It’s Ipsy time! Up for review are my Ipsy bag for December, an Ipsy deal, and an Ipsy shopper purchase (not pictured). I’m really loving Ipsy, and the deals are pretty good, but not impressed with the shopper option. I didn’t read through, so didn’t realize the 50% discount on what I purchased was a cashback offer so they send the check to you later. If you cancel Ipsy before you get the money, you lose the cashback. To me, the whole cashback thing is kind of useless (unless it’s like ebates or something): if you’re going to offer me a cashback discount, just give me the discount. So I’m unlikely to use the shopper option again, though this time is giving me a chance to try something I’ve been wanting for a bit now.
In my bag this month: First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser ($5), a Luxie  Precision Shader Onyx Brush 239 ($14), Pixi by Petra  Mesmerizing Mineral Duo in Orchid Ornament ($10), Smashbox Legendary Lipstick in Legendary ($15), and Lottie London Lottie Lacquer in Riot ($8). Total Value: $52. Really pleased with this month’s bag in general, and the bag itself is gorgeous. (On a side note: the three bags I’ve kept so far are all “special occasion” bags that I don’t want to just toss in my purse but use as a night out kind of bag.)
The deal I picked up for $10 was the Glamour Dolls x Lisa Frank collab, which includes an Eyeshadow in Stargazer ($6.99), the Bitten & Bronzed Matte Bronzer ($4.99), an Angled Blush Brush ($4.99), and a Blending Brush ($4.99). Total Value: $21.96. The Shopper deal was for the First Aid Beauty 5-in-1 Eye Cream.
Let’s get to the reviews, starting with the bag!
First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser :: I’ve reviewed this before, and was so happy to see this in my bag. A little goes a long way, so this sample will last a bit. It sits in my shower.
Luxie  Precision Shader Onyx Brush :: This is a really nice brush. The handle is pretty sturdy, the  bristles are soft, and it picks up a decent amount of shadow and applies it really well. I can pack or brush easily. It isn’t as small as a detail brush, so while not as big as a larger shadow brush, it doesn’t quite count as a precision brush to me. Still it fits well in the inner corner of my eye. Very pleased!
Pixi by Petra  Mesmerizing Mineral Duo :: The colors in the pan are pretty, one with a light pinkish sheen, the other a nice purple-burgundy. The pigmentation is pretty decent, but the lighter color would have disappeared into my skin if it wasn’t a shimmer, and the darker berry ended up more brownish on my lid, which is disappointing. I was really loving the burgundy in the pan. Overall, the duo is disappointing but generally usable though not particularly spectacular. I’m giving this to ProjectBeautyShare.org for someone who might get more use out of the colors than I would.
Smashbox Legendary Lipstick :: This looks more red than it actually is, and is a bit too pink for my tastes. It applied a bit more sheer than I expected, but it builds up well.  It’s creamy, smooth, and very beautifully glossy. I did try to wear it alone, but eventually put a darker color over it because it really is a bit too pink (and orange under  toned pink at that, I much prefer blue under tones in my pinks and reds). I then tried it over a darker color and liked it much better that way, so it got saved from the PBS box just because it’s easy to layer and adds a light, bright glossiness to other colors.
Lottie London Lottie Lacquer :: The color in the bottle look really dark blue, but is much lighter when applied and has a touch of shimmer in it—it really is very pretty. And it holds up pretty well too, even to my dish washing (which is something I need in my polishes). when it does start to come off though, it tends to chip in such a way that it develops bits that catch on things. Still, really like it!
Next up, both the weekly deal and the Shopper purchase.
Lisa Frank Eye Shadow :: This is a beautiful, shimmery, golden brown that actually works on my lids. Browns can be problematic for me since a number of them disappear into my skin. This is actually pretty close to my skin tone, but the shimmer helps it show up and brings out my eyes. However, at the suggestion of my daughter, I tried it as a highlight, and I love using it that way more than I do as a lid color.
Bitten & Bronzed Matte Bronzer :: This is a little light for me and tends towards a warmer tone than I usually use. I had to build it up to get it to show on my skin. I think this may be more suitable for me in the summer, when a warmer tone will enhance that sun-kissed look, though I’m concerned it might end up too light since my perma-tan tends to darken at that time. We’ll see how this works then.
