The crowd in the great hall dispersed after King Viserys the first of his name declared the ceremony over. She saw the lords from the north already proceeding and the Stark head giving her a last look. She didn't know exactly why she waited until almost all of them had disappeared. Maybe it was the hope to still see Rhaenyra. Or maybe it was just something else, something she wasn't sure of yet. She left her seat with a last look at the throne before she went towards the door. She was about to walk through when she heard a voice behind her, ,,Lady Y/n I hope the crown's recognition has arrived? Otto Hightower stood in front of her with his daughter standing beside him with a gentle smile as she turned around. The young Mormont bowed, ,,Lady Alicent.Ser Otto" she said before her eyes went to Alicent's fingers. She could see the small red wounds.
But just as quickly as she had seen them, Alicent had hidden her hands behind her back. ,,Yes, it is again, thank you very much, it helps my island, believe me," she replied and saw the older man nod in delight. His dark eyes lowered for a moment and looked at the small brooch on her clothes. ,,Well, are you staying for a while?" he asked as Alicent excused herself and went to Rhaenyra. ,,I'm afraid I'll have to disappoint you. But no, my stay is already longer than planned. Well, my uncle has been looking after Bear Island during my absence...although too long for my liking," she admitted and Otto nodded, indicating that he had seen through her. ,,Well then, the crown and I wish you a safe journey home" he said before bowing slightly and walking back to the king. Her eyes glanced at Rhaenyra and Alicent but they seemed to be engaged in an intense conversation and therefore did not look at the older one. Instead, the young Mormont decided it was finally time to go.
Her footsteps continued through the corridors before she stepped outside and looked up at the sky. I wonder if Daemon has left yet? she asked herself, looking over the clouds. She knew that the headquarters of the Targaryens was Dragonstone. But whether he would be there she did not know. She only knew that she would probably never see all that she had experienced again. Let alone Rhaenyra or Daemon, she was sure she would never see them again. A heavy sigh crossed her lips as she walked across the square towards the tents. It was much lighter now, most of the lords had left and only a handful remained. Either for political reasons or for other reasons, but she didn't care. When she arrived at her tent she felt her heart tighten painfully for the first time. It was the thought of being abandoned not only by her duties but also by her lies.
She had lied to the king several times now, especially about Daemon, she knew. She had lied for the prince out of feelings for him. She did not know. What was it that she felt, was it simply deep admiration and affection. Or was it something more? Was it the true love she felt for him and his niece? Could she really love the two Targaryens? She shook her head slightly as she walked over to Alyssa and the animal licked her hand. ,,Well, how are you?" she asked her bear, but she only looked back. ,,My Lady, everything is packed. The trader will pick us up at the harbour at the latest animal hour. He's taking us back to the wolf forest, unfortunately it's not our friend," her foster father explained, seeming to resent the thought of being taken back home by a strange trader. It is my duty as head of Bear Island to come back she thought bitterly and although she knew that in her position she was much more powerful than other women of her age, she sometimes wished she had died in the assassination attempt.
She turned to the commander after a moment's hesitation and said, ,,Very well, I expect you all to be ready when we leave. We can't afford any delays," she said sternly before she felt Alyssa's hand on hers again. The bear seemed to sense her rider's grief. ,,I'll ride for a bit, but I'll be back before we leave," she announced before moving on to Alyssa who seemed happy to spend time with her rider. ,,Have fun my lady," her foster father said before stepping aside so the two could pass. Alyssa snorted before she started to run across the relatively empty arena. The wind was pleasant on her skin and she stretched out her arms. It's been too long, she thought as she missed the feeling of that kind of freedom. But as she stroked the dark fur of her bear, she realised something again. It was a bear, not a dragon. Syrax and Caraxes were unusual creatures, she thought.
The golden scales and the green bright eyes. The female dragon of Rhaenyra was not inferior to her rider in terms of grace and beauty. She was graceful and yet strong. She had a bond with Rhaenyra that was incredible. But Caraxes could not have had a better rider either. Daemon Targaryen and Caraxes seemed completely alike. Both mysterious, they were distinguished from the rest by the dark red of his scales, soaked with the blood of Daemon's blade that had pierced his enemies. The serpentine nature of the two was incredible. The flying was unbelievable, she thought. It was like being truly free. She knew that with Alyssa she also had a freedom but she would never get close to the freedom of flying and such violence.
