Two years ago tomorrow I lost my father. Ten days later, I lost my mother.

Dad wasn't a surprise, he'd elected to discontinue chemo a couple months before and we all knew it was only a matter of time.

Dad went loopy in his last couple of weeks. He got paranoid and very confused about where he was and why he was there. He called his house-cleaner from the hospice ward at 3am one night and told her that he'd been discharged from the hospital and was standing on a street corner and didn't know where he was. She called me in a panic - because she cared about him. Rather than calling him immediately, I called the hospital and had the nurses check on him.

As expected, he was in his bed, and by that time, apparently asleep. I called him anyway, and he told me that he was in a hospital on Sesame Street and he didn't know the address. He was quite agitated and said that there were kids running around and the grown-ups didn't know what they were doing. I eventually convinced him that he was safe where he was and that I would see him the next day. I think the nurses took his cell phone away the next morning. That was the point where he started speaking in rhyme.

After a week in the hospice ward, they moved him to a nursing home. As requested by the facility, I brought him some personal items, a couple family pictures and some clothes from his apartment. On day 1, he was still kinda sedated from the transfer. On day 2, he was speaking exclusively in rhyme, and mostly nonsensical. Though he did get across that he didn't trust me because I worked for the government, and somebody had put him in a facility. Day 3 I visited again and told him that he didn't need to rhyme. His response was "Oh good, I'm terrible at that." For the first time in weeks, we had a coherent conversation and I caught him up on the situation and how he got where he was. He was engaged and responsive, and seemed to understand everything I was telling him.

Near the end of the visit, I told him that my fiancee and I were going out of town for 5 days to visit my mother and stepfather in another state. He told me that he didn't think he'd still be around when we got back. I said goodbye to him and then went and cried in my car in the parking lot for half an hour before I could drive home. That was the first time I'd cried in years.

I drove home and told my fiancee what happened, then cried on her shoulder for another half hour.

We were due to board a plane about 10am the next morning, so were doing some last minute packing when I got a call from the nursing home that his O2 sats were dropping and he was nonresponsive. He died about 10pm that evening and I got the wonderful experience of coordinating between the hospice company, the nursing home, and the cremation center that I'd chosen (expecting that it would be weeks yet). I was finally able to pick up Dad's personal effects from the nursing home after midnight that night.

We made our flight and went to visit Mom. This was the first time she and my fiancee met face to face.

Part of the reason we were visiting when we were is that my brother had called me and told me that Mom's dementia was getting worse. She was almost 80, and had started losing time and her notoriously bad memory was getting far worse.

As expected, she and my fiancee hit it off immediately and the visit went swimmingly. I had a couple calls with my therapist and had family around me to share the grief. I drank too much, smoked too much, and ate way too much, but had a good trip all things considered.

Four days after we got home from the visit, my brother (who lives in the next town over from Mom) called and said that mom was in the hospital, and not expected to make it. She had choked on breakfast, and was nonresponsive by the time the paramedics arrived. She lasted just over a day in the hospital, and never regained consciousness. My brother was with her when she stopped breathing.

This year, the anniversary of Dad's death falls on Father's Day. Irony, no? Dad was difficult, and we often didn't get along. Still, I miss him. I miss Mom more, but she lived halfway across the country from me, and was mostly my brother's problem.

What sparked this post was a song by Dessa that came on while I was organizing the garage this afternoon. The song is "I hope I'm wrong" from her album Chime. It's a song about losing her mother and the immediate aftermath. For some reason, despite having listened to that album several times in the years since my parents died, the song hit me like a truck today and I burst into tears in the middle of my garage. When I looked it up on YouTube so I could send it to my wife (no longer fiancee), listening to it again made me burst into tears in the kitchen.

Both of my parents were difficult people, and I had some pretty strictly enforced boundaries with both of them for the last decade or so of their lives. I still miss them.

Cultivating Strength and Compassion as Caregivers of Dementia Patients

Transcending The Happily Ever After Myth

Joseph Campbell wrote that "the purpose of life is to find joy amidst suffering." Successful couples manage to be happy together much of the time despite Life Challenges.

