we split up for the first ride at disneyland because we all had different priorities before we actually began the game.
hyunjin and I ended up at ‘the enchanted tale of beauty and beast’, an animated retelling which included a whole setup of the beast’s castle too. plus, since it was his and my favourite disney tale, we had even more fun.
hyunjin was more attentive towards the camera (for our vlog) because I couldn’t care less about it when I was watching a retelling of my favourite story.
soon after, to begin our ‘quests’, we had to start participating in rides and games together.
in the ‘monsters inc. ride and go seek’ game, we tallied our scores by the end to see which team could ‘reveal’ the maximum number of monsters (the rules of any of the games didn’t make sense, but who cared?).
I dragged han and minho with me to ‘pooh’s honey hunt’, which counted more as a story and less as a game, but for the sake of nostalgia and love for the old cartoon, we went.
lastly, we went to the haunted mansion with mini loudness indicators strapped to our collars to see who could get the least and highest scores.
we entered in a line, one behind the other, but quickly shuffled around (as soon as the door shut loudly) with muffled yelps.
my eyes adjusted to the dark pretty quickly, which I guess I owe to the countless nights I spent in practice rooms without many lights.
I saw hyunjin and felix holding hands tightly. han and jeongin clung tightly to chris’ shirt. changbin’s eyes were wide open, trying to see better. seungmin was as non-chalant as you’d expect him to be. and at last, I looked down to see minho’s fingers interlaced tightly with mine.
“scared kitty?” I whispered to him, and flashed him a grin.
“you wish,” he scoffed. “it’s because you’re gonna get scared later.”
“liar,” I remarked, and he nodded a little.
he was, indeed, a liar. and he knew it when we exited the haunted mansion and the staff told us that his and han’s were the loudest screams to be recorded.
“lee know-ssi and jisung-ssi were louder than the rest. hyunjin-ssi and y/n-ssi barely made any sound, though,” a staff member said.
“how was hyunjin less louder than the rest of us? he’s literally a drama queen!” seungmin protested. hyunjin stuck his tongue out at seungmin and walked away with that attitude of his.
by the time the sun set, the ‘electrical parade dreamlights’, a nighttime light parade, began.
all the members and I were walking slowly as we watched the lights flicker once in a while.
I was reviewing footage from the day, and I came across one video from a rollercoaster.
minho was sitting next to me, and the video was a little blurry. I asked him if he was okay, because of his fear of heights. and the fact that he was sitting beside me, in the first row.
“if you fall, i’ll catch you,” I said to him, joking.
“I already did,” he whispered, smiling softly at me, before the rollercoaster began and the audio was just felix and hannie screaming their lungs out.
I replayed the video twice, just to process what he had said. I hadn’t heard it when he said it on the rollercoaster because of han’s constant bickering from the second row. but… now? now, I was listening to the same clip. twice. thrice.
was I reading too much into it? or… what?
“I need food,” minho’s voice grumbled beside me. he sat down and rested his head on my shoulder. I tensed for a second, before relaxing. his presence felt comfortable, and the heat radiating from his body felt like home.
“you should try winning some time, then,” I taunted him. he pushed his head up from my shoulder and glared at me.
“noona!” jeongin’s voice suddenly boomed like a speaker was installed in place of his voice box.
he came skipping to the bench. “isn’t this footage perfect for the cover?”
he played the video, shoving himself in between minho and me.
the video he recorded was just a few frames long, from the time during sunset, and everything was chaotic… except, my eyes kept straying to a small set of pixelated hands brushing against each other—minho’s and mine.
it felt like a cute detail to leave in the video, and just thinking about it made blood rush to my neck and cheeks.
I compliment jeongin on his extremely clever and strategic cameramanship, and left the ‘loser table’ to go to the winners’ table—my table.
somehow, han, hyunjin, and I had won most of the challenges. we got delicious food as a result, while the other members were given boring meals.
I looked back to a sulking minho and slipped him some of my pudding and a slice of hyune’s chicken pizza. his eyes twinkled as he smiled.
soon after, we ended up sharing all our food with the rest of the members and staff as well, who had worked hard in keeping the chaotic kids in line for an entire day.
we returned to our hotel rooms, and all of us fell asleep in a huge cuddle pile in chan’s room.

PSA for today - ive been a whole adult for, like, a while and i didn't understand interest on credit until it was requried for companies extending credit to show you the total amount you'll pay if you make only the minimum payment and how long it will take like RIP no thank you that big lots couch is not worth $8000 I'll pass lmao
we had a mini split installed in our house with no AC and wall/ceiling heat and we took - accidentally, I might add - a 0% internet financing plan. This made the payments SO FUCKING HIGH and I called our installers and explained I was confused and the way I read the email about the choice of plans was wrong is there any way to fix that so we're paying the regular plan with interest? So they said they'd fix it and lo and behold fuck me they did not. BUT I saw how much total I would pay after 5 years with interest vs paying only the amount we financed with 0% interest and you know what? nevermind, I'll pay twice the amount monthly now vs paying twice the amount total in the long run. This wasn't a small amount, 9k vs 18k with interest. Insane.
