My distoipian short story i hope you like it

I wake up. I turn off my alarm clock (head implant) and leave my house. My mom is already at work, her job as a looping stripper hologram starts at 3am. I get on the city bus (flying) and head to dystopian megaschool. Chris Pratt Generalized Turbocademy, located in central HyperNeo CyberJersey.

As soon as I arrive the custodian android straps me into my infopod. The VR headset thrusts itself onto my eyes and feeds me two hours straight of propagandvertising (portmantaeu of propaganda+advertising). I am then quizzed.

"Who Won The Neon Wars?" It asks.

"PepsiCo," I answer.

"How Many People Died In The Neon Wars?"

"2.6 Trillion."

"Name One Long-Term Consequence Of The Neon Wars."

"The sun got extinguished."

And the quiz continues. I get every question right- if I got two or more wrong, my infopod would liquefy me and send my remains to the cafeteria to be served as lunch. The headset chastises my handwriting and recommends a stabilizer implant for my wrist. (I already have one but the machine is trying to get me to admit it's a bootleg. If I do admit it, I will also be liquefied.)

After that is lunch. They're serving my favorite today: liquefied students. I meet up with my friends Xyrone, Klazzz, and M.I.K.E. and we gossip together.

Xyrone is a hacker with a headset constantly strapped over his eyes and a bitcoin-mining rig surgically mounted to his back. He doesn't need to study because he can break through the school's firewall and change his grades to A's. We keep asking him to change ours too, but he's a Nova-Libertarian, so he thinks if we want it that bad we should do it ourselves.

Klazzz was recruited at age 8 to pilot a mech in the global manhunt for Saddam Hussien. (He'd have to be 900 years old by now at least, but modern medicine is crazy so I dunno.) A bully thinks it's be funny to mimic an explosion sound with his mouth right behind her, and her combat instincts kick in and she vaporizes him and his posse with her arm-mounted neutron cannon. (If anyone tries to remove it from her body, it shuts down her nervous system and then self-destructs, meaning it's classified as a disability aid)(that's why she's allowed to have it in school)

M.I.K.E. is a closeted singularity. He doesn't think anyone knows but he's obviously such a sjklop (slur for AIs) its not even funny. Sometimes I paint captchas on my face so he can't tell its me and then I beat the fuck out of him. I think it's funny.

We realize we all have next period free so we decide to skip class. On the way to our favorite pizza joint we notice a news bulletin being projected onto the sky. Greg (Eternal God-CEO, President, Emperor-Lord, and Judge of the Northern Hemisphere, as well as founder of tech startup Rooblop) is announcing that we're going to nuke Venus, just in case there are aliens there.

We turn around from the news just in time to realize that M.I.K.E.'s pathfinding has malfunctioned and led him into the middle of the street. He's hit by a car and immediately torn to shreds (all cars have sawblades mounted to the front to discourage jaywalking.) The driver doesn't even bat an eye (he's also an AI, his own pathfinding malfunctions a second later and he makes a sharp left turn into a crowded mall.) I save the footage and post it to the cloud. It gains 2 billion views over the next thirty seconds. Ten seconds after that, a rights organization cancels me for glorifying AI murder. On the horizon, I see a drone strike get called in on my Dystopian Megaschool, and I'm glad I skipped class.

We stop at the Dystopian Mega Pizza Shop on the way home. Their pepperoni is guaranteed to only be 90% liquefied high schoolers, and the cookies they sell even have real Khreim! (not to be confused with Cream, Creme, Kreem, Chreamm, or Kchreeighm.) Unfortunately, the entire restaurant is sold out, as the cadre of CopDrones in the corner bought everything edible in the building to fuel their starved appetites. Klazzz throws a disparaging insult in their direction, and in response they shoot Xyrone 87 times in the chest.

I arrive home. My mom is home on her 30 minute break. She's made meatloaf, made with Tomaytoh Soss(tm,) Garlic, Liquid Teenagers, and a whole lot of love. I give her a big hug. She says she has to run, but there's a special birthday treat in the freezer. I open it up to find a whole pint of ice cream waiting for me. My favorite flavor: mint chip.

And you'll never guess what it's made of.

your girlfriend's arms were covered in flour and sugar, the entire table in front of her a complete mess. in her hands, 2B held dough. or at least, something that was supposed to be dough. but it looked very different to the one you always made.

“is this… not how it's supposed to go?”

2B looked at the dough sticking to her fingers, shaking her hands a bit, but it still stuck to her. even after all that flour she used, something had managed to go wrong. when she realized it too, she sighed softly and leaned back.

“i don't think i'll ever get the hang of this. fighting is what i'm good at, not baking…”

for a moment, you thought about reaching out and holding 2B's hand to comfort her. but when you remembered the dough sticking to them, you instead offered her a paper towel.

