1. A Bai Jintang and Gongsun Ce fic (for SCI: The Mystery Novel). I think I meant to name this something like "Blood, Glass and Bone Ashes"

With introspective GSC pov, where I analyse their horrific relationship start, and what continuing meant for both of them, and where they stand now. Though I HATED them in the first few books, by book 4 they had unexpectedly grown on me and I wanted to do something about that, but to my regret I only wrote like 500 words at the time and postponed it till I've read all of SCI, but by book 5 I kinda started losing interest on the series therefore I keep pushing this Wip to the back shelf. Sorry, fic. Maybe one day I'll get back to you🫠

2. Baby Pangzi fic

Probably will never happen because I wrote a baby Xiaoge fic and included all the best baby shenanigans in it already. Dui bu qi, Pangzi! Ive done you great injustice 😭

3. A Heixie fic that acknowledges Pingxie, Huaxie, Pangxie, Heiping and Heihua all at the same time.

Will probably finish this, it kinda feels all over the place but this is a headcanon so dear to me so I will try my best to brush it up.

4. A One Million Yen Girl (jmovie) au for Zhang Qiling

I've written like 1/8 of this, I really want to write it but I feel like it's beyond my abilities and it stopped being fun. There was this aloof and extremely introvert atmosphere in the Japanese movie but that's what... uh, handwaves....the Jmovie vibes tends to be like sometimes but that's so not the C-story vibe, not even in the most thought provoking, languid and quiet Cmovie/Cdrama, and I thought I could make it work because Zhang Qiling is aloof himself but the more I write the more I feel like this only looks appealing on visual media not when you write it.

OR it's not actually as bad as I think but because I already have this exact image in my head, inability to achieve it makes me more dissapointed. One needs to be careful when they adapt a story from one culture to another that is quite different from the first one, and if you are feeling awkward you better stop. Some things only work in your head and not on paper.

13. What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever come across?

hmm...................the only piece of writing advice i can think of that i would actually go "yeah, that's true" about is the fact that most of the time, you do not need to find alternatives to "said". "said" is not dead, but in fact a vital tool in any writer's repertoire, and oftentimes trying to cut it out for other, more "interesting" options can make a piece come across as clunky.

14. What’s the worst writing advice you’ve ever come across?

95% of all writing advice i've come across ranges from "this is only applicable in certain situations and trying to generalise it is nonsensical" to "that's just downright stupid and will hinder you". my "favourite" piece of writing advice is every piece that tells you to mercilessly cut out 90% of adjectives, adverbs, and other descriptors—most people do not want to aspire to ernest hemmingway's writing style, and many people, both readers and writers, enjoy descriptives because they help paint a mental scene of what's happening. you know—the very thing writing is meant to be doing? i for one love using many, many descriptives, because i find they help to set the emotional tone of the scenes i write, and i've been told by multiple people that my habit of describing things helps them to imagine my stories set in a more realistic, convincing world rather than just characters on a blank background.

15. If you could choose one of your fics to be filmed, which would you choose?

oh this is hard. this is very, very hard. i think......................oh god, i forget the title to this, but years ago (so in like.........2020), i wrote a pacrim fic that was vaguely set in the victorian era, featuring magical elements. it's at an even 20k, and i wrote it all in one sitting, and while i don't think it's the best thing i've ever written, i do think it's the most film adaptable of everything (that i can remember, at least). that said, while it wouldn't work with the film format, i have some very vicarious daydreams of the sunrise verse being adapted to live action.

37. Talk about your current wips.

it would be easier to talk about what aren't my current wips haha. well, let's see........................i'm not actively writing anything, but basically anything i've got more than a few sentences in concept of counts as a wip to me. in order from most important for me to get started on to "less important but i'd like to make a crack on them before 2024":

immortal ba ye au - what if instead of zhang rishan taking over as head of the jiumen association, it was an immortal ba ye, who has lost just about everyone he loves in his life (fo ye, qi yu, zhang rishan), and had to make himself in an entirely new man to survive the modern world and the position he's in? what if after the wang compound battle, he found out that zhang rishan hadn't died as he had thought, but actually been kept in a cursed sleep after being experimented on by the wang? what if—well, you know the rest. this is my big writing project i really need to plot out properly so i can work on it.

