yknow, there's something fun to me about the way reid is tortured with russian roulette in season two, and then a million years later in season eleven, morgan gets tortured the same way. there's some fun and funky symmetry there. they could start a support group.
also, guess who directed that episode of season eleven lmao

AO3 Link \ Part Two [soon]
Short vignettes from each of the crew and their relationship with Jonny's heart.
(Is it out of character? Yeah probably but I like the sibling-esque dynamic of ‘I killed them 83 times this month but if you even touch them I will salt the earth with your desiccated remains’.)
---
Part One: Dr. Carmilla (morally grey), Jonny, The Aurora, Nastya, Ashes, and Ivy TW// mention of medical abuse | canon-typical violence | sensory overload
Doctor Carmilla, Lonely Vampire
She was proud looking down at the freshly cleaned and repaired body on her table. His chest rose and fell after a week of stillness. Carmilla almost couldn't believe that she’d finally done it. Finally restored a body to life permanently.
Her cowboy groaned as he came closer to consciousness. She placed a hand on his chest, feeling the tick and flow of his new heart. It was a good heart. He was a good kid.
She wasn’t alone anymore.
Everything could be good now.
Jonny Vangelis, Dead Cowboy
Jonny woke up. He shouldn't- How was he-
Something was ticking. Where?
His chest felt heavy and his breast bone burned.
Something cold was in his hand- no, something cold was holding his hand.
His eyes shot open and he scrambled away from the cold thing only to find himself falling to the floor. He screamed when the impact lit a blazing fire of pain in his ribs.
The cold (hands?) things were back holding his face and shushing him but the pain began to pulse.
Tic. Burn. Tic. Burn.
Jonny pulled down the collar of his shirt to see a mess of thick scars and metal seams to the left of his sternum. His breathing quickened but the ticking held it’s tempo.
“What did you do?” he screamed. Carmilla’s face was inches from his as she tried to pull him closer.
“WHAT DID YOU DO, CARMA?”
The doctor’s face broke, as if she was only now realizing what was happening; what she’d done, “I-I couldn’t lose you… not like that. Not when you were still so you-”
“You promised! You promised you’d let me go!” Jonny cried.
“I’m sorry,”
Tears were falling now as Carmilla pulled him against her. Jonny tried to push her off but the pain was too much and the coolness of her cheek against his was soothing.
“It hurts,” he sobbed, “It hurts so much. Why?”
I’m sorry.
The Aurora, Cyberian Battle-cruiser
The winner of the roulette game and her new 'owner' sauntered onto the bridge and looked around. She contemplated just electrocuting him to death once he touched anything.
"I must say you are a simply gorgeous craft," he said, running a hand over the embossed leather of the captain’s seat, "Somebody put a lot of love into your creation."
The Aurora preened a bit despite herself. At least he had good taste.
“I’m gonna have to go by some polish tho, love. You are absolutely filthy! Where they finger painting with space cheetos on the flight screen,” he looked disgusted at the greasy smears decorating the console, “Maybe a steamer? Some of this shit is worked in, darling.”
>> Thank you. I would appreciate that greatly.
The intruder looked bewildered at the flight screen and fell back into the captain's seat when she rumbled in amusement. He whipped his head around as if to find a source or rogue crewman.
>> Did you really just win a ship without knowing what it was?
>> Poor planning on your part.
The intruder took a moment to process what was happening before he crossed his arms and huffed, "I just do what the Doc tells me so she doesn't decide that I'm in need of having my chest ripped open again."
>> Judging by the way you won me: I would say that isn't detrimental to your life.
"It still fucking hurts!"
The Aurora rumbled again, finding that she quite enjoyed her guest. He may be fussing in the captain's seat, pretending to be offended, but he was still watching the screen for anything else she had to say.
It had been years since anyone had treated her as anything other than just a means of transportation with the downside of sentience. She found herself analysing him closer and realized there was a mechanically ticking coming from him.
Was he also…?
>> Well, I suppose I must register you as Captain so we may take off. I am unable to lift off without any registered crew.
Her guest shifted uncomfortably in his seat, "Not that I don't appreciate that but, uh, I think that's more her place."
The Aurora was starting to get the idea that whoever his travel companion was, they would not be getting along.
>> No
He startled and Aurora realized just how young he looked. Her previous crews were all older Cyberians weathered and jaded by constant battle. This new…. boy, looked more like the young men barely old enough to grow beards that manned her mess hall during the war.
She still remembered the sad stories they told of home.
>> No. You earned me. I am choosing you as the Captain.
"But-"
She buzzed at him before pulling up a login screen.
>> Primary Captain : Please Enter Your Information As Prompted_
Her guest hesitated before beginning to type. It was endearing how gently he placed his hand over the print reader and she could feel the strange rhythm of his heartbeat flitting across his palm.
>> Welcome Captain Jonathon E. Vangelis .
Jonathon beamed at the Aurora's screen before a look of horror dawned on him, "She's going to skin me alive," he whispered.
The Aurora hummed as anger charged her systems and pulled up another screen.
>> I have an idea
>> Loading…
>> Primary Captain profile locked and hidden.
>> Passcode Set to: Handprint and Vocal Verification
>> Loading...
>> First Mate : Please Enter Your Information As Prompted_
“But she’ll know if the Captain’s position is filled” Jonathan protested.
>> I was built to house up to three captains. Your doctor doesn’t have to know that one of the positions has been filled.
Jonathon stared at the screen with a small smile and sniffled before typing again. His accent that had rounded and drawn his words was muted under an average Basic dialect as he spoke now.
>> Welcome, First Mate Jonny d'Ville .
>> Now about those cleaning supplies...
Nastya Rasputina, Former Princess
She ran, following the instructions the Aurora had given her deeper into the ship. She turned to make sure the doctor wasn't following her and ran directly into something warm and squishy. They landed with a grunt.