Lisa Frank Angled Blush Brush :: This brush is rather small and feels a little cheap (which, yea, they really are)—where the gold ferrule meets the handle feels a little loose, and the whole thing is lightweight (VERY lightweight). It worked for applying highlight, but is too small for blush or contour, and the bristles are too soft for the way I apply blush. I don’t think I’ll be reaching for it much, but it is very pretty.
Lisa Frank Blending Brush :: Like the blush brush, this brush is on the lighter side, but it’s soft and picked up and distributed shadow pretty well. I like it better than the angled brush, so am more likely to reach for it. That said, the quality isn’t as good as even most of my cheaper brushes, and the lighter weight is off putting (elf brushes may be cheap, but they still have a decent weight to them that was missing from this). I do like the bristles and how it applied the shadow, so we’ll see if it gets used or not. If not, it’s a pretty display brush.
First Aid Beauty 5-in-1 Eye Cream :: This was a much smaller container than I expected considering the price, but like most FAB products, a little goes a long way (seriously, for each eye, just one tiny drop covers it). My eyes were recovering from irritation with another product when I started using this, and the cream didn’t aggravate the issue. It initially leaves the area under the eye slightly greasy feeling, but it absorbs quickly and the feeling goes away. It claims to smooth, brighten, even out tone, nourish and moisturize. Haven’t been using it very long, but I think I may be seeing some improvement in texture under my eyes, if nothing else. May have to update on this one later.
Overall, domy tried these and is very pleased with everything this month. Even the disappointments weren’t that bad, especially with only one item already slated for the PBS box (and it was actually okay, just not good for my skin tone).
Upcoming reviews will include an Urban Decay mini-haul, Glossybox, Lola Beauty Box, a new box called Yes Oh Yas, and a number of freebie samples that will likely go into 3 or 4 separate posts with a few of them not showing up this month. The three beauty boxes will be unboxed on my YouTube channel in a triple threat video before they show up here. Hoping to get that up before the end of the week (waiting for Glossy to show up).
In the meantime, I hope you and yours have a wonderful holiday, whichever one you celebrate. :)

Here’s a fun little commission I did for someone who wanted a drawing in memory of a beloved stuffed leopard doll they had. I think it came out nice and I like how the flowers look, it’s very bright and child-like. Kind of channeling my inner Lisa Frank
Commissions are open, btw! Both traditional and digital to help pay for my college text books which are looking to be about $750 if I only rent used books.

For the Beginner Pagan, Wiccan, & Witch: Tips & Resources to Get Started
A question that is asked often in the pagan community is, “how do I become Wiccan/Witch/Pagan?” And while there are literally hundreds of online resources and books, the beginner pagan is seemingly more confused than ever. I receive emails every day on this exact topic. So, to simplify it for you and for me, I decided to write out all of my advice in one place. Here’s where to start in Wicca, Witchcraft, and Paganism, including beginner witchcraft books, pagan books, Wicca resources and simple steps to get you started on your unique pagan path.

Read & Study: Books and Online Resources
Keep a Record: A notebook or journal serves as grimoire or Book of Shadows
Get Outside
Practice: moon ritual, meditation, celebrate sabbats, divination
Altar Set Up: free & cheap ideas, tools, etc.
1. Read & Study
You might be tired of being told this, and I know it’s beaten into people’s heads when they first start out, but there’s a reason everyone gives you this advice. Wicca, witchcraft, and paganism are all separate (but sometimes combined) spiritual paths, and therefore you need to read to determine what’s what as far as the basics go. If you come to a FaceBook group or live coven and ask what’s the difference between Wicca, Witchcraft, and Paganism, they’ll almost always tell you that you haven’t done enough preliminary research. The information is out there. I promise. Use Google. It is your friend. The resources available to you for free are ENDLESS. When I first started, I didn’t have the internet. I had books from thrift stores. And I had my own drive and will to practice and forge my own path. The internet makes it SO easy for the beginner pagan!