They should make highschoolers run these numbers on different purchases. Your car is 40k? Fuck you, no it's not, its 90k with interest. Your $60 shiny bauble you put on your credit card? $200 now.
I used to make jacking off hand motions and roll my eyes when I heard people talking about tightening your belt and paying off all your debt and being as debt free as possible but damn, they were right.

Dominic is working on his bar while we’re down here. He did the electrical and some of the water. Now he’s installing a mini split air conditioner.
These are his talents. For me, I arrange words into pleasing patterns of thought. Weird how people like to spend their spare time.

Ooooh.... Here's a crack AU I made up ages ago!
So, in this AU, when Ezra was young (like... three, maybe,) there was an accident and his parents were killed. And something happened in that accident that revealed he was Force-sensitive. He was brought to Vader, and Vader sees this child—small, but VERY Force-sensitive, and born almost the exact same day Padme died—and his reaction is just, "SON?????"
So... Ezra grows up believing that Vader is his dad.
Anyway, several years pass. Ezra is about twelve now, and he gets his first mission.
It's on Mandalore.
One of the instructors there is beginning to suspect that Sabine Wren is considering treason. Ezra is sent there, disguised as a new student, to "befriend" Sabine and discover if this is true. It backfires spectacularly!
Ezra decides that Sabine is The Coolest Ever, Actually, and sticks to her like a barnacle. They run away from the Academy together (though Ezra does leave a voicemail for Vader telling him everything is OK. He just doesn't want his dad to worry!)
Ezra says he'd like to go live quietly on Lothal (he doesn't remember it's his home, but something about the name sounds Familiar and Good), but Sabine doesn't want to. She says she'll drop him off and then she'll go and be a bounty hunter, but Ezra, who REALLY doesn't want to lose his new bestie, insists that he could be her bounty hunter apprentice. He's, like, really good at being an apprentice. Honest.
Sabine kind of has it in mind that he's this pathetic kid that she needed to babysit and rescue from the Empire (she doesn't know who he really is; Ezra honestly just forgot to ever mention it), but he convinces her to give it a shot.
So, here's the thing. Ezra was raised by Darth Vader, and though he's not actively evil, Ezra's moral compass is a pinwheel and in his mind, the only reason to not do something is if either Vader or Sabine have specifically said Ezra No That's Bad.
After a lot of bad luck, they finally get a bounty puck, and set off to bring the person in. They get to the planet, and Sabine suggests they split up, because she thinks she'll catch the bounty much faster on her own.
She doesn't.
By the time she realizes she needs to follow the sound of people screaming and running, Ezra has already located, ambushed, and messily dismembered the bounty.
"Did I do good?" Ezra asks eagerly.
Sabine quickly switches mindsets from I have to keep this kid from getting himself killed to I have to keep this kid from having a villain arc.
"Um, are you okay?" Ezra asks. "You look kind of weird."
"I'm fine," Sabine says, smiling nervously. "Y'know, maybe we should just go live quietly on Lothal or something."
As it turns out, "living quietly on Lothal" is fun for about a month (which is how long it takes Sabine to paint the entire inside of the comm tower they've claimed as their headquarters, install bunk beds, dye Ezra's hair, and make mini cardboard mandalorian helmets for the two Loth-cats he brought home.) Then boredom sets in, and Sabine takes to vandalism. Ezra goes with her. He thinks it's almost as fun as bounty hunting.
Ezra also spends time exploring the Force. He's been trained in the Dark side but the peacefulness of Lothal starts to draw him towards the Light. He starts to find an equilibrium.
Sabine and Ezra have the time of their lives.
Then, one afternoon, about a year later, when Sabine and Ezra are working on an art project, Darth Vader barges into the comm tower and demands, "Do you have any idea how much trouble you're in, young man?!"
"Aww, Dad!" Ezra whines. "You never let me do anything!"
In hindsight, Sabine thinks, that explains a lot.

Go With Me Review
“Go With Me” manages to give more insight into multiple different character dynamics in the span of 11 minutes. Finn and Bubblegum, Jake and Marceline, Finn and Marceline, and Marcy and PB have series defining moments for their relationships, with even some super insightful Finn and Jake interaction sprinkled in. Not even the 90-minute Stakes miniseries manages to accomplish that.
Despite Finn’s puppy love for Princess Bubblegum, Finn does not understand romance nor is ready for it. Despite this, Jake pushes Finn to bring a date to couple’s movie night. Jake and Marceline encourage Finn to pursue someone who is too old for him, albeit for different reasons. Jake has a naive view of romance, and has no frame of reference for how to help a (barely) teen human boy deal with his feelings. He views Finn as someone capable of having true romantic feelings, which Finn clearly isn’t yet. Finn immediately shoots down PB’s description of the night as “romantic”. PB declines for whistling practice. I don’t think this was just an excuse to turn down Finn. Bubblegum finds Finn's crush on her cute and harmless in the first two seasons. I think she’d be willing to humor him by attending, not yet knowing the effect that kind of behavior has on Finn. Jake gives more terrible advice, pushing Finn to keep pursuing PB.