multiple sunrise verse fics. i'm putting these all together because they're too interconnected by being in the same verse to separate them. i want to write a heihua fic in this setting, plus the fuba fic, plus a much larger sunrise verse!version of the events of sha hai, and then a fic about xiaoge post changbaishan rift/when he returns from beyond the bronze gate. unfortunately i cannot write the heihua fic until i get through more of canon, but the others are all more doable. (i went and plotted out the sunrise verse timeline specifically so i could make all these fics work—even the fuba one, which required me to make the both of them significantly younger than in (show) canon (though funnily enough, fo ye got retcon'd to around his novelverse age rather than show canon age).)

the weird fucking vampire au that has far too strong of a hold over me for something that i am 90% sure will have to be tagged as "blood kink" if (when) it ever gets written. tl;dr: ba ye gets poisoned, they try and heal him with qilin blood, it............does not work and instead he winds up craving it (it being zhang rishan's blood). once he gets cured it doesn't go away. the inherent homoeroticism of blood drinking, having someone's teeth sunk into your neck knowing they could kill you but won't, you know how it goes.

lesbian luo fei/qin xiaoman fic. i have got to finish detective l before i can write this but the mental images for this in my head are very strong. country dyke xiaoman-jie representation. alas, this means i have to relegate luo fei/ben jieming to a platonic relationship, but i'll write them as canon gay people some day to even out the scales.

the iron triangle visiting baima's grave. that's it, that's the fic. (that's a lie—the concept has so many fucking feels attached for both personal and narrative reasons. taking the people you love to meet the person you lost. the acknowledgement of that loss and the love that still continues in you. you know how it goes.)

Fic Writer Interview

I was tagged by @s1utspeare ! I am surprised that people still remember that i write fics since i basically stopped in the later half of the year except for NaNoWriMo lmaoo. so i will do this. 

name/nicknames: Angie or ang 

fandoms: Aight so DMBJ. I write the most of that. And Winter Begonia, but WB is usually just smut. I did write for Squid Game for a bit but stopped since the fandom was too much. 

two shots?: if this like 2 chapter fics?? i dont normally write that, and i have been bad at reading other peoples fics for reasons i wont disclose here. 

most popular multi-chapter fic: its a squid game fic, please dont come for me. People knew this fic before they even know me so that says something. Puzzle Pieces. I will not be able to write anything close to the amount of hits this got. 

actual worst part of writing: um writing. i am not a writer never have been, but i wanted to write because there were some things that i wanted to draw but i could not do it with my current talent. so instead i wrote it. i never expected for people to like what i wrote. so it takes a lot for me to share my work because im so scared of it not getting hits (aka why i stopped writing recently)

how you choose your titles: i stare at the blank “title” box on ao3 and cry for like 5 mins and then write something random. sometimes it loops back to the story, or its stupid and makes no sense. 

do you outline?: no. i literally write like a stream of consciousness. no thoughts. i only outlined for my nanowrimo fic since it was a daunting 50k that needed to open and close within those words. if its a multi fic with no clear ending i dont care. if its a one shot it means i already have an ending so i keep it 10k. 

ideas you probably won’t get around to, but wouldn’t it be nice?: no not that i know of. i had for a while wanted to do a idol AU for heihua but i suck at AUs so thats not happening. (it would be idol/bodyguard or even opera singer/bodyguard). 

i want to finish my current heihua fic but i dried up with ideas so it has been sitting unfinished for quite some time. I am not goof with very technically elements of stories (tombs) so i made a mistake by doing that two times in one story. 

callouts @ me: get over the fear of writing and comparing myself to everyone else. im a horrible friend and i dont read fics my friends write because i compare myself to their fics. i know im not a good writer so when i see my friends write masterpieces and get more hits i kind of wonder why do i even try. 

probably also saying im not a good writer, but i know im not lol even if people try and convince me. so i guess i got a lot to work on for now im just not gonna update until i feel comfortable with my product.

