Thanks to everyone who help me decide in the previous post, I’m sending free t-shirts to those who commented on day-1. I’ll DM codes to use on our website. Another new t-shirt inspired by my work from the 80s. February 15, 1984, I was making denim with metal knee pads & other decorations, so I called my first brand Hardwear by Maurice Malone. As a teen, I stonewashed clothing by hand in a concrete tub in our basement. I’d fill it with hot water, bleach and detergent, then used large pumice stones to rub the denim. The smell of the bleach was so strong I had to do this holding my breath, and dart in & out of the room for air. I wore away my finger prints – the tips of my fingers burned after each wash. I’d anger my mom by washing jeans with pumice stones in her new washing machine while she was away at working in the auto plants downtown My dad, his friends & high schoolmates put up money to buy my first industrial sewing machines. #mauricemalone #mojeans #denimdesigners #mystory #detroit #howistarted #denimdesigner #mauricemalonehardwear #denim #jeans #denimstories #denimstory #blackstories #denim #jeans #denimstories #denimstory #streetweardesigner #80s #80sfashion #80sdenim #denimbeginnings #blackdesigners #blackbrands #blackownedclothing #streetweardesigner #80s #80sfashion #80sdenim (at Maurice Malone - Fashion Designer) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBYSRTLpEu4/?igshid=1i5jb1hsk2vtf

Wanted to share this challenge on my Tumblr so have a few backed up posts from a few days ago...
🔸Day 2🔸 "How you started" of #marchmeetthemaker
Took me awhile to figure out a point in my life that represents this step but I feel like my first drawing after graduating from Art School works pretty well.
Like many people after finishing uni, I was a bit stuck as to what to do next. I had graduated with an Hons Degree in Three Dimensional Design (Glass, Ceramics and Jewellery) but found that I had greatly missed drawing during most of my time there. So I decided to start from the beginning with simple animal portrait drawings. I've always loved birds and would spend a lot of time watching them from my bedroom window.
I then started collecting natural curiosities and would make studies of them, exploring through pen and fineliner. From there, I rediscovered my love for drawing and it kick-started my drive to grow a portfolio which then later led to me holding my first solo exhibition. From the positive feedback I received, I decided to try starting up an Etsy shop late last year and I've been enjoying the steady growth ever since. ☺️

My story. What brought me to Digital Marketing?
How did I start?
When I was a kid my dream was to become an inventor. I wanted to create something that would impact people life (Digital marketing didn’t exist yet ha)
I’ve changed 4 schools, then 3 universities, end up learning Product Design in a British High School of Art & Design.
I’ve tried many jobs, first was selling ‘semi-real’ discount cards for gas stations, then sticking illegal ads in metro; I’ve worked in a big pro-government company (run away after realizing the reality), car wash, sales, restaurants.
Cooking was my passion (well, I still love to cook for my family and friends), I liked those moments when a waiter came back to the kitchen and said the guests asked to repeat the order. Means I nailed it. Problem was - I've never seen for whom I was cooking. I wanted to help real people, so I decided I’ll start my restaurant one day.
5 years from now, I moved from Russia to Georgia as it seems more freedom for an individual, transparent business atmosphere - no corruption/racket from the state.
I saw an opportunity: by 2015 there were no real burgers on the market at an affordable price. Georgians may be conservative in what they eat, but I know for sure, they love good meat. With my ex-wife we started a burger food-truck, after about a year it got great reputation within the expat community and I start thinking to shift for a brick and mortar.
After asking all my best friends (who consist of my customers) I’ve found an investor, Marine Capitan from Texas, who became my first business partner and invested $10k+ into a venue.
We did all mistakes possible, get tons of experience, spent a great 2 years and closed a restaurant.
Tumblr media
Our product was the best in the city, the customers were our fans, but the business wasn't profitable. We decide to take part. And we still have good relationships with my partner.
After few more tries, I’ve couped with a group of two food enthusiasts, we rented just-closed pizza place, designed a new branding, identity, the story, new menu and using our experience we quickly turned it to a popular meeting point.
But I wanted to change something with my life. I wanted more freedom, taking risks and knowing I’ll never stay inactive. After just 2 months I’ve sold my shares and invested in education, I was learning sales and web design.
Completed my first projects and realize I can live my dream life, travel, to live wherever I want and still help people. After I’ve done a few more projects, I found out that some clients still see me as ‘order-taker’, which was my own fault. My positioning was too vague, “I do it all” mentality was working against me. I didn’t want to became ‘fix this’ guy and wanted to solve real problems, be a practitioner.
I started to find answers in books, pro-business forums, further learning and applying this knowledge in practice.
That’s how I decided to make a shift, narrow down my focus to a catering niche, where I have skin in the game, a better understanding of potential problems that business owner may be facing and become a Digital Marketing Expert.
One of the insights that changed the way I work is this:
“While it is common practice on the creative professions to prescribe solutions without fully and accurately diagnosing the problem, in almost every other profession such a sequence would render the professional liable for malpractice.” - Blair Enns,
Before prescribing any solutions, or accepting a client’s self-diagnosis it’s important and necessary to make sure we got to the core needs and understand the real challenges in front of a client.
That is the reason I have the system of diagnostic interactions in place. The process where we start with a set of some deep questions to uncover the roots, something beyond “I need a new website”. This way allows me to come up with better quality solutions which result in a tailored ‘tools’ - the outcomes.