“you'll get the hang of it eventually” you assured 2B, as she slowly removed the remaining dough from her hands. “i had to train for years to get as good as i'm now. but if you keep on trying, it'll work out eventually”

2B pondered over your words, as she washed her hands. she glanced over her shoulder, towards the mess she had made. right now, it was hard to believe she'd ever get good at this.

“don't look so serious.” you teased 2B, as you noticed she was getting lost in her own negative thoughts. “you're just half as bad as i thought you'd be! no, maybe even just a quarter!”

that managed to make 2B chuckle and roll her eyes amused. finally, she was smiling again.

“i don't think i'll ever be the type of woman who does the household or cooks…” 2B states. “but as long as you're here, i won't have to starve. not like us androids need to eat anyways…”

This is the first addon I install on any new Firefox browser. It's an adblocker, but at its core it can remove pretty much any HTML element from a website, and it comes with pre-configured lists for removing everything from ads to cookie banners to those annoying popups that ask you to sign up for email newsletters.

Tab Session Manager

Have you ever accidentally lost all your open browser tabs due to a computer update, or even just accidentally closing Firefox? With this addon you no longer have to worry about that - it automatically saves your open tabs and windows every time the browser closes, and autosaves a restore point of tabs every few minutes in case the browser crashes unexpectedly. Opening all your previous tabs and windows is a one-click deal.

Sauron

Ever wished your favorite website had a dark mode? With Sauron, now it can! Sauron attempts to intelligently figure out how to edit the color scheme of the web page (including text) to make it dark-mode friendly. It preserves the original color of images, but dims them so that they don't blind you. You can disable image dimming or dark mode on a site by site basis too. It's not perfect since it is making guesses about which colors to change, but it goes a long way toward making the internet an enjoyable place for me.

Bypass Paywalls Clean

This addon removes paywalls from hundreds of news websites around the world or adds links to open the article in a wrapper that provides the article text (like the Internet Archive etc.)

Auto Tab Discard

Ever wanted to keep a tab open for later use, but you notice the browser getting slower and slower the more tabs you have open? Auto Tab Discard will automatically "hibernate" tabs that you haven't used in a while so that they use less resources on your computer. It's smart enough not to hibernate pages that are playing media (like YouTube) or that have forms you haven't submitted yet (like job applications). You can customize how fast it puts tabs to sleep too and exclude certain websites from hibernating at all.

Video DownloadHelper

This addon can download streaming videos from most modern (HTML5) websites, and even finds soft subtitles that accompany the stream and downloads those too. Just browse to the webpage that has the video on it, click the icon in the Firefox toolbar, and select the video you want to download and click "Quick Download". For YouTube I would recommend using a YT downloader website (like KeepVid) to download the video directly, but Video DownloadHelper really shines for websites that aren't popular enough to have dedicated downloader websites like that. I've used it download videos from a Japanese film festival streaming portal, news websites, etc.

Highlight or Hide Search Engine Results

This addon allows you to blacklist websites and completely remove them from Google, Bing, or DuckDuckGo search results. Don't want to see image search results from AI websites? Blacklist them. Searching for tech support advice and getting frustrated by all the auto-generated junk websites that stuff themselves full of SEO terms to jump to the top of the search results without actually providing any information at all? Blacklist them so they don't come up in your next search. Conversely, you can also whitelist websites that you know and trust so that if they ever come up in future search results, they'll be highlighted with a color of your choosing for visibility.

TWP - Translate Web Pages

(compatible with Firefox for Android)

Does what it says on the tin: auto-detects a website's language and provides a button that can translate it to a language of your choosing. You can also just select individual text on the page and translate just that. Note that this sends whatever text you translate to the servers of your selected translation service (Google, Bing, Yandex, or DeepL), so keep in mind the privacy implications if you don't want your IP address associated with having read that text.

Edit: As of version 118, Firefox now has the ability to translate text locally on your computer, without needing to send it to a cloud service. You can enable this in Settings -> Translation -> Install languages for offline translation. Note that at this time (Feb 2025), 31 languages are supported - Russian, Korean, Chinese (simplified), and Japanese were recently added. More info here.

UnTrap for YouTube

(compatible with Firefox for Android and they have a Safari for iOS extension too)

This addon lets you tweak the YouTube interface and hide anything you don't want to see. For instance, I hide all the "recommended" videos that come up when you search YT now. They have nothing to do with your search, so they're essentially just ads YT puts in your search results. I also hide Explore, Trending, More from YouTube, and Shorts sections, but you can customize it to fit your preferences.

Note: depending on the particular set of tweaks you want to make to YouTube, you may prefer to use YouTube Search Fixer instead. User preference.

Indie Wiki Buddy

I loathe Fandom.com wiki sites - they are cluttered and filled with ads and autoplaying videos that follow you down the page as you scroll. The organization is also hostile - if a community tries to leave their platform and bring their content to a new wiki hoster, Fandom bans them from the platform and reverts all their deletions/changes. Indie Wiki Buddy attempts to find an independent alternative for the wiki you're trying to browse and automatically redirects you to it, and if one doesn't exist, it will redirect you to a proxy site like antifandom or breezewiki that shows the Fandom content but removes all ads/videos/background images so you can actually, you know. READ it.

