Omg why are so talented like you can literally draw anythingbdhdjs
your honor, please tell us about your journey through the world of art
Nony are you for real ahhaahhahahaah if i read this on my blog I'd think i sent it to myself or told my mom to do so 🤣🤣. Scroll a bit and see I can't even do a proper edit on my phone lmaoo.
If you're not trolling me then thank you a lot but really I'm far from being able to draw "literally anything" 😅 each day i spend on the internet i notice all the things i have yet to improve and should be exploring. Moreover seems like doing art gets harder for me with time somehow, it looked easier to switch between styles before but now it feels like a race. So I'd say I'm still barely halfway in my "art journey"...
If i were to resume how i've evolved to this point, I'd say i just have liked drawing since I've got memory...would make drawings out of all my fav cartoons and movies hahaha even my own notebook covers for school subjects...little doodles everywhere.
I was a math/science nerd too though so everyone thought i was going to become an architect or urban engineer and pushed me to go for that kind of career...my gramps was a known chemistry teacher at a very important national univ. and he died when i was like 10 so my whole family wanted me to study there..
Sadly i dropped that option in mid-preparation (even though my ranking was not bad in the exam essays) because the advisors at the career expos didn't sell it for me so I decided i didn't want to be smart anymore ahahsjskddk I love my gramps like a dad but i think he would still have been happy i decided to study graphic design instead.
I went to uni and spent like 6 yrs studying stuff i honestly have forgotten bc in the end gRaphiC dEsiGn wAsN'T mY PaSsiOn....well except for the first two years where i learned about structure and color and those basic artsy things.
By the time i was halfway of graduating (around 2012-13), my friend introduced me to tumblr, which was my first experience with blogging and attempting to do digital art (if you check my oldest posts they're either made with pencil or scanned and drawn over), also sharing stuff with random people which was so new but exciting in a way.
I got a wacom and that was the end for my traditional art skills for a while 🤣 until 2018 when i went to Toronto a couple of months to be part of a traditional animation portfolio workshop...and only then i realized that what i had learned at uni and practiced the former years had been useful, and actually understood what each excercise was for..
I've been trying to keep up with more digital techniques since then, but also trying to not leave traditional medium aside, all while juggling with work hahaha.
Sometimes i feel i don't give myself enough time to improve. I plan to become either a concept artist or storyboarder at some point and i need a proper portfolio, I feel a bit of pressure :P but oh well I'm trying to chill and focus on my jobs while i can
Remember no matter how good you think an artist is, we always will look up to someone and acknowledge we are forever learning how to art, sometimes without even knowing what we did to make a piece look good in the first place.
Thanks again for the ask! I hope to hear from you after this lol.

Secret | Part 1 | #ShawnMendesWritingCircle
Tumblr media
A/N: I’m so excited to get to be a part of this writing circle. Thank you @saysweartogod-og for coming up with this amazing idea. This fic is a little spin off of a secret billionaire trope, and I can honestly say I’m so excited to see where some of the amazing writers participating in this decide to take it. I hope you enjoy this first chapter, and feel free to send feedback or thoughts about the chapter and where you think it might go, because my guess is as good as yours, and I’d love to talk about it!
WC: 2.6K
~
From the moment you met Shawn six months ago, you knew that letting yourself get involved with him was a bad idea. It took you about three seconds to come up with a handful of reasons why you could never let yourself fall for him, but it only took him one night to make you forget them all.
You stepped into his condo, spotted him, and knew who he was immediately before the words, “Hey, I’m Shawn,” Even fell from his lips. You told yourself you’d never come back here before you spoke a single word to him. You also vowed to kill Brian and Alicia the second you got them alone.
Brian is dating your roommate, which is how you wound up here in the first place. Alicia knows you rarely ever go out because you’re either working or studying, so when she found out you weren’t working for the first time on a Friday night, she practically begged you to come with her. She said she was meeting some of Brian’s friends for the first time and didn’t want to be alone. Despite you telling her that she’d obviously have Brian there, she refused to give up, and finally, you reluctantly agreed to go. You had no idea that Brian’s “friend” was Shawn Mendes.
At first, your only focus was getting through the party and out of the condo without anyone posting a photo of you online, knowing that photo would be circulated within minutes if it had Shawn in it too, and that’s the last thing you’d want. You didn’t expect it to be too difficult to avoid being in a photo with Shawn considering the condo was not small by any means, and there’s no reason for him to take any type of notice of you.
Even though you regretted accepting the invitation, you still decided to make the most of the night. Since you rarely let yourself go out, you were determined to enjoy the one night you had. You’re still nursing your first drink, despite it already being warm. As time passes, you watch as everyone around you becomes more and more inebriated. Phones are out, as they often are at parties like these, and you’re tired of hiding in the darkest corner you could find, so you slip outside. You’re not outside for even five minutes before you hear the sliding door open, the music drifting out from inside.
“Y/n, right?” Shawn questions, stepping outside, and you try to hide the shock on your face over the fact that he remembered your name.
“Mhmm,” You respond intentionally looking away from him.
“What are you doing out here?” He asks, taking the spot beside you by the railing so the two of you are standing shoulder to shoulder, except his shoulder is about five inches above yours.
“I could ask you the same thing.” You respond, not wanting to give him the real answer to that question.
“They’re all taking a lot of pictures in there.” He says, as though that’s an answer to the question, but it’s not.
“It’s your party, why wouldn’t you want to be in the pictures?” You question, surprised. You know why you don’t want to be in them, but you can’t seem to fathom why he wouldn’t want to be in pictures with his friends at his own place.
“Don’t want people to know where I am,” He says with a shrug. “What about you, why’d you slip out just now?” He asks again since you avoided the question the first time.
“Needed some air,” You lie, keeping your eyes trained on the city lights.
He doesn’t press the topic anymore. You’re expecting him to wander away, back inside to the party, but he doesn’t. Shawn asks about how you know Brian and you explain that he’s dating your roommate. To be polite, you ask him the same question and he shares that they met when they were six and on the same soccer team. For some reason, conversation comes easy with him, and you almost let your guard down. Almost.
After a talking for a while, he asks, “Can I get your Instagram?”
Suddenly you remember the promise you made to yourself earlier. “I don’t have one.” You say before slipping past him and heading back inside in search of the bathroom. You don’t need to see his face to know he’s wearing a perplexed look. When people hear you don’t have an Instagram, they look at you like you’re from outer space. That’s how ridiculous they think it is, and then they think you’re lying because you’re not into them. Even though you’re not lying, you never really cared if that’s what they thought.
By the end of the night, you’re just glad to make it out of there. Alicia is drunk enough that you drive her car back to your apartment, and the whole time, she’s mumbling about how she thinks Shawn likes you and about how Brian told her that he thinks you two would be good together. You tell her she’s talking nonsense, and Shawn would never like you like that, but deep down, you knew you already liked Shawn more than you would want to admit.
Brian gave Shawn your number, and you texted for two months before moving beyond friendship, even though you both knew it was heading in that direction from the very beginning. It took that long for you to finally be convinced that he was a safe person to be with. Shawn knew from the very beginning, before you even got together, that you did not want to go public with the relationship. He knew that you were completely off of social media, so it made sense that you wanted to keep your life private, and he agreed that it would be for the best.
Even after you got together, he was rarely ever in Toronto. He was busy traveling for work, and you were busy with work and Uni, so it was mostly a long distance relationship with a lot of texting and facetiming, but you’ve managed to make it work and treasure the small amounts of time you have together.
Shawn’s finally back in town, and you spent most of the day lazily hanging out. When night hit, a bunch of Shawn’s friends came over, including Brian and Alicia. This party feels a lot different from the last one. In that one, you were keeping to yourself, mostly in the corner or outside. Tonight, you feel like you can let your guard down, at least a little bit. Shawn had made it clear that his friends couldn’t post any pictures with him in them because he was supposed to be in Miami and his management would basically kill him if it got out he slipped away to come home to Toronto. Shawn was determined to come home for the weekend. He missed you, so he made a promise to his management that no one would find out he was here.
It worked out better for you because you felt like you were safe from worrying about pictures posted online. What you didn’t realize was that his friends never promised not to post pictures at all, just that they wouldn’t post pictures of Shawn. You’re standing around the kitchen island, laughing about something Alicia is saying when you spot Brian looking down at his phone. Out of curiosity, your eyes fall on his screen to see you and Alicia. He clicks post before you have a chance to say anything. In a second, you’re standing in front of him. “Hey, what did you just post?” You ask him.
“Don’t worry, it’s a nice picture.” He says, shrugging.
“Brian, delete it.” You say. He’s already drunk, and you’re starting to wish you had more than one drink because of the anxiety raising up within you. “Please, you have to delete that. Delete it right now, please.” You swallow your anxiety and fear, trying to keep your emotions from getting the better of you. It’s only now that you realize that you were basically screaming, and all the other conversations going on stopped because everyone is focused on you.
“Chill,” Brian says, but when you make it clear that you’re serious, he finally concedes. “Fine.” He deletes it, showing you his phone as he does so.
“Thanks,” You mumble before pushing past everyone still standing around staring at you and disappearing into Shawn’s room, slamming the door behind you. You pace across the room a couple of times before you hear a knock on the door.
You don’t say anything or make a move to open it. You’re still trying to calm your breathing and remind yourself that nothing happened. The picture was only up for no more than a few minutes. Everything’s okay, and you’re just being paranoid, at least that’s what you tried to tell yourself.
The door opens, and you turn to see who it is. Shawn’s standing in the doorway, questions swimming in his eyes, but he doesn’t ask any of them right away. You sit down on the bed, taking a deep breath, readying yourself to face him. He steps inside, closing the door behind him. “You okay?” He asks.
You swallow hard to keep your emotions down, “Yeah, I’m fine. I’m sorry about that.” You nod toward the door, but you don’t offer an explanation.
Shawn takes a seat next to you, “That wasn’t just about us keeping our relationship a secret, was it?” He questions softly. He’s putting the pieces together. Shawn wasn’t even in the Instagram story, and even though you know Shawn’s fans keep track of his every move and watch all of his friend’s stuff, you’re not delusional enough to think that if you’re in one story everyone will know about you and Shawn. But as soon as you realized that Shawn’s friends get tens of thousands of views on their stories, it worried you. You’re worried that someone would see it, someone who you didn’t want to see it.
“I’m sorry I freaked out.” You respond. “But you should get back to your friends. I think I’m just going to go.” You say, starting to stand up.
Shawn reaches out for you, taking your hand in his. “Please don’t go.” He says. “I just want to know what’s going on with you. Whatever it is, you can tell me.” He seems concerned. Even though you’ve only known him for a couple of months, you already trust Shawn more than you’ve trusted anyone else. But with all of his friends here, along with knowing he’s already had a few drinks, you know now’s not the time to talk about this.
“I really think I should go. I’ll see you later, okay?” Shawn doesn’t try to stop you again. He’s already made it clear that he wants you to stay, but if you want to go, he’ll let you.
You get into your car and drive back to your apartment. When you arrive, you see that Shawn has texted you a few times. He asks you to text him when you get home safely. He also lets you know that if you want to talk about what happened, he’s there.
You text him back, letting him know you made it home, but you don’t say anything about the picture. After replying to Shawn, you turn off your phone and get ready for bed, trying to fall asleep before you worry yourself sick.
The next morning, when you wake up, you’re surprised that you don’t see a message from Shawn. He must still be sleeping, you think to yourself before getting out of bed. After brushing your teeth and putting your contacts in, you start walking toward the kitchen in search of breakfast. You stop short as soon as you step out of the hallway because you see Shawn sitting at your dining room table. He looks up from his phone when he sees you.
“Hey, Alicia let me in.” He explains before nodding toward the donuts, “I brought donuts.”
“Thanks,” You whisper, pulling out a seat and sitting down.
“Can we talk about last night?” He asks, hesitantly.
You knew that you would have to tell him sometime, but you were hoping you could avoid it for at least a little while longer.
“My dad’s really,” You pause, searching for the right word, finally saying, “Controlling.”
Shawn’s eyebrows knit together, and he watches you closely. He doesn’t know where this conversation is going, and you don’t blame him.
“Both of my parents wanted me to go into the family business, but I didn’t want to. They didn’t want to hear it or even consider letting me do anything else. When I turned eighteen, I left. I got a scholarship to a university they never knew I applied to. I deleted all my social media’s and I moved away.” You haven’t spoken those words aloud to anyone, ever, and you didn’t realize they would be so difficult to say.
“You ran away?” Shawn questions, his voice barely above a whisper, and you know that he’s just trying to wrap his mind around all of it. It’s a lot, so you don’t blame him.
“I’m not a teenaged runaway. I’m not a missing person.” You respond, knowing how it sounds. “I was eighteen. I told them I was moving away to go to University. I just didn’t tell them which one because I didn’t want them to just show up or think they could buy their way back into my life. I needed to do it on my own.”
He’s not quite understanding how you could just cut your family out of your life, and you know it’s a difficult concept. “Buy their way in?” He asks.
“Yeah, knowing my dad, he’d do something like buy a building on campus or something and then make a whole show of dedicating and opening it, or find some way to show up and manipulate their way back into my life, and I just didn’t want that.”
“So, what does your dad do?”
“You ever heard of Ardes Corp.” Shawn’s eyes widen. Everyone’s heard of Ardes Corp. “My real name is Y/n Ardes. I started using my middle name as my last name, so people wouldn’t know.”
“Okay, but why go through all these lengths to still not be found by them? You clearly did it all on your own, putting yourself through Uni and everything. Why would it matter if they saw a picture of you online?”
“You know how I said I told them I was leaving, so I didn’t just run away?”
“Yeah?”
“Well it wasn’t the best conversation. They kind of disowned me, and I kind of don’t want them to find me and confront me or tell me I’m living my life wrong or do whatever they might do if they change my mind and try to drag me back home.” That may not be the full story, but you think it’ll be at least enough to satisfy Shawn for the time being.
When he nods, and hands you a napkin, you take it gratefully.
“I guess that’s why you won’t even step outside with me, huh?” He questions, opening the box of donuts.
You bite your lip, meeting his eyes and nodding.
He nods back, a silent understanding passes between the two of you. Even though you just threw a lot of information about your past at him, he doesn’t seem to be put off by it, instead, he took it all in stride.
“Thanks for buying the donuts.” You say, as he motions for you to choose first.
“You’re welcome.” He says with a smile.
You choose the twist and Shawn takes one with chocolate on it, and the two of you eat in comfortable silence. You have no doubt that Shawn has more questions, and there’s a lot more that he deserves to know, but he’s only here for another day, and you’d much rather focus on this delicious donut and the idea of some quality time alone with your boyfriend instead of rehashing your past.

