Empty Movement's 2023 Revolutionary Girl Utena UPDATE

Fashionably late? As always. 2023 was a HUGE year for Empty Movement, so much so that to confess, we did a big fail in actually keeping up with sharing the stuff we did! OOPS. So finally, we proudly bring you: all the Revolutionary Girl Utena content we dropped in 2023. Essays, artbooks, CD information, you name it. Click below for the entire site update, or get it at the source, as always, at ohtori.nu.
In Analysis (Fan Essays): â˘Â seebee's essay The Power of Living an Embodying Narrative is about more than Utena, it's about the fandom--including us. We were both interviewed for this piece, and the result is an absolutely beautiful essay that has helped inform how we do Utena stuff going forward. Thank you so much for letting us be part of this! â˘Â seebee's VIDEO essay FILM CUTS BACK | transfeminism in utena absolutely blew our minds and it's so good we're listing it. Look at the title. Just go watch it, it rules. â˘Â Nicole Winchester's essay No Choice But To Become Witches: The BishĹjo-Demonic Phallic Mother Dichotomy in Revolutionary Girl Utena catches you up to speed on the academic discussion around what might best be described as the shoujo manga iteration of the Madonna-Whore complex. Then, naturally, it finds plenty to say about Utena. Great work that was well worth the coding!
------------
In From the Mouths of Babes (Translated Meta/Creator Content): â˘Â Cross X Talk, A Round Table Discussion Commemorating the Second Musical Utena GOGAI FUCKIN' GOGAI. Nagumo and friends bring us the final untranslated part of the 2019 Black Rose Musical's program guide: the monster interview with Ikuhara and the director of the musicals, Yoshitani. INCREDIBLE content here that 100% lives up to the first musical's similar encounter! A must read!! â˘Â The Rose Apocalypse's Ei Takatori Interview The director of the mysterious 1999 musical (yes the machine gun one, and YES WE HAVE MORE INFORMATION ABOUT IT COMING) interviewed in The Rose Apocalypse book. This...is that. Thank you so much to iris hahn for translating, and I can't wait to bring you more of this mythology!!! â˘Â The Utena Dossier Animage Magazine's June 1997 supplemental, this 36-page Utena tome has ben translated by Nagumo with editing by Ayu Ohseki. Because so much of the content is in its visual presentation, I worked the translation into the original scans! Check it out! (PS. Yes that is an entirely different gallery on the emptymovement.com domain, no this won't stay there, yes it has been a weird couple years.) The Dossier includes two long interviews that are also worked into html pages for easy viewing! The Auspicious Joining of Manga and Anime: Saito and Hasegawa For Whom the Director Smiles: Ikuhara and Kitakubo
-------------
In Historia Arcana & The Bibliothèque (Untranslated Resources): ⢠There are a lot of changes happening in this arena!!! How and where to place different materials has been a moving target, so I'll do my best! The sites don't quite reflect this yet, but Historia Arcana will be for cover to cover Utena media, including special magazine publications. Something Eternal's gallery, the Bibliothèque, will be for magazine articles, clippings, and other things. Major artbooks will likely be in both places, cross referenced. New books in Historia Arcana: â˘Â The Rose Spiral: Reflections on the Mythology of Utena While not strictly official, this is a fan published book of in depth analysis of Utena, circa 1998! Yep, cover to cover. â˘Â Revolution Dictionary (OST 1 First Press Bonus) Cross-referenced from Audiology, this is the bonus dictionary you only got if you grabbed it early! Cool! â˘Â Revolutionary Girl Utena Making of Visuals Book Art of UTENA I am mentioning this for completions sake and because I already uploaded it, but this is a cover to cover high resolution, uncleaned scan of the 1999 Art of Utena artbook. I am going to clean the scans, and ultimately be posting the official artbooks elsewhere. â˘Â Revolutionary Girl Utena Photobook: Rose Memories This special Animage bonus could be purchased for 700 yen, and back then, was probably a great way to keep the anime in your pocket! It's entirely shots from the TV series, though, so there's nothing specifically new. But I scan it all, baby. New books in the Bibliothèque: â˘Â Chiho Saito's 1999 Revolutionary Girl Utena Original Illustration Collection HI THIS IS A VERY BIG DEAL. Read more about why when you visit! TLDR? Here's some of the best artwork of Utena, rescanned and remastered by yours truly to be the best big big scans of big big beautiful Chiho Saito Art. This is a feast. I even made myself a calendar! (Note that the price is such that I don't make a profit on these, so if you're looking to donate, definitely go by other routes, haha.) You will find multiple ways to obtain the scans, and in more than one size. Either way you soak up the rays, enjoy 'em! New articles and clips in the Bibliothèque: â˘Â H! Rockin' on Japan Magazine Saito X Oikawa This fashion music magazine's July 1999 article has ALREADY BEEN TRANSLATED? Like, I am going to add the translation officially to the site of course, but holy hell Nagumo is amazing!! This article is actually the origin of a Saito art piece that uh, well. Now we know she went to a love hotel with movie Akio's VA. Cool! Anyway check it out! â˘Â Comickers Magazine, August 1997 This absolute monster find is an industry-focused magazine with this gorgeous spread and interview with Chiho Saito. It gets into how she does things. The making of Utena. All kinds of stuff. I'd LOVE to know more about this one!! â˘Â Comickers Magazine, June 1998 Again, an industry-focused publication, this time it's exploring the manga and the anime and how they compare. Again looks like a tasty meal!! â˘Â Volks Magazine, Spring 2022 YEP SCANS OF THE BOOK OF THE DOLLFIES. For a lot of us, this is at close as we get to these ludicrously gorgeous dolls. I included a few extra pages because they were just fuckin' cool and felt relevant. â˘Â Sega Saturn Magazine, December 1997 One of two grabs I got recently on Yahoo! Japan! This appears to be the first look announcement of the 1998 Utena video game! (Yes we have more on it, yes we will eventually post links.) â˘Â Sega Saturn Magazine, April 1998 This feature brings attention to the voice actors, who are all returning for the game! ⢠Dengeki G's Magazine, January 1998 Another gaming focused magazine, with frankly a more adult edge, cheaply lets the readers know about Utena. These three game magazine moments are just a bizarre reminder of how we did things before the internet, LMAO
---------------
In Audiology (Music and CD Information): ⢠Complete information about the STAR CHILD - Girls Character Song Best album! You also definitely can't grab the two new remix tracks there. â˘Â Did you know there was a first press bonus dictionary for the first OST? I DIDN'T UNTIL RECENTLY. Now I know all about it, and so can you. Check it out! Obviously, scans available, both here and in Historia Arcana. â˘Â I FINALLY acquired a complete set of the Utena CD singles!! Check out complete track lists, scans, and information for ALL FIVE Utena singles. Yes. Including the movie Akio guy's one.
