The air is heavy with exhaust trails crisscrossing and dissipating in every direction. Streaks of light scatter in wide spreading arcs. Missiles, both surface to air and air to air, and the tracers of anti air guns far below. I think I even see the odd burst of flack, but i have to be imagining that.
Been in this fight too long, minds playing tricks.
It's getting harder to see my allies in the thick of all this, I check the radar. Their IFFs keep getting fewer and farther apart. I hear a screaming tone and a womans voice, I reflexively shove the stick as far to the left as it'll go and send the fighter rolling wing over wing. The missile streaks past and the warning system goes quiet again, leaving me with my thoughts and the groaning of the airframe.
The National Armory has taken the MiG-29M far beyond it's limits, no airframe, no matter how old, can be wasted in this war. The Super Fulcrum flies higher, faster, runs better and can take twice the beating she could take when she first rolled off the assembly line in 2005. She's even achieved the rare distinction of so called "Hyper-Maneuverability." The aces in their modern 7th gen fighters may look down their noses at us second liners in our "salvage jobs," but i know i can take a sort of pride in knowing I'm twice the pilot they'll ever be.
Shame how little that means now.
Raw skill and technical capability fails in the face of an enemy with technological and economic superiority. What good is dog fighting against a swarm of fighter sized drones that has you outnumbered 10:1 with the ability to kill you before you even see them on radar?
The sound of the burning metal of my flight leads plane falling over me is your answer. Sounds like the rain. I pull out of the roll and enter a dive, radars a mess with blinking red IFF signatures all over me. I have to keep maneuvering for now, look for an opening.
Getting hard to think. The comms are a mess. AWACs is gone, not sure when that happened. Chain of command has collapsed, everyone's talking over each other. Brass won't give the order to withdraw and stopped answering our calls. Blues theory we were just a diversion for commands golden boy's mission is looking more and more right by the minute. I wonder-
A burst of gunfire streaks past my cockpit. I ease the stick up out of the dive, aiming for a sheer cliff face, the drones haven't let up. The afterburner is on full and the cliff is filling my view screen. I wait until it's all i can see before rapidly decelerating and angle the nose for another climb, at least four fighters overshoot me and slam into the cliff face. Six are still on me, I kick the afterburner to maximum again.
Chaos still reigns on comms. I check the IFF, Blues signature is gone. I think about retreating. I'd have to go AWOL, retreating without authorization would be desertion and desertion is treason and traitors are shot. I keep climbing, I can't do anything with these things on me.
There's a grinding noise, sheering metal, and I begin spinning out uncontrollably. I look to my left and see my wing is gone. The old girl finally gave out after all this time.
I key my comms, "There's a hole in my left wing." I report and turn off the radio, the drones peel off in my peripheral vision. The cockpits rattling, airframe failing, and warnings blaring create the chorus to my last minutes. I fight with the stick to keep us pushing upwards into the heavens through the death spin, the canards and vertical stabilizers are forced to fight beyond their limits in support of my lost cause.
The altimeter clicks higher in my HUD and I can see the sky begin to shift from cloudless blue to twilight purple. The automated system begs me to eject eject eject ej-
I disable the warning system. At last, i reach my zenith. The purple twilight is stretching into the beginnings of stars. I let go of the stick.
I unlatch the breathing mask, like taking a muzzle off my snout.
I open my jaws, and breathe my last.

USS Sorcerer (NCC-9670-B), Arlington-class long-range fast dreadnought:

(Arlington-class reference art via @MarcSherwood8 on Twitter)
The Arlington-class dreadnought USS Sorcerer (NCC-9670-B) started her life as an Odyssey-class dreadnought, one of the sister ships of the USS Enterprise-F. Like her famous sister, the Sorcerer was heavily damaged in the 2411 Battle of Midnight, the climactic battle of the Iconian War, fought above Earth. The Sorcerer lay in spacedock above Mars for several years as subsequent events redirected Federation shipbuilding towards new endeavors. Finally beginning reconstruction in 2412, she saw several planned refit suggestions come and go - first, she was to be rebuilt to Odyssey-class standard, then to the upgraded Yorktown-class refit, then the upgunned Lexington-class subclass of the Yorktown-class. Finally, in 2414, it was decided that the Sorcerer would become the second in the newly designed Arlington-class of long-range fast-response dreadnoughts, to spearhead a new Federation effort to explore the Gamma Quadrant alongside the Federation's allies in the Klingon Empire, Romulan Republic, Tzenkethi Coalition, and the newly peaceful Dominion, as well as follow up on issues related to the Hur'q Crisis of 2411. Under the command of Captain Yanute, the vessel was relaunched on January 1, 2416, the 5th anniversary of the Battle of Midnight.