But is it good like that? she dared to ask inwardly and wished for a moment to be a Targaryen too. But that moment disappeared immediately when Alyssa roared and she felt her bear's anger. She seemed to have read the young Mormont's thoughts. ,,Alyssa pardon me, you're even better," she said before her bear sped up even more, almost as if she was trying to show off. The young Mormont decided to ride through the forest which was outside the castle but she needed to get some more exercise. Maybe more movement for something else. She guided Alyssa back to the gate before riding through the town with its inhabitants and through the main gate. Of course she didn't miss the glances and the fussing whispering. But because of the wind and Alyssa's panting she simply ignored them. She really had better things to do.
Along the royal road she could see the large forest area from afar. She thought it wasn't as big as Bear Island but it would do for the moment. She steered Alyssa into the forest and soon she was surrounded by numerous trees. Big small brown ones with and without bark the plants passed her by as Alyssa seemed to be completely absorbed. But even Y/n did not deny that nature evoked something in her. Whether it was the curse, as she called it, or simply her connection to it, she did not know. She suddenly seemed to be overcome by many feelings. The joy and ecstasy of Rhaenyra and Daemon. How her heart beat faster at the two of them. But also the anger at her uncle and her situation. The situation related to her age, her duties, she knew she could not escape them.
But also the sadness that she had to leave Rhaenyra and Daemon just because of her position in this world. With a tug on Alyssa's fur, the bear stopped and growled confusedly at her owner. She knew she hadn't hurt her bear with this, she didn't know why she stopped. ,,Why?" was the only whisper that came from her lips. ,,Why me Alyssa?" she asked her bear. But she only looked sadly at her as if she wanted to tell her that she couldn't answer her question. The moment passed, but as if something had escaped the air, a gust of wind came up. And with a jerk, as if Alyssa had smelled something, she ran. What is it?" she asked the bear, trying to make out something among the trees. But nothing but trees and bushes. They were alone in the forest, so what had Alyssa sensed? She had hardly ever seen her bear run so fast.
It was incredible how fast and precise she ran through the forest. As if she knew the forest and everything else. It was only when she jumped over a bush track and stopped with a jerk in a clearing that Y/n looked around again. It was a large round open space full of meadow and nothing else. Around her was the forest that would separate her from everything. ,,What did you sense?" she ventured aloud and looked around uncertainly. Her hand rested on Longclaw's grip, worried if something or someone would come out from between the trees. Again a gust of wind came up only stronger and Alyssa growled. In one swift move she had Longclaw in her hand and looked around hastily. What's happening? she asked herself tensely, afraid that it might be Lord Glover who wanted to take revenge. He would have noticed once she was dead and could have blamed it on Alyssa. She was about to dismount when a loud screech came from the sky. Her gaze went upwards and her fear turned to surprise and uncertainty as a shadow came from the sky towards her.
The shadow was above the cloud cover before it burst upon her and revealed itself to be Syrax. ,,Rhaenyra" was the princess' name as she watched the dragon land. The wings stirred up the meadow and a few flowers flew around before the dragon landed with a dull sound and shrieked again. Alyssa, on the other hand, roared back and did not seem at all attracted by the other animal. On the contrary, the smaller animal growled and bared its teeth as it roared at the dragoness again. ,,Rhaenyra, don't get off!" she called to the blonde and saw the worry in the princess' eyes. Before she got off Alyssa with a jerk and stood in front of her. She saw the fear in her bear's eyes and knew that Alyssa had never been this close to a dragon before. Or rather, she had never smelled a dragon before.
She was the Lady of Bear Island among the animals. She had never had a rival before. She has the same insight as I do, the young Mormont thought bitterly and looked into Alyssa's eyes again. ,,Calm down, Alyssa...I-I had to learn too, we are inferior to them," she said calmly to the bear. She understood her kindred spirit all too well. They both had to fight for the place they had today. And just because someone had dragons, they were automatically nothing more. She put her sword back into its hilt before holding out a hand to Alyssa. ,,Calm down, she's not going to hurt us," she started, but was shocked when Alyssa snapped at her. Shock and disbelief were in the young Mormont's eyes. ,,Alyssa," she said incredulously from her lips. In all these years, Alyssa had never once snapped at her. Of course, it wouldn't have been enough to rip her arm off, but it would have been painful and it was a matter of respect. They are wild animals, she heard her own words as she saw the ferocity and the animalistic flight and fear instincts in her bear's mismatched eyes. ,,Princess, please fly another round, I have to do something you shouldn't see!" she called over the noise of the two animals before looking over her shoulder. ,,B-But are you sure?" Rhaenyra asked, uncertainty about the situation in her violet eyes.