best writing traits: ...i just roasted myself for like 300 words so idk if i have good writing traits. oh only smut. i think im good at writing smut, which is weird since i dont do anything in my own life. its been a while since i have written actually but i think my porn without plots normally are good since i focus less on the plot. 

i also do a lot of heihua slow burn.  aka enemies to lovers.

tagged by my beloved brigid @s1utspeare ♥ thank you so much! i haven’t talked about my wips in ages tbh bc i haven’t been writing that much ever since my heihua saw the light of day?? i guess am focusing more on images currently. my brain just cannot do words between uni and work sigh 

but here’s a list of the things i’ve been kind of working on (or hope to get back into and finish at some point when the stars align just right) so feel free to ask about anything if it interests you:

I. bad buddy drabbles. currently working on a snippet that focuses on wai and pran finding each other in high school after pran’s transfer. am not sure how long it will become or where exactly it’s going but i have a lot of thoughts about them and how they fit between all the things they don’t talk about. also wai is kind of amusing to write? i can go a bit bonkers with him 

II. set on the same file is my random snippet about the bad buddy x the gifted au (a mutant au?) i have stuck in my brain. this, too, is about wai in some ways. more so about pat and wai and what their conflict could be in this universe. am not sure if i will ever write more for this au or share any parts of it really but i wanted some thoughts out of my brain so here we are (also thank you a lot to mimi @dimpledpran for allowing me to share all these plot bunnies in our dms ♥)

III. zhou youdu returns. i still wish to finish this one day. novoland remains a fond memory in my brain and i just loved zhou youdu So Much ;; he deserved better than just having to retreat into some cold winter city alone to lick his wounds smh especially when william’s character in this drama was Like That

IV. li qian falls in love. my take on what rebirth for you could’ve been if they weren’t cowards and gave us the ot3 relationship we and them deserve. they could’ve been so good and Yet (am still pissed about the ending of this drama, it was just So Bad. glad zsx soon returns to me in heroes, am so excited ;;)

V. bloodplay. my feral xiaoge au, happening during the events of the ending of tlt2 (kind of forces me to rewrite the ending and the whole bronze door situation? rip). i’ve talked about this a lot so ppl probably already know what this is about. i still try to find the courage to write anything sexy for this hhhh

VI. dreamwalker au. exploring the universe i used in In Orbit with li cu and xiaoge, this time with liu sang as i originally planned. i have so many ideas for this but this feels like a huge monster am too scared to touch. also gosh liu sang remains a character i just Cannot Write in a way that would satisfy me

and that’s basically it. i don’t currently have any insistent drive for anything i have lying around or could be starting but am casually working on something all the time. i hope i can get at least these bad buddy thoughts into something sometime soon. then maybe later this year something else will consume me and force me to write again. 

(i would love it tho if anyone liked to discuss any writing or plots with me ♥ it’s been a while since i’ve been involved in any of that. i miss it, horribly.)

From the no excuse prompts-- the end, and/or before the beginning? Whichever piece you want to share.

I'll do both for both because I can!

BEFORE THE BEGINNING — three sentences (or more) about something that happened before the plot of my current project

For my heihua one the before the beginning is easy, as it's a sequel to this man is pathetic, which is very hot. They made it to the tomb now, have split from the rest of the group and are making their way through many many tricky rooms.

For the pangxie one, let me just tell you what made this stupid au happen. So in the lost tomb 2, Pangxie do a little bike race and they say that the loser has to post a video. Wu Xie wins the race (which is um shady, as wu xie according to the novel has terrible balance and can barely ride a bike, which makes me believe Pangzi let him win... anyway-) and then he instantly goes live to tell people Pangzi has to upload a video. Then later on Pangzi is bored and opens weibo, on this weibo you can see a certain video of Wu Xie, very sweaty, sitting up in his bed (>check Hils' post for visuals<). Ever since then I've been thinking about Pangxie with an Onlyfans or as camboys or whatever and this au happened...

THE END — i’ll make up an ending, or post the ending if i’ve written it

The pangxie smut is really just gonna be pwp, so no real spectacular ending. Either Wu Xie just being absolutely out of it, or just a reference to them getting a similar request again like a week later and Wu Xie has completely forgotten once again that taking control isn't for him.