----------------
In The Doujinshi Gallery: â˘Â Several dozen dounjinshi were uploaded earlier in the year, and can be found listed on the Site Update archive here.
---------------
That's all for now, folks! There's so so so much coming. I have the episode 18 and 20 (!!!!) storyboards to scan, as well as a fully translated scanlation of The Duelist Bible. We're planning to do something for Anthy's rare LEAP YEAR birthday coming up, probably a musical stream or something! Love!

There is something very weird about the relatively short nature of the culture surrounding website creation. As in, like, internet-user-created websites have been around for like 30-31 years at this point, and the culture surrounding them has changed so very much.
People used to create websites left and right for their own needs, their little shops and their little blogs about what they liked. Some websites of course housing horrible content since their dawn, and some being as mundane but as unique as the person behind its code. I have seen older sites, archived, that promoted creating your own site, and that was interesting to see. That culture of creating your own website and of sharing that knowledge on a still-growing facet of communication.
And then at some point social media appeared, and that was interesting, because now everyone was able to quickly present themselves without the need of a website, but that didn't mean people stopped making websites. I mean, hell, Geocities died in 2009, so a lot of people were creating their own websites for free before that time, no need to pay for domain names or hosting. And even without Geocities, there were other website hosting things that yes, while not as customizable, were still a resource for people to work with them. There's still a website floating around that I made when I was a kid using one of these services. Cool stuff.
All this to say that I do feel a weird sense of dread looking back and cross-referencing with the present and seeing things like "website creator powered by AI" and shit like that, because just ?? How did it go plummeting so quickly. There is a weird feeling of having lost a developing culture to corporations making quick access to posting things that, as corporations' nature dictates, are used to sell data or to train models or what have you. Similarly, we get pretty same-y looking pages because of the need to be slick or whatever with designs that just leaves everything looking the same. ALSO, the loss of spaces for kids, or just the gradual lowering of them in favor of cocomelons and whatever else the devil's machine has spawned is like watching an apple decay before having ripened. I do feel like there is this phenomenon in which how to make a site has been lost in the notion of "making a website falls into the realm of evil and scary coding and I could never be a programmer, plus who would look at it, plus we have tools to make them," etc etc etc. Here is a little secret: website creation is not exactly hard to pick up at all. You might say it's very similar to using a rich text editor like Word or a notes app or whatever you use. Similarly, have you used markdown for things like messages or D iscord messages, you know, with the asterisks for bold text and the likes? Markdown is based on html's structures. And truly, you do not have to even learn to code using Javascript if you don't want to, you can just go full html + css and structure your things as you go, adding your little images and your updates. Because guess what !! Html and css are not programming languages, they're a markup language and a stylesheet language respectively, which is a fancy way to say "you make the structure of your page with the first one and make it pretty with the second one". This includes cool stuff like tables, lists, grids, colors, transitions, etc. All of that without any programming. (That being said, if you are interested in programming, Javascript isn't too bad to pick up. The language itself *is* kind of evil, but using it in conjunction with html is not too difficult). I do have to say though, I am glad that there is a push to making your own websites and things, especially with Neocities sprawling a huge community of avid website creators, as well as the huge amount of tutorials and stuff making the push forward with making sites and online spaces and experiences more widely available. Hopefully this becomes a trend that keeps going up, considering the state of seemingly every single social media that has existed since the 2000s- 2010s.

Warhammer 40,000 Balance Update for October 16, 2024 - Munitorum Field Manual and Errata for Xenos Factions
After writing, I decided to split this document up into the super factions for ease of use. I've also changed how I format rules changes. Let me know what you think! Is this more readable, would you prefer a single post, or should I do a post for each faction?
Edit: The color coding for points changes breaks every time I edit it. To fix it, I have to go into the HTML and correct where it's marking things. I just don't have the spoons for manually correcting that much text.
Aeldari
Form their lofty perch, Aeldari have gotten to a point where they could use some love. While their win rate is near spot on, they're having trouble making it to top tables. And the players that are, usually run Ynnari. But will GW give them much of anything or let them ride until their Codex comes out?
Here we run into another issue. The changes are being made directly to the Index. This is good. GW should definitely do this. But do they tell us what's changed anywhere? Answer, they've put it in the document for the Index Cards. It's important they put it somewhere, but I really wish they had it spelled out somewhere where the changes are listed.
So what's changed? The standard Autarch now has the basic Captain ability as detailed in the last Balance Dataslate. That's an important change to have listed finally. For FAQ, we get another common sense answer for Wraith Guard and clarification on how to properly position a jumping Yncarne.
All Corsairs: -2 pts/model Falcon: -10 pts Fire Prism: -10 pts Shining Spears: -10 pts/3 models Warlock Conclave: -5 pts/2 models Warlock Skyrunner Conclave: -5 pts/model Wave Serpent: -10 pts Wraithblades (5 models): -10 pts Wraithguard (5 models): -10 pts Wraithknight: -15 pts
As for the points, it's all good news! GW really is getting much better at understanding what's going on in the game! The important stuff here are the buffs to vehicles and Wraith constructs. I don't know if this brings Wraithknights back to the table, but small groups of Wraithguard might be worth taking again. I'm not sure these changes will convince anyone to bring a Conclave on foot though. All of this is good news for Eldar players!