The Most Stressful Time of the Year.
A/N: Just a little something I thought up over these past few days that is pure fluff. (And my first hockey player one shot, yikes, so please be nice) Hope you enjoy 😊.
Word Count: 2.1k
“Aus, hey.”
Although your boyfriend was partially aware that he was being called, he was too focused on his phone to even bother giving whoever was talking to him any attention.
“Auston?”
His brows furrowed as he read through his text conversations with you. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. The two of you were talking about a possible date to the Toronto Christmas Market in the upcoming weeks before you wished him luck, and he had to put his phone away to get ready for the game in Philly.
It was a tough loss against the Flyers, and the entire team was in pretty low spirits because of it, but what threw Auston off, even more, was how when they were getting ready to leave the arena, and he finally looked at his phone again, there wasn’t a single notification from you.
He was almost positive it was nothing, but he’d grown accustomed to having at least one message from you as soon as he got off the ice. It was your thing. After every game, you would always say how proud you were and how much you loved him, regardless of the score. Auston appreciated it immensely, and although he had grown so used to such a small yet meaningful action, it still made the butterflies in his stomach flutter with affection. So, to not see a message from you after a game; made him worry a little bit.
You were in the midst of exam season at uni and up to your ears in homework, which was why you didn’t tag along for the trip to Philadelphia in the first place so that you could attend the game in Toronto the following night; maybe go to the Raptors game the night after. Before the game, you told Auston that you’d be up late finishing your assignments and would meet him at Pearson just like you usually did. What you didn’t tell him though, was just how exhausted you were with everything going on in life at the moment. Although he did ask you how you were doing on multiple occasions earlier in the day, you insisted that you were fine and made sure to not show how tired you were during a brief facetime call the two of you shared.
As soon as he dipped out of the dressing room, Auston called you. Again, it was something he always did after a game; but when he was instantly met with your voicemail… he was a bit confused. So, he sent you a text.
Auston
Heading to the airport now. Can’t wait to see you, x.
He couldn’t help but anxiously glance at his phone every time it buzzed with a new notification in hopes that it was you saying you’d gone to get a bite to eat or something. However, when the device dinged, and it wasn’t a message from you, his facial features would fall slightly, and he’d let out a sigh; gestures that didn’t go unnoticed by his teammates as they made their way through the airport terminal.
As everyone boarded the plane, Auston tried once more to call you, getting in the way of John and William as they tried to pass him in the narrow hallway. He didn’t realize at the time, but a few of the guys were watching as he began pacing and stressfully pushing his free hand through his hair once reluctantly hung up his phone after being met by your voicemail again. It was then they decided maybe someone should see what was going on.
Freddie was the one who decided to step up and ask what was up. But it still took him a few tries to actually gain his teammates’ attention.
“MATTHEWS!”
Jumping at the sudden outburst behind him, Auston was quick in whipping around to face Freddie. “Woah! What’s your deal?”
“My deal? What’s your deal? You’ve been acting weird since we left the arena. Everything alright?”
Auston sighed.
“You’re going to think it’s pathetic.”
“More pathetic than I already think you are?” Freddie quipped. “I’m kidding. Clearly, something is bothering you. What’s going on?”
With another sigh, Aus explained the situation. He said how he didn’t want to think much about it because maybe you were just busy with schoolwork, but there was also this weird feeling about it all that he couldn’t shake. What if something happened to you?
Freddie was able to see where he was coming from easily. He knew of yours and Auston’s cheesy antics, having seen it first hand since the two of you started dating, and to be completely honest, even he found it a little strange that no one could get ahold of you… especially Auston.
“That is a little weird, not going to lie.”
“I know,” your boyfriend huffed as a flight attendant came by to say they’d be departing soon and for them to please take their seats. “I’m probably overthinking it, but, ugh, I don’t even know…”
“It’s part of your routine, man,” Freddie reasoned. “You’re worried cause you’re not used to suddenly not hear from her, any of us would be if it were our girlfriend. But, we’ll be back in Toronto in a couple of hours. I’m sure she’s fine and will be there waiting to pick you up.”
“You’re right, thanks, man,” Auston replied with a smile before getting into his seat and trying to relax for the flight home.
As soon as the plane landed and he was able to turn his phone off airplane mode, Auston stared at his phone, hopefully, thinking it would light up with just one simple message from, but still nothing. His face fell immediately, growing even more anxious as he gathered his things and exited the plane.
You ended up not being at the gate waiting for him, and that made him feel even worse. Panicked even. So, he tried calling you again to make sure you were ok.
All he cared about at that point was knowing that you were safe. He couldn’t have cared less about you not picking him up or texting him after the game; right then, all he wanted to know was that nothing had happened to you, and all would be fine. But yet, he still couldn’t get an answer.
“Hey, she’s probably at home asleep or at the library studying or something,” Mitch spoke up from behind him. “I just got off the phone with Steph, she was talking to her earlier tonight. Said she was exhausted but had a lot to work to do, I’m sure she’s fine, Aus.”
I’m sure she’s fine. No matter how many times he was told that it was becoming harder for Auston to believe. However, there wasn’t much he could do while stuck at Pearson and you somewhere downtown.
“Yeah, um, I think I’ll just stop by her apartment… Don’t think she’d be at the library this late. Think I could catch a ride with you and Mo?”
“Of course, let's go.”
The three men made their way into the city as quickly as they could with the odd late-night traffic. Your apartment was a one-bedroom in the Church-Wellesley Village. It resided above a coffee shop, and even with its small size, you never complained, despite it being in a rougher part of Toronto’s downtown core when comparing it to where Auston’s fancy condo was. You found it after your first year of university as you were moving out of student residence and had stayed there since. However, after dating Auston for as long as you have, you pretty much lived with him and had plans to not renew your lease in the spring so that you could properly move in together.
But your apartment was near your school, so it made sense that you crammed yourself up there rather than at Auston’s with how early some of your exams could be, and how much you hated waking up for them. Also, that’s where you said you were when you and he talked earlier in the day.
You liked your apartment, to put it simply, and although you’d never admit it… you much preferred being at Auston’s when he was there as opposed to alone because it didn’t quite feel like home just yet.
When Morgan pulled up outside of your building, Auston was quick in grabbing his stuff and bolting. He muttered a quick thanks and goodbye to his teammates, saying he’d keep them updated, before digging the key you gave him out of his pocket so he could use it to let himself in. He made his way up the dingy staircase to the second floor and walked down to the hall to your door, taking a deep breath before opening it and hopefully seeing you on the other side.
But your apartment was dark and empty.
Auston could see indications that you were there at some point when he switched the light on, but after a quick look through the space, he determined you were definitely not there. But where could you be? It was too late for the library to be open, he was sure someone would’ve known if you’d gone to a friend from school to study… but no one knew anything. It was as if you had vanished.
He raked his mind for ideas of where you could be, and the only other place he could think of was his condo. Again, although you never admitted it, Auston knew you didn’t love being at his condo alone. He was determined to make it feel like home for you and things were definitely progressing in that direction, but you still hadn’t moved in fully and he was pretty sure you wouldn’t want to be there on your own until that happened. But he figured there was nowhere else you could possibly be, so that’s where he headed.
It was a short Uber ride from your apartment down to where his condo was, but for Auston, it seemed like ages. He didn’t make very much conversation with the driver, just the basic hellos and how are yous, all while his knee bounced anxiously and, he wished he could just get there faster.
As soon as he arrived, he was rushing through the building's front doors and to the elevators. It took dreadfully long for him to finally get to his floor before the doors opened again and, he hurried down the hallway to his unit. He was quick unlocking the door and pushing it open, before letting out an audible sigh when he was able to see inside.
You were completely passed out. Curled up on the large sectional in the living room, surrounded by various notes and textbooks with your laptop still open on the glass coffee table. The blinds on the windows were still open, showcasing the nights CN tower light show in the distance, while Sportsnet's late-night reruns of NHL highlights played on the flat-screen TV.
Auston couldn’t help but chuckle at himself over how worried he’d gotten, but also at his relieved he was just to know you were safe.
With a slight shake of his head, he dropped his things by the door, took his shoes off, and made his way over to you. He gently scooped you up off the couch bridal style, smiling as you unconsciously nuzzled into his chest, and carried you to the bedroom. He tried so hard to not wake you, but struggled in opening the door while making sure to not drop you in the process; ultimately resulting in you being jolted awake.
“Aus?” You muttered sleepily while knuckling at your eyes. “W-when did you get home? What time is it?”
“Almost 3am,” he replied with a soft smile.
“What!? I- oh my god, I thought I set an alarm to wake me up if I fell asleep. I didn’t even see the whole game.”
“Trust me, you didn’t miss much. Was worried about you though, couldn’t get ahold of you regardless of how hard I tried.”
“Oh,” you said quietly as he laid you down on the bed and tucked you in before beginning to strip down to his boxers. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to- oh shit, I was supposed to pick you up I-.”
“You have nothing to apologize for,” he chuckled as he switched off the light and crawled into the bed beside you. The loud yawn you let out as he pulled you into his chest didn’t go unnoticed by him, and he couldn't help his smile as you instinctively cuddle up against him. “I’m just glad you’re safe. Are you ready for your exam tomorrow?”
“I think so.”
“Good. Let’s get some rest then, yeah?”
“Deal,” you answered while letting your body gradually relax as you began falling sleep again. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” he replied and placed a soft peck to your forehead before holding onto you just a little bit tighter than usual, and eventually let himself drift off into a peaceful sleep as well.

Here for You
“you’re my emergency contact and I’ve been in an accident so you drop everything to come to the hospital”
taken from this post break-up au list!
————————————————————
Word count: 2k -ish
“Come here, lovebug” You cooed as you picked up your niece and settled her on your lap. You offered her a rattle, which she gladly accepted and giggled excitingly when it made a sound.
“She’s getting so big” You told your older sister; staring at the baby on your lap in awe “I just want her to stay this tiny forever, sis”
“You and me, both” Anne laughs “I’m really glad you came by, babe. It’s been a while since you came to visit us”
“I know and I’m sorry” You frowned as you held your niece closer to you “Uni is just being a pain in my ass right now, you know? Who ever said it was a good idea to continue doing my masters when I struggled enough for my degree?”
“It’s what you get for having the brains” She grinned in reply “Have you spoken to mom and dad recently?”
“No,” You groaned “I’ve been meaning to call them but everything is just swamping over me right now. I’m the worst daughter in the world”
“Can’t deny that” Anne chuckles and when she noticed the glare you gave her, she raised her hands defensively “I’m just saying; it wouldn’t hurt you to call home once a week, sis. They really miss you”
“You’re right” You said defeatedly “I’ll call them tomorrow and probably get a flight out to Toronto to spend some time with them during my reading week. It’s been a while since I’ve been home anyways”
You hear your phone ring from where you left it on the dining table.
“I should get that” You said as you handed your niece over to your sister before getting up on your feet. You strolled over to the table and picked up your phone; contemplating to answer it now when an unknown caller flashes across the screen.
Anne notices the hesitation in your action and asks, “Who is it?”
You hold up a finger to her as you accepted the call and brought your phone to your ear “Hello?”
“Hi! Am I speaking to y/n y/ln?”
“Yeah,” You answered curiously “Who is this?”
“My name is Lyn and I’m calling from the Kindred Hospital Los Angeles” She replied on the other end and you felt your stomach drop when you heard the word hospital. Any call from hospitals wasn’t a good sign and even though you didn’t even know why she was calling, you didn’t have a good feeling about it “If it is possible, I need you to come down as soon as you can, ma’am”
“What is going on?” You asked nervously “Why do I need to go there? Who got hurt?”
“Ma’am, your boyfriend was in an accident not too long ago” She responded, which completely threw you off-guard “In our system; the victim, Connor Brashier, has listed you as his emergency contact”
“Wh-What?” You stuttered out as your heart starts beating faster and you swore it was going to pound out of your chest. Anne sees the way you’re thrown off and she grew worried just by looking at you “Do you know what happened? Is he okay?”
“I don’t have much details to give over the phone but when you get here, the doctors will let you know his condition”
“Right, okay. Thank you, Lyn” You nodded before bidding goodbye to her and hanging up.
“Who was that?” Anne asked worriedly “Is everything okay?”
“That was the hospital…” You let out a shaky breath “Connor was in an accident”
“Connor?” Anne asked softly, with a frown appearing on her face “Your ex-boyfriend, Connor? Why are they calling you instead of a family member?”
“He listed me as an emergency contact from when we were dating” You explained. You were still shocked with the news you just heard and even though you haven’t spoken to Connor in over a year, you were worried for the state he was in “I have to go see him” You announced as you picked up your handbag.
“Sis,” Anne called out to you but you didn’t reply. Your head wasn’t in the right place and all you could think of was getting to that hospital to be by Connor’s side.
Anne sighed as she stood up and with her daughter in her arms, she walked over to the crib placed at the corner of the living room and set her baby down.
You were in the midst of wearing your coat when Anne puts a hand over you to stop your actions further “Honey, call his brother” She insisted “You don’t have to go down there. You two aren’t together anymore, remember? He’s not your responsibility anymore”
“Anne, you know I can’t do that” You frowned “I just- I can’t, okay? I need to know that he’s okay”
“It’s going to hurt you to see him again, sis” Anne was trying to pursue you into staying “Please, just listen to me for once. Call Dylan, let his family know and let Dylan update you on his condition instead, please?”
“I know he’s not your favourite person in the world after everything that happened but you can’t stop me, Anne” You argued back “He was in an accident and they called me. The only right thing to do is to be there for him”
“Why?” Anne asked “Why are you so willing to face him again?”
“Because if the roles were reversed, I know he would’ve done the same”

“Hey”
You looked up to see Dylan and his parents standing by the door of the waiting room. Dylan and his dad were both looking pale while his mother’s eyes were bloodshot red and puffy.
You wiped a tear away from your eyes and stood up to greet them “Hi,” You said softly and locked gaze with Connor’s mom “Mrs. Brashier I-,”
She shakes her head and steps forward as she wraps her arms around you “Thank you for being here” She muttered against your shoulder. Her voice was soft and fragile, like you’d expect it to be for a mother who just found out her son was in an accident.
“There’s no reason for you to be here but you’re still here” She continued “So, thank you honey”
You pulled away from her moments later and gave her a soft smile “Please don’t thank me” You insisted “He’s my friend and I want to make sure that he’s alright”
“Doctor Wells is waiting to explain everything to you whenever you are ready” You then said “They wouldn’t go into details with me because I’m not his family member”
“We’ll go speak to him now” Connor’s dad nodded then offered you a small smile “Thank you again, y/n”
Once the parents left, you gave your attention to Dylan. You knew he was trying to stay strong in front of his parents but deep down, he was going to break.
“Come here” You said to him as you opened your arms.
Dylan falls into your arms and you rubbed his back softly as you felt cold tears against your neck “Dyl, he’s going to be okay” You assured “Connor is a tough guy, remember?”
“I don’t want to lose him, y/n” Dylan sniffled softly “I can’t lose my brother”
“And you’re not going to” You said more firmly, although it was hard for anyone to find it believable with your voice starting to crack “It’s just a little bump, Dylan. He’s going to wake up and he is going to be just fine. I promise you”

That was 5 days ago.
After the surgery, the doctors informed that Connor was in a coma due to the many injuries on his body; a broken arm, several broken ribs and his forehead needed several stitches from all the shattered glass pieces.
You know how traumatized his family were. They refused to leave his hospital room. They refused to leave his side. And through those 5 days, you refused to leave their side too. They needed all the moral support they could get and you made sure to give them just that.
You weren’t any better either. Seeing how broken up Connor was; lying on his hospital bed unconsciously, it made your heart broke. All the anger you’ve built up towards him for the longest time were all forgotten in a blink of an eye.
You were afraid. Afraid of the chances that he might never wake up, despite the doctors still being positive about his condition. You were afraid that the last memory you would have of him was him screaming at you I never want to see you again.
You pushed the door open slowly at about 15 minutes past 6pm. You would’ve gotten there sooner but you only managed to sleep at 9am after a whole night of tossing and turning in bed, thinking about one thing and one thing only; Connor.
Dylan laid on the couch and that was the first time you saw him with his eyes closed in the past few days. Connor’s mom was sitting on the chair next to his bed while she grasps his hand tightly.
You set the bag of food down and walked over to her, tapping her shoulder “Mrs. Brashier?”
She’s startled for a second and when she realizes it was you, she smiled softly “Hi honey”
“Do you want to eat?” You ask “I made some soup for everyone”
“Oh dear, thank you so much but you didn’t have to trouble yourself” She protested “Soup actually sounds nice right now”
“I’ll go heat it up for you in the kitchen” You insisted but she shakes her head “No, no. I should probably do some walking after being cramped in this room for days”
You offered the paper bag to her and she muttered a soft ‘thank you’, before she asked “Will you let me know if the doctors come in?”
You nodded without hesitation “I’ll call you instantly”
Once Connor’s mom left the room, you took her spot beside his bed. Your breath hitched in your throat as you looked closely at the scars on face and his bandaged arm. The more you look at his scars, the angrier you felt at the asshole who did this to him.
You looked down at his arm and you hesitated for a second before reaching out for it and taking his hand into yours. You were reminded of the sparks you felt when you first held hands on your first date.
“Hi Con, I don’t know if you can hear me right now” You spoke up and you could feel the tears forming in your eyes “But I need you to gather all the strength that you have and wake up. Your family, they are so worried for you, Con” You said before adding in a softer tone “I am so worried about you. I don’t care if you still hate me or whatever but I just want you to wake up… I need to know that you’re okay, Connor. Please”
“If you let me, I’ll take good care of you” You continued, your voice was starting to become strained “I’ll be here for you until you’re properly healed”
You let out a shaky breath as you rest your forehead against your intertwined hands. This was the first time you were finally letting it all out ever since you found out about Connor’s accident.
Then you felt it.
The sudden stroke against your thumb, which made you shoot up quickly.
“Connor?” You sniffled as you wiped your tears away and leaned forward “Connor?”
His head started to move stiffly as you let out another breath. You reached for the bell to alert the nurses then called out to Dylan.
“Get your mom from the pantry!” You told Dylan, who just woke up from his slumber “Connor’s stirring right now!”
As Connor opens his eyes, your heart begins racing. He was definitely going to be so confused to see you here.
Connor takes one look at you and you see the confusion written all over his face “y/n?” He asked “What the hell happened?” He let out a painful groan when he tried to move his arm.
“Don’t move your arm” You instructed as you helped him put a pillow underneath it so he was more comfortable “And it’s a long story, Connor… But the important thing is that you’re okay now”

William Nylander soulmate!au
The whole concept of a soulmate!au (for anyone who hasn’t seen this type of imagine before) is that everyone has a soulmate, someone destined to be with them (a perfect match) and this shows in some way (matching tattoo, colorblindness disappears etc whatever you want)
This is my first time writing an imagine so pls don’t hate on me too much I am very fragile. however you’re welcome to leave constructive criticism. Also I should probably mention that english isn’t my first language.

