Step 5. Check user permissions

Search the WordPress users section to make sure that only you and your trusted team members have administrator access to the site.

Since version 3.1 came out, WordPress generates a set of security keys that encrypts your passwords. Protect my site from hosting

I am a freelance developer with over a decade’s experience in bespoke WordPress sites. I recently finished a small job on a freelance website for a client who basically wanted some minor updates and a blog post added. Easy to do, asked for access to the dashboard and hosting but only got access to the dashboard and although there are 18 updates (including WordPress itself) my client refused access to the hosting control panel.

I advised that I needed access to this to run a backup but again was refused. I did the best I could and my new client seemed happy with this and paid me the full amount on time. I rang the client out of courtesy and to explain that for me to be more effective in my job that I would need access to the hosting to run backups and then Update all the plugins, WordPress and generally optimize the site and make it more secure.

What follows is the most surreal telephone conversation I have ever experienced:

Client: Thank you for helping with my site. I am more than happy. I have settled your invoice in full. Please leave the updates as they will break my site and make it less secure.

Me: Are you sure as it’s insecure as it is? The updates include security patches which will make your site less vulnerable than it already is. It’s this reason why I need access to your hosting cpanel.

Client: No that’s ok, thank you for your help on my site, but we have been hacked loads of times over the past 2 years and was told by our friend who built our sites to never give out hosting info to anyone as it’s his. My husband wishes to talk with you about his website now….

Me: Ok….

Client’s Husband: Thank you for working on my wife’s site. Can you help with mine as well? I just need some info as I can do the job myself. I have been locked out of my site for over 3 years now. WordFence has permanently locked me out. I need you to protect my site from hosting.

Me: Have you filled out the form on the WordFence lock screen? This will unlock it for you by sending an email and you will be able to gain access to the admin area of the website.

Client’s Husband: That email does not exist anymore. My friend moved hosting 3 years back, He has told me never to give out hosting info to anyone which is why I am refusing access as we don’t want to be hacked again.

Me: …

I go onto explain that in order to gain full access of the website I WILL NEED full cpanel access and that I will have to delete WordFence itself and then I can reset it for him. That is the only way you can get full access.

Client’s Husband: No my friend told me never to delete WordFence as it’s protecting my site and that I should never give anyone hosting access EVER. I have done it before, I just need to change a line of code, do you know how to do this or not? What is the line of code?

Me: Yes, I know how to do it, But again I need access to hosting. As I deal with thousands of lines of code every day, I need to refresh my memory and I cannot see the code in front of me as I do not have access to your hosting.

Client’s Husband: Forget it, you clearly do not know what you are talking about and are a cowboy, you cannot tell me what line of code I need to change. I will have to figure it out myself, thanks for nothing.

Me: …..

I think that from memory all he has to do it whitelist his IP address. That’s usually the blocking mechanism in these security plugins

I send them both an email with links to my Facebook, Yelp, Google and Trustpilot reviews and a link to a blog post on how to gain access to WordPress by deleting WordFence. I guess his site is so well protected that even he cannot get access. I doubt I will hear of him again in the future.

2 Things You Need Before Installing WordPress Before you installing WordPress, first you will need a domain name and second a good web hosting company. Then down a little, you will see the site settings section. Under this section, first you need to fill a title and description of your site. If you don’t want yet, don’t worry you can easily change them from your wordpress admin area after installation. Next, you need to choose an admin username, strong password, and email address. Softaculous will automatically fill in the username and password fields for you. It will use a non-dictionary word for username and a strong password.

You can change them if you want so that they are easy to remember for you. However, we strongly suggest you to always use a strong password. Always you will use correct email address in the admin email field. Because wordpress will send notifications and password reset link if you ever forgot your password. Rest of the options are optional. So you can now click on the install button to run the installer.

Softaculous will run the installer using the settings you provided. You will see a progress bar with installation status. It will take a couple of minutes, do not close the window until the progress bar reaches 100% otherwise this may affect your wordpress installation. You will see a success message after the installation is finished. It will also show you a link to your website and another link to your wordpress admin area.

How to Install WordPress using FTP Just the five steps to install wordpress. Download the latest version of WordPress.Upload those files to your web server, using FTP or cpanel file manager.Create a MySQL database and user for WordPress.Configure WordPress to connect to the database that you created for you wp site.Complete the installation and setup your website! First thing you need to do is download the latest version of WordPress. Unzip the file, and use FTP to upload WordPress files into your web host directory of your choice.

If you want to install WordPress on your root domain name (like example.com), then you need to upload WordPress files to your website’s root directory. Usually this directory is called /public_html/. On the other hand, If you want to install WordPress in a subfolder (like example.com/myblog), then upload it in a folder /public_html/myblog/. Once you are done uploading WordPress, go to your hosting control panel to create a database. We are using cPanel web hosting, so you will find icon as like below screenshot.

You will see a field to create a new database. Enter your database name, and click “Create Database”.

Now that you have created your database, MySQL still needs a username MySQL Databases page in your cPanel account, down a little MySQL Users section. Simply provide a username and password for your new user and click on the ‘Create user’ button.

This new user still does not have access to the database you created earlier. For that you will need to add the user to the database and give them permissions to perform all actions. On the same MySQL Databases page in your cPanel account, down a little ‘Add User to a Database’ section. Select the database user you created from the dropdown menu next to user, then select database, and click on the add button.

You will be now asked for the privileges you want to allow this user. Select all privileges and click on the Make changes button.

Your MySQL database and user are now ready, and it is time to run the install. Now go to to the URL where you uploaded WordPress. If it is in the main domain, then enter your domain name in the browser window, like example.com or www. example.com. You will see the language selection page. You can choose a language and click on the continue button to procced.