Once upon a time, over two decades ago, my husband and I wrote a book together called The New Marriage: Transcending the Happily Ever After Myth. The main theme of our book was the ability to let go of myths about marriage and embrace reality—When We read fairytales to Merritt, the granddaughter, we changed the ending. Instead of saying the couple married "and lived happily ever after" we'd say, "they began the work of making a good and happy marriage."

 As a psychotherapist, I have been inspired by the work of Stephen Levine and his work with the terminally ill. He writes about "sacred spaciousness" so that patients and caregivers can make room in their minds for the pain and the grace of the moment. I now know firsthand how heartwarming and heartbreaking it is to care for a cherished family member suffering from a chronic condition. Robert, my beloved husband of 33 years, has advanced dementia. He often doesn't recognize me. Just today, he remarked to me, "You look familiar. I have seen you around here quite often. "He may not know me, but I know him.

This is the last chapter of a long love story.

Recently, we renewed our vows—a reminder and promise of togetherness till the end. It helps me find strength by seeking and creating moments of joy amidst suffering. One night before Christmas, when I walked into the bedroom, Robert looked up and told me he had seen me at work many times. He added that he found me smart and attractive and wanted to marry me. What his mind did not remember, his heart still knew. My heart still knows.

His memory, in part, was true; we had worked together as colleagues at a mental health center decades ago. He could not remember that we were already married and had been for decades. I joyfully said yes to this second marriage proposal; we renewed our vows in the company of our family, with our pastor's son performing the ceremony. Robert could not stand, but his longtime friend supported him from his medical school days. So much grace surrounded us that night.

One night after the vow renewal celebration, Robert seemed to know who I was and became protective. My husband had been healthy and worked as a psychiatrist for most of his life. He seemed to think he was protecting me because he told me that I needed to go find someone else because he was now "ugly and dumb." It hurt me that he would feel like that about himself, and I reassured him that I would never leave. With the help of the family and Hospice, we have been able to keep him at home. I am grateful that I am healthy and can care for him. 

My adult son saw the toll that caregiving alone was taking on me and offered to move his family from Virginia to help. Having his family here has brought so many moments of joy and opportunities to practice sacred spaciousness. Robert loves having family around. Merritt, the granddaughter we read about relationships, is now pregnant with a great-grandchild named after Robert. She calls weekly from Chicago. No matter where the conversation with Robert takes them, she sounds interested and responds appropriately. Recently, he believed that we were at a campground and she went with the story and ask him all about the tents. Later, I pretended to escort out a wild turkey that he imagined was in the room with us. I later laughed with the family, because there was no way I would get near a wild turkey! I live the lesson that humor can be like a gentle rain that carries away some pent-up tension. I also have good friends who understand my situation because they are also caregivers. I can call them at any hour to vent, share my feelings, and, finally, to laugh.

Being chronically ill can be a heavy burden—too many people can attest to that. What fewer people mention is that caring for a chronically ill loved one takes its toll, too. The caretakers of those who have dementia or Alzheimer's are often referred to as the "second patient" because of the intense physical and emotional demands of this type of caretaking. It's easy to feel burned out, worn down, psychologically distressed, or even resentful when motivated by guilt, a sense of duty, social pressure, or greed. On the other hand, caregivers who combine duty with the desire to show loving-kindness and genuinely protect the person they care for are those who experience fewer negative emotions. Such caring is associated with positive feelings, positive brain chemicals, including oxytocin and dopamine, and the increased likelihood of reaching out to others for help and support. 

The National Institute of Health cites that the majority of caregivers enjoy the positive experiences that foster togetherness with their loved ones: shared activities, bonding, spiritual and personal growth, increased faith, and feelings of accomplishment and mastery. When duty and desire are aligned, there is increased fulfillment and reduced psychological distress. Caretakers of those with chronic conditions—just like chronic patients themselves—can individually become better or bitter based on their capacity for loving kindness toward themselves and others.

A happy and sustainable relationship bypasses fairytale notions about marriage and happens when two people deal together with the vicissitudes of life. Although it takes work, resilience, faith, compassion, and the conscious choice to confront—and not run from—life's challenges.

