Inspired by @howlingday's weapon posts

To Pyrrha and Ruby, who had sat up half the night awaiting their Knight's return, and both of whom were mad at the other for losing sight of the green haired girl that had Jaune-napped their love interest. Jaune looked a little worse for wear and had a few "blemishes" on the side of his neck.

Pyrrha/Ruby: Jaune.

Jaune: (Rubbing the back of his neck) Hey Pyr. Ruby. Funny meeting you guys here! Wait, shouldn't you both be in bed?

Pyrrha: We could say the same of you.

Jaune: Yeah, well Emerald...

Ruby: (hissing through her teeth) So that's the Hussy's name.

Jaune: Er, what? Did you say something, Ruby?

Pyrrha: She's just over tired... all that... excitement... from yesterday is catching up to her. So Jaune...

Jaune: Okay, since that is settled, shall we go to the cafeteria to have breakfast, or pick something up in Vale?

Pyrrha: Why Vale?

Jaune: The Gun Show, of course. I still need a ranged option. You're coming too, right?

Pyrrha turns her head slightly and regards Ruby for a moment. Ruby outwardly shivers...

It's in the recs list! I'm very much looking forward to this one.

I've certainly enjoyed what I've read so far - it's been nice to get back to the story's original protagonists.

The main mood of Act 5.2 is one of anticipation. We've been getting glimpses of the kids' Grand Plan ever since the Act began, and it very much feels like it's all building up to something. If Homestuck sticks the landing, and the Act 5 finale lives up to all this hype, then this might end up my favorite part of the story so far.

Yeah it's a session tag - although a 'reading session' is a little ambiguously defined, especially when I stop posting for a few hours and return later in the day. How long a gap does it need to be before it qualifies as a new reading session?

I've just been tagging every post made in the same day as the same session. It's not a perfect solution, but it'll do.

Wow, it started in 2010? I could conceivably have been reading Paranatural in school - although I'm glad I came to it a little later, so I wasn't constantly waiting for updates.

Based on this, it's it's probably safe to assume that all the kids have eyes matching their text colors. Has Rose been blessed with the legendary mutation, Alexandria's Genesis?

I did wonder if Bro's sword shenanigans were something to do with Dave's Quest - like, maybe he was bequeathing his anime sword to his brother, to accomplish some objective. Now that Dave has his own Quest sword, I think that interpretation is less likely.

Symbolically though, I do think it's notable that Bro's sword is intact, and Dave's is broken. It ties into how Dave sees himself as a worse version of Bro, on some level.

As far as Jack is concerned, I doubt the game intends for him to have anything to do with Dave's journey. The whole point is that he's ignoring the game's rules - so if anything, his antics might start to break the Quests.

It sounds like the style was supposed to take readers aback - although I didn't find it particularly jarring myself!

Homestuck's art style is constantly changing, with this, the Earthbound sprites, and Hero Mode, among other things. Honestly, I had just assumed that the comic's art just fluctuated depending on Hussie's mood.

I quite like the HussNasty panels, and I hope Hussie keeps experimenting with the comic's art. It sounds like this is the beginning of a more general trend, so I'm hopeful that it will continue.

Oh, so it just straight up is Excalibur.

New theory about his Quest, then. It's about worthiness, and Dave is being tasked to 'prove himself' as a hero, despite his insecurities. This ties neatly into the next set of asks below:

Anonymous asked: my headcanon (partially supported by the text, as you've seen from rose's conversation with jaspers) is that each quest is designed to help you self-improve, so that you can responsibly preside over an entire universe. whether you agree with the game about the ways you need to improve is another story.

I've speculated that the Quests are teaching the Players how to sculpt their universe. Building on from this idea, then, these asks speculate that Quests are also trying to improve the Players as people, so that the nascent universe will flourish under their care.

It's an interesting idea - although it does beg the question of why Sburb is creating such flawed Players in the first place. If it's looking for self-actualized custodians for its universe, why did it create Players like the trolls, who wanted to rule over their universe like tyrants?

I guess it's possible that a flawed Player who self-improves is actually more resilient than a flawless Player who never needed to change. The former would potentially be more resilient, capable of adapting to the changing circumstances of their universe as it grows and evolves.

I wish! That's more of an aspirational schedule, really. I should probably delink it, if it's causing confusion.

If we assume that Sburb did evolve, then it makes sense that it works this way. However, if it was created by some intelligent being, then holding the Players hostage like this seems pretty malicious.

I mean, there are ways to ensure participation in the game that don't involve destroying an entire planet. No matter how clear you were about the risks, if you asked the population of Earth for volunteers, you'd be guaranteed millions of responses.

All that said, if Sburb worked this way, we'd have a very different story. I understand why Sburb works the way it does, in the context of Homestuck's themes.