Drukhari
The article warned that nerfs are incoming. Still I hope they only get a love tap. Their rankings are greatly bolstered by skilled faction specialists. No one is currently running out and buying up Drukhari models because the faction is good. Granted if GW successfully brings down the factions above them, there might be an issue. But I hope they don't go beyond a love tap.
For Errata, the Archon is specified as having its own ability, not Lord of Deceit. I don't think there's anything Drukhari can take to stack with it, so that shouldn't be an issue. My guess is the team is considering changing Lord of Deceit in some way. It is really strong. So this makes sure that change doesn't affect Archons. They also get a couple more clarifications for Pain Parasite, but there's nothing unusual here.
Archon: +10 pts Beastmaster: +15 pts Court of the Archon: +10 pts Drazhar +10 pts Hellions: -2 pts/model Incubi: +2 pts/model Lelith Hesperax: +10 pts Mandrakes (5 models): +5 pts Reavers (3 models): +5 pts
Yeah there's a lot there. I think that's a whole unit gone from many Drukhari lists. We also see that GW is continuing to recognize that some MSU spam is just really good. This really is a good thing, and may be slowly turning me around on purchasing units in bricks. But it sucks when you're already really nerfing an army.
Drukhari could be hurting.
Genestealer Cults
I'm about to say something that might shock some of you. I honestly don't think GSC is doing that badly. They've actually got solid numbers, though this come from the fact they're a niche faction with skilled specialists. But I think that's okay. I think it's okay for some factions to be there for the fans and require a little skill to play. It's very obvious that while GSC can struggle in match ups, you can get results with them. What they mostly need is internal balance, and I think that will come to rules.
For errata and FAQ we get a revision that makes sure you take a GSC model as your Warlord in the Brood Brothers detachment. We get a common play clarification for Tunnel Crawlers, but a very interesting clarification for Brood Brother Kasrkin. Despite not having the Voice of Command Army Rule, Kasrkin can still give themselves orders. That makes them a much more powerful and versatile unit in the Brood Brothers detachment. Still not sure that's enough to make that detachment even close to good, but it's interesting at least.
Abberants (5 models): -15 pts All Acolyte Hybrids: -1 pts/model Acolyte Iconward: -10 pts Atalan Jackals: -2 pts/model Benefictus: -10 pts Jackal Alphus: -5 pts Neophyte Hybrids: -5 pts/10 models Patriarch: -10 pts Primus: -10 pts Outlander Claw: - Serpentine Tactics: -5 pts
Oh boy! Christmas just came early for my cults! Still, I'm actually going to say these aren't the best changes. A lot of these changes benefit Outlander Claw, the Mad Max style detachment. And that is currently the best GSC detachment and my personal favorite. While the other detachments will love these changes too, I'm worried that Outlander is going to become the only way to play GSC. There's already a Wolf Jail like list running around the scene, and no one likes dealing with that list. The only good news is I doubt this is going to bring a huge flood of players to the faction spamming toxic bike lists. So while GSC isn't going to become a problem, it's only going to be a rare problem list that will frustrate players now and then.
Leagues of Votann
The Kin are another force that looks good from win rates but is actually struggling quite a bit. Like Death Guard, the Leagues struggle to secure the points they need at mid boards and up. This will hopefully get better if GW continues to get them new units, as their roster is still quite small. But for now, points aren't really the answer here.
FAQ wise we only get a timing clarification for Grudge tokens. And points don't have much either.
Einhyr Hearthguard (5 models): -10 pts Hernkyn Yaegirs: +10 pts
Okay. Yaegirs probably did need to go up, but I'm not sure this was the time for it. With so many other factions that are performing better getting all buffs, this is bad news for the Kin.
Necrons
After a brief stint as our metal overlords, Necrons have shifted to a pretty good spot. The main thing they need is some internal balance for their Detachments, and I don't think points will do that. Hypercrypt is just such a strong way to play the faction. Nerfing the models in the Hypercrypt builds threatens to drop Necrons too low. I think maybe only the Monolith can take a nerf without too much interference.
For Errata we start out with some Keyword fixes. Obeisance now benefits all Nobles and not just Overlords. And the Silent King is now officially part of the Triarch! However Plasmancers have had their ability to target Lone Operatives removed. So it's not all good news there. The FAQs are just common play clarifications too.
Annihilation Barge: -10 pts Catacomb Command Barge: -10 pts Deathmarks: +1 pts/model Doomsday Arc: -10 pts Lokhust Destroyers (1 model): +5 pts Lokhust Heavy Destroyers: +5 pts/model Monolith: +25 pts Obelisk: -25 pts Tesseract Vault: +25 pts Triarch Praetorians: -4 pts/model Triarch Stalker: -15 pts
That's a lot of shifting things around, and it's going to take me a moment to dissect it. As predicted, they bumped up the Monolith and Tesseract Vault with it, though I don't think many players were taking the latter or that it could be used as substitute. The dropped the cost on the Obelisk, but I don't think anyone's gonna try it out. Points aren't the problem there. My biggest problem here is Destroyers. While Hypercrypt did often take them, so did all the struggling detachments as well. And while faction specialists are going to experiment, I don't think these changes are enough to make Obeisance Phalanx really viable.
Things could be getting bumpy again for the Necrons.
Orks
As was said earlier, Orks are not in a good spot. While the nerfs they took didn't seem all that severe, they turned out to be nerfs to pillars that were holding the faction up. Since then, Orks have fallen hard and are the worst faction that has actual rules or isn't competing for its own players. And they're likely going to need a lot to rise back up.
The first big change is a clarification change to many rules that might help with some timing issues and future proofing. All or most rules active when you call the Waaagh now read they are active while the Waaagh is active for your army. This means if they change the timing on calling the Waaagh, as many Ork players would like, you wouldn't lose these buffs during your opponent's turn if you went second. While this looks like it might be nerf to Bully Boyz, the FAQ specifies that their abilities still work. We also get an FAQ the clarifies that when Snikrot uses Kunnin' Infiltrator, he doesn't count as moving for the purpose of Fire Overwatch. Though, he does still count as being setup on the board when he comes back down for the same stratagem.
