El Festival Sinulog es un acontecimiento habitual en Cebú desde hace 32 años, que se celebra el tercer domingo de enero en honor del Santo Nio ("Niño Jesús"). La parte principal del evento es un ritual de danza que cuenta la historia de cómo el pueblo filipino empezó siendo pagano y luego se hizo cristiano. Uno de los momentos cruciales de la historia religiosa de Filipinas fue cuando el explorador portugués Fernando de Magallanes llegó a Cebú para difundir el cristianismo, entregando pri mero la imagen del Niño Jesús (Sto. Nio) al Rajá Humabon, el Rajá/rey de Cebú, bautizado más tarde como rey Carlos, y a su esposa Amihan/Humanay, bautizada más tarde como reina Juana, delante de otros gobernantes isleños y más de 800 nativos.