The Arlington-class long-range fast dreadnought:
As a descendant of the Odyssey-class, the Arlington is one of the largest ships ever built by the Federation; the subclass measures 1041.5 meters long, 385.22 meters at the beam, with a draught of over 200 meters, and a mass of over 7.25 million metric tons. With a crew of over 900, space for a full Starfleet Marine Corps battalion of 800+ members, and an embarked air wing of 400 personnel, the immense long-range vessel is thusly provided with a laundry list of amenities ranging from an internal promenade/mall, a dozen holodecks, two arboretums, two internal pool/sauna complexes, three main social lounges, and dozens of observation areas.
Able to maintain quantum slipstream travel for a full six hours, the Arlington-class combines its impressive speed with some of the heaviest firepower ever added to a Federation vessel. Boasting 29 MkXV phaser arrays, 4 light and 4 heavy MkXV pulsed phaser cannons, and a whopping 14 multipurpose torpedo/probe launch tubes. These tubes are capable of fully automated loading of the full Federation probe range, as well as photon, quantum, and transphasic torpedoes, the latter-most only available in limited quantities due to weapons limitation treaties.
In addition, the Arlington-class carries over the Lexington-class's phaser spinal lance, capable of devastating damage against vessels even larger than the Arlington. The phaser lance has been colloquially nicknamed the "Wave Motion Gun" by Lexington- and Arlington-class crew members, as it's immense energy discharge resembles that of a similarly devastating weapon from a late 20th century Earth science fiction franchise.
The Arlington also plays host and mother ship to an Eagle-class light "parasite" escort, itself a formidable and agile vessel, armed with multiple phaser arrays, four phaser cannons, and four torpedo tubes. A full wing of 60 Federation Aerospace Force Valkyrie aerospace fighters, falling under the command of the vessels' Commander Air Group, rounds out the vessels' firepower.
Defenses consist of a quadruple-layer hyper-capacitor-based metaphasic shield array, a full meter of albative armor, and a full suite of phaser- and microtorpedo-based CIWS systems; the Arlington is also fitted for but not with a Nanotech Molecular Ablative Generator field array, based on technology from an alternate 25th century.

India's IT and BPO services sector has grown rapidly since its inception in the mid-1990s and today has a turnover of US$37.6 billion. The Indian BPO market has grown due to economies of scale, reduced business risk, cost advantages, improved utilization, and superior experience. Among competitors such as Australia, China, the Philippines, and Ireland, India is now the world's leading hub for the consumption of BPO services. India's immense popularity as a global outsourcing destination is due to the country's low labor costs and a large pool of skilled and skilled workers gave an opportunity to companies like Ascent BPO to provide better services at reasonable prices.
But since many organizations in India offer quality data entry services, companies only need to choose the best ones after they have done their homework. Look on our website to learn how to choose the Best BPO Company like us.
What is business process deploying or outsourcing (BPO)?
Before we get started, we want to give our audience an overview of what a BPO is. Business process outsourcing companies provide services that allow companies to focus on their core business. Let us consider this problem in detail. You may not have the time or resources for a separate organization that you can trust to handle other aspects of your business. These other aspects can be anything from call center operations, marketing, SEO, finance to human resource activities. The sky is the limit. Now that business process outsourcing has sparked some interest, let's explain what to look for in the Best BPO company.
Some Best BPO company are given below:

Interview on AI / Tech / Poetry / Labor
My writer friend Christopher Soto is interviewing me for a piece on poetry, AI, creative writing, and labor. Most of this is going to be cut, so why not post the first draft here?
*
CS: Recently we went on a hike and were talking about the intersection of literary production and artificial intelligence. You described us as part of âthe last generation to experience raw human emotion,â can you elaborate on this idea?