You will now see some installation instructions. Wordpress will need database name, password, and mysql host information. Click on the ‘Let’s go’ button to continue.

Now wordpress will show you a database connection form. You need to enter the database name, user name, password and database host.

Then click on submit button.

Next you will see ‘Run the install’ page. So you have to click on ‘Run the Install’ button to continue. Now wordpress will create tables in your database and then send you to the next step of the installation. Then you need to fill some information for wordpress to setup your site. This includes site title, username, password, and admin email address. If you do not want your website to be visible to search engines, then you can check the box next to search engine visibility

Click on the Install wordpress button to continue. Wordpress will setup your website and finish the installation. You will see a success message showing your username. You can now click on the Log in button to sign in to your wordpress site.

10 Reasons Your WordPress Site Will Get Hacked (and How to Stop It)

A hacked WordPress site is as damaging as having your home burgled. It can completely shatter your peace of mind and adversely impact your online business.

Why do hackers target WordPress sites? The answer is relatively simple: WordPress is the single biggest platform for website creation these days, so there’s a larger base to attack; this attracts the attention of online criminals.

So, how can a hack impact your website?

To take control of your site, hackers often try to break into and control your wp-admin folder in your installation. As the website owner, you must take measures to protect your wp-admin directory.

How can you protect your wp-admin folder? First, restrict the number of users having access to this critical folder. Additionally, apply for password protection as an added layer of security for access to the wp-admin folder. You can do this using the “Password Protection Directories” feature of the cPanel in your web host account.

Pro tip: Besides these fixes, you can also implement Two Factor Authentication (or 2FA) protection for all your admin accounts.

8. Non-SSL Website

You can easily migrate your HTTP website to HTTPS by installing an SSL certificate on your site. SSL (or Secure Socket Layer) is a secure mode of encrypting any data transmission between your web server and the client browser.

Without this encryption, hackers can intercept the data and steal it. Plus, a non-secure website can have many negative implications for your business – lower SEO ranking, loss of customer trust, or a drop in incoming traffic.

How do you fix this problem? You can quickly obtain an SSL certificate from your hosting company or SSL providers. It encrypts all data that is sent from and received by your website.

Resetting a WordPress website means returning all the files and databases to their original state. While this is ideal for those wishing to start fresh, it also means that all content that was previously on the website will no longer be accessible.

You may have created a number of test posts or pages and now wish to start with a clean slate for a live website. Completing a full website reset can be an efficient way of ‘cleaning up’ to start building your live site after testing is complete.

This is the best way to reset WordPress for those who aren’t that WordPress savvy. Using a plugin to reset your WordPress can be hassle free and means you will never need to leave your WordPress dashboard. While this way is effective, it means that you will still need to have access to your WordPress site.

Step 1) From your WordPress dashboard, click on the Plugins menu and then on ‘add new‘. Search for the following plugin: WP Reset. Step 2) ‘Install‘ and ‘Activate‘ the WP Reset Plugin (Please note: This is not a TTHQ plugin).

Step 3) Now click on the ‘Tools‘ menu in your WordPress Dashboard. Step 4)Under ‘Tools‘ click on the sub-menu; WP Reset. Step 5) Read the text to ensure you wish to reset your WordPress. If you are happy to go ahead and reset, type the word ‘Reset‘ in the field towards the bottom. Also specify any ‘Post-reset Actions‘ that you wish to occur. Step 6) Click the ‘Reset WordPress‘ button. Step 7) Click the ‘Reset WordPress‘ button again to confirm a full reset.

You have now completed a reset of your WordPress website.

Method 2) Resetting WordPress Install without the Use of a Plugin

To reset your WordPress install without the use of a plugin you will need to have access to your website’s cPanel (or similar). The details needed to access your WordPress database can be obtained from your hosting provider.

This method is said to be the harder method of the two, although by following the instructions below even someone without developer knowledge should be able to reset their WordPress account.

Using cPanel to Reset a WordPress Website

Step 1) Log in to your ‘cPanel‘ account for the WordPress install that you wish to reset. Step 2) Once you have logged into cPanel, click on the ‘MySQL Databases‘ button located under the ‘Databases‘ section.

Step 3) Find the name of the database in question and ensure you copy and paste the name of it into a notepad. You’ll need this later. Step 4) From the actions column, click the ‘Delete‘ button for the database you wish to reset. This will delete that WordPress database so ensure if you wished to save any of that data, you did that prior to clicking delete.

Step 5) Now you will not be able to access your WordPress website until the following steps are completed. Step 6) At the top of that same page, you’ll need to ‘Recreate‘ that database. Paste the name of the database from your notepad into the ‘Create Database‘ field. If you do not copy and paste the name of your previous database correctly, the reset will not work. Step 7) Click the ‘Create Database‘ button. This database should now appear under the ‘Current Databases‘ section.

Step 8) You will now need to add back the admin user to be able to access that database. You will need to use the exact same username and password as you used previously otherwise the file won’t recognize the new database.

Step 9) You have now added the database back and created your admin user. With this method the themes, uploads and plugins you had will not be deleted. If you wish to delete them to start fresh with a new feel WordPress site, you’ll need to head to the ‘wp-content‘ directory in the WordPress root folder. From there you can delete the files under: Plugins, Theme and Uploads. It is recommended to leave one theme. Step 10) This is the final step in the reset process. You’ll need to copy your website’s primary URL and add it to the following in the browser /wp-admin/install.php. For example: https://plugin-demo.com/wp-admin/install.php. It will ask you to fill in your login details here. This is the last crucial step to resetting your WordPress website.