To overcome these challenges and find purpose in life, it is important to celebrate life together. I find many moments of light as a caregiver for my husband. And its life-affirming, hope-igniting, and heart-warming to pursue and celebrate love as this lasting light. It is easy to give and receive love when the going is easy, the sun is shining, our cares are few, and the romance is fresh. It is harder— fulfilling—to share love when the road is littered with challenges, the day has darkened, and time or trouble has made us (in the words of Yeats) feel old and grey and full of sleep. But that is where we find true love, the love that is consciously cultivated brings opportunities for transformation of the mind and spirit. As I write this, my husband peacefully sleeps, and the door is open to our wooded backyard on a beautiful day. I take time to mindfully experience the miracles around us and feel gratitude that the love of my life is still beside me.

West Lebanon, NH - Beverlee Hastings Merrill, age 90, widow of the late Joseph H. Merrill, Jr., passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2022, at the home of her daughter, Nancy Peavey, in Enfield, NH.

Born at home on November 21, 1932, in Corinth, VT, to George and Bernice (Huntley) Hastings, she attended the small village Cookeville School, graduated from the Bradford Academy, Class of 1950, and attended Bob Jones University, Greenville, SC.

She moved to Hanover, NH, in 1952 to work at Dartmouth College Library. She married Joseph Merrill of Hanover at the United Church of Christ at Dartmouth College on September 15, 1956. He pre-deceased her on July 22, 1998. Married for almost 42 years, they spent most of their married life in the Hanover/Lebanon area as Joe pursued his career in Printing Management and they had their four children – Lisa, Lori, Nancy and Jonathan. Joe grew with Dartmouth Printing Co. In 1988, after 31 years with Dartmouth Printing, they moved out of town for the next eight years – first to Stratham on the NH seacoast for a position with Bradford & Bigelow in Danvers, MA, and then to The Printing House/Homes & Land magazine in Tallahassee, FL. They returned "home" to Lebanon in 1996 to be near their large, extended families.

Employed in the health care field for many years, Beverlee become a unit secretary at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center for 11 years (1977-1988). When moving to the NH Seacoast, she found fulfillment as a one-to-one companion with Interim and the Portsmouth Regional Private Duty Association in Hampton Beach, Rye Beach, Exeter, Portsmouth and Kittery Point, ME (1989-1991) and then in Tallahassee FL (1991-1996). She was deeply committed to the elderly, especially those with acquired memory-loss disorders. To make their days and moments special, she became a compassionate activity assistant/educator at the Leon County Adult Day Care Center in Tallahassee for three years, and upon returning to the Upper Valley, at Genesis Health Care/Lebanon Center for the next six years (1996-2002). For years after her retirement from Genesis, her former co-workers and residents' families told her they remembered her as "that Hat Lady" in her many vintage, decorative crazy hats.

She was a Hospice volunteer for 23 years, beginning in the early years of the Hospice movement in the Upper Valley. She went on to connect with Seacoast Hospice in the Exeter-Portsmouth area and Big Bend in Tallahassee before returning to be a volunteer again in the Upper Valley after her retirement.

Retirement to Beverlee was "simply shifting gears" with time to read all night, take long naps, do some traveling with friends and family – and time to delve more deeply into family genealogy and local history. She drove about to Town Clerk's offices seeking out documents of her ancestors' births, deaths and marriages, making copies, gathering them, with their stories, into notebooks as a legacy for her children and future descendants. With the help of her nephew Kevin Hurst, she produced a book – Bev's Memories. She gave copies of the book to her children, her siblings and cousins.

She got her wish to do some traveling with family and friends, visiting Scotland, Nova Scotia, Arizona, Colorado, California, the Smoky Mountains and multiple trips to Florida to visit her sisters and old Tallahassee friends. She flew to Minnesota to finally meet a pen pal she had connected with while both were in grade school.

Moving to the Quail Hollow senior living community in 2007, she remained active locally in the Lebanon Woman's Club and the Rusty Reds and Scarlett O'Hatters of Quail Hollow's Red Hat chapters. Gradually slowed down by a weak back and poor balance, her passion for social interaction and involvement never wavered. She took great pride in being the overseer of the Quail Hollow Bi-Annual Give Away-Take Away Weekends, the Kilton-Quail Hollow Lending Library project and Quail's rotating art galleries.

