Huxloween

Hey guys. I don’t know how many days out of Huxloween I’ll participate in but here is my contribution to Day 3: Possession/Exorcism

There is minor character death, and light description of gore.

           The day Benjamin went missing from the pew next to Armitage, Brendol had scoffed at Leia and Han when they took their normal seats. Armitage eyed the empty space next to Leia where Ben usually occupied with a pout or a smug grin when he thought he was being slick. At home Brendol ranted about Ben’s sinful and hellion ways and announced his theory that Solo and Organa had given up on raising anything other than a delinquent.

           The second Sunday Benjamin was missing, Brendol had heard all the gossip available among the congress. ‘Benjamin Solo hasn’t been to any social functions at all.’ ‘Neither Leia or Han will make any comment about their son’s disappearance.’ There were also the crazy rumours. Whispers of murder, of locking Benjamin away, of finally getting rid of the odd one out. Of course, that’s just what they were, rumours. Armitage wasn’t so dumb as to believe that either of Ben’s worn and saddened expressions pointed to anything malicious.

           By the third Sunday Armitage found himself livid, thoroughly infuriated, by Benjamin’s disappearance. He was the entire talk of the town, let alone the church. Every Sunday, Brendol took precious time to speak with the priest and other church goers. Now that everyone was willing to listen to Brendol’s ranting on the Organa-Solo family failures, he found an extra thirty minutes out of his and Armitage’s day to gossip.

           Having enough of this, Armitage does what no one else has done: He asks Ben’s parent’s where he is. Leia’s lips tensed and her eyes watered. Han’s shoulders slumped and he turned his eyes away. “He’s sick. We’re hoping he’ll get better soon.” That was all Leia said before she turned sharply and hurried away with Han close by.

           That week Armitage decided to pay a visit to the church outside of congregation. It was the only reason he was ever allowed outside of his father’s range and so he found himself sitting in the pews of church pretending to pray. In the distance, he could hear some type of loud conversation but it was muffled. There were a few banging and clattering sounds coming from wherever the conversation was coming from, Armitage figured it was the grumpy preacher rearranging his supplies. He ignored it, as annoying and distracting from his peace as it was, until the doors to the side of the church burst open revealing stairs.

           Armitage could hear the yells more clearly now, but that’s all they were, yells and grunts. He cautiously stood and found himself drawn closer to the stairs. The thuds returned, but Armitage felt a full body numbing sensation as he realized the thuds were coming down the stairs at a rapid pace. A form suddenly appeared tumbling down the stairs, the source of the thuds, and landed in a broken heap at Armitage’s feet with a sickeningly loud crack. The preacher.

           Armitage’s stomach fell and he felt his numb limbs freeze up as he took in the mangled form and widened eyes of his preacher. Blood poured from an open wound around his chest, puddling around Armitage’s perfectly polished shoes. Only when a growling black figure appeared at the end of stairs did Armitage finally break from his morbid trance. He took in a sharp breath and squared his shoulders.

           “Armie.” The creature greeted. There were sharp horns protruding from the mop of black hair that covered its face. It was cloaked in black but it was clear that this being was larger than Armitage in height and physique.

           “Benjamin?” Armitage narrowed his eyes, willed his heart to not implode, and found himself wondering if he fell asleep at the pew. Benjamin hadn’t had such long hair the last he saw him, the last he ran his fingers through it in secret.

           Finally, the creature rolled its head around with disturbing pops, the dark hair slipping away from their face to reveal Ben’s face. It was Ben’s thick lips, big nose, and smothering of moles; but his eyes were completely black, his teeth were sharpened, and his smile was so crooked it seemed drawn on rather than actually being formed. Armitage took a step back but his back hit an invisible wall.

           “No, not Ben. The boy does send his regards though. I am Kylo Ren.” A large hand rose, the one that Armitage could clearly remember slapping away from himself when it wandered too far in public, and sharp claws clenched midair. The air in Armitage’s lungs suddenly disappeared. He didn’t struggle, he knew there wasn’t a point to it. Instead he glared at the Ben imposter as he stepped over the corpse and crowded Armitage, grazing his nose across Armitage’s cheek and breathing heavily and warm against him.