Beast Snagga Boyz: -1 pts/model All Big Meks: -10 pts Boyz: -5 pts/10 models Deff Dread: -10 pts Deff Koptas: -10 pts/3 Gorkanaut: -15 pts Hunta Rig: -15 pts Kill Rig: -15 pts Kommandos: -15 pts Meganobz: -5 pts/model Morkanaut: -15 pts Tankbustas: -20 pts
And that is a lot of green, and a lot more green you can put on your table! As expected, Meganobz got some of their nerf rolled back. But a lot of boyz, including the popular Beast Snaggas, got buffs. Also, at some point the Gorkanaut and Morkanaut have to become playable as just a pile of wounds and guns on the table.
This is not going to make Orks into one of the top factions, but it should go a long way to getting them back where they should be.
T'au Empire
Tau are in what I'd call an okay spot. They're not where they need to be, but they're not doing that bad. They're performing just slightly above par, and only one of their detachments is struggling. They're what I would consider a textbook example of an army that shouldn't be receiving any external balance passes, so that they can rise up to where they should be when the meta changes. Internally, Kroot need help. But I'm not sure points can fix that.
The big fix here is to the Puretide Engram, which I think has been broken since the Codex came out? It now does something, letting you get a CP back on 4+ when you target the bearer's unit with a Stratagem. The new FAQs start by clarifiying that Crisis Suits always have a Pivot of 0" regardless of how you model them. Then we get two clarifications that, while they are how the rules work, are doubtless going to feel bad to Kroot players.
Commander Farsight: -10 pts Kroot Carnivores: -1 pts/model All Kroot Shaper: -10 pts/model Kroot Rampagers: -5 pts/model Krootox Rider (1 model): +5 pts Piranhas: +5 pts/model Riptide Battlesuit: +10pts
It looks like they're trying to do some internal balance, and at least help Kroot somewhat. But I don't think this is anything close to enough to make them viable. I don't think the other changes are going to affect Tau much, though we might see Farsight a bit more.
Tyranids
My beloved bugs have really turned it around with the Pariah Nexus changes. Despite losing Spore Mines, the changes to Synapse and Shadow in the Warp means we can actually get some damage now. That means we aren't always on the losing end of trading games. Neurotyrant with Zoanthropes also make for a fun and interesting tech piece. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them take nerfs, as well as the Swarmlord. Unnending Swarm could use some love though.
For errata, Surprise Assault gets some cleanup for timing and targeting. The Swarmlord gets the same treatment as Cypher, the Archon, and Ventris got, meaning it will keep its version of Lord of Deceit. Unseen Lurkers has been updated to the rules changes on Stratagems preventing your units from being targeted. Hunting Grounds, and all rules that trigger when a unit arrives from reserves, are clarified to trigger when a unit didn't go to reserves but was set back up on the battlefield. Rules that say "cannot arrive" on the battlefield during a turn take precedent over units that "must arrive" on that turn. While it doesn't specify, I do believe they can still arrive the next turn under normal Strategic Reserve rules. All the rest I believe are common play, though I was initially confused by the Neurogaunt/Neuroloid answer. But Neurogaunts specifically say that they have to be within range of a friendly model.
Carnifexes: -10 pts/model Lictor: +5 pts Old One Eye: +10 pts Pyrovores (1 model): +5 pts Von Ryan's Leapers: -5 pts/3 models Winged Hive Tyrant: -10 pts
This all seems fair to me. Carnifixes on their own got cheaper while Old One Eye got more expensive. The full unit still dropped in cost though. Pyrovores continues a trend as to how much GW wants you to pay for a single unit. And the Lictor has honestly been under-costed for a while.
I'm happy with this. I think we'll be just fine.
Final Thoughts
And with that, we have our balance changes for October! Space Marine players of all stripes aren't going to be too happy. Even Dark Angels, who initially thought would do well, will hate the base points changes in the Codex. Only Space Wolves . . . you know . . . THE ARMY THAT NEEDED NERFED THE MOST!!! . . . will be fine with these changes. Dedicated Ultramarines players will likely get something to work though, now that their Primarch is back in play. Sisters and Thousand Sons are in for a drop. Sisters probably won't drop too far, but, and I know I said this last time, I'm worried about KSons. Drukhari are really going to be hurting, though I'm sure Archon Skari will still find a way to win. I'm also worried about Leagues of Votann, Necrons, and World Eaters too.
Orks are looking like they'll start to rise again, but I don't think they're a top faction. CSM and GSC might be in a position to fight for the top spot. Wolf Jail is dead! Long live Jackal Jail! I also think Aeldari might have a reversal of fortunes too. The rest of us will only shift by percentage points, which is exactly what you want when the balance is this tight.

I'm not sure how to make a proper summary. Tumblr doesn't seem to support html tables. And I don't know how to show all the necessary information concisely and without just repeating what's in the posts themselves. And then a circle/tunnel shape to represent the radius? Anyways I don't have that ready for this month. So, here's just a list of all the digging showcase posts from March with hyperlinks to them.

Alternatively, here's my archive.

So That Guy demanded Son look up coding languages etc. in a non-teaching, non-leadership kind of way and Son was reading off the list to him yesterday.
Son said "CSS" and That guy goes "I don't know what that is." That Guy still thinks all websites are programed with HTML.
And I'm just like..... "Here *inspect element* that's CSS. It's similar to and uses a lot of elements of HTML. That's how most websites are built these days. "
He does not like when I know something he doesn't, so much so that he did this yesterday where he came home, asked me to unlock my phone without asking questions, set it on the table, go into Signal, and show him the settings. He still refuses to tell me what that was about, but knowing him and his particular style of paranoia, I'm guessing he wanted to make sure I had "Share contacts with IOS" set to off. He refuses to explain, though. It gives him something to know that I don't.
If you're going to give an assignment to someone, you ought to also know the information? But also, I very much dislike how he's all demanding and condescending all of the time when his own education about the subject he's trying to airquotes"teach"airquotes is sub standard.