She is survived by her loving family – her four children, Lisa (Dean) Rowe of Shrewsbury, MA, Lori Kay of White River Junction, VT, Nancy (Jeff) Peavey of Enfield, NH, and Jonathan (Sue) Merrill of West Lebanon, NH; her ten grandchildren, Allison (Jim) Ladio, Stephanie (Tyler) Frost, David Rowe, Andrew Kay, Leslie Kay, Benjamin Peavey, Joshua (Megan) Peavey, Nathan Peavey, Jessica (Brendan) Demich, Lindsey Merrill; and six great-grandchildren, Rowen and Salem Ladio, Ava and Wesley Peavey, Zoe Frost and Cecilia Demich.

She is also survived by her sister Peg Wilmott of Naples, FL, and brother David (Sue) Hastings of North Haverhill, NH; and multiple sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. She will be remembered by 30 nieces and nephews and their families, and many cousins.

In addition to her loving husband, Joseph Merrill, she was pre-deceased by her sisters Joyce Chapman and Bernice (Bunny) Hurst, her brother George (Bert) Hastings, as well as multiple sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Her remains have been cremated and will be scattered by her family at locations that were especially meaningful to Beverlee. She wished that there be no calling hours or services.

You stared blankly at the screen, the number flashing across your mothers phone, you just got here, it couldn't happen so fast, there’s no way. No one could move, your brother sat beside you already balling his fists, trying to hold back the tears as your mother started calling out for your father, who we all knew was gone now. You finally picked up the phone at the last second, answering before it could go to voicemail. “Is this Mrs. Y/L/N?” The nurse from the hospice center spoke coldly, you’re heart broke, “this is her daughter.” You answered, hands shaking, the words she muttered you didn't think you’d ever forget. “I’m sorry to tell you that Mr. Y/L/N passed at 6:47 this evening.” Her voice was level, you couldn't blame her, she probably made these calls everyday, but still anger coursed through you. Not at her, but at everything, at life, at god. Why would he take your father so soon? He was only 60, far too young to have suffered for over ten years the way he did. “We’re on our way.” You managed to whisper out as your mother clung to you, she screamed your dads name, as if he would appear, as if he would have never left. But, we all knew that wasn't the case. You couldn't bring yourself to cry, as horrible as it sounded, you were almost relieved, that he wouldn't suffer anymore, that you wouldn't have to watch him struggle to walk from one side of the house to the other without losing his breath. The car ride to the hospice center was a long one, despite your sister in law running nearly every red light to get there. Your mom cried the whole time, your brother angrily stared out the window, guilt eating at him for not spending more time with his father before he left. You, you just sat there, sadness rushing through your veins as you still couldn't bring the tears to fall, you watched out the window as the god forsaken building came into view, all that you could hear as you expertly made your way down the hallways were the last words you’re father told you before he was too out of it to communicate. 

“I love you, baby, take care of your brother, okay?” 

“Of course, daddy, I love you too.” 

That was three days ago, the day they told you it was lung cancer, the day you came rushing over from work because the doctor needed to talk to the whole family. The day you called your brother and told him your dad was going to die, the day you went home and cried yourself to sleep on the floor with the dog, who himself was whining, already knowing that his favorite person was never going to come home. Your mind went to Freddie as you walked in, he was away, the hockey season had just started, and you told him your dad wasn't doing good, but you didn't admit to him just how bad, thinking you surely had a couple of weeks left, you knew Freddie would leave in a heartbeat to come be with you, and your mother who he had grown to love almost as much as his own. 