Every human being is born with a flower tattoo on their wrist, they all differ from each others. However, they’re all in black and white. No one knows how it gets there, it just is there when you enter the world. The flower is supposedly your soulmates favorite flower, which to you is crazy since you don’t even have one. They say that when you meet your soulmate, if you do, the flower becomes of color. Most people never meet their soulmates, some even say they don’t exist, that its all a lie. People still find love though, you can love someone who isn't ‘the perfect match’. Your parents are a perfect example, they met in their mid 20′s and are still happily in love, with different black and white flowers on their wrists.
When you were little you always dreamed of meeting your one true love, and you were always scared you never would. The colorless lily that stained your wrist was the most beautiful thing you’d ever seen and you’d often pick up markers of different colors and color inside the lines as well as you could. At the same time, you were constantly in fear of one of your parents meeting theirs, only to split the family apart. Apparently, when you meet the one nothing else matters, no one else matters. They say it’s like your world is whole, yet you never knew you were missing a piece.
At the age of twenty though, you’d pretty much given up. It wasn’t that most people who meet their soulmate does it early in life, its just that most people never do. So by this time you’d accepted the fact that its probably not going to happen, and you were fine. Actually, you were more than fine since you’d just moved to Toronto to go to uni. It was finally time to enter a new chapter in your life and my god were you ready. You’d spent most of the summer working and texting with your roommate to be, trying to get to know her before touching down in Toronto. By this time in mid October, she was a part of your everyday life and you’d gotten pretty close.
“Y/N I've got some great news for you!” your roommate Emily stormed into your shared dorm as you were getting ready for bed. She had a big grin on her face and held onto two pieces of paper, looking like tickets.
“Would you mind telling me the great news or are you just gonna stand there staring?” you asked her when you realized she wanted an answer. You paused your new-found favorite series and closed your computer to look at her.
“We’re going to a hockey game tomorrow!” she excitedly answered. “I know you don’t really care for hockey but I need companionship and its about time you get into some real Canadian traditions.” she continued, showing you the tickets. It was a maple leafs vs capitals game. you’d never really watched hockey, ever. in your small hometown in Connecticut no one really cared for it, and neither did you. but a game couldn’t hurt so why not?
“sure, you’re just gonna have to explain every thing that happens all the time. so you’re probably gonna hate me by the time we get home” you told her while putting your computer away. your friend skipped away to her bed while you laid down to get some sleep, though you couldn’t help but notice the lily on your wrist was itching. you ignored it as best as you could and it eventually stopped, letting you fall asleep.
William woke up early to prepare for the home game. A big breakfast and then off. He got into his car and exited the driveway as his phone rung.
“Willyyyyy” the voice of Kasperi sounded through the speakers of his car once he’d answered.
“Hey Kappy, whats up?” William spoke with a smile on his face. He couldn’t put his finger on why, but for some reason this particular morning was a very good morning. There was something lying in the air, excitement. It was probably just because of the game though, Willy thought.
“Im just excited about tonight, Annika’s coming to watch as well. Its always nice having her there, just gives you that extra edge you know?” Kappy answered. William suddenly caught himself scratching at his wrist, something he’d subconsciously been doing all morning. The black and white rose that clad his wrist was acting up for some reason, it was probably just an upcoming rash or something.
William stopped at a red light and pulled down his sleeve. He continued to itch before taking a good look at the flower, admiring it. William had always hoped that he’d one day meet his soulmate, the one destined to be with him. His mom always used to tease him about the flower, saying that he had ‘one classy girl waiting for him’. He knew she was right, he just hoped she wouldn’t have to wait all her life before he found her.
Y/N sat at the sold out Air Canada Centre with Emily as she waited for the players to get out on the ice. She had to admit it was all very impressive. The sea of blue and white along with chants and cheer really set the mood. She felt joyful. an older couple sat in front of you, and you couldn’t help but notice the colorful tattoos on their wrists. The woman had a yellow daisy while the man had a pink tulip. lucky bastards, you thought.
“I’m actually really happy you brought me here, for some reason I have the best feeling” you told your friend.
“You should be happy, these tickets were hard to get.” Emily told you with a proud smile. You were sitting quite close to the ice, but not directly by it. It honestly made you feel a little a little anxious, since it was pretty much the optimal spot if you want to get hit by a puck. But you pushed the thought to the back of your mind and continued chatting to your friend while waiting.
As the players came out for warmups you had the strangest feeling. It felt good, a weird kinda good. But also your wrist was itching like crazy.
“Are you okay? you’ve been scratching at your wrist all day, are you trying to scrape off the tattoo or something?” Emily asked you, eyeing you carefully. The woman who sat in front of you, the one with the yellow daisy, had overheard the conversation. She sneaked back at you and smiled, looking straight into your eyes knowingly. You gave her a confused look but she just turned back and took her soulmates hand in hers.
“Yeah.. yeah I’m good. Its just itching” you answered once you decided to ignore the strange act of the woman. You tried to focus on the players but the itching really got the best of you, yet you didn’t really mind. You had some strange feeling inside your gut, but it was nice.
William skated around the ice, trying his best to ignore the itching on his wrist which had only gotten worse over the course of the day. It was at warmups that it had really gone over the edge, the weird part was he didn’t mind. He couldn’t really explain why, but the great morning had turned into a great day and now, a great night.
As the puck dropped though he had to remind himself to keep his act together and focus. He failed miserably though, and the caps scored early on. It wasn’t entirely his fault though, but he was off his game a bit. As the second period came around he managed to steal the puck from Carlson and swiftly moved towards the now open net. A quick slapshot put the puck in the net and next thing he knew the crowds were yelling out in celebration as the game was tied. William skated towards the side of the rink and jumped up against one of the boards, happiness filling his body. But everything stopped as he caught the eye of one specific girl in the crowd. She was possibly the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. It was like time froze. Nobody moved. Nothing happened. The goal didn’t matter, nothing did. He just stared into her eyes as she stared back, mouth agape. Nobody else mattered but the two of them.
Auston had made his way towards the goalscorer and jumped him, much like Willy usually jumped Auston. William didn’t break eye contact with the girl though. It wasn’t until Auston grabbed his head and turned it towards him that Willy managed to snap back to reality.
“Dude are you okay? Like I know you scored but you look like the world stopped moving” Auston questioned with a big smile on his face. William laughed a bit as he made his way towards the bench to get his round of fist bumps. he then got up on the bench to take a seat, but not before turning around once again towards the crowd to look at the girl. He smiled and sat down, only now realizing that the itching had stopped. The nice feeling was still there though, spread throughout his body. He took his glove off to look at his wrist, only to see a beautiful red rose where the oh so gray flower had previously been.
I have no idea what this was and to be honest I’ve been drinking but here you go :))))))) if anyone would like a part 2 lemme know

Someone Like You (Smut)