Update on the learning to code thing: at first I was using Mimo, for nearly the past 2 months actually, and I decided to get a second app yesterday, Sololearn, and have been working with W3schools as well (I have also been considering CodĂŠdex, just because it looks fun, and the Odin project when I get more confidence because it looks intense) So I can "study from different angles" so to speak, in my head if I study one thing multiple ways it stays for longer. And anyways, I found out that Mimo wasn't teaching a shit tone of stuff!!! With html alone there where so manny gaps between what it was teaching me and the questions it would ask me (for example it didn't tech me what a div was (I googled it) but it asked me a question about styling a div in the css section, and it didnât show me haw to make a table or lists either, it did teach me lists but not until I was already aslo learning Java (if I remember correctly)).
I still think Mimo is good, I did some further digging on places like Reddit and several of those sites where they rate different educational apps, and Mimo still does pretty good! Unfortunately, I like knowing all the stuff about what I'm learning and implied learning (where it teaches you a thing by asking you questions about the thing) isn't for me. I need information first, then repetition to really let it sink in (and again, I need to see things in multiple ways). It's why with Duolingo, I've been moving at a snails pace, learning pretty much anything. Duo does better with its format than Mimo (in my opinion) because with it's "implied" learning your allowed to tap/click on what you don't know and read what it is (or if it's a word that has multiple meanings you can read through those and get good idea). Duo also has these little section notes things that you can read through before you start a single lesson in the section, giving you the info before it asks you questions on the things. I don't think I can continue with Mimo personally, but I still think I'll recommend it for a start at the very least! I also think imma start recommending learning python early on as well, just because what little I know of it was so simple and easy to learn I think it makes a good jumping point and it's good for a lot of stuff!!!
On another note (related), ever since learning that I need the info before I'm questioned on it (I get too frustrated if I don't and it makes it hard for me too keep learning because I feel discouraged), I've figured out how to make learning a bit easier for me and I've been moving so much faster in my various studies (I say say pretentiously). I've also managed to order some textbooks for myself, both for coding and for my SATs! I'm very excited and I'm hoping I can keep this up, learning anything is hard and can get exhausting buy I'm hoping I can get better at all of this, I like this and wanna keep going!

Now that I've been on the other side of the table, I have some advice!
Do you have a friend or acquaintance who works at the company? Ask them to put in a word for you. The hiring manager will tell the recruiter to put you forward.
There are multiple assumptions here: the hiring manager has reason to trust the person who's already at the company: they know the culture, they know the team, and ultimately, they don't want to make their own job harder. A recommendation also means there's a built-in mentor who will make sure you get up to speed.
Don't know anyone? The magic words are just the things that prove you've done the job before.
Trying to get an admin role with a company that organizes events, but you've never worked for an event organizer? If you were responsible for organizing a couple major meetings at a past company, even if it was a minor duty, put it on your resume as a bullet point under that position.
The hiring manager wants to know the work isn't going to scare you away in a month. Someone who's been doing the same thing already knows what to expect. They're a safe hire because they've done the tasks that might intimidate someone else. Give them a reason to imagine you doing the tasks that need to be done.
Does the listing emphasize a personality trait or skill that seems unusual, but they haven't made it a requirement? They've probably been burned by a bad hire and just want to ensure it won't happen again.
They need someone to manage schedules, but require HTML? You'll probably be sending emails with custom HTML that someone else created, and they want to make sure they don't hire someone whose eyes will glaze over or someone who will panic when they see it come through.
That type of person likely won't take to the job, and will create problems that everyone else has to fix for them. If you've worked with custom HTML emails, add it as a bullet point. Doesn't matter if you can write your own; you can ask about it in the interview and they'll let you know the context. That gives you a chance to figure out if it's a requirement you can meet or not.
Other odd skills probably have a similar rationale.
This one sucks because it's really not for everyone, but it has to be mentioned: if you're able to, freelance. Preferably with the help of an agency who will get you gigs at multiple companies. Why?
When you apply for a permanent role, there are a few things in your favor. If the client likes your work, they're going to ask you to apply for the opening. That means you're guaranteed an interview. It also means it's going to be a very comfortable interview for you: they know you, they like your work, and they want you to work with them. It's the best case scenario!
If they don't ask you to apply--maybe there are rules against soliciting your application--they're going to still give you an interview and treat you favorably. Why? A regular freelancer already knows the culture. Already provides work output that meets the company's standards. Already fits in with the team. Already commands some level of respect. It's an extremely safe hiring decision!
And if you're with an agency that helps you get gigs at multiple companies, eventually you'll have this same best case scenario across job listings from multiple companies.
What are the magic words at the interview? It really depends. But you need to remember: they're interviewing other people, too. It's not always enough to use the magic words. If 10 people all use the magic words, why are they going to hire you instead of one of your 9 clones?
Every one of them wants the company to "just take a chance, because I need it." Why should it be you over someone just like you? No one wants to pick the nice guy anymore, amiright? If everyone is nice, then "nice" isn't the feature that's going to get you selected.
Here's the thing about interviews: they already liked your qualifications. They're assessing a few things, and a major component of that is how you say things, as much as what you say.
They want to know you're going to be able to work with the team, without being a source of conflict. i.e. They're not going to hire you if you're just going to make everyone else's job harder; that's a risky hiring decision because it might make other people leave.
Some of that you have control over. Do you have a hobby that your peers at that company likely share? If you're applying for work at an AV company, it's a safe bet that your colleagues are going to be musicians and filmmakers. Find a reason to discuss the instrument you play; they'll start comparing you, positively, to the team.
Other things will be out of your control. They may have had a past employee who made everyone miserable, and they're looking to avoid the same traits and habits. You likely won't know what that is.
But be candid. You get all this advice about making the best impression and telling them what they want to hear. But it's going to work against you. If they can't trust their impression of you, you're a risky hire. If they're looking to avoid a trait and catch you lying to hide that you behave that way, you're not likely to get a second chance at the company.
Being candid doesn't mean oversharing, though. One applicant answered a question like this, "I think it would take some adjustment, and I might be a little hesitant at first, but I think I could enjoy working in that environment."
It was about a component of our workplace culture that strongly signifies success or failure in our environment. We hired this candidate over the one who pretended it's the ideal workplace culture for them. Because we were able to get a read on what their true feelings were and how much effort it would take to ensure they adjusted well.