JW: Let me clarify that remark. Weâve been cyborgs and pharmacological hybrids for a long time. I donât think thereâs something like an ideal state of authentic humanness, nor do I think that humanness is better than non-humanness. What Iâm referring to is the saturation of distractions, which for me reached a crisis point during the pandemic, when my existence was almost entirely mediated by the internet. Just before the pandemic I had ditched my smartphone for almost a year, but got back on it during quarantine since I was always connected anyway. I became palpably aware of how the very rhythm of my being is regulated by technology designedâusing behavioral science researchâto be addictive by high-jacking the dopamine reward system. I think people dramatically overstate their âwillâ and âagencyâ in relation to technology.Â
Being hyper-connected made me feel my emotional life was becoming increasingly shallow, that I was just being numbly-entertained-toward-death, and pharmacologically adjusted to serenely endure this horrific existential condition while the world literally burns. As a poet, I find it very disturbing. For me, being a poet is not necessarily about the production of poetry, but about the training of a certain kind of consciousness: the dilation of perception and emotional states, the sensitization of oneâs antennae, the tuning of oneâs soul for a greater awareness of the mystery of existence, its splendors and absurdities.Â
CS: We have talked about literary production becoming a collaboration with artificial intelligence, so that the writers of tomorrow will essentially be prompt makers and editors, which input prompts into AI and then edit creative works based on the responses provided. What do you think this would mean for the future of literary culture and cultural production?Â
JW: I think we could soon reach a point where certain types of writing (screenwriting, journalism, newsletters, web content production) and certain para-literary activities (editing, proofreading, researching) could be fully or partially automated. Some say that the new job that will be created as a result of generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT will be âprompt writer.â There may come a day when plot-driven commercial fiction is written by AI with the help of prompt writers.Â
A lot of writers economically support their literary practice through various forms of commercial writing and editingâsome of those jobs might disappear. In recent decades, itâs already gotten so difficult to survive economically as a writer. At the same time, itâs gotten hard to survive in general, given how obscenely high rent is these days. You canât just scrape by on almost nothing and hope it works out at the end of the month by frantically combing your couch cushions and the pockets of dirty jeans for loose change and cash. You need good credit to even rent a place! On a societal level, art suffers when subsistence costs are highâit becomes more commercially driven, and artists become more âprofessionalized.â Â
CS: Do you think that AI will just stay as a mechanism that will help facilitate human writing of poetry but never become âthe artistâ? I anticipate there will be a shrinking in the distinctions between âthe artistâ and âthe editor.â
JW: Iâve already heard of writers and students using AI to help edit and develop their work, or generate ideas. But I donât really trust the aesthetic judgment of ChatGPT, ha!Â
CS: Iâm excited to see the mechanics of literary production transform. You are a bit more hesitant, why so? Are there any AI attempts at literature, which youâve seen already, that feel particularly noteworthy?
JW: Maybe on some deep level Iâm a basic bitch who has a sentimental attachment to the way âwritingâ has been done for nearly 5,500 years. From cuneiform clay tablets to computer keyboards, the writing process has actually changed very little for thousands of years. It was probably ripe for disruption. But Iâm ultimately disturbed by the collective effect it will have on language useâthe move toward a statistical norm and the treatment of language as purely informational. I had already started to fret about this when Gmail started autocompleting my emails. (ChatGPT is basically a sophisticated auto-complete that convincingly mimics understanding. This is why it âhallucinatesâ made-up citations and rattles off fake facts.)
Will the weird, jagged, irregular effusions of language gradually be purged as we drift toward the statistical average? I donât know, maybe I think of it as something akin to language eugenics. Perhaps Iâm hopelessly modernist in my view that language is not about transmitting information or even advancing a plot, but the wayward movement of a thought: the sentence as a technology of consciousness, with its serpentine twists and turns, perverse digressions, and rhythmic pulsations.
Iâve seen AI being used in the conceptual writing and art world for a while now. Some of it is cool and novel in a âparty trickâ kind of way (like the Twitter poetry bots I followed when I used to use Twitter), but Iâve yet to encounter AI work that Iâve been enamored with. I donât doubt that AI will (very) soon be able to produce really impressive work, and thatâs partly because itâs parasitic on past human creativity insofar as itâs trained on vast reams of linguistic data generated by humans.Â
CS: Can emotion or spontaneity ever be captured by an algorithm? Is there any way in which AI is like the subconscious (making connections between unrelated concepts, juxtaposing words in a way that pleases the ear and mind, using knowledge in unforeseen ways)?
JW: The AI can convincingly mimic emotion. Tell ChatGPT about your problems and you will feel like it really cares, like itâs really listening to you, just like you might feel when you are personally addressedâare interpolatedâby the language of advertising written in a voice of concern or understanding.
For nearly a century, artists have used aleatory methods to make connections and generate juxtapositions that get us beyond the limits of human consciousness, whether itâs the surrealist exquisite corpse practice, William S. Burroughsâs cut-up method, or John Cageâs use of the I Ching and other chance methods in his music compositions. AI could certainly be deployed to such ends. Yet LLMs like ChatGPT are designed to be âpredictableâ in the same way that autocomplete uses probabilities to predict the next word. I think unlocking a weirder side of AI might involve finding ways to break or fuck with it so it doesnât just generate the mediocrity of the average.
