Hey Look At This Comic: Homestuck Beyond Canon (Again)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
you know that first time in The People's Joker where she's doing her "worst thing that ever happened to you" stand up gimmick, just having Poison Ivy recite their tragic backstory while Joker stands there getting blitzed out of her mind on drugs and laughing hysterically?
I felt that, lol.
Homestuck has this... tone that's always appealed to me, one that's sort of in that wheelhouse. So much of the humor in Homestuck is deeply goofy, while gradually drifting, like an unmoored boat, towards a waterfall with a bunch of sharp rocks at the bottom. that's, to an extent, just dark internet humor. I've been around the block, I grew up with Perry Bible Fellowship; Andrew's penchant for shock jokes wasn't new to me at the point where I hopped on the Homestuck ocean liner (they called it unsinkable!). but often its jokes structurally involve a kind of escalation from funny, to fucked up, and back to absurdity again, and that has both always been my sense of humor, and certainly my experience of personal catastrophe. and what makes Homestuck often so resonant is the way past that point of absurdity it finds a personal or thematic resonance.
I mentioned, in my last post like this, that for a while Beyond Canon felt unwilling to push the audience outside its comfort zone, and could come across as outright fawningly apologetic for stuff that, not to put too fine a point on it, I watched my friends put their hearts into before HS2's cancellation. I also mentioned in that post, though, that one moment a few updates ago made me sit up, stop skimming, and pay attention. this joke, specifically (cw for pet death and also pet suicide I guess?):
Tumblr media
this is pretty weird and morbid! what a fucked up little story! I love the structure of this joke. In a few lines we get this progression from a genuine exploration of Jade's traumatic experiences trying to live like a normal person on Earth C, which cascades into this weird, pretty upsetting anecdote. then it escalates further into the farcical image of the suicidal hamster. it's a propulsive joke, a vehicle with no one at the wheel, and structurally Rose and Kanaya's interjections underscore both this energy, and the true to life sense of a conversation-turned-frantic trauma dump. I've certainly both endured and inflicted a few of those in my life! and, of course, Kanaya's frustration acts as a second punchline to the scene, reminding us that the whole reason this argument is happening is cause Kanaya's mad that Jade fucked Rose behind her back. it's like if the Spongebob glass bones and paper skin gag was contextualized by cuckoldry.
that's enough to justify the joke, and it was enough to keep me actually reading rather than skimming like I had with earlier upd8s. it's a well formed gag that has sharp, uncomfortable edges while remaining, at least to me, very funny. that's Homestuck, or at least baseline writing sizzle Homestuck.
what pushed it over into more interesting territory for me, though, was the pages that followed, which delve deeper into Jade's choice to keep her and Rose's child "Yiffy Longstocking Lalonde-Harley" (pfftttthahahha) a secret. I love the art above of Jade passing Yiffy out through a window, menaced by shadowy claws all around. it's a fittingly fairytale image for the Witch of Space--a reminder of the weird multiple registers of this story about stunted adults who also happen to be universe-spawning gods. it also demands a serious reread of other elements of the chapter. Homestuck likes to operate on registers at once absurd and resonant, after all. like, Jade's comment about not wanting people to "bark at [Yiffy] while walking down the street", in the context of defending her action of impregnating another woman's wife, could be understood as her talking about specifically transphobic street harassment. it's just filtered through the Homestuckian absurd situation of Jade being a magical dog girl.
in that context, why have a whole riff about a suicidally lonely hamster? well, surely if there's a metaphorical pet dying of loneliness in the Homestuck Epilogues in particular, it's none other than Jade Harley. isolation is core to her narrative: one of the current demiurges of the metanarrative informs her that as a Space player lonely power is her destiny! of course this bizarre, disturbing, and unhinged anecdote would resonate with her to the point of becoming fixation. like, it's barely subtext right? not dying of loneliness is her stated reason for wanting to have a daughter. not wanting her daughter to suffer her same lifelong social isolation is her stated reason for keeping that daughter secret, even if it meant making a deal with a sugary devil.
it's that level of deeper resonance that makes the joke so characteristically Homestuckian, or Hussnasty if you will. I'm glad I jumped back on when I did. the writing feels more and more confident these days. which is great, because beyond this kind of sharp, multi-layered character driven humor, Homestuck's style is most defined by being unapologetically itself.

For today's secret, I have a secret for all of you: I'm working on another hypercomic, this time for Immanentize. I will be posting panels from that each thesis day until its release. Or until I run out of panels I can use for the prompts. Whichever.