Faint vibrations rang in my ears, doing their best to pull me out of my otherwise deep sleep. I tried ignoring the phone’s small throbs the best I could, but the more the slight noises continued, the more I woke from my drowsy state.
“Fuck sake, Mendes” I muttered, my hand searching for the phone lying somewhere next to me in the dark.
I didn’t even have to look at the screen to find out who it was, I always knew it was him whenever my phone was going off in the middle of the night. I had already turned the sound of, simply due to the massive amount of drunk texts and snapchats of a naked Brian I had gotten from him, before the clock had even stroke eleven.
Shawn had a night out with the guys for the first time in months and I knew, that meant getting rather pissed as fast as they possibly could. It was always how they ended up to be completely honest. And I didn’t mind it really, but if the kid would just let me fucking sleep that would have been great.
But somehow, he always ended up on my radar whenever either of us had been drinking and we were slowly losing our common sense. We were drawn to each other like magnets sometimes and we had no control over it at all.
It just happened; it always just happened.
My eyes felt sore and I had to rub them roughly, before being able to fully open them and stare into the dark room. I pressed the green button, slowly holding the phone to my ear.
“Mmhh” I groaned, pushing myself up in the large bed.
“Baby, my bab-baby” Shawn spoke, stuttering over his words.
I’d missed hearing him use those words towards me. It always stung a little in my heart whenever he called someone else something like that instead of me. Those words still felt like mine whenever they came out of his mouth. Somewhere, deep inside, they still felt like my words.
“What Shawn?” I muttered, resting my forehead in my palm.
“Di-did I wake you up?” he giggled in the other end.
“Not at all, I’m usually awake at three in the morning on a Thursday”
“Oh yeah…. Right”
“What is it, Shawn?”
“C-can you come p-pick me up?” he stuttered in a slur, taking in a deep breath.
The way he stumbled over his own words was actually kind of cute and if I hadn’t been this tired, it would probably have made me giggle a little.
I had tried convincing myself I hated him for calling me late at night when he was drunk and in need of something that felt real to him, but I knew I loved being his drunken pleasure. And I knew he loved being mine. Despite the hurt; we loved it too much to leave it untouched.
“What about the guys?” I asked, letting my sore feet touch the cold floor.
I grabbed the grey hoodie on floor and threw it over my naked body, dragging myself into the hallway and slipping into some of Shawn’s black Nike slippers lying around in the hall, that he probably forgot last time he was here and had to leave in a rush.
“They don’t wanna leave”
Thank god, at least that meant I didn’t have to drive them all home. Last time, I had to make five stops to get everyone home safely. Things always tended to get a bit out of hand, when the old crew from school was together at last.
“And I just wanna cuddle with you” he mumbled, his voice suddenly sounding rather sleepy.
His words took me by surprise and slowly but surely, they melted my heart and forced the heat to cross my cheeks. I bit roughly into my bottom lip as I struggled to breath normally.
“I’m on my way, text me address okay?”
“Okay b-baby girl, you’re the best”
“Mhh, Shawn” I muttered sleepy, closing the front door behind me.
“Me very lucky” Shawn agreed, giggling over his own drunken words. I rolled my eyes at him, finding the car keys and unlocking the car.
“Okay, getting in the car now. Drink some water and don’t get into too much trouble, eh?”
“I promise, see you soon” he said, before hanging up the phone. I climbed into the car, turned it on and started driving towards Toronto.
Luckily, it was still too early in the morning for traffic to really get started, so I get there quicker than I had really hoped and shortly after, I was pulling up to the club Shawn and the guys had been hanging out at.
My eyes caught a – rather drunk – Shawn with his arms swung around Matt’s shoulders. Shaking my head lightly, I rolled down the window.
“Matt, over here!” I called, catching his attention from across the road. Matt opened the door and helped Shawn slip into the car, struggling quite a bit with his weight.
“He’s all yours” Matt grinned, winking his eyes at me.
Though Shawn thought he fooled everyone around him, Matt had always known about us. He had caught on to our complicated relationship right at the beginning and he had been a shoulder for me to cry on whenever Shawn fooled around with some blonde model in Europe. We hurt each other; that’s the only thing we were good at. And sometimes, loving someone just isn’t enough.
“Lucky me” I rolled my eyes. “Thanks for taking care of him”
“Always, have a safe drive” Matt waved, shutting the door before walking back towards the club again.
“Mhh, hee-hey babe” Shawn giggled, turning his flushed cheeks towards me.
They always turned rosy whenever he had been drinking but it suited him with some colour in his cheeks for once.
I sent him a short smile, shaking my head lightly at him with a small laughter escaping my lips. Shawn had always been such a lightweight, even me compared to me - who is like half his size – I had always been able to throw down more shots than him.
“Get your seatbelt on” I said, my eyes gazing over at him.
“Good idea” he said, biting into his tongue while trying to find the lock beside the seat. His long fingers fumbled around for a few seconds without any luck, but I lost my patience rather quickly and leaned towards him.
“Here, let me” I said, reaching across his lap and putting on his seatbelt.
I tapped his chest, stroking his burning cheek softly for a second. Shawn shut his eyes and enjoyed my little sign of affection on his skin.
“Thank you”
“No worries, you okay there?” I asked, starting the car again.
“Yes, thanks for picking me up though. Sorry to wake you and everything” Shawn said, gazing over at me.
His eyes were expanded and dark, his glance blurry and it was a struggle for him to focus on my eyes. His faces slowly became paler than before and I’m sure his head would start spinning in the matter of minutes.
Shawn’s hand slipped across his seat and shortly after, his warm palm was resting on my right thigh. I kept my eyes on the road, but I sent him a short smile, licking my dry lips as I turned left and onto the empty road.
Though all I could think about was his warm hand on my thigh, I pushed the nagging feeling in my gut away and changed the subject to distract myself.
“Well, what are you waiting for? Give me the gossip then” Shawn quickly burst into laughter, throwing his head back in the seat and shutting his eyes tightly.
Whenever I picked him up from a night out, he always started talking about whatever went down and how I should have been there with them but truth was, I couldn’t stand watching him pick up other girls, so I’d rather stay home than have my heart broken over and over again.
“I swear, you missed out on so much” Shawn started, before he told me everything that had happened during the night’s drunken hours.
He told me about Ian’s failed attempt at picking up this girl who was really there for Shawn, Matt’s usual tricks and games and of course it wouldn’t have been a great night, if Brian hadn’t taken off his clothes and started singing One Direction with all the air he had left in his lungs.
I loved watching Shawn like this; when Shawn was drunk, he acted his age. There was no massive pressure leaning on his shoulders, no responsibilities that needed to be taken care of, no worries about how he presented himself or thinking about every little thing that came out of his mouth.
He got to be a normal nineteen-year-old, hanging out with his friends and making memorable nights, he would keep in his heart forever. Those kinds of memories I made at Uni every Friday night, those night Shawn rarely got to have.
Maybe that’s why I gave in whenever he called me drunk in the morning every now and then, because I knew, he rarely had the time for these nights. Maybe because I knew he somehow always ended up in my bed and I was too weak to fight it.
And being completely honest, I wanted this for him. I wanted some sort of normality in his life and the guys; they were as down to earth and grounded as anyone could be. They were good for Shawn, they kept him grounded too. They made him remember where he came from and they never let him forget it either.
They make Shawn who he is. And as much as I wanted to be that for him, I couldn’t keep up with his lifestyle, I couldn’t adapt to his world but I was glad the boys could because Shawn really did need somebody like them.
Shawn stumbled over his own words for a solid good twenty more minute and managed to drift into a heavy sleep just minutes before I pulled the car into my driveway. I somehow got him on his feet, his arms wrapped around my shoulder, half dragging him into bed. He was heavy as fuck and he almost crushed me entirely when putting all his weight on my shoulders.
Shawn sprawled into the bedroom and I pushed him down on the bed, gently pushing his shoes off his big feet. I tried pushing off his shirt too, but I had to give in and let him fall on his back fully dressed, smelling of alcohol and smoke. I crawled into bed next to him as his arm swung around me and pulled me closer to his chest.
“Cuddle me” he muttered, already half into sleep.
“Shawn, I don’t think-”
“Please just cuddle me. I’ve missed you”
“Okay” I gave in.
“Nuzzle my hair. Just like you used to?” he asked, pushing his head further against my body.
He pushed his head up on my chest, burying his face in my hoodie while his curls tickled the bare skin around my collarbone. I felt his lips peek sweetly along my collarbone as he exhaled heavily.
“Okay” I whispered, bending down and kissing his burning forehead.
The nagging feeling reached the surface in my stomach and by now, I had learned how to push it away as quickly as it appeared. My fingers disappeared into his sweaty, thick hair and moved around in circles massaging his scalp firmly.
His eyelashes flickered as I continued to move my fingers around in his soft hair and every time I hit the right spot, Shawn bit hardly into his bottom lip leaving marks from his teeth behind. Once in a while he would open his eyes and his blurry gaze would catch mine for a second or two and then his drowsy eyes would sink in again.
“Do I ever cross your mind? When I’m not here” he asked me seriously. “Shawn, this is the alcohol talking. I-“
“I mean… doesn’t it ever make you feel numb?”
“What does?”
“The pain inside? I feel so lost without you” his slurred words cut through the otherwise silent room and left me speechless.
I felt the tears pressing on but by biting hardly into my bottom lip I stopped them from falling down. I had cried too many tears over Shawn, he had cried too many over me. The lump in my throat grew as his eyes suddenly caught my gaze.
They were blank and I knew he was fighting the tears as well; though Shawn had always been the better at hiding his feelings, he had never really mastered hiding his pain from me. I saw it clearly every time he laid his eyes on me.
“It’s okay” I whispered gently back. “You’re okay” I bended down and kissed his soft lips shortly.
I tried pulling back my head again but Shawn pushed his fingers into my hair and locked my lips on his. I couldn’t fight him; I gave in without even thinking about it. His tongue spread my lips apart and made it into my mouth as the strong taste of alcohol spread in mine. Shawn’s fingers dug harder into my hair as he pushed my lips desperately closer to his.
“I’ve forgot how it feels like to kiss you” he whispered, his voice cracking over and dying at the end.
“I can’t forget what it feels like. Not even when I’m trying” I muttered back, my lips still brushing against his soft once. Shawn pressed his forehead against mine as a husky noise escaped his mouth and he let out a silent sulk.
“I never wanted this to happen, I never-“
“I know, baby. I know”
“All I ever wanted was you. I just wanted to be good for you” he stuttered, the tears now running down his sore cheeks.
I felt his lips tremble against mine as his little but almost silent sobs, punched all the air out of my aching lungs and left me suffocating behind.
“Sometimes… We’re just not good for the people we love. Sometimes the best we can do is let them go” I whispered comforting to him, but I knew my words would never heal the hole in his heart.
I let my nose tip run across his jawline as I wrapped both my arms around his broad body. Suddenly, he felt fragile to me; like he might actually break at some point.
“I don’t want to forget you. I don’t want to forget what your kiss feels like or what your hair smells like or how your hands are always warm. And I don’t…. I don’t want you to forget me” he whispered in tears.
I pushed up his chin, forcing his dark eyes to meet mine. My thumb ran across his quivering lips as my fingers caressed the back of his neck softly.
“I won’t ever forget you, Shawn”
“You promise?”
“I do. Your heart never forgets something you love”
“Do you?”
“Do I what?”
“Still love me?”
“I’ll always love you” I said, shutting my eyes. Shawn pushed himself up to close the gap between our lips once again.
“One more time?” he whispered in my ear as his lips moved to the sore spot on my neck.
I didn’t have the words to speak, so all I did was nod and give in to feeling his lips brush against my jaw bone gently.
Shawn dragged his mouth across my jaw and started slowly moving down my neck, occasionally using his teeth to nip at the spots he knew made me crumble underneath him. Shawn flipped me around in the bed as he felt my breath hitch, latching his mouth onto the special spot on my collarbone and giving it a particularly hard suck before biting into my skin.
I felt his thick boner dig into my skin as the heat flushed to my cheeks and made it rather harder for me to breathe. I writhed beneath him, my nails digging into his back to relieve some of the sexual frustration his wet tongue was given me.
Easily, Shawn’s hands pushed the hoodie over my head and reviled my naked body underneath. For a short second, his eyes ran down my body and he took in the sight he’d been missing for months. His slow hands ran down my body and caressed every crack and curve he met on his way, his tongue following right behind, leaving a wet trace on my naked body.
I let out a gasp and put my hands in his hair, tangling my fingers in his curly locks. I felt his hand trail down my stomach, to the hem of my panties as his long fingers wrapped around it and slowly ripped them down my thighs.
Shawn’s movements forced me to let out a soft moan as he easily threw the black panties onto the floor.  I reached for him, ripped his shirt open and tugged it over his head, forcing him to let out a low moan as my fingers brushed against the growing bulge in his pants.
My lips immediately went down to his bare skin, kissing along his chest and sucking roughly on his sore spots. Shawn threw his head back in pleasure as my hands move down his chest and slipped slowly into his pants.
My fingers found his thick dick as I moved my tongue further down his stomach, pass the scar and made it to the edge of his zipper. I undid his pants and pushed them down his legs, Shawn arching his back as my nails ran down his thick thighs.
Shawn’s mouth found my chest and when he made it to my hard nipples, he gave me a rough suck. With one hand squeezing my right breast, his wet mouth took care of the other one. I arched my back as a desperate moan escaped my trembling lips, when his teeth closed around my nipple without any warning.
I knotted my fingers in his hair again, dragging Shawn’s head closer to my lips and felt his heavy breaths against my face. He hummed into my lips as he closed the tiny gap between us, sending a shock through my whole body and left my skin lingering behind.
Shawn let out a husky squeak when he used his power to haul me closer to him, our hips pressed tightly together as I whimpered into his ear. I wrapped my legs around Shawn’s hips and his nails dug roughly into my thighs as his mouth bit into my tender skin, using his tongue to taste me properly again.
“You can’t tell me you don’t miss this” he breathed against me as the smell of alcohol from his mouth hit my face.
“It’s not the sex I miss the most”
“I’m not talking about the sex, I’m talking about being this close to each other” he gasped before sinking his teeth into my bottom lip, forcing me to throw my head back.
My fingers were digging into his moving back as I felt Shawn’s entire weight on top of me. Roughly, Shawn pushed my thighs apart with his nails digging into my hips afterwards and slowly letting himself slide slowly into my core as I let out a loud scream.
He let out a loud whimper as he yanked into me and filled me out entirely, his big hands caged around my hips helping me to move with him as he slipped in even deeper than before.
“You still feel the same” he whispered before he kissed me harshly, taking my last breath away.
I moaned into his mouth as his thrusts became faster, more eager, harder. I moaned again when Shawn’s hand slipped from his firm grip on the back of my neck, down to my ass to give it a rough squeeze. I couldn’t help but notice the smirk that shortly slipped across his lingering lips and then disappearing into lust again a second after.
Shawn had always been an ass guy.
With my mouth on Shawn’s damp neck, I let my mouth kiss him with a bruising intensity before biting roughly into his plumb bottom lip with my teeth. I never forgot the taste of him. Even after this long, it was still familiar to me.
Both my hand moved softly to his heavily flushed cheeks as I caught his gaze and looked into his deep – still blurry – eyes. His heavy panting and slight breathings was in sync with mine and with every rough thrust, Shawn pushed his thick length deeper and deeper into my core as he stared down at me with his eyes full of a mix between lust and pain.
Our heavy breathings and strained whines echoed in the dark room and every time Shawn hummed sweetly into my ear, I felt the heat rushing around in my veins.
Hardly, Shawn pressed my body further down the mattress, making my sweaty back stick to the white covers underneath me. Shawn’s mouth was working wonders on my breasts and I could already feel my toes curl as the pleasure hit me in waves every time his wet tongue moved just right around my nipples in his warm mouth.
Completely out of breath, Shawn slowed down his movement inside me, his mouth gasping desperately for air while his fingers slipped through his messy hair. He bended down to my face, kissed me sweetly and then he started thrusting in and out of me again, as he gradually picked up the pace.
He moved a hand down to my clit as he continued to thrust deeper into me without taking his burning eyes off mine.
I watched him as he moved above me; his mouth gaping wide open, his shoulders following his hard but deep yanks, the sweat dripping from his curls and down his temples. I reached out to touch his hair gently, moving a few curls sticking on his damp forehead as he sent me a little but very warm smile.
Shawn’s thumb rubbed my clit harder to add even more pleasure to my high and his moves forced me to shut my eyes tightly, as the high was pulling me in further.
Shawn pressed his face against my sticky neck and shortly after, I felt his tears wipe off on my skin. My hand moved from his lower back to behind his neck as my fingertips played with the edges of his curls. Pressing him as close to me as I possibly could, I kissed the top of his hair lovingly.
“I didn’t mean to break your heart” he spoke, his lips moving gently against my skin.
“It’s okay, Shawn. I broke yours too”
“But I continued hurting you. I did it over and over again and I-“
“Shh, babe. Even after everything, I don’t regret loving you” I whimpered as he – desperate to feel closer to me - smashed himself deeper into me.
“You hear me, Shawn? I won’t ever regret that” I promised him, throwing my head back in the pillow as he picked up the pace again.
He moved his mouth to my lips as my mouth fell gaping open, slipping his warm tongue in between my lips and deepening the kiss to feel as intimate as he possibly could. As I looked up at him, I noticed the beads of sweat forming on his skin and his thick curls falling into his eyes and sticking to his steamy forehead.
Shawn let out a small groan, his hand pushing through my hair and holding on to the back of my skull to support my head as he pushed himself into my care harder than before. My fingers trailed down the edge of his jawline to his neck and moving slowly down his neck until I reached the spot I had left marks on him.
Shawn enjoyed the breathless whimpers escaping my trembling mouth as my stomach clenched together almost reaching my limit. Shawn nibbled to my breast lightly, my fingernails sinking into his strong bicep hard enough to leave crescent shaped scars on his tender skin.
Shawn lifted up my legs to get maximum access to my welcoming body as he prepared himself for one last thrust; pulling out of me entirely, he caught my eyes before he quickly but roughly smashed himself deep into my core and exploded inside of me as he screamed out loudly. I threw my head back in pleasure, shutting my eyes and rode my high for as long as I possibly could as I felt Shawn roll off my stomach and collapse in the bed beside me seconds after.
I rolled to my sides as he tried somehow regain back some strength, because it hurt too much to look at him right now. I heard how his heavy panting slowed down and he slowly caught his breath again.
My hair was sticking to my sweaty neck and my lungs were screaming for air, but my body had no energy left. I shut my eyes feeling the tears forcing their way out and seconds after running down my cheeks silently.
Biting into my bottom lip, I tried hiding the sobs pressing on my lips but I was failing massively at it. Hiding my face in the pillow, I felt Shawn’s arms reach out of my naked body. Without fighting him, he moved closer to me as his arms wrapped around my naked body and his lips nipped my bare shoulder.
“Please don’t cry” he whispered softly in my ear, his thumb finding my cheeks and wiping away wet spots that shortly after, was replaced with new teardrops slipping down.
Shawn pressed his face against my messy hair and I felt his eyelashes flicker against my cheek, as his lips softly brushed back and forth my skin. The hurt flushed over my body and suddenly, I struggled to breathe properly.
I moved my head closer to his chest, hearing those hard pounds against his chest that used to be my favourite place in the world.
I didn’t get why we put ourselves through this. We both knew how it would end, we knew how much it would hurt, how empty we would feel afterwards. I guess, we were both hanging on to all the words we used to say, all the things we used to feel. And somehow, it was too hard for us to give up on it.
I wondered why we kept going around in circles in a state between watching each other and wanting to move pass each other.
“I could really use someone like you in my life” Shawn spoke, breaking the silence between us. My fingers slipped back and forth his arm, caressing his veins softly.
“Maybe if things were different”
“Yeah, maybe” he breathed back.
And I knew he would be gone in the morning and I would still feel empty inside.

I'm getting mad, I don't know why
16/07/2019 -; it’s been nice to think I haven’t needed to post on here for a while, but at the moment I feel like it’s right to. I’m 22 years old now, so how is life? It’s ok I guess. I’m doing alright for myself, renting an apartment with my boyfriend in a job I don’t really like and in a town I hate.
2019 has been quite a tough year on me. My health anxiety or hypochondria has been pretty much off the charts this year. This is due to unwelcome effects of heart palpitations, which started back in February. I think I used to get very minor/barely noticeable palpitations before, but in Feb it kicked in as the worst I’ve ever had. It was a strong unforgettable feeling, the panic it induced made me think I was going to die.
I went to A&E and they pretty much declared it was anxiety, I had an ECG and was sent home. I went to doctor as they said they could prescribe me some beta blockers, so I took them . They did nothing. I then got put on sertraline (antidepressant) and the side effects were horrible, so I said no thanks to that. In fact, I said no thanks to medication in general. Palpitations still trigger my anxiety but I’d rather that than horrible side effects from antidepressants, which I don’t even feel like I really need.
I then went to A&E again in May after suffering chest tightness, I think I had about 3 ECGs , a blood test and my blood pressure was monitored consistently, the doctor reassured me he was 99% sure it was anxiety. This helped me feel at ease, we were speaking for a while about common interests and this was really the only doctor I could ever truly open up to. He was a great lad and understood my anxiety.
Being in A&E this time on a Saturday night really made me think . Everyone was high on hard drugs, alcohol, trying to fight the doctors / nurses, spitting/puking on the floor and yeah. I felt like I was in that fucking hospital from Outlast.
Ever since then , I get them pretty much daily. I try not to take much notice. I’ve been trying to go to the gym to improve on my physical and mental health, however finding the time to do so is tricky when you’re working long hours. I feel like it has something to do with my posture that induces these palpitations, I can lead forward or to the right to stop it from happening, If I do nothing, it would probably go on for a while.
My next plan is to take magnesium pidolate to help. I have heard good things about this nutrient and its benefits when it comes to palpitations. I really think this could work for me. So that’s how my life has been this year, a lot of health anxiety. What about other issues?
I feel like I am very stressed but I couldn’t say so myself? I tend to brush it off but when I truly think of it, there’s anxiety and stress always when I’m going to and from work. The buses are a big part, as they’re so unreliable and sketchy. Walking through the town centre where I was only robbed last year on the street in pure daylight, still gives me fear walking through on my own.
Working itself is stressful of course, having to always keep a good rapport, making sure your shit is organised , making sure you attend 9+ hours a day and on time. Dealing with asshole clients. Dealing with incompetence, it happens so much. I get home and I stress myself out as I always want to do something creative or socialise with people, but I just have no motivation, I always see it as “I have no time to go out my comfort zone now, I just wanna relax” (socialising is usually out my comfort zone cause social anxiety and all that.) My mind then gets so conflicted and irritated that I want to try something new and creative and make friends, but just can’t find the time to do so. I’m always so exhausted.
Money hasn’t been too much of an issue, so at least I’m blessed on that behalf, but even so I’m still deep in my overdraft that I gotta find a way of paying. A decent £1,500 worth. I paid off my immediate student loan earlier this year and it took much weight off my shoulders.
Dissociation seems to be something I keep thinking of lately, things just don’t seem right. I can’t quite describe it. I don’t even know if it is dissociation? Time is just flying by so fast, I don’t seem to enjoy things as much as I used to , and I don’t really get excited for things anymore. I read online apparently this is just being an adult, but I don’t know. I would love to regain my excitement for life and whatnot.
Being stuck in the past has been a major issue itself in the past couple years , mainly due to loneliness or absence of friends I think. Albeit , it hasn’t been so bad since I’ve been active on various communities online, but without the internet, I have nothing in terms of friends. Most of my friends live in my hometown, which I don’t live in anymore. This triggers me to constantly look back in the past, mainly 2012/13/14 years and enjoy the memories I had, the friends I made, the experiences I embarked on and the fun I had. Sometimes I feel like I won’t ever get moments like that again. I guess that’s part of the “dissociation”
Despite all these issues, I’ve never thought about suicide, harming myself or others. I love life, I love people, I try to love myself . I want to truly cherish life but it’s just seem to lost its magic.
Issues that were dominant in my life around 2013-2016 thankfully are no longer around. Including emetophobia which was a big trigger, jealousy/envy was also a bitch to get over. My social anxiety was generally much worse back then too , so at least I don’t see much of those.
Alcohol consumption is another issue, I hate the stuff but at the same time, I fucking love it! If I don’t have booze over the weekend, it will feel like a wasted weekend, yeah it’s that bad. I usually just drink at my apartment with my bf as we don’t have friends local. I feel like it’s damaging my brain, I feel like it’s made me think slow, more forgetful and causes general health issues I wouldn’t expect. Sadly it’s too much to ask for to ask me to come off the stuff. Other drugs? I don’t do drugs. Not my thing really.
I blame my first attempt at uni for most of my desensitization. Shit happened and I was so kind and fragile back then, and it fucked me up. So now, those arseholes are the reasons why I am a not give a fuck kinda person when it comes to meeting ppl now.
SO WHATS GOOD? OR WHAT WILL BE GOOD OR WHAT MAY HELP? WHAT IS KEEPING ME GOING?
Well, I’m leaving my job on 30th August. Yup, I’m packing it in. I am also moving out of this town, I will then be on holiday in Toronto for 1 week, and then starting university down in Cheltenham, where I hope to make friends, have more free time back, not live in a shitty town, focus more on my academic skills, follow my dreams of getting into game design and really trying to climb the ladder. I want to go because I want to prove myself. I want to be able to sleep properly again. I want to feel how I did in college, where my happiness peaked. Work life is so dull and boring, and when you do it for so long, your life flies past you. I hope going to university will slow this down as I will have more free time, which I’ll be doing the things I want to do.
I’m so confident I can do well at uni this time around. I feel it’s exactly what I need. The holiday in Toronto is also exactly what I need . It’s the only thing I’m very excited for. A nice holiday, I haven’t had one in over two years. I’ve mostly been working non stop.
I want to see how this magnesium works out with my palpitations and hopefully if it works, I won’t have to worry and fear them when they happen. I’m crossing my fingers here!
I want to see how university plays out and if I can cut down on my drinking as the year progresses . I don’t think it does too great for your body or your mind.
I want to go to the gym more at uni, to help me stay in a healthy mindset and feel good .
I want to make friends and join communities to help support each other, have fun, make memories and not have to dwell on my past all the time just for comfort.
I don’t want to keep working at the moment. I’m not ready for it. That office makes me feel old. The stress I feel is probably killing me. This town is depressing. My morale is low. I don’t feel safe or confident here. I await my departure in September to hopefully feel much better.
Happy trails ! Kurt :D