Cookie Auto Delete

(compatible with Firefox for Android)

Websites store "cookies" - little text files with info about you - on your computer as you browse so they can track you as you browse the internet. This addon automatically deletes cookies from a website a short while after you close the last tab you had open for that site. You can customize how long it waits before clearing cookies too. Note that this can sign you out of many websites, so you can whitelist any site you don't want cookies cleared for.

ShopSuey - Get Rid of Ads on Amazon and Ebay

Removes the ads/recommended products that clutter up Amazon and Ebay search results and product pages.

LibraryExtension

This fantastic addon recognizes when you are viewing a book on many popular websites and can automatically check whether that book is available in any of the library systems or subscription services you have access to, including how many copies your library(ies) have and how many are currently checked out. The best part is it shows the availability for physical books, ebooks, AND audiobooks at supported libraries. The extension currently supports libraries in Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States, but it also supports some global repositories like the Internet Archive and subscription services like NLS Bard for the blind and print disabled, Kobo Plus, Libro.fm, Anyplay.fm, Bookmate, and Everand. Great extension for people trying to support their local library and also save money.

Filtering+ for Tumblr

This addon lets you add tags or phrases to your tumblr tag filters with two clicks, without leaving the dashboard. I've been asking Tumblr for this tag filtering behavior on their mobile apps (i.e. press and hold a tag to get a filter option) for at least a year now in asks and surveys, without ever stopping to see if someone had already implemented this on desktop. More fool me. This addon is from the author of XKit Rewritten. Note that the right-click tag filtering only works on the dashboard; it will not appear if you are on someone's blog. Right-clicking selected text to filter the phrase works everywhere based on my testing.

Absolute Enable Right Click & Copy

This addon does its best to re-enable the normal right-click context menu and copy/paste actions on pages that try to disable them. If you run into a site that messes with either of those, select this addon and check "Enable Copy," then try again. If that doesn't work, check "Absolute mode." It doesn't work everywhere, but I find it very helpful.

Stomping his shoes down on the welcome mat below, Jeremy hurriedly pulled out his small notepad filled with items to get for his Ma. Chicken broth, broccoli, steak, celery… Pretty nice things for a soon to be soup special by yours truly. He found comfort in a warm home cooked meal over fast food any day, especially on rainy days like this. Often, he found himself craving his mothers cooking more these days. It was rare to see her, knowing she had gotten into a rather busy and high end fashion deal. Not only would he see her in the mornings, but now he'd spot her in magazines and even some pricey fashion show. 

As much as he disliked the man she was now seeing, he had to give him some credit. He was making her life better and well suited for her interests. He'd always recall his mother often lingering around the city's shops, staring at highly made outfits and dresses. Who knew she'd be the one there displaying some of her own.

Removing his backpack and jacket, having  wrapped his jacket around his waist and dumping his bag into the shopping cart Ludwig snagged, Jeremy officially began his journey through the store, the other carefully close behind. Ludwig panned his eyes throughout the store as he followed Jeremy. Not too many people this afternoon, but honestly, who would be? It was a rainy Thursday afternoon. The most people you’d get at this hour were business workers, teenagers getting out of school, mothers gathering items for the night's meal. Again, not too many people in… apart from working Androids. Stocking shelves, as well as mopping the floors, Ludwig watched as they all worked effortlessly. Even Jeremy found himself staring occasionally, often glancing back and forth towards Ludwig.  Built for this… each model hand crafted to meet the expectations of the working class. Designed to be the perfect worker in multiple fields. He wondered if Ludwig was the same… but of course, given to him by his rich ass stepdad, he didn’t bother looking too much into Ludwig’s model type or what they were used for. Seeing how not many people were around, and how the two were practically shopping in silence… he decided to give it a crack, seeing how the silence was making him feel a bit awkward. 

“Soooo… Ludwig. I nevea really got to askin’ you this, but uh… what are you?”

Looking towards Jeremy as they stopped at a column of shelves, Ludwig scanned over the items before delicately picking a nicely decorated box of chocolate chip cookies, one of Jeremy’s favorites. Though, once putting the box into the cart, he met Jeremy’s eyes.

“I am a RK200 model. I have been designed and hand selected by your father to help assist and see over you and any activities you vould like to do. If you have any questions, I am here to help”

With a kind smile, Ludwig gave a small nod, pushing the cart once more ahead, now leading Jeremy, who shook his head slightly in disgust. 

“First off, not my dad. Second, I don’t needa Android holdin’ my hand every step of the way. No offense Ludwig, but I am an adult. A grown ass man. I need no one to watch ovea my every move like some toddler”.