Hey Look At This... Comic? The Timekeepers of Eternity
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Motion comics were a bit of a bust huh? Oh, there's examples here and there, especially when talking about independent weirdo hypercomics, of works that incorporated motion convincingly and compellingly, but most corporate offerings amounted to taking still images and having their panels slam across the screen, pile on top of each other arbitrarily, or fade into view one at a time accompanying voice acted lines--the worst of film, comics, and audiobooks combined. Easy enough to explain: paying people who work exclusively in print comics to do (or adapt) a "motion comic" just isn't going to result in much latitude or incentive for bold formal experimentation, nor does it play to the training of the artists handed the task.
On the other side, there's the real structure perverts, mad scientists of comics. They face the same problem as every other avant garde artist: how do you get paid? Where does your audience come from? Criticism for comics in general is underdeveloped; criticism for webcomics and hypercomics even more so. Launching what by necessity must be a more fine arts oriented career in what's still widely understood to be mass market commodities seems daunting, as does coaxing a mass audience out of its comfort zone.
It makes some sense, given all that, that one of the best showcases of the potential of motion comics would come not out of comics itself but the weird and heady film fan edit scene. Blessed with an abundance of material to work with (especially in the cases of franchises, miniseries, or films with extensive cut content or rereleased versions) fan editors have a latitude to screw around without having to produce a bunch of raw footage or drawings themselves (though, the nature of enthusiast projects does inspire people to do things like, say, redo all the special effects from Alien3).
There's certainly a mountain of frames to work with in the Langoliers miniseries from 1995. Probably an overabundance, actually. That's great for Aristotelis Maragkos, though, whose recut of the miniseries into the tight hour long experience The Timekeepers of Eternity needs a lot of raw matter.
I actually mean that literally: Timekeepers is a film produced by physically printing out photocopy versions of the miniseries' frames, manually altering them, re-photographing them, and re-cutting the audio to fit the new narrative. Its runtime is partially achieved by layering scenes onto each other, so actions happen in parallel, or characters expound on a subject while a pan of the environment fills in detail. Sometimes, astonishingly, footage of cloudy skies becomes an abstract 2001 style gradient as characters get lost in their own thoughts, or staring eyes from a close up rip eerily into a shot of a still landscape. What another compressing edit might discard, Maragkos collages back into the frame in unexpected ways.
This could be just a fun gimmick or novelty, and can occasionally come across as just a fun flourish on an otherwise kind of awkwardly acted and plotted original. But just as often Maragkos finds incredible possibilities in the strange hybrid medium. There's a shot early on of Toomey, the murderous time-obsessed business boy going through a breakdown, that blew my mind and immediately convinced me of the film's vision. Toomey, who pitched a tantrum when the plane failed to reach his board meeting in Boston, gets his nose nearly broken by another passenger. Outmatched, he retreats, resentfully, turning and walking back through the plane. As he does so, the film tears, creating a multiframe of instances of Toomey looking back, petulant tears in his eyes.
Tumblr media
What happens when you turn a film into a comic in this way? In a static comic, splitting up this action into a series of "prolonger" panels helps clarify small movements and draw out the action, but in a film that's not really necessary. we can just watch that sequentially in time, like we do in real life. What else does this breakdown do in a comic? It can heighten a moment, suggest a psychological intensity, a kind of distending of time or hyperreality. Isn't that exactly what's happening for Toomey? He retreats, literally--we watch him do it. Yet he remains in place simultaneously, staring, seething. He might physically go, but psychologically he is still rooted in place, boiling over with anger at his rough treatment.
Shortly after this scene, we discover the textual rationale for Maragkos's bizarre aesthetic endeavor: Toomey has a bizarre tick of his own, am almost eroticized need to stim by tearing and shredding paper. As he sits and stews after another confrontation with the rest of the passengers, he tears at a magazine, and the screen tears too, layers of the frame peeling back to reveal other elements of the scene, so that his tearing becomes the ubiquitous context for the other characters talking about him and around him.
Tumblr media
I have a lot more to say about this one so I'll cut the review short here and you can read the rest on my full blog. You can also read the rest of my Hey Look At This Comic reviews on tumblr, and support me on Patreon.

Three Updates
Firstly, I will be participating in Artfight this year with the characters from Life and Times. I am still focusing on the upcoming major title, of course, but having something to draw outside of work is a good stress reliever.
Tumblr media
Secondly, in a sort-of-fever inspired by revisting the early works of Daniel Merlin Goodbrey, yesterday I made a small non-canonical 'hypercomic' which is now hosted on my itch.io page. More information in the devlog post there. Since I am restricted to a mobile device at the moment, this is the best screenshot I can provide.