The ending for the heihua one is literally the only thing that's finished already... So here we go!

“That sex room was crazy, right?” Hei Xiazi laughed, slapping Pangzi on the shoulder, “I’ve joked about chambers like that plenty of times before, but I never expected to encounter one in an actual tomb.”

“Wait, you two actually had sex and the door opened?” Wu Xie asked, pointing his flashlight towards Hei Xiazi’s face.

Hei Xiazi frowned, “Of course? ‘Two lovers unite’, it was clearly what they wanted us to do! How did you three get out of there, then?” There couldn’t have been another way, right? If there was, Xie Yuchen would’ve certainly found it. He did agree to having sex with Hei Xiazi to open the door quite fast, but that must’ve been because it was the only way.

“Well,” Wu Xie said with his arms crossed, “Xiaoge wouldn’t let us try, apparently we just had to hold hands and put our other hand on the door.” He was clearly not happy with the situation, and Hei Xiazi had to agree, that was quite boring. At least he got a good fuck out of this whole situation.

Xie Yuchen wasn’t so happy with that revelation, though. He yelled from across the room, “Are you saying I fucked Xiazi for nothing?”

Earlier that day:

“The murals on these walls all seem to depict a pair of lovers,” Wu Xie noted. He shone his flashlight over an image of a couple kissing passionately, then to another couple in a tight embrace.

While Pangzi and Wu Xie roamed the chamber and scanned the murals, Xiaoge was still inspecting the door that had just closed behind them. He wanted to make sure they had a quick way out, just in case.

“Lovers on the walls, this weird table in the middle of this room on a platform…” Pangzi thought out loud as he walked around the room. He jumped off the platform and walked to the other gate in the room. “Tianzhen, come here there’s an inscription on the door, what does it say?”

Wu Xie quickly walked over. It took him a while to read the inscription as it was quite faded and there was dirt all over it. But after some scrubbing and prodding the lines with his pocket knife, he finally read it out loud: “To open this gate, two lovers must unite.”

“Do you think it has something to do with these handprints on the door?” Pangzi asked and then looked at Wu Xie as if he just had the greatest revelation of his life. Wu Xie’s eyes went big as he soon understood it too. They had been waiting for this day to come.

“You still have the lube, right?” Wu Xie asked. He was already eagerly pushing down his pants.

“No need,” Xiaoge said as he ran over hastily from where he had been checking the other door. He pulled Wu Xie’s hands from his belt and put one of his hands on the door, holding the other. Then, he reached for Pangzi’s hands. He forced the two of them to hold hands and then he pushed Pangzi’s free hand against the door. With a heavy click, the door opened.

“Oh,” Pangzi and Wu Xie said in unison, they sounded slightly disappointed. Xiaoge just shook his head with a relieved sigh and stepped into the next room.

Wu Xie grabbed Pangzi’s arm to stop him from following Xiaoge and offered, “We can still do it while Xiaoge scouts the next room?”

There are many benefits to being a marine biologist- we were talking about songxiao in the server today so I thought I’d add this. Song Lan is a marine biologist who forms a close bond with the merman that he is studying

LI CU LI CU LI CU LI CU MY BABY BOY 

you know every day i ask myself: “li cu can’t be your favourite character, right? like you’d die for iron triangle and you’d kill for xiao bai and you’d give your body and soul to free princess mute, like- it can’t be li cu, right?” and then i look myself in the mirror and go: “stop lying to yourself”

WOW THIS GOT LONG SO THE REST IS UNDER THE CUT

How I feel about this character:

Might possibly be my fav dmbj dumbass. who knows. certainly not me. i just- LOVE HIM?? SO MUCH???? He sucker-punched me from the very beginning with his TEARS and his DESPERATION and his ACCUSATIONS OF KIDNAPPING. and ok he’s also a Dumb Teenage Boy and ok maybe he tries Too Hard to be a Normal Dumb Teenage Boy, like he’s going through the motions and maybe I relate a little ok idk.