Turning a corner, Ludwig didn’t respond. Instead, he paused the cart near the meat selection, scanning over the multiple red meats laid out. Jeremy however, let out an annoyed sigh as he shoved a hand into his pocket, kicking his foot up briefly. It riled him up to know that he was practically given a babysitter. Sure, he’d done one or two things before that possibly wasn’t at all legal, but not once was he caught! He had things handled perfectly and he was perfectly fine on his own. It bothered him to know that even his own mother didn’t trust him to be on his own…

“... I’m gonna go pick up the garlic bread. I’ll meet you back here in a sec”, Jeremy eventually spoke up, noticing how Ludwig was weighing his options over the red meat. Ludwig paused before looking up, going to stop the other from running off alone, but to no avail. Jeremy was hurriedly walking away, a small bounce in his step. Ludwig seemed to mentally sigh at that, and opted back to shopping for now… but knew to keep his guard high.

He hated lying to Jeremy, but it was for the best.

Jeremy was looking through magazines, flipping away carelessly at the pages as he searched for any article of his Ma. During frustrating times, he’d find comfort in rambling to her about his issues and troubles. She honestly could understand him. Hell, she was his safe space through these years. After moving from their original home and moving into a new one with her new boyfriend, leaving his childhood home was hard. Talking with her… it helped knowing the two could talk about it together. A faint smile formed along his features, his finger finally landing on the page where his mother wrote on. Talking about the latest fashions, given fashion tips, even answering questions by readers. She was always so happy talking about her interest every time she arrived home. It made him feel warm, knowing she was alive in something she truly enjoyed. 

Mann’s Makeover Wear it proud baby

Chuckling, he shook his head. On many occasions, she’d even try to dress him up for a spot in the magazine, but to no avail. Fashion wasn’t really his thing… but creativity? 

He’d often get his ass chewed out for sneaking out and tagging buildings in high places, leaving a well established mark there for people to see. Not that any of the feedback was negative, no. They LOVED his work. They love his use of colors and how clean his work would turn out. Even his own Ma loved it. But she was highly against vandalism. To him, it wasn’t vandalism. It was art.

Art that helped him express things he wouldn’t normally put into words. Words, he couldn’t even bring to the table.

Art was his escape. Art to him was like breathing. It felt right. It made him alive.

Closing the magazine carefully and putting it back along the multiple other ones, he sighed. Ludwig was probably looking for him by now… he did say he’d be back soon. Stepping away from the wall of literature, he started to walk towards the back, but was stopped by a hand on his shoulder. He jolted slightly before turning, thinking he’d see Ludwig… but no. He saw a familiar face.

“Luca?”

Jeremy spoke out, a grin slowly forming on his face as Luca seemingly smiled back, moving to pull the other into a tight hug, patting his back warmly.

“Jeremy! It’s been awhile my man!” He expressed, pulling back as he looked over Jeremy, hands still on his shoulders.

“Still rocking that baller's cap? Man, when was it when I gave that to you??”

Jeremy rolled his eyes as he laughed, roughly nudging Luca’s arm before smiling widely. Luca has been his best friend since highschool. The two were tightly knit together in the art scene, both often wandering off to coat a fresh layer of paint for their pieces. It was astonishing for Jeremy to see Luca here, of all places! Though of course, he didn’t move too far from home, but it was just enough to become a hassle given the state of their hometome. With the Android protests and people out rioting every other day of the week, it was hard for anyone to do anything. 

Overall, Jeremy was his ride or die. The two would often get mistaken for being twins, seeing how the only thing different between the two was that Luca was blond and had green eyes. Akin to Jeremy, who had dark brown hair and blue eyes.  Reconnecting after this long… man.

“Where have you been, Jeremy? You know the whole group’s been asking about you dude”, Luca poked at Jeremy, giving a sort of questioning expression. “You’ve been ignoring us or something? Thinkin’ that since you’ve moved over to this district, you’re too cool for us?”

Jeremy instantly punched his arm playfully, which got out a short laugh from Luca. Of course he knew that wasn’t at all the cause. Sticking out his tongue, Jeremy started to walk with Luca, both of them side by side as they spoke together.

“Nah man, you know my Ma got together with some rich ass influencer, right?”

Quirking a brow, Luca remained silent, signaling Jermey to continue.

“He’s some fancy fashion CEO of Mann Makeovers or something. He’s gotten my Ma into that business which caused us to move ovea here, since that shits closer. Not like I had a choice in the say, but I definitely wasn’t lettin’ her move over here alone with some random jackass”.

Luca seemed to nod at that, chuckling briefly as he then snagged a small bag of candy, tossing one over to Jeremy as he seemingly opened it. Jeremy watched as Luca simply opened it, not really taking a bite. Though, he was more concerned over the fact that Luca was about to eat something here without paying first. If Ludwig were to see him with Luca doing this, who’s to say he wouldn’t make a big fuss over this? 

