Rewatched My Stand-In eps 2 and 3 tonight, and I'm definitely newly fascinated with Ming POV/Ming's internal concept of what was happening between him and Joe that entire time. I forgot just how much we got of Ming's home life and family in episode 2, and my brain is abuzz trying to connect all the dots. His relationship with May is so interesting. She clocks that he and Joe are together on Christmas, and is immediately careful to conceal it not just from their parents but from Tong. May and Ming have this "us against the world" vibe where they protect and cover for each other, going back to May giving herself pneumonia saving Ming from drowning. I absolutely believe there's more going on in their family than mom pressuring Ming to marry women any time he goes home - I actually suspect things about his family are being obscured for future painful reveals - but May is a safe space for him. Until Tong is added into the picture, and Ming has to flee the country for four years to get away from his big feelings. It's just kind of bonkers to me that he had this intense, safe and presumably very grounding relationship with his sister, but made his obsession with a random movie star the centerpiece of his world instead. Why did he imprint on Tong? Is it really just Joe's sexy back muscles that drew him in? Did he think if he could land a famous movie star his parents would accept him being with a man? Was it subconscious self-sabotage of his only safe relationship lol? I genuinely have no idea!! What I am stuck on though is when he told May he was working through something, and would tell her when he was ready, but he promised he'd get through it. On rewatch, it seems very obvious that what he's talking about is the torch he's carrying for Tong, so to me that's a reveal that he's deliberately trying to move on with Joe - not using him as a sex doll replacement, but throwing himself into something real. (What's messy obviously is that Ming started this for the proxyfucking, but I think overhearing Joe confess his love for Ming to Sol is when Ming started making a determined effort to choose Joe.) There's also his reaction to Joe's Christmas gift where the watch becomes a metaphor for Joe himself (vs. Tong): Ming doesn't need the "top" one, why can't he want the "normal" one?

The first time I was watching this, I assumed that Ming just has no internal awareness of how important Joe is to him, he just feels pure need and acts very very normal when his emotional support stand-in is ripped away. I assumed Ming believes he's in love with Tong and thinks he's just passing some time with Joe. It doesn't help that every time Joe presses him on anything emotional Ming shuts him down or outright negs him lolllll

But like for example, in the scene where they're shopping together and Joe gets excited about the couple mugs, first Ming snaps "What makes you think we're a couple?", then he tries to mitigate his slip by playing it off: "after living with me, you'll realize you don't want me as a boyfriend." His kneejerk impulse to shut Joe down and say cruel things is imo a defense mechanism, a really maladaptive one that helps convince Joe later on that there was never any love there, but I'm starting to think it's triggered in response to actually wanting the intimacy and primacy that Joe is pushing for, and being terrified of that.

It would make so much sense for somebody who is terrified of needing anybody else, of being vulnerable or feeling anything real, to decide they're in love with a complete asshole movie star who uses their family for money and them personally for favors, and shape their life around that. Especially now that I understand how young Ming was when he first fixated on Tong (17ish??), I just feel like that entire imprinting is your classic teenager-who-is-not-ready-to-be-in-a-real-relationship parasocial spiral. Thoughts about Striker being a "supremacist:"

On the surface, he's sort of a social class activist/ Robin Hood archetype. He thinks But when Blitz calls him a supremacist, who's he a supremacist against exactly? It's imps. This guy hates imps (and also identifies as one, even though he's clearly some sort of hybrid, which is interesting).

"Disgusting" comes up in reference to Blitz's relationship with Stolas, but the words "rich" and "pompous" follow immediately.

Notice how in the image below, his edge over Moxxie is all about size and physical strength- the things he implies throughout the episode make him the superior being. Look at that wide smile.

I thought about delving more into why Striker sees Blitz as closer to his own level, and I think it comes down to the things he values (physical strength, willingness to kill, detachment/independence), which are not the things that we the audience end up liking the most about Blitz. He misses the point of what actually makes our boy great, basically. 😍

Bridgerton - A Dissertation

Chemistry is subjective and that's why I love Bridgerton. If one couple isn't your bag, then there are others to choose from.

Personally, I've enjoyed all the seasons. I just love to see love unfold.

Season 1 was such a new animal. It was the novelty of it all. Nothing had been done like this before. You either had the adulterous, explicit, and/or violent sex scenes of Outlander or Game of Thrones or you had chaste Austen (which j'adore but still). There is no other show (even though there have been attempts) that combines the sweet romantic side of love with sexy times. And on top of that you have the costumes and the humor and the diversity.