Also, show some awareness of how the type of role you're applying to, is structured. Is it something that's almost exclusively collaborative, or something where you'll be working alone most of the time?
Demonstrate that you're accustomed to that kind of environment. You don't need to pretend to like it. You just need to convey that you'll get the job done, and that it's not going to have you looking for something new in a couple months.
Hiring someone who must work alone, for a collaborative role, is going to make it harder for the coworkers to do their jobs; it'll cause conflict, and most likely lead to more mistakes that need to be cleaned up. In this case, the person with less work experience but who excels in a collaborative environment is the more qualified candidate.
The more you can be aware of these nuances and address them, the more likely you are to be hired.
But there's still the factor of the other candidates. You don't know who they are. Do they have more experience than you? Did they work at this company before, and came back after a growth opportunity? Did they freelance with the team previously? Are they well known from a higher position and decided to take a step back?
You can't control any of that. But they're competing with you. You can nail the interview but if a superstar employee is coming back from a growth opportunity, they're probably getting the role.
But what you can control is how you present yourself. You know how to do the job, so you should be confident. You should show that you've given thought to how the role is structured, and ask questions about the day to day job. Even little things like, "the listing says I'll be supporting a VP. Will it be the same one, or will I be assisting a few on a rotating basis?" Just ask something.
Because you're supposed to interview the company back. You like working alone? Ask about the balance between solo and collaborative tasks. You prefer working a few hours during the day, and a couple at night when it's quiet? Ask if there will be opportunities to do that. Hated a particular task in a similar role? Ask how frequently you'll need to do it in the new role.
You're going to be perceived more positively if you're honestly trying to assess if the role is a good fit for you, as much as they're trying to determine if you're a good fit for the role. Because that really is your main job at an interview: figure out if you even want this job. If they're only judging you and not vice-versa, then you didn't have the great interview you thought you did.
And here's where you should be encouraged: if you actually nail the things that are important at an interview, you could be hired over someone with more experience. I was a panelist once, for a client-facing technical role.
We interviewed people who did similar roles, but none of them made us feel confident that we could put them in front of clients. The reasons varied. Personality. Couldn't convey complex technical ideas in layman's terms. Seemed combative. Etc.
But then we had a candidate without the technical skills. They worked in a related environment that exposed them to the technical skills, so it wasn't a huge leap. Very conversational demeanor; easy to see them making a client comfortable. They could grasp the technical concepts and convey them simply. They were eager to learn. Exuded confidence. Clearly motivated. But importantly, his attitude was genuine.
He's easily one of our top performers. Now that I manage him, I'm also seeing how much he keeps growing and developing in the role.
It really came down to his ability to inspire our confidence in him. Seeing him portray the traits most valuable to the underlying goals of the role. As a candidate, that requires understanding the context more than just the duties.
You apply for 20 jobs on Indeed. The silence is deafening.
You apply for 20 jobs on Indeed. Half of them require you to create an account on the company website. You leave a trail of ghost accounts that will be used once and never again. You never receive a response.
You apply for 20 jobs on Indeed. One employer offers an interview, but it's so rare for you to receive any response that you forget to check the website and you miss the time.
You apply for 20 jobs on Indeed. One employer offers an interview, but you don't know the magic words that signal to the esoteric mind of an interviewer that you're fit for the job.
You apply for 20 jobs on Indeed. One employer e-mails you saying that 'unfortunately, you do not have the qualifications we are looking for'. You check the job again and see you applied to be a menial labourer.
You apply for 20 jobs on Indeed. Half of them require a car. No one stops to ask how you're supposed to afford one with no job.
You apply for 20 jobs on Indeed. One employer offers a job. The commute makes you want to die in your sleep.
You call the HR manager for the workplace in hopes of arranging an interview more directly. They don't even have an answering machine.
Employers complain that no one wants to work anymore.

10 Steps to follow to Optimize Webpage as per (Answer Engine Optimization)
â
1. Understand User Intent (Especially Question-Based)
Identify what questions your target audience is asking.
Use tools like:
AlsoAsked.com
Answer the Public
Googleâs "People Also Ask"
Semrush/ Ahrefs â Questions in Keyword Explorer
â
2. Use FAQ-style Content and Q&A Format
Answer specific questions in short, clear, direct answers (40â60 words) followed by detailed explanations.
Use H2/H3 for questions and answers right below them.
<h2>What is AEO in SEO?</h2>
<p>AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the process of optimizing content so that search engines can directly provide answers to users' queries, especially in featured snippets and voice search results.</p>
â
3. Optimize for Featured Snippets
Use common snippet formats:
Paragraphs: Direct, 40â60 word answers.
Lists: Use or for steps, how-tos.
Example with <ol> (Ordered List)
If someone searches âHow to optimize for AEO,â you can write:
<h2>How to Optimize for AEO</h2>
<ol>
<li>Identify user questions using tools like AnswerThePublic.</li>
<li>Answer questions in short, clear sentences.</li>
<li>Use structured data like FAQ schema.</li>
  <li>Add Q&A sections using H2 or H3 headings.</li>
</ol>
Example with <ul> (Unordered List)
For a list that doesnât require order, like tools:
<h2>Best Tools for AEO</h2>
<ul>
  <li>AlsoAsked</li>
  <li>AnswerThePublic</li>
  <li>Google Search Console</li>
  <li>Semrush or Ahrefs</li>
</ul>
Tables: For comparisons or data.
Definitions: Clearly define terms with bold formatting or tags.
â
4. Use Structured Data (Schema Markup)
Implement relevant schema to help search engines understand and present your content:
FAQPage schema
HowTo schema
QAPage schema
Article or BlogPosting
Use Googleâs Rich Results Test to validate
â
5. Build Topical Authority
Cover the full range of questions around a topic.
Create content clusters or topic hubs.
Interlink related content using contextual anchor texts.
â
7. Improve Technical SEO for AEO
Fast page speed
Mobile-friendly design
Crawlable and well-structured HTML
Logical heading hierarchy (H1 > H2 > H3, etc.)
