Sterek dialogue for a new fic concept 🥰
Stiles: "Can I say something?"
Derek: "..." *quirks eyebrow*
Stiles: "What?"
Derek: "It's just- in the twelve years I've known you, you have never asked permission to say something."
Stiles: "Well, considering you're officially my boss now, I figured I'd try the whole 'politeness' thing."
Derek: "Stiles, you threw a slipper at me this morning, and I crashed your car when we were 17, I think we're past feigning politeness. And you've worked here since I started the company, I've always been your boss. You just refuse to acknowledge it."
Stiles: "...Fair"
[a pause]
Stiles: "Your employees- pack- aren't scared of you, you know?"
Derek: "What?"
Stiles: "They're not scared of you. It's actually the opposite. They respect you so much that they're terrified of disappointing you. And you're not making it easy for them."
Derek: "How do you mean?"
Stiles: "When was the last time you told them they were doing a good job? I mean, Isaac redesigned your entire website to fit what you wanted and you just grunted at him and gave him another task. The poor boy was exhausted."
Derek: "I don't grunt at people. And I did thank Isaac. You just weren't around to hear it."
Stiles: "Derek, you put a cookie on his desk and walked off."

Yep, still there (May 17, 2025)
After 573 days of no updates to the Mario history timeline, Super Mario Bros. Wonder has been added to the website on day 574. This puts it in 2nd place behind New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, which was added on day 602 after its launch. But why now?
I didn't do any documentation of the rest of Mario Dot Nintendo Dot Com, but luckily the most recent archive on the Wayback Machine is on May 8th, 2025. The first thing I noticed is that the Characters page has been updated with new renders. Check out that denim on the Super Mario Brothers!
Notably, the new Kong designs are also present, including the new Diddy Kong render shown off on the very same day the website was updated, May 15:
In fact, renders all across the website have been updated! Basically every appearance of Mario has that detailed moustache and those shiny metal buttons on his overalls (though some characters have had only subtler lighting changes, or even none I can distinguish). Since most of the poses are near-identical, it makes a great comparison.
It seems like they did a site-wide update to prepare for the Switch 2 launch, showing off the redesigns. One of those updated Mario renders appears on the Mario history page, so with that in mind it's not surprising that the timeline was updated along with it.
With that, I've said all I really wanted to say on the subject. Sorry to the 5 followers I've gained since making the "Yes" post, but I don't really think I'll be doing much with this blog in the near future. Maybe I'll post some jokes?
And of course, special thanks to jan Misali for creating the how many Super Mario games are there NOW? video that brought my attention to the website in the first place. (and for all their other great videos!)
#mario dot nintendo dot com slash history#The idea of continuing to post “yes it's still there” did cross my mind#but I think the joke would stop being funny to me pretty quickly