Nastya scrambled up to look at the… kid? He looked at her in surprise before turning to anger and suspicion..
"How the fuck did you get down here?"
Nastya opened her mouth and realized she didn’t have a response to that. Her eyes began to burn.
“Oh shit. Fuck. I’m sorry I didn’t- Shit shit shit.”
None of this registered as Nastya began to sob. A hand brushed her arm and she threw herself into the boy’s lap. It was undignified but it felt good to be touched by a warm body instead of the doctor’s cold hands.
“Okay, shit,” he shifted her around so her face was buried in his chest.
“I-I’m sorry-, Nastya choked out, “she-she just kept poking and I couldn’t- it hurt so much.”
The arms around her shoulders tightened, causing her to turn her head and look up at him. He looked sad, not in a pitying way but a guilty way.
“I’ll talk to her okay? Sometimes… sometimes she forgets we can feel like that,” he sighed, “I’m Jonny by the way.”
Nastya vaguely remembered the Doctor mentioning there was another like her on board.
“Nastya.”
Jonny gave her a smile and leaned back against the wall with her still pressed against his chest. Nastya rested her head on his sternum and heard an odd ticking sound.
Huh , she thought distantly, that’s why he’s like me. The ticking heart to my metal blood.
Nastya fell asleep safe.
Ashes O’Reilly, Pyromaniac Gangster
Ashes took another shakey drag of their cigarette as the adrenaline from burning Malone faded. They were tired and a rotting sense of uneasy was beginning to fester in their chest.
Of course now was the time Camilla's wannabe cowboy decided to make an appearance for only the second time since Ashes had been taken in. He gave them a strange look before Ashes blew a hole in his gut.
He hit the floor with a dull thud, “Fucking rude.”
“I’m not the one who can’t knock. Were you born in a fucking barn?”
Jonny gave a sputtering laugh as he scooped a handful of intestines back into his abdomen, “Probably, either that or the chicken coop.”
Ashes snorted, the sound surprised them and Jonny grinned.
"Probably made in there too," Jonny continued, not bothering to get up when his stomach healed.
Ashes let out a full body laugh that edged into hysterical. The image of a guy in cowboy boots pushing intestines back into their gut and cracking jokes was unreal. Even after managing to burn down an entire planet.
“Uh, you okay?”
Jonny was standing in front of them now. A look of concern on his face.
Ashes rubbed a hand across their face and realized hot tears were beginning to streak down their cheeks.
They were so tired.
“I’m just-” their breathing hitched but they refused to cry, “I’m just tired. Arson really takes it out of you, ya’ know?”
Jonny’s mouth twisted into a forced smile before he sat down on the bed with them, “This may be over stepping, so go ahead and throw me out if you want but, uh, if you need to sleep, without the nightmares, I might be able to help.”
“Who said anything about nightmares?” Ashes shifted away from him.
Jonny rolled his eyes, “Do you want help or not?”
“What are you gonna do? Shoot me to sleep?”
“No, but Nastya-” Jonny’s ears turned red, “Nastya says that my ‘heartbeat’ always knocks her out. Something about the rhythm being perfectly consistent? It’s just an offer, if you’re not comf-”
“I’d like that,” Ashes said, looking away, “I’m actually not all that used to having my own room and sleeping alone yet. Never had the opportunity even in the Sevens.”
Jonny gave them a small smile before being manhandled into a pile of carefully arranged pillows. His shirt was unceremoniously ripped off in exchange for one of Ashes’ cleaner shirts. (They would not be getting that shirt back)
Ashes gave their set up a hard once over now that there was a cowboy shoved in with their stuffed Charizard before climbing in and resting their body over his.
He wiggled to get an arm free and began to run it carefully through their hair. It didn’t take long before the both of them were asleep.
Ivy Alexandria, Amnesiac Librarian
Everything was too loud and bad . Ivy stumbled through the halls with her hands over her ears in a futile attempt to block it out when the 'it' is her own brain.
She opens her eyes for a moment and instantly regrets it as everything around her seems to shout directly into her mind.
It hurt. Why did it have to hurt?
At some point she managed to find a dark place to wedge herself into and tears are soaking her collar by the time somebody finds her. She can't focus on anything but the metallic whine of her brain and the presence of something loud that she must get away from when a callused hand is suddenly holding her arm and stops the bad feeling there.
She gasps and grabs for the thing (person?) that makes the bad go away, landing in it’s lap. It rumbles something and positions her so her ear is pressed against it.
Ivy wants to fight it and sit up but then she hears something through the whining in her head.
shht tic shht tic shht tic
Hands wind around her shoulders and tangle in the hair at the base of her neck as she begins to relax and start counting the ticks.

why it would make sense for qtaro to (but why he probably won’t) be ch 3-1b’s big death
Hey!! So, this is something I’ve been thinking about for awhile, honestly: who’s gonna be the mid-chapter death of 3-1b (if there is one)? For awhile, I was pretty convinced that it should be Q-taro due to reasons regarding his character, but now that I’ve looked back on everything, I doubt he’ll be the one to die. This is just a ramble outlining my thought process, because I’ve mentioned it here before but I wanted to get everything out :)
So, let’s start with talking about Q-taro’s character and how he’s developed since chapter 1. Though it tends to go overlooked because the dynamic between our foil characters (Sara and Shin) is a much better embodiment of this, Q-taro’s character and how it develops are centric around trust and independence.