Marcy’s introduction into this episode is great, with the slow split screen reveal of her presence. It’s also the first of many times we see her hiding inside the Treehouse. Jake reveals that he has gotten over his fear of vampires. While Marceline can still easily spook him, it's nice that Jake has finally come around to Marcy like Finn did in “Henchman”. I love how Finn and Jake both get separate mini-arcs throughout a few episodes before they each accept Marceline as a friend. Marceline not being able to go out in the sun (before they got lazy and just started photoshopping sunscreen bottles into title cards) is already enough of a barrier to work her into plots, we don’t need Jake’s fear as another one. They had a funny workaround in “It Came From the Nightosphere”, but I’m glad they retired it. I love how they still address this development. Most shows would have just given up on the running gag without an explanation to make writing episodes easier.
In order to make Peebles jealous, Finn and Marcy pretend to have a great banter session outside Bubblegum’s window. This leads to our first ever interaction between Princess Bubblegum and Marceline, the second most iconic character duo in the series, and one of the most famous character dynamics in cartoon history. While it takes 103 episodes for Marceline to interact with Ice King, and 170 for Lumpy Space Princess, Marcy gets to interact with a member of the main cast that isn’t Finn and Jake in season two! Even without the context from future episodes, this scene gives a lot of clues to their relationship. There is clear tension between them. It is obvious they have a history, with Marceline calling PB by her first name, something we haven’t even seen Finn do up to this point. It’s satisfying seeing how well this scene works with information provided a decade later in “Obsidian”. Marceline likes to tease PB, and Bubblegum puts up a tough exterior to act like she doesn’t care about Marcy, like she did while Marcy first sang “Woke Up” in the Glass Kingdom. It’s obvious they’ve had multiple interactions similar to this over the hundreds of years since their break up. Finn’s newfound friendship with Marceline would only force these kinds of interactions to become more frequent. This is probably the most drastic example of an episode being impacted by a later installment in the series. And oh yeah, Princess Bubblegum’s first name is Bonnibel! I love how well her first name flows with Bubblegum. It’s nice having a shorter and easier name for her than “Princess Bubblegum” that isn’t just “PB”. I love getting pieces of character biography like names and ages dropped so casually.
Marceline just wants to get back at her ex as well as have fun messing with her impressionable friend like usual. Marceline literally says her reason for wanting to help is that “it'll be funny”. Of course Marcy knows that wrestling and wolves would do nothing but upset PB. She plays these pranks at the expense of Finn, but Marceline knows to not take Finn’s crush seriously in the first place. Her “advice” is as bad as Jake’s but she isn’t stupid like Jake.
In the process of getting wolves for Marceline’s next plan, we see how much more compatible Finn is with Marcy than PB. They’re both fun, wild animals. Bubblegum reacts appropriately to Finn putting wolves in her room. It's sad seeing her ban Finn from the kingdom. She understands she is dealing with a child and that Finn has a good heart, so she keeps the door open for when Finn starts behaving better. She knows that Finn will come around and it feels more like a parent or teacher disciplining a misbehaving child. I’m sure Bubblegum realized that this was all Marcy’s doing soon enough anyway. On the other hand, the Finn Marceline pairing is a much more fun and refreshing dynamic when compared to PB and Finn. This is purposefully highlighted and something Finn comes to realize. After his latest failure, Marcy tells Finn to forget about Bonnie. I get the feeling that another motivation for Marceline was to sabotage Finn so he wouldn’t keep dealing with the heartache she knows comes with PB.
All of this sets up a fake out that the series would turn to start pushing Finn and Marceline as a romantic pairing. Finn goes to ask Marcy out to the movies instead. Someone getting this close to Marceline makes her uncomfortable. Her reaction is to try to scare Finn away, a tactic she internalized from when she thought she scared her mother away and reinforced in the downfall of her relationship with Princess Bubblegum. Marceline misinterprets Finn’s invitation as a romantic gesture. Marceline and Jake egging Finn on throughout the episode caused this. He is only barely 13, he isn’t ready for that! I like Jake rightfully feeling embarrassed for his actions. Marcy realizes Finn’s intentions and happily goes with Finn as friends. She still can’t give up messing with Finn, with the great “no tongue” comment that went right over his head. I’m very happy the series didn’t go for a Finn, PB, Marceline love triangle. It’s nice for Finn to have a female friend without any baggage. The episode teased Finnceline for the only time in the series, and then immediately shot it down forever. Well, forget about “Bad Little Boy”. I’ll discuss that episode’s implications when we get to it.
