To love...

I’m sitting here at my laptop listening to the snores of my husband and thinking about how he always tells me that his goal in our marriage is to love me as Christ loved the church. And it hits me, as I begin to think about my own perceived shortcomings, how truly Christ loves His church. But first let me say that I’m speaking of the church as a whole, not your church, my church, the church on the corner, or the one down the street-THE church-all of us. Now let me give you some similarities...

1.) Moodiness-now come on ladies we all know we can be a little moody at times. But let’s look at the church...is this not why we have so many denominations and so much “church hopping”? 

“Well Sister So N So didn’t shake my hand so I think I’m just going to look for another church. You know I’ve been going back and forth on whether I should leave anyways.” says Sister Bertha Better Than You

Here’s what God’s Word says, “Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won't be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth.” Ephesians 4:14

2.) Sleeps too much-I will be the first to tell you that I like my sleep but that’s neither here nor there. Again let’s talk about the church. How often is it we account for “my 4 and no more” and are content in complacency, never bothering to move outside the walls of the church and get into the need of our cities? We pass out a flyer or 2 and wait for the lost to come to us. The Bible says to go INTO ALL the WORLD and COMPEL them to come in. It doesn’t say go hand them a piece of paper then go back to church to wait on them to come to you. 

“For the leaders of my people--the LORD's watchmen, his shepherds--are blind and ignorant. They are like silent watchdogs that give no warning when danger comes. They love to lie around, sleeping and dreaming.” Isaiah 56:10

3.) Doesn’t clean house-I have been reading so many complaints lately about how the church is contemptible because there’s such sexual immorality rampant nowadays IN GOD’S HOUSE!  Now before anyone can say this, let me say yes I lived with my husband before we were married. Yes it was wrong. Absolutely. I will never lie and say it was right or try to excuse it in any way. It was wrong, bottom line. I’m sure some may try to sugarcoat it or may try to sweep it under the rug so that’s why I’m saying first and foremost it wasn’t right, no excuses. We, as the church, need to realize there is fine line between loving the lost/trying to reach the lost and becoming the lost. I know that’s not popular but I can say it because I’ve lived it. Yes we’ve repented for wrong doing and yes we’ve now made it right but what if Jesus had come for His unblemished bride and we had been the furthest thing from unblemished? Yes we all fall. Yes we all sin. We are to repent and die DAILY. Die to that sin that so easily ensnares us. Die to that temptation that calls our name in the wee hours of the morning. Church we CAN show the love of Christ and be His hands and feet without leaving a stain on God’s house.We can reach others more by telling them we’ve been where they are and if God can get us out, He can surely get them out too. You can pull the lost and dying world from the mud and muck without getting pulled in.  

“Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.” Hebrews 9:14

Now with all that said, think about the first verse I mentioned. Husbands love your wives as Christ loves the church...if my husband can see 1 or 2 or heck maybe even all 3 of these in me and still love me and would lay his life down for me, how much more does it make me want to strive to be a better wife to him? To be someone he can be proud to call his? Now look at it from Jesus’s view...as wrecked as we are as the church, He still loves us and DID lay His life down for ours. Shouldn’t we also so strive to be His unblemished bride and someone He is proud to call His?

“Jesus was not safe, at all,” McMillan says. “I’ve been in church my whole life and I’ve been a Christian a long time and I’ve always had a difficult time connecting with the expression of the Church. That’s really why I started writing music, I think, because I needed to be able to say those kinds of things.

After all, the Book of Isaiah reminds us that all of our righteousness is like filthy rags. What God wants is a person’s whole heart - the whole nasty thing.
