art style so well? it genuinely boggles my mind

my method of making sprites is, step by step

read the ask, figure out what elements i need from different sprites (ex if a character wears something else from another sprite, like an outfit swap)

find the sprites, manusly take them apart in procreate for the elements i need

put them together and draw the aspects that arnt in homestuck

and most of the elemets i actually do draw by hand. the holding hands sprites, i just simply draw the hands everytime because its eaiser.

if you just study hussies style and break down the anatomy and porportions of his art its actually pretty easy to recreate (in my opinion)

ex: most aspects are mostly these shapes

hussies style is very fluid, the straight lines are in the pixels. everything requires a nice loose flow to draw it. atleast thats how i found it to be able to be the easiest

most of it counts on your understanding of the characters enough to draw them properly, one example is me with daves hair. he has one front swoop across his forehead, sideburns, 2 back facing flips, and a little front part. and the horns are fairly easy once you understand their shape

i have a folder with like 500 memes i can turn into homestuck memes, there will be more eventually👍

There's no tutorial unfortunately, i'm just using what i learned on animation school. They teached me about how to construct characters and give them volume and i apply that to the homestuck character's sprite references. The way i draw them might seem very similar to the canon characters but they actually have a few diferences.

I built the same structure every time and then add the details. Over time you get better with poses and hands. And I can make it either very anatomical, with more detailed hands, elbows, shoulders etc. Or I can use the same structure to give them more cartoony, noodle-arms, tiny body, appearance.

i prioritize quickness in my drawings. how fast i can get an idea down without multiple steps building up to it. this of course lets me make a lot of art though, none of its really detailed. something that frustrates me about a lot of homestuck "art style" tutorials is that they can pick apart the art style all they want, give a tutorial all they want about how to draw the tiny hands or the bean feet. but not only is that not "the homestuck art style" (its simply just one of them, and most people are thinking of the xamag art style regardless) but it ignores the fact that hussies priority with the art style was not the dynamic highly practiced xamag bean feet style but quickness, due to how frequently and constantly the comic was updating, it had to be done FAST. when she isnt relying on sprites i imagine the reason so many stray pixels and so many strange shapes exist within the comic because she is working as fast as possible while staying coherent

Can I have a simplistic, non-complicated tutorial on how to sprite edit HS characters please? :3

hello! i’ve made a post about what program/brushes and tips, so you can look at those too if you want!

so, i use ibis paint and this MS paint brush:

i prefer using the MSpaint 2 brush, but you can play whatever one you prefer :]

so import the sprite you want to use and lower the opacity making it look like this:

and then i suggest drawing the hair first but you can do what you want. make multiple layers for different parts of the body, for this one i used three layers for the hair and head, coat, the rest of the body and face

then you can just color it in on a different layer.

after that, select the opacity of one of the layers and change the color of the line art, you can do this on any parts you think should have them. and in the end it will look like this:

i started years and years ago when i started reading homestuck for the first time. ive long since lost my early sprites but rest assured they were absolutely terrible. just like any other skill ive honed it through years of practice.

if u wanna start sprite editing, my recommendation is to just open the sprites in ms paint and mess around to get a feel for the style. you can grab some sprites from the mspa wiki (you'll need a webp to png converter) or there's this archive of homestuck art assets ive found very helpful. theres also a few tutorials on there too.

Homestuck Reread: Act 2, Part 3/3 (p. 615-759)

Time to finally wrap up Act 2.

John builds a tent which Rose promptly tosses out the window. Umm... based???

This is Rose's polite way of saying that she's speeding things along since John has mostly been puttering around up to this point.

How many times can Hussie write "listless octoroon" before the NAACP is notified? Seriously, what's his obsession with that phrase? Is it because it sort of borders on being a racial slur without actually being one, so he can use it to his heart's delight and not worry about being called racist? This is the same dude who made Team Special Olympics so I'm not that surprised by his sense of humor.

I'm sure this spurious anecdote of Harry Anderson accidentally chopping off some dude's finger might be amusing for some. I'm not familiar at all with him though, so this does nothing for me.

John's lazy ass sure isn't taking this whole "saving the world" thing very seriously. This is like trying to get your Sim to do chores but they'd rather play video games instead. If only this really was The Sims and she made him drown in a pool or trapped him in a room with no doors.

Rose has honestly been holding his hand the entire way, building up the path to the gate, and even killing most of the imps herself. This is really Rose's game and John is a pawn she has to nudge along toward the goal. I should really accept at this point that John is not the protagonist this story deserves.

Jade's silhouette is briefly teased during this flash where John is asleep. Hussie really wants to keep hyping her up for some reason.

Jade's conversation with John plays out similarly to the one she had with Rose. However, while Rose casts suspicion on Jade's eerie precognition, John is a moron who just goes along with whatever she says. She's straight up gaslighting him here.

Rose and Dave throwing shade at Jade behind her back, combined with the fact that neither of them told her about Sburb, makes it seem like she's an outsider in her own friend group. The way she's able to manipulate John despite the caution expressed by his other friends makes me question again why exactly she wasn't cast as a villain. The pieces are all there!