But Y/n just nodded before the wind picked up and Syrax disappeared above the clouds. But Alyssa still didn't seem to calm down, instead she roared at her rider almost as an accusation. ,,Don't blame me, she only had to open her mouth once and you'd be nothing but ashes!" she shouted back and took some distance. Alyssa snorted and paced back and forth restlessly as if she were judging Y/n. ,,We have to accept it. You're not strong enough against a dragon!" she shouted at her bear, knowing how strange this must seem to any outsider. Alyssa roared again, seeming to sense her rider's turmoil as well, despite everything. She knows of both our fears, she thought as she realised she had underestimated her alliance. ,,We'll go home today, we'll be much more powerful, you know?" she asked, seeing the other's brief hesitation.
Instead, both sides seemed to have had enough of each other. Too many emotions and instincts for them to agree. The young Mormont drew her sword and threw it aside. ,,Come on then, let me feel it," she urged Alyssa before she felt the first crack and the first pain inside her. Her whimpering soon turned to screaming before it became an animalistic roar and she stood before Alyssa in her curse form. The young Mormont didn't even wait before she leapt towards Alyssa with her mouth agape, trying to catch her. Alyssa jumped aside and snapped at her rider. Y/n dodged and tried to reach the other with her paw instead Alyssa bit into it and the young Mormont roared in her form. That's it, show me what you feel she thought as she snapped at Alyssa again and caught her on the leg. She knew it was an unusual way to deal with her animal companion and yet. Alyssa remained a wild animal with animal instincts.
She could not force will and acceptance on her towards dragons. The pride seemed strong in both females. But Y/n had learned to accept the dragons, only Alyssa seemed to have to recognise it. With a roar, Alyssa yanked her leg out of the mouth of the female of the same age before she brought Y/n down with a leap. Y/n felt the bear's sharp fangs perched dangerously on her neck and could have killed her in a second. But when their eyes met and Alyssa let go of her with a loud roar, Y/n knew that her companion had at least made her point. Your pride is unmatched, she thought before watching Alyssa retreat into the forest, seemingly alone to deal with it all. The bear slowly stood up again before looking and snorting at Alyssa. She knew that Alyssa was little different from dragons, at least in instincts and relationship. They both had pride in what they were and yet they respected their riders. They had a bond that they would only make once in their lives unless they wanted to accept a new rider of their own accord. But in all that time, neither the Mormonts nor the Targaryens could forget they were and would always be animals. Animals with wild instincts that would never listen to their riders once they had acted on them.
The bear looked up at the sky with fear as Syrax came through the clouds again with Rhaenyra on her back. Y/n backed away a little before the ground vibrated again as Syrax landed. She saw the fear in Rhaenyra's eyes as the princess apparently mistook her for Alyssa. ,, Y/n !" she called out, looking around anxiously. Suddenly Syrax snorted and came a little closer to her with his head. But Rhaenyra pulled her back again. Fear was in the violet eyes as Rhaenyra called out to her, afraid that Alyssa had killed her. The young Mormont roared as she realised that this time she had no choice. The secret she had tried to hide would come out sooner or later. But it was the fear that Rhaenyra would see her as a monster and disgust her that plagued her. She was afraid that Rhaenyra would only see the curse and find her repulsive. Y/n was afraid of losing Rhaenyra and the last bit of hope for love. The bear backed away slightly as her bones positioned themselves back. The roar of the beast became more human before the screams and painful whimpers were heard.