Interviews with Entrepreneurs - Aneil Manhas
Tell me a bit about yourself, and your professional background.
So, I started my career in finance. I went to undergraduate business school at Richard Ivy, which is based out of Western [Uni]. Then, I basically started my career in finance. I started with Credit Suisse, working in Los Angeles with the investment banking division. From that point, I moved into private equity for a company in Toronto called Onyx. I was there for five years. After that, I made the entrepreneurial jump into what I do now, which is own and manage, to a varying degree, a number of different businesses.
What kind of services and products do you offer?
“So they’re diversified in the sense that they are four companies/projects that I am working on. One is GVA Brands, which is a manufacturer and distributors of powersport products in Canada. We have about 120 dealers across the country. That business is mostly focused on selling kids powersports products. By that, I mean kids ATVs, kids scooters, kids bikes, generators - generally just outdoor powersports and industrial products that you would see at a campsite or in the backyard, the farm. That business is Canadian only - we don’t sell anything to the US or anywhere abroad, and it’s solely dealer based in the sense that we don’t sell anything directly to the consumer.
So do you sell based on individual stores or one retailer?
Right, so it’s all done based on individual stores. At one point, we were dealing with some bix-box retailers, mostly CostCo and Walmart. But that business can be tough. The big challenge with dealing with those big box retailers when working with a product like mine is that - it is low margin to begin with - a lot of the sales through those stores are done through sales, such as big promo done during a long weekend or discount. And those kinds of sales would be where 80% of the volume moves. And what often happens is that you’ll go somewhat dry for a month then run a promo for a weekend. And then you’ll do more during that weekend than you did in in 6 weeks. (Overall, it doesn’t pan out.) You’re selling at a discount, and the margins are very slim. But the bigger issue is that a lot of these big box retailers, CostCo in particular, have very lenient return policies. However, from a vendor’s perspective, specifically when you’re selling somewhat of a seasonal product like an ATV or a generator, unfortunately what was happening was that we’d sell a bunch of them through the summer months but then in September or October, a lot of the products were coming back. So just from a financial perspective, given the low margin [of profit] and the returns, that business model just didn’t work for us.
That’s cool. I guess now, it’s more individual relations with each store or distributor as opposed to signing on the big client like Walmart
Exactly. So now, it’s just a 100 or so single dealer/single operation sports store. That’s the bulk of that business.
The next business would be Rosso Motors, which is an online seller of kids toys. It actually started as part of GVA. Just given that GVA was restricted to our dealer network, one thing I was trying to do was add an online component to the business as a growth engine. My firm belief is that, in this day and age, doesn’t matter what you’re selling - powersports products, soap, makeup, whatever - the online sales platform is where all the money and growth is. A lot of the traditional bix box or brick and mortar stores are facing a lot of challenges because they’re having to compete against all of the online focused retailers. And for me, to add that online component to GVA was important. Secondly, I wanted to develop a product that I could sell and distribute to the US, given that the population and market there is almost ten times our size.
It’s almost like you’re creating a middleman yourself by dealing with these dealers and stores, so now you can go straight from manufacturers to consumer.
Correct, that is definitely an appeal. What often happens is that how these online retailers can grow and scale so quickly is by offering prices that are so appealing, in the sense that a lot of the margin that is taken by the dealer or distributor in physical distribution business models are shared to the customer. What happens is that the customer is now getting access to products at a significantly cheaper price that if they walked into a local store. Secondly, you are able to scale at a pace that has never been done before. Before the online sales really took off, if you wanted to go and build a company that was $100M in revenue, the process was that you started a store, and the success from that one location is invested into the second. That would grow organically, increasing revenue and customer bases in a slow, steady growth. You’d start a company somewhere like in Vancouver and target the local community, and then grow adjacent slowly in your own area. However, with the internet, you can target a much larger market and now you’re looking at like 350 million people who are now your new potential customer base. This has allowed businesses to scale at a degree that was unprecedented. I’m a firm believer that the future of commerce is really in that online platform.
That’s pretty much how Rosso started. We started with one product - our main GVA product which was a kid’s pocket bike - that we could ship to the US. Since most of the GVA products are gas powered, there are a lot of regulations around the EPA which precludes us from selling to the States. Secondly, the products were larger - often ATVs and dirtbikes - which made shipping just not feasible from a pricing perspective. This pocket bike was electric, so we began shipping down, selling on the Amazon marketplace. Now, we have around 7 or 8 products. Online, we have our own website where we operate from, but the majority of sales continue to come from Amazon. We’ve expanded outside of the kids electric toys, now having a Rosso water division, sports mats. Still kids focused and toy like, but we’re not sticking to purely electric.
The third company is a company of Surface 604, which is a manufacturer and distributor of electric bikes. Unlike GVA [which is strictly dealer based] or Rosso [which operates only through online channels], this is a hybrid company. We have about 120 dealers spread across Canada and the US, but we also have an online presence where we can also sell our products. Right now, the majority of sales continue to occur through our physical sales but the online component is continuously growing.
The final company I deal with is a startup, pre-revenue stage. It’s gonna be a subscription based electric toothbrush business. I don’t know if you’ve heard of the Dollar Shave Club or Harry’s, and what they’ve done in the razor space. My initial intrigue there was the subscription based business model. It led me to think about what kind of products I could apply that same business model to. That’s what I was passionate about. It is an untapped market - and a huge one too. If you look at razors, you’re targeting every male. But with toothbrushes, we’re looking at every single person potentially.
The common theme with all of these businesses is the fact that I manufacture these products in China. I have a full time team that manages the businesses and processes in China, from the quality control to logistics. When I have new ideas, I have these proper channels in find and select the logical factory to partner with. These existing channels make a huge impact in the feasibility of our products.
What was your mission when you set out on this path? What were you trying to achieve?
That’s a good question. There wasn’t a specific goal in mind when I got started, but what sparked the switch to going down the typical finance, work-for-a-company route to doing something completely on my own was that to me, everyone has different things that excite and motivate them. For me, that was building and developing a whole business. I look at big organizations like Nike or Coca Cola or Dollar Shave Club, and all of them started with an idea. And to think that they went from an initial idea to being billion dollar corporations that are global, that journey is fascinating to me. As both an entrepreneur and a business, that journey and process is what keeps me excited.
So in other words, to see and build off your own ideas?
Yeah! I’m at a very early stage with this toothbrush company - I’m going from an idea to a product. I’m barely moving down the field from where I want it to go. But even then, just seeing that first step keeps you hungry to keep going and see ideas through.
What are your company’s values? What were you thinking of when you started these endeavours?
I wouldn’t say that I was thinking of this when i started these four businesses, but if you ask me now, what do I think is the key component here? Well, if you look at some of the companies today that have been able to achieve a tremendous amount of success in a short period of time, to me, the common trait between all of them is that they all solve real world problems. What does that mean? Let’s look at Dollar Shave Club, for example. Every guy can relate to how miserable the whole process of buying razors is. In Canada, [you can just pick up the razors from the shelves] - the [Gillette] Mach-3 refillables or whatever. It’s easy! But in the US, they are actually locked up. So you have to go and find somebody in the store that has the keys to unlock this, and they’re so expensive. What, 8 heads for $40? Every time I buy these razors, that’s the first concern that comes up. Everyone can relate to that, and this is the problem that Dollar Shave Club is trying to solve. To me, a lot of the good ideas, they solve real world problems exactly like that. Uber is another example. Who wouldn’t want to replace a taxi with a ride or car sharing service that charges you a fraction of the price? You’re solving a real world problem there. There’s a lot of appeal to that. I think a lot of the best ideas are born out of such problem solving, and for me now, that is the main focus when it comes to evaluating a new project or new business. Obviously, there are the typical business school aspects that you look at, right? The value proposition, the price, what the competition looks like - all the standard stuff you learn in business school. To me, the first thing I ask myself is what problem am I solving here? And if I can identify a real world problem that I am trying to solve and I can make someone’s life easier, that’s kind of the first step. Then I proceed to doing the other forms of due diligence.
What are your goals for your company? What would you like to see your business achieve and influence in the future whether it be through outreach, partnership, expansion?
Obviously, for any entrepreneur, you are always trying to grow your business. I would say that given that the businesses that I have are in very different stages of their life cycles, my goals definitely differ for each business. Take GVA for example - the powersports business. As I mentioned, that business is now more stagnant in terms of a lot of the dealers that we’re doing business with. There’s not a lot of growth in terms of adding more dealers or adding new products. So, how do you keep that revenue base growing and moving forward? I mean, the toothbrush business is pre-revenue, so my goal there is to just get that up there and running! That’s the first step. So I would say that depending on where the businesses are depending in their life cycles, the goals differ, but they all are based around growth.
What do you strive for when you start a business?
That’s a good question. I think what I’m trying to achieve is what I’ve already discussed a bit in terms of solving a problem. To me, if I take the toothbrush business, for an example, a high end Philips Sonicare toothbrush costs around $250 or something - north of $200! Whether you’re buying Oral B or Sonicare, they dominate that industry. That’s a lot of money. So for me, with my business model, the goal of that project is to be able to offer the consumer a product that may not be at the high end Philips level but still a high-end electric toothbrush model at a fraction of that price. I’m still figuring out pricing - it’ll be under a hundred bucks.
So in a sense, making that level of quality product more accessible? That’s the important part, right?
Yeah! Exactly. It’s kind of what we’ve talked about in the past, real world issues. It’s about trying to take that problem and making one that is more accessible. For the vast majority of people, $250 is not what they’ve budgeted for their toothbrushes. But for me - as I’ve mentioned, I’m still figuring out pricing - $80 is a quarter of the price and still pretty expensive, but it is definitely more accessible.
Who's your target client? Who are you aiming for?
That varies based on the business. For Surface 604, the target scope is two-pronged. We’re dealing with dealers and consumers. But if I look at the fact that these dealers, even though they’re our customers, are selling to our end consumers, who tend to be a lot more baby boomers. For the powersports business, it’s obviously based around parents. They’re often purchased as gifts, whether for birthdays or holiday seasons. The three weeks leading up to Christmas time is our busiest season by far. Definitely, that targets families there.
How do you network in your industry? How do you meet your contacts and expand your industry base?
I think that within an industry, you just naturally build your contact list by doing day-to-day things that you would do regardless of whether you’re trying to network or not. You know, attend trade shows, talk to other people in the industry whether it be on the manufacturing side or the sales side. [You should] really just interact with as many people in the industry as possible. I would say that is kind of on the company side. When you are an entrepreneur, what’s very important is to have very strong, professional relationships. Have a good lawyer, have a good accountant, have a good banker - those relationships are very important. I think networking on that side is also something that can help. Being strategic as your grow.
Who would you like to work with, partner or collaborate with in the future? Whether this is a company or cause or foundation?
I think that, if I look at the businesses, the first one that comes to mind would be Surface604. A couple of groups that have bought our electric bikes recently have been police departments. The Marquette Police Department did a test run with our bikes, and most recently, the LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) bought a bunch. Given the use case for electric bikes, a fit with the police department, whether it be in beach patrol or wherever else, I can see the value in a bike that can travel at over 20 miles an hour. There can be a lot of benefit in having the ability to move at that speed versus a traditional bicycle where you’re stuck to just pedaling.
So you enjoy seeing your products slowly moving outside of the typical household setting to other real world settings.
Exactly! So to partner with some of these larger groups where they can get a tremendous amount of benefit. Another example is that we sold a bunch of our electric bikes to a fellow who owned 8 Domino’s Pizza franchises. So in a delivery service, especially in the downtown Vancouver area where traffic becomes a growing concern, that’s where the ability to go 20 miles an hour can make a lot of sense. With electric bikes and the accommodating road structures such as bike lanes, you can move with ease as opposed to being in a car. I think that the challenge there ultimately will be is how the legislation will affect riding electric bikes in those bike lanes. When you really look at it, electric biking in North America is at its infancy. When you look at Europe, whether it be Germany or Netherlands, you’re looking at one in four bikes sold being electric. In North America, less than 1% are electric - it’s a fraction. The industry here is growing but very much in its infancy. As it grows and becomes more popular, so will the legislation and the rules around it. A lot more people in Europe use bikes as a mode of transportation whereas here, it’s mostly recreation. Continued use would change the culture over time.
Given your long career and your time in the industry, what would you say are some keys to success for an entrepreneur starting out in the field?
I think that it is primarily in the idea itself. As we’ve talked about a number of times, the ideas that tend to be very successful are the ones that solve problems and are very applicable. I think that no matter how hard you work or how good of a team you may have or any of these other things you need to be successful, if the underlying idea is flawed, you’re dead from the get-go. Secondly, I think having the right team is critical. With a lot of startups and growing companies, you don’t have that team from day 1. But to grow and to become successful, a lot of entrepreneurs look at like they are building a team just as much as they are building an organization. As that team falls into place, so will the growth and the other benefits. For me, something I look at and pay a lot of attention to is scalability. I think that it is very important to identify and focus on opportunities that are scalable. At the end of the day, a lot of people work hard - the hard work tends to be a common trait when it comes to running your own business and see it be successful. But that ceiling for success is capped if that idea is limited in terms of scalability. When you look at that person who, tens years down the road, has the business that is large and successful, a lot of the time, that success is predicated on how scalable that idea and scope is. I think that if you talk to any entrepreneur, they’ll tell you that you can have the right product, work hard, do a lot of the right things and - for better or for worse - timing and luck can play a pretty big role in your success. You have to work hard and put yourself in a position to benefit from that timing and luck. Ultimately, that will dictate your success to some level.
How do you measure your own success? What makes this worth doing for you? What made you want to make this switch from your stable job in finance to going out on your own?
For me, I like being in control of my own destiny and ultimately being fully involved in my projects. I’m a firm believer in my team, and I’ve always had a solid group of guys working with me on these projects. Like any entrepreneurs, you put your whole heart and soul into this. I spend more time with these guys than I do with anyone else, whether it be my girlfriend or my dog or even my family. They really are a close, tight-knit bunch. The whole process of building these businesses up with this group of people is very motivating for me.
As an entrepreneur but also as a person, how have you seen yourself grow over the years?
I would say that I am much more selective on projects and things that I look at and dedicate my time to. As the saying goes, time is money. You only have so much time and as you get involved in more things, that time shrinks in a hurry. I’m not in a position where I can be wasting a lot of time, so I’m very selective when it comes to new projects or ideas or whatnot that I’m evaluating, being much more selective than when I first started. Now, I have a good sense of exactly the direction that I want to take things and the projects that I want to be involved in. I live within that bubble and if it doesn’t fit within that scope, I probably won’t be putting in too much time into them.
Less projects to look through, but more stronger investments, is that right?
Yes. That’s accurate in the sense that I’m a bit unique in the fact that I have a bunch of projects happening simultaneously. Most entrepreneurs are traditionally focused on one idea and spend all of their time and energy working on growing that one idea. To start a business and grow it continuously forward is kind of all-encompassing - it takes a lot of time, effort, energy, resources and human capital to drive those projects forward. I’m lucky to have great project managers to be on top of these separate companies to help me juggle these different ventures. Yet, it’s still very challenging. There’s no question that if I spent all of my time on one project, that company would be further along that me focusing on these four together. I have goals and objectives, and I see a growth path for all of my companies. They align with my goals and values, and this drives me.
What are your responsibilities as the business owner? What changes when working with a team versus working with your own team and chasing your own dream and idea?
I think the difference there is that I view my job and my role as making sure that my team has all the resources to be successful. First and foremost, you’re providing the direction. We’re at point A, and this is what point B looks like. Here are a clear set of objectives to get there. Next is to make sure that the team has all the resources and tools that they need to accomplish and get to point B.
Given the type of business you own where you have multiple products that you create, manufacture, and distribute, how would you summarize your strategy for realizing an idea from a thought for a solution that the world needs to an actual product that you can launch?
I think that for the existing business or the electric bike business, a lot of that feedback and research and development around launching new products is based off feedback that we’d received from our dealers and the market. We take this information and see if we can deliver a product that meets the demand for this particular notion that is not being served right now. I would say that for the existing businesses, a lot of that is in conjunction with our dealer network. For a startup, you have the idea in and of itself. For the toothbrush, it was to develop a high-end electric toothbrush that could be presented at a price point that was lower than the regular, dominant competitors. Then it turned to whether or not I can actually make the product, whether I can achieve this level of quality but also pricing. Once that’s complete, the next step is whether I can actually deliver this. Let’s say I can deliver this product, but what do production times look like? It’s great that I can make a product in demand, but if the lead time is looking at 12 months, that’s going to be a real challenge looking back at the scalability of this endeavour. The first step is having the idea, and then how you can feasibly deliver this.