You entered the room, freezing in the doorway as you saw him laid out on the bed, you knew what to expect, you knew what he would look like, you had seen your grandmother like this just a year before, but it made your gut wrench to see your dad so lifeless, the color already leaving his skin. “I’m gonna be sick.” You mumbled, rushing towards the bathroom, your brother tried to follow you to make sure you were okay, but you locked the bathroom door. You heard your mom telling him to let it go, knowing it wouldn't do anything but make it worse for you. You kneeled over the toilet, crying as you emptied your stomach. Instant relief hitting you, but after you flushed it, you sat on the floor, leaning against the wall, sobbing, finally, letting the emotions out. You tearfully pulled your phone out, eyes blurry with water as you shakily dialed Freddie’s number, you knew it was the middle of the game, he wouldn't see this for another hour or two at least, but you needed to tell him now, before the funeral planning got underway. As you figured, the phone call went to voicemail. “Freddie,” you paused, letting out a cry, knowing it was going to kill him, but you couldn't help it, “he’s gone, and, I-I-uh-I need you, please.” You whimpered into the phone hanging up right after. You didn't want to go through personally telling all your friends so as tacky as it might seem, you posted a picture of you and your father from when you were little, writing a simple caption, “heaven gained another angel tonight, love you always daddy” posting it and silencing your phone as you rinsed your mouth, walking out to join your grieving family. Your brother was by the window, his wife draped over his back, as if she could absorb his sadness. Your mother sat blankly by the foot of the bed, hardly being able to look at her husband laid there like that. “I love you, mom.” You whispered sitting beside her, you were the rock of the family, always, so she didn't hesitate to rest her head on her shoulder as she started crying for the millionth time tonight. You once again sat blankly, staring at your shoes, not wanting to imprint the image further into your brain.

You had all since gone back to your house, you went straight to your fathers office, already starting to sort through things, you knew you should take a moment, you knew you should let yourself grieve, but you couldn't. You took a garbage bag from the kitchen, bringing it with you and shutting yourself in there, your brother came in for a while, only telling you what he wanted to take back home with him for his kids. You gave him those items and he let you be, he was never good with his emotions, let alone dealing with yours. You had forgotten to turn your ringer back up on your phone so when you pulled it out to check the time you were shocked to see seven missed calls from Freddie, but one message that made relief hit you like a truck. 

“I’m coming, the plane lands in thirty minutes.” That was sent well over an hour ago, only then did you realize it was nearing one am, you walked out of the office, your sister in law and brother sitting on the couch watching some Adam Sandler movie, your mother had gone to bed, the dog trailing along with her, keeping her company as if he could feel the pain radiating off of her. “Freddie will be here soon.” You announced softly, your brother nodded blankly, he got along well enough with Freddie, but you knew deep down Freddie had a certain level of disrespect for your brother, seeing how poorly he has treated you in the past, but Freddie was more of a man despite being younger than your brother, so you knew he wouldn't act on it. You sat down on the love seat, not wanting to be near them, but not wanting to be alone again, your mind wandered as you thought of how well Freddie and your dad had gotten along, it always made you happy, and your dad had been the one to realize you two would last before even you did. “You’re going to marry him one day, Y/N, wether I’m here or not, just know that I love him.” That memory brought tears to your eyes, and you shot up when you saw headlights outside, the uber dropping Freddie off in front of your house. You ran out the door, not caring how loud you were. “Freddie!” You shouted, making him whip around in the dark as he pulled his suitcase out of the trunk. He nearly dropped it down to the ground, not caring as he rushed to meet you. “Y/N, I’m so sorry, baby, so so sorry.” He whispered, kissing the top of your head repeatedly as you began to cry against him, “I wish I had been here, but I’m not going anywhere now, I promise.” He added making you nod against him, he shuffled to grab his bag with you still clung to him. “Come on, love, it’s cold outside, let’s go inside.” He shushed you, carefully walking with his free arm around you as the other pulled his suitcase along. 

You entered the house, finally loosening your grip on him as Max your dog came barreling out of the room, tail thumping in excitement at the sight of your boyfriend. He reached down to pet the dog as you stayed glued to his side, not wanting to release the comforting grip he had on you. He slowly let go of you to greet your brother and sister in law, you let out an inaudible whimper when he let go of you, as soon as he released you he was back to you. Wrapping you up in his hold again as your brother and his wife made their way to the guest room. “Did you want to get some sleep?” He asked softly, toying with your hair as you nuzzled your face into his neck. You nodded softly, allowing him to lead you to your room, he knew this house like the back of his hand, “wait.” You muttered all of a sudden, letting go of him and walking into your dads office, you took the framed photo of you and him, bringing it into your room and placing it on your dresser, Freddie smiled softly pressing a soft kiss to your temple, before pulling out one of his shirts for you. “I know you’re going to want to take a shower.” He whispered, also knowing your routine like his own, you always wanted to shower after a long day, so you gave him a quick kiss, before trudging into the bathroom.