CS: Do you think collaborations between literary artists with artificial intelligence will create a new economy of poetry in the English speaking United States or will it fall into and transform one of the currently existing poetry economies (academia, spoken word, insta poetry)?
JW: How many poets do you know who can support themselves on their poetry alone? I think I know zero. (Maybe Lisa Robertson could count?) Mostly, I know poets who teach in the academy, poets who do astrology, poets who work as editors at publishing houses, poets who have office day jobs, etc. I donât think AI will change that. Maybe generative AI will create a glut of language that will make poets even more superfluous, ha!
CS: At large, poetry isnât very lucrative but this doesnât mean that it doesnât impact peopleâs livelihoods still. Why do you think it is important to think specifically about the intersection of poetry and AI?
JW: The thing I love about poetry is its uselessness, the way it is, with a few exceptions, superfluous to capital, difficult to commodify, gratuitous in its insistence on avowing that which has been marked valueless by our hyper-commercial culture. When I think of Sapphic lyrics or Homeric epics, I am reminded that poets once occupied a quite prominent social position, as keepers of history or ceremonial performers. In a culture oriented almost exclusively around lucre, thereâs not really a place for poetry. At a dinner party recently I tried to explain âwhat I doâ to entrepreneurs and realized I came across as âquaint,â that what I do will always register as doing nothing to those who use money as a metric to measure the value of a particular activity. Yet at the same time, the intense pressure to perform in our brutally competitive society has generated a hunger for poetryâpoetry as a space to preserve the incalculable and restore the part of us that has been destroyed by the soul-crushing dictates of capital.Â
On a conceptual level, itâs interesting that the things that make poetry so âdifficultâ and inaccessible to some peopleâitâs ambiguity, lack of clearness of meaning, context dependency, and attention to the non-semantic register of significationâis also what has made language such a tricky problem for AI developers. Language isnât simply a system of rules, which is why the statistical approach beat the linguistic rules-based approach in the natural language processing wars.
CS: What would you consider the start of collaborations between artificial intelligence and poets? Iâm thinking about Rupi Kaurs using instapoetry as a closed form that is responsive to algorithmic metrics. By responding to the algorithms that make her poetry go viral, she is in effect collaborating with AI, right? Iâm also thinking of Kien Liamâs book âExtinction Theoryâ that was written with the help of search engine responses. Maybe this depends on our definition of artificial intelligence?
JW: I suppose weâre always collaborating with technology. Since Iâve written most of my works longhand (my first draft of Carceral Capitalism was written on index cards), I often think about how the technology of the computer actually changes the texture of my thinking. Technology can also shape the âformâ of writingâthink of the way that the character limit of Twitter encodes a particular form. Weâve certainly reached a point where writers are not simply ârespondingâ to AI, but AI is directly shaping the written work.
CS: Do you think AI will influence some literary genres more than others and why? Iâm thinking commercial genres like popular non-fiction might be the first to change.
JW: I think writing that is informational (popular non-fiction) or plot-driven is ripe for automation. I donât know why, but whenever I ask ChatGPT to write poetry or imitate the style of a writer with an idiosyncratic style (Virginia Woolf, W. G. Sebald), the results are atrocious. Iâm sure it will improve quickly, though.Â
CS: The Writers Guild of America is currently about to strike, in part over how to renegotiate the use of AI in Hollywood. As a scholar of carceral studies, what do you think is an ethical approach to understanding intellectual property and the likeness of an artist, in the era of AI?
JW: Since Iâm fundamentally against private property, Iâm against intellectual property as well. Yet AI developers use the âfair useâ paradigm to claim they are justified in training their systems on copyrighted works. In my ideal world, we would not need to commodify our works in order to eat, but since we live in a market society, we must pay attention to the question of how writers are going to be able to put food on the table. The fact that generative AI is parasitic on the entire archive of human creativity is fundamentally a labor problem. Should AI be allowed to imitate living writers and artists, and will the imitations be commercialized at the expense of living creators? The legal architecture undergirding generative AI hasnât been worked out yet, but Iâm ultimately in favor of enshrining strong labor protections for living creators.
CS: How is AI going to redefine certain concepts, like originality and plagiarism? I think we have already seen some examples of this in the music industry, such as the AI generated songs using the voice of musicians like Drake. In poetry might it look like someone asking AI to create poems in Shakespearean sonnets but with the vernacular of lets say, Maya Angelou?