Finn and Marceline ditch movie night when confronted with the onslaught of make outs. They are truly perfect friends. The episode ends on wolves tearing apart the screen after a couple proclaims that nothing will ever tear them apart. There is a joke in Spongebob that is identical to this, with Plankton instead of the wolves. There is absolutely no way that it’s a coincidence.
“Go With Me” is the third and sadly last Finn and Marceline duo episode. While I think “It Came From the Nightosphere” is the overall better episode, I think this is the best showcase of their relationship in the series. It's great seeing these character dynamics be explored in a more sitcom-y episode.

Can You Turn a 3 Season Room into a Bedroom?
A 3 season room is a fantastic way to enjoy the outdoors while staying protected from the elements. But can you take it further and turn your 3-season room into a bedroom? The short answer is yes, but it requires thoughtful planning to ensure comfort, insulation, and code compliance. Whether you want to create a cozy guest retreat or a peaceful primary bedroom, let’s explore how to transform work for you.
Understanding What a 3 Season Room Is
Before you dive into renovations, it’s essential to understand what makes a 3 season room different from other spaces in your home. Typically, a 3 season room:
Features large windows or screens to allow fresh air and natural light
It is designed for use in spring, summer, and fall but lacks full insulation for winter
It is not typically connected to a home’s HVAC system
It may have minimal electrical wiring and no plumbing
Since a three-season room was not originally built for year-round living, some upgrades are necessary to make it a comfortable bedroom.
Key Upgrades for Turning a 3 Season Room into a Bedroom
1. Insulation and Temperature Control
The biggest challenge in converting a 3 season room into a bedroom is maintaining a comfortable temperature year-round. Here’s how to tackle it:
Insulate the Walls, Ceiling, and Floor: Proper insulation is necessary to retain heat in winter and keep cool air in during summer.
Install Energy-Efficient Windows: Double-pane or insulated windows can help control temperature and reduce drafts.
Extend Your HVAC System: Connect the room to your home’s heating and cooling system or install a mini-split unit for independent temperature control.
2. Ensuring Proper Electrical and Lighting
If your 3-season room doesn’t already have enough electrical outlets or lighting, an upgrade is necessary:
Add More Electrical Outlets: Bedrooms typically require multiple outlets for convenience.
Install Overhead Lighting or Ceiling Fans: Proper lighting and airflow can enhance comfort.
Check for Code Compliance: Electrical work must meet local building codes to ensure safety.
3. Improving Flooring for Comfort and Warmth
Many 3 season rooms have tile, concrete, or laminate flooring, which can be cold in the winter. Consider these flooring upgrades:
Install carpet or area Rug: These add warmth and comfort underfoot.
Use Heated Flooring: Radiant floor heating can be an excellent way to keep the room cozy in colder months.
Upgrade Subflooring: Adding a proper subfloor with insulation can help prevent heat loss.
4. Enhancing Privacy and Security
A bedroom should offer privacy and security, which a 3 season room might lack due to its open design. Here’s how to make it more bedroom-friendly:
Install Curtains or Blinds: These add privacy while helping with temperature control.
Upgrade the Door: If your 3-season room has a lightweight or glass door, consider replacing it with a more secure and insulated option.
Add Locks and Security Features: Consider additional locks or security film if the room has multiple entry points or large windows.
5. Meeting Building Codes and Permits
Before finalizing your conversion, check with local building codes to ensure compliance:
Egress Windows: Bedrooms must have an accessible exit in case of emergency.
Heating and Cooling Standards: Some areas require bedrooms to have permanent heating sources.
Minimum Room Size Requirements: Make sure the space meets your local standards for a legal bedroom.
Benefits of Converting a 3 Season Room into a Bedroom
Turning your 3 season room into a bedroom comes with several advantages:
Increased Living Space: You get a functional bedroom without adding square footage.
Enhanced Property Value: A well-insulated, finished bedroom can boost your home’s resale value.
A Unique, Cozy Retreat: The space can become a serene, one-of-a-kind bedroom with ample natural light and outdoor views.
Is It Worth It? Things to Consider Before Converting
While the idea of transforming your 3 season room into a bedroom is exciting, consider these factors:
Cost: Upgrades like insulation, HVAC extensions, and electrical work can add up.
Time Commitment: The project could take weeks or even months, depending on the scope.
Alternative Uses: If a bedroom isn’t the best fit, the space could serve as a home office, sunroom, or guest lounge.

Every time my dad visits, I struggle to understand him. I struggle to assess our common understandings. I struggle to interact with him in a meaningful way.
I used to be a car person. I used to dream up the cars I'd own and what mods I would have on them. I'd try them out in Forza, and this is what drove me to get my GED and become a mechanic. I was obsessed. This worked well with my dad because I'd reckon most white guys are car people, too, to some degree. I was enriched with tools for gifts and our time spent talking was almost always about cars and motorcycles.
But that was before. Now, I'm focused on a deeply personal mission to make my community's HVAC system as efficient as possible; arrived at by personally seeking knowledge over years and years, and also running breathlessly into the world of cars and being knocked on my ass by the intolerance of the people in that world.