Antiusurpation and the road to disenshittification

THIS WEEKEND (November 8-10), I'll be in TUCSON, AZ: I'm the GUEST OF HONOR at the TUSCON SCIENCE FICTION CONVENTION.
Nineties kids had a good reason to be excited about the internet's promise of disintermediation: the gatekeepers who controlled our access to culture, politics, and opportunity were crooked as hell, and besides, they sucked.
For a second there, we really did get a lot of disintermediation, which created a big, weird, diverse pluralistic space for all kinds of voices, ideas, identities, hobbies, businesses and movements. Lots of these were either deeply objectionable or really stupid, or both, but there was also so much cool stuff on the old, good internet.
Then, after about ten seconds of sheer joy, we got all-new gatekeepers, who were at least as bad, and even more powerful, than the old ones. The net became Tom Eastman's "Five giant websites, each filled with screenshots of the other four." Culture, politics, finance, news, and especially power have been gathered into the hands of unaccountable, greedy, and often cruel intermediaries.
Oh, also, we had an election.
This isn't an election post. I have many thoughts about the election, but they're still these big, unformed blobs of anger, fear and sorrow. Experience teaches me that the only way to get past this is to just let all that bad stuff sit for a while and offgas its most noxious compounds, so that I can handle it safely and figure out what to do with it.
While I wait that out, I'm just getting the job done. Chop wood, carry water. I've got a book to write, Enshittification, for Farar, Straus, Giroux's MCD Books, and it's very nearly done:
https://twitter.com/search?q=from%3Adoctorow+%23dailywords&src=typed_query&f=live
Compartmentalizing my anxieties and plowing that energy into productive work isn't necessarily the healthiest coping strategy, but it's not the worst, either. It's how I wrote nine books during the covid lockdowns.
And sometimes, when you're not staring directly at something, you get past the tunnel vision that makes it impossible to see its edges, fracture lines, and weak points.
So I'm working on the book. It's a book about platforms, because enshittification is a phenomenon that is most visible and toxic on platforms. Platforms are intermediaries, who connect buyers and sellers, creators and audiences, workers and employers, politicians and voters, activists and crowds, as well as families, communities, and would-be romantic partners.
There's a reason we keep reinventing these intermediaries: they're useful. Like, it's technically possible for a writer to also be their own editor, printer, distributor, promoter and sales-force:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/02/19/crad-kilodney-was-an-outlier/#intermediation
But without middlemen, those are the only writers we'll get. The set of all writers who have something to say that I want to read is much larger than the set of all writers who are capable of running their own publishing operation.
The problem isn't middlemen: the problem is powerful middlemen. When an intermediary gets powerful enough to usurp the relationship between the parties on either side of the transaction, everything turns to shit:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/06/12/direct-the-problem-of-middlemen/
A dating service that faces pressure from competition, regulation, interoperability and a committed workforce will try as hard as it can to help you find Your Person. A dating service that buys up all its competitors, cows its workforce, captures its regulators and harnesses IP law to block interoperators will redesign its service so that you keep paying forever, and never find love:
https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2024/02/13/1228749143/the-dating-app-paradox-why-dating-apps-may-be-worse-than-ever
Multiply this a millionfold, in every sector of our complex, high-tech world where we necessarily rely on skilled intermediaries to handle technical aspects of our lives that we can't – or shouldn't – manage ourselves. That world is beholden to predators who screw us and screw us and screw us, jacking up our rents:
https://www.thebignewsletter.com/p/yes-there-are-antitrust-voters-in
Cranking up the price of food:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/10/04/dont-let-your-meat-loaf/#meaty-beaty-big-and-bouncy
And everything else:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/11/06/attention-rents/#consumer-welfare-queens
(Maybe this is a post about the election after all?)
The difference between a helpmeet and a parasite is power. If we want to enjoy the benefits of intermediaries without the risks, we need policies that keep middlemen weak. That's the opposite of the system we have now.
Take interoperability and IP law. Interoperability (basically, plugging new things into existing things) is a really powerful check against powerful middlemen. If you rely on an ad-exchange to fund your newsgathering and they start ripping you off, then an interoperable system that lets you use a different exchange will not only end the rip off – it'll make it less likely to happen in the first place because the ad-tech platform will be afraid of losing your business:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2023/05/save-news-we-must-shatter-ad-tech
Interoperability means that when a printer company gouges you on ink, you can buy cheap third party ink cartridges and escape their grasp forever:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/11/ink-stained-wretches-battle-soul-digital-freedom-taking-place-inside-your-printer
Interoperability means that when Amazon rips off audiobook authors to the tune of $100m, those authors can pull their books from Amazon and sell them elsewhere and know that their listeners can move their libraries over to a different app:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/09/07/audible-exclusive/#audiblegate
But interoperability has been in retreat for 40 years, as IP law has expanded to criminalize otherwise normal activities, so that middlemen can use IP rights to protect themselves from their end-users and business customers:
https://locusmag.com/2020/09/cory-doctorow-ip/
That's what I mean when I say that "IP" is "any law that lets a business reach beyond its own walls and control the actions of its customers, competitors and critics."
For example, there's a pernicious law 1998 US law that I write about all the time, Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the "anticircumvention law." This is a law that felonizes tampering with copyright locks, even if you are the creator of the undelying work.