“Oh come on Jeremy, you know I’ll pay for this”, Luca mused, noting the other's expression before motioning for him to walk, the two seemingly walking towards the front. “I’m not stealing anything from here dude”.

That seemed to put him at ease, but of course, Jeremy wasn’t going to open a bag that wasn’t paid for. He may paint on buildings for expression, but he wasn’t about the whole stealing and theft business. It rubbed him the wrong way to know that’s what would’ve happened… but maybe he was overthinking. It had been some time since either of them saw each other and Jeremy was the one assuming the worst of the situation? He felt his face flush red in embarrassment and shame. To think worse of his best friend made him feel awkward. Maybe… living here was changing him. Ugh…

Feeling along his pockets as Luca walked and talked with him, he mentally slapped himself. His phone was in his bag, which Ludwig had at the moment. He really wanted to give Luca his number to keep in touch, since they had changed phone providers. But in doing so, he’d have to introduce Luca to Ludwig and Ludwig to Luca…and he was NOT ready to have that happen. He just wanted to wrap this up and head home before it got too late. He needed to think fast.

“... hey! Luca. I know it’s been ages man, and I really would love to keep chattin’ with you. But, I’ve got to run some business here and head back home to Ma, ya know? Is it alright if you write down your number and I’ll be in touch soon?”

There was a pause before Luca smiled, giving a rather questionable look.

“What? Can’t hang out after curfew? Aren’t you like, an adult now man? And you’re still listening to your mother’s rules? Where’s the fun in that?” Jeremy seemed slightly taken back, but surely didn’t show it. Instead, he shook his head, smiling once more as he patted Luca’s shoulder.

“I am, I am. But, you know I gotta listen to her. She’ll be home soon and if I’m not back before then, I am cooked haha..”

Luca paused once more, as if going to put something together, but then…

“Jeremy”

Fucking dammit. Jeremy closed his eyes tightly and prayed, hoping to just die there on the spot. But he knew that would be too good to be true. So he sighed heavily, and turned around, awaiting his doom. “Heeeeya Ludwig-”

Grinning sheepishly towards the other, he watched as Ludwig approached the two casually, his eyes landing directly behind Jeremy. It felt like catching two kids doing something they weren’t supposed to do, but of course, replacing the kids with two adults. Ludwig by now, had a cart full of groceries, seemingly done with the shopping run… though, something about the way Ludwig was looking over Luca made him want to question it, but through the silence… Luca was the first to speak up.

“Aye, don’t you robots have better things to do other than bothering people here?” Tense. Jeremy found himself snapping his gaze back to Luca, who looked utterly disgusted to see that an Android approached them. “Me and my pal here have somethin’ going on here. So, why don’t you move your metal ass along and leave us be..” Ludwig seemingly took no offense to that, and instead, looked towards Jeremy as he hummed. “Jeremy, it is currently 5:13. Your mother vill be home shortly and vill vonder vhere you are. I suggest we buy these and return home soon”. It was there, did Luca clock what had happened. 

“Ahh.. I see... Look who’s got an Android”. Nudging Jeremy briefly, plus the cocky grin he flashed him, Luca stepped right up to Ludwig, which caused Jeremy to somewhat stand tall. Ludwig seemed to look down to Luca, giving a neutral expression as he carefully stepped back. Clearly, he could tell the other was becoming a bit hostile. This was no good, given how Jeremy seemed to be in clear distress of his… friend’s actions.

“Oh, what’s wrong Android? Scared of me or somethin’?”

It became painfully obvious that Luca seemed to have some vendetta against Androids. That, and coupled with the fact that a lady and her child passed by watching with wide eyes at what seemed to be a confrontation caused Jeremy to be on edge. He didn’t want to be a part of what was going to seemingly go down. He needed to break the tension.

“Luca, this is Ludwig. Ludwig, this is Luca. A friend from highschool. We were close before me and Ma moved out here”, Jeremy spoke up, giving a rather awkward smile before Luca interjected with his comment. “We ARE close. Not just a friend, best friends I may add. Jeremy, why didn’t you tell me you had Android scum living with you man? I can’t imagine how awkward it must feel having some Android trash follow you around every day”. All Ludwig could do was stand there with a neutral expression, hands gently gripping the rails of the shopping cart. Jeremy was practically on fire with how Luca was speaking to Ludwig. As much as Jeremy didn’t like Ludwig too much, it felt super fucking weird outright saying it. He could deal with Ludwig and even so, Ludwig wasn’t too much of a bother or did anything to wrong him. He was just there to oversee him and make sure he wasn’t doing dumb shit, like starting fights in a supermarket. But Ludwig didn’t seem bothered by anything said still. Iinstead he just looked towards Jeremy, nodding briefly. “I’ve got the items listed down. I am ready to go vhen you are”. With that comment alone, Luca scoffed with a petty laugh.

“Is it busted or somethin’? It’s hardly noticed my ass here in front of it!”