The Long Haul
AU where Shawn is in Uni before he decides to pursue music, and the rise to fame is less like a catapult and more like a really long walk uphill. There’s a lot of no’s, a lot of empty shows, but he’s got his girl and his guitar for the long haul.
(possible miniseries) Its definitely set up like the first part of a series, but I’m still trying to figure out if I want to continue it, so please let me know what you think of it/ if you’d want to read more!
Tumblr media
You’ve known Shawn almost your entire life, but only from a distance. You grew up in Pickering and attended the same schools, but you just didn’t run in the same circle, never really sharing the same friends. You always thought he was cute and respectful, something that can’t be said for all the boys in school. It wasn’t until after high school, when you both started attending the University of Toronto, that you actually started talking to him. That was over a year ago, and now he’s your boyfriend, thanks to a crazy turn of events you never would have predicted. The two of you had kind of stumbled together and never really separated since, something you wouldn’t change or trade for the world.
You had no idea that Shawn sang until after you started dating. You didn’t even know he played the guitar or piano until later too. You knew Shawn played hockey throughout high school and decided to major in business economics, a predictable path for a boy like him. He chose a University less than an hour from his hometown, majoring in something that would put him on a career path similar to his dad, which was exactly what seemed to always be expected of him. There’s nothing wrong with that, and he never gave any intention that he was unhappy with his life.
It wasn’t until a month ago when you were lying on Shawn’s bed, and he was sitting in his desk chair, stressed about an upcoming exam, that he first voiced a desire to do anything with his music beside keeping a secret book of songs that he wouldn’t even let you see.
You knew he was stressed with midterms coming up, so you just ignored his offhand comment of Maybe I’ll just become a singer. You were both stressed, and you know as well as anybody that when the stress becomes too much everyone always begins looking for ways out, joking about taking leave of absences or switching majors to something easier or dropping out to work in a restaurant, anything that takes the pressure off the next assignment or the next exam. You thought that was exactly what Shawn was doing.
You have always secretly loved that he’s a musician, even if he wouldn’t call himself one or admit it. He won’t even really sing in front of other people, at least not at organized events, which is why you didn’t take his comment seriously. He’ll sing in his dorm room to you and whoever happens to be passing in the hall outside his open door. He’ll trek his guitar with him to bonfires with your friends and he’ll play and sing, his cheeks rosy from the cold. He’ll sit around the Christmas tree with his family, pull out his guitar and force them to sing along with him. But he’s never put himself out there as a musician.
When it comes to singing in front of people, he doesn’t exactly see the point for him. At least that’s what he told you the first and last time it came up when you questioned if he has stage fright.
“No, I’m not scared, It’s just not my thing. I just don’t know why I’d want to do that.”
“What do you mean? You’re great, and you’re not sharing it with the world.”
“I don’t think anyone wants to listen. I just do it when I’m stressed or for fun. I’m going into a career in business, not music.”
And that was the end of that conversation over a year ago, just a few weeks into your first semester at Uni and a week into dating. Shawn was a realist only because he wasn’t ready to let the dreamer inside him out. You never brought it up again, but you did notice that Shawn started to spend more and more time locked in his room just working on music his actual textbooks forgotten on his desk. Even though no one knew him as a musician, in his own way, in his own time, he was turning into one.
-
“I’m thinking of doing an open mic night.” Shawn says to you as you sit beside him on the couch eating dinner and watching the latest episode of Grey’s Anatomy.
You’re caught off guard, so you reach over and pause the episode in order to give this conversation your full attention. “An open mic night?” You question, “Singing?” He just nods, shoveling more food into his mouth, unfazed by how shocked you are right now. “When?”
“Next Friday. Derek’s organizing one at that new coffee shop. He said I could sign up if I want.” He says it all so nonchalantly, like its no big deal, when it is.
“And you want to?” You don’t mean to sound unsupportive, you’re just shocked.
He shrugs, “Yeah, why not.”
You don’t want to mention the reasons why not that he’s mentioned to you before because you think he’s great and you think other people should be able to appreciate him too, so you say, “I think that’s awesome, babe. I think you should do it if you want to.”
He nods, looking like he’s thinking more about it and about what you just said. He doesn’t reply, though. Instead, he just continues to eat. After a few more seconds, he leans over and un-pauses the episode, and the two of you finish your meal without exchanging any more words on that topic.
-
Shawn’s true to his word, and he signs up for the open mic night after getting more information about it. It’s the night before the performance. You’re sprawled out across Shawn’s bed as he paces the room, absentmindedly playing his guitar like he has been nonstop for the last three hours. “I like that John Mayer song,” You suggest, just wanting to see him calm his nerves and finally choose a song.
“I only get one.” He says, as though you weren’t completely aware of that.
“I know, it’s going to be great. It’ll be a great way to start performing, see if it’s fun, you know?”
He nods, starting to play the song you suggested. He’s nervous, but in true Shawn fashion, he’s also oddly calm.
He stops mid-song to turn to you and say, “Okay, and if it’s a shitshow, we’ll go get greasy burgers and milkshakes at that diner you like and pretend it never happened?”
“Yeah, if,” You say, making sure to emphasize the “if,” before adding, “But when it goes great, we can still go to the diner, and talk about how amazing it was until 1am.”
He nods, and you smile, knowing he feels reassured by your statement, which is all you were trying to do. You have confidence in him. He’s going to do great. Even though he hasn’t performed for an audiencet before, Shawn somehow calms down whenever he has his guitar in his hands. You’ve seen him stressed before, seen the way he grabs his guitar and plays until his fingers hurt, sings until his voice is hoarse. Singing and playing guitar is one of the things he enjoys most in this world. Its about time he lets other people appreciate all of his hard work and the talent he has.
-
The next evening, you show up to the coffee shop early with Shawn, getting coffee and chatting with some other people you know there as Shawn talks to Derek, making sure that his guitar will be good to go when it’s time.
You find seats for you and Shawn near the front. Even though the event won’t be very big, and the back of the room is clearly visible from the stage, you want to make sure Shawn has a good view of you when he’s performing. Just in case he gets nervous, at least he’ll know you’re there and be able to see you. Shawn finishes checking everything with Derek and he slides into the seat beside you just as Derek gets onstage to open the night and introduce the first performer. Shawn nervously rests his hand on your thigh, squeezing gently, and you place your arm around his back, hoping to help calm his nerves.
You sit through the first few performances: a couple spoken word poets, someone playing the violin, and another singer. Then, it’s Shawn’s turn. He shakes off the nerves and you give his hand one last squeeze before he stands and approaches the stage. He flashes a nervous smile to the small but attentive crowd as he strums his guitar once. He takes a deep breath, raking his fingers through his hair before leaning closer to the mic. “I’m just going to play a cover for you all tonight. I hope you like John Mayer.” As soon as he strums the first few chords, a confidence comes out of him that you didn’t expect. You sing along the whole time, making eye-contact with Shawn when he looks to you in the audience.
As he strums the last chord, the audience claps loudly, some even shouting and cheering. The smile on Shawn’s face is huge and he just takes everything in for a few seconds before saying, “Thank you.” And stepping off the stage to put his guitar back in the case before finding his way back to the seat beside you to watch the rest of the artists. Even though you know you’re biased, you’re still pretty sure that Shawn got one of the loudest responses from the crowd so far. He’s on an adrenaline high when he steps off the stage, and it remains even as the remainder of the artists perform one by one. After the show, Shawn makes sure to thank Derek for letting him perform, and Derek lets Shawn know how good he was, promising to keep in touch because he’s putting on another event soon, not an open mic night, but one with actual featured artists, and he’s interested in having Shawn perform there.
Derek asks if you both would like to stick around because a few of them are going out for drinks after finishing up there. You wouldn’t have minded going out with them for some celebratory drinks over how well the evening went. But Shawn just looks to you briefly before saying, “Sorry man, we have plans already, but thanks for the invite. And I’ll talk to you soon about the event?”
“Of course, I think you’ve already got yourself some fans here, so it’ll be great to have you out again!” Derek enthusiastically replies before you say your goodbyes to him and others you know.
Once you’re outside in the chilly night air, you pull your sweater closer to yourself, asking, “Why did you say no? We could have gone out with them.”
He just smiles over at you, taking your hand in his as he leads you to his car. “Because we have plans for burgers and milkshakes, and I’ve been looking forward to it all night.”
You just smile and nod your approval because you felt the same way. Although you wouldn’t want to keep Shawn from going to hang out with new people or socializing and celebrating the success of the night, you were really looking forward to your corner booth in the diner, and some quality time to end the night.
So that’s exactly what you do. You take your usual booth, ordering the same thing you always get. Shawn shares with you some of the thoughts that were running through his head onstage, and you’re starting to see he might be really serious about this music thing.
An hour turns into two, and the leftover fries get cold, but you still pick at one every so often as the conversation shifts to other topics and Shawn has you laughing so hard your stomach hurts.

I totaled my car. No insurance. Still owe money to the bank! Want to refinance. Help!!!?
Ok here's the deal. I financed a car through a dealership (1st time buying a car) and got completely taken. I didn't understand the paperwork, and the person selling told me that the GAP insurance would take care of me if the car was totaled. What I failed to realize was I needed to have full coverage to have the GAP insurance!! I only have liability insurance. I totaled the car. I still owe $8000 to the bank. I've had the car for 8 months and the bank has never come after me to get full coverage insurance; I'm not sure why. I haven't told the bank that I totaled the car, and I'm trying to pay the loan off as quick I can. In the mean-time I've kept the liability insurance on it, so as not to alert the bank, but I would rather drop the insurance since it is just wasted money at this point. I also want to drop the GAP insurance and the extended warranty they sold me, but again I don't want to alert the bank that I don't have full coverage. Any advice appreciated!!!""

Auto insurance is a hit or miss conception with police enforcement doing the insurance company's work for them. Too many drivers have no insurance leaving responsible drivers to pick up their tab. day6 concert + hitouch experience (171029 toronto)
i’ve known about day6 since they appeared on that episode of YG’s Win, back when they were known as 5live. i wasn’t really part of the fandom for the past 2 years (i supported them when they released congratulations but after that i kind of fell out of the k-music scene...) but i’m glad that i recently rediscovered their music and their everyday6 project. they’re my 3rd favourite group/band at the moment and i’m sooo happy i got to see and meet them!!!
on concert day, my sister and i arrived at the venue at around 40 minutes before doors opened. the concert hall was inside a convention centre, so it’s a good thing that we didn’t have to wait outside in the freezing weather. we chatted with some other fans, who helped us get the paper hearts and banners to hold up during I Smile and You Were Beautiful! that was really nice of them.
we lined up to go in, and it was funny because the MTCC staff member who scanned my sister’s ticket asked her how much it was and looked absolutely shocked when my sister said that it was $250. that’s how i felt too when my broke uni student ass bought the ticket... but after going to the concert i can say that it was 100% worth it.
the concert hall holds around 1200 people, and there were seats(!) which was novel to the both of us because for every concert that we’ve been to so far we were in mosh pits lol. i was honestly a little bit tired while i was waiting in my seat but as soon as the lights went out, that all went away.
the moment when the artist makes their first appearance is always one of the best parts of a concert for me, especially if it’s my first time seeing them. my sister and i were freaking the fuck out because it dawned on us like, holy shit, day6 were there and they’re REAL. their first two songs were I Wait and Hunt, and all i have to say is that day6 sound AMAZING live. their mp3s are already really good, but the live experience is on a whole other level. i thought their voices would be kind of dead bc toronto was the last stop (and a lot of their songs have very intense vocals) but they still sounded almost exactly like their CD. after that, they introduced themselves. i was screaming my head off for brian (as was everyone else in the venue... he obviously got the most attention all night). then they performed I’m Serious and Man in a Movie (two of my favourite songs!), which they also killed. the whole time i was just in awe because of how good they sounded.
after these two songs it was q&a time, and to be honest i’m actually starting to forget some of their answers (it was 2 days ago)… i’m not gonna rehash all of the answers bc they’re probably on twitter but i just want to say that i really liked how the non-english-speaking members made efforts to speak english. dowoon and wonpil’s accents were super cute, and sungjin is actually really good at english. he even pronounced toronto the proper way! thx for telling him, brian. anyway it made me feel quite appreciated, because even though they could have relied on the translator, they still went out of their way to connect with us and speak our language. when dowoon was telling his story he said “i am not shy!” in english and everyone died.
the games were pretty fun and cute, although i personally thought that they went on for a little bit too long. during ‘intermission’ they put on brian’s vlog, which showed brian talking about how good it was to be back, and the members going to eaton centre (where sungjin sang hotline bling lol). wonpil and jae also talked about how cold toronto was, which was hilarious.
after intermission they performed some of their iconic songs, Congratulations and You Were Beautiful. to introduce You Were Beautiful, brian told the crowd “you’re so 예뻤어” and everyone freaked out (including me...). during these songs i noticed that brian seemed to be having a bit of trouble with his instrument, and i wasn’t hearing/feeling any of the bass either. then during the final ment he was basically like “lol my bass somehow got unplugged after the games and i had to fake jam to the songs.” but to be honest i’m not sure if a lot of people noticed, because they still performed so well.
the speeches that all of the members prepared for their final ment were so touching. jae’s speech was especially memorable... he talked about how he performed a lot in korea, but this north american tour was the experience that made him realize and accept that he’s actually a musician now. he also talked about how it felt really good to speak in his mother tongue, and perform in front of people who grew up in the same culture as him. the other members talked similarly about how they feel that things are falling in place now, and how thankful they are for mydays ;; it was definitely emotional.
after the final ment they played Letting Go and I Smile. and then they “left”, and came back for the encore, where they played Dance Dance (my favourite song of theirs!!!) and Freely. Dance Dance was, for lack of a better word, lit. i’m so so so happy that i got to see them perform it live! it was my favourite performance of the entire show. also, during freely, it’s usually jae who jumps into the crowd but then... brian passed his bass to jae, JAE STARTED PLAYING THE BASS, AND THEN BRIAN WENT INTO THE CROWD. i was watching all of this happen like “holy shit!!!” he looked so happy dancing with the crowd, and he even shouted “day6 jjang!” lmao.
the concert ended after that, and i definitely think that my hearing got damaged but its okay because the volume of screams just proved that it was a hell of a show. brian and wonpil were the last to leave, and brian was blowing kisses to the crowd ;__;
and then it was hi-touch time! since i was in row q (the furthest p2 row), we got to go first. the first member was sungjin, and i am not exaggerating when i say that photos truly do not do him justice. he hi-fived me and said “thank you”. i was like, “no, thank you!!!” and he smiled at me so kindly. since we were the first group to go up we didn’t know the order beforehand, so in that moment i found out that the next member was brian. he looked at me and said “hey!” and i swear to god, in that moment my brain short-circuited. i had so many things that i planned to say to him (welcome back, etc.) but all i could do was say “HEY!” and smile at him. he smiled sooo widely at me!!! and he genuinely looked so happy to see me!!! i deadass stared at him for 3 seconds because i was so shook... maybe he was expecting me to say something else but either way i hope he could see how whipped i am excited i was to meet him. dowoon was next, and i’m sad that i can’t remember much about him but he nodded and smiled when i said that it was nice to meet him. he’s adorable. after dowoon was jae (who is v tall), and he nodded and thanked me in a very chill, north american way. the final member was wonpil, and he smiled and nodded as i thanked him for the great show. (wonpil was kind of shy for the entire show but i could tell how thankful he was for everyone’s support. during performances there were times where he’d look out at the crowd in awe)
they’re all super handsome in person, and seeing them up close also made me realize how much makeup they wear lol. they were probably exhausted from the show, but they were very professional and had wide smiles and made eye contact with everyone! looking back, i wish i said more to the members, but i guess hi-touch is usually a very quick process. plus, it makes me want to go to another concert of theirs and say more to them next time.
i cannot stress enough how good of a show day6 put on for the fans. they were already one of my favourite bands, but wow, that was a life-changing concert. the withdrawal symptoms are so real right now. i usually listen to my day6 playlist to cheer myself up whenever i’m stressed/sad/etc. (which, ngl, seems to be happening a lot these days) and it was just so meaningful to watch them perform those songs live. the fact that it was a smaller, more intimate venue made it 10x better in my opinion. needless to say, i haven’t felt this happy in a long time and i’m definitely going to their concert the next time they come to toronto. hopefully they will come back with a full-length concert :’)