Beginner Witch, Wiccan, Pagan Topics to Study
When I say “study” in the above heading, I mean to read, write it down, and also practice what you study. The topics I typically suggest for people to study include:
moon phases and magical associations
the Wheel of the Year and sabbats
the four elements
gods and goddesses
ancestors
mythology
pagan history
crystals
herbs
These are some basic topics to learn. You will find other topics you’d like to study along the way. These just scrape the tip of a massive pagan iceberg of knowledge! Don’t just research and write these things down…get out of your comfort zone and PRACTICE them.
2. Keep a Record
In addition to reading and studying, you. Must. Keep. A. Record. This means using a cheap spiral notebook, a fancy journal, a composition book, whatever you’d like, to serve as your spiritual journal (a.k.a. grimoire or Book of Shadows). The Book of Shadows or grimoire is used to document your spiritual journey, as well as basic magical knowledge, spells, sabbats, etc. It can be as detailed and organised as you’d like. Or, if you’re like me, I literally just write things as I go along and flip back through my grimoire later. Not the most organised way, but hey, I’m a Sagittarius. Whatever works for you, do it. But WRITE it down! This way you can review your notes as well as have a chronological record of your journey.
3. Get Outside
In the majority of pagan paths, the focus is on Mother Earth. We read about nature, plan rituals to include nature, set up an altars to honour nature, its time to get outside…in nature! Get outside as much as possible – it is the core of your new path. Go for walks in the park or around the neighbourhood. Sit outside on your balcony while you drink coffee in the morning. Take a break at work and go for a walk. During your free time? Go outside. When you’re stressed out? Go outside. There’s so much to learn just from being outside and experiencing it with all of your senses. Watch for different animals and insects. Where’s the sun or moon? Do you see any special trees, plants, or flowers? Do you hear the wind blowing through the trees? Birds? What do you smell? Record any significant moments you have outside. Sometimes these moments are signs from the Universe.
Tumblr media
The Author feeling like a dryad!
4. Practice
You’ll never gain experience with something unless you practice and actually get out there and DO IT. Right? Paganism, Wicca, and Witchcraft are the same way. A lot of people want to read and research and write about it, but are afraid to actually try it. Give it a try. While a new spiritual path or religion can be intimidating in the beginning, Wicca and Paganism are nothing to be afraid of. They are very active spiritual paths and you will be rewarded more if you get off the couch and practice something you’ve been studying!
Beginner Pagan & Wiccan Rituals to Try:
A simple candle spell
Make a protection spell bag
Make a magical herb-infused oil
Set up an altar to honour a new god or goddess
Divination like tarot, oracle, runes, scrying
Give offerings to your new god or goddess
Cleansing herbal bath on the New or Waning Moon
Plan and start a new tradition on the next Sabbat
Helpful Magical Tools for the Beginner Pagan
First of all, tools are there to help you direct your energy and amplify it. Some practitioners will tell you that tools have no power, that you have all the power. I’m not going to tell you that, because I am an animist and I believe herbs, crystals, animals, etc. have their own consciousness and when used in magic or ritual, their power is channelled to intensify it. That being said, you don’t have to have ANY tools at all. Your inner power and the universe is plenty! Keep in mind, most of these you can find in nature (in your backyard/forest/beach), or you can find them at the dollar or grocery store!
Candles:  votives, tapers, bell candles, tealights, etc. (white is an all-purpose colour that can be substituted for any other colour)
Chalice:  literally like a wine cup or stemmed champagne glass works great, if you don’t want to splurge on an expensive one!
Athame:  I used an old wood-handle kitchen knife for YEARS. Doesn’t need to be fancy.
Bowls and Baskets:  to hold offerings on your altar or to use when you harvest herbs and other natural items (Dollar Store and thrift stores or what you have on hand); bowls can also hold water and salt (to represent elements water and earth for Wicca)
Stones & Crystals:  lots of people love crystals and stones but you don’t need to buy all the sparklies to use them in your magick or on your altar – simply use a river stone, a piece of coral from the beach, or a rock from some place you feel drawn to!
Herbs:  grow your own easily in a sunny windowsill or in your own garden (all you need is a bag of soil and some seeds…truly) or buy from the grocery store (your kitchen spice cabinet is FULL of magical ingredients!)