The fur receded to reveal an exhausted Y/n Mormont looking up into the violet of Rhaenyra with frightened eyes. Syrax even took a step back and the silence between them was tearing. ,,Please say something princess?" she asked Rhaenyra and looked into the violet eyes. ,,I am a mons-". ,,You are a goddess," Rhaenyra interrupted her and dismounted Syrax. Y/n look went from the ground to Rhaenyra and it contained incredulity. Is she making fun of me? she asked herself and couldn't help thinking of Daemon when he had chosen her. ,,Please don't play with me" she said and turned away from Rhaenyra hurt as she became more and more frightened. ,,Please not you," Y/n whispered and looked down. It hurt her to curse physically as well as mentally. She flinched as she felt Rhaenyra's hand on hers. Carefully, yet lovingly, Rhaenyra clasped the young Mormont's hand. Rhaenyra stroked Y/n's hand as if trying to calm the older girl. ,,I would never play with you Y/n not over something like this...my heart" she said and at the last word Y/n finally looked up from the floor to Rhaenyra in the eyes she had fallen in love with. ,,You heard?" Y/n dared to ask as she remembered the flight on Syrax and her own words to Rhaenyra. ,,Every single word Y/n. You said you were here for me and now I am only here for you," the princess said as quietly as if she were being overheard. ,,I am only here for you as your princess and friend...but also more," the Targaryen ventured and a slight blush appeared on her otherwise pale cheeks. Y/n felt Rhaenyra's grip on her hand tighten slightly as if she was afraid of losing her grip. ,,Rhaenyra" came uncertainly and yet with curiosity from the Mormont's lips.
But she received no answer, instead she suddenly felt the soft, gentle lips of Rhaenyra on hers. She automatically clasped Rhaenyra's hand and the blonde seemed to want to cling to her. As if they were both afraid of missing the moment. It was Y/n, however, who deepened the kiss. Their kiss was gentle and inexperienced, but it was full of love. Her heart beat fast and wild and she felt joy and happiness go through her. The two seemed to exist for the moment, they had what they seemed to be looking for. Freedom. Only when they broke away and their eyes met again did they both seem to realise what had happened. ,, I' m sorry I-" Rhaenyra began as she realised what she had done. ,,I love you," Y/n interrupted the princess with these words and clasped Rhaenyra's hands this time as she tried to break away. The young Mormont's heart seemed to have never beaten so fast. She had finally admitted it and it felt like a weight was falling off her. The violet eyes of Rhaenyra showed uncertainty as if she was trying to speak against her heart. But when the blonde gave a soft smile and pulled her delicate hand closer to Y/n and into another kiss, the older seemed to have her answer. ,,I love you too my heart" Rhaenyra whispered and the older one had to smile because of the nickname.
Rhaenyra pulled the older one down in anticipation of her condition before they lay side by side on the grass with their hands intertwined. ,,Since when do you have feelings for me?" the blonde asked as they looked up at the sky. It all seemed easier at once, as if her feelings had blown the wall that had made everything bad. Now that it was broken through, everything suddenly seemed better. Shame spread through Y/n and redness crept into her cheeks. ,,Ever since I saw you for the first time. When I gave you Visenya. You were wonderful you were not spoilt or vain nor too formal. You were you you were and until perfectly Rhaenyra my heart beat for you every moment I saw you and thought of you" she admitted and felt Rhaenyra squeeze her hand. ,,And you?" Y/n asked the same question and looked at Rhaenyra. The princess also looked beside her before she said, ,,The tournament...when I was watching you fight, my heart was beating so wildly I was afraid you would die.
But when I came into your tent with Alicent, it was still beating so fast. I was afraid of losing you. You were and are so beautiful in battle it was unbelievable. You were something I had never seen before. And yet you weren't sulky or quiet. You were perfect as if from the gods," Rhaenyra told me and she moved closer to her heart. Y/n smiled when she heard Rhaenyra's words. ,,I was afraid you would see me as a monster...everything that kept you in my heart could have passed so quickly" Y/n admitted after silence. She saw Rhaenyra looking at her and saw the interest in the violet eyes. ,,Your ability is incredible Nuhi Jorraelzi. You are more like a dragon than I could probably ever be. You have this gift almost from another time, it's beautiful," Rhaenyra said and stroked Y/n's hand.