â
8. Optimize for Voice Search
Use conversational language
Answer "who," "what," "when," "where," "why," and "how" queries
Prioritize local intent where applicable (especially for businesses)
â
9. Use Clear, Natural Language
Avoid jargon unless targeting a technical audience.
Use active voice, short sentences, and easy readability (aim for Grade 6â8 level).
đ What It Means:
1. Avoid Jargon (unless necessary)
Don't use complex or technical terms unless your audience is expecting them.
If you must use them, explain them in simple terms.
â Example (too technical):
"Optimize your canonicalization strategy via server-side directives."
â
AEO-friendly version:
"Make sure search engines only index one version of a page by setting the correct canonical URL."
2. Use Active Voice
Active voice is more direct, clear, and engaging.
â Passive Voice:
"The content was optimized by the SEO team."
â
Active Voice:
"The SEO team optimized the content."
3. Short Sentences
Keep sentences under 20 words where possible.
One idea per sentence is best.
â Long sentence:
"To ensure your website content is found easily by users and featured in rich results, it is important to optimize it using structured data and clearly written content."
â
AEO-optimized version:
"Use structured data. Write clearly so search engines can understand and feature your content."
4. Easy Readability (Grade 6â8 level)
Most people (and AI systems) prefer content written at a middle school reading level.
Tools like Hemingway Editor or Grammarly help check readability.
Tip: Use common words like:
âStartâ instead of âcommenceâ
âHelpâ instead of âassistâ
âUseâ instead of âutilizeâ
â
Why This Helps AEO
Voice assistants and featured snippets favor quick, clear answers.
AI systems extract and present your content more accurately when itâs clean and direct.
Improves user experience, reducing bounce rates.
â
10. Keep Content Updated
Regularly refresh content with updated facts and figures.
Update answers to reflect the latest knowledge and guidelines.

Using Pages CMS for Static Site Content Management
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/using-pages-cms-for-static-site-content-management/
Using Pages CMS for Static Site Content Management
Friends, Iâve been on the hunt for a decent content management system for static sites for⌠well, about as long as weâve all been calling them âstatic sites,â honestly.
I know, I know: there are a ton of content management system options available, and while Iâve tested several, none have really been the one, yâknow? Weird pricing models, difficult customization, some even end up becoming a whole ânother thing to manage.
Also, I really enjoy building with site generators such as Astro or Eleventy, but pitching Markdown as the means of managing content is less-than-ideal for many ânon-techieâ folks.
A few expectations for content management systems might include:
Easy to use: The most important feature, why you might opt to use a content management system in the first place.
Minimal Requirements: Look, Iâm just trying to update some HTML, I donât want to think too much about database tables.
Collaboration: CMS tools work best when multiple contributors work together, contributors who probably donât know Markdown or what GitHub is.
Customizable: No website is the same, so weâll need to be able to make custom fields for different types of content.
Not a terribly long list of demands, Iâd say; fairly reasonable, even. Thatâs why I was happy to discover Pages CMS.
According to its own home page, Pages CMS is the âThe No-Hassle CMS for Static Site Generators,â and Iâll to attest to that. Pages CMS has largely been developed by a single developer, Ronan Berder, but is open source, and accepting pull requests over on GitHub.
Taking a lot of the âgood partsâ found in other CMS tools, and a single configuration file, Pages CMS combines things into a sleek user interface.
Pages CMS includes lots of options for customization, you can upload media, make editable files, and create entire collections of content. Also, content can have all sorts of different fields, check the docs for the full list of supported types, as well as completely custom fields.
There isnât really a âback endâ to worry about, as content is stored as flat files inside your git repository. Pages CMS provides folks the ability to manage the content within the repo, without needing to actually know how to use Git, and I think thatâs neat.
User Authentication works two ways: contributors can log in using GitHub accounts, or contributors can be invited by email, where theyâll receive a password-less, âmagic-link,â login URL. This is nice, as GitHub accounts are less common outside of the dev world, shocking, I know.
Oh, and Pages CMS has a very cheap barrier for entry, as itâs free to use.
Pages CMS and Astro content collections
Iâve created a repository on GitHub with Astro and Pages CMS using Astroâs default blog starter, and made it available publicly, so feel free to clone and follow along.
Iâve been a fan of Astro for a while, and Pages CMS works well alongside Astroâs content collection feature. Content collections make globs of data easily available throughout Astro, so you can hydrate content inside Astro pages. These globs of data can be from different sources, such as third-party APIs, but commonly as directories of Markdown files. Guess what Pages CMS is really good at? Managing directories of Markdown files!
Content collections are set up by a collections configuration file. Check out the src/content.config.ts file in the project, here we are defining a content collection named blog:
import glob from 'astro/loaders'; import defineCollection, z from 'astro:content'; const blog = defineCollection( // Load Markdown in the `src/content/blog/` directory. loader: glob( base: './src/content/blog', pattern: '**/*.md' ), // Type-check frontmatter using a schema schema: z.object( title: z.string(), description: z.string(), // Transform string to Date object pubDate: z.coerce.date(), updatedDate: z.coerce.date().optional(), heroImage: z.string().optional(), ), ); export const collections = blog ;
The blog content collection checks the /src/content/blog directory for files matching the **/*.md file type, the Markdown file format. The schema property is optional, however, Astro provides helpful type-checking functionality with Zod, ensuring data saved by Pages CMS works as expected in your Astro site.
Pages CMS Configuration
Alright, now that Astro knows where to look for blog content, letâs take a look at the Pages CMS configuration file, .pages.config.yml:
content: - name: blog label: Blog path: src/content/blog filename: 'year-month-day-fields.title.md' type: collection view: fields: [heroImage, title, pubDate] fields: - name: title label: Title type: string - name: description label: Description type: text - name: pubDate label: Publication Date type: date options: format: MM/dd/yyyy - name: updatedDate label: Last Updated Date type: date options: format: MM/dd/yyyy - name: heroImage label: Hero Image type: image - name: body label: Body type: rich-text - name: site-settings label: Site Settings path: src/config/site.json type: file fields: - name: title label: Website title type: string - name: description label: Website description type: string description: Will be used for any page with no description. - name: url label: Website URL type: string pattern: ^(https?://)?(www.)?[a-zA-Z0-9.-]+.[a-zA-Z]2,(/[^s]*)?$ - name: cover label: Preview image type: image description: Image used in the social preview on social networks (e.g. Facebook, Twitter...) media: input: public/media output: /media
There is a lot going on in there, but inside the content section, letâs zoom in on the blog object.