Incense & Incense Burner:  find sticks or cones and burners at a local store for cheap (5 Below, Health Food Stores, etc.)
Other Natural Items (FREE):  feathers, branches, flowers, roots, seashells, pinecones, acorns, seed pods, etc.
5. Set Up Your Altar
You might be thinking, I can’t set up an altar! I don’t have the money! See the section above. Most of the items on your altar can be found in nature or purchased for cheap…or even made! You don’t need a huge table or cabinet. A shelf on your bookshelf will do. So will a part of your kitchen counter. IF you live with someone who doesn’t understand or condone your pagan path, you can always start a “portable altar”. This is an altar that is kept in a box under the bed or in the closet and can be taken out when you feel comfortable or taken to the local park with you, etc. No one will ask questions because it won’t be out for anyone to see it. AND you have the added bonus of travelling with it too (depending on the size of it).
I recommend deciding what you want your altar to do for you. Are you honouring a specific god or goddess? Your ancestors? Just the universe or mother earth? Are you forgoing the god/goddess thing altogether and just want to use it for magical endeavours? Figure out your purpose for the altar (this can always change over time, too). Then add things to it that suit your purpose. Items to represent the four elements (water, salt, stones, seashells, feathers, candles, incense, etc). Maybe a picture of the god or goddess you honour. Or a statue if you feel like splurging. Solely using it for magic or meditation? Candles, jars, bottles, mirrors, etc. can be placed on your altar. Literally WHATEVER you want to put on it, you can! No one’s telling you otherwise. That’s the great thing about Paganism.
It’s a Learning Process!
Again, this is practice, you don’t have to be perfect at any of it! You are a beginner, and even the most experienced witch or pagan still makes mistakes. We are human, after all. The point is that you acknowledge the mistake and try to learn from it so you don’t make the same mistake again. BUT even if you do, the Universe or your god or goddess will probably send some kind of sign to remind you to try harder next time! Any true witch will tell you that witchcraft and paganism are lifelong journeys that require lifelong dedication to self-education and drive. For those who have been pagans for fifty plus years, ask them and I’ll guarantee they are still learning! If you meet anyone in the pagan community who says they know it all, run away screaming. Follow your own path and take your time walking it.

Best TV of 2019 so far
Back to Life
Daisy Haggard’s downbeat gem took on a tough topic – a woman’s return to her home town after a stretch behind bars – and turned it into a meditation on grief, regret and the passing of time, though with enough gags to keep things zipping along.
What we said: A few episodes into Back to Life, I felt like pushing it away in protest. “No, no!” I cried inwardly. “It’s too much! It’s too good!” Read the full review
Barry
In its second season, this black comedy about a hitman who catches the acting bug took its story into darker territory, with Barry’s attempts to extricate himself from his past life only dragging him further into oblivion. Things aren’t going to end well.
What we said: Though it’s a comedy rather than a thriller, Barry replicates much of what made Breaking Bad irresistible. Read more
Broad City
After five virtually flawless sitcom seasons, Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson’s millennial kweens went out in the same way they came in: with gross-out gags, madcap surrealism and one of the greatest on-screen friendships in TV history.
What we said: This season has given Abbi and Ilana the best possible send-off. It has been joyful, silly and wild, and while it feels like the perfect and necessary time to wrap up their adventures, it is poignant that they’ve done so by reminding you just how good those can be. Read more
A fitting, shocking end ... Catastrophe. Photograph: Channel 4
Catastrophe
Another comedy that went out on a high, Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney’s tale of floundering parents managed to deliver more home truths about the family unit, pay fond tribute to late guest star Carrie Fisher – and offer up one of the most shocking endings in recent TV history.
What we said: From first to last, Catastrophe has been an unremitting triumph. Read the full review
Chernobyl
Already sitting atop IMDb’s top 250 TV shows list before the final episode has even aired, Sky and HBO’s restaging of the Soviet nuclear disaster captures the ineptitude, corruption and horror at its core.