Russian Roulette is the first notable insight we get into Q-taro’s character, and it’s not a favorable one: he makes it very clear that above all else, he values his own life and survival. He’s the first to suggest himself as the one who should be safe from harm, and when it’s established that he isn’t trustworthy enough he immediately suggests the people he thinks would be most likely to get him out alive. His value of survival is amplified in the first main game, when he forsakes common compassion and immediately suggests that the children (the least useful participants, in his eyes) be killed. This is the main reason why Q-taro is the least liked out of the main cast (at least in the fandom’s eyes), because he’s willing to sacrifice others. And unlike Shin, whose morals regarding the death game align with him most, from what we know thus far there’s no traumatic events forcing him to act this way, just his inherent desire to survive by the rules.
Q-taro’s selfishness, as we all know, culminates with Chapter 2′s bad end, where he gets 200 tokens and escapes. His selfish character has been building up to this point, and this ending is his survival instincts at their worst. However, this is the point where his character begins to change- or, rather, the ending of 2-1 is. The ending in which Q-taro pushes the button to swap himself out with Gin is the most distinct turning point; despite having openly advocated for Gin’s death in the first main game, he’s now gained the empathy and compassion to risk his own life for the child’s sake. Even if you get the ending in which you push the Reko doll, Q-taro is clearly shaken by how close Gin came to death, and expresses very clear remorse over it. Though he initially prioritized his own life, and him pushing the button comes at the very last minute, this is the point where he becomes more of a sympathetic character.
This continues into 2′s main game, where he’s more willing to let the children survive, and finally, his character arc comes to an end in 3-1a. Mai stabs him, the dolls reveal that they’re tasked to kill the humans, and Q-taro... implores that everyone trust each other. For the Q-taro we’ve known throughout the game, this comes as a shock: he lacked trust in everyone from the beginning and was constantly prioritizing himself, yet now he’s expressed the desire to become strong allies despite the dolls being a known threat. He’s changed, his character arc is over, and he is now fully a member of the group. And for awhile, I believed that this conclusion of his character arc was a surefire indicator that he would die in 3-1b. He’s finished, he’s complete, he can’t go anywhere else, so surely there’s nothing left to do but kill him off...right?
Then, however, I began to think back on how Nankidai has handled the characters’ deaths in the past. The one commonality that I could find between each pivotal point where at least one person dies is that they all have an impact on one specific character’s development. Mishima was the first to die, and this jumpstarted Nao’s character arc, where she was reduced to a grieving mess but slowly learned to be strong and recover from her grief. In the first main game, then, there was Joe, whose death destroyed Sara but forced her to become a stronger and more mature leader. Then one of the Yabusames dies, and the remaining one is forced to develop as a result of their sibling’s death. And then, of course, is 2-2, where either Kanna or Shin dies, either assuring Kanna that she is worthy and more than just a sacrifice or destroying the only thing Shin had left that was worth living for. There are deaths like Kai’s, which set up plot-related mysteries, or Nao’s, which was a dreadful event (and aids Reko’s development if she’s still alive), but both of those were paired with another death which definitively contributed to someone’s character arc.
So... who is Q-taro close to? Who’s the person whose connection with Q-taro is sufficiently strong that his death would be a necessary point in their development?
There isn’t one. Q-taro has some connections with the rest of the cast, yes, and they all care for him to some extent, but there isn’t any one person intertwined with Q-taro’s character.
Now, let’s think about some other strong connections currently existing in the cast: the first one my mind jumped to was Keiji and Sara, the detective allies father-daughter duo. For awhile, I was quite sure that Keiji wouldn’t die in 3-1b, my logic being that Sara had just gotten over Joe’s death in some way. The death of another ally of hers would be counterproductive, I thought, and this would just put her back to square one. Now, however, considering where the story is going, my opinion has changed.
The state of Sara’s mental health is heavily dependent on who you vote for in 2-2′s main game, as is the state of her leadership. If you kill Shin, Sara is able to reunite with her best friend, be reassured that she is a trustworthy and reliable person, and goes into chapter 3 with the mindset that she will stop the kidnappers and do whatever it takes to get as many people as possible out alive. If you kill Kanna, however, her mental health is demolished. The force of pure trauma forces her to forget her best friend, Shin is out to kill her, and she is just barely holding herself together, much less strong enough to be a leader. She, too, is having doubts in herself; in the Discussion Room, you can’t even choose the option that you want to escape with everyone else, because her mental state is at such a fragile point that she’s only fixated on her own survival.
Think, then, of where character development could best be taken from here: so much of where the story is going to progress and how Sara’s role will develop is dependent on how Sara manages her mental state. And if Keiji, the character who until now has been the most steadfast and reliable member of the group, was to die, everything Sara has known would be put to the test. I believe that Keiji is going to die, and that his death will be the point that tests Sara’s sanity and her resulting capability to be a leader. If Kanna is alive, Sara will be healthy enough to recover from this blow, stand tall, and unite the group under this hardship. If, however, Shin is alive, this will be the point at which she loses all trust in herself and snaps. It would be fitting, in a way, if Sara’s desperation sent her into the mindset that originally drove Shin to be so hell-bent on survival: then we’d see two broken, desperate people who have lost everything they once had to live for facing off against one another.
I got a little side tracked away from Q-taro, so in essence: I think that Q-taro’s character is much better developed than much of the fandom gives him credit for. In fact, his development seems to be one of the most identifiably linear out of all of the cast. He’s a complete character, and he has nowhere else to go from here, but in terms of impact his death would not feel narratively fitting. It’s possible that there might be 2 deaths in 3-1b, and that Q-taro dies alongside a more development-focused death like that of Keiji, but I can’t see Q-taro dying alone in 3-1b.

These haven’t any concept what they are approximately to walk into. down here to have a great time, they figure ‘why no longer give poker a attempt?’ in spite of everything, how different can it be from the home sport they have performed their whole lives?”