You know, Nannasprite is also selective about the info she provides to John, but it's explained that the sprites are programmed to act that way. The game intends them to be helpful little tutorial NPCs that dispense info but not too much as to spoil the mysteries of the game. What's Jade's excuse, huh? Is she an NPC too?

And she immediately changes the subject and John rolls with it because he only has one brain cell. I cannot stress enough that Jade's pesterlogs are the most aggravating thing to read thus far.

These ogres have been tailing John for quite some time. We've been getting occasional shots of them getting closer and closer, leading up to this moment. It's some good tension and buildup to what should be John's first big challenge in the game.

But instead of following up with that we go back to Dave for his confrontation with Bro. Okay I guess? I didn't mention it before, but it's a cute detail that Bro makes a reference to Dave's comic in his note.

This is a really good flash, all things considered. Maybe we can execute both fights simultaneously and establish some parallels between how John and Dave overcome their respective adversaries.

The Strider fight is interrupted so we can turn our attention to... the Wayward Vagabond. Oh yeah, there's a brief moment in the flash where it seems like we're going to pivot to Jade's intro, before we turn to WV. I don't know why Hussie keeps pretending like it's going to be so huge when she's finally introduced when all it's going to amount to is a kick in the balls.

Up to this point, we only really got to know WV through his use of the command console. I really did not care for his little "conflict" with John during this time. It wasn't funny, it dragged the pace down while these two butted heads, and it felt like an unnecessary addition to how the storytelling works. What is there to be gained by introducing these command centers where third parties can interact with the characters? If WV can talk to John, who's talking to WV? We had an established third-person, omniscient "reader" that could interact with all the characters, so I suppose it's supposed to be them. But that whole mechanic has become all but obsolete by this point.

Once again, this is not Problem Sleuth. This command interface doesn't work since the reader doesn't have any control over these characters. Hussie clearly had aims to tell his own story without user influence, so this whole storytelling device really shouldn't have existed in the first place.

WV's love of democracy and his desire to be a mayor feels at odds with how bossy he was with John. He didn't try to foster a rapport with John at all, acting more like the tyrants he very much despises.

WV's character is very erratic. He has delusions of grandeur, wishes to be respected and taken seriously, and apparently has no patience for the antics of others. He hates it when John is screwing around and also voices his displeasure when the "reader" inputs a command he finds to be nonsensical.

Yet he is also quite prone to silly behavior and quickly becomes a source of comic relief. This kind of unpredictable behavior can be explained later when we learn of the trauma he suffered on the battlefield. But looking at these antics through that lens does suck a lot of the joy out of them. It's like watching your senile grandfather playing with toy soldiers and reenacting the battles he fought in.

Knowing his backstory and how much of a tragic character WV later turns out to be, it's a little disheartening to see how the fandom at large treats him as this quirky little mascot/pet for the other characters. I don't have anything else to add to that, I just think it sucks.

Anyway, I don't mind the WV stuff too much, but I have to question why we're taking time to focus on him when we could be focusing more on the other characters' plots. This whole section is 91 pages. Surely something more productive could've been used with those pages before the act's end. Why couldn't this have waited for the next act? It's jarring to have this random bout of comic relief at a point in the story where important conflicts should be resolved.

WV finds a stockpile of Tab and becomes enamored with the drink. I don't understand why it's constantly referred to as sugary. It's a zero-sugar soda, so is that part of the joke? Tab is a really dated brand to reference. I don't even remember being it widely available by the time Homestuck was being written. So how many readers would be able to catch that joke? I don't think Hussie knew just how young his audience was going to skew.

Yes, WV's commands were a real waste of time. A rare moment of self-awareness by Hussie, even if I doubt that it registered with him.

It's worth noting that WV considers the green slime unappetizing, even though he previously ate chalk and uranium purely because they were colored green.

[S] WV: Ascend is the End of Act flash for Act 2. It's much grander than Act 1's flash in every way. Lots of great shots, and "Explore" is a really good track. It also goes to show how much more complex things have gotten since Act 1. While the previous flash was focused entirely on John, this one teases the cliffhangers for WV, Rose, Dad, and Dave's individual plots. This cast of characters is ballooning quickly and things are only going to get more convoluted from here.

Is it ever revealed who exactly built the frog temple when the meteor crashed on Earth? This was during the distant past when there wasn't even an ocean, so life didn't exist yet. Did it come into being on its own? I don't care for that.

Enter: Bro. Out of all the cliffhangers presented in this flash, this one is the most hype. Look at the imposing figure his silhouette cuts. You just know this fight is going to be big when we finally get to it.

Act 2 is a mixed bag. I appreciated Rose and Dave's segments, but John and WV's were a big letdown. The plot (or at least John's side of it) is moving along at a snail's pace when it really shouldn't have been. This should've been a big tonal shift where we leave reality and are plunged into the game's world, yet it's mostly trudging along at the same unhurried pace as the previous Act.