You let yourself get lost in the shower, meanwhile Freddie quietly made his way to your dads office, he went straight towards the closet, opening the doors slowly as he knew otherwise they would squeak, and he carefully opened the filing cabinet, and could tell by the later of dust on the handle that it probably hadn’t been touched since the day your father showed it to him. He reached in and felt around in the dark, letting out a relieved breath as he felt the small box. He pulled it out, and his eyebrows knit together as their was a note folded up and taped to it. He quickly opened it up, after checking to make sure the ring was still securely in the box, he smiled down at it, it was your grandmothers, and it was ko seceret to anyone that you wanted it to be your engagement ring. He had talked to your father months ago when he started going down hill, and he told Freddie where he hid the ring.

“Alright, Freddie, if you’re reading this note, obviously I didn’t stick around long enough to see this moment. You know you have my blessing to marry Y/N, you treat her better than I ever could’ve imagined, don’t let her go, son. Hold on tight to her... if you’re reading this the day I pass, which knowing my daughter you will be, in fear of her getting rid of the filling cabinet with this still in it. Hold on to this ring, give her some time, you’ll know when the moment is right.”

Freddie couldn’t help but let out a tearful chuckle at the so blatantly forward note your father had left, he heard the shower turn off and quickly made his way out of there, hiding the ring and the note in his suitcase. He changed into some sleeping clothes as your feet started padding down the hallway, “come here.” He whispered, laying back on the bed, you threw your dirty clothes into the corner, not caring enough to do anything else as you crawled in beside him, his large shirt fitting you like a short dress. You pushed your wet hair back and laid your head on his chest, “I love you, Freddie.” You whispered, tracing the pattern on his shirt, “I love you, Y/N.” He sighed in return, giving you an extra squeeze, silently telling you he’d always be here, no matter what.

And it’s true, he was, through all the funeral planning, through both your mother and your own breakdowns, he sat between you too at the funeral, you curled into his side, well he held your moms hand tightly, doing his best to comfort you both as your brother spiraled. He did everything you asked him too and then some, you mentioned needing to grocery shopping, and he offered, not giving you the chance to say no, but you went with him, needing to be out of the house, but he did it all. When your sister in law made the executive decision to have your two young nieces at the funeral-something you completely disagreed with-he helped entertain them, play with them, wiped their tears away when your brother was too busy in his own head to notice. Anyone who had seen the two of you doing all this would think it was your own family, and that made your heart break even more as it was the night after the funeral. Your brother and his family staying until the morning before making the four hour drive back to their home, you woke to a soft knock on your door. Freddie was out like a light, and he deserved to be, handling all these emotions by himself, so you carefully slid out of his grip, not noticing how he stirred when you did so. You opened the door and frowned as you saw your oldest niece, who was still only 7 standing in your doorway, her stuffed animal hugged to her chest, and tears littering her cheeks. “Sweetie, are you okay?” You soothed, kneeling down to her height, she shook her head, “mommy and daddy were arguing, I couldn’t sleep.” She explained to you and you had to hold back a sigh at how ridiculous your brother and his wife were. “Can I stay with you and uncle Freddie?” She whimpered, and your heart burst, she’d never called him that before. “Of course.” Freddie called from the bed, making you jump a little, “come on.” You held your hand out, she took it and followed you into the room, you turned your bedside lamp on, knowing she was scared of the dark. She climbed into the bed and instantly looked exhausted as she became sandwiched between you and your longtime boyfriend. He smiled when she pulled his hand to be on her, he kissed the top of her head, and then did the same to you, calming your nerves as you watched her breathing even out and her eyes rest peacefully.

“Uncle Freddie has a nice ring to it.” You whispered, he let out a breathy laugh, glancing down at the peacefully sleeping girl, he adored them, and it never failed to make your heart swell, he fit right in with your family. “It does.” He answered, thinking of how it will become permanent when he proposes to you in the morning.

