frozen and cooked, bitter and sweet, fire and water

When Fak and his bro are blocking Claire from going in the kitchen, before they admit he's stuck in the fridge, they tell her he's frozen and cooked. He's frozen with Claire and cooked for Sydney.

Inside the fridge when he stares at the tape labels of the radicchio and fennel (thanks op!) he saddens for a moment but then he smiles and chuckles and contemplates, because that's what he and Syd were cooking in his apartment before he ditched her for Claire. I just need a moment to fully realize that while he's stuck in that fridge in his trauma response and castigating himself, he also has this little moment of smiling and chuckling. After the Claire voice message he's back to trembling, feeling guilty, and in his trauma.

So, I know some think it's about the torn tape or the mispelling of radicchio and his obsessiveness, but why specifically radicchio and fennel and why does he have a little laugh? These are strong ingredients that need to be handled artfully. Cooking radicchio tempers its bitterness. Fennel can be a bit bitter but not as much, and it's also sweet. (Maybe fennel would have made that radicchio dish work better?) Carmy frequently has small smiles and laughs with, and thinking of, Sydney--his bitterness is getting cooked out and sweetened, they're getting the ingredients right, they're a slow burn.

Cooked but not burnt, though. Fire is passion, but it's also destructive. When Carmy goes to light his cigarette on the stove and starts a fire, I believe that's his rage that he inherited from Donna (bitterness, too), and it will destroy him if he doesn't learn to manage it. Carmy gets frozen but he also has fiery rages and he tries to suppress both of these extreme protective states with quiet, obsessive focus and pushing out people and pushing out his triggers. The freeze response will activate rage, and rage will activate freeze. These cycle together.

So in the fridge he recommits to being "psychotic" (disconnect from reality) and obsessively focused in his head about all the details (the tape does signify that, also what kind of mustard), and not try to receive or provide amusement and enjoyment or be out in the world with people and relationships. Then he and the restaurant will be ok. But that kind of protection--living in your mind and not in the reality of chaos and emotions--doesn't really work.

Carmy doesn't need to suppress or disconnect from his rage or his panic or trauma, but he needs to coax it out and process his feelings. To actually feel his sadness and grief, otherwise it will come flooding out from the other end (toilet water in multiple scenes). Water that's been blocked can be destructive, too. Often what's driving these extreme protective responses are simply feelings that weren't allowed and didn't get any warmth or care over and over again--sadness, disappointment, confusion, and anger can become depression, bitterness, dissociation, rage. (not to oversimplify, especially depression)

When Sydney is working on her "elements" dish with Tina, it's too busy and too much, there's two kinds of fire also (the passion and the rage.) The dish is not coming together, the elements are overdone and not balanced. Sydney and Carmy need each other to work on these dishes together. And when they do get together they warm up, they smile, they laugh, they share themselves, they process their feelings and their histories, they harmonize. They also cool off with the ASL I'm sorry.

Chaos is unavoidable in the kitchen, and in love, and in friends and family. Chaos is reality. He can have chaos, but thoughtful. He can have warmth, he can cook and be cooked. I want to see more of the element of water--the cleansing tears. But in the meantime he can pour hot water on frozen grapes.

What advice would you give to an aspiring young writer hoping to become a published author?

This is a tough question since I don't think I'm either accomplished, skilled, or old enough to be giving advice ahahaha but also I'm not really sure what area you'd want guidance in?

As in, do you want to know how to improve your craft? How to navigate publishing?

I guess, if I were talking to my younger self, here's what I would say:

Read the books in the dark part of the library with broken spines and yellowed pages and faded words. The boring books. The books that couldn't be published today. The offensive and forbidden stuff.

You'll learn more about writing from Literature classes than Creative Writing classes.

Ask yourself, "What's the purpose of this line?" for every single line. Sometimes the purpose is simple: "Because I think it's funny/hot." That's okay.

Want to traditionally publish? Invest in your appearance and your social media presence but don't lose your identity trying to people-please. Understand that most people who traditionally publish got there through nepotism. It's a business run by white women. Understand their sensibilities before submitting.

Want to self publish? Get active on social media and befriend other authors. Understand that indie readers like adult content

Don't write a sad moment and then have the characters tell jokes to break the tension. Let the tension hang.

Kill all of your characters, not physically.

Learn from movies. Learn from folk tales. Learn from how your friends tell stories from their life.

Who is the narrator? Why are they telling this story? Why are they telling it like this?

Write a whole draft without going back and re-reading what you wrote. Editing will be tough, but at least you'll have a finished draft.

Writing is 90% editing. Give it 3-5 rounds of edits. Be harsh with yourself. Then kind.

Make note of plot points/objects — give each one an introduction, a mention, and then a Use. For example, a knife is introduced in chapter 3, it's mentioned again in chapter 5, and then someone is killed with it in chapter 8.

If you feel like, "I don't want to write this, I'm not good enough," know that you'll never be good enough. And you're never going to write a perfect book. That doesn't exist. Accept that it'll be flawed and make peace with that.

"But what if I get older and see my current work as juvenile/bad?" It can never be bad. It'll be a portrait of who you were when you wrote it. Your heart and your skills.

My professor once urged me to never, ever use cliches in my prose — as in "heart dropped," or "tongues battling for dominance." I wouldn't go so far as to ban them. But be aware of them, ask yourself if you could come up with something better.

This might be a wacky list but this is basically the rulebook I would give my younger self. If you have any hyper specific writing questions, I can try to help with that too! But, again, I'm not an expert.