           “Armie.” A soft growl, closer to the sound Ben made the first time Armitage allowed him to kiss him. A claw gripped his upper arm, painfully. “Armitage Hux.” There was blood dripping down Armitage’s arm from where the demon’s forefinger pierced his skin. His knees were shaking, his chest spasming and burning, and his eyes were beginning to darken. “You’re still useful to me for now, Hux. You will be our weapon.” Armitage’s eyes slipped closed and the last thing he heard was another growl of his name and the blood pumping through his ears.

Yay new chapter! Had to skip a few days, my schedule got the best of me but I made sure to do a little something for Local Myth or Legend day. It’s just a short chapter but I’m planning something a little meatier for tomorrow and hopefully on my days off next week, catch up on some prompts I missed. Enjoy!

Remains of The Emperor

So, it’s that time of year again. @huxloween is kicking off and I’m diving in feet first again. As with last year I’m going to do my best to keep up but I must admit I’m hella rusty. I haven’t been writing much. Oh well. Without further ado, lets do this thing.

“Over here!” Elijah’s voice sounded out through the rubble of the old castle. Jastia leapt over a low wall she’d been examining and sprinted through the crumbled corridors surrounding them.

 For ages the archeological team had been picking through the crumbled fortress of the Red Emperor, seeking the reason for the sudden collapse of the Second Galactic Empire. Even the schematics for the massive abode had been lost. They’d hoped that if they were to find the inner sanctum they may be able to make some sense.

Elijah was running his hands along an ornate black stone wall. It was inlaid with intricate reliefs of the galactic battles fought during the rise of the Red Emperor. Here and there it was set with red jewels that seemed to glow even in the dim light filtering through the cracked walls. Even the golden embellishments of the Emperor’s circlet shone as if they were just polished.

“I have a feeling that this isn’t just a wall,” he said, running a finger across a red jewel that was pooled beneath a massive monster. Standing above the slain creature was a figure that appeared constantly at the side of the Emperor in all of the art from the second empire. The figure’s name had been lost to time, but indications were that the man was the Emperor’s consort and knight. “I feel a pull, almost a flow pulling from behind it.”

Jastia examined the edges of the relief with her own flashlight. “You were right the last time, when we found that mystery armor,” she said, recalling the highly polished set of ‘trooper armor in a chamber on a lower level. It had appeared as if whomever wore it had cast it off in a hurry. The records they recovered after were clear that this armor belonged to a former confidant of the Emperor. Immediately after the fall of the Second Empire, much of the historical documentation had been destroyed. All that remained were the few private collections former imperials had squirreled away and a few lost buildings. Even so, many of the names had been redacted or erased in the interest of keeping the few remaining families from being linked to the war crimes the second empire committed. 

Elijah pulled back and looked pensive. “I’m sure that this is a sound activated door. I can’t for the life of me figure out what the kriff the word to open it would be,” Elijah sighed. “What about you Jas?”

Jastia sucked the inside of her cheek, thinking back to all the holos she’d watched concerning the Second Empire. “I’m not sure if I remember the name right. It was the super weapon that the Red Emperor designed. The one he intended to use to destroy the republic in one swoop,” It was dancing on the tip of her tongue, but for the life of her she couldn’t recall.

“Oh!” Elijah gasped, snapping his fingers. “You mean the Sun Eater?”

“Yeah, it inhaled suns and exhaled death. But it wasn’t called ‘Sun Eater.’ It was star . . . killer?” she said, stumbling over the last bit. It sounded right.

“Starkiller,” Elijah said in a hushed voice, even now the word was a curse. The devastation it caused wasn’t forgotten in the Republican books written after the Empire ended. They had struck the Emperor’s real name from the histories, and just begun to call him the Starkiller.