What we said: Chernobyl is a disaster movie, a spy movie, a horror movie, a political thriller, and a human drama, and it spins each plate expertly. The terror is unflinching and explicit, and its images of burned bodies collapsing into putrid decay are impossible to forget. Yet it never feels shocking for the sake of it, only as haunting and horrible as its subject matter demands. Read more
Finally ... David Attenborough lays bare our greatest threat in Climate Change: The Facts. Photograph: BBC/Polly Alderton
Climate Change: The Facts
After years spent hinting at the damage done to our planet by the climate crisis , David Attenborough finally laid out the threat in all its magnitude, in a documentary that may just have turned sceptics into believers.
What we said: This is a rousing call to arms. It is an alarm clock set at a horrifying volume. Read the full review
Dead Pixels
E4’s comedy accurately captured the loneliness and mundanity, but also the sense of community, that comes with picking up a controller. All that, and it was as addictive as an all-night Fifa session to boot.
What we said: This wickedly entertaining new sitcom may have been inspired by the massive success of online games like World of Warcraft but, thankfully, you are not required to know your Azeroth from your elbow to enjoy it. Read more
Derry Girls
One of last year’s surprise hits, Lisa McGee’s Northern Irish comedy didn’t let things slip in its second season, with its quartet still finding teenage kicks in the midst of the Troubles. The scene in which teens from both sides of the sectarian divide unleashed a barrage of stereotypes about each other (“Protestants hate ABBA!”) is among the year’s funniest.
What we said: Derry Girls’ magic remains intact. The evocation of the 90s is as lightly done as ever (Elizabeth Hurley is fleetingly referenced – “She’s a total ride, but she paperclips her frocks together”) and the Troubled setting never overwhelms but simply throws into relief the ordinariness of the girls’ lives in the middle of extraordinary depths of conflict. Read the full review
Don’t Forget the Driver
Bleak comedy … Toby Jones in Don’t Forget the Driver Photograph: BBC/Sister Pictures
Pulling off a state-of-the-Brexit-nation series looked a tall order, but Toby Jones’s understated comedy-drama was taller, finding humour and pathos in its tale of a coach driver who discovers a refugee hiding in his wheel arch and a body washed up on the beach.
What we said: If it is a comedy, it is one with the bleakest tragedy at its heart. But whatever label you put on it, it is a fine, fine piece of work. Read the full review
Fleabag
Back for its second (and, as it turned out, final) outing, Fleabag added a hot priest into the already heady mix of biting wit and family dysfunction – and it built to a heart-rending ending with a wedding, a mad dash to the airport … and a fox. Unforgettable.
What we said: Series two raised the bar. Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s risks were so impressive all one could do was shake one’s head in appreciation. Read the full review
Game of Thrones
Unquestionably the TV event of the year ... Game of Thrones. Photograph: HBO
Did the gargantuan fantasy drama stick the landing in its final season? That’s an argument for the comments section, but both in the scale of its six episodes, and the fevered discussion they prompted, it was unquestionably the TV event of the year.
What we said: The ending was true to the series’ overall subject – war, and the pity of war – and, after doing a lot of wrong to several protagonists, it did right by those left standing. When you play the Game of Thrones, you win or you die. Overall, I think, it won. Read the full review
Gentleman Jack
Sally Wainwright travelled back in time for her latest piece of thrillingly human Yorkshire drama, with this real life tale of Anne Lister. Suranne Jones has received rave reviews for her portrayal of the 19th-century industrialist and diarist, who developed a code to hide her lesbianism.
What we said: It’s Regency Fleabag! Because the heroine occasionally breaks the fourth wall and exteriorises her inner monologue. But it’s set in Halifax in 1832, so it could be Northern Jane Austen. Then again, it’s about Anne Lister, who has been dubbed the first modern lesbian, so maybe it’s Queer Brontë ... You can afford to have a little fun with Gentleman Jack; Sally Wainwright clearly has. Read the full review
Ghosts
The Horrible Histories team offered up more unashamedly silly comedy with this spirited sitcom about a group of ghouls going to war with the new owners of a crumbling mansion.
What we said: In making us giggle at the supernatural, Ghosts is very British. But it is American in the sense of having a gag-to-airtime ratio much higher than British sitcoms normally manage these days. Read the full review
I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson
This deliriously absurd sketch show from a former Saturday Night Live player was hailed immediately as one of the greatest Netflix shows to date.