So Amazon – the owner of the monopoly audiobook platform Audible – puts a mandatory copyright lock around every audiobook they sell. I, as an author who writes, finances and narrates the audiobook, can't provide you, my customer, with a tool to remove that lock. If I do so, I face criminal sanctions: a five year prison sentence and a $500,000 fine for a first offense:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/07/25/can-you-hear-me-now/#acx-ripoff
In other words: if I let you take my own copyrighted work out of Amazon's app, I commit a felony, with penalties that are far stiffer than the penalties you would face if you were to simply pirate that audiobook. The penalties for you shoplifting the audiobook on CD at a truck-stop are lower than the penalties the author and publisher of the book would face if they simply gave you a tool to de-Amazon the file. Indeed, even if you hijacked the truck that delivered the CDs, you'd probably be looking at a shorter sentence.
This is a law that is purpose-built to encourage intermediaries to usurp the relationship between buyers and sellers, creators and audiences. It's a charter for parasitism and predation.
But as bad as that is, there's another aspect of DMCA 1201 that's even worse: the exemptions process.
You might have read recently about the Copyright Office "freeing the McFlurry" by granting a DMCA 1201 exemption for companies that want to reverse-engineer the error-codes from McDonald's finicky, unreliable frozen custard machines:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/10/28/mcbroken/#my-milkshake-brings-all-the-lawyers-to-the-yard
Under DMCA 1201, the Copyright Office hears petitions for these exemptions every three years. If they judge that anticircumvention law is interfering with some legitimate activity, the statute empowers them to grant an exemption.
When the DMCA passed in 1998 (and when the US Trade Rep pressured other world governments into passing nearly identical laws in the decades that followed), this exemptions process was billed as a "pressure valve" that would prevent abuses of anticircumvention law.
But this was a cynical trick. The way the law is structured, the Copyright Office can only grant "use" exemptions, but not "tools" exemptions. So if you are granted the right to move Audible audiobooks into a third-party app, you are personally required to figure out how to do that. You have to dump the machine code of the Audible app, decompile it, scan it for vulnerabilities, and bootstrap your own jailbreaking program to take Audible wrapper off the file.
No one is allowed to help you with this. You aren't allowed to discuss any of this publicly, or share a tool that you make with anyone else. Doing any of this is a potential felony.
In other words, DMCA 1201 gives intermediaries power over you, but bans you from asking an intermediary to help you escape another abusive middleman.
This is the exact opposite of how intermediary law should work. We should have rules that ban intermediaries from exercising undue power over the parties they serve, and we should have rules empowering intermediaries to erode the advantage of powerful intermediaries.
The fact that the Copyright Office grants you an exemption to anticircumvention law means nothing unless you can delegate that right to an intermediary who can exercise it on your behalf.
A world without publishing intermediaries is one in which the only writers who thrive are the ones capable of being publishers, too, and that's a tiny fraction of all the writers with something to say.
A world without interoperability intermediaries is one in which the only platform users who thrive are also skilled reverse-engineering ninja hackers – and that's an infinitesimal fraction of the platform users who would benefit from interoperabilty.
Let this be your north star in evaluating platform regulation proposals. Platform regulation should weaken intermediaries' powers over their users, and strengthen their power over other middlemen.
Put in this light, it's easy to see why the ill-informed calls to abolish Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (which makes platform users, not platforms, responsible for most unlawful speech) are so misguided:
https://www.techdirt.com/2020/06/23/hello-youve-been-referred-here-because-youre-wrong-about-section-230-communications-decency-act/
If we require platforms to surveil all user speech and block anything that might violate any law, we give the largest, most powerful platforms a permanent advantage over smaller, better platforms, run by co-ops, hobbyists, nonprofits local governments, and startups. The big platforms have the capital to rig up massive, automated surveillance and censorship systems, and the only alternatives that can spring up have to be just as big and powerful as the Big Tech platforms we're so desperate to escape:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/03/23/evacuate-the-platforms/#let-the-platforms-burn
This is especially grave given the current political current, where fascist politicians are threatening platforms with brutal punishments for failing to censor disfavored political views.
Anyone who tells you that "it's only censorship when the government does it" is badly confused. It's only a First Amendment violation when the government does it, sure – but censorship has always relied on intermediaries. From the Inquisition to the Comics Code, government censors were only able to do their jobs because powerful middlemen, fearing state punishments, blocked anything that might cross the line, censoring far beyond the material actually prohibited by the law:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/02/22/self-censorship/#hugos
We live in a world of powerful, corrupt middlemen. From payments to real-estate, from job-search to romance, there's a legion of parasites masquerading as helpmeets, burying their greedy mouthparts into our tender flesh:
https://www.capitalisnt.com/episodes/visas-hidden-tax-on-americans
But intermediaries aren't the problem. You shouldn't have to stand up your own payment processor, or learn the ins and outs of real-estate law, or start your own single's bar. The problem is power, not intermediation.
As we set out to build a new, good internet (with a lot less help from the US government than seemed likely as recently as last week), let's remember that lesson: the point isn't disintermediation, it's weak intermediation.
If you'd like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here's a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:

Is Pancakes new design going to be in the comic? and how will that work? cause she has her old design in the newest comic. just wondering.
I've been redrawing the comic with the updated designs. I've been posting those pages on my Breakfast discord until I can finish the chapter and upload it to the website. It's been taking a while since I'm working on another really big project (and commissions and building rigs, and also because I have been sick almost every week since the year started).
Since every main character got a redesign (ranging from total overhaul to minor colour palette changes) I'm rebuilding my breakfast rigs. This may or may not have anything to do with the really big project I mentioned before.

Hello Tumblr! I am posting this on behalf of the Queer Liberation Library, who don't yet have a Tumblr, but have promised me they're working on it. Some of you may remember them from the Twitter Poll I was involved in a few months ago where Hunger Pangs: True Love Bites beat multiple award-winning, trad-pub queer authors with a hefty 69% (nice).
For those of you unaware, the Queer Liberation Library, or QLL, is an organization fighting to build a vibrant, flourishing queer future by connecting LGBTQ+ people with literature, information, and resources that celebrate the unique and empowering diversity of our community.
And today, June 12th, 2023, they launched their fundraiser to try and reach 15k so that they can start purchasing digital licensing for queer media and hopefully open their digital doors to library patrons across the US in 2023 with as many queer and trans books as possible.
You can check out their newly redesigned website here:
(If you are in an unsafe space and need to exit the webpage quickly, there is a quick exit bar at the top that redirects to a weather page. When I spoke to them about their web design they were also open to accessibility suggestions and are potentially working on a dark mode for those of us who need it.)
If you know me, you know I am unequivocally pro-library, both as a reader and a queer writer. But with the current rise of homophobia, transphobia, and the proposed ban on books taking hold in certain States, the importance of having protected access queer books cannot be over-emphasized enough.
The QLL aims to protect that access, aiming to provide FREE access to queer and trans media (ebook and audio) to patrons regardless of location within the United States.
They are funded entirely through regular donations from their supporters and their now annual Pride fundraiser, where they hope to afford the cost of not just library books but also maintaining their web presence and staff.
I cannot emphasize enough how much this project is a labor of love for everyone involved and its importance.
And just to clarify, I am not involved in any way beyond raising awareness. When QLL reached out and asked me to retweet their fundraiser tweets, I readily agreed and offered to post about it on Tumblr because I believe in their mission and the world they are trying to build.
One where queer and trans books can't be banned or taken off of shelves because of bigotry and hatred.
If you would like to donate to the cause, you can do so here:
They've already surpassed their first 2k, and it'd be absolutely wonderful if we could help them reach their next milestone. And if you can't give, please consider signal boosting this post.