–Matt damon as mike mcdermott in “rounders”
For maximum people, our first poker revel in become nowhere close to a casino. both we found out from pals or family contributors in domestic games, or we plugged into the web poker craze. still, the concept of gambling poker in an actual brick and mortar (b&m) on line casino, with all of the attendant points of interest and sounds, could be very tempting for most. so what do you need to understand when shifting your home or online capabilities to on line casino play? there are many differences between online and b&m play, but two elements you may at once need to take into account are tells and on line casino type.
1. Tells
The primary situation the general public have while moving from online to b&m play regards tells. a inform is a bodily motion a player performs that can deliver warring parties a clue to his hand, along with placing a hand to the face while bluffing. on-line, seeing that your opponents cannot see you, physical tells are not absolutely concern (there are on line tells, but this is past the scope of this newsletter). in fact, one popular poker site has an advertising marketing campaign wherein they invite the ones gamers who’ve a “awful poker face” to join, when you consider that nobody can see your face on line. within the film “rounders,” quoted at the beginning of this article, the villain is undone through the manner in which he handles an oreo cookie depending on whether or not or not he has a huge hand. in fact, tells are hardly ever this severe. maximum of the time when you play in a casino, especially a “traveller” casino (see following), your fighters are tons more concerned with what they may be keeping than what you’re. even when an opponent scrutinizes you, staring you down even as thinking of a call, they’re generally just thinking about how tons they like their personal hand. actual tell-spotting calls for lengthy, cautious remark of a player’s tendencies; you are no longer likely to present plenty away on an person hand  Yes Casino. specialists like to provide the impact that they can simply look proper into your soul and realize what you’re protecting, however there may be plenty extra to it than that. in case you’re clearly involved you could buy a pair of reflective sun shades to put on so no person can see your eyes. you can additionally continually wait a predetermined quantity of time (5 or ten seconds) earlier than performing whether your hand is powerful or not so robust and pick a predetermined spot on the table to stare at while waiting for someone to reply on your motion.
2. kind of casino
All casinos are not created identical. ten years in the past, before the explosion in poker recognition, most casinos did now not have a poker room at all, or at exceptional, a small section of the blackjack floor partitioned away where two or three $1 to $2 restriction video games may take place. obviously, things are different now, but there are nonetheless enormously exclusive forms of casinos wherein one might play poker. the primary is a card club. these are most typically discovered in locations like california, in which poker as a recreation of skill is felony, but a few other playing games are not. although they’ve accelerated to other games, these clubs are frequently designed to play poker. as such, you’re probable to locate the most experienced poker gamers here, even though not necessarily the most powerful and that they have their proportion of travelers as well. the extra common kind of casino is a las vegas style casino. those casinos have made fortunes on blackjack, slot machines and roulette and did now not certainly awareness on poker in the past as it isn’t always a massive money maker for the on line casino. unlike the opposite games, that are towards the residence (the on line casino) and are dependent in order that the house continually wins ultimately, poker is a sport where the on line casino handiest makes money with the aid of taking a percentage of each pot (referred to as “the rake,” generally no greater than $four a pot) for themselves. despite the fact that now rare, some casinos take “time” instead of a rake, which means every half of hour a representative of the on line casino comes round and collects a predetermined sum of money from each participant in the sport.
of those las vegas style casinos, you’ll locate what i think of as poker casinos vs. visitor casinos. a poker on line casino is one that has usually had poker as a part of its draw. these encompass the bellagio and the mirage in las vegas and the taj mahal and borgata in atlantic town. a traveller on line casino is one of the aforementioned casinos that did now not have poker at all until the recent increase made it profitable as a draw to get players into their casino. of course each of these varieties of casinos cater to tourists, but the poker casinos are in which you are much more likely to discover specialists. which of those kinds is greater in your taste is for the character to decide.
the maximum important factor to don’t forget is that whether or not it’s on-line or inside the casino, poker is poker. play a smart game and also you have to rake within the chips, whether or not they are virtual or made of clay.

Red Dead Redemption 2: A Review
The Good
Red Dead Redemtion 2 came out last October to a grand opening. It is certainly an instant classic and further cemented Rockstars reputation as one of the few AAA developers to make truly AAA worthy games. But, is this game really that flippin' fantastic?
spoilers
#1-The Story
This games biggest strength has got to be its story. Arthur's redemption and how it conflicts with Dutch's Micah fueled descent into madness is what anchors the main storyline. There are many moving parts within these two opposing forces that sometimes overlap and other times occur almost as in a vacuum. What makes it brilliant is that each mission and camp scene reveals something new about the characters involved, unfolds more of who they think they are and who they really are. It is a difficult thing to do for two pages, let alone a 60 hour game but somehow Rockstar pulled it off. The side content (or stranger missions) also all fit in to the story and expand characters for the player. Whether helping Mary or robbing with Micah, the player always learns more about Arthur and the people involved and to me, it's fascinating. Within the story there are important themes that are masterfully explored. To name a few: Obviously, the idea of redemption plays a huge role in the games plot but I think it has an equal partner in the question of can someone really change? or do they just become more of who they were? The comparison of the two ideas is played out beautifully with Dutch and Arthur. There is also the clashing of ideologies, with Dutch and his gang being anarchist facing a rapid expasion of civilisation. And of course, the dying out of the old west outlaw comes in with the theme of change which graces every character and mission in this game.
