Top 8 Chess Strategies Every Beginner Must Learn to Win More Games
Chess is not just a game; it is intelligence and strategy. For beginners, understanding the basic techniques is the foundation to improve and succeed in many games. Once you get these basics right, you can transition into random moves and playing with purpose and accuracy.
In this blog we will discuss the top 8 chess techniques that every beginner should learn to improve their game Plus, see how KingCompiler, the first chess course, can guide you in making these techniques in the exact same way.
1. Control the center from the beginning The center of the board (squares d4, d5, e4, e5) is the most important area in chess. Controlling it gives your piece more strength and power.
How to do it:
Start by moving pawns to control the center (e.g., e4 or d4).
Rotate your knights and bishops to have a mid-field effect.
At KingCompiler, students learn the importance of central control through practical exercises and expert guidance.

2. Make your pieces first A common early mistake is not getting pieces (knight, bishops, etc.) fast enough. Leaving them idle can hinder your chances of winning.
Key tips:
Prioritize the development of his army and bishops.
Avoid moving the same piece repeatedly in the opening.
KingCompiler ensures that beginners understand the importance of progress and teaches effective ways to get pieces in play.
3. The King Puts Safety First (Castling) . Protecting your king is an important option. Leaving your king out can leave you vulnerable to previous attacks.
What you need to do:
Protect your king by the gates of the castle in the morning.
Avoid unnecessary pawn behavior with the king.
KingCompiler teaches beginners the importance of king defense and how to balance offense and defence.
4. Avoid moving the same piece repeatedly in the opening Repetition wastes time and gives your opponent a progression advantage.
Why it matters:
Any move should help create a stronger position.
Avoid “block-fitting” without a clear purpose.
KingCompiler’s class list emphasizes efficient block movement and proper programming.
5. Create a solid pawn system Your pawns are the backbone of your position. Weak pawn policies can lead to long-term losses.
Best Practices:
Avoid isolated, double, or backward pawns.
Target connected pawns helping each other.
KingCompiler trains beginners to avoid common pitfalls in order to build robust pawn systems.
6. Learn the basic checkmate system Checkmating an opponent is the main goal of chess. Beginners should focus on creating basic prototypes e.g.
Back-Rank Checkmate.
King and Rook Checkmate.
Checkmate in King and Queen.
In KingCompiler, students use this model until they create a second product.
7. Understand the relative value of each piece Each piece has a specific value (e.g. Pawns = 1, Knights/Bishops = 3, Rooks = 5, Queens = 9). Understanding this helps you make better decisions about change.
Key tips:
Avoid unnecessary changes unless they benefit you.
Always consider piece price and position.
KingCompiler provides guidance exercises to help players figure out when and why to swap pieces.

Beginners often struggle with connecting the phases of a game. Understanding how to transition is essential for long-term success.
Tips for a Smooth Transition:
Focus on piece activity in the opening.
Look for tactical opportunities in the middle game.

I’m just very obsessed with the idea that mihawk is useless in a weapon less fight like he cannot throw a punch or get out of a pin to save his life like one he can’t kick he’s done out for the count, and this is why Shanks ends most of their duels this way. Because he’s a filthy cheater and Mihawk is even worse off because it’s Shanks pining him and he has eaten a lot of dirt.
Shanks decides to teach him the art of fighting dirty cause he’s nice that way but also let’s just say that Shanks likes being in a pin a little too much
#the first time mihawk pins him straddling his hips he smiles shanks looks up and swears he sees god#but yeah this position definitely escalated things a lot of times#Shanks is playing 3-d chess on how to get laid#I love the idea of especially when they were much younger and mihawk was marginally less serious a lot#their duels ended with them wresting in the dirt#and because I cannot for the life of me imagine Mihawk throwing a punch I’m just going to assume he was hilariously bad at this as well#like he’s not terrible at wresting but once you have him pinned no weapon in hand that’s it he’s done#but even with like a pen he would fucking take your light out#this is the only thing they do where Shanjs can really win and Mihawk hates it (so he claims the full body blush says otherwise)#one piece#throwing thoughts to the void#dracule mihawk#op#hawkeye mihawk#mishanks#akagami no shanks#shanks#red haired shanks#akataka#mihawk x shanks

There is a scene where Arthur goes to the camp after Guarma and finds Dutch talking to himself commenting on a chess move and I find it curious how the chess move that Dutch is commenting on is a famous chess move where pawns are sacrificed in order to win.
#I've been researching this because I saw it in a comment and I thought it was super curious#the chess move is the Dutch defense where the white pieces would be the Pinkertons and the black pieces would be the Van der Linde bands#I love how it's a metaphor for how Dutch ultimately sold out the band so he could win#I don't have much idea about chess so I can't go into much depth </3#rdr2#red dead redemption community#red dead fandom#red dead redemption 2#dutch van der linde#rdr2 community#rdr2 dutch