Oh I definitely thought they were white when i first read the comic back in like 2014, and i still do think they are. They're plenty of instances in the comic where the characters physical traits are mentioned and the way Hussie as drawn them in a more detailed style prove this. Plus didn't he say something once about how he sees the kids as A-racial but they aren't black and and followed it up with "which is very racist of me"? Correct me if im wrong but swear i remember him saying that. But it doesn't matter they're fictional characters draw them as whatever, you can make their skin purple give them a bunch traits or whatever. You do you I'll do me

It was from the formspring when someone asked about if Jade was Asian. Probably because of her eyes being small and buck-tooth, a stereotype people associate with Asians. Which makes the Anon racist. Andrew did say that line though. Likely also in meta sense that all the kids are portrayed as white as seen in comic overworld and not black black or brown black. The very latter which nobody ever or rarely uses even in MSPFAs, even when characters are suppose to have traits that indicated they are black such as curly hairstyle, dreadlocks, or braids. Which the nu-fandom considers are hairstyles only meant for black people only. Whenever people do that with white character sprites overworld, I either think it is someone's OC or a fankid between two characters of a ship. Worse is ones when they only show said different interpretation in HERO MODE moments of the fanventure and not in overworld. At this point, if you are not lazy to draw them full-body with braids, do the same for the overworld. It's jarring to see the regular Rose Lalonde's sprite having smooth bobcut hair in one scene, only for the next panel to show her having curly hair and detailed proportions in the next cause HERO MODE.

But yeah, let people portray whatever they want with the kids. If someone draws them white, that's fine. If someone draws them black, it's fine. If someone draws them Asian, that's fine. If someone makes all the girls blue for Jake's harem, that's fine too.

the trope of the Evil Hussy in het woman romance literature is born from a lot of women's self-hatred and fear that a man will only ever 'settle' for them and will dump them the moment a more attractive woman shows up and subconsciously they wish that they could have a partner who not only finds them attractive but will fight valiantly against the hordes of lecherous conventionally attractive women seeking to steal them away. i get where it comes from i was the Ugly Girl i know but it's regardless always super jarring and kind of hilarious whenever the writer shoehorns in an "evil hot woman" who aggressively lusts after the male love interest for some reason and who usually doesnt even have any clear motive for doing what she does besides "I just want to fuck your mid boyfriend and i dont want you to be happy EVER!!!!"

Something I’ve learned over the past bit is that during the later parts of Homestuck, ESPECIALLY OPENBOUND, you are going to be in a constant cycle of saying “what the fuck Hussie” over and over again.

Whether it’s a side comment that feels SUPER off, a statement or character moment that did not fucking age well (and was probably pretty bad for its time too), or just an example of Hussie directly injecting his less savory opinions or interests into the comic in a very jarring and noticeable way, there are going to be a lot of times you just get annoyed by the author.

Homestuck as a core story is actually very cool and compelling but Hussie as an author has inserted so much gross bullshit that can easily be taken out without much change to the plot that you really have to think critically when consuming the comic itself.

It’s really infuriating because Hussie keeps trying to do the literal death of the author thing and remove himself from the story and all that jazz symbolically to give the readers/fans a sense of agency but he also clogs it up with all his bullshit and keeps popping up in self-insert form to say another out of pocket thing and it’s just. Annoying. You can’t have your cake and eat it too buddy, can’t remove your work from yourself but also literally pop up in it every few hundred pages, pick one.

I really love your reading analysis about egbert's gender. It feels more organic to understand the text and map the constellation of egberts gender journey. Idk the spirit of in depth analysis is such a homestuck cornerstone culture, its almost jarring when i see people no-questions accept june cus someone else said so.

sure! i find a lot of fun in textual analysis, especially about gender and how it ties into narratives, how it affects stories beyond just the characters. i don't think june would have been publicly accepted as canon were it not for the idea's staggering amount of basis in the work. hussie has even said "june was there all along" in reference to the alterniabound easter egg, which is like. who the fuck knows what to make of that comment

“Finished” Nier

I finally pushed through my run of Nier Replicant 1.5 tonight. My experience was very up and down. I had moments I loved but spent a whole lot of the time annoyed.

It was quite a jarring experience given how much I liked Automata. Which, I’m aware they’re very different games in function but given how the new Nier rerelease had some Automata shine put on to it I went in expecting less aggravation than I got.

The parts I enjoyed most were definitely character ones. I enjoy Taro’s darker- or rather, his unique storytelling. It’s a nice change compared to tropes you’d see more often. The fact he made Drakengard 1′s entire main cast out of tropes her personally dislikes is enough to get me to follow the mans work. lol

For Nier, the things I tended to enjoy the most was the small character interactions. Especially watching Kaine and Weiss give each other shit. I’ll never be able to hear the word hussy and not laugh again.

I loved learning that Weiss is scared of ghosts or that Kaine basically takes Emil camping being far nicer than normal. I also love that she doesn’t want Nier to know this preferring to maintain her “image”.

Nier himself I had the most issue caring about. Perhaps it’s just my western existence but I find his motivation hard to truly engulf in. I spent the game wishing Pappa Nier was in the game instead.