Project SEKAI: the Movie -Ruined SEKAI and the Miku Who Can't Sing- recap post
The previously teased "new project" was officially announced earlier today! We're going to be getting a Project SEKAI movie, which is slated for release on January 17th, 2025!! The main poster can be seen above.
This post will be summarising what we know, and will be updated when more information is given.
youtube
As mentioned already, the movie will be released next January in cinemas in Japan. It will be animated by P.A.WORKS, who animated the Journery to Bloom shorts. The first trailer for the movie is embedded above. Clips from the movie will be shown in cinemas in Japan starting in August, and these will later be made available on Youtube.

An international release was confirmed in the July Colorful Corner livestream, though no date has been given. It will be some point after the Japanese release.
A synopsis was also released, and a translated version can be found here. To summarise, Ichika meets a Miku she doesn't recognise, who appears to be rather sad and lonely. This Miku tells Ichika that there are people she wants to sing to, but she is unable to reach them, and she wants to get to know Ichika because she sees how Ichika is able to reach people's hearts with her singing.
Based on the costumes used in the movie being from before the 3rd anniversary, this movie is likely set then. However, it could be a noncanon original story (like the anthology manga) or it could be canon to the game and link up to the current story, and the outfits could be down to the fact that this movie would've gone into production long before the 3rd anniversary redesigns were created.
A character sheet for the new Miku was also posted on the movie's website earlier today.
The movie will also feature new songs, though more information on these will be released at a later date.
The official website can be found here, and the official twitter account is @/pjsekai_movie.
The next load of information about the movie will be given during the 4th anniversary thanksgiving festival (unless the cinema clips make it first). There will be more information about the songs in December.

Reigen asks you for help (Reigen Arataka x gn!reader)
Reigen is your annoying employer but you've become closer recently. Seems like he needs your help with 'Spirits and Such' official website.