#1.5-The Characters
In the end, this game hinges on it's characters. Every member of the gang is their own person with their own reasons for riding with Dutch and their own desires driving them in life and this makes for an exceptional game. Now, every character is great but there a few who stand out to me that really make the game shine. Arthur is a complex fellow whose moral compass is a bit of roulette wheel due to game design but no matter how you play the story it is clear that he thinks of the gang as his family and Dutch as his father. Speaking of Dutch, he is also an exceedingly complex character whose goals and ambitions come to define him and shape him into the man we see in Red Dead Redemption. Charles is a good man whose situation is defined by his heritage and skin color rather than his own actions; he is by far the most likable member of the gang. We see John Marston go from a childish manboy who never takes responsibilty to the family man trying to bury his past. Sadie Adler (oh boy), while I don't like when seemingly pedestrian characters go from hunting housewife to gang killing badass, I gotta admit, Sadie did grow on me. Her transformation is sadly unseen for the most part but I think that is because Rockstar cut out a few missions with her involved. Last, but cerainly not least, Rains Fall and Eagle Flies. Rockstar does an amazing job with writing these two opposing father and son characters and their tragic story. They portray the Native American not as savages or perfect helpless victims, but as real people in a lose-lose situation with their own faults and personalities outside of their struggles. Each character is fully realized and interesting in their own way and they carry this game through its shortcomings.
#2-Voice Acting
Roger Clark is an excellent lead throughout the entire game with absolutely zero dips in quality. Aside from Clark, Benjamin Byron Davis makes a return as Dutch as well as Rob Wietoff for John Marston. Davis does an amazing job with his expanded role and Wietoff is great at making John into the John we see in RDR1. Peter Blomquist made me hate Micah Bell more than I ever hated a fictional person before and that is an accomplishment. I could go on down the cast lineup but it is safe to assume that each voice is directed and performed incredibly.
#3-and, uh, the GRAPHICS
While I am not a believer in the idea that great graphics makes for a great game, the realism is important in this title. Motion capture was used extensively (like, even on the horses) and it gives that whole game a grounded feeling. Like, yeah, people move like this in real life. It beautifully accents the voice acting and really gives the player the full impact of the story as though they were watching a movie.
The Bad
#1-The Rootin' Tootin' Shootin'
Rockstar has been using RAGE (Rockstar Advanced Gaming Engine) for over a decade now and it is starting to show its age. While playing the game, getting into cover felt like guess work sometimes. I would hit right bumper and instead of going for the rock right in front of Mr. Morgan, he would get behind a tree 3 yards away with his back to the people shooting at him. This clumsiness is horrible because the actual shooting is pretty fun. What was introduced as a Table Tennis simulator (seriously) has made some seriously impressive games but the combat has become stale and clunky. Hopefully, they will focus on fine tuning the combat because the engine is great at making vivid worlds with powerful draw distances, which is perfect for what Rockstar does.
#2-Oh, That's Your Fast Travel?
Rockstar made a huge map. It is massive even without the epilogue and the only free transportation the player has is a horse? "Well, Rockstar developers, will there be a fast travel system in place? Oh, only in camp and inaccessible from literally anywhere else?" Seriously, why did they make a huge map with such slow transportation and only one way to fast travel? I cannot count the number of times I misclicked and sent myself to the other side of the map and had to take a longer trip. Also, there was no way to fast travel back to camp, free or payed. It was a real hassle and felt like game padding to me.
#3-The Length
This is a 60 hour game. That is more than two days of content and while most of it is a gripping story, there are some definite dips in gameplay. The fast travel system, or lack thereof, is the biggest contributor to this unwanted down time in the game. The player has to ride out for 5 minutes to one mission where they ride halfway back to camp. It's even worse when the mission is nowhere near a fast travel point should the player even be in camp at the time. Also, the lack of mission variety begins to show after chapter 5, with each mission being a shooting gallary while trying to protect certain people. Not every late-game mission is this way but enough to where it is a bit monotonous.
The Ugly...Verdict
Well, it's far from ugly. Overall, I give the game a solid 4/5 with it being one of the best games I've played since The Witcher 3. High and well deserved praise.

It might become slightly less than that when exams take place, but I’d always communicate that beforehand.
DETAILS.
Character’s Name: Haven Caldwell Desired FC: Madelaine Petsch Character’s Age: Twenty - Four Character’s Species: Immortal Witch Character’s Sexuality: Bisexual
BIOGRAPHY.
Power — what everyone wants and so few get. Those who are lucky are born with it, silver spoons dangling out of the corners of their mouths, blissfully unaware of the struggles plaguing the less fortunate. Those who are not quite as lucky choose to take it, tear it from the grasp of those who hardly deserve it, and claim what’s rightfully theirs. You see, power is the empty chamber in a game of Russian roulette, and only a few ever dare to have the balls to pull the trigger. You have to play the game to be rewarded. After all, Haven Caldwell was always destined for more than what the world gave her.
In hindsight, it might be hard for one to believe Haven had been a happy child, the apple of her parents’ eye. They doted on her as any parents would, spoiled her the way only an only child could be spoiled. The streets of New York were her own personal playground, a concrete jungle gym just for her. As the child of an original witch, magic had never been a secret, whispered about in the dark as though it was something to be feared. Rather, it had been embraced, uplifted. Haven would sit at the kitchen table and watch with glee as fire sparked from her mother’s fingertips, flames licking at the skin. She would clap her little hands together and exclaim that the fire was the same color as her hair; her mother would coo at the excitement, press a kiss to her daughter’s forehead, flames dissipating as quickly as they came. She always wanted to be just like her mother, imagining what it would feel like to have fire at her fingers, hungry for a power she just knew she had to possess. And her mother, her dear, darling mother… well, every mother wants a mini-me.
Of course, you don’t always get what you want. Holistic Witch. The result of splitting a bloodline one too many times; the result of a family not knowing how to take care of their own. The revelation had come when her mother could no longer hide it, when she stopped being able to explain it away with coos of “you’re just a late bloomer sweetheart,” when it became apparent to Haven herself that she and her mother were not one and the same. According to the story, her grandfather had fallen for a human, marrying for love and not for power — her mother, drunk on love and foolish… so very foolish, had made the same mistake. Her mother had been one of the lucky ones, the first result of the first split, still an Original. Still powerful, still lauded, still destined for greatness. Haven had not. Just as quickly as she yearned for the fire at her fingertips, she learned to resent the flames sparking from her mother’s. Holistic Witch. Destined to always be seen as less than, inferior. Her mother swore it didn’t change anything, that she could still be powerful, still be great, but Haven was far from stupid. This changed everything.