There was a rumbling and the wall began to shift. Debris was dislodged around their feet and dust swirled around in the air. Both Elijah and Jastia pulled their scarves across their faces to keep the dust from filling their lungs. When the wall stopped moving a hallway had been revealed, and a bright light shone at the end.

The explorers shot each other a look and Jastia took the lead. Even in this dead place, no one knew how the Emperor had booby trapped the fortress. Even the planet had been inaccessible for hundreds of years after the empire fell. The atmosphere had been filled with poison gas and radiation. Most of the histories pointed the finger at another super weapon designed by the Emperor himself, but some evidence in archives had come to light that indicated that it may have been built and deployed by the rebellion.

They came to the end of the hallway and found it opened up into a vast chamber that appeared to be the Emperor’s personal quarters. It was massive, and almost in pristine condition. The gas and radiation seemed to have not been able to penetrate the walls here. Up in the ceiling was a large dome of transparisteel that must have been disguised from the outside. It was the reason the whole room glowed in the warm light of the system’s sun.

Jastia’s eyes scanned the room, settling on the bed. There lay two skeletons in an embrace. One with a circlet of gold across its sun bleached brow and the other with a collar of gold bearing the Emperor’s seal. Their forms were covered slightly in a large red cape, bordered with intricate gold braiding. Before the Emperor was a ruler, he had been a soldier. Old aesthetics died hard.

Jastia moved closer to examine the skeletons more closely. As she stood at the edge of the massive bed she could see the hands of the two. Each wore a ring on the left ring finger, the Emperor and his consort. “At least that answers that. The knight was also his husband.” She said to Elijah over her shoulder, turning back to the bodies. She then saw lying on the coverlet next to the bone hand of the knight a silver cylinder shaped like a cross. She gasped, no amount of revisionist history had lost that particular technology. “Elijah, it’s a lightsaber! The knight’s lightsaber.”

Elijah appeared at her side, gaping down at the pair. “They committed suicide,” he whispered, gesturing at the scorched holes in the breast bones of each form.

“But why?” Jastia asked, looking at his face.

“Unfortunately we’ll probably never know,” Elijah answered. “The fireplace over there is filled with burned papers. Apparently before they ended their lives they’d burned their flimsies and smashed all of the databanks and holos,”

Jastia sighed. “Well, at the very least we’ve found their bodies. I’ll send a message to the professor to send a preservation team. They will be able to recover the relics at the very least.”

Elijah nodded and headed back down the hallway toward the entrance of the ruins. Jastia turned to follow, but something pulled her to look back. She thought she caught a glimpse of a blue figure standing by the bed. She felt cold wash over her and the thought appeared in her mind, unbidden, we were in love. Jastia shivered and turned, jogging lightly to catch up to Elijah.

Huxloween! Prompt 16: Headless Horseman

A/N: Sorry for the delay! Been a busy bee!

The night is cold, accompanied with a bitter cold wind and a blood moon. It’s definitely enough to make Kylo Ren shiver. And nothing makes Kylo Ren, infamous highway man and cut-throat thief, shiver.

Burrowing deeper into his coat, Kylo watches the vacant dirt road. No cart has passed through since sundown, and whether it is due to the myth of the headless horseman, Kylo can’t be sure. He’s pretty sure that tonight is the night when his grandfather, Anakin, savage and cut-throat killer, was decapitated for his crimes as a local highwayman, and murderer.

Although the date remains a fuzzy mystery for Kylo, since his parents refused to acknowledge his grandfather, he has memorised the outcome of the execution. The merchants and general populace of the surrounding villages, had gathered at the crossroads some ways up the road – where the massive oak tree stands between the diverging roads. There, they proclaimed him a villain, a ghoul who would forever the mar the consciousness of their towns. Proceeded with lopping his head off with his own sword.

Just the thought of it makes him unconsciously grasp at his neck.

“Kylo,” a husky voice sound behind him, prompting him to turn and face his second in command, Gwen Phasma, a strong woman, with an even stronger punch.

“A carriage is heading this way, shouldn’t be more than five minutes until it gets here. Should we move into position?” As her mind lands on robbery, her hand flicks to the dagger at her waist.