You've been Reigen's employee for a while already. It's not like you treated him as your real 'boss', more like a dumb friend, but you still had to help him a lot
You were a real psychic and you had to work with spirits when Mob were at school or something. You knew that Reigen has no psychic powers and always mocked him
Now Reigen has a bad reputation as a 'fake psychic' and you don't have any clients. Seeing him being so desperate made you feel kinda sad
One late evening Reigen was struggling to redesign the website and you were trying to sleep on the desk sitting next to him
'You promised to help me! Why are you fooling around? What do I pay you for?...', he suddenly complained while poking your shoulder. You raised you tired head to look at his face
'You said I don't have any taste, so maybe you should deal with it yourself', you yawned and rubbed your eyes before putting your head back on the desk.
Reigen looks at you with the most dramatic expression and then turns back to the laptop screen
In a few minutes he says, 'Okay, I'm sorry... But really... Help me.'
Now you smile teasingly, 'So, my taste isn't that bad?'
He ignores the question and shows you the main page of the website on his laptop, 'What do you think about the colors? I believe people are attracted to bright features, right?'
'Bright colors look cheap', you move your chair closer to his to take the mouse and click on the option you like more
'Maybe you're right', he sighs hopelessly
'Why did you even decide to change the website? You have nothing to do?', you ask seriously now
'Huh? Me? Nothing to do?', he says in the most offended tone and laughs, ' Oh, please. I'm the greatest psychic of the 21st century! I am incredibly busy all the time'
'Where are our clients then?', you ask with a smirk on your face. The office actually looks as empty as a desert
'Aah... That...', he's desperately trying to find and excuse but he just nods, 'Fine... You win.'
You sigh. Kinda feel sympathetic to him. 'Okay, I'll help you. The thing is I hate seeing you sad more than the fact you're annoying'
'Do you care about me?', he asks teasingly but his heart starts beating faster for some reason
'Well, my salary depends on it as well', you add as an excuse with a hint of emberassment because of his question
'Yeah! As my employee you better help me!'
Despite being the one in charge, Reigen actually likes almost all your suggestions
Just to maintain some kind of authority he critizes some of your ideas and offers some of his own
But... he can feel how close you are. You're almost leaning over him when you're trying to use the laptop. It kinda makes it hard for him to focus on website
In a couple of hours you've finally finished
'It looks great, doesn't it?', he asks with an excitement, 'You have a real talent for this kind of stuff, you know.'
'Huh, well, the talents costs some money, you know', you answer teasingly
He rolls his eyes and looks at you like he's judging, 'How much do you want?'
'Just kidding', you smile softly, 'I don't need your money. Consider I've just helped a friend.'
'But I'm not always this nice', you add and wink
Hearing you refer him as a friend feels oddly nice. He shakes off this feeling and decides to tease you back
'Oh, really? I was ready to pay a hefty sum but if you say so...', he acts like he's the most generous person in the world right now
You smirk with an interest, 'Oh, well, I mean, I wouldn't mind... How much, by the way?'
'A million yen', he says full of confidence.
'Oh, stop. I know you don't have a million yen. Even if you had you wouldn't pay me this much for the website redesign', you say stubbornly and tap his forehead
He knew you were just messing around but... you were still so close and you had that smile on your face and those eyes and... damn
'Hey', Reigen says with some kind of determination, 'What about some tokoyaki then? My treat'
'Are you asking me on a date?'
'Maybe. Does it work?'
'Definetely'

Local big sister experiences emotions, more at 6
Been wanting to do one of these with Lauren for AGES, but I never got round to it. Then I saw the Lydia and Phinium expression sheets on @littledigits’ website and I felt inspiration like never before.
The funniest struggle I have with Lauren’s design right now is that she nose too big for she got damn face. Literally, Hilda characters noses take up a fairly small portion of their faces, and her’s took up WAY too much, leaving little room for her to make facial expressions. But I struggled to find a fix because when I made the nose smaller it just didn’t look like Lauren anymore, so I took this as an opportunity to work on that!
She still has a larger nose than most characters, starting higher up (like her grandad!) and ending lower down (but not quite as low as before). I also made her eyes a little smaller and with a shape similar to Lydia’s (though you can see in some of these I hadn’t quite landed on that yet and her eyes are a bit too big), which works both as a nod to her parentage and because I think it makes the nose look bigger. This still doesn’t leave as much room for the mouth as most other characters, but that’s okay — Lauren is a very private person who keeps her feelings close to her chest, I think it works for her to have subtler expressions, adds to how guarded she is! Oh and I also updated the shape of her hair slightly, just to make it a bit more style accurate.

These changes are pretty small on their own, but I think combined they work well to make Lauren feel a lot more…alive? Far less stiff, anyway. I think she also has a more unique facial structure now, instead of just “what if Johanna was 90% nose”. She’s still got a big old nose and I love it but now she can emote, yay!
This is really all just concept stuff, I’m hoping to get a new fullbody style-ref for Lauren out soon! Now that I’ve improved the main issues I had with her face in the last ref, now it’s onto the silhouette! I want her to read as more of a strong character (though it comes across decently in her current ref, I wanna push it more without being as exaggerated as Ahlberg, which is. A challenge for me lol), streamline her silhouette, and finally make her taller than Johanna like she’s always meant to have been <3 I made her shorter for so long because I thought it would help her read better as her daughter but you know what? That’s dumb actually, she’s tall.
ANYWAYS, thank you for listening in on the annual Lauren redesign, and to the artists behind the show for posting so much amazing inspiring show stopping concept work for free because it makes my autism worse /pos