I got swept up in the mystical world of radios, which paired well with my dad, as well, who got his technician license shortly after I did, because wireless communication appealed to his sense of independence.
Instead of running face-first into hyper-masculinity, I ran into a door too small to squeeze into. Being a radio technician was not to be.
So, I moved onto biology. Also something my dad is interested in. He likes trees and has plenty of urban wildlife stories. But he is over 50, and a few months ago, I taught him that trees actually consume oxygen at night as part of cellular respiration; it was news to him. Biology wasn't to be, either; I was overwhelmed by the workload placed on my by college and I burnt out.
So here I am, now. I've tried on many costumes. I've learned a little in a lot of places. I've sought out a role for myself to fill. I lost interest in cars and motorcycles. I'm always fascinated by life, but I can't focus on it anymore. Radios are always cool, but there's no one to talk to; or any reason to. I'm terrified of diving.
So I have HVAC, now. It's the current costume I'm wearing. I have a moral mission informed by my experiences roasting in the summer and by my ever-increasing knowledge of the climate crisis. It's all I can do. In my free time, I care for my frogs, I play single-player video games, I prepare for D&D with my club. I dream a lot, too. I don't have any partners, in part because I don't know where to meet my people, and in part because I've lost interest in others, but if I did. . . I just know my family would be weird about it at best.
I don't know how to fit either of my parents into my life, if I'm honest. There's no place for them. There's nothing they can do to enrich it. When I'm around them, I feel tense. I don't want to say the wrong thing. I don't want to hear how far apart we are.
My dad took my brother and I to a car museum. I loathe cars, now. I drive one, sure. But I don't care for them. I learned that there's a completely different way of living, and I desire it dearly; why would there be any ounce of love left for them? But I go anyways, because on some level, I have to. The museum stinks of oily rags. It is a familiar smell, but one that now gives me a headache. I do a circuit, then head outside to breathe in the somewhat-fresh air. I say somewhat because the museum is next to I-5, and the tire noise erases anything sweeter that may have once been in its place.
I walk around the side to look at the building's massive outdoor units; two big, 6-comrpessor, 460v AC + boiler units. I am amazed that the compressors have a locked-rotor amp rating of 125. Can you imagine? I spied a mini-split system, too. A Mitsubishi. It uses R-410A and has a base refrigerant weight of 6oz. For every additional 25 feet of line, though, you must add 0.6 oz of refrigerant to it. There is a spot on the label for the installer to record the total weight of refrigerant in the system after install. It is left blank. Poor practice. Anyone servicing it, now, must estimate it by measuring the lines, if they can access them.
I'm supposed to be spending time with my dad, but instead I'm outside, alone. I don't wanna look at old cars who spewed lead into the atmosphere and probably killed their drivers just as often as they killed bystanders. I don't want to see the machines that my world was built around.
The museum has a section on fossil fuels and climate change. I half-expected to see some denial or distortion of history. No doubt there was some, but it's the solution to these issues that annoyed me the most. In essence, the plaques and exhibits said "let's make use of biofuels, hybrids, and electric cars to minimize emissions; and lets use renewable energy sources to reduce the carbon footprint of automobile manufacturing." fucking what. You wanna keep making cars? Unbelievable.
There was not a single mention of reducing car-dependency or electrified rail. My headache got worse. What did I expect? Car people are going to find a way to keep cars in their place.
What does this have to do with my dad? In a way, he's a barometer for sentiments on certain things. He still thinks I'm interested in internal combustion engines. I hate them. I hate their noises and their fumes. I know precisely how they work, and I could fix a broken one, but I despise what they represent and I just wish they would go away. I wish they weren't the topic of conversation anymore.
I'm tired of grave stakes and the horrors of the world. I want to feel hope again. I want to meet people who share my goals. I want to talk about a thriving future. But fuck, it is hard to do in Tacoma. I want to put a heat hump in every home. I want my tools to be part of a tool-sharing program. I want enough resources to contribute to mutual aid. I want electrified public transit so I can get rid of my car. I want bike infrastructure so I can use the damn thing to get around. I want empty parking lots torn up and replaced with green spaces.
I want to be part of it all and I want to talk with the people who already are. And instead I have my family and everyone else in this city. I'm too afraid to speak, lest I risk showing that I don't know enough. Too afraid to tell my dad I'm not interested in these things anymore because then we will have NOTHING. That will be very sad.
I'm tired. I put together a playlist of things to give me hope because I am trudging through a depression, again. Putting them on in the background while I click through Baldur's Gate 3 again because I can't sleep, but I don't have the brain power to write out my next session or do something bold and creative. I'm soulsapped.
Tomorrow will be the last time my niece celebrates her birthday in this state. She, her brother, and my sister are all moving to Illinois. We'll be at our grandparent's place. It is being referred to as the "last time we'll all be together." Grandpa's health is failing. He's about to be in hospice, if he isn't already. On one hand, I should be there just for the sake of it. I know I'd want as many people around if i was dying. Grandpa's always been cooler than his wife. She's the true reason I don't want to go. I don't like being around her.