Eloise is really, really bad at chess😐
(this is a scene from my fic & I typed it up here:)
"Milady, you cannot send him there! He will surely die a terrible death, and Murdoch is our finest knight!"
Eloise blinked her bleary eyes at the wizarding chess board, not really comprehending what the tiny pieces were yelling at her. The one that seemed to be doing the most talking was gesticulating wildly and jumping up and down, trying to get her attention. When she had taken the pieces out of the box Sebastian had lent her, they had immediately recognized her and started protesting, appealing to 'their benevolent lord's innate sense of goodness', but their protests fell on deaf ears. Eloise was positive that Sebastian took some sort of perverse pleasure at watching her lose at chess.
In the background, she could hear Ominis's laughter echoing through the Undercroft. His own pieces were quite happy at the moment, preening and occasionally sending rude gestures towards Eloise's, much to Sebastian's amusement. He was narrating their every action to Ominis, whose laughter was egging on his soldiers even more.
"Eloise," Sebastian said, propping his chin up by one hand (entirely too amused, infuriatingly so, why did he have to look so handsome when she was trying to be annoyed at him?), "maybe you should move the knight..." his other hand pointed to an empty space on the board, "...here."
This declaration caused an uproar. There were shouts of betrayal, tiny pieces gesticulating wildly to the carnage surrounding the board as they shouted in vain. She didn't see any other viable moves, so Eloise sighed and ordered the brave little Murdoch to where Sebastian had suggested. Chaos immediately ensued and Ominis's queen gleefully knocked his head off with a violent swing of her scepter. Eloise's pawns all doubled over, sobbing as their most valient knight fell, and her remaining bishop shook his tiny fist in outrage up at her.
After a few more minutes, much to Eloise's ashamed relief and the boys' disappointment, her pieces refused to move for either her or Sebastian. They solemnly collected the remains of their fallen comrades with as much dignity as they could muster and marched off the board and back into their box in a mourning parade of sorts.
Sebastian joined Ominis's pieces as they jeered the losing team off the board, causing Eloise to glare fiercely at him. "You were the one telling me what to do, and they're your pieces! Show some loyalty."
He shrunk away from the intensity of her gaze and held up his hands in protest. "I was suggesting the moves as a joke! After last week's fiasco, I didn't think you'd fall for it again."
Ominis was laughing so hard he was gasping for breath, and the two of them turned to watch him. Even through her irritation, Eloise couldn't help but smile at him - he was always so solemn and these bouts of mirth were few and far between. He managed to speak between bouts of laughter. "I...I couldn't...I couldn't believe it when you sent your bishops one by one into my trap! It was so obvious! And then...and then you..." Ominis dissolved into fits of laughter again and couldn't finish.
Eloise turned her angry glare to him. "We can't all be chess geniuses!"
"I've tried teaching you and you don't listen! For the next time, I'm only going to give you one piece of advice: don't listen to Sebastian." He chuckled once more to himself and then turned slightly to the board, addressing his men (and queen) and giving them a debriefing. He always did this after he won the matches; it was a strange sort of ritual that he seemed to look forward to.

POV: the you’re a fairy and the silly little dark unicorn is making you play chess with him
I was in between doing like really cheap dollar tree plastic chess pieces (cuz he would totally use them 😭) or fancy expensive ones, but I ended up doing the fancy marble ones because they're more fun to draw. Anyways I have like the symbolism for the placement of the chess pieces and stuff in the tags cuz most likely no sane people want to read it 😭 @lunar-lurker
#I LOVE HIM SO MUCHHHHHHG#anyways#he’s playing with the black chess pieces because they match him and he’s a dark unicorn#He has the Queen in checkmate instead of the king (I wanted it to represent the fairy queen)#I did this cuz even though the queen is a valuable piece it wouldn’t win the game like killing a king would#This kinda shows how ronodin lets his desire for revenge get in the way of making strategical decisions (taking over the fairy realm)#He’s also using his king to kill the opposing queen (the king represents him) this shows how he wants to personally get revenge#I’m pretty sure there’s more but this is all I can remember rn 😭#Ronodin#fablehaven fanart#art#chess#fhdw#dragonwatch#Fablehaven#Chess drawing#digital art