What we said: I wolfed down the entire series in one sitting, genuinely incapacitated with laughter. And then I watched it all again. I’m at the stage where I’m cherrypicking sketches now, but I’ve seen my favourites six or seven times. I’m fully obsessed at this point. At its peak, I think I Think You Should Leave might be one of the funniest things I have ever seen. Read more
Leaving Neverland
A devastating four-hour exposé of alleged child sexual abuse by Michael Jackson. Wade Robson and James Safechuck chillingly and plausibly outlined their accounts of childhood grooming by the man that they, and the whole world, worshipped.
What we said: An astonishing piece of work. Relentlessly spare and unsensationalist, it manages better than any other in its genre not to let its attention wander from the survivors’ testimony. Footage of Jackson is confined almost wholly to that of him with the boys themselves on stage, private calls between them and family snaps. He is never allowed to overwhelm the story. Read the full review
Line of Duty
Complex … Martin Compston and Stephen Graham in Line of Duty. Photograph: BBC/World Productions
Jed Mercurio’s police corruption masterpiece returned for a fifth outing after a two-year wait, bringing with it a stunningly complex performance from Stephen Graham, more urgent exits required … and heartstopping, jaw-dropping action to the last.
What we said: As ever, nothing is wasted; not a scene, not a line, not a beat. It fits together flawlessly – you can imagine Mercurio sitting like a watchmaker at his table with the parts spread before him and fitting the loupe to his eye before assembling the whole thing and listening for its perfectly regulated tick. Read the full review
Mum
Stefan Golaszewski’s sitcom tour de force ended on a heartwarming high. Over three lovely series, Lesley Manville and Peter Mullan as Cathy and Michael gave us the gift of a quietly epic romance that will echo down the ages – and kept the tears in our eyes.
What we said: Mum might have looked like it was just a sitcom, but it had something beautiful to say about love and loss. It’s said it. Read the full review
Pose
Assembling the largest collection of trans actors in televisual history, Ryan Murphy’s big-hearted drama about the voguing scene in 1980s New York had style, grace, swagger and sass for days. What’s not to love?
What we said: Razzle-dazzle showmanship isn’t Pose’s only source of infectious joy. Watching the slow, still-unfolding process of these characters becoming more and more their true selves is as exhilarating as the opening bars of Cheryl Lynn’s Got to be Real. Self-actualisation isn’t easy, but it sure is beautiful. Read the full review
Pure
Frank and fearless ... Pure. Photograph: Sophia Spring/Channel 4
Following a young woman with a form of OCD called Pure O, which manifests as constant invasive thoughts about sex, this comedy-drama was among the year’s frankest and most fearless TV.
What we said: The drama and the gags are never sacrificed to worthy exposition, virtue-signalling or finger-wagging, but, at the same time, the series has so evidently been made in good faith that you can surrender to it entirely, never fearing that it will put a foot wrong. Read the full review
Russian Doll
A hipster Groundhog Day, but also so much more, Natasha Lyonne’s comedy about a thirtysomething trapped in a time loop of death and rebirth proved a truly mind-bending proposition.
What we said: Russian Doll is an acquired taste. But do persist: there is such a fine, idiosyncratic, impressive show nested within. Read the full review
Sex Education
Gillian Anderson starred as Jean, a sex therapist whose son Otis (Asa Butterfield) – though too anxious to masturbate himself – sets up a sex advice service at school. A punchy, horny comedy, with the added bonus of the fantastic Ncuti Gatwa as Otis’s best friend Eric. Worth watching for his heroic prom outfit alone.
What we said: Endlessly and seemingly effortlessly funny, in a naturalistic way that doesn’t have you listening for the hooves of the next gag thundering down a well-worn track but, like Catastrophe, catches you almost unawares and makes you bark with laughter. Read the full review
The Last Survivors
Sam Dresner, Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, Frank Bright and Susan Pollack ... The Last Survivors. Composite: BBC/Minnow Films Ltd
Arthur Cary’s thoughtful, wonderful and always dignified 90-minute documentary heard the stories of some of the last living people who survived concentration camps as children. A very important work indeed.