“Yes. Move the knights into position.”

Tucked in the comfort of his cabin, Armitage Hux, young lawyer and son of a business tycoon, remains working: reading and re-reading the notes for his next case. His attention is so engrossed in how he will manufacture the defence of military defector, Finn, instead of taking in the world outside his window.

The quietness of the forest outside is perfect for memorising the words on the page in front of him. All until the coach slams to a stop, throwing Hux from his seat in a bundle of arms and legs. A slight growl erupts from his lips, as he finds his way back from the floor.

“Mitaka! What is all the hold-up?” Hux shouts, thumping on the small window between the inside of the carriage and the driver’s seat out front.

“Bloody incompetent driver.” He grumbles, smoothing back his rumpled hair and tie.

Picking up his book from the floor, Hux attempts to replicate his former state by leafing through the pages of notes and countless cases. Just as he starts reading, once more, the door opens: violently.

Shocked, Hux’s eyes – wide as saucers – snap to the now-open door, only to see an imposing figure blocking his needed escape. With the ensemble of leather coats and belts, it is not hard to guess the situation: he is being robbed. By highway men.

It wouldn’t be the first time.

“It’s time to be de-plucked.” The figure simply says.

Hux sighs, at both the reveal of a female voice and the loss of his hard-earned riches. Sliding out of the plush carriage’s seats with a slight roll of his eyes. The dim glint of the moon allows Hux to see the surrounding bandits: some on the road, others still half-hidden in the trees – and all armed to the teeth.

“Great.” A small murmur and another eye roll.

As he moves to stand with Mitaka, quickly bound but thankfully not gagged, Hux manages a biting comment - much to the surprise of the surrounding bandits: “Spare me the puns, just rob me already.”  

Glowering, Hux wraps his arms around himself in an attempt to combat the cold. None of the bandits surrounding them looks slightly affected by the cold, wrapped to the nines in woollen scarfs and thick coats. Lucky bastards.

“Are we going to stand around in the cold all day, or are we going to get this robbery over and done with?” Hux sneers, searching the band of highwaymen for any sign of movement.

There it is. Movement.

A man steps out from the tree line, decked head to toe in black; complete with a broadsword strapped to his belt. Hux notices this weapon with nothing more than a raised brow. What is this stranger going to do, decapitate him?

“You’re rather cocky for someone who’s about to be robbed.” The line is spoken with a lop-sided smirk.

As soon as the mystery man enters the light, Hux recognises him. Honestly, he would recognise that glossy black mane anywhere.

“Kylo Ren and his band of armed misfits.” Hux’s face morphs back into a sneer.

“Knights.”

“Oh sorry,” Hux drawls, “Kylo Ren and his band of jolly knights.”

Gathering his courage, a little more, Hux moves forward slightly, raising both an eyebrow and his tone. “What would your mother say? If she knew you were emulating your grandfather, I’m afraid she’d be more than angry.”

Kylo’s hand flicks towards his sword, irritation flashing across his features. But before he can speak, the blonde woman, who forced him out of the comfort of his carriage, jumps to Ren’s defence.

“And what do you know? You waste away in the city, defending scum and drowning in riches; all the while we steal and fight just to survive.”

Another raised eyebrow. “Hardly. You have nothing to survive with Kylo’s mum to protect you all.”

Within a blink Kylo is up in Hux’s face, seething and spitting “Just because my mum is the mayor, doesn’t mean that my life is plain sailing.”

“And you assume mine is?” Hux asks, cocking his head.

“I assume yours is – “

But before Kylo can spit out the rest, the ruckus of drumming hooves sounds from the bend in the road. All eyes and ears turn to it; attempting to discover what it is coming their way. All eyes but Hux and Kylo’s whose eyes remained locked on each other’s.

“Maybe it’s the horseman, your granddaddy, coming to voice his support.” Hux taunts, eyes briefly flicking towards the oncoming road traffic.

Then the sound rounds the corner, coupled with a black phantom horse and leather-clad rider. A rider with no head.
