AMC Picks Up Captain Nemo Origin Series ‘Nautilus’ From Disney, Plans to Air Show in 2024
The Captain Nemo origin story series “Nautilus” lives on, with AMC Networks licensing the U.S. and Canadian linear and streaming rights to the live-action series from Disney Entertainment.
The 10-episode show was originally slated to air on Disney+, but it was announced back in August that the show was not going forward at the streamer as part of a wide-ranging cost cutting initiative at the Mouse House.
AMC and AMC+ will now air the show as a special television event in 2024, with an exact premiere date to be announced later. Inspired by Jules Vernes’ “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea,” the show will explore the early life of Captain Nemo, who is played by Shazad Latif. The character is described as “an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him.”
“’Nautilus’ is a big, sweeping drama that is sure to appeal to fans of our Anne Rice Immortal Universe and other buzzy and fan-forward series like ‘Orphan Black: Echoes,’” said Ben Davis, executive vice president of original programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios. “We are looking forward to bringing it to AMC+ and AMC as a special television event next year.”
Along with Latif, the cast of the show includes Georgia Flood, Thierry Fremont and Céline Menville, with guest appearances from Richard E. Grant, Anna Torv and Noah Taylor.
The series was developed and produced by Moonriver TV’s Xavier Marchand and Seven Stories’ Anand Tucker. James Dormer serves as writer and executive producer. Johanna Devereaux, Chris Loveall, Colleen Woodcock, and Daisy Gilbert also executive produce. Cameron Welsh serves as producer. Michael Matthews was the lead director.
“I am hugely excited that the efforts of everyone involved in the making of the show will be seen on such a prestigious network,” said Dormer.
“We are so thrilled to present the epic adventures of Captain Nemo and his legendary submarine The Nautilus alongside the other incredible AMC universes,” said Marchand and Tucker. “The series will take viewers on a breathtaking journey with Nemo and his crew, battling terrifying creatures and the dark forces of the British Empire.”
“Nautilus” is distributed by Disney Entertainment and acknowledges the support from the Australian Government’s Location Incentive and from the Queensland Government via Screen Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy.
What do u think is being said about food and eating in phantom thread (2017)?
eating is presented as a quintessentially physical function, which therefore makes it bothersome to reynolds: he doesn't like hearing people eat, he perceives alma's romantic dinner as an interruption of his cerebral work, his meal at the beginning of the film is specifically something he enjoys in between projects. reynolds arranges his life to serve his work, which, although revolving around other people's bodies and the fashionable presentation of them, is detached and disconnected from reynolds's own physicality. alma, on the other hand, enjoys eating, which reynolds finds crass (the noise) and she also views food as a means of connecting with other people: again, food signalling a break from the heady and contemplative world reynolds occupies when he's designing.
the first time alma poisons reynolds is a critical experience for him because the illness is a heightened version of this function of food, forcing him to experience his bodily existence in an unpleasant and uncontrollable way. sickness is both humiliating and slightly thrilling for him because of the importance he ascribes to his ordered, tidy, suppressed physical environment and existence. food introduces an element of chaos that reynolds isn't used to grappling with; the poisoning is not just an internal experience but also forces reynolds to connect with alma and his memories of his mother. this is also why it matters for the film's character study that reynolds takes the poison voluntarily in the end: although he is probably going to continue to be finicky, domineering, and single-mindedly focussed on his work, he also embraces at least momentarily the vulnerability and physical presence in the world that alma brings him, using food as a vehicle.
the use of food and eating in this way is more than incidentally reactionary; you can see this most clearly in the sequence with reynolds's hollywood-fat client (barbara rose? i forgor) who commits the mortal sin of existing in her body and then drinking at her own wedding---both, in reynolds's mind, examples of overconsumption. this sequence is annoying because it's resolved by alma parroting reynolds's position in her (literal and verbal) dressing-down of this woman. the house of woodcock cannot stand for bodily excess and pleasure (cf. alma's miserable nye party) because to reynolds, haute couture is a gruelling mental exercise existing on a cerebral plane elevated above the petty material concerns of the rest of the physical world. he is, after all, a designer and not actually a dressmaker in a labour-process sense.
DISCLAIMER - I wrote the round one blurbs when I was very sick and half awake, so if you see any mistakes PLEASE TELL ME! Nicely, obviously, but I want to make sure they sound good for round 2. Thank you!
I know there’s a lot of them, but man there’s SO MANY GOOD BIRDS! There were a few times where people didn’t put what specific subspecies for some birds, so sometimes I’d have to choose one. I tried to choose one that represents that bird the best!
I don’t know when the polls will begin, I’m doing some research on the birds so that people can read about them before they vote.
If one of your favs didn’t make it in, don’t worry they’re a winner in my and your heart.
If you are wondering where the Pigeon (Rock Dove) is, THEY ARE THE FINAL CHAMPION! At the end of this bracket, the winner will face off against the mightily popular Rock Dove! Will they be able to beat such a tough challenger? We will see…
Also, a note on how I set this bracket up: I put all the birds in a numbered list and then used a number generator. I think the matchups we got were really interesting.
she’s also conservative. like, incredibly conservative. like “no saying damn in my christian household” level of conservative. love laugh love, doesn’t wear a mask because it’s against god’s will type of woman.
she likes collecting mugs. being blind, what they look like doesn’t really matter to her. maybe she’ll ask someone near her to describe its appearance to her. she also likes animals, so if she knows a mug has animal images on it, she buys it.
so i didn’t think much of it when i found myself drinking out of a bird mug last time i was at her house. the birds had their names underneath them, but i didn’t really look all that close at them. until i finished my drink and found the phrase “fowl language” at the bottom. thought hm. took a closer look at the birds and their names.
they were all sexual. titmouse. woodcock. booby. all of them like that. i didn’t say anything. she doesn’t know. she’d flip her lid. to her it’s just a bird mug. and that’s how it’ll stay.
Being at my parents house is turning me into a bit of a bird watcher... there's a lovely male cardinal that I see almost every day. At least two northern flickers too. Hummingbirds. Mourning doves. Bluejays. This evening I was sitting outside and heard the little peent of a woodcock.
Currently thinking about how perfect a Bagginshield Phantom Thread au would be, actually
- Obviously Thorin is Reynolds, and instead of the House of Woodcock, it’s the House of Durin.
- Dís is Cyril, handling administration and networking (which Thorin refuses do because he’s incapable of being civil with annoying rich people).
- The rest of the Company work as seamsters/tailors.
- Thorin is haunted by the death of his father and frequently sews his name into the lining of the clothes he makes. Of course.
- While on retreat at his country estate, he visits a nearby restaurant and meets Bilbo, a waiter. Thorin orders an exorbitantly large breakfast and is impressed when Bilbo manages to remember it all. (Which he canonically fucking does in the book, like??)
- Cue whirlwind romance + Bilbo habitually poisoning Thorin with mushrooms whenever he starts to get uppity with him.
- Oh and Thranduil is the drunk client they steal the clothes back from.