I don't like all the "God Bless America" shit in her home. What is there to be proud of? I'm getting off track.
There's no point in raising my voice. I must be a neutral vessel everywhere I go. This is the only place I can ever express myself. Outside, I weight my guilt against my desire to push them all away. It is those days where I am compelled to spend time with family where I feel the most trapped.

Can a Heat Pump Heat a Large Home Efficiently?
Exploring Modern Heating Options for Spacious Living
Heating large homes efficiently remains one of the top challenges homeowners face, especially in areas with colder seasons. Traditional heating systems often struggle to deliver balanced warmth while keeping energy costs manageable. This leads many to explore more sustainable and cost-effective alternatives. Among the leading contenders in energy-smart solutions is the heat pump. But can a heat pump truly heat a large home efficiently? The answer lies in understanding its functionality, capacity, and proper installation.
Tumblr media
Understanding the Heat Pump Advantage
A heat pump works by transferring heat rather than generating it. Unlike combustion-based systems, it extracts warmth from the air or ground and moves it indoors during winter. In the summer, the process reverses, offering cooling benefits as well. This dual functionality makes it an attractive choice for homeowners aiming for efficiency and environmental responsibility.
Heat pumps are particularly well-known for their energy efficiency. By using electricity to transfer heat instead of burning fuel, they significantly reduce energy consumption. For larger homes, this can result in dramatic savings over time when compared to conventional heating systems.
Key Factors That Influence Efficiency in Larger Spaces
Not every heat pump is created equally. Several factors determine how well a heat pump will perform in a large residence:
1. System Sizing
To heat a large home efficiently, the system must be properly sized. An undersized unit will struggle to maintain comfort, while an oversized one may cycle on and off too frequently, reducing overall efficiency and lifespan. Accurate load calculations are crucial to match the system's capacity with the home’s square footage, insulation quality, and climate.
2. Type of Heat Pump
There are multiple types of heat pumps available, and their suitability depends on the home's specific needs:
Air-source heat pumps are the most common and use outside air as the heat source.
Ground-source (geothermal) heat pumps use stable underground temperatures, offering consistent performance regardless of outside conditions.
Ductless mini-split systems are ideal for zoned heating in large homes, especially when retrofitting.
Ground-source systems are often preferred for larger homes because of their consistent output and efficiency, especially in regions with colder climates.
Zoning: A Critical Strategy for Large Homes
Zoning enables homeowners to divide their house into different areas or “zones” that can be heated or cooled independently. In large homes, zoning helps improve energy efficiency and comfort by targeting specific areas rather than heating the entire house unnecessarily. Many heat pump systems can integrate with zoning controls, allowing more tailored temperature management.
For example, living areas and bedrooms can be programmed to operate at different temperatures depending on occupancy. This not only enhances comfort but also contributes to lower energy bills.
Supplementary Heating Considerations
In extremely cold climates, some heat pumps may require a supplemental heating source. This doesn’t mean the heat pump is inefficient, but rather that additional heating ensures continuous comfort when temperatures drop significantly. Supplemental sources like electric resistance heaters or integrated backup systems kick in only when needed, keeping the primary system's efficiency intact.
Modern high-efficiency heat pumps are now designed to operate effectively in sub-zero conditions, reducing the need for frequent supplementary heating.
The Role of Insulation and Home Design
Even the most advanced heat pump will underperform in a poorly insulated home. Insulation, window quality, and airtightness significantly influence how well a system maintains desired temperatures. Larger homes with open layouts, high ceilings, or multiple stories require a strategic approach to airflow and temperature regulation.
Investing in weatherproofing, insulation upgrades, and sealing air leaks will enhance the performance of any heating system, including heat pumps.
Maintenance and Long-Term Efficiency
Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the long-term performance of a heat pump in a large home. This includes checking refrigerant levels, cleaning filters, inspecting ducts (if applicable), and ensuring that the outdoor unit remains unobstructed. Scheduled servicing helps avoid performance dips and preserves energy efficiency over time.
Owners who prioritize regular upkeep often enjoy lower operational costs and fewer breakdowns.
Environmental and Economic Benefits
One of the most compelling reasons to install a heat pump in a large home is its potential for environmental impact reduction. Since these systems operate on electricity and can be paired with renewable energy sources like solar panels, they support a cleaner, more sustainable home heating strategy.
Economically, the savings are also substantial. Though initial installation costs may be higher than traditional systems, the reduced monthly utility bills and potential tax credits or energy rebates make heat pumps a smart long-term investment.
Choosing the Right Installation Team
To fully reap the benefits of a heat pump system, professional installation is critical. Proper placement, ductwork configuration (if applicable), and system calibration all contribute to achieving peak performance. A correctly installed system will function at its intended efficiency, even in larger or more complex residential layouts.