In the time I spent learning DrakeNier lore playing Automata I found Nier’s premise more engaging when Nier is the father, not the brother. I could by a Nier’s motives, and failings against humanity, more when he’s a father. The desperation of a parent is not to be underestimated.

Brother Nier is passable and some scenes do make more sense for this version but I personally can’t be as invested in this version. Although, I do like that Nier-Kaine dynamic.

What would the game be without the love between a murder hobo and her twink~

Sadly the game fell apart for me outside this. Combat is perfectly fine but I had a hard time playing the game. I’d have to force myself to sit down and do it because I was determined to at least do one route by my own power.

And you may wonder how I had such a hard time playing when I liked characters well enough and find combat fine as is. The simple answer is tedium. I tried doing as many side quests as I could.

I wanted to make sure I saw as much of the story as I could and not miss anything given Taro’s reputation. This was admittedly a bad idea because the sheer back track between this and story missions got to me.

It somehow felt frustrating to even go to a story mission after a point. I can not quite figure out why this is. Perhaps it was the constant back track & jog and perhaps some missions just were not fun.

After finishing part 1 I couldn’t take it anymore. I downloaded some saves and played part 2 onward achieving Ending D. The file itself only had Nier two levels higher than the file I had initially done so I didn’t cheese the game in terms of power.

I did however cheese the sidequests. This let me get an ending despite how cheap it would seem to some of you bigger fans. I’m also sure I missed a few story/world beats by doing this but I refused to fetch quest anymore.

The game was just doing something in a way that I couldn’t stand anymore even if I can’t quite place a finger on why. I also refused to do any fishing minigames. A hidden leveling system? 10 or so fish requests? No thank you sir never.

I left this game a bit sad that I couldn’t enjoy it but I can’t bring myself to replay this for a long time. The tedium is just too much, I’ll have to settle for my shameful hacked route D.

I eventually just youtubed the ending E which...left me with so many questions but that’s for a rant or talk with someone more versed in the DrakeNier mythos than myself.

Editor Derek: I forgot to add that I seemed to be most interested with the story at the intro. I feel way more invested in the fall out and war timeline after Caim and Angelus fell into the Nier world.

This is to the extent that the shift from that intro to the actual story was as stark as my first time playing KH2′s intro in 05 to the story after Sora wakes.

As Velvet and Jaune stand there listening to Coco babble incoherently, the medical and janitorial staff rush in, alerted to the situation by multiple panicked scroll calls to Beacon's main switch board. It was a small army of uniformed persons, some armed with mops and pails, others with gauze and back boards. Entering just behind them, Pyrrha, Nora and Ren.

Jaune: Velvet?

Velvet: (Turning her attention from Coco being secured to a back board) Yes?

Jaune: Did you... (blushing and pouting) HAVE TO SLAP MY ASS!?!

Pyrrha: *GASP*

Velvet: I...

Nora: (shouting while pointing at Velvet) I chose you Pyr-Pyr! Use KILL THE HUSSY!!!

Velvet: (Dodging away from a Pyrrha tackle) I had to! (Ducks under a flying tackle by Nora) I'M SORRY!

Jaune: Guys?

Ren: It's okay, Jaune. We're here now... we'll keep you safe from would-be sexual deviants.

Velvet: I'M (weaves between Pyrrha and Nora's lunges) NOT (Leans back and under a grab by Nora) A (Twists while still leaning backwards to evade a grab by Pyrrha) DEVIANT!

Jaune: Guys can you... (pauses when she realizes that she's being led away) Ren where are we going?

Ren: To the dorm. Professor Goodwitch is probably...

Coco: (Cackling as she rushes back into the cafeteria) Hands off my WOMAN, TWINK!

Velvet/Nora/Pyrrha: (Freezing in mid-motion) Coco?

Ren skids across the newly mopped floor as Coco shoulders him aside and scoops Jaune up in a princess carry, and rushes for the far exit.

Jaune: EEP!!!

Coco: This Arse is mine! These Boobs belong to me, and to the victorious goes this Godly Valean Vag!

Nora: IF I don't chase after you, can you get Jaune-Jaune to smoother me with her bodacious breasts?

Jaune: WHAT THE HELL, NORA!

Coco: Agreed!

Nora: Excellent! (Nora changes targets and snags Pyrrha in a side headlock.) Now, now Pyr-Pyr... let's leave the newly-weds alone>

Pyrrha/Jaune: WHAT THE FU...

Nora: (speaking to Pyrrha, who she still has in a headlock.) Obviously she can, she just doesn't want to listen.

Nora: Obviously she is, but she made a deal... and one can not pass up a smothering opportunity like that... those are once in a thousand-year quality ta-tas, Pyr-Pyr...

Pyrrha: But...

Props to Andrew Hussie for taking a really popular analogy (the circus) for people coming together and making a place for them to bond over the fact society treats them like unnatural demons sent to plague the world with their marked differences and reducing it into yet another system of the the already powerful to oppress and exploit others far weaker than them in society.