JW: The voice imitation software trips me out. I started doing research on voice surveillance in early 2019 and tested out some voice mimicking technology then. It was terrible. Now, it can replicate someoneâs voice with uncanny accuracy. The technology is evolving so rapidly.Â
I donât feel particularly attached to an idea of originality. Mixing, collaging, generating new things by constellating old thingsâitâs all part of the creative churn. I love it when art circulates and mixes in a way that is wild and free. But the question of how artists will support themselves when technology enables endless, free replicability is a question that needs to be addressed.Â
CS: This opens up the conversation of racial appropriation (and digital Black face) via AI. The literary world has a history of racial imposters. What might this look like when intersecting with AI?
JW: Since AI is ultimately a mimicry-machine, I think this is certainly a risk. I can imagine an author asking ChatGPT to rewrite a chunk of dialogue in, say, Black Vernacular English. (Although as someone who is opposed to the ownership model of culture and in favor of hybridity, I have complicated views on the idea of cultural appropriation in general.)
CS: How do you think the literary community, specifically the awards part of the community, might react if they discover that a writer has been generating their books in collaboration with AI?
JW: I think if itâs done covertly they will treat it as plagiarism rather than collaboration. Done overtly, it becomes a way to market a book. (Though I think the âAI bookâ is old-hat at this point.)
CS: In closing, are there any parallels that you see between what is happening now and the industrial revolution? I am thinking about the automation of labor and whether AI can help lead us to universal basic income, a post-work economy, or at least a reduced work week?
JW: There are definitely parallels with the industrial revolution, which put our species on this path of ever-accelerating accumulation (well, some say it all began with the Agricultural Revolution, though David Wengrow and David Graeber critique the agricultural theory of social inequality in The Dawn of Everything). Without a doubt, LLMs and generative AI will profoundly reshape the economy, leading some industries to collapse completely (the education technology company Chegg was the first to crash) while others are transformedâthat tendency toward creative destruction is an inherent feature of capitalism. Generative AI will make humans more âefficientâ and âproductive.â But what is all this efficiency for? Technology has been evolving at breakneck speed since the industrial revolution and we are still working just as long and hard. Efficiency has become our bondage. Once the logic of accumulation enters the bloodstream, it seems hard to stop, partly because accumulation is bottomless (until we hit a hard ecological limit) and feeds on itself. As the Austrian writer Robert Musil wrote in The Man Without Qualities, âWe have gained reality and lost dream. No more lounging under a tree and peering at the sky between oneâs big and second toes; thereâs work to be done. To be efficient, one cannot be hungry and dreamy but must eat steak and keep moving. It is exactly as though the old, inefficient breed of humanity had fallen asleep on an anthill and found, when the new breed awoke, that the ants had crept into its bloodstream, making it move frantically ever since, unable to shake off that rotten feeling of antlike industry.âÂ
I wish writers could just sit around and be dreamy instead of having to eat steak and keep moving. I do hope we one day arrive at a post-work society. It makes me sad to think that weâve tacitly accepted a system where we spend our lives toiling for the profit generation of the ownership class, squandering our short, precious life on this planet.Â

Numenera Campaign Concept: Gateway Terminal
Some thoughts for a Numenera Campaign, or possibly thoughts for an anthology of related Numenera Campaigns. Um. Okay. Has anyone here ever read the Heechee Saga, by Frederick Pohl? Specifically the novel âGatewayâ?
Because. I wanted a campaign concept that originated in the Steadfast, just to play on the established infrastructure and worldbuilding. But. A lot of my favourite bits of the Steadfast are maritime or coastal. And Numenera is about discovery, in a couple of big ways. And the Steadfast, specifically, is broadly analogous to medieval Europe, with a techno-religious papacy holding a collection of feudal kingdoms together. And thereâs the in-game category of âdiscoveriesâ, which are big pieces of prior world technology that are too big to be used by PCs and are of more worldbuilding impact, and one of the suggested discoveries is a âfully-functional hovertrainâ. So. Transport systems are a type of discovery you can make. Including portal systems, thereâs one that links the Steadfast to the Dawnlands, on the far side of Numeneraâs supercontinent, that has only recently been discovered. But letâs go back maritime, ourselves.
So. The starter setting is the Steadfast. Weâre a medieval society of nine kingdoms held together by a techno-papacy who has recently declared a crusade against our northern neighbours. We inhabit (though we donât know this) a relatively small portion of the southwest corner of a massive Pangea-like supercontinent that, aside from at least one known island archipelago, is the only landmass in a vast world-spanning ocean. And recently, very recently, somebody made a discovery within our kingdoms that might change everything.
We found a hidden automated ancient ferry terminal. On our own shores. That contains several prior-world oceanic vessels designed to go to unknown and pre-programmed destinations.