What we said: For an hour and a half, I was crying, especially when Cary followed three generations of Holocaust survivors to Auschwitz, knowing all the time that tears are not enough. Nor guilt. Read the full review
The Other Two
How would you react if you could barely get cast as Man Who Smells Fart in an advert while your kid brother became a Bieber-esque teen hearthrob overnight? That’s the premise of this brilliant satire, which skewers our pop-culture-obsessed society spectacularly.
What we said: It has heart, charm, steel, belly laughs and a gimlet eye. Get on it. Read the full review
The Victim
John Hannah and Kelly Macdonald starred in an intelligent drama about a vigilante attack on a potential child killer that managed to ask ever more challenging questions as its episodes rolled on.
What we said: It is a drama that resonates with its time by asking what constitutes a victim and how much leeway we allow in bestowing that status. Do they have to be perfect? How sure do we have to be? And what happens when the perpetrator becomes a victim too, of a different kind? Read the full review
The Virtues
Shane Meadows reunited with This is England star Stephen Graham for an unflinching drama about a troubled dad attempting to reunite with his long-lost sister and process childhood sexual abuse.
What we said: Unspoken pain infuses every scene, every gesture and expression from Stephen Graham and in doing so lays the foundations to do justice to the suffering of victims everywhere. Read the full review
The Yorkshire Ripper Files
Liza Williams’s three-part documentary revisited one of the biggest – and longest – murder manhunts in British history, taking us back to a time so different it seemed almost foreign.
What we said: At its best, Williams’ series – with its mixture of archive footage and new interviews – is a social document. The hindsight it offers is not primarily about the mishandling of the investigation, but of the grim tone of the times. Read the full review
This Time With Alan Partridge
Appalling company ... This Time With Alan Partridge. Photograph: Colin Hutton/BBC/Baby Cow
The excruciating monkey tennis-pitcher went back to the BBC for a One Show-style magazine programme. Inevitably – and hilariously for viewers – it wasn’t the smoothest of returns.
What we said: We get the heroes we deserve, and as you finish writhing in agony and lie limp from laughter, hatred, panic, despair or in awe at the end of another half-hour in his appalling company, you can only reflect that if Brexit means Alan then the whole business just got more complicated still. Read the full review
Veep
A last hurrah for Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s mendacious yet incompetent vice-president, in a political satire that was perfectly attuned for these most buffoonish of times.
What we said: Louis-Dreyfus has won a record six Emmy awards for her role as Selina Meyer, and, frankly, it’s no wonder. She is magnificent, brittle and furiously amoral. In this seventh and final season of Veep, it appears to be getting out while it still has a hope in hell of making its fictional world look more comedic than the real one. Read the full review
When They See Us
Almost unbearably harrowing ... When They See Us. Photograph: Atsushi Nishijima/Netflix
Ava DuVernay’s staggering miniseries about the Central Park Five showed how a group of young boys came to be falsely convicted for raping a young white woman in 1989. It is unbearably harrowing to watch the boys, as young as 13, get violently coerced by police into giving confessions.
What we said: The performances are uniformly astonishing – especially from the central five, Asante Blackk, Caleel Harris, Ethan Herisse, Marquis Rodriguez and Jharrel Jerome, most of whom are just a few years older than the teens they are playing. They capture the innocence, in all senses, of children, and the permanence of its loss. It feels like a great privilege to see them. Read the full review
Years and Years
Russell T Davies’s hugely ambitious drama followed a family through the next 15 years of British life, taking in the migrant crisis, terrifying technological innovations and Trump’s increasingly fraught face-off with China.
What we said: For a series that compresses 15 years into six hours, it seems to pass in the blink of an eye thanks to Russell T Davies’s trademark humour, compassion and the kinetic energy with which he infuses every project. We do not deserve Davies, but thank God he’s here. Read the full review
100 Vaginas
Following her projects about breasts and penises, artist Laura Dodsworth photographed a range of women’s vulvas, then showed the sitters their vaginal portraits and interviewed them for their responses. The result? Intimate, empowering television, unlike anything that has ever aired before.
What we said: A gently but relentlessly radical documentary. It’s not until you see a full set of female genitals filling your screen that you realise how little you see anything of or about them in wider culture. Read the full review

The 2019 MET Gala is officially underway, and we’re breaking down the most over-the-top fashion from tonight’s lavish affair, and you may wanna take a seat for this one.