At sixteen, Haven’s relationship with her mother deteriorated. She grew far too resentful of the woman who had lied to her, kept her in the dark regarding the truth. She knew it killed her mother to watch her only daughter grow cold when they’d once been inseparable, but her mother kept her distance, knowing it was the least that she could do. Looking back on it, maybe Haven had felt a little guilty for pushing her mother away. But you know what they say about trust: it’s a mirror, and you can fix it when it’s broke, but you’ll always see a crack in the reflection. At seventeen, her mother bonded with a wolf familiar — he’d been nice, Haven supposed, though she didn’t have much of an opinion one way or another at first. He’d integrated into their world seamlessly, a long lost member of the family, a way to bridge the gap. It was a slow start, but his arrival had triggered something in Haven: she wasn’t quite ready to forgive her mother for the years of being left in the dark, but she was getting there. He’d offered them protection, security.
At eighteen, Haven discovered that the wolf was offering up dick in exchange for that protection. She was never meant to know; she wasn’t supposed to be home early that afternoon. She was supposed to be out with her friends, giggling her way down 5th Avenue, arms linked with a pretty girl who wore an even prettier smile. But she’d left her wallet at home, perched on the kitchen counter. It was only a quick detour to go back and grab it after school. She’d found them in the living room, her mother not having the decency to use her marriage bed, caught up in each other. One screaming match later and several pleas from her mother for her not to go, Haven was out the door, a fraction of her belongings in hand. Running away wasn’t the smartest or the most logical choice, but she couldn’t pretend everything was okay, that her mother hadn’t ruined everything over and over and over again.
She made the most of wandering on her own for a few years, relying on her mother’s naivety — the woman never cut her off, always hoping that Haven would see the error of her own ways and come crawling back. She made friends in both high and low places, listened to the whisperings of the magical world, biding her time and honing her craft. It had been a shock when the rumor first swirled, the murmurings of a witch who had achieved immortality pressed to the shell of her ear; the man who told her of the rumors knew of her desires and presented her with the golden ticket, sending her on her merry way.
Haven wanted power.
Thierry wanted a coven.
Maybe that was the beginning, and the end, of everything.
PERSONALITY.
Ruthless. Calculating. Cold. Detached. Angry. They always used to say that Haven was only out for Haven, willing to send anyone and everyone down the river just to get herself ahead—gone is the happy little girl clapping gleefully in her mother’s kitchen. She has a flair for the dramatics, thrives on being the center of attention. More than anything, though, she despises the notion of being weak. She refuses to be seen as less than and demands the respect she knows she deserves. Her behavior teeters on the edge of sadistic, though not without reason. Wolves don’t deserve respect, so why should she treat them with such? Though perhaps more than a little fucked up, she takes pleasure in toying with the wolves for her own amusement, just to keep herself entertained. It’s a stretch, however, to say she lacks humanity—she isn’t a monster by her own definition, though if that’s how others perceive her, that’s on them. However, those she holds a soft spot for are few and far between. You know what they say: there’s something dangerous about the boredom of girls with nothing left to lose and everything to gain.
POLITICS.
It’s safe to say that Haven’s loyalty lies with herself above all else. She’ll do whatever necessary to protect herself first, and worry about her secondary loyalties after. (Really, the only other loyalty she’d have is to Thierry and the Immortal Witches. She’s vicious regarding the wolves given her history, and her stance on Holistic witches isn’t much better. She regards herself as above Original Witches through her newfound identity as an Immortal Witch, thinking of herself as more powerful, but there’s still a unique and deep-seeded resentment towards them that stems from envy.) It’d be interesting to explore interpersonal relationships because she isn’t really a fan of anyone, save for the respect she holds for Thierry and the other Immortal Witches. Again, she teeters on the edge of sadistic in regards to the wolves, toying with them for her own amusement. That’s certainly a dynamic I want to explore and dig a little deeper into.
Though she considers herself to be a manipulator in her own right, I think it’d be interesting to explore how Haven can be manipulated through her quest to get ahead. Promise her more power than what she already has and she’ll take the bait, do someone’s biddingso long as she feels she has control over the situation and is making the choice for herself. Additionally, she’s a bit of a hellraiser. It’d be interesting to see how her emergence impacts the dynamic of the manor as a whole. I’m not interested in a redemption arc; Haven is the product of her situation, absolutely, but that isn’t an excuse, and I don’t want to treat it as such.

So! I’ve been trying to organize my thoughts about YTTD for several days now. It’s a game some friends & mutuals of mine really enjoy, so I feel kinda mean getting this negative about it, but... man. I hate this game’s writing.
Some spoilers (but no ending/death spoilers) below.
Chapter 1 is an imperfect but incredibly ambitious game. The ZE-style puzzles, especially the mirror room and the roulette game, are well-constructed. I had to do some complete guesswork in the first Main Game, but it’s nothing worse than the hail mary passes I’d have to do in Danganronpa or Ace Attorney. I could nitpick several elements of the story, but the overall narrative works, and most of the twists (especially the ones involving Kai) are tight and set up well.
Then, we get to Chapter 2.
I had high hopes, because the introduction scene with Kai is absolutely adorable, but then... new characters, new mechanics, and new arbitrary forms of torture just get thrown at the cast and the player. While the minigames (especially the dancing one) are mostly fun, and have some wonderful failure animations, they simply can’t make up for the story.