Has anyone read the Heechee Saga? Gateway, the novel, is about humanity discovering an asteroid that was hollowed out by the Heechee, an unknown alien race, and this asteroid contains hundreds of pre-programmed starships. Each ship has a destination database, but no translations, so you can set a destination, but no-one knows where it goes to, and trying to change destinations mid-flight has, after considerable trial and error, always gone horrifically. So. You get in, you set your destination, and you roll the dice on whether the destination or the trip itself is survivable. Maybe youâll find a viable habitable world. Maybe youâll pick a destination thatâs too far for that particular starship to reach. Maybe youâll pick a destination thatâs too far for your provisions to reach. Maybe youâll pick one thatâs lethal to humans, but was perfectly fine for Heechee. Maybe youâll pick the one starship thatâs secretly lethally broken after thousands of years without maintenance. You donât know. So if you choose to get in one of these ships, you are choosing to gamble your life on the potential, the vanishingly small potential, of survival discovery.
And Numenera ⊠Numenera is a setting about discovery. This world, this medieval Ninth World, is built on the strange, near-magical hyper-technology of a billion years of prior civilisations. Some spanned galaxies. Some rewrote the laws of reality. Some broke through to other dimensions. Some completely reshaped this planet in entirely literal ways. The known parts of the setting are a tiny corner of a single supercontinent on a world where literally anything could be waiting out there.
And I love the POV shift inherent in that. The medieval fantasy outlook of the current Ninth World layered over the mindboggling science fiction concepts of the prior worlds. And yes, this medieval fantasy world has adapted to the ruins of the ancients. Theyâve built around them, theyâve made use of many of them, theyâve sensibly stayed clear of others. They know that these things exist, and that theyâre vast and incomprehensible and also occasionally useful and potentially the sources of vast personal and political power, if they can be used right.
So going back to the Steadfast. Going back to this medieval collection of kingdoms, run by a papacy, perhaps not too far away from our historical Europe ⊠on the verge of the age of discovery? With all the potentially horrific political consequences that could have. And this setting discovers ⊠a gateway. An incredibly risky and potentially deadly gateway. To the entire rest of the unknown world. Or, well. At least some of it.
The thought I have for this is that someone, a small expedition, discovered a disguised artificial harbour carved back into what they thought was a known cliff face. Letâs say it was masked by hard light/holographic technology, so the cliff seemed fully real and physical and interactable, but if you could find the secret entrance, you could slip beyond it. Why was it disguised? Was it a military installation? Or was it an aesthetic consideration, to mask the environmental impact of the port behind a pretty hologram of the natural surroundings? Dealerâs choice. But thereâs an entire artificial cavernous port behind that hologram, carved back and underground from the cliff face. Maybe it has an ancient lock system to raise vessels up to sea level to sail outwards, giving us room to expand below ground and make it massive without overly disturbing the land on the surface above it.
It was the discovery of a lifetime, and there was more. This vast artificial harbour contained ships. Strange prior-world ships. That appear to be somewhat alive, or at least capable of speaking. And these ships are still operable. I want to say that someone tried to activate one. Perhaps the shipâs AI asked them to, for its own reasons. But someone activated one of the smaller ships. Because I want someone to have realised that the ships are pre-programmed. It moved on complete autopilot through the lock system, made it to the surface, sailed out past the holographic cliff face, and then kept going. And nothing they could do could stop it once it was activated. It sailed off westwards into the open ocean, and literally no one has seen it since. The only reason we know about it is that one or several of the team that activated the ship jumped overboard when they realised they couldnât stop it, and at least one survived to make it back to shore afterwards.
So. Hereâs where we are now. A team of ruin-delvers in a Steadfast kingdom have reported finding a vast coastal facility. This facility contains prior world ships that can be activated, BUT cannot be controlled. These ships have minds of their own and unknown destinations that theyâre pointed towards. And itâs possible that someone could board them, and discover what those destinations are.
I kind of want the ferry terminal to be in Ancuan. Specifically the Scorpion Reach peninsula. It does have the background for it: âThis sprawling peninsula is filled with the ruins of the prior worlds. Known for its weirdness and mysteries, it is frequented by explorers, discoverers, and numenera scholars.â Itâs full of weird shit and crawling with explorers, it would absolutely make sense for there to be teams in place to find this thing. But I want it to be in Ancuan because of the nearby presence of Kaparin and the Redfleets. An entire organisation of rogue pirate scientists and oceanographers. Because. They would jump on this. Not necessarily on the facility itself, or even the ships, the Redfleets donât care much for numenera, but because of the potential for oceanic exploration. Theyâve lost the capability to make their own submergine bioships now that their creator is dead. These ships have so much potential for them.