Hey, I was wondering why you think Roxy was destined to end up with Eridan? I get the shared wizard interest and the quirk foreshadowing I guess, but that still seems like a large stretch. It's kinda like saying that Equius and Dirk are going to end up together because they both like robots and horses. It's just seems like the sort of character remixing that Hussie uses a lot in Homestuck. But what do you think?
Roxy
- fucking LOVES WIZARDS
- is a hipster and literally wears a colorswapped version of eridans scarf
- is pink and bubbly
- uses riflekind
- has a perfectly opposite powerset to eridan (can create anything by stealing its void away vs. can destroy anything with pure belief) and are connected to each other through the matriorb
- has a crush on a troubled, eccentric prince so you know that's her type
- quirk cameo with momlonde
Eridan
- Is a wizard
- Is a hipster and literally wears a colorswapped version of roxy's scarf
- Uses riflekind
- Had a huge crush on Feferi, a bubbly pink girl whom he (wrongly) believed to be so nice she might not even be capable of pitch, so we know that's his type
- The equal and opposite powerset & quirk cameo
At the end of the day I can't tell you what to ship, nor am I interested in making anyone ship anything, but I'm kind of just saying, the things that make Roxy predisposed to liking Eridan are, like, the biggest parts of her character, and Eridan is very easy & would pretty much say yes to anybody, but Roxy is also definitely His Type and Eridan is a simp who thrives under any sort of positive attention & would do anything someone asked if they were giving him positive feedback. or attention at all. case in point kanaya fucking hates him but at least she talks to him and he's constantly praising the shit out of her
Jane and Jake also have their introductions IMMEDIATELY followed by talking about how they've got a thing for "cobalt" hunks and "cerulean babes" respectively, so setting up roxy with eridan also fits into a pattern of the b2 kids being set up to date a dead troll. still rereading this part of the comic, but it really jumped out to me how blatant it was for jake and jane
#ship what you want to ship idc but#imo the foreshadowing is pretty blatant#which also fits with eridan because pale erikar was one of the most heavily foreshadowed things in the comic#and imo pitch calliope/eridan was also in the cards though less blatantly#calliope has 'biologically compelled to spades guys that remind her of her brother“ disease (moment of silence)#and eridan has literally been described as a proto-caliborn and also kind of is that#an evil wizard boy obsessed with murder and genocide who has zero social skills#the angel killer and the cherub whose adult form is a snake with wings#the destroyer of hope and the cherub whose adult form features white wings that look like the hope symbol#im just saying they're 50/50 at winning in chess bc theyre that one meme thats like#'my gf who doesnt know how shes losing' 'me whos eating the pieces when she isnt looking'#'BELIEVING IN YOUR PIECES IS NOT A VIABLE CHESS STRATEGY!!!!' like can you imagine#it'd be so goddamn funny if theres anyone capable of hating calliope itd be eridan#eridan (idiot) (mentally ill) (zero social skills) (derogatory)#erirox#eriroxy

Top 10 Chess Endgame Strategies to Win More Games Easily
1. Master King and Pawn Endgames
King and pawn endgames are the foundation of chess. Learn how to use your king actively and calculate whether your pawn can promote before your opponent can react.
Pro Tip: Always calculate the “opposition” to control key squares and outmaneuver your opponent.
2. The Power of Opposition

3. Rook Endgames Are Crucial
Rook endgames are the most common endgames in chess. Key ideas include cutting off the enemy king and activating your rook to attack pawns.
Quick Tip: Use your rook behind passed pawns — they’re stronger there.
4. Convert Pawn Majority into a Win
5. The Philidor Position
The Philidor position helps you draw difficult rook endgames when defending. It’s a lifesaver tactic every chess player should know.
6. The Lucena Position
On the flip side, the Lucena position teaches you how to win rook endgames with a passed pawn. This technique ensures your pawn gets promoted.
7. Knight vs. Bishop Endgames
Knights are powerful in closed positions, while bishops dominate open diagonals. Know when to trade and when to keep your pieces in these critical endgames.
8. Active Pieces Are Key
In the endgame, an active king and pieces are far better than passive ones. Always strive for activity to pressure your opponent’s position.
9. Avoid Stalemates
A single mistake can turn a winning position into a draw. Always be mindful of your opponent’s limited moves to avoid accidentally creating a stalemate.
10. Practice with Endgame Puzzles
To master these strategies, regular practice is essential. Solving endgame puzzles sharpens your calculation skills and reinforces key concepts.