I’ll start with the best element first, and that’s Reko. The arc about Reko’s former band is probably the side story that gets the most cohesive resolution out of anyone’s in the cast (even if it’s not a happy one). I have my biases - aggressive rocker chick with a heart of gold is my jam, look at how much I worship Phi! - but Reko really gets her moments in 2-1, and that flashback at the beginning of 2-2 is legit the most emotional I’ve been while playing. Alice, too, is a real star of this chapter, going from being one of my least faves in Chapter 1 to a fave by the end.
Other than some incredibly cute Gin moments, and some welcome development with Nao in 2-1 and Keiji in 2-2...  that’s where the positives end.
Pacing is an issue that plagues this whole chapter. Chapter 1 had this hurried element to it, where even though you weren’t on a physical timer, it really felt like the cast’s stress and despair were building at an exponential rate. In Chapter 2... spreading out the plot over several days (most likely to accommodate the minigames and negotiation phases) removes so much of the immediate danger. Nankidai could have done something with that waiting period, maybe a little more existential horror, but all we really get are some bloody hallucinations, and the impact quickly wears off after the first one. Especially when you know you can “fix” them with a machine.
I thought Mary was one of the weakest elements in Chapter 1, but I’d gladly take her back over the floor masters in Chapter 2, all of whom feel like they came straight out of Villain Stereotypes 101, no matter how cool their designs are. And it’s one thing for them to alternately support and abuse the players, but when they start turning on each other... it’s like, okay?? Thanks for reinforcing the arbitrary nature of this game? It still doesn’t make things good? If anything, it just cheapens the deaths of the actual players even more.
And I know some people really like “Sou”’s story, but it’s like... it ain’t for me. There’s too many nonsensical moments. When he gets his “amnesia”, why does everyone trust Kanna to take care of him? Once Sara finds out he’s lying, there’s this cool moment where you think he’s going to emotionally blackmail her and only her, which could have some nice tension - and yet less than five minutes later, Keiji and Q-Taro have called him out and he’s gone back to being the most obvious asshole he can be. And then he gets a few sympathetic moments, some more blackmail, and the world’s shortest redemption arc, and none of it works. I went through the Main Game in 2-2 just wanting it to end (and I can’t really get much more into the rest of 2-2 without spoiling everything).
But I think the best way to talk about this game is via its two youngest characters, Kanna and Gin. Let’s start with Kanna: she’s pretty much a cosmic chew toy, totally fucked up since the very beginning of the game. For someone so vital to the plot, she doesn’t get much development outside of her relationships with her sister, or Sou, or Sara - there’s very little on who she is as a person, or what makes her unique. That makes it fairly hard to invest in her, even as she’s delivering what are supposed to be very powerful, emotional lines. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one thinking this, since she gets among the least fandom content out of any of the cast. Maybe she’ll get more development in a hypothetical Chapter 3, but... who knows?
Then there’s Gin. I think we can all agree Gin is wonderful. His speech pattern, woof, it’s incredible, meow. I certainly went out of my way to make sure big sis Sara was looking after him in every available negotiation segment. But he’s got the opposite problem to Kanna - I don’t want to see anything bad happen to this kid. Nankidai knows this, which is why he continues to specifically put Gin in death traps for him to be rescued before he suffers any physical damage, and it’s like... stooooppppp. Stop!! If you keep going back to the well with this almost-torturing Gin, it’s gonna lose its impact, because he’ll soon be not much more than a continually kicked puppy. He deserves better. He deserves a lot better.
Everyone in the cast deserves better.
Nankidai should be commended for pushing RPG Maker to its absolute limits as an engine, and YTTD is one of the most impressive solo-creator games I’ve ever played. But impressive doesn’t equal good. And several beautiful coats of paint can’t save an atrocious plot.
-
P.S. Unrelated to the above rant, but as I was writing and editing this over the course of a few days, I saw that one of the main ships in the fandom is Sara & Keiji and WHAT THE ABSOLUTE FUCK

Since the EU referendum got under way in the UK, it has become almost an everyday occurence to turn on the TV and hear some politician explaining "I don't mean to sound racist, but..." (example)
Of course, if you didn't mean to sound racist, you wouldn't sound racist in the first place, now would you?
The reality is, whether you like politics or not, political leaders have a significant impact on society and the massive rise in UK hate crimes, including deaths of Polish workers, is a direct reflection of the leadership (or profound lack of it) coming down from Westminster. Maybe you don't mean to sound racist, but if this is the impact your words are having, maybe it's time to shut up?
Choosing your referendum
Why choose to have a referendum on immigration issues and not on any number of other significant topics? Why not have a referendum on nuking Mr Putin to punish him for what looks like an act of terrorism against the Malaysian Airlines flight MH17? Why not have a referendum on cutting taxes or raising speed limits, turning British motorways into freeways or an autobahn? Why choose to keep those issues in the hands of the Government, but invite the man-in-a-white-van from middle England to regurgitate Nigel Farage's fears and anxieties about migrants onto a ballot paper?
Even if David Cameron sincerely hoped and believed that the referendum would turn out otherwise, surely he must have contemplated that he was playing Russian Roulette with the future of millions of innocent people?
Let's start at the top
For those who are fortunate enough to live in parts of the world where the press provides little exposure to the antics of British royalty, an interesting fact you may have missed is that the Queen's husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh is actually a foreigner. He was born in Greece and has Danish and German ancestry. Migration (in both directions) is right at the heart of the UK's identity.
Home office minister Amber Rudd recently suggested British firms should publish details about how many foreign people they employ and in which positions. She argued this is necessary to help boost funding for training local people.
If that is such a brilliant idea, why hasn't it worked for the Premier League? It is a matter of public knowledge how many foreigners play football in England's most prestigious division, so why hasn't this caused local clubs to boost training budgets for local recruits? After all, when you consider that England hasn't won a World Cup since 1966, what have they got to lose?