These ships have so much potential for a LOT of people. The facility is probably still broadly secret, but I think thereâs five factions in particular that have picked up on it, and itâs massive political potentials.
The first is obviously the Amber Papacy, the Order of Truth. An aeon priest was likely one of the initial discoverers, and this is the Orderâs whole deal. Prior world technology, understanding it for the betterment of all, and keeping hold of a political bombshell that could deeply damage the fragile peace between the kingdoms of the Steadfast. Theyâre going to be all over that.
Then the Convergence, the Orderâs eternal foes, to control this new technology for themselves and their own causes.
Then Ancuan itself, as a kingdom. Itâs theirs. Itâs within their borders. It could potentially open up trade and expansion corridors to gods know where, it could let their kingdom win an edge over the others, particularly nearby expansionist nations like the Pytharon Empire. Ancuan tends to be a very self-sufficient kingdom that doesnât pay a lot of attention to King Asour-Mantir, but he probably is interested in this discovery, and itâs potential ramifications.
The fourth is the Redfleets, because theyâre right next door, and if anyone saw that first ill-fated voyage of an unknown ship in the vicinity, it was probably them. And this ⊠this has so much potential for them. They want in.
And the fifth, I think, is the Sea Kingdom of Ghan. Because remaining the main source of maritime trade in the Steadfast is one of King Lairdâs overriding concerns. Heâs the one whoâs interested in expeditions to find the rumoured archipelago of the Rayskel Cays and set up trade with them. Maritime exploration is a big deal to him and his people, as well as making sure that theyâre the ones who go places first and set up trade routes with them. So if rumours reach him about a prior-world ship cache with pre-set trade routes, that would definitely be something heâd send people to investigate.
So thereâs a lot of people interested in sending people to investigate this new discovery, both the facility and the ships inside it. Thereâs people interested in controlling this facility. Thereâs people interested in breaking into it. Thereâs people interested in hijacking one of these ships and just seeing where it goes. Thereâs people interested in launching official and well-planned, well-provisioned expeditions on these ships. Thereâs people interested in investigating the rest of the facility itself, the ferry terminal. Does it have connections to other facilities? Could communication exist between them? Is there something in the facility that would allow them to learn or even change the destinations of the ships? Would it have a database of where itâs sending things?
So there could be a campaign here, or an anthology of linked campaigns. Does the party want to go on an expedition? Do they want to explore the facility? Do they want to play a group determined to destroy it, to prevent invite risk and destruction on the Steadfast, or do they want to play a team sent to stop that from happening? Would they like to play spies sent from various Steadfast political powers to learn about and potentially use this facility themselves? Do they want to play the aftermath of a successful expedition?
Which. On that subject. Where are these ships going? And, for that matter, how many ships are there, and what kinds?
Because Iâd say thereâs a couple of big ones. Maybe three? About the size of modern passenger ferries or small cruise liners. Thereâs a couple of ships in there that could hold small cities worth of people, and outfitting those would be a massive undertaking, especially when you donât know where or how far theyâre going. How would you provision them? And on the bigger ships, especially when self-driven, they can also function as their own mini-dungeons, facilities to explore in their own right, with potentially a lot of secrets in their bowels.
Then there can be several of various smaller types of vessel. Submarines? Research vessels. Maybe things analogous to coast guard cutters or small military patrol vessels. Each with their own unique challenges and purposes, and thus internal arrangements and uses. Exploring each ship and its secrets can be its own whole set of quests, trying to identify whatâs inside them all.
And then. If anyone wants to try activating them. If the PCs want to be sent on an expedition into the complete unknown. Where do these ships go? Some thoughts for that:
Short-range trips. Maybe some of the vessels, like the coast-guard equivalents, have patrol routes. Maybe there are facilities out there in the ocean very close to the Steadfast itself that no one knows about, and these ships can reveal them. Or some of them are automated ferries to relatively nearby areas. Say, in Lostrei? The lands north of the Cloudcrystal Skyfields that the Papacy has just declared a crusade on? You get on a ship and it sails you straight into enemy territory, what do you do? Does it sail you back? What does either your country or the enemy county do with that knowledge? Or maybe the ship sails south, past the Frozen Lands, into the strange polar seas. What do you find down there? Or does it go out to the Rayskel Cays or even other, unknown island chains, and thereby set up those potential trade routes the Sea Kingdom of Ghan wanted?