On Childe, scheming, the whole Arle conversation and everything.
I can't really agree either with the interpretation that he secretly a scheming mastermind or with the interpretation that he's naive and gullible.
Rather I have the impression that he knows his limitations very well and he plays around those.
He can't charm the Traveler into liking and trusting him in Liyue (we obviously remain mildly hostile to him throughout the whole arc) but he doesn't need it, does he? The Traveler is desperate and Childe is their only source of help, so they have to dance to his tune anyway.
(his best move there was to pick a desperate person and an outsider)
He can't know what Pulcinella is planning (it was translated weirdly but in CN he says something like "I'm not good at understanding relationships"), so he pretends everything is fine while digging for information when he can.
He can't outscheme Arle so he just... asks. Very bluntly. Why not if it works.
I think it's way more badass than simply being a better schemer than everyone. He's just good/decent, not a genius, but he knows that about himself and makes use of that knowledge.
He also repeatedly makes use of people underestimating him and he seems to pretend he's simpler than he is around colleagues. He was doing it with Zhongli too ("Mr.Zhongli you are so smaaart." "Oops, chopsticks are so hard to use, I'm so silly."), so why not with other people. I think it's a way of defending himself. People won't try to play 11d chess against him if they think he is stupid and the usual 5d chess he can manage.
It's actually very interesting how in Labyrinth warriors he drops his mask for a bit and lets us know that he can follow schemes and analyse them very well. I came to see it as a sign of our friendship no less important than the vision handover. In a way he revealed his cards there.
#I still want to write a fic scene where he wins against lumine at chess or maybe go#and she gets a glimpse of how devilishly smart the guy is#and how even if she wasn't underestimating him to begin with the level at which he plays is still surprising#childe#tartaglia

xiaochen, to me, is like. li tianchen is building a house of cards. liu xiao tells him that card houses are fragile so you have to be strong enough to withstand the event of them falling eventually. but li tianchen's card house hasn't fallen yet! so li tianchen just keeps building the house of cards and puts his identity into being a really good builder of card houses. liu xiao maybe even gives him more cards and compliments his house making skills. and it's like. "wouldn't it be fun to topple it later? just pull out one card, and woosh! it's all gone in a second. doesn't that sound fun?" and tbh li tianchen would (and has) enjoy(ed) toppling card houses, but only if it's other people's card houses. this one though? he just built this card house after the last one fell apart and he's gonna be inconsolably upset if this one falls apart too. and it does fall apart — spectacularly, even, that all the cards get blown away by the wind and li tianchen doesn't have any cards anymore to build a new card house. maybe he doesn't want to build a card house anymore. can't be a good card house builder without cards.
so liu xiao offers to play a new game with him. remember when your card house fell apart, tianchen? there are other games like that, games we can play that don't need cards. we can play dominoes. we can play jenga. half the fun is watching something you construct fall apart, you know? here, I'll teach you how to play. do you want to play?
and li tianchen is like. well I don't have cards anymore. I'll probably suck at playing other games, but it'd be nice to play games with someone else. what else is there to do? liu xiao gave him cards earlier, so he might as well see what other games he plays.
liu xiao asks him if he wants to play cards and li tianchen tells him nah, liu xiao should choose what they play. liu xiao smiles and brings out the jenga set.
li tianchen doesn't know how to play jenga but he learns quickly. he misses his cards but it's fun taking turns playing jenga with liu xiao. they're constructing something together! li tianchen isn't playing alone. that's nice. liu xiao wants to play games. li tianchen is good at playing a game; maybe he can be good at playing more than one game.
then liu xiao tells him that this jenga tower will fall too. that's all part of the game. li tianchen understands this. it'd be less upsetting if li tianchen is the one who takes it apart instead, so it's on his own terms, instead of waiting for someone else to topple it. but is it really on his own terms if liu xiao was the one who suggested playing jenga in the first place?
maybe soon liu xiao will topple the jenga tower they built together. but it hasn't happened yet! when (not if) it does happen, well, li tianchen has gotten good at playing games now. so liu xiao will keep playing with him, right? liu xiao likes games, and li tianchen is a good player. and good players aren't afraid of game overs anymore. it's all part of the game.
#mine musings#liveblogging link click#link click#idk how to explain them but do you see the vision#actually i think perhaps lx likes to “win” or execute a good strategy. not just “play games”#'cause let's be real. lx would cheat if he can get away with it lmao#ltc is also not above cheating but not against lx. maybe “for” him though yeah#the thing is now lx can just make up the rules and tell ltc it's a new game and ltc will be like. cool. let's play#lx can tell him he's a chess piece. lx can teach him russian roulette. ltc doesn't set boundaries#“you can quit anytime” as if ltc would ever quit anymore. he's a player now. if he doesn't play lx's games then what is he anymore?#can't be a good player if you don't play games#(they never play cards btw. lx never suggests it and ltc doesn't bring it up)#(i need S3 to have the equivalent of ql showing up one day with a deck of cards and ltc loses it lol)#lx notes#xiaochen