Simon and Daphne's love story for me was so beautiful watching it simply because it was like they'd turned the historical romances I love reading so much into a tv show.

Season 2 I was so pumped for. The first 4 episodes were delicious. The looks, the stares, the verbal sparring, the passionate declarations, and almost kisses. Be still my heart. The wedding episode was a giant buzzkill. It ground all that momentum to a halt. Edwina deciding not to marry Anthony should've been a 5 minute scene max. That episode took up time when we could've seen them make progress on their relationship. After that, the plot did bounce back. Then, we got their love scene in the garden. I think the most apt description I've seen of that is that it was like a hot music video. It was fine and all, but I was wanting more. It wasn't rewatchable like the Simon and Daphne scenes.

Then Queen Charlotte came along and wowzers did I love that show on so many levels. It was gorgeously done, funny, sweet, heartbreaking, and sexy. George and Charlotte were a good couple but knowing their ending wasn't so happy definitely put an asterisk next to it.

Season 3 came along and at first I was a little indifferent about it for multiple reasons.

1) I hadn't been fully sold on Luke and Nicola's chemistry. It seemed too friend-like (which I know is the point but still). On top of that, there's their real life age gap. Luke N. is super attractive but I was envisioning someone older and more mature (because I know the books have Pen and Colin as older).

2) Friends to lovers isn't a favorite trope of mine.

3) I really wanted Eloise or Benedict's season to be next.

But oh my word, guys, I am really digging this season. Probably more so than even Queen Charlotte.

Things I Love:

Colin being the pursuer and driver of the relationship instead of Daphne in season 1 or Daphne/Edwina/circumstances in season 2. It's delicious to see Colin chasing Penelope. And yeah, she did ask him to kiss her but home skillet didn't ask him to show up at her house for a late night rendezvous. That was all him.

A less angry/bitter male lead. Colin likely has daddy issues too, but he is just more emotionally in-tune (when he allows himself to be) and doesn't take it out on others. He's sweet and lovable and a perfect cinnamon roll when he's not posing.

The Sexy times are back! That carriage scene was 10/10 - no notes. And it was sexy because of the feelings component. And we're getting more! I'm gonna pass out!

Even though I wish they'd hurry a bit and get them back to being friends, I do enjoy seeing the Eloise and Penelope friendship aftermath. I love seeing how much they care about each other despite being angry/hurt by one another.

That height difference, tho!

I feel like we can all take enjoyment from different couples and different seasons. We're all different and different tropes resonate with us. There is something to be enjoyed by all with Bridgerton.

i'm actually really quite invested now in the alternate universe sinclair & delenn relationship, because imagine her discovering AFTER the fact that her husband is Literally Valen. and she's her own distant ancestor somehow as well

delenn might actually roll with that but lennier's face in the background like O_O

i had a coworker who, anytime some new crazy shit happened, used to take a deep breath and say "this, too." not like 'this too shall pass' or anything, just acknowledging that This Too is a thing we're dealing with today, on top of all the other things. that's lennier ten times a season.

sheridan and delenn are theeee het couple of all time, i think we can all agree on this, i would NOT want to trade them for anything

but i keep thinking about how because sheridan missed season one, he never knew her as a minbari

it just seems so sad for her!!! and for me because i’d like to see him navigate that

i'm having a hard time this go-round watching her get isolated from her people :( :( i mean she IS a religious zealot just Doing Crazy Shit, they're not wrong about her, but the randos calling her a freak need to meet me in the parking lot

ALSO i just watched the dreaming episode, where it's strongly implied that she transformed herself specifically in order to be able to have children with a human (to fix the soul gap or whatever), and she's Destined For Sheridan and all, but she hadn't met him yet

and they weren't even an item when sinclair went into the past to start writing prophecies

soooo do you think she and sinclair were pen pals while he was on minbar and he read between the lines that she was super into this guy?? i think so.

lost Tommy scenes

I really really wish we could see all the scenes between tommy and the other characters that are alluded to but not shown. Like I Know it’s in service of first the reveal that buck/eddie/chim have beaten Hen to harbor, and then the reveal that buck is craving Tommy’s attention and tommy likes buck romantically. But dammit I think we miss so much of the foundation of Buck and Tommy (and Tommy and Eddie’s friendship) because they wanted to keep those reveals under their hats.