You woke to both of your nieces jumping onto you, you let a groan out dramatically as you got smothered. “Good morning to you too, girls.” You teased, tickling their sides as you looked up to see Freddie in the doorway. “Girls, can you give me and aunt Y/N a minute?” He asked and they nodded, scurrying out of your room, you pushed yourself up in the bed, smiling at your boyfriend. He brought you a cup of coffee and placed it on your nightstand before pressing a gentle kiss to your lips. “Good morning.” He whispered, fingers tangled in your messy hair. You smiled, your first genuine smile in almost a week as you took in the man before you, “good morning.” You responded happily, of course your heart still ached, but it was always easier to get through it when Freddie was here. “I don’t know if it’s the right time, and I don’t have a whole speech prepared, but this is just something I feel like I have to do.” He trailed off, going over to his suitcase, you furrowed your brows, watching him mutter to himself before standing triumphantly. The second he turned and you saw the oh so familiar red box, your heart skipped a beat, your eyes welled up with tears, for the first time in a long time, they were for good reasons. Your hands shot to your mouth as he nervously kneeled beside the bed, “yes!” You shrieked out, he shook his head in laughter, “can I ask first baby?” He joked, but you muttered an oh shit before nodding. “Y/N, will you marry me?” He skipped the whole spcheel, and you didn’t need to hear it anyways, just what he’s done for you and your family in the past week has shown how much he loves you. “Yes!” You shrieked out again, nearly tackling him to the ground in a hug, you peppered kisses all over his face before finally landing on his lips, giving him a kiss full of love. “Where’d you find it?” You questioned, you’d been looking for the ring for years, and your dad always said it was in a safe place. Freddie slipped the diamond ring on your finger, and of course, it fit perfectly. You looked up at him through your lashes as he did so, seeing the focus on his face as he did such a simple, life changing task. “Your dad told me where he hid it a few months ago.” Freddie admitted and you couldn’t help but let a laugh fall from your lips, that was so something he would do, “of course he did.”

Light On The Other Side

A Lumity Fic in which a green-haired angel of death falls in love with a mortal spirit made of light 

There are those who say that Death is a creature of ill will; a monster who in one fell swoop would reap your soul, rending your life from your body without a second thought, perhaps even laughing while doing so. The dark, skeletal, and evil depictions of Death, however, are entirely incorrect. 

Death and their angels do not pick or chose who they will ferry to the Beyond, or when it is time to leave. Death is simply drawn to the extinction of one's life, extending a guiding hand to the lost, and offering answers to the confused. They are the ones who protect the wayward souls whose lives have come to an end. 

Though the end isn't always final.

Walking through the Door to the Beyond with a Kiss from an angel of Death is to step into a new life with bountiful luck and fortune, and they are believed to live long, wondrous lives. 

This is what the pale hooded figure had explained to the small child, who was taken from his world much sooner than was deemed fair. They stand before one another in an overcrowded bedroom filled with hospice care equipment and mourning family, frozen in their places as the reaper spoke to the translucent spirit of the red-headed child. 

Terminal cancer had spread through the child's small body with the fury of a raging inferno; the pale guide had been around long enough to see the strength of the child's lifeline wither and wilt, until finally, many suffering months later, the lifeline had gone entirely.

"So," the child mutters, looking back to where he can see his family gathered around his small body settled on the gurney, "I'm dead?"

The hooded guide nods, solemn. "Yes, sweet Braxus. I'm afraid so."

Young Braxus nods slowly, wrapping his mind around the concept. "Am I going to the bad place?"

The guide gives a small, forced smile, and kneels before Braxus. "No, little one. You're going to a much kinder place," she soothes, placing a small kiss to his brilliant red hair as she takes a key from around her neck. "You will be going to a place that will treat you with much more kindness than was given to you in this life."

The guide presses the key into the air before the two, which disappears halfway with the sound of a resonating click. An ornate door folds out from the air, a brilliant golden eye blinking down at them from its center. 

"Wait!" The young child pauses, staring wide-eyed at the door, his grip on the guides hand vice-like. "What's your name?"

The guide startles at the question, having hardly been asked as such, but smiles regardless, lowering the hood of the cloak around her shoulders. Rich green hair falls into place, and soft, golden eyes watch Braxus's curious brown ones. 

"Not many have bothered to ask an Angel of Death their name," the guide says, "but you may know me as Amity."

Braxus lowers his head, his eyes wet. "I'm going to forget you, aren't I, Amity?"

The green-haired guide gives another nod, standing before the child. "Yes," she says, "but you will go on to make new memories, Braxus. You will live a life full of love, laughter, and joy. You will run in the warmth of the sun, bathe in the coolness of the ocean, and you will know what it is to love freely."