For the first time she saw her curse as something special, even beautiful. ,,Thank you," she said softly and gave the younger girl a smile. ,,What does Nui Joraeli mean?" she asked, looking slightly confused as Rhaenyra giggled at her High Valyrian pronunciation. ,,You are a natural in High Valyrian," she said and got a miffed look from the Mormont. ,,It means my love in High Valyrian," Rhaenyra explained before turning around and leering over Y/n and giving her a kiss. ,,A dragon and a bear is an unusual couple, isn't it?" the blonde asked the older one, playing with the Mormont's hair. ,,A forbidden pair, my beautiful flame," the Mormont said truthfully, hating herself for the way she saw things. Rhaenyra sat up before Y/n did the same and looked at her with seriousness in her eyes. ,,Rhaenyra, it is clear to you, isn't it? "Y/n now asked, slightly uncertainly, as if the younger girl did not quite understand the seriousness. ,,Rhaenyra, you are the princess. I am just a lady of a small insignificant house. Above all, we are women, there is no such thing as what we have, if you know what I mean. It would only bring shame on you if it came out on your own that we were-" she left the kiss in silence, knowing that Rhaenyra knew what she was getting at. ,,Whatever, I am the heiress to the throne, I am and will be the queen of the kingdoms. And well a queen needs a hand or maybe a mistress or even a wife," she said wittily and seductively and her fingers ran up the older woman's arm. ,,Then I hope, my queen, that the fire in you is stronger than anything else that may come," Y/n said, but was soon pulled into another kiss by the younger one. Only when the two heard a rustling in the bushes did they break away out of fear. Y/n grabbed her sword and protected Rhaenyra with her body as she put the blonde behind her.
Only when Syrax roared did Alyssa come jumping out of the bushes. ,,Alyssa" said Y/n and put her sword away, but kept Rhaenyra behind her. The bear looked at them both with interest before snorting and walking towards them. ,,Don't," the younger one said and tried to stop the older one from going to the bear. ,,It's alright, she won't hurt me," Y/n reassured the princess and continued to walk towards her bear. Alyssa looked up at the young Mormont before almost apologetically holding her aching hand and licking it. ,,It's all right, Alyssa," she said reassuringly and knelt down in front of the bear before wrapping her in a hug. Only when she broke away and went back to Rhaenyra did the two of them watch as the bear went to Syrax. The dragon eyed the little one carefully. Only when Syrax yelled at Alyssa and she did the same, did the two girls fear for the two of them.
But to their surprise Alyssa came closer and sniffed Syrax before she held her muzzle to the dragon's and Syrax did the same after a moment's thought. ,,If that isn't a divine sign," Y/n said and heard Rhaenyra's relieved laughter. She flinched as Rhaenyra hugged her from behind and put her head on the older one's shoulder. ,,I love you my bear" she whispered and gave Y/n a soft kiss on the cheek. ,,I love you too my flame" Y/n replied and gave her a kiss on her blonde hair. They broke away from each other and when their eyes met, the two girls knew that their time would come to an end once more. And at this point it seemed forever. ,,You're really leaving?" Rhaenyra asked and Y/n heard the sadness in her voice. ,,I don't want to leave you, not at such a time of grief...but I have to guide my house. My uncle he is a complicated power hungry man he must not take it over. Even if soon I am a woman grown up Rhaenyra I am afraid of what is coming. I don't want all this," she admitted and felt her fingers begin to tremble. ,,These duties, they are terrible and cruel. These duties killed my mother... Y/n. It is your duty to lead your house and yet when you grow up you would ask me to marry you and I am the queen everything would be different. But time all that is around us it will never happen I'm sorry I can only be there for you" Rhaenyra said and for the first time she truly sounded like a queen. They both knew exactly how it felt to want to escape from his life. ,,We could just fly away on Syrax," Y/n murmured and looked at the dragoness. ,,Yes, that would be nice," Rhaenyra finished thinking before sighing. ,,When will you be gone?" Rhaenyra asked as she walked to Syrax and Y/n followed her. ,,At the latest hour so I can be back on Bear Island in about two days " Y/n explained and Rhaenyra nodded even though she saw the sadness in the violet eyes. ,,I will write them every day. My letters are to be my voice in the time we are apart that is all I can offer you for now...I am sorry" Y/n said and looked down in shame at this realisation. ,,I'll just write twice as many back and give you a goodbye sign," Rhaenyra said and gave the older one a slight smile under her watery violten eyes. ,,Oh, Rhaenyra," came a quiet and saddened voice from Y/n when she saw how exhausted the younger one seemed. She pulled Rhaenyra into a last tight hug, stroked her back soothingly and listened to the soft snapping and crying.