- name: blog label: Blog path: src/content/blog filename: 'year-month-day-fields.title.md' type: collection view: fields: [heroImage, title, pubDate] fields: - name: title label: Title type: string - name: description label: Description type: text - name: pubDate label: Publication Date type: date options: format: MM/dd/yyyy - name: updatedDate label: Last Updated Date type: date options: format: MM/dd/yyyy - name: heroImage label: Hero Image type: image - name: body label: Body type: rich-text
We can point Pages CMS to the directory we want to save Markdown files using the path property, matching it up to the /src/content/blog/ location Astro looks for content.
path: src/content/blog
For the filename we can provide a pattern template to use when Pages CMS saves the file to the content collection directory. In this case, itâs using the file dateâs year, month, and day, as well as the blog itemâs title, by using fields.title to reference the title field. The filename can be customized in many different ways, to fit your scenario.
filename: 'year-month-day-fields.title.md'
The type property tells Pages CMS that this is a collection of files, rather than a single editable file (weâll get to that in a moment).
type: collection
In our Astro content collection configuration, we define our blog collection with the expectation that the files will contain a few bits of meta data such as: title, description, pubDate, and a few more properties.
We can mirror those requirements in our Pages CMS blog collection as fields. Each field can be customized for the type of data youâre looking to collect. Here, Iâve matched these fields up with the default Markdown frontmatter found in the Astro blog starter.
fields: - name: title label: Title type: string - name: description label: Description type: text - name: pubDate label: Publication Date type: date options: format: MM/dd/yyyy - name: updatedDate label: Last Updated Date type: date options: format: MM/dd/yyyy - name: heroImage label: Hero Image type: image - name: body label: Body type: rich-text
Now, every time we create a new blog item in Pages CMS, weâll be able to fill out each of these fields, matching the expected schema for Astro.
Aside from collections of content, Pages CMS also lets you manage editable files, which is useful for a variety of things: site wide variables, feature flags, or even editable navigations.
Take a look at the site-settings object, here we are setting the type as file, and the path includes the filename site.json.
- name: site-settings label: Site Settings path: src/config/site.json type: file fields: - name: title label: Website title type: string - name: description label: Website description type: string description: Will be used for any page with no description. - name: url label: Website URL type: string pattern: ^(https?://)?(www.)?[a-zA-Z0-9.-]+.[a-zA-Z]2,(/[^s]*)?$ - name: cover label: Preview image type: image description: Image used in the social preview on social networks (e.g. Facebook, Twitter...)
The fields Iâve included are common site-wide settings, such as the siteâs title, description, url, and cover image.
Speaking of images, we can tell Pages CMS where to store media such as images and video.
media: input: public/media output: /media
The input property explains where to store the files, in the /public/media directory within our project.
The output property is a helpful little feature that conveniently replaces the file path, specifically for tools that might require specific configuration. For example, Astro uses Vite under the hood, and Vite already knows about the public directory and complains if itâs included within file paths. Instead, we can set the output property so Pages CMS will only point image path locations starting at the inner /media directory instead.
To see what I mean, check out the test post in the src/content/blog/ folder:
--- title: 'Test Post' description: 'Here is a sample of some basic Markdown syntax that can be used when writing Markdown content in Astro.' pubDate: 05/03/2025 heroImage: '/media/blog-placeholder-1.jpg' ---
The heroImage now property properly points to /media/... instead of /public/media/....
As far as configurations are concerned, Pages CMS can be as simple or as complex as necessary. You can add as many collections or editable files as needed, as well as customize the fields for each type of content. This gives you a lot of flexibility to create sites!
Connecting to Pages CMS
Now that we have our Astro site set up, and a .pages.config.yml file, we can connect our site to the Pages CMS online app. As the developer who controls the repository, browse to https://app.pagescms.org/ and sign in using your GitHub account.
You should be presented with some questions about permissions, you may need to choose between giving access to all repositories or specific ones. Personally, I chose to only give access to a single repository, which in this case is my astro-pages-cms-template repo.
After providing access to the repo, head on back to the Pages CMS application, where youâll see your project listed under the âOpen a Projectâ headline.
Clicking the open link will take you into the websiteâs dashboard, where weâll be able to make updates to our site.
Creating content
Taking a look at our siteâs dashboard, weâll see a navigation on the left side, with some familiar things.
Blog is the collection we set up inside the .pages.config.yml file, this will be where we we can add new entries to the blog.
Site Settings is the editable file we are using to make changes to site-wide variables.
Media is where our images and other content will live.
Settings is a spot where weâll be able to edit our .pages.config.yml file directly.
Collaborators allows us to invite other folks to contribute content to the site.
We can create a new blog post by clicking the Add Entry button in the top right
Here we can fill out all the fields for our blog content, then hit the Save button.
After saving, Pages CMS will create the Markdown file, store the file in the proper directory, and automatically commit the changes to our repository. This is how Pages CMS helps us manage our content without needing to use git directly.
Automatically deploying
The only thing left to do is set up automated deployments through the service provider of your choice. Astro has integrations with providers like Netlify, Cloudflare Pages, and Vercel, but can be hosted anywhere you can run node applications.
Astro is typically very fast to build (thanks to Vite), so while site updates wonât be instant, they will still be fairly quick to deploy. If your site is set up to use Astroâs server-side rendering capabilities, rather than a completely static site, the changes might be much faster to deploy.
Wrapping up
Using a template as reference, we checked out how Astro content collections work alongside Pages CMS. We also learned how to connect our project repository to the Pages CMS app, and how to make content updates through the dashboard. Finally, if you are able, donât forget to set up an automated deployment, so content publishes quickly.