Braxus watches the golden eyes peering down at him with wonder. "Can you see the future? How can you be so sure?"

The smile given to Braxus is a genuine one this time, small and serene. "I cannot see the future, but I know that my blessing will work."

"But how do you know?"

The guide ponders the question for a time, knowing that the two of them could stand there, frozen in this instant, while the green-haired reaper explained the precise reasons as to why she knows it will work. But they would be standing around all day, and quite frankly, Amity had much more work to be done. 

"I know," she eventually says, "because I have seen the past of all of those I've ferried before. Many of whom had received a blessing from one of my kind, and all of those who had received one had gone to live such lives."

Braxus ponders the green-haired girl's words for a time before a broad grin spread over his features. "Okay," he says with finality, latching onto Amity's leg in a hug. 

"Are you ready, Braxus?"

He parts from her, nodding his head, and his spirit starts to glow. "Good-bye, Miss Amity," he says, stepping back into the doorway and into his new life. "Thank you for everything." 

In a flash of light, the boy is gone, and the light from the doorway has vanished. Amity stares through the now dark and void open door, pondering. 

In all her ferrying years, the countless lifetimes she's seen come and go, watching the spirits of the departed never seems to get any easier. For many of them, like young Braxus, it takes days, perhaps weeks, and sometimes even months, before a wayward soul is ready to depart the world of the living. Those tortured and unwilling are left to their own devices until they are good and ready to move on. 

Amity often views it as a blessing and a curse; to wander the world of the living, unseen and unheard by those who still cling to life, helping those who have lost their own, while being unable to keep any of the bonds she forges. 

It is a dark and lonely life, to be in the employ of Death. Thinking back on her time before makes her chest feel heavy, and she shakes the thought from her head. 

Now is not the time to dwell on such memories. 

Another wayward has appeared nearby, and it draws her near.

Nature Documentarian!Kylo Ren x Marine Biologist!Reader

I touched on this one a little bit in my post about it here, but I just cannot stop thinking about the possibilities for this AU especially in an ‘acquaintances-to-enemies-to-tentative friends-back to-enemies- and finally to-lovers’ dynamic. 

They’re stuck on a boat for 6 months together with literally no one else as they follow the migration pattern in the hopes to see these whales and NOT ONLY do they make a groundbreaking scientific discovery, but they also fall in love along the way. 

And also it’s the 1970s because that makes everything much more difficult for them and I like to watch people suffer lmao 

Cyberpunk/Futuristic Dystopian AU 

Okay I have very few coherent thoughts about this but I’ve really been vibing on the idea of it being the year 3021 or something cliche (no shade to cliches I love them and use them all the time). I’m talkin’ the works -- dark dilapidated cities like New New York, climate has gone to shit so everyone needs to wear special protective clothing, there’s bionic implants to the point that some people are more machine than human (maybe Kylo is one of them like his grandfather before him???). 

I don’t know exactly where reader and kylo fit in yet, but i really love the idea that they try to overthrow the existing puppet-government of Snoke’s rule to take over the throne for themselves. A rebellious faction but not in the way that the canon Resistance is, definitely still evil but a different kind of evil lol. 

Fine Arts College AU 

Kylo and reader are both students at Arkanis University or something pretentious, in the graduate fine arts program. Kylo is a blacksmith and reader is a glassblower -- two things that should seem to be polar opposites but aren’t really, not when you get down to the essences of the artform. They meet because the university’s studios are right next to one another because they both need to use the furnaces, and it’s a classic case of growing from your misunderstandings and pre-conceived notions of people, art, and the world. 

Hospice AU

(this one is sad tbh i have no real excuse for it other than i’ve been sad lately)

Kylo’s mother is dying, reader’s grandfather is nearing the end of his long life. You meet because their rooms at the Hospice care center are just down the hall from one another. Kylo has never had a good relationship with his mother and he’s come home to spend her final days together and try to mend the pieces of the life he shattered for her when he murdered Han. 

Reader’s grandfather is a Holocaust survivor, who had a very good and long life once he was freed. Kylo’s jealous of the relationship you have with him, and through your time together (you seem to always show up to visit at the same time) you and Kylo learn about life, love, and the meanings of family.