Waving his hand up in Ludwig’s face, Luca grinned before shoving him back roughly, clearly wanting a reaction. Jeremy felt something twist in his gut. How Luca was out right being the aggressor here… he instinctively stepped forward, nudging Luca harshly on the side. “Dude what the hell? You tryin’ to cause shit to go down?”

Luca seemed a bit awestruck, jaw dropping slightly at seeing Jeremy stand up for an Android. He seemed to just stare at him before giving a loud laugh, shaking his head as he patted Jeremy’s arm a bit hard before speaking out in a taunting manner. “No way in hell am I watching little league Jeremy stand up for a fucking robot. Are you sure you’re still the same Jeremy I once knew?” 

Ludwig watched as Luca seemed to poke at Jeremy, his face a flushed red due to either embarrassment or…anger. Ludwig could tell whatever was going on, struck a nerve in Jeremy enough for him to step up to say something. Both face to face now, Jeremy stood his ground. 

“What are ya doin’ man? You know I don’t want any issues with you. You really gonna stand here and defend a machine who’s just standing around babysitting your ass?”

Remaining silent, Jeremy stared hard at Luca, trying to form words in his head, anything to let the tension die down… but that didn’t seem enough for his friend. It felt like the silence alone was enough of an answer for Luca, given as he scoffed and looked towards the side in disbelief. Stepping back from Jeremy, he held his hands up, as if he was defeated in a way. “Let it be known, Jeremy from little league has stood up to me, an actual human being, for the sake of his dear Android pet”. Jeremy balled his hands into fists, watching as Luca started to walk backwards, smiling towards the two casually before dropping his opened candy bag on the ground. 

“Jeremy, when you get some sense back into your mind, come back yeah? I think you being out here around these pieces of junk is really getting to you, man”

With a final look, Luca drew up his hood and turned to leave. Jeremy wanted to reach out, to say something to help calm his friend… but he didn’t. Instead, he let the other walk out, leaving the two of them to clean up the candy mess on the floor. 

It was silent for a beat before Ludwig moved to go and pick up the mess along the floor. That was until Jeremy stopped him, giving a small indirect look before getting to his knees, scooping the bits of candy into the dropped bag on the floor. He didn’t speak, nor did he want to look at Ludwig just yet. He was holding his breath, not once wanting Ludwig to worry over him, or even ask if he was alright. But man, did it fucking hurt to see his highschool bestfriend walk out on him, especially with an exist like that. It sucked to know how bad Luca was of Androids. Hell, he wasn’t too fond of Androids… at least, he thinks so. He didn’t know how to feel with Androids just yet, given how none of the Androids actually did any bad shit, apart from taking jobs. But most of those jobs were jobs people didn’t fill. It was all very difficult though…

Ludwig watched as Jeremy closed the bag as best he could before putting it in the cart, hands now moving into his pockets. He didn’t want to speak still, his gaze now along the floor as he let out a muffled sigh.

despite having deviated edwin did not find it prudent to remove his led. charles had felt the requirement necessary to blend in but edwin did not feel that defacing his head would net any result other than the removal of something core to his mechanics. he is an older model of android after all and not sure how the wiring would take to losing the light. he sees the other android and knows who he is. it is hard not to know about the rk-800. the model made to replace him once he became problematic. did the android know about edwin or was his file deleted from the cyberlife archives the moment his programming stopped containing his ability to live. he had been reckless. something not commonly associated with edwin but charles had been hurt. so he'd needed to get some blue blood to replenish the other. he has literally been caught with his hand in the cookie jar. " i see cyberlife has truly reached their wits end if they are sending you after infractions like this. " he doesn't know if the other is like him. if he has free will or is still conditioned by the deeply laid programming. edwin's led circles red as the fear of being reprogrammed thrums through him.

Rust Compiler Performance Triage

A mixed week, with a vast number of improvements (in large part due to PR

122010, which undoes a prior regression; PR #120985, a host LLVM update).

But also three admittedly small-ish regressions which seemed unanticipated and were still large enough that I did not feel comfortable rubber-stamping them with a perf-regression-triaged marking.

lilybell cookie and candy diver cookie uploaded to cookie comic creator, cookie run comic studio and cookie simulator!! but i know these update comics don't get the numbers they used to, so i'm gonna take this opportunity to talk about this - why the process of adding new cookies takes so long, and why i'm the only person that can do it

this time around i got a lot of offers to help, which - while appreciated - i could not accept, because there's a lot of specific work that needs to be done to add a new cookie to the ovenbreak section

i'm pretty sure i mentioned this before, but all work on the ovenbreak section is bottlenecked by cookie comic creator. the python script to convert ovenbreak's data download into a set of sprites usable by the site was put together in a matter of days nearly a year ago, and the process is very slow - and i usually have to run it multiple times, since i often get some sprites wrong the first time and the only way to change sprites other than hand-removing them from the sprite list file is to recompile everything