Long-range trips. What if one of the ships, probably one of the larger ones, is designed to circumnavigate the supercontinent? What if you get on this ship, and it literally circles your world. All that blank empty space on the map that you have no idea about, that in most cases, for an explorer from the Steadfast, you didnât even know was there? You get on this ship, and maybe youâre never coming back, but you will see wonders before you die. Or thereâs the open ocean. Thereâs all the wonders of the world away from the land. Is this continent the only one? If it is, whatâs out there in the vast uninterrupted ocean on the far side of the world? What kind of facilities would the peoples of incredibly technological prior worlds have put out there where there are no people to be hurt? If you have a planet where all the civilian inhabitants are on one half, what do you put on the other?
And then thereâs other sorts of trip. A lot of these, if weâre imagining a transport hub facility, would be known routes. The fully automated ships, sailing common routes to nearby or further afield locations. But maybe a couple, one or two, of these ships are not fully automated the same way. Maybe they have more independent AIs or other means of choosing their destinations. Maybe some of them are research vessels. Maybe theyâre designed to roam relatively freely, and just examine things. Iâm sure if the Redfleet could ID one of those, theyâd be delighted to take it over.
I know, this isnât really a set campaign as such, itâs more of a setting element that I want to throw into the world and then build probably several campaigns around. But. Itâd be cool, right? You could gauge what your players are vibing with. Have them pick a faction, the Redfleets or the Aeon Priests or the Sea Kingdom of Ghan. Or independent Ancuani pirates whoâve gotten wind. Do they want to play politics, or roll the dice on potentially vast exploration? Do they want to start small, just figuring out what one of these ships is? Or is it high exploration on an unknown vessel with potentially lethal lurking secrets after a million years without maintenance sailing out on a potentially one-way trip to god knows where? Are you a Redfleet crew bringing several of their own smaller submergines onboard for the finest oceanographic expedition ever mounted? Are you a small group of spies trying to infiltrate this facility on behalf of the Sea Kingdom of Ghan, or the Convergence? Are you a group of Aeon Priests delving into the bowels of the hidden port itself in search of secrets or databases or ship manufacturing facilities? Are you all members of a cult who want to take one of the huge ships and build a seafaring kingdom of your own, like Taracal, out in the wild blue yonder?
IDK, I feel like thereâs potential there, for a lot of things. I wouldnât mind playing around with the idea. Heh. An oceanic Numenera campaign centered on a lost prior world automated ferry terminal.
Numenera: The Gateway Terminal.

The Synergy of Digital Marketing and AI: Transforming the Future
Digital marketing has become the backbone of modern business strategies, enabling brands to reach global audiences with precision and efficiency. As this field evolves, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a game-changer, revolutionizing how companies engage with customers, analyze data, and optimize their campaigns. The integration of AI in digital marketing is not just a trend; itâs a transformative force reshaping the industry.
Personalization at Scale
One of the most significant contributions of AI to digital marketing is the ability to deliver personalized experiences at scale. Traditional marketing approaches relied heavily on broad segmentation, often leading to generic messaging. AI, however, enables hyper-personalization by analyzing vast amounts of data, including browsing history, purchase behavior, and social media activity. This data allows marketers to create tailored content and product recommendations that resonate with individual consumers, enhancing engagement and boosting conversion rates.
For instance, AI-powered recommendation engines, like those used by Amazon and Netflix, analyze user behavior in real-time to suggest products or content that match the userâs preferences. This level of personalization was unimaginable just a few years ago, but today, itâs a key driver of customer satisfaction and loyalty.
Enhanced Data Analysis and Decision-Making
AI has also revolutionized how marketers approach data analysis. In the past, analyzing large datasets was time-consuming and prone to human error. AI algorithms, however, can process and interpret data at unprecedented speeds, identifying patterns and insights that might be missed by human analysts. This capability allows marketers to make data-driven decisions with greater accuracy, optimizing their strategies for maximum impact.
For example, AI can analyze the performance of a digital marketing campaign in real-time, adjusting targeting and messaging based on the results. This agility not only improves the effectiveness of campaigns but also reduces costs by minimizing wasteful spending on ineffective tactics.
Automating Routine Tasks
Automation is another area where AI is making a significant impact. Tasks such as content creation, social media posting, and email marketing can be automated using AI tools. These tools can generate content, schedule posts, and even respond to customer inquiries with minimal human intervention. This frees up marketers to focus on more strategic activities, such as creative development and campaign planning.
Conclusion
The integration of AI in digital marketing is revolutionizing the industry, enabling unprecedented levels of personalization, efficiency, and effectiveness. As AI continues to advance, its role in digital marketing will only grow, offering new opportunities for brands to connect with their audiences in meaningful ways. Embracing this technology is no longer optional; itâs essential for staying competitive in todayâs fast-paced digital landscape.