And I just- adore that so much of Sha Hai is through his perspective?? Because it is very much Li Cu’s story. He’s an outsider here diving into a world we already know so well and Wu Xie is the catalyst. And really- it’s about seeing a character whom we all adore (Wu Xie) who is Hurting and Desperate and Raw (bc Xiao Ge), and he’s doing his best to fulfill a HUGE storyline but maybe he catches Feelings along the way. Maybe he adopts a son who is also Hurting but for very different reasons. And maybe it’s about seeing these two people who are lost and alone find each other in this chaos, see the good in each other, and help them find the good in themselves.

I already screamed about Li Cu’s character at you last night because I just- have So Many Feelings about him. But I think the core of Li Cu’s character really resonates with me?

It’s all about him finding a reason to live and a reason to love himself and a reason to care about himself. And it’s all about him letting others love and care about him, too.

Li Cu’s been told his whole life that he isn’t worth the air he breathes and he isn’t worth the trouble he causes. He isn’t worthy of love or sacrifice or kindness. And so much about Sha Hai is Li Cu realizing that he is. 

As you pointed out so beautifully, Sierra, Wu Xie is in such an awful place, and yet he still helps Li Cu realize his worth. And, re our conversations about how Li Cu views Pingxie, Wu Xie helps Li Cu realize that that love that can a beautiful, kind thing. Painful sometimes, and so fucking hard. But it’s worth it, if you want it.

And honestly, I think a lot of the Tiger Trio is about this, too: finding a reason to live, getting out of the motions of pretending to be a Normal Teenage Boy, finding a reason to love yourself and realizing it’s okay to let others love and care and fight for you, too. 

They’re already friends, but Sha Hai truly brings them together. Makes them realize they are worth it and there is someone who cares about them and will fight for them and will follow them to the fucking ends of the earth. 

It’s about finding FAMILY and I fucking LOVE THAT for them!!!!

You know, I wrote a little about family and love, and promptly tripped into shipping Jia Kezi/Li Cu so hard I straight up blacked out.

I also am interested in Jia Kezi/Li Cu/Li Jiale 👀👀👀 but have not explored this yet.

I have Feelings about Li Cu/Shen Qiong/Wang Can bc of @traineecryptid’s  AMAZING fic 老牛吃嫩草| old cow eats young grass which I think about Often. I honestly don’t really ship straight up Li Cu/Shen Qiong, but adding Wang Can’s Chaotic Murder Element Does Things to me.

I want to ship Li Cu/Su Wan/Hao Ge but anything past Kissing and Holding Hands makes me cover my face in Embarrassed Despair bc they are my BABIES my SONS i cANT

and you already know about that One Very Specific time travel au where it’s li cu/wu xie/xiao ge i have a LOT of FEELINGS about THAT but only for that Very Specific Circumstance

I actually headcanon Li Cu as demi/bi, leaning more towards ace, bc it just?? Fits so well, in my opinion?? I don’t really wanna imagine him having Sexy Times with anyone, just Sweaty, Embarrassed, Panicky Feelings (except for that Very Specific Time Travel au but we’ve talked about this). Maybe this will change. But for now he is simply My Son and I wish him happiness in whatever form he so chooses.

My non-romantic OTP for this character:

I WOULD DIE FOR THE TIGER TRIO!!! FOR ALL THE REASONS STATED ABOVE!! THEY’RE DUMB TEENAGE BOYS LEARNING TO LOVE THEMSELVES AND EACH OTHER.

I also unrepentantly would die for Shen Qiong&Wang Xiaoyuan&Li Cu&Su Wan&Hao Ge&Wang Can BROT6. I- wow. okay. Might actually write a fic about this. They are the Next Generation, learning from the Iron Triangle/HeiHua/Su Nan and they are learning from past mistakes and SURPASSING THEM and everyone is SO PROUD LOOK AT THEM GO!!!!!!!! And okay maybe let’s add some Xiao Bai in there, too, hm?

And- well. not BROTP, but it is our Classic FATHER&SON DUO LI CU & WU XIE. They are my favourite thing about Sha Hai. Full stop. They make me Feel Things and Cry. They’re what really got me into Sha Hai and the greater dmbj universe. :)

UHHHHH I have no idea I’ve never thought about this before UUHH ARE there unpopular opinions???