Final Thoughts: A Smart Move for Large Homes
In conclusion, a heat pump can heat a large home efficiently — when selected, sized, and installed correctly. With advancements in technology, these systems now meet the demands of larger spaces without compromising performance or comfort. When combined with zoning strategies, quality insulation, and regular maintenance, they offer an efficient and eco-conscious alternative to traditional heating methods.
As heating needs evolve and sustainability becomes more central to home design, the heat pump continues to emerge as a forward-thinking solution for modern homeowners — even in the most expansive living spaces.

How to Choose the Right Size Heat Pump Mini Split for Your Space
Tumblr media
As energy efficiency becomes a top priority for homeowners and businesses, Heat Pumps Mini Split Systems are rapidly gaining popularity. These ductless systems offer year-round comfort, reduced energy bills, and the flexibility of zoned heating and cooling. However, one of the most critical factors in maximizing their performance is choosing the correct system size for your space.
Installing a mini split that’s too small will struggle to maintain the desired temperature, while an oversized system may short cycle, causing energy waste and uneven comfort. Here's a detailed guide to help you choose the right size Heat Pumps Mini Split Systems for your home or office.
1. Understand BTU Ratings
The cooling and heating capacity of Heat Pumps Mini Split Systems is measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units). The higher the BTU, the larger the space the unit can efficiently heat or cool.
Here’s a rough guide:
Up to 300 sq. ft. – 9,000 BTU
300–500 sq. ft. – 12,000 BTU
500–800 sq. ft. – 18,000 BTU
800–1,200 sq. ft. – 24,000 BTU
1,200–1,500+ sq. ft. – 30,000+ BTU (multi-zone recommended)
Keep in mind these are general estimates. Other factors like insulation, ceiling height, number of windows, and local climate also play a crucial role in sizing accurately.
2. Calculate Square Footage of the Space
To start, measure the length and width of the room and multiply to get the square footage. If you're installing a multi-zone system in multiple rooms or floors, calculate each zone separately. Open-plan areas or rooms with high ceilings may need additional capacity compared to standard enclosed rooms.
3. Factor in Room Conditions
Not all rooms are created equal. Consider the following conditions when choosing Heat Pumps Mini Split Systems:
Sun exposure: South-facing rooms with large windows may require higher BTU capacity.
Insulation quality: Poor insulation allows for heat loss, requiring more powerful systems.
Ceiling height: Rooms with ceilings higher than 8 feet often need additional BTU adjustment.
Appliances and electronics: Kitchens and rooms with multiple heat-generating devices may need higher capacity.
Occupancy: More people generate more heat. A crowded space may need a boost in capacity.
4. Choose Single-Zone vs Multi-Zone Systems
Single-zone systems are ideal for cooling or heating one specific room. However, for larger homes or multiple rooms, multi-zone Heat Pumps Mini Split Systems are the better option. These systems use a single outdoor unit connected to multiple indoor air handlers, allowing independent temperature control for each zone.
When choosing a multi-zone system, ensure the total BTU capacity of the outdoor unit can support the combined demand of all indoor units. This is where professional guidance becomes important.
5. Consult a Professional HVAC Installer
While BTU calculators and charts are helpful, the best way to ensure optimal sizing is to consult with a licensed HVAC contractor. They’ll perform a Manual J Load Calculation, which considers insulation, airflow, local climate, and other structural features to determine the exact requirements.
An improperly sized unit can lead to:
Reduced energy efficiency
Shortened system lifespan
Higher operating costs
Inconsistent temperatures
A professional installer can also help select energy-efficient models and recommend features like inverter compressors, Wi-Fi controls, or HEPA filters based on your needs.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the right size for Heat Pumps Mini Split Systems is a critical step toward achieving energy-efficient and consistent indoor comfort. It’s not just about square footage—insulation, layout, climate, and usage patterns all impact the correct sizing. Whether you're upgrading your HVAC system or installing one in a new space, taking the time to properly assess your needs ensures that you get the best performance, cost savings, and longevity from your investment. Before you buy, do your homework—or better yet, consult an expert—to find the ideal size and configuration for your space. A well-chosen mini split system will reward you with comfort, control, and energy efficiency for years to come.

Hidden Costs of Patio Enclosures That Homeowners Should Know
A patio enclosure sounds like a dream—extra living space, protection from the elements, and a cozy spot to enjoy your backyard without worrying about bugs or weather. But before you start imagining lazy afternoons in your enclosed patio, there’s something you need to know: hidden costs can sneak up fast.
Sure, you’ve budgeted for the materials and installation, but what about permits, electrical work, and long-term maintenance? These are the costs homeowners don’t always think about until it’s too late. Let’s break down the hidden expenses that come with patio enclosures—so you can plan ahead and avoid surprises.
1. Permit Fees and Inspection Costs
You know what’s worse than an unexpected fee? A fine for not getting the right permits. Many cities—including South Bend—require permits for enclosed patios, especially if they involve structural changes.