Yes my boyfriend will go to UofT downtown. We’re staying in res because we’re not from Toronto so I’m worried about privacy… We’ll have roommates Also he’s doing computer science, at UofT so I think the workload will be crazy. He got accepted to York too but decided to go to UofT even though he’ll probably have harder classes there :/ I’m just worried, I heard all these things from my family and older friends that usually when you go to college your high school relationship ends unless you’re both going to same college or still living at home maybe. We’re in the same city but looking at the TTC buses and subway, it still takes 50 minutes to get to each other and back, we won’t have privacy in our rooms unless we coordinate with our roommates but I barely know mine and Idk if it would be weird to ask “oh btw can you be somewhere else one night a week so my bf can come over?” :/ I thought about studying together but we’re obviously not gonna take the same courses, he’s in computer science and I’m in psychology. I’m taking mostly gen eds this year and a psych course but almost all his classes are comp sci (UofT didn’t give him a choice, he had a bunch of prereqs to take) Then there’s the competition between York and UofT, mostly UofT students criticizing York “if you can hold a fork you can go to York” I guess it’s sort of true but York is still a good university and to be honest I decided to go there because it’s a good program but not too hard and the social life seems way better than UofT. Plus I’ll need to get a masters degree in psychology so I need good grades which is obviously easier to achieve at York than UofT. But I feel like a lot of UofT students look down on York people, especially when it comes to dating them because they go to an “inferior university”. My bf won’t care but his friends will and it’s just gonna be awkward, and I don’t know how it will affect our relationship so there are multiple factors (some distance, workload at UofT, UofT versus York) I didn’t get into UofT and apparently they don’t take transfer students so I couldn’t transfer there even if I wanted to risk my grades
I’m sorry it’s more of a rant than a question. I haven’t seen many questions about people asking about relationships especially in first year. Did any of you go through something similar (were in a relationship in grade 12 and went to different colleges)? Did you end it? Did you try to stay together and how did that work? Any positive experiences, because all I’ve heard from family and friends has been pretty negative… Like the odds of staying together for more than a semester are low :(
Hi anon,
Tbh this whole rivalry or looking down on people for going to a specific university is first year/high school type of behaviour and mentality, any upper year or mature students I’ve met at any university never talk like that. I’ve had friends who’ve gone to UofT, Ryerson, UOIT, Waterloo, McMaster, and York, yet we all have the same amount of respect for each other. Just because you go to a university like UofT does not mean you’re better or smarter than anyone else, I’ve met plenty of smart people at York and they can match anyone going to any other university.
It’s true that a lot of relationships do fizzle out when you make the transition from high school to university, but I think it’s more to do with the fact that people change. University is an experience that forces you to grow and look at life from different perspectives, you’re exposed to different types of people from different backgrounds and have varying opinions, it really opens your mind to other things in life. The type of students who go to York are much more liberal minded then some students who may go to UofT, even the atmosphere is completely different from my pov, however this doesn’t necessarily mean your relationship will dissolve because of it. If your bf doesn’t care what others think then why are you thinking so much into it? Aren’t you being your own worst enemy in this scenario?
If you and your bf truly want to be together you will take out time for each other, even if it means commuting to a specific destination. So what if you’re in two different programs, why should that stop you from having study dates or spending time together? I personally believe that if you want a relationship to work, even a friendship, you will take the initiative to make it happen. If you make excuses then you will just be met with disappointments. You need to have a conversation with your bf and figure out how you will both manage your time and how to work around your schedule.
Okay then get an Airbnb if that alone time is important to you. I mean you’re coming up with reason after reason as to why things might fail when you haven’t even reached the point of trying yet.
York is not an easy university unfortunately, we have to debunk this myth every year to new students who think that, and neither are you in an easy program (I used to be a Psychology major). The masters program in Psychology is pretty competitive at York, you have to get straight A’s to even be considered as they only have 40 spots in their post-grad program, so you’ll have to work hard to get there. I agree, York is a good university even if some people are extremely biased against it, and you shouldn’t regret your decision, you chose the perfect place to study Psych.
Whether your relationship works out or not will be entirely dependent on you and your bf, people’s relationship don’t work out after high school because they grow out of the immature phase and become mature adults who have different priorities in life. If you and your partner can work through things as you grow I don’t see any reason as to why it should end. I have a friend who’s been with her bf since high school, they both went to different universities for both undergrad and post-grad, now they’re getting married - they’ve been through everything together and made it work even when she wasn’t living in Toronto. So, that in itself is a testaments of their efforts. I know plenty of people who make it work because both partners have different career goals, but they respect that and make time for each other whenever they can, while understanding that it’s important for the other to choose a different path. I hope that offers some consolation.
Feel free to send us updates or rants if you still want to talk and hear our perspectives. : )

Disclaimer: I am very blunt and nowhere as nice as H is. I’m still a nice person and still care about your issues but ... I’m blunt as heck.
Lady, you gotta chill. Yea hs relationships don’t usually last past grade 12 because of a multitude of factors:
y’all grow and change, for better or for worse
y’all meet new people on campus, off campus, etc.
y’all find new interests and they may not align with each other’s
y’all realize that y’all in a relationship because of proximity (i.e. y’all live close and there weren’t better choices around), and not via actual passion
My advice is to try your best and ride it out, and if it ends up being meh, at least y’all tried. No regrets.
Canadian employers look at what each school’s trump card is. So yea, York is a liberal arts school (known for education, Schulich’s business, kin, and some political stuff), and U of T is more of a science-based school. It’s totally cool that your dude chose U of T for comp sci… it’s a type of science. I trust that you chose York not because of easy grades (there’s no “easy” courses… if you like it, it becomes easy. A course is hard if it’s not something you’re interested in), but that you chose it because York is known for psych.
The rivalry between universities is only remotely significant for people in uni, but after you graduate, everyone understands that each school has its own specialty. Similarly, it’d be silly to go to UWO to be a math major or OCADU for English. If his friends are being immature… well, do you even want to be their friend and be associated with them?
University years are years where you’ll make the most important choices in your personal and professional life. Split with people who are babies, and grow with those who respect you. That’s all I gotta say.
Peace out.

Better Left Unsaid
Request: can you write a blurb of best friend Shawn not being able to hide his feeling from you anymore after seeing you with a guy or just seeing you smile from across the room?? with a generous dash of angst.
A/n: Buckle up, it’s a long one (somewhere over 5k). I think it was worth the wait. The request was for angst, and i’m not the best with angst, but I gave it my best shot. Hope you enjoy!! I always appreciate feedback so feel free to drop a comment in my ask.