I’m learning something new every day and I’m going to share my journey with you.
It’s going to be fun, I’m not going to post only success stories but my fails as well. Because to fail means to move forward, this is something I understand myself.
Take action. Gee.

#marchmeetthemaker Prompt #2 is #howistarted ——- I don’t have any photos of my first pieces but this piece is from 11 years ago when I was early in my pottery days. My first pottery class was with @thirstyallyn at RISD while I was studying for my BFA in Textiles. I immediately fell in love with making functional pots and continued with an independent study with Larry Bush who was the head of the ceramics department at the time. After college I worked in the textile industry in NYC for several years before working out my next steps to diving deeper into making pots more seriously. #clay #ceramics #risd #pottery #textiles #shino #ergonomics #cups #tea https://www.instagram.com/p/Bup6Kc9gpMt/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1pb01dcx7bl2b

Day 9- learning curve. I was just talking with @cor.nu.co.pi.a the other day that for some reason when I started out I thought I needed exclusively thank you cards. I made about 16 styles of thank you cards AND THAT’S IT!!! I have no idea what my reasoning was for this decision but I was very firm and proud in my exclusive thank you card line! I made many mistakes along the way from using a way too expensive print company to printing hundreds of thank you cards that no one knew about yet, to not building my own website sooner, to trying to use a not so great home printer. But through my learning curve I have come out all the better for it, expanding my product line further than you know... Thank you cards 😂 , using my website properly, learning how to source materials, how to approach retailers, that it’s essential to have a label printer. All the good stuff! I may not have grown as fast as some, but I am growing and continuing to learn every day. 🧡🧡 • • • #marchmeetthemaker #thankyoucards #learneveryday #learningcurve #howistarted #behindthebrand #championgreen #ipadillustration #ipaddoodles #procreatedrawing #meetthemaker #whativelearned #greetingcardbusiness (at Portobello, Dublin) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMNwzvPHLOG/?igshid=15jlrkangsr8r

Day 1 of #marchmeetthemaker. Story: So I'm not actually sure where to start with this as I've been drawing, painting and making things my whole life. I went to college and then uni studying textiles and when graduated went traveling, the usual stuff. I got an office job as a civil servant that was that, meet my husband and settled down. Move on 12ish years and while trying for our first child I decided to start trying to sell some of my makes, well I got as far as deciding on a name and opening a shop on etsy. Who figured it would take all your time looking after a baby. 😂 A year later we tried for baby number 2 and while on maternity with my second son decided that it felt right, now was the time to start selling the things I enjoyed making. So here I am, I started officially September last year and I haven't looked back. My photos are of my two little ones. @joannehawker #storytime #story #howistarted #smallbusiness #girlboss #workingmum #craftlove #craftersofinstagram #workinghard #devoncrafts #devonartist #thetwistedkitty #handmade #craft https://www.instagram.com/p/B9M_eO7FLqN/?igshid=1syz34wroo0iu