Tumblr media
Thirdly and least importantly, my to-do list for after completing the next major title now includes 'reworking Life and Times to the modern engine'. I've grown much more familiar with Stencyl to where the first four chapters of the game look like spaghetti code now, and I've made minor aesthetic improvements in the next title that I'd like to propagate. It's a big task, but also one that mostly involves just cranking the handle, so it'd be better suited for doing on an exhausted college brain while I ideacraft for any minor titles I hope to do.

people tend to interpret anakin as having been a character intended for tragic fall in the vein of hamlet or romeo, but i dont feel thats the case. i feel anakin was always intended to more so be a figure like oedipus or macbeth instead, and i know that might seem a strange distinction to make but hear me out
romeo and hamlet fall because of their own natures leaving them underequipped or unprepared to deal with the situations they are thrust into. romeo falls in love with a rival house member and acts foolishly and impatiently upon that love which brings calamity upon everyone when keeping that passion in check might have saved lives. hamlet is tasked by his fathers ghost to bring justice for his murder, but because of hamlets own hesitations and reservations in acting the situation becomes worse bringing calamity upon everyone when swift decisive action might have saved lives. they fall because their otherwise positive traits, romeos romantic passion and hamlets gentle and scholarly nature, cause them to make the wrong decisions in the situation.
oedipus and macbeth fall because they are the instigators of their own demise out of misplaced feelings of pride or greed. oedipus leaves his adopted family, kills a traveler on the road, bests the sphinx, and marries into the leadership of thabes out of pride in his own abilities and status as a great iconic man. his foretold fate would obviously put a damper on that, so he seeks to defy his fate thereby instigating his own doom. he kills the traveler who is in fact his biological father because his pride wont allow him to let the unknown traveler pass first. he beats the sphinxs riddle to show off how clever he is. he becomes thabes ruler by marrying his biological mother because thats obviously what he deserves. its only when plague threatens to destroy thabes that hes forced to confront the truth, one that he refuses to let rest because his pride and reputation rest upon finding out that truth even though he knows finding out the truth will in fact destroy him anyways. thats where the tragedy in oedipus rex stems from, an otherwise great man who lets his flaw dominate his life and not only hasten but worsen his doom as a result.
macbeth kills the king and usurps the throne because of his belief that he deserves it for all that hes done and won as a general and lord, because he is the best of the kings men he feels he deserves to rule and its destiny anyways so why not claim it now. lady macbeth certainly pushes him forward, but macbeths the one who goes full ham with it in essence, because its macbeth who makes the leap to then murder banqou and his sons in order to thwart destiny. and this backfires because banqous son escapes and macbeth slips further into tyranny as more aspects of the prophecy become fulfilled, such as the trees moving or macduff revealing he was born via a c section. because macbeth felt he was due the reward of rulership and lineage as a great king after being a great warrior, general and lord, he let his ambition turn to greed and thus hasten and secure his own doom.
anakin choses to side with palpatine because he believes palpatine is the only one capable of saving padmes life in childbirth and is thus the only way he can avert destiny. he lets that understandable concern and fear for losing someone close to him mutate into a fear of loss, a paranoia against everyone and everything conspiring against him, a dangerous self righteousness that only anakin knows best. and palpatine offers reassurances and platitudes to that end, that the jedi are conspiring against anakin, holding him back. heres jolly ol papa palpatine just trying to help anakin by forcing the jedi council to include anakin as a member, but there goes the mean ol jedi council not granting anakin the rank of master even when hes on the council. there there, palpatine wont let those bullys on the council make you look like a fool anymore, hes your friend unlike those jedi meanies. has papa palpatine ever told lil anakin of the tale of dark plageus the wise? and so anakin listens because thats what he wants to hear, he builds up a narrative in his head, and he helps usher in a tyrannical empire because the jedi were obviously already against him to begin with, and its all for padmes sake anyways she'll understand. oh, she doesnt and is in fact horrified by your actions? and obi wans here? clearly shes turned against you and is an ungrateful enemy, but no padme would never do that. its clearly obi-wans fault whos been holding you back from day one, whos been in on the whole plot against you this entire time! and its only when the dust settles and you find out padme died anyways despite all your efforts to subvert destiny, that you in fact were the one to kill her and bring about that same prophecy... as far as anakin knows anyways. point being, like macbeth and oedipus, anakins fall is more so facilitated by an instigation of his own demise due to a crippling flaw that overtakes his greatness. macbeths is greed, oedipus's is pride... anakins i would say is fear, maybe envy even.