What to expect:
Building permits can range from $200 to $1,500, depending on your location and the scope of the project.
If electrical or plumbing work is involved, expect additional inspection fees.
Some HOAs (Homeowners Associations) have their own approval process, which may include extra costs.
How to avoid surprises: Before you start, check with your local municipality or ask your contractor if permit fees are included in their quote.
2. Foundation and Structural Modifications
You might assume your current patio is ready to go, but not all patios are built to support an enclosure. If the foundation is uneven, cracked, or not up to code, you could be looking at some serious prep work.
Possible added costs:
Leveling an uneven slab – $500 to $2,000
Reinforcing or replacing a weak foundation – $2,000 to $5,000
Extending an existing patio to fit the enclosure – $3,000+
How to avoid surprises: Have a contractor inspect your foundation first to see if it needs work before adding an enclosure.
3. Electrical Work and Lighting
If you’re planning to use your patio at night or in colder months, you’ll likely need lighting, ceiling fans, or even heating elements. That means hiring an electrician, which adds to your budget.
Potential electrical costs:
Basic wiring for lights and outlets – $500 to $1,500
Ceiling fan installation – $200 to $800
Electric heater installation – $300 to $1,500 (not including the heater itself)
How to avoid surprises: If you need electrical work, bundle it with your enclosure project—some contractors offer discounts for multiple services.
4. Hidden Costs of Windows and Screens
Not all glass and screens are created equal. Many homeowners go with the cheapest option upfront, only to realize later that they need better insulation or stronger materials.
Extra costs you might not expect:
Upgrading to insulated glass – Adds $1,000 to $5,000, but helps with energy efficiency.
Impact-resistant or pet-proof screens – Adds $300 to $1,500, but prevents tears and damage.
Tinted or UV-protected windows – Adds $500 to $2,000, but keeps the enclosure cooler in summer.
How to avoid surprises: If you plan to use your enclosure year-round, investing in quality materials upfront saves money on energy bills and repairs.
5. Heating and Cooling Costs
Ever sat inside a car on a hot summer day? A patio enclosure with poor ventilation or no insulation can feel the same way. Likewise, in winter, an unheated enclosure can be too cold to use.
Additional climate control expenses:
Portable heater or AC unit – $200 to $800
Ductless mini-split system – $2,000 to $5,000 (for heating & cooling)
Ceiling fans or exhaust vents – $200 to $1,500
How to avoid surprises: If your enclosure will be used year-round, factor in heating and cooling solutions before installation—it’s much cheaper than trying to fix it later.
6. Increased Home Insurance Premiums
Here’s something most homeowners don’t think about: your home insurance might go up after installing a patio enclosure. Some insurance providers classify enclosed patios as an addition, which can slightly increase premiums.
How much?
Small increases of $100 to $300 per year are common.
If the enclosure includes electrical work or expensive upgrades, expect higher coverage costs.
How to avoid surprises: Call your insurance provider before starting your project to see how an enclosure affects your policy.
7. Maintenance and Repairs Over Time
Like anything else in your home, a patio enclosure requires maintenance. Even high-quality materials will wear down over time, especially if exposed to harsh weather.
Long-term costs homeowners forget:
Screen repairs – $50 to $300 (for minor rips or damage)
Glass panel replacements – $200 to $800 per panel
Roof panel maintenance – $500 to $2,000 (for polycarbonate or glass roofing)
Sealing leaks or cracks – $100 to $500 per repair
How to avoid surprises: Ask your contractor about warranty coverage and long-term upkeep recommendations.
8. Cleaning and Upkeep Costs
Nobody thinks about cleaning until their beautiful glass enclosure gets covered in pollen, dirt, or streaks.
Cleaning costs:
Professional glass cleaning – $150 to $400 per visit
DIY cleaning supplies – $50 to $150 per year
Pressure washing screens and flooring – $100 to $300
How to avoid surprises: If your enclosure has large glass panels, consider self-cleaning glass coatings to cut down on maintenance.
How to Avoid Hidden Costs When Installing a Patio Enclosure
Now that you know what to watch for, here’s how to keep your project within budget:
Get an all-inclusive quote – Make sure your contractor lists every possible fee upfront.
Ask about warranties – A good warranty can save you thousands on future repairs.
Prioritize essential upgrades – If you’re on a budget, invest in structural quality first and add extras later.
Time your project wisely – Contractors often offer discounts in fall and winter when demand is lower.
Check financing options – Some companies offer payment plans to spread costs over time.
Final Thoughts
A patio enclosure is a fantastic investment—but only if you plan for the real cost, not just the sticker price. From permits and structural work to heating, cooling, and maintenance, understanding these hidden expenses upfrontwill save you stress, time, and money in the long run.
If you’re in South Bend or nearby, Screenmobile offers transparent pricing and expert guidance—so you get a high-quality patio enclosure without unexpected costs.