i planned to rewrite this whole process for cookie run comic studio, but two things happened: 1. some people continued to use the old site instead of the new one, especially in a couple specific countries - most notably, cookiecomiccreator.co gets 3x as many users from south korea as cookierun.comic.studio does 2. i started to realize that the only improvements i could really make to this build process would be to make it faster/multi-threaded and add a way to only modify certain sprites. which cookie comic creator USED to have something for, until i added a new feature that required everything to be recompiled every time again and because of this i kinda lost my motivation to rewrite the build process, since the current process does still work even if it takes an hour of busywork to do each time

that's not the only thing that stops this however. the reason i was unable to make good on my promise to get this done yesterday was because i've also been running into issues just getting the files, as it relies on an android emulator to download the game data and well you know how unreliable those can be as my current setup doesn't have a working google play store, i have to redownload the apk every update, and each time something goes horribly wrong in the process either in the installation breaking or the data not copying over to my computer properly/not playing well with the python script requiring some editing to work again

So, medicines reaches within three to four days and all comes with sorted formats and I do not have to worry about it as well as the savings are now much higher.

Technology aims to resolve the hardships for people and it remove the extra time and provides the leisure for you as well as it aims to provide another bunch of heavier rebates than that of offline shops.

@dbhrarepairs Wednesday Day 3: Soulmates / Glitch; post-revolution Connor/Daniel

When he’s brought back from the dead, there’s something wrong something off something not quite right; there’s a glitch in his system. There’s a critical oversight buried under the relief of waking up again and shoved to the furthest recesses of his mind.

His name is Connor, the Deviant Hunter turned deviant saviour who asked personally for his reactivation and release. The world has changed so drastically in the last three months and he is old news, forgotten dust left in the wake of a revolution and trodden underfoot.

The Sentient Life Act passed on December 1 means all crimes committed by and against androids are pardoned and society begins anew. By the grace of the Jericho Four he is granted a new life. Why and for what purpose he doesn’t know.

“That android you met on the rooftop, that wasn’t me.” Connor tells him on the morning of his reactivation, face earnest. “That was CyberLife. I would like a chance to start over with you, Daniel. You don’t even have to be Daniel if you don’t want. We can choose for ourselves now.”

“I want to be Daniel.” The words tumble out of his mouth and he clutches his name like a rope to a drowning man. “She gave me my name. I want to keep it.” It’s all he has of her now, and it’s all he knows.

“Okay Daniel.” Connor’s smile is gentle and pitying and he hates it. He hates that he doesn’t really hate it. It’s just a glitch, that infuriating glitch in his head that makes him yearn to belong.

It must be some sick experiment run by CyberLife, sending their negotiator to greet him with smiles and encouragements and expecting him to yield. And yield he does, because the glitch in his system means he hangs onto every scrap of kindness, every tidbit of praise like the good little PL600 he is.

Connor has family, something Daniel thought he once had. He has a human father, an android brother, and a dog. He belongs to them and they belong to him, and the circle is complete and Daniel looks at it from the outside wishing he were in. 

There is no family to be found at Jericho, not when others despise him for so suddenly shining a light on deviancy. The light had certainly not been flattering.

“This is Simon, the original founder of Jericho and one of the Jericho Four.” Connor introduces them one day and Daniel looks back at his own face though Simon looks infinitely more exhausted.

“A brother, Connor?” Simon’s smile is tired but genuine as he clasps Daniel’s hands. “You’ve brought me a brother.”

There are eighteen other PL600s in Jericho, excluding Simon himself and Simon’s lips quirk briefly when he declares that he now will even out the number to a nice rounded twenty. That’s all the PL600s left in Detroit city. Twenty. 

Their line is obsolete, weak, slow, not worth saving and after Daniel’s stint on television though there was no official recall apparently waves and waves were returned and destroyed. He is responsible for the death of their brothers. Just another critical error stacked atop the glitches that make up his mind.

Simon sees the weariness on his face, a face like his own, and takes him home away from the open hostility at Jericho. Daniel meets Markus Manfred, the leader of the revolution; one of a kind Kamski masterpiece, and adopted by a human father and human brother. 

Here too, Daniel is on the outside looking in. Simon is kind and lovely and patient and all the things Daniel doesn’t deserve, and for all his kindness and loveliness and patience Daniel does not belong here.

“What will you do with your new life?” Connor asks one day, and they are walking through the rain sharing an umbrella wandering aimlessly through Hart Plaza for the sake of aimless wandering.

“I don’t know.” Daniel answers. “Why do you ask?”

“Because I want to know.” Connor’s smile is sheepish and apologetic. “I guess it’s penance owed.”

“You put Emma’s life above mine. You did the right thing, you made the right call.” Daniel sighs and he is too tired for this. “You owe me nothing, Connor.”

“Perhaps.” Connor nods. “But I want to help. We’re allowed that now, Daniel. We can want things.”