Before their lips found each other for the last time and a heartfelt kiss was to be their testimony of love. ,,Farewell my goddess". ,,Farewell my dragon" Y/n replied before they broke away from each other and both climbed onto their animals. The different colours of their eyes met one last time before Alyssa disappeared into the forest and Syrax had already disappeared into the clouds. But as soon as she disappeared into the forest, silent tears ran down her cheeks. But a slight smile was on her lips. She had finally found what she thought would never happen. She had found love and yet she had indirectly lost it. They would stay apart for a long time, they both knew that. But what they had left was hope. Alyssa growled and seemed to want to comfort her rider. But instead, more tears ran down her cheeks and Alyssa stayed in the forest with her rider until she had cried out her pain. A ruler of a house should not be seen like this. Showing weakness was something she could not do. Despite her reddened eyes, she wiped away her tears before riding towards the castle with hope burning in her heart.
The sun had already set as she walked through the town with Alyssa and arrived at the tournament site. There were fewer tents again and hers was one of the last ones left. My lady, what happened?" her commanding officer asked worriedly when he saw the slightly broken clothes and the disintegrated state. ,,It's all right, Alyssa," she said reassuringly and knelt down in front of the bear before wrapping her in a hug. Only when she broke away and went back to Rhaenyra did the two of them watch as the bear went to Syrax. The dragon eyed the little one carefully. There were fewer tents again and hers was one of the last ones left. ,,My lady, what happened?" her commanding officer asked worriedly when he saw the slightly broken clothes and the disintegrated state. ,,A disagreement with Alyssa, it was a difference of opinion, Meta will be able to fix it," she said before getting off her bear and walking over to Meta who had an equally worried expression on her face. ,,Will you be able to fix it?" asked Y/n, looking down at herself. Meta sighed slightly, ,,Yes I can but it will take some time. It should be ready before we break out," she said and disappeared into the tent with her mistress. Her maid was right and shortly before they were to leave, her clothes were repaired and her broken fingers stabilised.
They would be able to make it to Bear Island. ,,My lady, are you ready?" their commander asked after they had also stowed the tent. ,,Yes, let's go," she said before they all got on their mounts and walked away from the tournament site. But since she looked at Alyssa she felt the pain in her heart. She was afraid of what was to come and the fear of never seeing Rhaenyra again. Can love exist through letters? she asked herself, thinking of the sad look on Rhaenyra's face when they parted. They were out of the castle sooner than they thought and at the docks where an unfriendly greedy merchant was waiting for them. Reluctantly she paid him, but did not leave the side of her subordinates. She did not like him and he did not like her, something they had in common. But she trusted him enough not to let him drown her. They pushed off from the jetty before the oars were lowered into the dark water and they sailed towards the wolf forest. Her eyes wandered over the dark endless sea around her.
For a moment it seemed so inviting to jump in and just swim back to Rhaenyra. But she knew that those kisses, the words and their touches were the only thing they might ever feel from each other. She had seen in books from Dorne, given to her by her merchant friend, that it was possible for two women to have intercourse. But it seemed that the gods were very much against this. So it seemed that even the old gods could not support her. Grief pierced her like no sword ever had before. Her hand clenched into a fist, but she let it go as her broken fingers ached. Will we ever see each other again? she thought, stroking Alyssa's head as she stood beside her, looking at her sadly. They were a good distance from King's Landing now and yet the capital loomed over them like an even bigger dark shadow. It was eerie and handsome at the same time. Suddenly she felt a sharp draft and Alyssa almost hummed happily. This time her gaze went to the sky and her heart beat faster with joy and love as the outline of Syrax and a person could be seen above them through dragon fire. The sign she wanted to give me Y/n thought and smiled happily. ,,Goodbye my dragon!" she called to the sky and again fire and the silhouette came before Syrax cried out and disappeared into the darkness. ,,Who was that, my lady?" she heard her foster father ask, who was obviously surprised about what had happened. ,,A...friend," she said before disappearing into the ship with her secret.
