I had a whole bunch to say about this but I think it's just better if I sum it up as me loving some good toxic yaoi. And yes I WILL be flip flopping between making silly sweet art and angst art. These men are just built like that me thinks.

Batman Volume 3, Issue 38

A little boy with a pathological obsession with Bruce Wayne has his parents assassinated by his "loyal" butler, and frames multiple rogues for it, in order to give him the same origin as Bruce Wayne, so he can be Bruce Wayne.

Look at Matthew Warner. A child who's murdered 4 different people. A boy insulting his legacy. A boy who attacks Batman. A child committing complicated, planned criminal acts in addition to his murders.

A child with severe mental illness. A child with adults in his life who enabled and encouraged him to commit horrific violence. A child ill enough to self harm in excessive ways. A child who wants Bruce Wayne's attention and approval.

Bruce recognizes the Boy is sick. There's no indication here that he uses unnecessary violence against Matthew. He doesn't treat Matthew like a criminal, he treats Matthew like a boy with criminal insanity.

Look at Jason Todd. A mass murderer. Wearing the Bat symbol and committing murders. Who attempted to murder Bruce and his family several times. Who runs organized crime syndicates.

A boy who's suffered severely traumatized, both throughout complex trauma in his early childhood, and intense trauma of his death (whether the Lazarus pit caused his violence and rage is up for debate, but its almost unnecessary considering the depression, delusions & hallucinations, and PTSD that he undeniably has). A teenager who was sexually abused by an adult who enabled and encouraged his violent predisposition. A boy who wants to know if Bruce Wayne ever loved him at all. Who wants his dad to murder him to prove a point, and who wears a bomb on his head.

Bruce repeatedly treats Jason like a criminal first, his son second, and a deeply traumatized and mentally ill young man almost never.

Obviously, Jason was already a young adult by the time Bruce met him. Obviously Jason was far more dangerous to both Bruce and others than Matthew Warner.

But still....why is Bruce so much kinder to a boy he doesn't know than to his son?