OH maybe unpopular opinion is that Li Cu is demi/bi instead of Straight Up Sweaty Gay. he’s just Sweaty bc oH NO HE’S NEVER FELT LIKE THIS BEFORE??? HE L P???

OH also maybe unpopular opinion is that he and the original Shen Qiong actually were good friends and maybe each other’s only friend until Su Wan came along.

And okay maybe this is another unpopular opinion: Li Cu did actually start falling for Shen Qiong but he’s a Confused demi who has a difficult time telling the difference between friendship and romance and also it was a Really Shitty Situation. and he’ll forever wonder if they could have been Something or just Really Good Friends and he’ll never know 🙃

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

Caw! series because on 16 and 15 I started all poetic and metaphorical and then in 14 there is Kugi bitching he wants new furniture. Truly poetic cinema. 

I also like the opening line of 20 because of the Ikebukuro Message Boards feeling.

have to say that after i finished my liu sang oneshot i haven’t been writing that much. uni has hit me like a truck and i’ve been super busy and too tired to even think about words. but i have hazy images and a strong will. maybe this time period is just me working on stuff in my head and figuring everything out, who knows. 

but here’s a couple of wips i have in my folders:

forgotten, recalled (working title) - my pingxie reincarnation au that happens during the events of ultimate note but has slowly been growing beyond that too. includes two past lives on top of their current one. 

bloodplay (working title) - the beast au where i try to make sense of whatever it was that was going on with xiaoge during the end of tlt2. includes a lot of blood and eating of raw meat and hunting images and maybe just. sex stuff (help me)

my liu sang fic that i have not touched in ages but feel like i still want to write. or at least snippets of liu sang and bai haotian plus liu sang in the middle of pingxie and then with pangzi 

journey for us (working title) - thoughts about the main trio in jatn and how they may or may not be in love with each other (pls don’t ask any snippets of this bc i have basically nothing to give)

in the shadow of the mountain - my thoughts on the love triangle in the long ballad. i loved haoyan to bits and then ended up falling for wei shuyu instead. they could work as a trio and i have many thoughts on that especially from wei shuyu’s pov (also if it’s not obvious, hao du is the mountain) 

my heihua fic that happens in the same universe as binding but before those events (aka hei xiazi’s thoughts on death, immortality, love, and children)

i will not name these as wips but i have a couple of thoughts on a pingxie vampire au plus i always think about my and @ashenlights‘s dmbj cultivator au very fondly and am up to sharing anything about that 

none of these wips are that much words quite yet as they are simple images and vibes in my head. am trying to focus on the reincarnation au and sorting out all the details but it’s going very slowly. i am up for any thoughts however ^^

god, every year there are so many fics i want to write but never get into. the pile of regrets just keeps on growing! it's so sad. but i guess from this year my biggest regrets might be:

not getting into my jatn ot3 fic (but i think i am slowly moving towards it bc i am desperate to write all these ot3s i've gained this year)

not writing my heihua which would accompany Binding (tho i've gathered some more thoughts and i think that's something)

not actually writing my pingxie reincarnation au even if i thought it would happen! it just proved itself more difficult than i thought bc i have such big expectations for it... but am not giving it up ^^ hopefully, it will work out after marinating in my brain for a while more heh

3. favorite line/scene you wrote this year

oh boy hmm. am quite proud of everything i've written this year (and yall cannot even see all of it bc there's a lot of stuff i haven't posted bc it's not ready) but let's see.

(spoiler alert for the ending of Binding if you haven't read that!)

my favorite scene from this year must be pangzi's death in Binding. i actually make myself cry with that and it somehow feels so. it feels so good? in a sense. it's just what i imagined it to be once i decided that Binding would end that way.

my favorite line is from In Orbit where li cu comes to think about the supernatural world wu xie has hidden from him so desperately: "Wu Xie had tried his best to keep it from him but it’s hard to hide a whole world behind your back when you’re already painted from head to toe with it." that sentence just works in the purpose i've given to it. (and tbh In Orbit as a whole is one of my fave things i've ever written.)