The Act should've been very straightforward. It presents us with a clear goal quite early on: John needs to get to the gate that's far out of reach. Okay, how is that accomplished? By John futzing around, arguing with WV, and occasionally fighting imps and collecting grist. Not exactly the most engaging means of solving this problem. And by the end of it, he hasn't even reached the gate! Nothing of note has been accomplished.

We learn about punch card alchemy and more about the cosmology of the Furthest Ring, but I honestly couldn't care less about this world building. It's all so expository and the story takes a great big halt whenever we have to read about it. Yeah Hussie, it sure is cool how you can craft items by combining their cards. It's also great how you made this chess society that's perpetually at war. I sure hope this has some payoff and isn't just window dressing to disguise how little the plot has actually progressed.

I was hoping this Act would lift my spirits and get me engaged with the comic, but all this meandering has left me discouraged. Maybe Act 3 will be better? Oh wait, that's the real Jade-heavy Act, isn't it? Oh fu-

Hi there! Sorry it took so long, it took me a while to find the time to really sit down and commit. I pretty much just wrote down my process step by step, but I hope it will be useful to somebody! I like seeing homestuck sprites, and I am always happy to encourage newcomers.

its definitely tougher now since they went to the SURFACE already, but i bet i could work with it.

i know Troy functions as sort of the protagonist which jesus christ. unlucky. mans definitely NOT getting a pacifist ending now!! (points over at him, covered in blood and gore)

the thing abt ut au is that Troy and Frisk go through a pretty similar thing at the beginning if u think abt it!!

He fell down a big pit (flowers didnt break his fall, but trash is good enough), he then met SOME sort of villain of the story because he got kidnapped (also in pitch darkness, like Flowey was + u can equal being tied to a chair to being trapped in a small box surrounded by bullets) AND he met someone who functions as a tutorial for this new world hes entered (although Blink is way more unwilling than Toriel is😭😭)

i feel like if this was in game form, Blink would start off more like.. you know undertale yellow? Dalv is there, the vampire guy, and he spends like all the ruins Running Away from you before you meet him at the very end. I imagine it would be more like that, but he'd actually teach you stuff the few times you meet him. I'll figure out the logistics!!

Aeon is definitely like the Undyne equivalent. Because she's definitely after them, very scary and angry, but she's actually chill as hell (atleast i'm HOPING Aeon pls be my friend please)

Idk how exactly Ripley and The Inventor will work in this sort of?? situation? OR the Overseer

Like the Overseer was definitely built up as this huge threat - an Asgore level threat - but i'm unsure if he is?? I just have to wait for more wonderlust to come out😭😭

Oh!! And like, regions wise

For sure Reclaim is the beginning area, maybe with like a turn u can take, or you can fall further down into the Trench maybe? And Oasis Flora could be chill like Waterfall is

I certainly don't need to plan all of this so logistically, and should think about it more lore wise, but this helps with making art for it i think

OH and Troy, Runt and Blink definitely team up. Which is more Deltarune like, especially since Troy KEEPS wanting to kill people and they keep having to stop him

sure!

ill go step by step.

ill use the ask im currently working on as an example

the person asked for a kankri edit with meenahs braids and a few other assets. so step one is to go to the MSPA wiki and take the sprites for editing

then download the sprites off of the wiki page

open your program of choice (i use procreate on ipad)

import both of the sprites

take the assets of each sprite that you need, i only need meenahs braids from her sprite, so ill just take that and erase the rest of her sprite

the ask speficied for 4-2 braids on each side, i chose to do 2 on each. but meenah dosnt have braids on the other side so i just hand drew them instead of copy pasting them to the other side

they also asked for scruffy hair, so i will have to redraw his hair

so to do that i erase his hair

rough out the new shape

fill it in

touch it up a bit

add more hair to his bangs

next they asked for rectangular glasses, thats fairly easy, i just draw them like this

last is an "obnoxiously big turtle neck" and ill make it like this

sketch out the shape

fill in

continue the pattern from the orignial sprite

crop

remove background

and youre done!

these are the brushes i use/used

i mainly only use 1 pixel and 3 pixel brushes sometimes 5 or 7 if its a panel edit. RARELY do i use the dithering brushes, thats for shading if i need it but its very hard to shade that way

ATTENTION ALL HOMESTUCKS

for the past ~2 years, i've been attempting to create an archive of every single homestuck base i could find, at first for personal usage, but eventually for the sake of simply archiving them. sprite bases, hero mode templates, furniture/item customs and rips, talksprite bases, even tutorials, i've been trying to find anything i can.

however, because of the fact that a lot of these images were hosted on now defunct image hosting sites like majhost and were never archived on the wayback machine, i'm unable to reach them through the various pile of dead links i have.

so this is an all call for all members of the homestuck fandom, especially those who've been here for a while.

i'm attempting to create a legitimate archive of these bases, with sources wherever possible. so if you have anything that fits that sort of description, or even seems like it would fit, please send it my way in my DMs.