(side note, I agree with the buddies partially that bucks behavior doesn’t make sense if viewed purely from a “buck is jealous that eddie is getting Tommy’s attention” because why would he act like that particularly with the whole eddie being on the phone and him watching him like a Hawk because eddie could’ve been on the phone with anybody? however I don’t think it works purely from the other perspective either, because then why would buck want a tour of harbor station? And then why would he continue to hype up Eddie as a person tommy should be friends with? Honestly it reads more rejection dysphoric/that ole fear of exclusion, the same kind that made buck act out when eddie first showed up, at least to me)

ok where was I. So yeah I wish they hadn’t cut so much out in service of those two reveals because I really want the scenes where

Buck and Eddie actually meet Tommy. You can kinda tell Tommy is really feelin himself when Hen shows up, and I think that’s Tommy being a) happy to save the day and b) havin’ a little ‘just met a cute boy’ swagger. That is one peacocking pilot is what I’m saying. I also think that Eddie must have introduced himself first, using his first and last name, and then Buck, not wanting to just say Buck, introduced himself first and last name too. Otherwise I really have no idea where Tommy would’ve even learned bucks first name. Eddie said they clicked immediately so it’d be interesting to see what that meant and whether or not Buck already started on the jealousy train.

when stormy weather is playing as Tommy lands the helicopter, you can see Buck has moved to the front seat, with Eddie in the back with Bobby and the kid he rescued. I’d really love to have heard what kinda conversation went on between them, if any. Clearly time has passed because when eddie and Buck find Bobby and the kid it is fully dark and when Tommy lands the helicopter it is fully daytime. What I find interesting is once they land, Tommy and Eddie don’t interact with each other at all. The three of them just watch the bathena reuniting moment. Eddie leaves the frame without acknowledging Tommy, while Buck specifically pauses and reaches out for Tommy for their little musical beat (actually three beats, in terms of the music) I don’t know, it just seems like that scene makes way more of a case for a Buck and Tommy instant connection more than an Eddie and Tommy one. And I would’ve loved to see the in between scene to pepper in more details.

god do I want to see a Tommy and Chris scene SO BAD. Clearly chris regaled Tommy with tales of him and bucks adventures and I wish we knew what exactly Tommy knows and his reaction to it. I think that also would’ve given more insight.

I also want to see Buck and Chris’s scene talking about Tommy (gee can you tell I miss Christopher) is Chris really as interested or is Maddie right and Buck kept the conversation on that topic? Inquiring minds wish to know.

I want to see the scene with Tommy taking Eddie To get his leg fixed. When exactly did they have this heart to heart about excluding Buck and what did it entail? Tommy says that they both “felt bad” tbh I really wish we had seen this firsthand because eddie had seemed kind of preoccupied with his own stuff in those episodes (that asking Buck to babysit thing was OUT OF POCKET, even though I know he didn’t mean to be rude) and I would’ve loved to have seen him show that concern toward Buck. Tommy clearly gets the importance of Buck and Eddie’s friendship and I kinda want to see what moments led him to understand how important that relationship is, to the point he literally drives over to bucks place just to apologize for getting in the way.

anywho yeah I know we really haven’t got that much to go on as to Buck and Tommy’s relationship and I know a huge part of that is the 10 episode run as opposed to the normal 18. But yeah I want more bucktommy because there is so much good stuff there and I want them to really get the time to explore it.

It’s not that I don’t like buddie, I really do! They have a very strong foundation and case for them becoming a romantic pairing, like for reals these two are not normal about each other, and they haven’t been since the beginning. But I think Buck is having that initial bad behavior in the same way he did with his little boycrush on eddie. And the difference between Eddie and Tommy is that Tommy actually is open and ready to commit to him romantically. I don’t think it’s a matter of whether or not there’s feelings deeper than friendship with buddie, to me that’s an unequivocal yes, but I do think it’s a matter of whether or not eddie will get his shit together in time for Buck to still be there waiting for him. And I think the clock on that is ticking fast because Buck cannot stop smiling at that pilot man. And who can blame him?

for all my grievances with tangled the series, one thing i cannot criticize them for is their songs, i mean, sure, not all of them make sense in context (let me make you proud comes to mind), the songs are spectacular, from the vocals to the instrumental, all of them are a joy to listen to, whether they are just incredibly goofy, like the buddy song, to heartbreaking, like waiting in the wings, whether its a solo, a duet or a group, they are wonderful to listen to