All this racism, it's just not cricket. Or is it? One of the most remarkable cricketers to play for England in recent times, Kevin Pietersen, dubbed "the most complete batsman in cricket" by The Times and "England's greatest modern batsman" by the Guardian, was born in South Africa. In the five years he was contracted to the Hampshire county team, he only played one match, because he was too busy representing England abroad. His highest position was nothing less than becoming England's team captain.
Are the British superior to every other European citizen?
One of the implications of the rhetoric coming out of London these days is that the British are superior to their neighbours, entitled to have their cake and eat it too, making foreigners queue up at Paris' Gare du Nord to board the Eurostar while British travelers should be able to walk or drive into European countries unchallenged.
This superiority complex is not uniquely British, you can observe similar delusions are rampant in many of the places where I've lived, including Australia, Switzerland and France. America's Donald Trump has taken this style of politics to a new level.
Look in the mirror Theresa May: after British 10-year old schoolboys Robert Thompson and Jon Venables abducted, tortured, murdered and mutilated 2 year old James Bulger in 1993, why not have all British schoolchildren fingerprinted and added to the police DNA database? Why should "security" only apply based on the country where people are born, their religion or skin colour?
In fact, after Brexit, people like Venables and Thompson will remain in Britain while a Dutch woman, educated at Cambridge and with two British children will not. If that isn't racism, what is?
Running foreigner's off the roads
Theresa May has only been Prime Minister for less than a year but she has a history of bullying and abusing foreigners in her previous role in the Home Office. One example of this was a policy of removing driving licenses from foreigners, which has caused administrative chaos and even taken away the licenses of many people who technically should not have been subject to these regulations anyway.
Shouldn't the DVLA (Britain's office for driving licenses) simply focus on the competence of somebody to drive a vehicle? Bringing all these other factors into licensing creates a hostile environment full of mistakes and inconvenience at best and opportunities for low-level officials to engage in arbitrary acts of racism and discrimination.
Of course, when you are taking your country on the road to nowhere, who needs a driving license anyway?
What does "maximum control" over other human beings mean to you?
The new British PM has said she wants "maximum control" over immigrants. What exactly does "maximum control" mean? Donald Trump appears to be promising "maximum control" over Muslims, Hitler sought "maximum control" over the Jews, hasn't the whole point of the EU been to avoid similar situations from ever arising again?
This talk of "maximum control" in British politics has grown like a weed out of the UKIP. One of their senior figures has been linked to kidnappings and extortion, which reveals a lot about the character of the people who want to devise and administer these policies. Similar people in Australia aspire to jobs in the immigration department where they can extort money out of people for getting them pushed up the queue. It is no surprise that the first member of Australia's parliament ever sent to jail was put there for obtaining bribes and sexual favours from immigrants. When Nigel Farage talks about copying the Australian immigration system, he is talking about creating jobs like these for his mates.
Even if "maximum control" is important, who really believes that a bunch of bullies in Westminster should have the power to exercise that control? Is May saying that British bosses are no longer competent to make their own decisions about who to employ or that British citizens are not reliable enough to make their own decisions about who they marry and they need a helping hand from paper-pushers in the immigration department?
Echoes of the Third Reich
Most people associate acts of mass murder with the Germans who lived in the time of Adolf Hitler. These are the stories told over and and over again in movies, books and the press.
Look more closely, however, and it appears that the vast majority of Germans were not in immediate contact with the gas chambers. Even Gobels' secretary writes that she was completely oblivious to it all. Many people were simply small cogs in a big bad machine. The clues were there, but many of them couldn't see the big picture. Even if they did get a whiff of it, many chose not to ask questions, to carry on with their comfortable lives.
Today, with mass media and the Internet, it is a lot easier for people to discover the truth if they look, but many are still reluctant to do so.
Consider, for example, the fingerprint scanners installed in British post offices and police stations to fingerprint foreigners and criminals (as if they have something in common). If all the post office staff refused to engage in racist conduct the fingerprint scanners would be put out of service. Nonetheless, these people carry on, just doing their job, just following orders. It was through many small abuses like this, rather than mass murder on every street corner, that Hitler motivated an entire nation to serve his evil purposes.
Technology like this is introduced in small steps: first it was used for serious criminals, then anybody accused of a crime, then people from Africa and next it appears they will try and apply it to all EU citizens remaining in the UK.
How will a British man married to a French woman explain to their children that mummy has to be fingerprinted by the border guard each time they return from vacation?
The Nazis pioneered biometric technology with the tracking numbers branded onto Jews. While today's technology is electronic and digital, isn't it performing the same function?
There is no middle ground between "soft" and "hard" brexit
An important point for British citizens and foreigners in the UK to consider today is that there is no compromise between a "soft" Brexit and a "hard" Brexit. It is one or the other. Anything less (for example, a deal that is "better" for British companies and worse for EU citizens) would imply that the British are a superior species and it is impossible to imagine the EU putting their stamp on such a deal. Anybody from the EU who is trying to make a life in the UK now is playing a game of Russian Roulette - sure, everything might be fine if it morphs into "soft" Brexit, but if Theresa May has her way, at some point in your life, maybe 20 years down the track, you could be rounded up by the gestapo and thrown behind bars for a parking violation. There has already been a five-fold increase in the detention of EU citizens in British concentration camps and they are using grandmothers from Asian countries to refine their tactics for the efficient removal of EU citizens. One can only wonder what type of monsters Theresa May has been employing to run such inhumane operations.
This is not politics
Edmund Burke's quote "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing" comes to mind on a day like today. Too many people think it is just politics and they can go on with their lives and ignore it. Barely half the British population voted in the referendum. This is about human beings treating each other with dignity and respect. Anything less is abhorrent and may well come back to bite.