#throwback to my very first ultra! 50km in the Chilterns with @extremeenergyuk in July 2017. . I ran the London Marathon, my very first long distance event, in April that same year. The day after the marathon, Dean Karnazes (@ultramarathon) came to our office to talk about his book, The Road to Sparta. I was entranced, filled with wonder about this world where people run marathons before breakfast. I was also very possibly still riding the runner's high from the day before. . They were generously giving away copies of his book, so I went up to him to get my copy signed. We were chatting away and for some reason still unknown to me, I blurted "You're so cool, Dean! I wanna run like you. I wanna run an ultramarathon, too!" Dean smiles at me, possibly pleased by the prospect that he's converted someone to the dark side and said, "Why not? Just go and sign up for one!" . And now here we are. Thanks, Dean! 😁 . #ultramarathon #tbt #howistarted https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxg2mUXgp5u/?igshid=i54rcz1acxvx

Day 2: How I Started I got my start making jewelry in this building, while studying art at @ecusoad. I didn't plan to study metal design but signed up for a class after one of my professors suggested I give it a try. I didn't think it would be for me but I immediately fell in love with the medium. #meetthemaker #meetthemaker2019 #meettheartist #stockablmaker #howistarted #ecu #jenkinsfineartscenter https://www.instagram.com/p/BuhtyE7HRZs/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ficg8lt90mlq

Day 2 #Marchmeetthemaker2019: How you started?⁣ ⁣ I've been making and creating and teaching and living the arts for most of my life. However, when I moved to Chicago in 2014 I stepped into my desire to be a full-time artist with two feet. I had a group exhibition @thearthousegallery after completing a studio intensive, which is where I am in this photo. That intensive helped me find my visual voice and jumpstarted my belief that I could really do this.⁣ ⁣ Obviously there have been a lot of ups and downs since then, and I've drifted in and out of various art forms and commitments, but I'm happy with where my path has lead me today.⁣ ⁣ #memorylane #howIstarted #meetkhiri⁣ ⁣ https://www.instagram.com/p/BuhEjHkH2KE/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=v4c9tou1qs9i

▪️H O W I S T A R T E D▪️ Day 2 of @joannehawker #meetthemaker and it is how I started... I got married almost 2 years ago and I looked around for ages for wedding ideas. I was a pinterest queen, but I just couldn't find what I was looking for! So I decided to make things myself from wedding place names, card postbox, table names and our cake topper (swipe across to take a look). I had so many people asking where I got them from that I thought 'why not make them for others!'. I already had @rowan.and.fox as a business name so I was good to go, and the rest is history! . . . #marchmeetthemaker #meetthemakerdayone #howistarted #WeddingGuestBook #woodenguestbook #personalisedguestbook #weddingideas #weddingseason #weddingideas_brides #weddinginspo2019 #weddinginspo #bridetobe #engaged #groominspiration #shopsmall #shopsmalllove #supportsmallbusiness #creativehappylife #inspiration #scandinavian #followforfollow #fairytale #fairytalewedding #onetruelove #meetthemakers #meetthemakerchallenge #meetthemakermarch #meetthemakermonth #everyoneshinetogether (at Newcastle upon Tyne) https://www.instagram.com/p/BugWcslFkpV/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1pu745lka7qq6

Day 3. HOW I STARTED. I have been repurposing before I even knew what it meant. I became a single mum when my kids were 3 and 4 and money was tight!! So I had to find ways of entertaining the children that didn’t cost an arm and a leg. We made Valentines Cards out of rice, flowers out of egg boxes and spaceships out of cereal boxes (it was all very Blue Peter) which sparked an interest in finding new life in old things, from furniture to fabrics. I tried many, many different crafts and started making bottle lights in 2012 for my lovely friends wedding centrepieces. We used candles (much to the disgust of the venue) as the only other option at that time was fairy lights with big bulky battery packs. Technology has moved on since then and the lights we use now are so discreet people often can’t even find the battery pack #marchmeetthemaker #meetthemaker #bottlelights #weddingtable #weddingcentrepiece #bottlelamp #reuse #repurpose #reducewaste #wastenotwantnot #trashtotreasure #smallbusinessowner #cottageindustry #howistarted #mybusiness #mysmallbiz #mysmallbusiness