~
You’ve known Shawn since you were still kids in school together. Before he was Shawn Mendes, the singer, and before you moved away from Toronto to attend Uni, you were like two peas in a pod. Now, those days feel like a lifetime ago, but you’ve still remained close to Shawn, despite how much everything changed. Even though you barely see Shawn anymore because of his career, and you being off at Uni, you still talk to him quite often, which is pretty impressive considering how busy you both are.
The holidays are one of the only times that you can count on seeing Shawn, since you’re rarely home when he’s in Toronto and he’s rarely home when you are. Usually, you spend a lot of time over the holidays with Shawn when he’s back home. Any time not with your family is usually spent with Shawn, either just the two of you or with your larger group of friends.
This break is a tiny bit different because your boyfriend came home with you. You’ve only been dating for less than a month, but you both thought it would be a good opportunity for him to meet your family since you rarely come home to Toronto. If he didn’t come with you this holiday, he probably would not meet your family for a long time, so it just made sense for him to come, even though it might seem like you’re moving a bit fast.
Not telling Shawn you were bringing your new boyfriend home for the holidays was an accident. A big one, but still an accident nonetheless.
You’ve been home for a week already, but Shawn just arrived last night. So of course, you find at yourself at Shawn’s condo with all of your friends. Shawn invited all of his core friends, your main group that you’ve kept in touch with since high school. Once you received Shawn’s text, you immediately called him, realizing that you had forgotten to mention to Shawn that Tyler was home with you. The conversation was short and Shawn sounded distracted when you told him that Tyler was home and asked if it was okay if he could come too. Shawn, of course, said yes, but he was not nearly as enthused to meet your boyfriend as you thought he’d be. After ending the call, you wrote it off as Shawn was probably just busy thinking about a million other things, and it would be different at the party.
However, its not different. Shawn isn’t acting like you’re used to him acting. He’s been mostly silent since you walked into his condo. Too silent, especially for Shawn on a night like this. He likes to let loose and just have fun when his friends are over. He loves having everyone over and getting to forget all of his stresses, but it doesn’t seem like he’s doing that much tonight.
Shawn’s on his third Corona, and it’s been less than an hour, not to mention the shots he took with the guys shortly after you arrived, and you don’t know what or how much he drank before you showed up. You don’t mean to count, or to have been paying more attention to Shawn than to Tyler, but you can’t help it. Tyler hit it off with all of your friends, especially the guys. He’s great at talking to people and actually loves meeting new people, which is one of the things that you like the most about him.
Shawn is the same way, normally. Since high school, Shawn really came out of his shell and grew into himself, and you’re often pleasantly surprised by Shawn’s ability to connect with people so naturally. Tonight, though, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Despite Tyler’s easygoing and amicable demeanor, Shawn isn’t vibing with him, and he hasn’t said more than two words to Tyler or to you. In fact, he’s been on his phone and disengaged all evening.
You want to let yourself be thrilled over the fact that your boyfriend gets along so well with your friends. You want to be able to focus on that and to enjoy yourself, but something just doesn’t feel right between you and Shawn. Something doesn’t feel right with Shawn. When you first got here, you introduced Shawn and Tyler. Of all of your friends, Shawn is the one who’s opinion you value most because he’s the one who’s been there for you through everything, and he’s the one who knows you the best. If you’re honest, that’s why you’ve been watching Shawn so carefully tonight, because you want to know what he thinks of Tyler.
Finally, when you can’t take it anymore, you take your still full beer and excuse yourself from your conversation with your friends. Your heart wasn’t in it anyway.
You find yourself making your way into the kitchen. At first, you think you’ll find Tyler, and stand by him, see how he’s doing. But your body seems to have other plans as you instead continue to scan the room, even though you spotted Tyler right away. You don’t realize it at first, but you’re looking for someone, and it isn’t Tyler, it’s Shawn, who’s nowhere to be found.
On your second scan of the room, Tyler catches your eye and smiles, winking at you from his spot near the counter. At any other party, on any other night, that would make your heart skip a beat and draw you to where he is within a second, but it doesn’t this time. Your eyes keep scanning the room before they catch on a blurry figure out on the balcony. Its winter. In Toronto. The balcony is not the place to be, but that’s where he is, so whether you like it or not, there’s no question in your mind that’s where you’re headed. You scurry to the front entrance, where your coat is one of many. It takes a few seconds for you to pull it on, your drink long since forgotten and left unattended on the table.
The cold hits you as soon as you open the door, and you don’t wonder why no one else is out here. Shivering, you pull your coat closer to you, trying to keep the warmth of your body close to you. He doesn’t hear you coming because when you reach him and touch his shoulder, he jumps, startled. When he sees its you, his gaze turns back to the city lights.
“What are you doing out here all alone?” You question, knowing Shawn is normally in his element with these people. He’s always at the center of whatever is happening. He’s never alone when his friends are over.
“Needed some fresh air.” He mumbles, “And space.”
You know that’s your hint. He wants you to go inside. He wants you to leave him alone. He doesn’t want to talk. You pick up on hints like these, but you don’t always act on them. This time, you won’t.
“You’ve been acting strange all night.” You comment, realizing after you say it that it may not have been the best way to approach this subject, but the words are already out, hanging heavy in the freezing air between you two.
“Have I?” The sarcasm in his voice is hard to miss. You’re not used to Shawn acting like this, especially not targeted at you.
You swallow hard, taking a few seconds to gather your own anxious thoughts. “Are you mad at me?” It comes out as nearly a whisper, and at first, you’re not sure if Shawn heard you. He doesn’t answer right away, making you think he either didn’t hear or he’s ignoring you. Either way, you’re just gaining the courage to ask again, but louder, when he speaks.
“I’m not mad at you.” He turns toward you. Finally, you can see his dark brown eyes staring back at you. He’s been your constant for so long, despite busy schedules and distance. You can’t stand the thought of him being upset with you. You can’t stand the thought of Shawn keeping something from you. Clearly something’s bothering him, and he hasn’t told you.
You want to ask him. More than that, you want him to talk to you, not because you’re forcing him to, but because he wants to. You don’t ask. You don’t get much of a chance to before he backs up from the railing, turning back towards the sliding glass door leading inside.
“It’s cold. Don’t stay out too long.” Is all he says before leaving you alone. You don’t follow him. You don’t want to go back inside. You don’t want to be here anymore. The temperature isn’t the only reason you’re cold outside alone.
“What are you doing out here?” Tyler calls from the doorway. You don’t know how long you’ve been outside, but you turn around to the sound of his voice.
All of a sudden, you realize just how cold really you are, cold all the way to your bones. Your eyes wander to the people inside. All the lights are on, so you can see everyone clearly, although they probably can’t see you.
“It’s freezing babe, come back inside.” Tyler says, shivering at the cold because he hadn’t put his jacket back on.
You walk to meet him in the doorway, and he pulls you inside before shutting the door securely behind you. “I’m ready to go, can we just get out of here?” You ask in response to the subtle questioning look he’s giving you.
“We didn’t even go to the bar yet.” He says sounding a little disappointed to hear you want to leave so early. After spending last night with your family and no alcohol, you know he was looking forward to letting loose.
“I don’t feel good.” It’s not entirely a lie. “You can still go, though.” You’re not trying to ruin his night too just because yours isn’t going so well.
“I’m sure standing outside in the cold didn’t help.”
You immediately feel irritated by his unnecessary comment. It’s not his fault that you’re upset, and you shouldn’t take it out on him, but he hasn’t even tried to ask what’s going on with you. Although a part of you is annoyed by that and by his comment, you’re also glad he doesn’t ask. Because how are you supposed to explain to your boyfriend that the reason you’re upset is because another boy, a friend, has barely spoken to you tonight? He wouldn’t take it well, you already know. Whether or not Tyler will ever admit it, he’s intimidated by Shawn. It’s hard not to be intimidated by someone like Shawn.
You hesitate now. You don’t really want to drive back to Pickering by yourself. You had been staying at your family home in Pickering, and the plan was to head back late tonight. Now, that doesn’t seem like a good idea, and you know that Tyler has his heart set on going out tonight.
“I’m going to go lie down. You should go. Have fun. Stay out as long as you want.” You say, turning away before he grabs your hand to get your attention.
“What’s wrong, y/n?” He questions, genuinely concerned. He does care about you, and you love him for it. But that’s not enough to get Shawn’s behavior off your mind or force you out with him tonight.
“I just don’t feel up to going out tonight.” You respond, wanting nothing more than to be alone. You’re going to go lie down in Shawn’s bed, knowing he probably wouldn’t mind. If he didn’t seem so upset with you earlier, you’d be confident he wouldn’t mind. Now you’re just relatively sure he’d be okay with it. He wouldn’t kick you out, you know that much. If you did something so bad to warrant that, you’d know what you did. Right now, you don’t, so you can’t have done anything that horrible.
“Where are you going?” He asks.
“I’m just going to lie down. Just come back here when you’re done, and we can go? Or maybe just crash here for the night.” You suggest, still wanting to just be in bed, in Shawn’s bed. Alone, of course. He lets go after squeezing your hand one last time. “I won’t stay long.”
“I’m probably going to sleep. Stay as long as you want.” You don’t mean to sound dismissive, but you can tell it comes off that way. You don’t give yourself any time to regret it before leaving. You quickly use the restroom, digging around under the bathroom sink for the makeup wipes and toothbrush you left here a while back. With Shawn’s condo in the Toronto, you knew you’d be crashing there once in a while after going out, and you didn’t have to worry about not having anything to take your makeup off with or brush your teeth. The makeup wipes, you left for him too, knowing that it’d come in handy when he has a girl over. You made sure he knew where they were if someone ever needed them. It was your best friend duty to help him with stuff like that.
When you’re finished in the bathroom, you quietly make your way to Shawn’s room, closing the door behind you and successfully shutting out some of the noise. He has a guest bedroom, but the guys are always crashing there and even sometimes hanging out there when they’re all over, and you don’t want to be bothered tonight. Shawn’s room is the only place in the condo where you’re pretty confident you won’t be bothered by anyone, except Shawn.
It’s still not even midnight. You’re tired, but not that tired. You crawl under the covers and turn off the lights. The sound of people talking and laughing can still be heard through the closed doors, but you’re hoping they’ll head out soon and leave you in peace.
You’re scrolling through twitter, absentmindedly when the door swings open, the sounds from the kitchen and living room becoming significantly louder. When you look up, you’re not surprised to see Shawn. At first you try to explain yourself, suddenly feeling like a child who was just caught doing something wrong. After that conversation outside on the balcony, even though it can barely be called a conversation, you’re thinking maybe you shouldn’t be here in his bed. Maybe you’re not as close of friends as you thought and crashing in his bed is something reserved for close friends only, something Shawn is making it seem like you no longer fit.
He shakes his head dismissively when you explain that you weren’t feeling well and wanted to rest instead of going out. When you stop talking, he sits at the foot of the bed, and you sit up, pulling your knees to your chest, watching him in silence. “What are you doing, y/n?” He finally asks.
This question causes you to knit your eyebrows in confusion, you had just explained. “I didn’t want to go out.” You state simply, beyond confused by Shawn’s behavior.
“No, not right now, I mean, yes, but…you…it seems like…” Shawn’s good with words, so seeing him fumbling around for the right ones in this moment is something that doesn’t happen often.
“What are you talking about?” You question, wanting to know what he’s trying to get at, and also curious as to why he’s having such a hard time getting the words out. You know that part of his career depends on his ability to talk to people, and you know he’s great at it, you’ve seen it. And even more confusing, you’re not just anyone, you’re you and he’s Shawn and he’s never had problems talking to you before, about anything.
“Are you happy with Tyler?” The question catches you off guard. You hadn’t really talked to Shawn much about Tyler before. You weren’t even sure Shawn knew his name. It was all so new still. You had told Shawn about Tyler a couple months ago when you first started seeing him, but he hadn’t come up much more in conversation. This is also one of the reasons why it just slipped your mind and you forgot to mention Tyler coming home with you.
You think back to Tyler and the life you have with him. It’s still so new, but you like being with him. You like having him there for you. His apartment building is just across the street from yours on your Uni campus, and it’s nice to have someone to eat dinner with most nights and someone to go with to parties. It’s different than just having friends, and you like that. Tyler is your first boyfriend since attending Uni, and it’s so much easier to do life away from home with him by your side, because, in a way, he’s become home to you.
The question isn’t a difficult one, at least it shouldn’t be, so you’re not sure why it takes so long for you to reply. Finally, you say, “Yes.” It comes out more of a whisper, and you try to make it seem more definitive by nodding your head when you say it, but Shawn notices the hesitation.
“Are you sure?” He questions staring at you so sincerely, you’re almost sure he’s looking straight into your soul.
“Yeah, why are you asking?”
He pauses now, breaking eye contact for a second before looking up again, nodding. “Okay, I just want you to be happy.”
You manage a small smile. That’s no surprise. Shawn has always only wanted the best for you, and the same goes for you with him. Its why you’ve made such good friends despite everything crazy that’s happened in the past few years.
“He’s a good guy, Shawn.” As the words leave your mouth, you’re not sure if its him you’re trying to convince or you.
“I believe you.” He says, but he’s not making eye contact with you anymore, and he stands abruptly, heading towards the door and leaving you even more confused.
“Are you guys leaving soon?” You ask, and he turns back to you, halfway between the bed and the door.
“Are you really not feeling well?” He counters your question with one of his own.
This causes you to shrug. “Just didn’t feel like going out.” Honesty with Shawn is always the best option. Most times, you can’t avoid honesty with him, even if you want to. “You’ve been acting strange all night, and I don’t know, I guess it made me feel off all night too. And I just didn’t want to go out.” The words come tumbling out before you can stop them.
“It’s nothing, y/n. Don’t worry about it.” He tries reassuring you, but you’re still worried. Maybe even more worried since he’s still not telling you what is on his mind. “I’m fine. I’ll be fine.” He says.
“Me too, I’m just going to stay in, though.” You stand firm in your decision. He nods, accepting that you’re more stubborn than he is.
“Is Tyler staying with you?” He asks, and you shake your head.
“I told him to go. He deserves a night out after spending a week with my family.”
“They can be a bit much for the unprepared.” He acknowledges, and you smile at him because for the first time tonight things are starting to feel normal between you two.
He checks his watch. “I better go, I was just supposed to come in here for my jacket. I didn’t know you were in here.”
“Sorry,” You reply, reminded once again that you didn’t even ask to crash in his bed.
“No don’t be. You know I don’t mind. I just have to go. We’ll be back by two. I’ll look out for Tyler.”
You didn’t ask him to, but you’re grateful he said he would look out for Tyler. That’s as close as you’re going to get to hearing any sort of approval from Shawn toward Tyler. You thank him and roll onto your side, pulling the blankets up to your chin. You settle down for a nap, knowing you’d be woken in a few hours. Shawn said they’d be back by two, so you know they’ll be back by two. Now, if Brian said they’d be back by two, you’d expect them no earlier than two-thirty-five.
The sound of voices, footsteps, and slamming doors wakes you from your slumber. A glance at the bedside clock reads 1:51, so you know Shawn and Tyler are back. You can also count on Brian and Jon also being here for the night, but the others most likely went home. “Shhh, y/n’s sleeping.” You hear Shawn whisper yell from the other side of the door. He’s intoxicated enough to not realize that he’s also being loud.
“I’ll crash on the couch, you guys sleep wherever, you can sleep in my room, but don’t fuck y/n in my bed. Got it?”
“Yeah, man, whatever.” Comes Tyler’s reply. And you close your eyes before the bedroom door opens, pretending to be asleep as Tyler stumbles into bed beside you. In only a few seconds, he’s snoring loudly, and you force yourself back to sleep.
By the time you wake up the next morning, Shawn has already left for the gym, because the couch is empty, and the condo is silent. You’re pretty certain that the others are all still asleep. You’re digging through Shawn’s refrigerator, which admittedly has little besides alcoholic beverages, looking for something you can make breakfast with. Luckily, he has a carton of eggs, and you find bread on the counter. Eggs and toast it is.
You’re just finishing up eating when Shawn walks in the door. He has two cups of coffee in his hands, and he smiles when he sees you. “I knew you’d be awake.”
“Good morning to you too,” You respond. “Want me to make you breakfast?”
He shakes his head, “I already ate, got you coffee, though.” He looks closely at the cups in his hand before extending one to you.
You thank him and gratefully take a sip. A vanilla latte. “How’d you know? And how’d you know I’d be the only one up.”
“I know them.” He says, nodding towards the guest bedroom where there still has not been a single sound from. “And I know you.”
He takes a seat next to you at the counter as you eat the last few bites of your eggs and toast. You start talking, telling him about your last semester of Uni, and it gets really deep really fast, which you’re not surprised about. You start talking about your fears about what comes next after Uni. He listens and shares his fears about the future too. It’s not uncommon for you to talk about things like this with Shawn.
Your coffee is cold by the time Tyler finally emerges from the bedroom. His bedhead is adorable to you. “Morning.” He greets both you and Shawn before coming up behind you and wrapping his arms around you casually, but it feels possessive in a way you weren’t expecting.
Shawn downs the last of his coffee and scoots off the stool beside you. “I’m going to jump in the shower.” He says without giving you or Tyler a second look.
“What’s his problem?” Tyler mutters after Shawn’s out of earshot. The tension between the two was palpable and Shawn’s entire demeanor changed as soon as Tyler walked out.
“Nothing,” you say, feeling defensive on Shawn’s behalf even though you know you shouldn’t. “How was last night?” You change the subject.
“It was fun. Wish you were there, though.”
You and Tyler decide to head back to Pickering since you had told your mom you’d run some errands for her to prepare for the dinner she’s having tonight. You grab all of your stuff and shoot a quick text to Shawn to let him know you’re leaving before following Tyler outside.
Tyler complains about his headache too much at the first grocery store, so you leave him home and run the rest of the errands yourself. When you get back home, Tyler is watching hockey with your dad and brother, and you find your mom in the kitchen. You’re helping her prepare dinner when she mentions Shawn. “I invited Shawn for dinner.” She says, not even looking up from the cutting board.
“You did? When did you talk to him?” You’re confused now.
“Yeah, I called him. I’ve been telling you to invite him over for a while and you haven’t, so I did.” You want to be mad at her for inviting him, but you can’t. You grew up with him, and in your family’s eyes hes a part of your family too. There’s no way for her to know that Tyler and Shawn aren’t getting along the best and a family dinner with both of them wasn’t exactly on your agenda.
Shawn hasn’t admitted openly to disliking Tyler and Tyler hasn’t exactly said anything bad about Shawn, but you’re not oblivious to the tension. You know that neither of them would speak badly of the other knowing how important they are to you. You’re just going to have to get through this dinner.
When Shawn walks in the door, he’s immediately bombarded by your family, but he handles it with ease just like he always does and always has. Dinner doesn’t go as smoothly as you would have wished, but it goes better than you expected. There’s tension, but you’re almost certain you, Shawn, and Tyler are the only ones who can sense it. You sat in between both Shawn and Tyler and tried to pretend like this was normal.
Shawn remains at the center of the conversation for most of the dinner, despite the fact that he inquires curiously about all of your family members and tries to do the opposite of monopolizing the conversation. But a lot has happened in his life and your family wants to catch up on him. You don’t miss the way that Tyler seems put off by how much Shawn is talked about and how highly regarded Shawn is in your family. They didn’t take this much interest in Tyler, and without even talking to him, you know it’s bugging him.
Despite Shawn’s mostly normal behavior, something is still not quite normal with him, and you’re becoming fed up with the fact that he won’t tell you what it is. By the time dinner’s over, you’ve decided you’ll have to confront Shawn about how weird he’s been acting lately.
“What’s going on with you?” You ask Shawn after dragging him into the kitchen once dinners over and everyone else had migrated into the living room. If there’s something he’s keeping from you, you need to know.
“Nothing? You’ve asked me so many times already and the answer hasn’t changed.” He says dismissively, so you’ll have to ask more specific questions. But first, the one that you’ve been wondering about all night.
“Why’d you even come tonight?” You question.
“Your mom invited me. On the phone. I couldn’t say no to her, you know that.” He says. He’s exasperated now too, he didn’t want to be here any more than you wanted him to be here.
“Do you not like Tyler?” You ask him, point blank.
“What? I never said that.” Shawn replies clearly caught off guard by the question.
“But you’ve been acting weird.” You try to explain, “But only when he’s around.”
“I don’t dislike him, y/n.” Shawn says with a sigh.
“Then why are you acting weird and why won’t you tell me?”
“It’s not about Tyler, well not really, he’s fine y/n.” Shawn says, sighing again.
“He’s fine. That’s all you have to say about my boyfriend?” You’re exasperated, and in your opinion, rightfully so.
“I don’t know what you want from me.” He says, his eyes looking everywhere in the room but at you, almost like he’s searching for a way out.
“I want you to be honest.” That’s all you’ve ever wanted from Shawn. That’s all you’ve ever expected out of each other.
There’s a beat of silence. He’s cracking, you can tell. He’s close to telling you what’s going on. You know him well enough to know all you have to do is push a little harder. “Please just tell me. You can tell me anything, you know that.”
“Y/n. I don’t… think I should.”
“I thought we were friends.” You shouldn’t have said it. You know that, but you can’t help but feel hurt by him.
“I’m trying to be your friend right now.” He doesn’t sound offended at all by your little dig against your friendship, which catches you by surprise. Whatever it is, it must be a big deal.
“Shawn, if it’s as important as it seems to be, you should tell me. Is it going to make me mad?” You question.
“I don’t know, it might.”
You’ve never danced around a topic this much with Shawn before, so it’s making you more nervous by the second. “Just tell me.”
“It’s hard for me to see you with Tyler.” He spits out in one breath.
The words hang heavy in the air between the two of you before you realize what he just said and what it all means. He can’t take it back now, and you can’t un-hear it. You feel like an idiot for not realizing it sooner. Everything makes sense now. Part of you regrets forcing Shawn to tell you. Maybe he was right, some things are better left unsaid. There are suddenly so many questions.
“Shawn…” You say his name, the only thing you can think to say in this moment. You don’t have words. There is nothing appropriate for you to say.
He apologizes, which makes you feel guilty because he shouldn’t have to apologize. You’re the one that forced him to say this. You’re the one that made everything change when he was so clearly trying to avoid that possibility. And now, you want to be4 the one to fix things, but you’re not sure how. You’re not sure if it’s even possible.
“But you’re happy with him.” Shawn says, the heartbreak in his voice comes across loud and clear now, and you immediately think back to when he asked you the night before if you were happy. Back then, the question seemed like it came out of the blue and you didn’t understand why he was asking, but it all makes sense now.
It all makes sense and doesn’t make sense at the same time. You only have a few more minutes before everyone starts to wonder where you both are. Your throat feels dry and you swallow hard, “I am.” You force yourself to say, and he nods in response, as though everything is settled, as though it didn’t matter what he just said.
“Okay,” it’s almost a whisper, but then he smiles at you, a smile that doesn’t quite reach his eyes. He turns around, walking back toward the living room without saying anything more. You linger a few more seconds in the kitchen before following. Shawn only stays for about ten more minutes before politely saying goodbye and leaving. You almost follow him outside, almost chase him down, almost finish the conversation, but it occurs to you that there’s nothing else you can say after what’s already been said.
You have so much history with Shawn, as friends, but nothing more. At the end of the day, you’re not willing to walk away from Tyler, from a relationship that has so much promise. So instead, you watched Shawn walk away from you.