What’s up guys, it’s your girl Drew Dorsey back here on Clevver News, and praise the fashion GODS because the most wonderful time of the year is upon us:
A time where us peasants sit back and judge celebrity fashion from behind a screen and wait eagerly for the memes to start rolling in…
Although nobody really knows what celebs actually do once inside the event, what we do know is that they did NOT come to play this year. The 2019 MET Gala theme was ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’, inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay ‘Notes on ‘Camp’, and no, I don’t mean the summer camp you had your first kiss at. To put it in fancy terms, QUOTE, “The essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.”
And we learned rather quickly tonight that ‘exaggeration’ was clearly the understatement of the century the moment Cardi B hit the carpet… literally wearing a carpet. They say it takes a village, but we’re assuming Cardi’s dress took an entire army to lift. She arrived in a deep red feathered gown and a Rihanna-inspired train circa 2015 MET Gala. She clearly did not take this theme lightly y’all.
But speaking of ‘light’, Katy Perry literally lit up the red carpet lookin’ like a chandelier straight out of Beauty and the Beast. Ok, so this Moschino ‘gown’, if you will, probably isn’t the most out-there look we’ve EVER seen, but one false move next to a set of sprinkles and homegirl is FRIED six ways from Sunday. But be our guest, KP.
You know when you see Jared Leto on camera, and you think, “SHEESH I seriously just can’t get enough of Jared Leto”? Well tonight, there was plenty of Jared Leto to go around as he brought a an extra head… like, his OWN head. I just… I have questions…
Like, is it heavy? Did you lose a bet? Did your makeup artist charge you extra? Where do you put it when you need to pee?
Annnnd in enters Ezra Miller, folks. No joke, if you put Jared and Ezra in a ‘Who Wore Themselves Better’, we’d have a tie breaker. Cue every and all ‘eye-catching’ puns because he literally had like 27 eyeballs attached to his face. He teamed up with Burberry Creative Director Riccardo Tisci for this gem of a statement ‘fit. He accessorized with a mask to hide his face, complete with a full cape and pinstripe suit with a jeweled corset.
Lupita Nyong’o took a page out of the Lisa Frank handbook tonight, as she embodied a literal walking rainbow, bold drag-inspired makeup and a statement-making afro with golden picks. No bad hair days, amiright?!
Cara Delevingne earns a spot on our ‘WTF’ list, and after attempting to try and figure out the correlation between a set of teeth, bananas, a fake hand and eyeballs disguised as candy, there’s just no explanation, because DUH – MET GALA.
Gigi Hadid channeled her inner-ice queen, donning a white, silver and gold Michael Kors catsuit with a matching headpiece and coat decked out in feathers. Oh, and did we mention that Michael Kors was her date for the evening? Well played!
As we near the end of our list, I can only imagine that you’re probably getting tired, and even a little hungry by now. Thanks to Katy Perry and this post-carpet snack, you’re probably about ready to dial up your Postmates driver as we speak. KP’s second course consisted of a full-on burger. Buns, condiments and ALL.
And that, my friends, is how you MET Gala. I’m officially wiped out, so I’m gonna turn it over to you guys – what did you think about this year’s fashion turnout, and which celeb’s outfits shocked you the most? Get to talking in the comments, and find me on my socials @drew__dorsey. After that, be sure to click right over here to check out even more MET Gala coverage, and don’t forget to subscribe and hit that bell so you never miss an update. Thanks for watching and stay weird, my friends.

⚡"Green Siren"⚡ So I saw a post with a girl who had this blue/spirulina green faux locs and it immediately reminded me of a mermaid, so I decided to paint one. I channeled my inner Lisa Frank, remembering the days of those florescent Trapper Keepers from my childhood and got it done😁...On to the next one #siren #digitalpainting #photoshop #xppen #blackgirlmagic #blackgirlsrock #fauxlocs #messybun #illustration #memphisartist #901 #blewisarts #digitalart #blackart #anime #instaart #locnation #naturalhair #jellyfish #mermaid #fantasyart