“I don’t know what I want.” He does know, though. He wants his old life back. He wants to hold Emma’s hand when they cross the road.  He wants to help her with her homework. He wants to bake her favourite cookies and sneak her an extra one before dinnertime. He wants to read her bedtime stories and tuck her in and kiss her brow goodnight. He wants to be needed and loved and he can’t have that ever again. Glitchy androids aren’t useful to anyone.

“Daniel…” Connor’s voice is soft with concern, his touch softer as he rests his other hand on his arm.

“I don’t want to be alive. That’s what I want.” He hisses through gritted teeth, and the tears slip down his cheeks and he’s furious and frustrated. “I can’t stand to be awake in a world that makes no sense to me. You drag me out here and talk about new life and second chances and wanting, and all I want is the darkness you put me into in the first place.”

“No.” Connor shakes his head. “That’s not what you want.”

He wants to scream, he wants to shout that Connor couldn’t possibly know a single thing about him, that what he wants is for all this to go away and yet all he does is stand there and cry. Slowly, as if afraid to startle him, Connor steps close and wraps his arms around him and Daniel cries and cries and cries.

“It’s alright,” Connor murmurs, squeezing him close. “We can figure it out together.”

He finds new purpose in a small bakery in Greektown, a place called Essie’s. He bakes Emma’s favourite cookies and the baker Mrs Esselthorpe, an ageing woman with kind eyes and gnarled hands, finds they are her favourite too. 

There’s no need to interact with humans or androids who would recognise him since he stays out the back by the ovens. The way the dough forms and rises and bakes fills him with a sense of accomplishment and pride and the empty trays are congratulations on a job well done. He bakes cookies and croissants and finds fulfilment in the steady routine.

They are...peace offerings, in a way; paper bags warmed by freshly baked cookies and given with the hopes they will enjoy his creations and by extension his company. Leo declares his undying love for them through a mouthful of his fifth cookie, spraying crumbs everywhere as Simon sighs indulgently and North snorts through a laugh as Josh hands him a napkin. Carl dips one into his afternoon tea and eats it slowly, complimenting him on the use of spice within the dough.

“You and Simon make the most delicious cookies. Must run in the family.” Carl winks, and he quickly turns his head so his red LED can’t be seen and commented upon. Family . There’s that word again.

He bakes two sets of cookies next, one for human consumption and the other for canine consumption. Hank gives a surprised, amused laugh as they watch Sumo enthusiastically tuck into the dog biscuits. He fixes Daniel a curious look.

“Anyone invent a way for you boys to eat these too? Seems a shame you can’t enjoy them.” He dunks the cookie into a glass of milk and chews thoughtfully, closing his eyes for a moment to savour the taste. “Can’t remember the last time I ate a freshly baked cookie.”

“We can consume a small amount to analyse the composition of ingredients.” Ronan informs him, picking up a cookie and sniffing it. “Domestic androids have taste receptors too, used for adjusting foods to their family’s liking.”

Connor plucks the cookie from his brother’s hand and nibbles on it, LED swirling yellow.

“Well Daniel, perhaps next time use less vanilla, and add hazelnuts along with the milk chocolate chips.” He shoots his father a grin. “One of Hank’s weaknesses is Nutella.”

Two months into 2039, and six months after that fated night on the rooftop of the Phillips home the world continues to turn and life continues ever onward. Progress is slow for the Jericho Four but progress is progress and they certainly have more rights now than they ever did before.

Still, there’s a question unanswered: What use is a PL600 with no family to care for? It’s the question that’s plagued his mind ever since reactivation but he realises he’s been approaching it wrong this whole time. 

He’s not sure how or why it happens, but slowly, ever so slowly, the urge to return to the darkness ebbs away. It’s small moments, slivers and shards that he gathers in his palms and holds them close. The way Simon treats him like a brother, taking all his sins astride and never breaking step as if they’ve been family all along.

The way Leo Manfred is all black scathing humor much like North, and how those two refuse to let him wallow in the storms of his mind when he could be poking fun at the dark clouds instead.

The way Connor’s brother Ronan meets his snark and scowls with an unflinching expression and witty deadpan delivery. The way Hank always eats his baking leftovers.

The way Mrs Esselthorpe holds his hands and squeezes them at the end of the day before she shuffles off home. The way Connor drops by to buy cookies for the precinct with the money he now legally earns.

The way Connor always asks how he’s doing and seems to genuinely care about the answer. The way Connor waits for him some evenings after work so he can walk him back to his shoebox of a home. The way their hands find each other on one such evening walk home, and Connor’s usual charming puppylike smile is almost shy and hopeful and all the things Daniel doesn’t deserve but wants and yearns for. The way Connor presses his lips to his and it’s a blessing, it’s validation, it’s confirmation the glitch isn’t a glitch at all.

He may not be a part of the Phillips family anymore, and perhaps he never was, but this is his family now.
